...and out of those fifty years, we got less than seven years of intense activity from that line-up, a little bit of recording for Tango and a couple of reunion tours. Such a shame.

S&L joining Fleetwood Mac changed their lives. But actually it changed the lives of the rest of the band, too. And many people related to them, like Ken, Richard, John Courage, etc.

A shame to me that the last Fleetwood Mac release of new music was 11 years ago. I guess it's a miracle Extended Play was even released because Stevie refused to make a Fleetwood Mac album in 2008-2009.
But I guess 50 years ago, Stevie wanted to be where she is now at age 76, playing in front of 60,000 people...in the daylight opening for Billy Joel.

ah, misogyny.
Coz Lindsey was SUCH a peach to work with......
Sure, he helped make hits....but his ego also took over and not always to the band's artistic benefit and certainly contributed to serious tensions in the band...
Recall facts-- the tension in the band right from the get-go was NOT between Stevie and Christine, but rather between Lindsey and John, and Lindsey bossing people around and not respecting them as the talents they are.
But sure, it was the women.

Don't blame me for truth telling. It would only be natural the only woman in a band would be concerned about another woman joining that plays no instrument. Fleetwood Mac never had someone like that before. Chris was the one Stevie had to win over. Once the tequila kicked in everyone was friends.
Even Stevie called herself a house cat and she was only taken because they needed a guitarist that bad. These are Stevie's words, not mine.

that's not what you said. you said chris was right that another woman in the band wouldn't work. Facts show otherwise.....the band became super successful with another woman in the band.
So whatever you said, it's not what you think you said. You said two women didn't work. It actually did.

You know, what did John McVie once say.. something along the lines of "we all have egos" so it's just as well to remember that. Maybe Stevie wasn't the only one who couldn't control hers on her occasion, but it's the sour aftertaste of the denial of a perfect sunset for the band that irks a lot of us here, me included.
Steven Hopkins' comment re the merging of the two entities that had exactly what the other needed hits it on the nail for me. Oh, for a time machine to see and hear those early days of 1975 or their imperial pomp of the next few years. We got what we got. I'm grateful for that.

I’m all for some more 1975–76 live audio. The Trod Nossel Studios radio concert would be ideal. Yes, we’ve heard the bootleg, but it’s a lengthy, complete, and clear audio that would benefit from some remastering, and it showcases the band that first year sounding absolutely gorgeous. Instruments are on point, vocals are classic harmonizing, tempos are perfect, audience applause is miniscule. The small studio makes for a great sound field, and I still consider the “World Turning” the best from the early years.
I think the date of the in-studio show was Oct. 23, 1975.
The only thing better would be a show with some of the oddball inclusions, like “Frozen Love” or “Sunny Side of Heaven.”

Absolutely to you and SteveMacD. Whatever they are now hardly matters. Fact is, if that milestone never occurred, most of us wouldn’t even think about FM. This website certainly wouldn’t exist. All five were necessary for the chemistry to be as potent as it was—and still is when we listen to the songs.
That said, my third favorite FM record is Kiln House. Good night.

Wow, really something. I wish I could go back and see this tour especially this early on. They were about to take off with rocket fuel. In 1975 they were playing small towns, small theaters and colleges. The following year they were on a stadium tour with the Eagles, had a #1 album and Rumours was not even released yet.

It's interesting that the newspaper lists Stevie's contributions as vocals, guitar, and percussion. To my understanding, she didn't play guitar with the band in any capacity other than a rehearsal during the Rumours Tour when she attempted to play the acoustic guitar part on "Go Your Own Way". I'm curious if there were plans for her to play guitar onstage, but this never panned out. Alternatively, this could simply be a mistake from the publication.

I could be wrong but I believe she did strum some guitar on the early tour and I believe there are photos. Of course it was mostly fluff but it gave them the idea that maybe, just maybe she could handle the acoustic part of GYOW which did not work out.

How accurate is that statement, or when and where was taken, I don't know.
Maybe I'm wrong, but to qualify them as "contributions" would imply more important, frequent role. I would say they were more kind of spontaneous moments. Even if they were planned, they were like when John sang Say You Love me in 1997.

Growing up there were all sort of photos of her playing acoustic guitar on stage before the tambourine took over.
Consult Mick's book because something tells me something was in one of his books about finding her something to do on stage. It was not until rehearsing for the Rumours tour that you would never see an acoustic guitar in her hands again

I didn't find anything about her playing guitar on stage in Mick's first book, but I did find about some reviews the band got during that first tour.
And so we labored, through that whole autumn, pushing our record in every college town in America. Or so it seemed. There were some pretty rough times for the whole band, but Stevie Nicks especially went through a period of anxiety and self-doubt after getting some pretty heavy negative reviews. This was a new band to the critics as well, and we were consequently reviewed as if we were unknown. Rolling Stone said that Stevie's singing was "callow," and many reviews said something like ". . . the raucous voice of Stevie Nicks and the golden-throated Christine McVie, who's the only good thing this band has left."
Imagine if critics had commented on her playing guitar on stage.

My hunch is that is why she picked up the guitar. People were confused who is this woman at the center of the stage. Having a guitar under her arm made her appear more purposeful and it would have been her anxiety blanket.
But calm down, it would not be long that she could play the hell out of that tambourine off beat better than anyone.

To be fair we've had dueling tambourines on the Fleetwood Mac stage during Eyes of the World in 1982. One person hit the beat every time while the other one was off beat every other time and waved it around. I won't mention any names ;)

I’m not sure that Stevie ever actually played any rhythm guitar onstage. Perhaps she did on the first tour. But what song would that have been? “Blue Letter” and “Sunny Side of Heaven” are the only two possible songs I can imagine her strumming along with. All the others require a level of more advanced coordination.
But Christine’s print interview with Contemporary Keyboard provides an indirect clue:
She isn’t a great [keyboard] player, but what she plays you can elaborate on. Still, I think she should play onstage. She’s getting better all the time, and if she would play piano on one song, it would be *** great! Then she’d be known as a musician as well as just a singer.
Lindsey is a master at leaving space and punctuating empty stretches with power chorded downstrokes for rhythmic effect. I don’t think he would have ever wanted Stevie lamely filling in holes with her inorganic strumming.
I think the story that Ray Lindsey told is that he was brought in to back Lindsey on “Go Your Own Way” specifically because Stevie wasn’t doing it correctly in a rehearsal.

The GYOW acoustic part isn't super easy, so IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE for Stevie to play. She's a "sit stoned at a party and try to accompany yourself" kind of gal.
