Anyone else see this? It appears to be the full set from the 1982 The Forum shows. The album cover is really good. Don’t Stop is the early release.

Hopefully this means we’ll get the videos soon too.

This is really cool to get an official release of a Mirage show. I was really, really hoping the next release would be one of the complete tusk shows we don't have i.e. Richfield etc. Maybe next year!

They did quite a few shows in Richfield (Cleveland). I would love a "real" show from those. Not the Mirage Tour LA, labeled as Cleveland.

I am kind of surprised they went with a Mirage show for an official release, primarily because it's probably the one tour where Stevie's voice was the weakest link (it did make for a killer sisters of the moon!)

She shines, however. The Chain howls are iconic, in my opinion. And most every other SOTM is boring compared to the HBO version.

All true AND I absolutely love Lindsey's guitar solos on Rhiannon/Sisters. It's also the only tour where his electric guitar sounds completely different because of the mesa boogie effects board he was using. Hold Me from the deluxe live album is still one of the tracks I go back to and play all the time.

Not really. There are several nights of Sara in 1982 that Stevie hits the high notes on Sara as if it was December 1979. She was at peak powers but yes her voice was fried on some songs. That HBO Rhiannon is an example.
If you check on the Mirage show in NJ and play Sara its never been sung the same way since. It was the last days of the super high ooooooooooooo's that she pulled off perfectly. We also get the vocal bridge on Gypsy that she does quite nice.

I'm nitpicking, but it would have been an extra bonus had this release been from 10/22. We only have Brown Eyes from that date as an official release.

From ultimate classic rock site, which I think they might have their facts backwards. Brown Eyes is the only track labeled as 10/22 on the deluxe Live album.

All of the Mirage live tracks on the Mirage box are not specified by date, they all say 10/21-10/22. So we don't really know which is which. There's a confusing game via process of elimination awaiting us lol.

Among the nearly two dozen tracks on Mirage Tour '82 are six previously unreleased recordings from the Oct. 21 concert, including "Landslide," "Don’t Stop" and "Never Going Back Again."

Other songs recorded on Oct. 22 have appeared on other releases over the years, including Live Super Deluxe Edition, Mirage Super Deluxe Edition and the 1983 concert video Mirage Live.

Since this release is clearly labeled as 10/21 - I suppose you could compare these tracks to the video release and any tracks that don't match would presumedly be from 10/22.

Disregard: this release is a mix of both 10/21 and 10/22.

I wouldn’t necessarily trust any of those dates on the labels of these releases. Best to trust your own ears. The HBO video seems to mix the two nights — remember that sloppy cut during “Sisters of the Moon” and the change of clothing during “You Make Loving Fun”?

Shame that the label can or won’t get its hands on the October 18 concert, a superior concert that features Henley on “Leather and Lace.”

Wait, what change of clothing during You Make Loving Fun? I’ve never noticed that before. And where is the cut in Sisters of the moon?

Yeah I’d love to see a video of Fleetwood Mac playing Leather and Lace with Don Henley. Wasn’t it just Lindsey, Christine, Stevie, and Don Henley or were John and Mick on bass and drums too? It’s been a while since I’ve heard that bootleg.

The HBO show has really, really bad edits. You never noticed the skip in beat in Sisters and the amateur splice in tape during Sisters? Right after Lindsey sings and Stevie comes out right before she takes the mic again. I am guessing they wanted the speaking in tongues night but the rest of the song was better the other night. So they are edited together rather badly. Also you can see right as the lights go out after Sisters a quick shot of Stevie bowing with a tambourine. They made it appear Sisters was the last song instead of Go Your Own Way.
I had not noticed clothes changing during YMLF but someone said for the HBO nights, Christine's keyboards were loaded with other prop organs that were not real or plugged in. I have no knowledge of that but I read that here.

The tape is spliced together right around 6:04. You can hear it and see it.

I've listened to countless Mirage shows and Tusk with Sisters of the moon. The L.A. Forum show she does something I've not heard her do before with the "Sister, brother, sister, brother" This version is also the only one I heard her speak in tongues. Dear God the blow must have been so good that night in addition she was hamming it up for HBO.

I watched YMLF but did not see a clothing change. However the close up in the end of Stevie (yeah yeah) she's got some sort of cape on? Is this close up of Nicks and her "yeah yeah" part edited in?

I love the HBO show and we could spend forever dissecting the good, bad, awesome, crazy, blah blah blah.
One part that I LOVE because its pure camera effect you would never see today is when the Chain is going strong near the end of the vocals and the camera is on Stevie close up. The camera goes out of focus to then focus on Chris's close up. That's the way it was done in those days but that effect is so cool and prove its really live stuff.
I always thought Stevie looked stoned during Gypsy but her vocals are perfect. I also love the side eye Chris gives Stevie when she comes on stage during YMLF. It may not have meant what it looks like but it really stands out. "Go back in the tent and do your blow darling, this is my song. You are not needed."

You are so correct. I just listened to it. Great trivia question and you nailed it. It is a great version though but not as powerful as L.A. Her voice seemed to be in better shape in L.A. too. Sometimes edits are made to cover up a mistake by the band. I wonder if the band was tighter on one night of Sisters and not the other. When they saw the speaking of tongues they figured they had to put that part in from the other night.
On another note, gosh I love Christine's keyboard playing on sisters. Its so haunting and so signature Christine.
Could you imagine the stories some of these camera men could tell if they are still alive.

Heads up - it looks like NTF is the edited version  If you zoom in on the image of the CD packaging you'll see "9:06" next to the song title on the disc.

I bet some idiot edited the tape back in the day and the entire version doesn't even exist anymore OR the full length version would prevent the entire show fitting on two discs. We're only talking about 2-ish additional minutes. I haven't had enough coffee to do that kind of math.

So it seems the difference with the 2016 Deluxe Disc 3 is the songs not included there. If so, I would only buy those songs, if allowed, and avoid the entire album. Don't wanna more duplicated versions in my library.

To add another wrinkle to this puzzle...I'm pretty sure folks determined that the tracks from the 2016 Deluxe were sourced from the video, not the actual master tapes. I don't know how true that actually is. That could be an (incorrect) assumption that was made based on the NTF edit and the absence of the rest of the show.

Fast forward to the Live Deluxe package and additional songs like Brown Eyes were released that were not originally on the HBO video.

It's possible that AFTER the 2016 Mirage Deluxe package, they found the actual master tapes which led to the additional tracks on the Live Deluxe and now this stand alone release.

TLDR: the sound quality on this set could be better than the 2016 tracks. We don't have anything to compare yet. We can preview Don't Stop, but that wasn't part of the 2016 tracks.

There's a guy that works on all of the recent Little Feat releases at Rhino who also posts on a music message board. He's definitely shared his experience in unearthing live tapes that were presumed lost that were later discovered. Even with folks working diligently to organize all the material in the vault storage facilities, they're still discovering reels placed in the wrong box, or content on reels not labeled etc. I'm definitely curious if they've had the masters since 2016 or if they were recently discovered.

Does anyone know who is actually developing this release? What I mean, I remember when the Dance was coming out, and Lindsey said in an interview that he and the record company disagreed about which songs to include on the MTV Special; he said he had fought for Gypsy to be aired because it had wasn’t on as many releases as other FM/Stevie songs. And on the Deluxe Editions, it seems like Lindsey chose many of the outtakes and alternate takes, and chose the songs for the Live rerelease. For this Mirage release, I’m curious if Lindsey was the one who did the splicing in Sisters of the Moon, for example. I just can’t see an executive doing something like that, but I could see Lindsey or someone else in the band doing it. And since was fired, it seems unlikely he’d be doing anything behind the scenes with this release.

So to sum up this long question- does anyone think it was the band who made the editing decisions for the special? Or that anyone in the band is playing an active role in the new release?

It's doubtful they have much involvement beyond legally signing off on it. However, with most of them selling their publishing...I don't know how much that even impacts the need for them to sign off on anything. Rhino/Warners own the masters.

I had a brief exchange with the guy who works on all of the Little Feat remasters/reissues. He mentioned that Rhino has a whole separate team that handles Fleetwood Mac releases, he specifically works on the team doing the Little Feat work.

I am a little surprised that camp Stevie signed off on this one, especially since she's not a fan of her more coked up performances. Then again, she might not have that much leverage to block it.

I doubt some of the members are even aware that it’s in the works. I think their business offices provide whatever input may be needed.

I hate to look a gift horse (Rhino) in the mouth — I shore do appreciate the work they’re doing with these live packages — but I wish they would reach out to some of us (me in particular) for which material to hunt down. The Mac was poorly recorded at the Forum that year — that arena is notorious for terrible sound.

There are shows that Rhino has dug up parts of which were infinitely better recorded and allow for more effective mastering: Kansas City 8/24/80, Cleveland 5/20/80, Omaha 8/21/80 (Think About Me, Angel, and Songbird, respectively). We could use all of those in their entirety. Surely there must be another 1982 show that the band recorded more than adequately — outdoor shows in an amphitheater often sound a lot better in recording. The outdoor shows, if they’re available, would make great releases: Alpine Valley, Irvine Meadows (with Henley), Houstin at the Summit, Tempe at Compton Terrace, Memphis at the Coliseum, Sacramento at Cal Expo.

Rhino, we love you. Dig, dig, dig.

An '80 live box set would be amazing, I too would have preferred any of those over the '82 Forum show.

It would also be amazing to have clean copies of the Japan and Australia '80 shows. The circulating copies sound terrible with so many generations of tape hiss.

I think Brian transferred the Sydney March 15 1980 (Hordern) from my cassette from Maureen directly to digital. He may have the best-possible digital copy of it.

Yes, at iTunes all song descriptions says Live at the Forum, Inglewood CA 10/21/82

But Rhino page says This 22-track live collection features six previously unreleased recordings from the October 21, 1982 show, including favorites like “Landslide,” “Don’t Stop,” and “Never Going Back Again.” The other songs were recorded at the October 22 show and have appeared on various releases through the years, including Live Super Deluxe Edition (2021), Mirage Super Deluxe Edition (2016) and the 1983 concert video Mirage Live.

Really looking forward to Brown Eyes too. Last tour without back up singers and backing musicians. Landslide and Don't Stop were not anthems. I listened to Don't Stop and its the faster pace it was played before it became a show closer anthem. Besides her 1984 solo tour this would be the last tour a real piano was played on Don't Stop.

I'm not sure if it has been remastered again, but I just listened to the CD, and the version of "Gypsy" is different from the Mirage Tour video version and the one released on the 2016 Mirage box set. I'm wondering if they mistakenly included the version from October 21 (if the dates on the release are to be trusted)? This makes me think they did remaster the tracks from both nights at some point, whether back in 2016 or for this latest release..

Also, I'm not sure if it's a remastering or remixing issue, but "Love in Store" also sounds like a different version from the video and the 2016 box. "Gypsy" is definitely a completely different version, and I guess that really stuck out to me as I've watched the video so many times. So at least we get a new version of "Gypsy" (even though I think it is inferior to the Mirage Tour video version).

I didn't notice any other differences, but I'm going to pay closer attention the next time I listen, and maybe even A/B the different releases some more.

Listening to the new release right now (on Spotify); 'Not that funny' clocks in at 9:06, and it is not the original (rather annoying) version that was released in 1983 (on VHS).

On Spotify, these all sound like the video renditions to me:

Not That Funny
I’m So Afraid
Blue Letter
Sisters of the Moon

Vocal tics, solos, and even crowd noises are identical to the video. Even the missing beat on “Sisters of the Moon” is still missing.

Now, I never heard this set on the old laser disc, but I did hear the set when Westwood One aired it in 1982–83. I can’t be sure about mastering, but there’s a clarity here — I hope I’m not imagining. When the CD is actually available, we should be able to look for a remastering credit, if there is one.

These Rhino/Spotify dates are not necessarily trustworthy, I believe. Some of what is dated Oct. 22 is Oct. 21, I think. At least in this case, we are just batting around same-venue dates on two consecutive nights. It isn’t as frustrating.

That has pissed me off, that and the clipped version of NTF, which has John's sick extended bass solo before the drum break.

Rhiannon is different from what was previously released.
So we have so far:
Dreams
Oh Well
Rhiannon
Gypsy
NGBA
Landslide
Sara
You Make Loving Fun

As a Fleetwood Mac fan, you cannot really be disappointed by this release. Vocals have been tightened, the harmonies are very clear, as are Chris's keys. Lindsey's guitars have a sparkle to them, unheard previously.

I'm ecstatic, I wasn't with the Live Rumours release. Let's force them to release the Hollywood Bowl show from 1980 and i'll be content...for now.

So the day has finally come. I wanted to know if it's worth buying the whole album, and this may sound obvious, but since you never know with these Fleetwood Mac releases (and in iTunes the songs in this new album just says “Live at The Forum, Inglewood, CA, 10/21/82”), I needed to ask: are the live songs already included on the 2016 Mirage Deluxe edition, described as “Live at the Forum, Los Angeles, CA, October 21 & 22, 1982,” exactly the same ones on this new album?

From the previous posts it seems some songs are different versions (or mixes), but I reiterate my question anyway. If they are the same, I would buy only the songs not released before (unless the total cost difference wasn't relevant)

I compared both versions of YMLF. The one released in 2016 (Mirage DeLuxe) is the same as the one from the VHS video (from 1983), although remixed/remastered. The instruments are in different places, stereo wise (but we already knew this).

This old version, however, is an edited version of the new released one (which is just over a minute longer).
The 'new' part starts at 1:15, with CM singing the "Don't break the spell..." verse, after which an instrumental break follows. This break has no harmonies or significant solo's.
At 2:14, we're back at the 'original' version, with LB's first guitar solo.

During this era I was a massive Stevie fan. I saw her 3 times in 83 and was in heaven, but she sounds horrible on this recording. Maybe the video offset the vocals, but her voice is in bad shape here and this must be the start of the shouting Stevie. The first 2 songs she is clearly over singing to an embarrassing level. This recording has been remastered and does have some unreleased versions, and generally I relish any new material that gets released, but some of the vocals are horrible. In the past, I enjoyed the rawer live versions, and while the version of Rhiannon on this is messy, it's still kinda cool. Not so much with some of the other simpler tracks like Dreams and Gypsy, which sounds awful vocally. Maybe it will grow on me...

So, I've done a fair bit of listening to this today on Spotify and I have to say - just like I was with the live tracks on the 2016 Mirage Deluxe release, I'm disappointed. We were spoiled with the live stuff they gave us on the Tusk Deluxe release.

The fact that the 2016 release just lifted the same crappy audio from the video release that we'd all heard a million times for the prior 30 years was bad enough but to reuse some of this same audio yet again 8 years later is just laziness.

General comments on what I'm hearing new on this:
-I love some of the songs that feature Christine's keyboard parts more up front - this version of Rhiannon really does that for me. We all talk about the arrangement for the last 35 years missing the guitar solo and being lackluster, but Christine is just as important in making that old arrangement work as Lindsey is. This isn't anything new and certainly something I've noted before but I just felt it stood out to me this time.
-Oh Well should have never left the set. I don't care that he didn't write it, Lindsey does this old tune justice every time I've heard it.
-It's clear why the following tour and every one since featured background singers supplementing the three voices.
-Stevie is a mess here. Landslide is decent, Sara has an edge, but Rhiannon, Gypsy, and Dreams...jfc
-I know it just *works* in the encore spot at the end of a show, but I love the pre-'87 Don't Stop. Christine's piano solo is just perfection.

Unusual, with all that splicing and dicing.

I’d add that the video has a post-performance clavinet added to the audio, even though Christine played no clavinet on the song in live performance. It’s nice to hear YMLF on this newest release without a clavinet on it. It means it’s authentic to the actual concert.

I’m digging the previously unreleased renditions. I can try to start a list:

Don’t Stop
Dreams
Oh Well
Rhiannon
Gypsy
Never Going Back Again
Landslide
Sara
You Make Loving Fun

Here are my thoughts. My opinion is the only one that counts around here anyway. ;)
This is incredible. I am not understanding some criticisms. Have we all bought the same CD? I have not analyzed all the songs yet for a deep dive but here are some thoughts.
I miss this Fleetwood Mac. OMG we never got live harmonies like this ever again. Chris backing Stevie on Dreams is out of this world. Stevie always yielded the LOVE in "players only LOVE you" in Dreams to her back up singers. Chris sings it and its beautiful.
How is anyone saying Stevie's vocals are not good in this concert? She is really good. I love how Dreams and Sara are played a bit faster than what we normally would have got from this band.
No one knows the HBO/VHS Mirage show better than me. I have performed it as various members of the band in my bedroom for many years over and over. Most of these songs are from that show. You can tell by the audience and the singing and playing. For example that woman yells "Yay Christine" right before Love In Store. It was on HBO and its on this CD. Eyes of the World is directly from this show too.
However, I can instantly pick out 2 songs that are from different nights from the HBO/VHS concert. Rhiannon and YMLF. Stevie sings Rhiannon different every night. On this CD she says stuff during this Rhiannon she does not say from the VHS show. She says "Its all the same, nothing ever changes" And then throws in "DOES IT" She does it twice and that is NOT on the VHS show. Her vocals are less fried too. She sounds really good and ends with NOTHING EVER CHANGES, DOES IT? Thats not on the VHS tape.
The music and vocals are different on YMLF. Stevie's back up vocals are different and so is Lindsey's but biggest clue is Lindsey does not yell right before his back ups like he does on HBO. Its also interesting how HBO or the editor of the show edited YMLF to be more like the album version compared to how it was played this tour.
Brown Eyes and Sara and Oh Well are spectacular. Stevie hits her high note in Sara too!
Gypsy is from another night to than the HBO show too. Vocals clearly different.

Betamax was before VHS(wasn't it?). And I still have it, somewhere. I'd never throw away anything FM related.
I did regret giving away all my FM 8-tracks, decades ago. I found a Rumours 8-track in a thrift store a couple years ago, so at least I got that back. My Tusk tour book was ruined(glued together) in a flood 3 years ago, but I still have it.

I watched the Brazilian dvd of Mirage last Sunday night(with a bottle of red, and a couple other party favors). I WISH I had a counter for how many times I've watched it. I mean, these days, it's like maybe 4 times a year. But back in the day? Like 4 times a week.

My treasure was recording it from HBO with a bloody tape recorder at 2am on a school night. It was the last night HBO was airing it and I set the alarm and held the tape recorder to the TV for the entire concert. Picture it. February 1983!

Betamax was introduced in 1975,VHS in 1976, and by 1980, VHS had won the war. It's believed that one big reason VHS won is that there was more porn on VHS. Seriously. It's in the article.

I keep playing Gypsy. I love it. I had the other one down to a science. This one is new and unpredictable and I love it! The piano on Hold Me should have been sharper and more prominent like it was on Sara. The guitar drowns out the piano on most of Hold Me and I think it would have sounded better live if it had been more piano heavy. Also they should have sang “hold me hold meeEEEE” instead of “hold me hold me yeah”

Dreams
Oh Well
Rhiannon
Gypsy
Never Going Back Again
Landslide
Sara

Hold Me

That's an impressive majority of the set available for the first time. Not bad, Rhino. Thank you and keep up the good work. Venture a little further afield than the old video releases (as you did with the AUG 29 1977 Forum CD). We know you have full sets from these gigs because we have individual cuts:

MAY 18, 1977 Oklahoma City
MAY 19, 1977 Tulsa
MAY 20, 1977 Little Rock
MAY 21, 1977 Nashville
MAY 24, 1977 Columbia SC

NOV 5, 1979 St Louis
MAY 20, 1980 Cleveland
JUNE 20, 1980 London
JUNE 21, 1980 London
JUNE 22, 1980 London
JUNE 26, 1980 London
JUNE 27, 1980 London
AUG 21, 1980 Omaha
AUG 23, 1980 Kansas City
AUG 24, 1980 Kansas City
AUG 28, 1980 Tucson

I had no idea we had cuts from a total of five nights at Wembley in 1980! Sounds like a full Wembley show should be in the works. (That isn’t counting the 1975 show highlights we got on the white album deluxe or the first round of the 1980 Live album.)

This version of Sara is killer. They're running through that song at quite the clip, rivaling some of the '80 performances on the Tusk tour. Vocally it's a little rougher, but somehow it works.

It's not you. The brits are fantastic musicians. I can now see how much heavy lifting Christine did on piano, and Mick on drums. John's bass is an absolute anchor.

Even if you go back to the opening track Get Like You Used To Be, (FM Deluxe). It's astounding how fast they are going. No wonder her wrists were sore.

I now see what they meant when they wondered how to continue live without Christine McVie. She's so rooted in the foundation of what they do.

Mick too. his idiosyncrasy(s) and fills completely jam and equally go with what they are doing "in the moment".

These recordings show how a song like even "Gypsy" can be incredible. I don't think I'll ever listen to another version of Gypsy again.

Thank you Rhino!!

Ok its just not me. I loved the HBO Gypsy but I like this one more. I cant explain why. Maybe its the quality? Its just gorgeous. Stevie nails all the words and the backing vocals. Seriously. Gypsy was never ever the same live ever again. Sara was never the same ever again. Landslide was never the same again.
I never liked the recorded VHS Rhiannon. It just seemed like a song where Stevie struggled and the song was not living up to previous tours. But this Rhiannon is so much better. Stevie's vocal fry is not as bad as the VHS release version.
The bouncy Don't Stop is a treat. This was before the song became an anthem and was slowed down a bit. Its got this bluesy feel to it as they jam to the end.

He sometimes would scream "Christine MAC!!" before her solo.

It’s strange to hear Don’t Stop at the beginning of the set. Eyes of the World is so amazing live as is Second Hand News. It’s a great collection, it’s like I’m back in Philly in ‘82 seeing them live with Men at Work.

Yep, it was Men At Work in Indy, too. I immediately went out and bought their album.

Literally one of the best nights of my life. 5th row center. Tix were $16!!! There with my best friend, at the height of my fandom. GD, for a time machine!

I am the outlier here... I do not like Stevie's vocals on this at all. have always disliked them. THey're very strained, overly vibrato, and sound possibly tweaked. The band sounds great, but her vocals are just.... already a shadow of their former selves. Gypsy is :sorry:

Wow is Tusk played fast. Have not heard it played this fast in a long time. This is the fastest pace Sara, no? Love it

My Favorite Stevie vocals are 1980 to pre Wild Heart tour 1983 so this is icing on the cake for me. Much more vibrato than the 70s but not cracked and coked out raspy that started in parts of the Wild Heart tour. Good grief she's still hitting the highest of high notes on Sara.

But one funny part is Stevie's goat like sound in Tusk

These were the days of arena rock where the song on the record always had a different take live in concert. When the Dance came out technology existed to make songs sound more studio like. Besides all the extra musicians the songs slowed in concert making them more like the album version. I think for so many years this became the norm of what we heard. IMHO its why this CD is throwing me for a loop. Parts of me are like......whoa slow down a bit. But I love every minute of it. Even Hold Me is pretty fast paced compared to the Buck/Vie version. But I love this Landslide and how its like the energizer bunny compared to when it became the sing along. I think we forgot THIS was Fleetwood Mac in concert.

Tidbit:

Stevie dedicates “Landslide” to Claire (Claire Rothman was the general manager of the Forum for many years).

When Stevie played the Forum several years later on July 18, 1986, she dedicated “Beauty and the Beast” to Claire. I think Claire is still alive — 94 or 95 years old, living in Las Vegas. She is known for dropping the F-bomb quite frequently in conversation, but she was a genuine pioneer as a Jewish woman running the Forum empire and keeping the Lakers afloat (the first woman to run a major sports arena). In some ways, she was a lot like Stevie’s dad as a business leader. She served on the board at City of Hope when the Fleetwood Mac family was involved.

It totally sucks when songs become the sing-a-long. It happened to several Tom Petty songs in his last decade of touring. I really don't have any desire to see Billy Joel any longer because half of his set has become sing-a-long anthems. It distracts from the song and the performance. It becomes more about the crowd than it does the song.

I still think it would have been incredible for Fleetwood Mac to do When I See You Again instead of Landslide, somewhere between '13-'15.

She actually says so in the dedication. It just made me laugh because I wasn't expecting it. Sort of "out of left field"

FINAL THOUGHTS

I've got to listen to the CD for several days on my Bose player. As I mentioned earlier, I liked this much more than I thought I would. My gosh the band was so good back then. I love the Rumours tour and the Tusk tour their playing was really good too. But Mirage they are keeping up with those earlier tours. It's interesting that because Chris had 2 singles off Mirage she chose not to do any of her songs off the White Album where she also had 2 singles. Stevie and Lindsey both do 2 songs off that album. They perform 3 songs from the "infamous" Tusk (that is how Lindsey calls the album on this tour). However Chris chose not to do her single but goes for her deep cut Brown Eyes. The 1980 Live album was always one of my favorites. Which do you like better? I have asked myself that question. I like that this CD is pretty much just two shows combined into one. We get the full set. That is what I miss from the 1980 live album. Its more sporadic with songs from all over the years and different tours. Its tough to answer but I will say both collections compliment each other. My criticism of the 1980 album was no The Chain and Sisters. This collection has BOTH plus Songbird. The 1980 album has incredible live tracks that I dont think could ever be duplicated again.
This tour the setlist just reminds everyone of the greatness of Rumours. The first 4 songs are from Rumours. There are 7 songs from Rumours in the set. I LOVE the fact that Oh Well was performed on this tour. Lindsey does it even better than Peter. He does it far better than Mike Campbell too.
When this collection was announced myself and others on this board figured it was going to be a rehash. But maybe it turned out they actually got it right this time and picked the best songs from each night to make the collection. Maybe thought actually went into this.

Second Hand News - This is fantastic. The only other Mirage version I heard was the US Festival which is all messed up. The band is high and drunk and the mix is all screwed up. This is a polished gem. A fantastic version especially to have on a professional mix CD

The Chain - I have heard this version 100 million times from VHS tape, HBO, TV specials, MTV, personal recordings, and MTV. It still is one of the best versions out there.

Don't Stop - probably the last live version before it became anthem and slowed down a bit. Completely different style of playing back then and I found it so refreshing. A real piano and it actually gets funky and bluesy in the end

Dreams - This is my least favorite song on the 1980 live album. The 1977 Paris sound check does not do it for me. I love this version. I finally found a live version of Dreams that I like.

Oh Well - Lindsey does it better than anyone. Love it

Rhiannon - This was one of my least favorite songs on the VHS Mirage show. Her voice was fried and it just does not sync. This version is so much better. The only thing I miss is the second verse Chris backs Stevie much more on the VHS show. But I think it was because Stevie was struggling. I also love that intro that was cut from the show that is now included. A huge improvement IMHO from the other Rhiannon

Brown Eyes - Chris obviously loved this song and it would be hard to do in concert because its so mood related. But the song carries in concert. Its a confident version and it works really well. In 1987 I did not think the song worked well in concert but this version is fantastic. THANK YOU Chris for putting this in the set so we got this on CD.

Eyes of the World - directly from the HBO show. Love to have a Lindsey Mirage song live on CD

Gypsy - I fell in love with this version. I never thought I would like a version without the do do do do do do because the HBO version set the standard. But this version is now my favorite. Her bridge is better on the HBO version but I like this version better overall

Love in Store - A gem from Mirage this version directly from the HBO show

Not That Funny - directly from Mirage but edited, no?

Never Going Back Again - I love it. He does it like the Tusk tours and I never heard a Mirage version so this was special to hear it

Landslide - beautiful. The 1980 version is very fragile. This one is more confident and its one of my favorite versions ever especially to what this song has turned into live in recent years. Yay Chris on the solo!!!

Tusk - directly from the HBO show with Stevie's goat "Baaaaahhhhhh" Its played faster and I like it!!!!

Sara - LOVE THIS. A full untouched version unlike the 1980 album. She still can hit those high notes here. Another real piano. Its a faster tempo too.

Hold Me - this rocks. Its fantastic. How in the world did they not include this on HBO

You Make Loving Fun - so the Mac did play this version on the Mirage tour. The HBO song is highly edited both visually and audio

I'm So Afraid - great version but directly from HBO

Go Your Own Way - love it but its the HBO version

Sisters - wonderful speaking in tongues version but its the HBO version

Songbird - what a freaking treat to finally have a professional live release of Songbird

Can you imagine if this was release on the heals of the Dance? A real lost opportunity. But we must be thankful it finally showed up. My highlights are: Second Hand News, Dont Stop, Oh Well, Brown Eyes, Gypsy, Landslide, and Hold Me.

Not That Funny - directly from Mirage but edited, no?I was listening for the edit but couldn’t find it. Somebody help.

Never Going Back Again - I love it. He does it like the Tusk tours and I never heard a Mirage version so this was special to hear it Denver? Memphis? Oakland? I linked to Oakland in another thread.

Tusk - directly from the HBO show with Stevie's goat "Baaaaahhhhhh" Its played faster and I like it!!!!Mirage tour was the fastest they’ve ever played it. It just cascaded out like Formula 1.

You Make Loving Fun - so the Mac did play this version on the Mirage tour. The HBO song is highly edited both visually and audioIt’s great to have the song without the rather tacky clavinet added in post-production.

I'm So Afraid - great version but directly from HBO It’s no serious dent in the momentum, but Lindsey and Mick doing the time-in is edited out here. That bit got wild in 1980. On the Mobile Alabama recording, you can hear Lindsey rather cruelly push Mick into a false start. It makes for fascinating listening.

Not a reliable way to compare, Villavic. The magnetic tape moves at an ever-so-slightly different speed on a VHS. Digital speeds, too, can be modified for production reasons (they need more storage room on the CD, they artificially speed up what feels like a too-slow performance, and so on). Also, the track time on different editions will differ when the production team decides to lop off a little more or a little less audience applause or other negative space.

However, based on what you’re saying, I’ll listen more closely to the drum solo.

Tape speed isn't really the issue here. The HBO/Forum 1982 version of 'Not that funny' has been released in three versions:

1 - The original VHS version from 1983 [10:43]
2 - The heavily edited 1992 version on '25 Years - The Chain' [7:47]
3 - The less edited versions from 2016 (Mirage Deluxe) and 2024 (Mirage Tour '82) [8:54]

(Times are without audience noise/applause and so on)

After having this CD for some time now, I will say this is probably my favorite version of Landslide. It has a little 70s magic sprinkled with a raspy Stevie early 80s. Has the Chris keyboard solo and is played at a faster speed that it is today. It hits that sweet spot for me. Besides the BTM version which was full of klonopin and without Lindsey, THIS was the last time it really shined without being a sing along. There is unpredictability in her voice which makes it exciting IMHO.

Its all so good. I still can't believe after all these decades that I have a professionally recorded commercially issued CD live songs from 1982 that include Brown Eyes, Oh Well, Sara, Hold Me, Landslide and all the rest. Makes you wonder WHY they waited so long to do this. I bet this CD collection would have even charted if it was released during the Dance. Many of the reissues or deluxe releases are meh or not that special, this is a must for any Mac fan for their collection. Its so magical for so many reasons. It was the last tour before solo careers took over. It was the last tour without backing musicians and back up singers. It was the last tour before members left and then would rebound many years later. It was the last tour promoting a #1 studio album and being MTV darlings. IT'S SO DAMN GOOD

By 1982, one might say Fleetwood Mac was past its prime. Its best recorded material, bookended by 1975’s self-titled album and 1979’s Tusk, was already behind it. The age of ‘70s excess was passed and a new musical era was dawning. The group’s 1982 album, Mirage, was something of a return after the experimental Tusk; however, it was also to some degree a paler imitation of past album glories.

Mirage Tour ‘82 captures the band live promoting their latest album, rendered here in a three-LP set taken from two nights at The Forum in Inglewood, CA. First off, 12 of the tracks here were part of the 2016 Mirage (Deluxe Edition) release, and an additional three were previously released on the Fleetwood Mac Live (Deluxe Edition) from 2021. But six additional tracks (“Don’t Stop,” “Dreams,” “Oh Well,” Never Going Back Again,” Landslide,” and “Sara,” if you’re keeping track) are original to this set. And apart from the quality of these six unique tracks, all part and parcel of the Fleetwood Mac 1982 live experience presented here, the whole show as presented is a terrific document of a band that sounds intent on proving its best days were in fact not behind it.

The set begins with fun harmony-laced interplay between Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham on the opener, “Second Hand News,” and continues with Buckingham sounding at his most unhinged on a fiery version of “The Chain.” “Don’t Stop” sounds played out, which I suppose it was, and “Dreams” sounds uninspired, which again I suppose by 1982 it was. But by the time the show really gets moving though, things pick up nicely.

Buckingham plays the heck out of “Oh Well.” Christine McVie’s “Brown Eyes” stands out for its detached cool. Buckingham’s terrifically jumpy, yelp-filled “Not That Funny” also features some nice sputtering bass work by John McVie. A slowed down “Never Going Back Again” highlights Buckingham’s fingerpicked guitar. “Landslide” is sublime perfection, and “I’m So Afraid” is a highlight for its slow-burn intensity.

By the time Mirage Tour ‘82 closes with the trio of “Blue Letter,” “Sisters of the Moon,” and McVie’s gem “Songbird,” it’s clear that, despite Fleetwood Mac’s best recorded material being in the rearview, its live show was still a juggernaut. (www.rhino.com)

I focused my comment in the studio albums opinion. I do think Mirage is a good album and I like it a lot, but I think the songwriters' interest (specially Lindsey and Stevie) in further promoting their solo careers avoided them from including other songs that could have made the album a much better piece of work. Though pale imitation was an excessive criticism.

And the fact that the tour lasted so little time is a clue that the conflicts and nightmares that existed from the previous decade now weigh more than the interest in being a magical and extraordinary band that gives us its state of the art.

not sure I agree that it's "bad".... but I do agree it's a throwaway, filler song

There was a time that I liked it. But, I think I liked every single thing they did for a few moments. I could never get my head around this one in the context of the rest of the album. I sometimes don't skip it, but it's painful.
It does have that Everly Bros. thing, but I just think he could have given a much better song for them to work out.

Yes. Too bad Stevie was not given 4 songs for this album. Smile At You was brilliant and exactly what the album needed. However not a chance with Bella Donna still high on the charts they would mix things up. People before Bella Donna said Stevie was the lead singer of Fleetwood Mac but after Fleetwood Mac made that even more painful for the band. Its interesting that the video for Gypsy was filmed before Hold Me. Even if the record company or the band thought it should be the first single, Stevie's solo music was still on the chart so no way that was going to happen.
There is nothing I hate on Mirage. But its a bit safe. Smile At You is not safe and should have made the album. Its Mirage take is by far the best version of that song.

Agreed. But I don't see Mirage as safe. Hold Me sounds like nothing from that time. Gypsy is a safe hit (that I agree). But as an album, it was really an odd listen at first. Especially, with weird things like Eyes, Empire, Book, and of course. oh whoa HO Diane.

I think Lindsey calls it safe because the EQ's were set to normal production levels. and it wasn't recorded while he was laying naked in his bathroom shaving his privates rehearsing for the LIVE Not That Funny, screams and all.

I was cleaning the house today and always put in a CD. I played the hell out of this Mirage CD when I got it over a year ago. But its been about 6 months since I have played any songs. Dear Lord is this good. THIS was Fleetwood Mac. Please bring back all the cocaine because they were on fire. This is how they played. Every song is so fast and is so sharp. They explode out of the gate with 4 Rumours songs. Don't stop is the 3rd song and is some honky tonk faster version on a freaking real piano. The 1980 Live album was always a top 5 favorite. I will always love the tracks from the Rumours tour and some incredible Tusk cuts too. But having the entire set of both LA shows really makes this magic. The band just briefly slows down for a very impactful Brown Eyes and then goes right back to full throttle. The voices are incredible too. Chris on the Chain like she has never sung before. It gives the song such power. Stevie still hitting high notes in Sara. The best Landslide and NGBA too. Sorry for bumping this thread but this reminds me why I never pick up and play The Dance. It also reminds me why I felt disappointed by The Dance. While I loved that Lindsey was back and the band reunited the sound was nothing like the 70s and early 80s. This is catching lightening in a bottle. Why the hell it took them this long to put this out is a crime. No back up musicians. No back up singers yet its flawless and the music is so much better than any concert since.

And lately Mirage Live and the Rumours Live 77 are my fave to listen while cleaning.

I have to agree with you. I've always felt that had "Goodbye Angel" been used in place of "Oh Diane" the album would have been even better...a classic, perhaps!

I have a question about "I'm So Afraid": For the live 1982 version Stevie leaves the stage and Christine sings the backing vocal.

Who sings the backing vocal on the studio version (link below to the vocals only)?: Stevie, Christine, or both of them (see for example 1:57, 2:09, etc.)?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzJWGRNCxO8

I have long felt Lindsey mischaracterizes Mirage as devoid of experimentation. It doesn't have anything akin to "That's All For Everyone." But there is plenty of weird stuff whizzing around in the background of "Eyes Of The World" that would never be on Rumours.

I've also felt he mischaracterizes the actual choices available to the band given the material it had on hand in 1978-79. He presents the situation as one where he heroically forgoes the option, but the truth is the band didn't have the material to make a Rumours II even if it had wanted to. What songs in the mold of, and with the potential commercial appeal of, "Don't Stop" "Dreams" and "Go Your Own Way" did Lindsey pass on or make weird? Lindsey presents the situation as one of choosing artistic integrity at the expense of album sales. But I don't see that set of material–however produced or presented–generating more album sales than it did.

There are definitely production elements on most of the songs on Mirage that are akin to Tusk. Hold Me is probably the one song that has a perfect balance between the Rumours "feel" and the Tusk "feel".

The claims of Mirage lacking experimentation don't really hold up. "Eyes of the World" and "Empire State" could have fit in perfectly on Law and Order, which is generally seen as an experimental album. Even more conventional songs on the album like "That's Alright" have unusual production elements, particularly in the keyboard drones during the chorus, the jaw harp sounds effects, and the metallic percussion.

As for the idea of Tusk not conceivably having the available material to make a Rumours II, that's partially because Lindsey went out of his way to write songs that completely deviated from the material found on Rumours. With some tidying, "Save Me a Place" and "I Know I'm Not Wrong" could have been crafted to fit on a more conventional follow-up to Rumours and Lindsey was demonstrably capable of writing poppier material, as evident by "Monday Morning", "Second Hand News", and later
"Trouble".

Hard to identify.I could even say it's any of them. Even Lindsey with his "voice sampled through a variable-speed oscillator", similar to Big Love, as Mick described.

Wikipedia page list the personnel and Chris is just keyboards. Stevie is the backing vocal, but how reliable is the source, I don't know. There is no reference mentioned in that segment.

She is the right backing singer for "I'm So Afraid." She has more bite and darkness in her vocal than does Christine. And yet in the Mirage live video she leaves it to Christine to sing backing vocal.

Stevie did not sing back up on I'm So Afraid on the Tusk tour either. I hear Chris on the Tusk tour versions too. But definitely on their first 2 tours together Stevie did sing back up with Lindsey on ISA. I think it's because even though its not on the Buck/Nicks album its sort of a Buck/Nicks song Lindsey was working on during that time.
In Largo on the Wild Heart tour she said she was off stage with Fleetwood Mac for 8 songs and could "do whatever she wanted to do." Gee isn't that nice. She says it like she goes out shopping for shoes during Not That Funny or something. But we know she was shoving copious amounts of blow up her nose.
My theory is that ISA is a Lindsey show piece. I think Stevie and the band could sense her onstage presence was a distraction to Lindsey and the fans during his showpiece. That's a long time to be on stage shaking a tambourine dancing for only one small backing vocal on the second verse. It would be so awkward and can understand why Chris took over.
Its not the first time the Mac has mixed things up in concert. In 1987 during GYOW Stevie was added to the second verse. Maybe without Lindsey they tried to put a Stevie stamp on the song. It really surprised me that when Lindsey came back in 1997 that they continued this tradition, and it went on with OWTS and the 2018 tour.

I take everyone's points about Stevie not singing the backing vocal in 1980 either, and perhaps Christine being perfectly suited to the part – for a change of pace if nothing else. I still say Stevie's lower and darker voice fits the song better.

I couldn't disagree more. Christine's backing vocals on the live track give me goosebumps, (she enhances the angst of the song). I don't like Stevie's on this at all. She just bellows and sounds ... well like a goat. She gives me angst, but it's because of her tone quality on this song, not the actually lyrics of, "Slip and I'll fall and I'll die."

I prefer her on Oh Daddy, which she shined. Wish they hadn't taken her that off that song.

Despite the dozens of klonopins she may have had in her brain, I like her Stand Back live in the 1987 concert video. She sings great that last long Why don't you taaaaaake me home, and I like the final line even more (lyrics I can't quite understand) much more than the simple "Stand Back!" with which she ended the later tours.

Although I've read several times theories about that concert audio was overdubbed. Anyway it must be with an audio from that year.

The high vocal part on the chorus is an essential part of “I’m So Afraid”—at least in its original form. Up through the Mirage tour, FM tried hard to reproduce as much of their original vocal parts as possible, not always successfully. By 1982, Stevie couldn’t reach those notes in ISA. Christine’s high harmonies lend a mysterious, haunting dimension to the song that differs from Stevie’s but is as good. Flash forward to 2013 and it happens again with a neutered Sisters Of The Moon. FM had a knack for dusting off some of their most intense songs and finding a way to remove all of their spunk.

As for Sisters, I rather enjoyed it in 2013 and in no way expected it to be anything like it was in 1982. They could’ve played a similar arrangement to 1982 but Stevie’s inability to sing or perform it like she did 30 years prior would’ve made it quite a disaster. I didn’t think it was awful in 2013 and given its place in the middle of the set (vs final encore like it was in the 1979-82 days) it was serviceable. I also think it got better in 2014 when Chris was back and started adding little things with the keys.
