Someone posted that they think this is going to be a song about women’s rights. I bet this correct because she is always trying to remain relevant and it’s election time. Didn’t she release that last song near an election? It’s so her style. She is always thinking…

A new song or album or Ep?
I imagine this is a single, any album cover she's ever done has had herself in it, and given that this one does not makes me wonder if it's just a random song she's putting out or if she's leading with a single to a new album. I'm guessing this would be some sort of political anthem and then a new album comes after.

https://www.nme.com/news/music/stevie-nicks-announces-new-single-the-lighthouse-coming-this-week-3797256
"Nicks teased the imminent track in 2022 when she shared a poem titled ‘Get It Back’, as she urged fans in the US to register to vote in the midterm elections that year. 'Read the words to my song,' she said at the time. 'I wrote it for you.'
The poem includes the lines:
'I want to be the lighthouse
Bring you all together
Bring you out in stormy weather
I wanna teach you to fight'"

When I heard "fight" I didn't relate it with politics. I immediately remembered Rolling Stone called the band in 1997 "the lovingest, fightingest, druggingest band of the 70s". So I was going to post some sarcasm about her teaching us to fight, and that it would not be the most correct way. ;)

The whole song has been posted on twitter. Yes, of course, it's political - just in time for the election, which is gross. I like the production of the song, but it's too wordy. I wish there would be rest periods when she would just shut up and let the music come through.
Overall, the song is too long and too preachy. However, it does make sense and I like the music, which is different. They needed to shave a minute off this song and could have easily. A lot of the words are redundant.

Also...I totally disagree on the stance that anyone in music or the arts doing something political is "gross". Ever heard of the 1960s?
Artists are allowed to express their opinions as much as anyone else. In terms of the public buying concert tickets or records - it doesn't negate the artists right to express their views.
Being a public figure does not automatically require them to be mute about anyone or anything.

Everyone has their right to their opinion. She is a woman and women have really been impacted these past 5 years. The question should not be why Stevie but why have women been mobilized. How did the United States get its second woman nominee of a major political party. When Stevie is writing songs like this is an example of the times we are living in. The complete meltdown of many on the right because Taylor Swift endorsed Harris was a joke. Who cares.
There is tons of hypocrisy on the left. But few point out the hypocrisy on the right. When Lebron James talks politics he's told to "shut up and dribble" and no one wants to hear him talk politics. When Drew Brees or Bret Farve talk politics they claim they are persecuted for their beliefs. Yet no one tells them to shut up and play football. When Kid Rock shoots Bud Light bottles on twitter people cheer. Stevie should not be flamed for writing something she believes in. I tend to like her dabbling into current events like Desert Angel , Street Angel, and Jane.

Maybe this indicates a full album release this winter. Is the song itself called The Lighthouse or Get It Back? Maybe the song is called Get It Back, and the whole album will be called The Lighthouse.
Didn’t Stevie say a few months ago that she was working on an album — or did she just say new music?

Yeah okay! Maybe they, or Sheryl will edit the single release down and take parts out, to reduce the length, and to make it radio friendly. Since radio prefers to keep songs to time limits, to allow for advertising etc!
Sleepless Child, you could try to contact Sheryl and suggest editing the "breathy vocal at the beginning", out! I've always loved the introduction of the voices at the beginning of 'Whenever I Call You Friend', by Stevie and Kenny Loggins, so there are many ways to introduce the beginning of a song. Kind Regards!;)

I know, I was just thinking that. Her and Lindsey have that in common in their later years. They like to write the same song over and over again.
With Lindsey it’s fast fingerpicking guitar over Lindsey’s whispered vocal.
With Stevie it’s every danmed song is going to be about the dream she had in 2008. And that’s not an exaggeration. This is is literally Show them the way 2.
If this is part of a larger album then this is an awesome indication of a potentially great album. Love the vocal and production. This song gives me hope Stevie could absolutely kill Joan of arc at 76.
But if this is just Stevie’s new thing. I’m going to write a new song every presidential election and say go vote, it’s not that good of a song. I much prefer show them the way. I know it’s not popular but that last 2 minutes is some of the best Stevie recorded music this century

I don’t dislike the song, lots of atmosphere which is good …she whispers a lot because her voice isn’t that good these days….(maybe she should lay off touring for a year)

Do you think that releasing this song almost simultaneously with the Mirage Live album is a coincidence, or is there some marketing strategy?
I don't see any connection. The election is in just over 30 days. She would have to release this now or never. She may know about the Mirage release but only us hardcore fans know about it and will buy it. But the masses that worship her who also may not know or care about the Mirage release will eat this up.
Now what is NOT a coincidence is her SNL performance that is upcoming. Now we understand that this is most likely the song she will perform. The industry has changed so much. I dont think she will release another album. If this song goes viral after SNL she can sell about 200k downloads which will yield a nice profit. Look what happened to Dreams after that Tik Tok incident. The downloads of that song soared mostly from people that did not know or own Rumours. She made some good coin with that. When Seven Wonders was used on American Horror Story I think it sold about 200k downloads immediately after. Sadly this is where the music industry is.

This is a pretty good song, my only quip would be the length of the opening part, would have worked much better to have kept that at the first 20-30 secs as an opening and crank it up to the pretty good chorus part. It does resonate and the production is pretty good. Makes me hopeful for just one more album and I don't mind if she mixes old with new as there are many gems still in the vaults.

I applaud Stevie for taking a stand on a hot button topic. She is risking losing some fans. I think you get to a certain age where you don't care what other people think. Stevie has always had her political beliefs but never wanted to talk or sing about them until a few years ago. I really like the chorus of the song and the vocal. But not so much of the verses. Reminds me of the Elvis vocal she did. Candyland? I hope though that we might get an album. Fingers crossed

it takes too long to build up. The whispering beginning is a bit cringy, she cannot pronounce "s" anymore without sounding like her dentures are slipping and she can't stay in tune well
It needs to hit the rocking part wayyyy sooner. It doesn't kick in til 2:20. That's almost a whole song length.....
She has a very personal interest in the topic of Roe v Wade. She had the choice to terminate a pregnancy(s) and live her life as she wanted. If the proposed laws (and in many states now, existing laws) were around, she'd have been either forced to have a child she didn't want, which would have been either pawned off on someone else to raise, or raised around drugs and insanity on the road, and left unattended so.... lots of pervs in show biz.... so yeah, great life for the kid. OR, she would have used her money that most people wouldn't have who aren't rock stars and found a doctor somewhere who would have terminated it for her....but medical procedures done in secret always risk being done by unqualified quacks just making a buck..... OR, by the new laws, she could have been arrested and put in jail for years, along with anyone who not only performed the procedure but anyone who drove her to the procedure, flew her to the procedure, helped pack her suitcase knowing what she was going to do, etc etc etc... Total witch hunt over something that is no one else's business. I may rag on her for some of her performances etc, but she has a vested interest in this issue. Her line "I have my scars" is not by accident......

While similar to "Show Them the Way", this song is better. The lyrics are more concrete (although she still needs an editor, but she has for 30 years) and sonically, it's more interesting. I agree about the whispered vocal, but unfortunately, her full singing voice is just shouting these days. Her voice works well in the chorus.
I don't mind the politics. Stevie is a white woman of privilege. I'm glad she is using her voice, however belatedly that may be.

She is deliberately making a POLITICAL STATEMENT, and she has chosen to articulate her political position via a song. BIG difference.
So yeah, if you don't like the political position, chances are you're not going to entirely be onboard with the song, no matter how great a song it might be. She KNOWS this. And she CHOSE to put it out anyway. She is allowed to do this. You are allowed not to like it and, if you choose, not to listen to it.

She's not alone. Howard Stern who considered himself a friend of Trump and always had him on his show said he is freaked out enough to talk more about politics. He said he does not care if he loses half of his audience but he's not going to be silent anymore and does not care who hates him for it. You would think it would be an Onion article that Dick Cheney endorsed a democrat for president. General McChrystal took so much heat as an active general who openly criticized President Obama while in office just endorsed Harris. People are no longer sitting on the sidelines.

The spooky lighthouse setting and dark, windy beach completely suits her. I really like the video even though I'm not voting her way. She should of done something like this earlier in her career. It's probably her best video.
Suits her very well. I wish someone would make an edit of the music video with all the signs and activists cut out of it.

Agreed. And don’t forget Rick Vito’s for Trump.
I know, and that bums me out :(. But having said that, I still love Rick’s music.
I know Lindsey is voting for Harris, and I strongly suspect Mick is, too. I would bet big money Billy and Bekka will vote for Harris, as well. John is the only one I’m not sure about.

The statue is the 'Winged Victory of Samothrace' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winged_Victory_of_Samothrace) and personifies the idea of victory/being victorious.

Me too. I'm a Trumpster but I do just like the atmosphere and whole power of this thing even though she is just gloming onto an issue to remain relevant. Show Me the Way, For What's Worth and now this. All her new releases are political.
Another thing about this video, Stevie looks old and weathered and so her appearance is perfect for this.

Stevie Nicks’ New Single Rocks Its Way Into The Top 10
Hugh McIntyre
https://www.forbes.com/sites/hughmcintyre/2024/09/27/stevie-nicks-new-single-rocks-its-way-into-the-top-10/
Stevie Nicks has never been afraid to stand up for what she believes in, and she’s continuing to do so with her new single. The beloved musician dropped “The Lighthouse” on Friday (September 27), and it quickly became a bestseller in the U.S.
After hours of slowly climbing the American iTunes chart, “The Lighthouse” now appears inside the top 10 on the list of the bestselling tracks in the country. Nicks’ latest sits at No. 8, as of the time of writing.
Nicks claims one of four new top 10s on the iTunes ranking. She comes in behind Cody Johnson and Carrie Underwood’s “I’m Gonna Love You” and “Timeless” by The Weeknd and Playboi Carti. Just one rung following the Fleetwood Mac star come Timcast and Phil Labonte, who push their odd collaboration “Coming Home” into the important region.
“The Lighthouse” appears to be a standalone single, as no larger project has been announced yet from the star, and it is Nicks’ first new release of 2024. She joined Dolly Parton on “What Has Rock and Roll Ever Done for You” in 2023, and her cover of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” dropped the year prior.
In a press release announcing “The Lighthouse,” Nicks’ team shared a statement from the singer-songwriter about the tune. The Grammy winner says, “I wrote this song a few months after Roe v. Wade was overturned. It seemed like overnight, people were saying ‘what can we, as a collective force, do about this…’ For me, it was to write a song.” She goes on to claim that when it comes to her latest cut, “I have often said to myself, ‘This may be the most important thing I ever do. To stand up for the women of the United States and their daughters and granddaughters—and the men that love them.’”
“The Lighthouse” was written by Nicks, Magnus Birgersson, and Vincent Villuis. The single was produced by the singer herself, as well as superstar producer Dave Cobb. Another powerhouse musician, Sheryl Crow, is credited as a producer as well, and she also provided background vocals for the song.
Nicks is scheduled to serve as the musical guest on the October 12 episode of Saturday Night Live. With a new single out, there’s a good chance she’ll introduce viewers to the song, which may help it once again when it comes to sales and streams, perhaps making the tune into a hit—if it hasn’t already become at least a minor one by that point.

She's not alone. Howard Stern who considered himself a friend of Trump and always had him on his show said he is freaked out enough to talk more about politics. He said he does not care if he loses half of his audience but he's not going to be silent anymore and does not care who hates him for it.
To be fair, Howard Stern is 70 and is worth more than $650 million. It's really not all that brave when you live in the comfort of having nothing to lose. Same with Stevie. I highly doubt a pre-Fleetwood Mac Stevie Nicks or a pre-WXRK Howard Stern would be so courageous to risk alienating half their audience to march for "the cause" while scraping to make it big.

But a pre-FM Stevie or a pre-WXRK Howard wouldn’t have had an audience to begin with. Now Taylor Swift- she is at her peak right now and she endorsed Harris, alienating many of her fans. Howard and Stevie are well beyond their peak, so while I think it’s brave of them to say who they’re voting for, they’re going to be just fine. It’s hard to boycott Stevie when she has nothing new coming down the pike. Unlike Swift, whose brand could take a hit. Of course it’s impossible to feel sorry for her because she is set for life, so if she never sells another album, it won’t hurt her.

Sheryl and the producer did a bang up job on this. Bolstering (at times almost replacing) Stevie's vocals with Sheryl's works very well. Seems Stevie can only write structurally/rhythmically incoherent songs these days, almost like a new genre all of its own. But they do well with what they were given. And the call-back to lyrics from Straight Back gave me a happy tingle (even though I don't like that song much either).
Stevie inserting herself into the song as a beacon of political activism is like a bad joke. No need for a skit on SNL... Just play the video.
Well done Sheryl.
Er, Stevie too.

You are looking at this being about money. Its far more principled about that. Howard's key demo is younger white men which is Trump's strongest group. They were friends and hung out together in their personal time. If Howard talked about politics he would get slammed by his listeners. You are trivializing endorsements being about money. People all over this country have lost family and friends over this.
I hate the hypocrisy of people flaming endorsements only on the side they don't agree with or alleging the amount of money they have insulates them from attack. That's pure rubbish. Using that logic then Kid Rock endorsed Trump just to make money and be popular. This garbage is always pushed on Fox and the right that super rich liberals are phony and out of touch and their opinions don't count. Whether you agree with Kid Rock or not, his opinion counts just as much as Howard's or Taylor Swift. No one tells Kid Rock to shut up and sing.
Regardless of how much money people have, everyone has lost friends, family, and associates over this. There are things in life more important than popularity and money in your bank account. The saddest part is none of these people are hitting the campaign trail or doing commercials for candidates. They express an opinion or state who they will vote for and there are far too many people cook up way too many reasons for their motive for doing so. I never see questioning of Ted Nugent or Kid Rock or Hulk Hogan. The right loves to pretend they are more tolerant except when it comes to political beliefs they may not agree with.
A few weeks ago there was a Sheriff in Ohio that stated his office wanted the names and addresses of anyone with a Harris sign in their yard. Can you imagine this? If a Sheriff said this about Trump signs the governor of any state and any political party would remove the sheriff from office. What was he planning to do? Arrest people? Make up investigations? He is the highest law enforcement officer in the county. Yet he is still in power, the governor of Ohio did not remove him and he is on Fox news playing a victim. The hypocrisy is so thick you can cut it with a knife. Can you imagine the meltdown on Fox News if any Sheriff said this about Trump signs? Yet somehow they make him out to be a victim. Your neighbor who does not agree with you politically is not your enemy. Your celebrity entertainer who does not agree with you is not your enemy. In 2000 and 2004 John Fogherty actively campaigned against George Bush for president yet Bush was a fan and played his music. Yet the Dixie Chicks say a joke that they were ashamed Bush was from Texas and all Clear Channel radio stations pulled their music and they were boycotted from Country Music. Can you imagine if Kid Rock was boycotted by 85% of radio stations? So let the boycotts of Stevie begin!

I have a diiferent point of view. Of course I know this is an elections year for the US. And I am aware of some events, polls, the candidates, etc. But despite that, and as a foreign viewer, I don't relate the video so much to the current political situation, the elections, but mainly to feminism.
And it just makes me think that the world and times have changed. In the 70s and 80s this video would have attracted a lot of attention. I don't remember having seen video clips about it, much less from young artists. Today it is one more expression among many.

I agree- the video (and song) aren’t about politics, it’s about feminism and the issue of choice. Now that means it’s at odds with certain issues in politics, but it’s not an anti-Trump message. It’s a pro-choice message.
Personally, the song does nothing for me. It’s 100 times better than Show Me the Way, but considering that was the worst song I think she’d ever written or sang, that’s hardly high praise. I saw the names of the co-writers, and I’ve never heard of them. I do love the lyrical throwbacks to the Nightmare and Straight Back, and kind of wish she had just reimagined both songs as a mash up with some new lyrics. I think it would have made for a much better song. The video is interesting- what can I say, I love a stormy sea and lightning as much as anyone else, and I thought the protest clips were effective when juxtaposed with those scenes, but longer clips with Stevie would have been nice. She looks good, but is it because she really looks good, or because the clips are so fast it LOOKS like she looks good? Guess we’ll find out when she performs on SNL.
Would have been nice to see Sheryl and Lori in the video… more women to get the message across.

Great post bwboy. It’s about choice and one’s right to care for their health. No hints about Trump in the song. I think she looks good too.
I hope it’s not disrespectful but her marching in place dance in the room could have been left out and she could have just stomped one foot to the beat of the song. She looked rather elderly doing that march in place. But the twirl and her head banging was amazing as was her dancing in the lighthouse holding her dress.
I don’t know about the song. I think Show Them The Way was a better lyric. I don’t mind that this is wordy, the lyrics just don’t seem to challenge my vocabulary. I feel like she should have opened a thesaurus. The video is incredible.

I was excited to see something new coming from her and then so bummed out to hear it was going to be another political statement. For so long she was savvy enough to realize that few people want to be lectured by a celebrity as to what their beliefs should be no matter which side of the aisle you are on. Has there actually been any press about this being a harbinger of a forthcoming album, or is this just hopeful conjecture by some?

I think that SHE thinks political songs will somehow get her more attention than her tired old dirges would garner.
I have listened to The Lighthouse a few times and it has grown on me, (a bit)
I quite like the rousing feel it gives.
The song has a definite message and in that instance gives an anthem feel.

Here is what she told Mojo magazine a few months back:
“At the end of pandemic, I finally started to write again,” Nicks tells MOJO’s Bob Mehr. “I’ve got this song about women’s rights that I think is really strong. And I wrote a song called The Vampire’s Wife, which is one of the best things I’ve ever written. It’s a story song, like Gypsy’s a story song, and Rhiannon’s a story song. So maybe that’s the beginning of an album.”
Nicks plans to go into the studio to record her new material later this summer, following her forthcoming run of European dates, including her headlining show at Hyde Park in July.

She was in Hershey last night, but she referred to last night's show as the end of two years of touring, so in hindsight, I'm not really surprised that she didn't add something completely new to the set on the final night of the tour. I'm also thinking that the band that performs the song on SNL might include Sheryl Crow and might not be the same exact line-up as her touring band.

I agree with this comment! This is the downside of fame, when you're a public figure, you're judged for everything you do and say, unfortunately!
Even Katy Perry, who just performed at the Australian AFL Grand Final on Saturday, is getting negative reviews by some people in the audience.

Why be sorry? It's just the truth. And actually it’s no big deal, IMHO. How many 70s 80s stars still sell millions? I guess just a few. Just for example I was checking Elton John's latest albums and obviously sales can't be compared when he was a young mega star. It seems The Lockdown Sessions is the only one who has sold millions lately. And my guess is that largely thanks to Dua Lipa.

Respectfully, let me make sure I’m understanding you correctly. It’s ok to complain that an artist is releasing politically driven material, call them any number of things….BUT any mention of the political situation the material mentions or pertains to is out of bounds and those people should be banned for 30 days? It's ok for you to express your displeasure about the topic, it's ok for anyone to agree with you and continue on that line of thought along with you, but suddenly it's not ok for others with a slightly different take? It is a blurred line on this topic, since they've never been a political band(not counting Clinton inauguration), and all of the sudden it's a forced topic here, due to this song.
I'm saying that on Facebook, I want to see your pork chop and your puppy. Bitch about politics, ON EITHER SIDE, and I'm removing you from my feed.

I have listened to The Lighthouse a few times and it has grown on me, (a bit)
I quite like the rousing feel it gives.
The song has a definite message and in that instance gives an anthem feel.
(Bit of overkill really..)
I do not pretend to understand US law, regarding Abortion.
But the message about a woman’s rights is Universal.
It was not grabbing me musically. The hook isn’t there. I’ve always thought that if you have a weak or nonexistent hook, you’d better make the song up-tempo. But this is a down-tempo dirge without musical ear candy. (Naturally, your ears may vary.)
Someone in this thread (sorry I can’t recall who) said that the lyrics were a little too concrete and simplistic, or nonfigurative. I don’t think I mind that — in fact, there are times I really prefer that from Stevie. But there’s something about this lyric that doesn’t feel genuine to me. It feels like a trendy statement. Stevie may not understand that a political statement (which she wants to make here) is more powerful when it feels like a blood-and-flesh extension of the writer. When you believe that the writer has more skin in the game as opposed to an opinion or general conviction — a position paper — you give yourself over to them. Remember “Lady”? None of us talked about it at the time — not really— but that was a feminist anthem that grew organically out of Stevie’s own personal brush with feeling shut out or cornered by bossy men.
I'm tired of knocking on doors
When there's nobody there
I believed her so much more than I believe her in the new song. “Lady” is a “concrete” lyric from Stevie’s soul, married to the perfect plaintive melody — and she wrote it over fifty years ago. “Lady” and “Landslide” and “Bella Donna” say more about a woman being unjustly ramrodded in the music world than we ever realized. The trick with the lyric is to advocate for a woman to personalize and enrich your advocacy for women. With “The Lighthouse,” Stevie sat down to write a capital-S Statement, and it seems mechanistic and tuneless. She did the same thing in “Show Them the Way,” and none of us bought that either.
The time keeps going on by
And I wonder what is to become of me
And I’m unsure, I can’t see my way
And he says, “Lady, you don’t have to see”
This is all Stevie ever really needed to say on the matter. Amazing that this came out of a woman in her early 20s — a woman who wasn’t Joni Mitchell or Laura Nyro.

He was not criticizing the production or craft IMO .It seems that he was criticizing the song itself and comparing it very effectively with songs that she had written decades ago when she was still a good writer. The production is actually very good and the video is her best since the 1980s.The song itself does not compare with her best self penned hits of the past the last of which was the excellent Rooms On Fire more than 35 years ago.

I do think the production is great and the video is probably the best of her career. Both make the song better. I like the straightforwardness of the song, but it is too wordy and the chorus isn’t catchy. It is powerful though.

From what I can see it's from an alt-right propaganda site, most of the writers are young antifeminists from the right-wing. I've seen another article on Stevie quoting her 1992 Vox interview to show that feminism is a propagandist lie that ruins women's lives and another incredibly bitter article about Taylor Swift. I guess it really stings them that all the coolest celebrities are leaning for the opposite party.

Oh, I hate this talk of abortion here. I don’t know why, I mean, I’m not a woman, I’ve never been in a relationship where someone had an abortion, and I’m pro-choice. Maybe it’s the judgement of people who’ve had abortions? I don’t know why that bothers me., it just does.
But regardless of my views, here I am commenting on it. Maybe everything said here would have been true- Stevie is definitely self-absorbed, and her drug use and rock and roll lifestyle and constant touring would very likely have negatively impacted how good of a mother she would have been. Or maybe it would have been the opposite- maybe if she had had a baby, her maternal instincts would have kicked into overdrive and she would have shaped up and met the challenge. Who knows? And then we likely wouldn’t have had many FM releases after Rumours, let alone many solo releases. I’m not saying it was a complete case of careerbs motherhood, but who knows?
For all we know, Christine could have had an abortion or two, as well. I mean, she was so private, and much much less forthcoming than Stevie was. And Christine never had children, but maybe if she had, everything said about Stevie could apply to her- Christine drank, did drugs, smoked, etc. Would she have been able to successfully raise a child? With Dennis Wilson as the father? It’s easy to be judgemental in that way, so I prefer not to think about it. Neither one of them had children for whatever reason. I think it’s very telling that Lindsey was older and probably much more mature as a person when he had children… at least that we know of. He had the luxury of having sex with women and not getting pregnant himself. Here’s that slippery slope again, but for all we know, he could have paid for girlfriends to have abortions. Would he have been a good father in 1978-1987?
I’m not saying this subject shouldn’t be discussed here, I’m just suggesting we continue to be respectful of everyone, from members of the band to the folks who come here to the Ledge. I have to think this subject could be triggering for some folks, who may unknowingly click on this subject not expecting the subject of people being horrible mothers or how it was wrong of someone to have an abortion, or how it was better for the child that it was aborted. At that point the discussion just seems… uhh. Only my opinion, and I hope I don’t get flamed for expressing it, because I’m honestly not trying to say people shouldn’t be discussing it, if that’s what they want to talk about.

That song was a hair better than Show Them The Way. I dunno why her producer can’t get better material out of her anymore.
Because she's entirely surrounded by "yes" people and expects the same with the people she works with in the studio. She only chooses to work with people who will play second fiddle or have the "starstruck" approach and let her run the show, because she's a legend - who are they to tell her. She'll work with the producer that is just happy to put it on their resume and be a puppet the entire time.
Anyone who even remotely suggests that a verse be moved, cut, or re-written would get the same lecture that Lindsey was given in 2002. Dave Stewart may perhaps be the only person in the past 15 years that was able to get her rambling poems down to some resemblance of a melody/chorus/verse.
Her newer material isn't great because she's out of practice. She openly admitted she didn't write anything until the tail end of the pandemic. That's a year right there. She probably didn't write much of anything the year leading up to the pandemic either.
Long gone are the days where she had a habit of working on demos and folks like David Ortiz were helping her at home to craft demos. She's largely isolated and no longer surrounded by creative folks or even other musicians/writers.

Some chart info for The Lighthouse
https://www.forbes.com/sites/hughmcintyre/2024/10/14/stevie-nicks-scores-a-brand-new-top-10-single-in-america/
Stevie Nicks isn’t known as one of the more prolific musicians from her generation. She was involved in some truly massive hits and albums for decades, both as a member of Fleetwood Mac and then on her own, but these days, she’s largely focused on her past material.
Her somewhat sparse release schedule means that whenever she does share anything new, people pay attention. Nicks’ fans quickly latched onto her latest single, “The Lighthouse,” and they turned the cut into a quick smash in the U.S.
“The Lighthouse” debuts on a pair of Billboard charts this frame. The single brings Nicks back to the highest tier on one of the two tallies it reaches, and it’s another big win on the second roster.
Nicks debuts “The Lighthouse” at No. 5 on the Rock Digital Song Sales chart. The tune marks her fifth solo top 10 hit on Billboard’s list of the bestselling rock-only tracks in the nation.
Somewhat surprisingly, it hasn’t been very long since Nicks last collected a top 10 smash on the rock sales ranking. In the spring of 2023, she joined Gorillaz on their tune “Oil,” which spent one week at No. 8 on the chart.
“The Lighthouse” also reaches the all-genre Digital Song Sales roster. On that even more competitive chart, Nicks starts her latest offering at No. 17. Luminate reports that in its first tracking period, the single sold a little more than 3,100 copies throughout the U.S.
Nicks earns her fourth solo placement on the Digital Song Sales chart this week. “The Lighthouse” is her third-highest-rising appearance, and it marks her first new win on the tally since “For What It’s Worth” peaked at No. 42 in 2022. Since then, Billboard has shortened the list, as it now features just 25 spaces.
“The Lighthouse” starts its time on the Rock Digital Song Sales roster as the second-loftiest debut. It comes in behind only Timcast and Phil Labonte’s “Coming Home,” which is new at No. 2. Over on the all-style Digital Song Sales list, Nicks introduces her single behind fellow new arrivals from Carrie Underwood and Cody Johnson, The Weeknd and Playboi Carti, and the aforementioned Timcast and Labonte.

That is false. People are responsible for their own actions. Also, this song is about voting. Voting is making a decision that are in your best interest. That implies a Democratic process where people with different opinions have different viewpoints make a decision and act upon it. If we’re all supposed to have the same opinion about the same thing then we would not have a Democratic process of making decisions therefore in a forum such as this on a subject that is divisive, such as this people are allowed to have disagreements and make decisions that are reflective of their viewpoints. in terms of how that relates to Stevie, she opened herself up to scrutiny by writing and publishing and recording and distributing a song and doing interviews about a very touchy subject that people would have to make a choice. For people that claim to be pro-choice, they sure do like to suppress the viewpoints and opinions of others.

And actually, Stevie was NOT the one who made her private, reproductive history public. That was done to her by a MAN.... and yes, we're looking at YOU, Don Henley. He had no business putting that out in public, but he did.
And btw, do we know whether he encouraged her to terminate the pregnancy? offer to pay for it for her? (not that she couldn't afford it, not what I meant), or did he say hey, I'll raise this kid by myself if you give birth? Hmm... let's ponder that for a minute. What do you think? Don Henley sucks. I believe it was in the book "I Want My MTV: the Uncensored Story of the Music Video Revolution" that tells the story of him throwing a fit backstage at the VMAs in the late eighties because he had lost an award. And a producer who knew he was set to win a different award later in the evening could only get him to calm down and return to his seat by hinting that he would be getting a different award later.

I know. She has tons of young fans from the audiences of Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, Maggie Rogers, and her other young artist friends.
She did the song on Saturday Night Live, she did a huge RS interview, and she did CBS News Sunday. I'm surprised the song didn't even debut in the 90s on the Hot 100. It's more "hit" oriented than Show Them The Way. Then again her last true song that sounds like a hit was 2011's Secret Love.
These songs are all hits in your heart right Homie?

I think she wanted this song to be a hit Billboard charting song. She has done so much promotion for this song: Rolling Stone feature interview, CBS News, Morning Joe, People, Jimmy Kimmel. For all of her popularity that she revels in and the interviewers who salivate over her new song, she can’t sell new music. Her last two new songs were also co-writing compositions.

Not on the chart that matters: Billboard Hot 100.
It's on a Christmas songs iTunes chart. That "Christmas" song is a cover and duet with a major sports and podcast figure.

She definitely will sing it in concert now that Trump was narrowly elected. It'll be great for her to sing a new song in concert for the first time since 2017. Even though the 24KG songs she sang in 2017 were all written decades ago.

I may be sorry once I do, but I’m getting a little tired of “Edge of Seventeen.”
My favorite vocal since the millennium was “Not Fade Away.” But as far as I know, she has never done that during one of her concerts. Jesus, Stevie, are you crazy? It has crowd pleaser written all over it. Even Tom Petty used to sing it onstage.

I thought the same. However I think the strong majority does apply to the electoral votes difference (what I understand is what ultimately matters), but not so much for the popular vote (50% vs 48.3%, not strong but I don't know to consider it narrow).
And I've not been tired of EoS, though I do regulate the frequency with which I listen to it (and other songs).

The popular votes only matter in EACH STATE. Win that state, then you acquire the number of electoral votes from that state. I've always thought that the popular overall vote should decide it, but that's not the way it works, unfortunately.

Trump wasn't only up against Kamala. He was up against the media, Hollywood and the Washington establishment. After everything they've done to him, he has won. The country gave him a mandate. The Democrats, including that poster, always try to belittle that. They are the establishment who lost.

no, I know dozens of woke, over-educated weirdos who totally voted for Trump. Bizarre but there you go....
The media wants to stick with the lazy narrative that it's just working class folks who voted for him. He conned a ton of better educated people also. I know several doctors whose patients are mostly folks on government assistance of some kind-- social security, disability, etc.... all the programs the new administration wants to cut (because you know, being old and/or disabled is grifting). So these healthcare providers, who bill literally 80-90% of their services to the government to get paid, will lose most of their income if all the proposed cuts go through. And they still don't see it. :distress:

Popular vote is the will of the people and the two million votes or so Trump won it by is narrow considering over 150,000,000 people voted. In 2020, President Biden won over 51% of the popular vote. Trump is at 49.9% now.

Yeah your talk about the popular vote margin is the Democrats cope. Trump didn’t have a Covid epidemic to help him win like Biden or 9/11, which helped Bush win the popular vote by a lot. Republicans are enjoying the victory. It's Democrats who keep bringing up the margin of victory as a form of coping - "Oh, he didn't win by that much!!!" Well, a win is a win, and Democrats can't hold the popular vote over him now.

there are very few truly small family farms left anywhere in the UK or the US. They are worth millions....even if they are still family owned. The size and scope of a "family" farm today bears no resemblance to what they were when they were founded. They are multi-million pound/dollar businesses. If anyone else wants to leave properties to their kids that are worth multiple millions, they have to pay taxes. Nothing different.

It’s interesting how polarized the human race is. There will never be world peace. If there were only two people left on the planet they would still disagree and defend their stance and fight until there is only one person left. That person would then be their own worst enemy.

I’ll stay on topic of Stevie….so her friend Taylor Swift’s boyfriend’s team quarterback was fined $14,069 for a finger gesture (not the middle finger). Has the over sensitivity of our society gone too far when pointing two fingers in celebration is considered emulating a violent gesture? Or should it be considered acceptable to not allow any expression that “offends someone”?

This is a tax that very persons estate is libel for, in the UK.
Ordinary householders pay 40% Farmers are being asked to pay just 20%
Why should they be exempt ?
It will only affect farms worth over £1 million
Ordinary householders will be due if their estate is worth £325,0000
I would say farmers are getting the best deal here..

Interesting, I didn’t know it was only 20% -that makes sense. I wonder why they are protesting when they are in fact getting a better deal than the family that owns a manor estate that does not bring in income.

I’ve come late to this posting party because I wanted to get “The Lighthouse” under my skin before I commented.
I’ve been pretty critical of Stevie (musically and otherwise) these past eight years, especially after the tone-deaf “Show Them the Way” debacle. I was prepared to consider “Lady” her last great moment. But, well, I am IMPRESSED with “The Lighthouse” as a song, as a statement, as a bold move away from the private mythology of songs like “Sara” and “Silver Girl” to what I believe is a thoroughly successful public statement. Here, she uses her personal story (which Don Henley had no right to blab about before she came forward with it on her own terms) and creates something that speaks directly to the moment, to the ongoing struggle of women pursuing reproductive freedoms and full agency with their own bodies. Her live performance of the song on SNL surpasses the recorded version. And her interview with CBS shows her using her celebrity for something greater than herself. I never thought I’d say this again: I salute her. For this at least.

My point is that Stevie is 76....and as a result she gets certain allowances, certain "passes" when her vocals are not what they were when she was 26 or 36 or even 46.... She sang Landslide at the MJFox thing, and it was cheered because she is who she is, and because she has the history and past successes that she has and all of that.... Because the vocal performance she gave that night was...less than. It was serviceable, but it was not great. If she was starting out, or if she was on any of those singing competition shows....no one would have said "Wow that's an amazing singer!!" It would have been good for a dinner theater or cruise ship show. But.....because she's got 50+years of success behind her....and because she's pushing 80....allowances are made. Clear enough?

She’s definitely giving all her energy lately to what’s important to her. She has always done things on her terms, and she still is today. Commendable. Impressive, too, considering her health ailments and all those historical forces marshaled against her.
But, Tony, I just can’t get fully into this song — it’s drony to me and the lyrics feel fresh off her diary page. I would never say that to Bob Dylan, however, whose last two studio albums were acclaimed for their songwriting rather than the legacy and longevity of the guy himself.

[QUOTE=reebokandlace;1298363] When/If the glitter fades she will walk away. /QUOTE]
SHHHEEEIIIITTTTT! Who TF are you kidding? Her star faded 40 years ago. She'll play for 50 people, as long as they still convince her that she made good life choices.
It's sad af, actually. She's the poster child for bad decisions in life.

Clear but your response to my post about her not singing The Lighthouse at the fundraiser had nothing to do with what I was saying. Maybe you thought I was talking about her not having confidence in Landslide but I was talking about The Lighthouse. She’s very confident in Landslide, that’ll never leave her concert sets.
but why do you think that is?
She didn't sing it because NO ONE KNOWS IT.
EVERYONE knows Landslide.
Also, of course, Landslide is very sentimental, it's a quiet folky-ballad....more appropriate to the event than a bombastic anthem about reproductive choice.
That's the thing with a political anthem....it is really only appropriate in certain situations.
But again, no one knows it. And frankly, when this moment in time passes (it pretty much has now that the election is over) the song will be really nothing more than a footnote in her legacy. The fact she took a political stand actually will count for more than the song itself, which I agree is quite drone-y.
And further, because Landslide is quieter and slower, she knows she'll probably be able to croak that out til the very end of time. The Lighthouse requires a lot more energy for her to perform, and the older she gets the trickier that gets. It's just not a "get out the lighter/phone flashlight and wave it around" kind of song like Landslide is live, and it's not a dance-able song like Stand Back or even Edge of 17, and it has no emotional connection to the audience (it's not a song that takes them back to childhood/highschool/college etc). No one is going to play The Lighthouse at their wedding/funeral/graduation, but they sure as shoot do Landslide.
That's why she didn't sing The Lighthouse. :xoxo:

Roger to all! As an aside, isn’t the only thing live from her two television performances of Lighthouse her vocal? Isn’t every other sound the track?

Just to add, Leelee Buckingham sang “Landslide” with her school choir. Lindsey played guitar with them. This was AFTER Stevie had him fired!
THAT’S how universal “Landslide” is.
At this point, I seriously wonder what some want from this woman at her age? When my mother was 76, she was a multiple stroke survivor, used a walker, was having UTIs every nine weeks or so, and was a fall risk. Volunteer at a nursing home to see what 76 actually looks like.

:nod:As long as fans continue to buy seats Stevie will continue to tour. She could go out there and sing the ABCs and Old McDonald out of tune and people are just happy to be in her presence…. When/If the glitter fades she will walk away. Until then she will continue to rock on. She is raking in a ton of money. She loves touring. The press has been kind to her. There is no reason to stop.

yep. and clearly she enjoys it. she was kinda whiny during Covid about being stuck at home and missing out on things and losing her energy. I think she's embracing all these opportunities because, kinda to Steve's point, age will eventually catch up with her and she knows it. So she's maximizing everything she can.

Then you have Diana Ross at nearly 81 years old moving her body to the music with excellent rhythm and singing extraordinary vocals to a theater of probably 2,000 people with joy. Not phoning it in like "Queen of Rock" Stevie Nicks.

Oh yes. I had already seen some 2024 videos of Diana. Awesome performances for her age.

What “76 actually looks” like is varied… Every human body ages differently. I know people who are 50 and look worn, wrinkled and tired. I know many people at 75 who look amazing….and people in their 90’s still going about their normal routines… gardening, playing cards, walking for miles, drinking wine daily. So many factors contribute to how mobile, agile and healthy a person is at 76… genetics, lifestyle, environment, mental well being. Stevie has lived a good, comfortable life. It shows.

I get that, David. You have a keen ear. I really liked the SNL live version of it. Not as crazy about the recorded version. Droning—yes. But that’s part of the reason I dig it. It’s a long, drawn-out cry. For what it’s worth, I have always liked Illume for this reason.
