I really do love of all of Christine McVie’s songs but my least favorite song of hers is probably this track. Does anyone feel the opposite?

Did Warner Brothers have plans to release a radio single from the 1980 "Fleetwood Mac Live" album? If so, would it have been "One More Night"?

Most live albums released in that day included a single release. I'm surprised this one didn't.

I would have agreed with you until I heard the demo. That version is to my way of thinking WAYYYYYYYYYY better than the one that ended up on Fleetwood Mac Live.

It's everything I ever wanted from a Christine solo album, just her at the piano. The kind of tune you might find on a Laura Nyro album.

It was always one of my least favorites. But many moons ago it grew on me. The way she is throwing her voice is rare for her and I love it. Its a very sincere song too.
She does not like sleeping alone ;)

I do like the song. I wouldn't say opposite cause it's not within my top fave list, but I enjoy listening it.

And yes the demo version aleuzzi shared here is beatiful.

It's funny how we all have different tastes. I've read in this forum many people like Only Over You. Well I like One More Night far more than OOY.

Not necessarily her best. But it’s nice. Yes, it plods a bit, but so too, there are certain parts that give me shivers.
She never goes below a 6/10.

I would have assumed Fireflies.

Fireflies was released as a single. I've still got the 45. It went nowhere.
The other single was Farmer's Daughter. That didn't chart well either.

maybe Chris and Stevie got new songs tacked onto the Live album since Lindsey hogged most of Tusk??

I still have my 45s. I might have that in there. I'll check later.

Lindsey's songs were half as long as Chris and Goatsy's.

As an individual songwriter, Christine got the least space. One thing I dislike about Tusk is that we wait what feels like an eternity between Think About Me and Brown Eyes. An additional song should have appeared on side two.

I agree with this. Mirage and Tango changed that a bit. Her Tusk songs seem buried.

I always felt that Lindsey didn't know what he had until Tango. By that time, he was leaving.

Okay, I just went through my 45s. No Fireflies. Here's the poop.
Rhiannon/Sugar Daddy
Think About Me/Save Me A Place
Edge of 17/Live Edge of 17
John Stewart Gold

That's all the FM 45s I've got. I always bought the albums the day they were released, so why would I buy 45s?

And unrelated, I don't remember being a Bee Gees fan, but f*ck me, I've got like 20 of their 45s. In my defense, I think some of them may have been my older cousin's, who lived with us when she was in high school. That must be it, because I've always been annoyed by falsetto singers.

My favorite part of this song is the bridge or middle eight… “You may come home one morning and find she’s not sleeping alone…” The rise of the piano chords there against the melody is gorgeous.

The demo is great but I like that the released version repeats this bit a second time, “If you want her, better get her now…”

I think what would have made this track better would have been having Stevie and Lindsey’s background vocals more prominent. Their harmonies during this period was so amazing.

Just this morning it's been 4 times I've heard the demo so far. I'm falling in love with this version.

I wonder where and when this demo was recorded. First thought it was during Tusk sessions, since the Live album was released just finishing the tour. But in that case why they didn't include in the Deluxe or Expanded releases.

And her voice sounds so young it makes me think it was recorder years before.

It’s not a demo. The band played this live at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Details are sketchy. They did a couple of days at the venue on Sept. 3 and 4, 1980, just a few days after their final night of the tour. Lord knows why they did these two extra days — “for crew and friends,” the album says, though why the crew needed to hear the band play two more times after being on the road with them for a year, only the crew could say. So they played these two “shows” or whatever they were, recording “One More Night,” “Fireflies,” and “Farmer’s Daughter” several times, and I don’t know whether they played a full set or an evening full of blues or showtunes or what. Maybe the plan was to film something for TV or prepare a live album (at the time, the plan was to release the show on Sept. 1 as a two-LP live album). Maybe the plan was to add post-production to the very raw live tracks, like “Sara” and “Over and Over.”

The guy to ask would be Biff Dawes, who recorded the two days. He may be on Instagram or FB.

the vocal on Fireflies is an overdub. Lindsey did a guide vocal with the band, and she recorded over it.

I thought I could find the LB only one easily but still searching my files. Might be on my old computer. Here is a version with Stevie and Lindsey both doing lead, with Stevie dubs. Pieces of this version made it to the final mix. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPhedT6lHzY

Does the Fleetwood Mac Live album from 1980 have overdubbed studio vocals added? Some of the "live" versions on the album sound a little too sharp, crisp, and clean. The background vocals on "Sara" and "Dreams" are near perfect - and the band didn't sound exactly like this in concert.

If so - when were these overdubs and studio vocal work completed?
It seems the band quickly rushed off to various solo projects at the conclusion of the Tusk tour in 1980.

That's why I didn't find it. At the release moment I had checked digital editions of Live Deluxe (I still have iTunes :o ) and only included a Fireflies long version remix. But now I can find this OMN version, not in the Deluxe Live edition but in a "Demos Singles" album, that only have Fireflies and One More Night demos.

Good to know. I'm old, old school and usually don't purchase digital downloads unless I can't find it any other way. I've never liked iTunes because they put everything in their own format and claim that they still own the music even though you have purchased it. I guess Amazon does the same thing now too.

The Live album is full of mysteries. Some songs overdubbed while they include a version of Don't Stop where Lindsey breaks a string at the end? That was the best version of Don't Stop they had? Also many of the dates are wrong where the songs were recorded. Many of the songs like Rhiannon were from the Rumours tour. I can see why they included them because its the best version but why not include the real recorded date and location? Wasn't Don't Let Me Down again from the 1975 tour?

I prefer the live album version of One More Lonely Night. I get that small venue vibe almost like she's singing at a piano bar. The rawness of the live song adds more depth IMHO. However I would have scrapped it along with Farmers Daughter and Fireflies for The Chain and a Tusk Sisters.

The Live album is full of mysteries.

Yes, the mystery is HOW they decided the track listing. Though not so mysterious is WHO. According to Mick he was the only one who at the end of Tusk tour he "strongly felt there had to be a live document of the band at this point". And "both John McVie and Lindsey Buckingham thought it was a negative move". So probably he was the one who together with the record company(?) define the track listing. Probably he wanted to show it as a last tour product, so they described the songs with Tusk tour datyes, but to me it's a mystery why they included sound check or rehearsal tracks, and how the rest of the band participated in the final decision knowing some data was false.

While I do think that Mick is a card carrying IDIOT, Live is the one thing on which I agree with him. I'll never forget buying it at K-Mart, the day it was released, and ripping the cellophane wrapper off of those dual 8-tracks on the way to the car, and shoving it into the player!

I dont think the tracking is mysterious. The band opened with Monday Morning on the Rumours tour and with Say You Love me on another leg. So IMHO we get both openers to open the album.
Why they included a barely audible Landslide always interested me. It is a good eclectic mix of the band when they were at their best 1977 to 1980. I love it because it showcases the band as a rock band which the band shifted gears for Tusk. They did not include the Tusk singles except for Sara is another oddity. I think most would like Think About Me over Not That Funny. I am thankful Lindsey's cover of Oh Well was captured and released. IMHO its the best version. I think everyone was stoned and did not care that in 25 years the internet would be invented and people found out what they alleged to be recorded when and where was not true. Over My Head is another song from the Rumours or earlier tour. It was never performed on the Tusk tour.

Do we know how/why Fireflies, One More Night, and Farmers Daughter came about? Were they working on new songs while on tour? I didn't think they workshopped a lot of material during soundchecks etc. It was always a head scratcher to me that they were coming off such a commercially successful era of touring (Rumours & Tusk) yet they put 3 completely unknown tracks onto a live album. Were they trying to come up with some sort of single to promote it with? Why were they at the Santa Monica Civic Aud for two days directly after the tour closer at the Hollywood Bowl? Were they trying to re-record some vocals in a live setting instead of a studio? Is it possible they briefly contemplated putting together a studio album of material to recoup their losses from the mismanagement of the Tusk Tour? SO. MANY. QUESTIONS!

I think it was just to make the “Live” album that was only technically pulling from only 3 studio albums a bit more interesting to add some new tracks to make it more marketable.

Back in the day there was an industry magazine called Ice Magazine and I read an article about the album. It's been a while, but I though it said that they recorded all shows on the Tusk tour to pulled songs for a live album. I haven't seen any evidence of soundboard recording of all shows from the tour, but who knows maybe there are still some in the vault somewhere. Knowing Lindsey he wouldn't want to release an album without some new material. I think that was the industry standard then even though done of those live tracks had been released before. I've tried looking online for that article, but haven't found it yet.

Back then I usually kept up with release dates and bought albums on the date they were released, but it seems that I remember walking into a Record Bar in the mall and saw the Live album already on the shelf. It hadn't been released more than a few days, but I was pleasantly surprised and excitied. Seems like it was around the holidays. The Live album has always been one of my favorites. At that time you had to rely on bootlegs or a few of the radio shows to hear live performances.I think it's perfect exactly the way it is even though people on here tear it apart and complaint about everything. :wavey:

The Live album got virually no promotion, so it no wonder it didn't do any better. I guess they weren't expecting much. Plus, they were burned out from the tour and I'm sure didn't want to go back to work, especially after the management shakeup.

If this Wikipedia article is to be believed, they recorded over 400 shows between 75-79. That would tie in with all the Tusk shows being recorded. It's a shame we haven't gotten a whole uneidted Tusk show. The extra live disc they included with the Live reisssue is awesome, and it doesn't appear to have any overdubs, but it is created from different shows. We should get a petition going for them to release them all even digitally!

I haven't listened to "One More Night" in 15 years. Probably more. But I gave the demo a shot, and it's lovely. None of the shrill, whiny vocals on the released version. I can't quite articulate the thought, but there's something about her vocal delivery that reminds me of a Stevie demo. But with better piano playing.

The album was released on December 8, the day Lennon was murdered. Not to sound crass, but I think that sunk airplay right out of the gate. I was at the record store on December 8 to buy the album, and the store was playing “A Day in the Life” over and over. Ordinarily, on a Fleetwood Mac release day, you’d walk into a record store and hear it. Radio, too, was naturally and justifiably all over Lennon’s great legacy, and the Mac album was ignored for several days. Only later did I start hearing a couple of things on the album, like “Oh Well” and “Monday Morning” on KMET in Los Angeles. But not much at all, really. The album developed a sort of cut-out bin reputation, even more so than Tusk.

I think it was a rush job but not without strengths. All those barn-burning performances plus some great cover and sleeve art. It had the spirit of Tusk. It just wasn’t what the radio public wanted to hear back then. Fleetwood Mac in concert was for seeing, not for hearing, people thought. Maybe it was the wrong time for a live Mac album. The live albums that had been getting all the airplay, like Journey and Cheap Trick and Jackson Browne, had all been released a few years earlier. Mac was a little late to the table. Live Rust was getting more airplay on KMET in 1980/81 than Mac Live even when the former was already a few years old.

~I~ rushed out and bought it the day it was released. I love it more than Tango, Time, BTM, and the giant cat turd SYW.

Not sure about the time factor. Supertramp's Paris was released in september '80 and i think it was a success (one of my favorite live albums, by the way). It reached the top ten albums list in several countries, include US Billboard 200 albums (n.8).

Maybe the FM Live release day (coinciding Lennon's death) was an issue but in the long term I guess there were other causes.

This is a pleasant filler track. I prefer the Live version to the demo, but it didn’t seem necessary.

The Live album should have been a lot safer. It drags badly in spots. Put SHN, YMLF, Tusk, Songbird, and The Chain on there.

Its rare that we agree. But I agree with you. I like the demo but the live version gives me solo piano bar sort of vibes. I would not classify her singing as whiny as someone said. She is projecting her voice to emphasize parts of the song. I find it raw and can feel her emotion on the live track and not so much the studio track/demo.
But I would have axed all 3 new songs along with Not That Funny for Sisters, The Chain and Songbird.

And that's what I was thinking about, when I said the track listing was a mystery to me. Several missing.

I doubt the entire tour was recorded. I’m betting the truth lies somewhere between what Ken and Richard always said - they would go out for about two weeks and record. We definitely know they recorded shows in both ‘79 and ‘80 both state side and abroad. I would be really curious to know how many Tusk tour tapes they have.

I agree, if they had so many tapes to pull from it’s odd that they didn’t follow the setlist from the tour and wind up with their own version of Frampton Comes Alive.

Then again, it’s equally as puzzling that there hasn’t been a re-release of The Dance with the full set including Gypsy etc.

I'll never understand why The Chain wasn't included.

The radio was playing Dreams (live) a lot. I remember that much.

Dreams is an interesting timestamp. It was recorded at the Paris soundcheck in 1977. It was recorded before Dreams was a hit and was literally just released as a single. Does it not seem Stevie is really trying to sell the song with her vocals? I never cared for this live version of Dreams for this annoyance. Maybe its my imagination but once the song became a big hit she did not over sing it like this.

The recording of The Chain in Paris (1977) is really good and would have shined on LIVE.

The version they have on the Tusk Deluxe is fantastic. Which album is the Paris 1977 published? Is it on a deluxe. (I know I've heard it, just can't remember if they parked that somewhere.)

I don't think she's 'oversinging' it at all.

Notably she's still not singing the high notes on "love you" part of the chorus.

I find it annoying on the video for the version on the Live album that there's no shot of Christine at all til about 3 minutes into the video....:distress:

Agree, she's so underwhelming. Like she's bored with the song. The video really is annoying, like many others that Christine is cut out much of. Watch Oh Diane.

That's rare because I thought I was the only one that thought that. She keeps running her vocal range up and down throughout the song, no? Mariah Carey not quite but do you smell what I am cooking?
I thought I was the only one.
But for those that don't hear this or like it would you agree this song is sung differently than almost every other version of the song in concert?

I think it's sung more closely to the recorded version than most others, and certainly way more than the way she's been singing it since like Tusk. I like this version; it's how her voice used to work. I don't think it's showboating at all, I think it was her trying to sound like the recording. She was already losing the high end of her voice by this time and she really lost it during/after Tusk.

Definitely not showboating. When I learned it was from the Rumours soundcheck it sort of explained the reasons for my feelings on the song. Maybe for soundcheck she was testing the mic or trying something new. I just get vibes she's really selling the song. Dreams is a somber song, no? Its sung in a somber way. This version does not have that feel.
But everyone else says its their favorite version of Dreams so clearly its just me ;)

Dreams nor Gypsy really do well live. They have that studio nuance that makes them great tunes.

Having said that, Dreams from the Dance is probably the best one I can handle without wanting to fall asleep.

Speaks to how big a contribution the production in the studio really beefs up and helps carry her songs... Doing them live just can't reproduce all the studio tracks, and when the more basic elements are revealed it shows the limitations of her musical skill (as opposed to her lyrical skill)

The Live album should have been a lot safer. They were of course a huge concert attraction in 1980 (and had the box office receipts to prove it), but people did occasionally walk out that year because of how freakish they played. I remember the couple who walked out at the Bowl because the studio band didn’t sound like the studio band. Those people wanted the studio sound. To make a safer live album, the band would have had to gather a single album’s worth of top hits from the less nutty touring days, 1975 to 1977. Somebody opted to go a little conky with this album, from the song choice to the 1980 jamming to the fainting-spell cover photo and the typewriter font.

It drags badly in spots. Stop it!

Put SHN, YMLF, Tusk, Songbird, and The Chain on there. As the tour progressed, “Tusk” got longer and longer. The performance on the LIVE deluxe, for example, is about eight minutes of that riff played over and over. The performance to grab for a live album should have been the Forum concerts with the USC Trojans. Having the horns around kept the jamming under radio-friendly control.
