Hey, it’s a relief to find The Ledge back up and working this morning.
Yesterday gave me a heart attack…..trying to click on the site only to be met with the message ‘Account Suspended’.

For a while I was wracking my brains trying to work out what I’d done wrong. I was pretty tipsy on Friday night but not too bad. I didn’t remember going on The Ledge. ‘Maybe I did though’ I thought to myself. Maybe I typed something offensive. Then I noticed the same had happened to others. Somebody even started a chat on Reddit.

Anyway, all good now. But does anyone know what happened. The site is often down and can’t be accessed, particularly at weekends. But this is the first time ‘account suspended’ message has ever popped up. An update would be appreciated.

Me too. I thoght WHAT? I couldn't remember what would I have said wrong. Sometimes I am sarcastic but not a hater, but it is also true that when reading something you can give it the wrong tone, different from the one who wrote it.

Anyway then I tried to enter after cleaning cookies (login erased), a different wifi, data network, different browser, and the same result. So I figured out it was a site fall. Probably it was the server account what was suspended, I don't know.

I'm curious if the servers were overwhelmed from the influx of visitors to the website. On the main page of The Ledge, it says that July 18, 10:15 p.m. had the most visitors active online. The servers went down soon after, perhaps no more than 12 hours after that.

. . . yeah, I was kind of shocked as well, simply because of the wording "account suspended" - in fact, it sounded to me not like been taken down temporarily but more like out of business for good. I'm glad all is back to normal, but I would appreciate very much if admin folks would comment on what actually happened.

From the later messages it was giving, I'd say it was a security certificate issue.

It is very possible. Maybe it reached a limit and then it was automatically suspended.

Cause usually on weekends this site looks like a ghost town including the dust and the rolling balls, but today it is very very active.

I've always found funny that on weekdays The Ledge is more active than on weekends, where people should be busy at work.

Yeah, that’s pretty much what I thought…. Thats it!!!! It’s shutdown for good. I don’t do any social media of any description (TL is as close as it gets), so I’m not party to any of those Facebook discussion groups. So I thought, thats it. No more FM chat. Bit sad….but I don’t think this site is long for this world, sadly.

Maybe need to find something else….The Killers chat forum maybe….that could have a few years of life.

can someone post a link to that reddit thread?

I went on there when this site was down, but there are so many FM and FM-related threads it would be hard to know which one folks from here are going to if we would even end up all going to the same one.

I did see some comments scattered across different threads there with people asking about the status of The Ledge. Maybe we designate one...

Still frustrating the owner of this site doesn’t engage. I mean, you don’t have to be a fan. Fair enough, I get it…. it could just be a little side business. No interest in this band whatsoever. But still, periodically just post a little update. Say something. Anything.

Lis,

I am the person who bought it. I had it for 10 years. I sold it in 2017 because I needed the money. I sold it for $2000, 1/3 of what I bought it for, but I also relieved myself of the $3000 in annual web hosting fees. I was going through a hard time and I needed to do that.

At this time, I have control of the Ledge bulletin management. However, I have no control of the server. No access to that.

Also, I should say I did not sell it to the first person who came along. I waited and tried to find a fan. At that time wetcamelfood was still alive and he had put so much work in the discography. I had also added a decade of news to the second hand news and blue letter archive sections. I wanted that all preserved, but months passed and there were no buyers. So, I auctioned it.

Hi Homer,

I guess with just The Ledge and not all the other information that had been gathered on the site, the monthly cost would have been a lot less and digital, cloud forums are so much easier these days. But migrating a forum this old to a modern one would itself be hard.

But, as you said, I feel that this can't last and one day we will check in and it will be gone. I have been away, but when I saw the Instagram messages, I had to run back here.

I don't know much about what transferring it would entail, but I can't imagine it would be easy, especially given how old this format is.

I wonder IF there is a free platform that we could all join, and just sort of have it as a backup, in case this ever does completely end. Just a thought...

I mean, back in the day(2007), there were several new message boards that sprang from here, after a huge moderator implosion here. But I doubt if any of those are still around. Again, just a thought, but we'd all know that that's where we meet, after the apocalypse.

oh wow i feel stupid lol i had no idea it was you. i had been off the site for many years after the divorce and missed a lot of what happened here and who was running things etc. and i certainly understand $ issues as being a reason to have to sell. But let me say how much marty and I appreciate you keeping it going for as long as you did! i know it can be quite costly and time consuming. and yes i remember wetcamelfood and all his hard work also... many people have contributed so much to the site, and i get worried when i think about it just vanishing someday. :(

Thank you so much for everything!

so i was texting marty about this and this was his idea--

"If a data backup was possible, it could likely get imported into a new version of the bulletin board system. Could be quite a bit of work though as it’s so old. I’m not volunteering!!!There was some modification of code but very little. The layout used the standard V bulletin customization features. The discography script was extremely modified. Saving the Q&A’s would be trivial…just save each page."

i don't understand any of that lol but i figured i'd put it here in case any industrious young folk have the time or equipment or inclination to back any of this up...

Message boards are slowly dying all over the place. I am on 2 other message boards and they have been arounds since the late 90s. The traffic there is way slower than it used to be even 5 years ago.
Message boards were created at the dawn of the internet. It was exciting. But now people use Facebook and other means for social content. I suppose we are all dinosaurs here. But I insist I am the youngest one :)

Probably, but it's me that Rod sings to... :)

May the good Lord be with you down every road you roam
And may sunshine and happiness surround you when you're far from home
And may you grow to be proud, dignified and true
And do unto others as you'd have done to you
Be courageous and be brave
And in my heart you'll always stay
Forever young (forever young)...

I remember the bulletin board systems that existed first. I used to post on one for The X-Files. I think there was one for Fleetwood Mac that some of the people here were on , before The Ledge. Communicating with other fans was very exciting.

The first board I participated on was on Prodigy. Prodigy was my first introduction to the internet.

I remember when there used to be chat rooms on this board.

I remember the bulletin board systems too. The first fan site I visited was the NicksFix. That place became very popular during 1997 and The Dance. Fans could post reviews and there was so much data and information on the site.

Anyone remember Emerald Eyes, the Christine tribute site? What was the site that made a fuss over Christine's green cup next to her on the Dance tour. Was it called the Green Cup?

I remember when the NicksFix got chat around 2001. They had to ban the word Stevie because people were thinking it was really Stevie in the chat. Once I had this conversation that was just really odd. I finally asked, how old are you and the person responded 10. I hung up and never went back to the chat there. Even though our conversation was just fanned based, adults and children should not be chatting together. I kept thinking this person is an idiot. At 10 they dont know much about stuff.

I lurked here forever before joining. Michelle I remember you giving me that third degree before signing up. You told me you were getting lots of spam and wanted to know if I was real. I think you gave me some sort of quiz before you approved my membership

I remember the Nicksfix too, it changed the url to rockalittle.com years ago. It still out there.

I remember the "Ask Stevie" section, where you can fill a form with a question for her. Many anwsers were very very laconic, it was obvious she didn't enjoy it. But few answers were interesting. Somebody asked about recording SYW without Christine. She said "It was not as much fun. It was strange and unfamiliar working without Christine. We missed her."

Yes I believe that was it. Good memory!!!! It was a tribute site to Chris. But back in those days it was fairly basic. It was called that because you clicked to enter and there was a picture of Chris on the Dance tour with a fluorescent green cup behind her on keyboards. I can't recall if there was anything for fans to do on the site. It was more of a tribute site if my memory is correct.

No, not directly. Ads are generated from latest search I do when I'm looking for something to buy. When the ad appears here, I've already purchased. Or they are ads from websites that I never use to buy. For example if I look for a flight ticket, I usually buy directly from the airline website. But later it appears here ads (for the same destination) from travel agencies.

I was going to ask if any ledgie followed the "Make the Ads Go Away! Click here.", I supposed it was kind of a $ subscription, but the link answers "Invalid FAQ Item specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the administrator".

So the ads must be the only revenue source.

I'm Chrome W10 as well. I'm just happy to be able to type on a real keyboard! I'll use longer expletives now!

It does sadly feel that the Ledge is on its way out. I shall miss it if it finally does go to the great Way Back Machine in the sky; at least it outlived the band itself (twice if you count the 1996 interregnum). I think I can recall that it was one of the first sites I went to when the internet really became much of a thing in the 90s. I can recall a fairly desultory and unenthusiastic discussion about the new Fleetwood Mac album that apparently dares not speak its name in 1995 and trying to work out all the abbreviations that the more die-hard members used. I felt rather in awe of Ledge royalty like ChiliD and Wetcamelfood and I didn't join for many years (I only had a hotmail account, and that wasn't allowed at the time). I'm happy to have been a bit peripheral, not really getting involved in the big fights, more interested in exploring perhaps more obscure facets of the band. We're all getting a bit older, too.

Well crap, I jinxed it. Computer is back to refusing to access the Ledge. Phone only.
I'll keep my mouth shut next time(yeah, right).

argh i'm gonna cry...:( you guys have no idea how thrilling it was for me back in the early days, to find other people who loved this band...who had been to shows and had all the albums and who *knew* stuff , all kinds of cool facts, about these people and their music. it was an amazing surprise. i'll miss it all if this vanishes one day...

Thank you, Lis, and for all your and Marty's work back in the day particularly in building the site up and making it into an invaluable resource. It was a guilty, but nourishing pleasure when the Mac was going though one of its periodic uncool and underappreciated periods. I see the ubiquity of the Silver Springs memes these days and I chuckle at how that all came to be.

I agree. Thank you Lis, for creating what really should've been the official FM site(because it's that good). Your work is much appreciated.

Thank you so much. it all feels kind of like a thousand years ago that we started this site but in certain moments it feels like last week. very glad it's all still here...and still a great resource. thanks to all who make that happen.

Obviously, the internet is nothing like it was 25-30 years ago, but the Ledge was THE PLACE for all the FM information, as it still is.
And let's face the truth... it would have failed 20 years ago, if Mick was in charge of it. No truer words have ever been written.

I couldn’t have said it better. Thank you Lis.

It will be sad to lose the last vestiges of the “old web” that connected us.
A weird and quirky bunch us - but we truly were the diehard fans from beginning to end.

Computer is back to refusing to access the Ledge. Phone only.

I suppose your laptop date settings are fine, just in case check it. I don't think it has to do with the cache and cookies but I clean them periodically, it's a safety habit. I'm not an expert but it could be with extensions installed in the Chrome, or the antivirus, as some extensions can interfere with SSL connections, but it's weird it worked for a couple of days and then it refused again.
Finally, the last attempt could be that you swear to behave well from now on, that might work. :)

I usually look for memes with the name of a band, but yes with song names there are several funny or interesting things too.

Gosh, reading a thread on Reddit about this board saddens me.I won't post the link because it's particularly vitriolic about one of us. Whilst there may germs of truth in how some board-related may be perceived externally, I do feel that there has been ample space here for intelligent discourse so the wider picture gets missed. Not being able to get new ledgies has obviously been a bit of an impediment.
[
It is a shame that if any of the surviving members were to decide to idle an afternoon away by reading the comments they would do it through their fingers. Yes, John and Lindsey may get an easier ride, but I've never walked in any of their shoes. It was always lovely when Bob Welch turned up, and Jeremy too, until that Wendy-related incident (or am I mis-remembering here).

It's been stuff like untangling the so-called fake Mac episode, finding the identity of Mrs Scarrott, talking
about Danny, finally establishing what Christine did on Then Play on and suchlike that I've enjoyed, and putting those brief crazy twelve years from the Dog and Dustbins to Tusk in some sort of context. What a story, what a band

yeah i see they are often pretty vitriolic about this site on reddit... and that makes me a little sad, but whatever. i sometimes tell people to ignore stuff that irritates them and move on, but i guess some folks get pissy and would rather avoid the ledge completely. i still find it worthwhile to focus on stuff that interests me and ignore (usually! haha) stuff that ticks me off, either here or on any site.

what a story, what a band, indeed.

It seems to me that it is during the weekends that The Ledge falls most frequently. In theory, this should be the case cause there may be more activity, but my perception has always been that I see more posts on weekdays (when the ledgies should be working!). But the servers probably host other webpages with different users behavior.

Cause I've seen this error today and on past sundays, but then later it responded well. Probably there are less support people on weekends and take longer to take action.

It's been crashing A LOT lately, but fortunately, the crashes are short lived.

I'm just thankful that it's still working at all.

I really wish someone would start up one of the free message boards(that used to exist? I ASSume they still do...), and we'd all join it. It could be our backup, for if this ever dies and doesn't come back. We could name it The Ledge II.

Just minutes ago I couldn't enter, this time it says This website cannot be accessed. The database error appears frequently too.

I don't know if it's an unforeseen technical error or if there are no longer resources to maintain this site. If the owners/administrators decide to close this website definitely, I would appreciate if they could let us know in advance, to see if it is possible to agree on where to migrate.

I too saw the Reddit board about a year ago. Pretty frightening. The lack of new blood hurts all organizations. But there was a good chunk of daily posters that left when Stevie fired Lindsey and she was getting blowback about it here. In some weird way this board is a reality show since no one can join anymore. Who will be the last one standing
I get a kick out of when they say the board is "Pro Lindsey". Much of this board hates much of this band's legacy when they have tried to go on without Chris or without Lindsey. But even when Lindsey dominated an album (SYW) and used Tusk like qualities on it, it does not bring him any love on this board. I think they were referring to much of the board taking Lindsey's side in his firing.
All boards have diverse opinions and this board is no different. That's great. But this board has something that I never experienced before on other boards: Jealousy. When I first joined there was a poster that got jealous I was chatting with another member. I was told that I was not around long enough to share my thoughts with this person. I won't say who that was but they are still around and I can sometimes see the jealousy continue. It blows my mind that someone can get jealous of someone on a message board. Total insecurity. But I've got the nasty messages to show it :)

the last few times I've gotten that message (like right now)when I hit 'refresh' it comes up fine. Of course, I have to click the website and have it say that it's unavailable and hit refresh and then i get the main page, then I click a forum name and get the message it's not available so I hit refresh and there is the forum and then I want to see a particular thread in that forum and click on it and get the message that it is unavailable and then hit the refresh button and there it is. Fun times!
