View Full Version : Songbird- The album
I was listening to the Songbird cd today and I was thinking….What? Some of the remixes are cool and different from the original. Having the two unreleased tracks, Slow Down and All You Gotta Do and Songbird with the orchestra is worth the price for me but what about her amazing version of I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You? Got a Hold on Me and other stand outs from the earlier years. …..again I see a missed opportunity.

Many including myself speculated that the odd collection of songs was maybe because she no longer owned the rights to them? That could be totally incorrect but was a theory floated around at the time. Besides getting a CD with Cant Help Falling In Love, I would have loved a remix of Love Will Show Us How which was a hit and might as well throw on Got A Hold On Me. I am still not a fan of the orchestra remix of Songbird. But the best part of this album is that she got to see it released and hear it.

I wonder if it was done in prep for the Rhino reissues we got of In The Meantime and Self Titled? If she was still with us, it might have been part of a bigger release strategy?

Yes, I know and I commented on the original thread. I wanted to bring it up again for some fresh discussion. It would have been great to have had a great retrospective release of her “ Greatest Tracks” released while she was alive so she could have appreciated the “love”

Oh—ok! Well, fresh discussion: it’s a failed compilation but one I gladly bought for the two “new” songs and the reworking of “Songbird.” It took me a while to get used to the orchestration in the latter but it ultimately moved me.
With time, I look back on the remixes from her last two solo albums and shake my head in wonder…

Its funny that Gyn Johns produced the album. He is the one that Stevie hates for Street Angel.
My hunch is he did not go for her work ethic. She was still under klonopin for much of it and I imagine her late night performances did not go over with him. But that is just a hunch. I see him standing up to her. He has produced everyone and all the big rock bands and did not need to bend to the knee for her.

It would have been interesting to take the vocals from this album and record them with production and accompaniment from Lindsey and the BuckVie band. How would it have sounded?

I didn't really *get* what the album was supposed to be but that would have been fine except it didn't really hang together for me. Yes would have loved Can't Help Falling In Love or demos. It felt like a budget odds and sods album they used to make cheaply in the 80s/90s. Although now Im glad it exists and we got more interviews with just her. Echoing your thoughts: I think it may have been part of a bigger strategy that got stopped due to her passing.
