Stevie Nicks joining Billy Joel for NYC stadium concert
by Staff
January 6, 2025
Stevie Nicks and her band play Bonnaroo music festival. Manchester^ Tennessee USA - 06-19-2022
Stevie Nicks will join Billy Joel for a ‘one-night-only stadium show at MetLife Stadium in Rutherford, New Jersey on Aug. 8, 2025. Joel and Nicks have previously co-headlined shows together, beginning March 2023.
Joel shared with The Los Angeles Times in an interview last year: “I just got to meet her backstage, but we’ve never worked together, even though we both kind of hit at the same time. So this’ll be a completely new thing for me.” Nicks and Joel are also scheduled to perform one other joint date – March 29 at Detroit’s Ford Field.
Joel has additional concerts scheduled this year, with solo dates and co-headlining shows with Rod Stewart and Sting. Sting and Joel will co-headline four shows in 2025: Indianapolis, IN, at Lucas Oil Stadium on February 8th, followed by Syracuse’s JMA Wireless Dome on April 11th, Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium on May 10th, and Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City on May 23rd. Joel and Stewart will perform on July 5 at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh.

I've never heard of that news outlet before!
It's interesting because the Elton and Billy shows were truly co-headling. They started together then Elton would play with his band, then Billy with his, and the encore would be Billy, Elton, and their bands. But this would take months of rehearsal for Stevie and Billy.

Can you imagine her mixing it up like that. I don't think she could do it, mentally.

She never really could “mix it up” with her solo shows. With the exception of a couple songs when releasing a new album.it’s always the same set list. I actually asked her about it when I met her backstage after a 1994 concert… she said “It just works”

When she promoted the 24 Karat Gold Tour in 2016, she said to come to two shows because you may see two different shows - as in different setlist for each show.

She’s perfectly paired with Billy. He hasn’t recorded a new album since 1994 and has largely been doing the same set for the past 30 years.
I love Billy. I’ve seen him several times since he started touring regularly in 2007. I hit my max around 2014 which was the last time I saw him before he moved into playing ballparks. Literally the worst venue you can play for music.

And she is helping out with a benefit for LA fire victims at the end of January, it was just announced.
I guess she’ll probably tour heavily this year, unless there’s some unfulfilled desire in her to record more.
Come on, Stevie, do that RHIANNON thingy for Netflix. More people watch Netflix than buy your albums, so it’s a win-win.

She got me my first pro keyboard. She had an endorsement, and she got them at cost(half price). And she got a bunch of us backstage passes to Billy, in the early 90s.
She battled cancer a couple of years ago, and beat it, as far as I know. But yeah, she's a force of nature!

She's great. I think she was a Professor at IU as well because Billy would call her Professor.
She was in Springsteen 92-93 solo band and Bruce basically told her she needed to go out front like she had greater heights to reach than being in his band.
What's great about Billy is that he hands over the show to Crystal like Al says. Crystal's platform is center as well and she really pumps up the crowd. She is the show. Billy is very good but I don't think he could entertain a crowd solo for 2 hours like Elton did with his solo piano shows- so point is thank God for Crystal Taliefero.

Billy Joel Cancels All Concerts Due to Brain Disorder
The musician was recently diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) and is “undergoing specific physical therapy,” according to a statement
Earlier this year, Billy Joel postponed numerous concerts due to a then-unspecified medical condition. The musician and his team have now canceled those shows and revealed that Joel was recently diagnosed with a brain disorder called normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). “This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance,” Joel’s team stated. “Under his doctor’s instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period.” See the full statement and the affected tour dates below.
Joel performed two shows in February before postponing, and now canceling, his tour dates. All tickets for the canceled shows will be automatically refunded.
Billy Joel has announced that he will be cancelling all scheduled concerts following a recent diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH). This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance. Under his doctor’s instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period. Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health. He is grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage.
“I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding,” said Billy Joel.

I think that fall was a bit staged but Billy still has his voice. No autotune or backing tracks. Billy has been doing stadium and huge summer tours for decades now. I remember in the late 90s when he and Elton John teamed up. Then they did it again or more times claiming it was their farewell tour. The bottom line is the money is too good to give up. Its the same reason Stevie is still on the road. Stevie made more money on her 24K Gold solo tour than all of her solo tours and early Mac tours combined. Many nights her tour grossed over 1 million in one night. Its insane money. Ticket prices are super high and these concerts fill the seats. They like to perform and the money is too good to quit. In the old days artists made their money off hit albums. The songwriters got rich. Today its all touring that makes them insane amount of money. Even 1 hit wonders tour every summer and make more money than when they were a current band.
Christine kept going too. Some nights her voice would crack and eventually she was not even playing piano anymore. I say do it if it makes you happy and there are still people willing to pay to see you.
The copious amounts of cash these tours yield is the reason Mick agreed to throw Lindsey out of the band. Money changes everything.

No. That is NOT what I said. I was very clear, I said EARLY Mac tours. She made a fortune with The Dance and every tour post Dance with the Mac.
However when you don't have to split the majority of the money 5 ways is a huge multiplier. Some of her 24K Gold tour dates grossed as much as OWTS dates on a few occasions.

I am still angry Lindsey got fired but I was was just clarifying my remarks :) Ticket prices ranged from $6 to $16 from 1975 to 1985. Concert tickets peaked right before Covid. OWTS, 24K Gold, and that last Mac tour prices were high. I think I paid about $300 for my OWTS and 24K Gold seat. Some seats went for $5000 in the front rows.
Yeah there are always a few cities where sales are not great. The Mac's 2013 tour (the one right before Christine) was wildly successful. However they cancelled Montreal and South Florida due to poor ticket sales and gave that bull**** reason "scheduling conflict" excuse. That's a little greedy because its not like the arena is going to be mostly empty. But it showed how well the tour was going. They could not be bothered with a 65% sold arena
To put in perspective. In 1986 at the peak of her career her mostly sold out arena in Pittsburgh grossed $185k, in 2016 it grossed 1 million and I believe it was her longest tour with 3 legs.

So sad to see all of these classic rockers starting to fade. I will say, Billy still sounds great. I saw his second to last show at the Garden and it was fantastic. I had planned to see him play with Stevie this summer, but oh well. I was actually kind of bummed the "King of LI" was playing in NJ, so close to LI, but I guess it's tough to try to book these around the Mets and Yankees games in NY. NJ was close enough.
I was wondering if Stevie would keep these dates as solo dates. As an aside, has she ever played stadiums as a solo act?

She played at the Oakland Coliseum in 1981, part of her White Winged Dove Tour. She played also at the Rose Bowl in 1982, with 80,000 to 90,000 people in attendance, but that was a "Peace Sunday" benefit concert with Joe Walsh, Stevie Wonder, Linda Ronstadt, among others.

I don't know how simple or complicated are the arrangements, management, finance and contracts of the concerts. I mean, if I buy a ticket for a two artists gig and only one shows up, can I claim a partial refund? Or sue them for breach? Yes, in this case everyone would know Billy won't be there, but every purchase has legal terms based on the product or service advertised at the time of purchase. I don't know how easy it would be for her to show up without Billy without posing this kind of risk to the organization behind the show.
That's apart from what she wants to decide.

I hate to break it to you but Stevie was the opening act. Billy was the main artist draw. To answer your question, YES it would happen every time the main artists cancels the opening act does not go on as planned.
Its true she was being paid more than an opening act would. But Billy can fill the seats more than she can. If Stevie cancelled a gig do you think Vanessa Carlton would perform alone as the opening act? People would be upset and want their money back. Its not a 50/50 show.

She goes on first which makes her an opening act. Billy can pack a stadium, she can't. However she can still pack an arena. Their names are the same size but when they did shows last year at stadiums, her name was smaller. But he is top billed and its his name first.

Even for the 2005 Henley Tour, Don said he was opening for Stevie, however she came out for 3 songs in his set and he came out for 5 during her set.
The Rod tour also had it marketed as a co-headlining show but she opened for Rod. The difference between the Rod and Billy tour is she played maybe 80 mins before Rod and he did 90. Now she’s doing 80-90 mins before Billy and Billy was doing over 2 hours. And Billy only came out during her set for Stop Draggin’ which is what Christie Hynde did every night on the 24 Karat Gold Tour.
Stevie might be able to do a few baseball stadiums on her own but not at these Billy Joel face value prices of $600 for lower bowl and rear floor. And $300 for top deck. I’m not sure if she could play Cowboys and Giants Stadium on her own.

Thank you! This is what I was wondering--had she ever played stadiums like this on her own. I was looking and couldn't find anything.

Last year she stated at her Hersheypark Stadium concert that 30,000 people were in attendance. That's why I think she could do baseball stadiums.
Baseball stadium concerts cut down the seating capacity of the stadium significantly. So I think she could pull 30k-35k in baseball parks. If she did the football stadiums, I'm not sure she could bring 65k-70k people in at the prices she charges these days.
As far as other stadiums she's played in recent years, she played a tennis stadium in South Carolina in 2022. I think it was only about 10,000 - 12,000 seats though which is small for Stevie.

Yeah 30,000 is impressive. She draws just as many as Fleetwood Mac which started around the Enchanted tour.
I noticed reading about this Hershey stop and tour that Runnin Down a Dream is played before Stevie takes the stage and Got A Hold on Me is played after her encores.
Does this mean she's finally done with her in concert tributes?

They still gave Billy a slightly bigger and fatter font over Stevie.

Unfortunately, she performed Buffalo Springfield and Free Fallin’ at the Hershey show and I don’t doubt she’ll play those songs on her summer 2025 tour.

True. Not only is his name first but the font is different. Its so silly. Notice it does not say "special guest" Stevie Nicks. It sort of announces them together but still Billy is written first and in slightly bolder font. Would you not want to be a fly on the wall during these discussions with lawyers.
Ok. Stevie Nicks must be written almost as big as Billy Joel. It cannot say "special guest" Stevie Nicks or "opening act" Stevie Nicks.
It also cannot say Billy Joel AND Stevie Nicks because that makes it appear they are performing as equals and get paid the same.
You realize the nonsense Irving and Billy's people had to go through.

Yes, but the width of the complete name "BILLY JOEL" is the same size of the complete name "STEVIE NICKS". I guess that's why the fonts are different, to appear equal at the end.
But some lawyers were probably dissatisfied because the final perception of size didn't seem the same to them, anyway. Yes, I would have liked to see that.

She played at the Oakland Coliseum in 1981, part of her White Winged Dove Tour.
That has always confused people across the country, including compilers of tour dates and venues.
The Oakland Coliseum complex has a big sports stadium that seats about 60,000 fans (Oakland Coliseum) and an adjacent indoor arena that seats about 13,000 (Oakland Coliseum Arena).
Stevie played the indoor arena in 1981, where Fleetwood Mac played in 1982, Stevie played again in 1983, and Fleetwood played in December 1990 with Lindsey on a few songs. The coliseum (a stadium) is where Fleetwood played on big bills for Day on the Green festivals produced by Bill Graham in the Seventies.
They should never have named the indoor venue the Coliseum Arena. That’s the confusion.

Interesting. It's a typical trick.; that reminds me I went to see Roger Waters in 2007, here in Lima. It was announced "at Monumental Stadium" but actually it was at the Esplanade of Monumental, an outdoor parking area of the stadium complex. Then in 2018 he came back at that concert actually was at the stadium. Both great shows, although I liked the first one better  .

That sound similar to what they do in Portlant (i.e., the Modas Center vs. The Sky Arena at the Moda Center, which is just part of the regular venue, but sectioned off). They're always explicit about it though.

I think The Pretenders playing the 24KG shows would be a much better analogy for these concerts.
People could really have came to those shows to see the pretenders and stick around for Stevie as a bonus to who they really wanted to see. Kind of like how I would feel about the Billy Joel shows.

Pretenders played a great long set. I feel like it was 75 minutes. Stevie was very generous in giving them a lot of time. They were even on the ticket stubs!

Just for fun, I checked the 1995 setlist when the band played with Reo Speedwagon and Pat Benatar. Setlist.fm is not always 100% accurate, but gives an idea. Reo played 14 songs, the Mac 17 songs. Pat Benatar list shows 5 songs but it mentions it's not a complete list.

Pretenders rocked so much harder than Stevie and the gang; it was almost embarrassing, the difference between them.

Notice the words besides the font on those tour ads. Stevie Nicks "with" the Pretenders informs everyone The Pretenders are an opening act. Rod Stewert "and" Stevie Nicks is more subtle but still implies Stevie is the secondary or opening act. It gets even more subtle with Billy Joel because there is no "with" or "and." The font and placing of Stevie's name informs you she is the secondary act.
I know its crazy but managers fight over this stuff.

Stevie undoubtedly opened for Rod but I found the advertising for the Rod tour more respectful than the Billy shows. To me the AND means a double-bill (even though it wasn't) also you had both of their pictures on the poster. "With" to me defines it as an opening act. But regardless Stevie opened for Rod and Billy. Just as Rod opened for Billy last year and Sting opened for Billy this year and last year.
Stevie's set before Rod and Billy seems to be the same length that The Pretenders' set was on the 24KG Tour!
