Melody Maker published a fun little interview with Christine Perfect where she discussed a dozen contemporary songs, including Fleetwood Mac's "Coming Your Way". In this interview, she largely gushes over the band and reveals that she played piano on the song. Listening to the recording, the piano enters around the 2:41 mark, and you can hear some short piano runs around 2:59 and 3:09 in particular. Christine mentioned that the cover art for Then Play On was a painting that belonged to Mick Fleetwood's sister. She also made some snide remarks about a song with strings, which we can assume is "Searching for Madge"

Fleetwood Mac: "Coming Your Way" from the LP "Then Play On" (Reprise)

I think that this is the best album they've ever done. This is Danny Kirwan's track, musically he's incredible.

The album is an instant hit the first time you hear it. I love this track and 90 percent of the album. The only thing I don't like is a slice of classical music, something like Brahms played backwards, that comes in a middle of a jam session. I didn't really see the point of that, it puzzled me, but that's the only thing I don't like.

The cover is brilliant. It's of a painting that belongs to Mick Fleetwood's sister. I'm on this track incidentally ("Coming Your Way"), that's me playing piano. I've always been a fan of theirs, it's not family bias.

Thanks for this- I think this article came up somewhere else a while ago and it was useful as we finally got confirmation of what Christine's contribution was to TPO. I remember emailing Jeremy Spencer about this and had a lovely reply from him saying that he hadn't a clue who has playing piano on Coming your way and that maybe I should ask Peter. I suppose as Jeremy was hardly on TPO himself that kind of made sense..

I looked at an earlier thread that discussed the orchestral score on "Searching for the Madge". Any updates on this? Vaughan Williams was named as the likely composer of the score, but despite extensive efforts, a definitive song has yet to be identified.

Sadly not. If you're looking at the thread I'm thinking of, I remember contacting the Vaughan Williams society or an Appreciation forum or something like that. I got a lovely reply from someone from there who was very much a fan of "The Play On" as it happened, but no-one could identify it as being a snippet of VW. Maybe I'll take Christine's suggestion and listen to some Brahms..

The best of luck to you - but I don't really think that Brahms will lead us to the solution of that mystery. But who knows . . . ?! ;)
