Thanks for the article. "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" is essentially a Heartbreakers song with Stevie's voice, although looking at the credits, it appears that Donald Dunn was the bassist as opposed to their primary bassist Ron Blair. Granted, Dunn did play on one Hard Promises song ("You Can Still Change Your Mind"), so it's possible that the Heartbreakers also tracked "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" with Dunn.

Stevie also sang backup vocals on You can still change your mind. There is video footage of her and Tom in the studio working on Stop draggin my heart around. She has the lyrics in her hand and they are facing each other and singing. She asks Tom if in school he had to put dashes and dots in places on the page to know what to put the emphasis on and he said he barely got through school. So at some point they did go into the studio together. There are a lot of stories surrounding this song and how it got made.

Yes, the Heartbreakers recorded the song with Dunn on bass and Iovine slotted in Stevie's vocal later.

1981's Hard Promises is when Ron Blair started missing sessions. That's why Duck Dunn also plays bass on "Woman In Love" (though no, not on "You Can Still Change Your Mind" – see links below), Mike plays bass on "The Waiting," and Tom plays bass on "Something Big."
