Is this just a spin-off of already released material on a deluxe package?

Asking for a friend.

Interesting album cover choice. The word RUMOURS is giant and the band name is so small you can barely see it.

Wow an official release of an entire Rumours Tour show, sweet! Let’s hope a complete Tusk tour show is next.

That cover is embarrassingly lame and phoned in.

Fleetwood Mac was at the top of its game in August 1977 when the band returned to its adopted home in Southern California to play three shows at The Forum in Los Angeles. RUMOURS had only been out a few weeks when the band left in February to tour the world, returning six months later to play three shows at The Forum for nearly 50,000 fans.
RUMOURS LIVE captures the energy and excitement of the band’s opening night at The Forum on August 29, 1977.
The concert’s setlist draws almost exclusively from FLEETWOOD MAC and RUMOURS, the first two albums recorded by the band’s latest incarnation: Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, and Christine McVie, and the newest members, Stevie Nicks, and Lindsey Buckingham. The lone nod to Fleetwood Mac’s other nine studio albums is a performance of “Oh Well,” a rock-guitar masterpiece originally released in 1969 and written by the band’s founder, guitarist Peter Green.
The concert remained unreleased for decades until 2021, when “Gold Dust Woman” from the show was included as a bonus track on LIVE: DELUXE EDITION, Rhino’s expanded version of Fleetwood Mac’s 1980 concert album. The other 17 songs on the collection have never been released before.
Engineer Ken Caillat, who helped record RUMOURS, also recorded the concert at The Forum using the Record Plant’s mobile recording truck. He captured the band’s impassioned performance at a moment of peak RUMOURS frenzy, including powerful versions of “Landslide,” “Never Going Back Again,” “Songbird,” and “The Chain.”

Not totally accurate. The versions of Monday Morning and World Turning both featured on the deluxe Rumours in 2013.

From memory which isn't the greatest anymore, I think they got the date of this show wrong. I was in LA in 1977 on a summer vacation and I remember driving past the Forum as a passenger and someone in the car said FM was performing there at that moment. We had traveled from the east coast and would not have still been there that late into August with school starting just a few days later.

I think this is really cool and long overdue. The Rumours tour was kick ass. I have listend to many shows on youtube that were not even professionally recorded and they sounded so good. Several years ago when Sirius was promoting FM, they had a FM channel and the Gold Dust Woman from the Rumours tour was incredible.
I am surprised at the hate the cover is getting. Thats one of my favorite photos of the band and since its the flip side to Rumours makes all the sense to me.
It could not be a FM live release without a mix up on recording dates. The 1980 Live Album was all mixed up and had wrong dates. The Tusk deluxe issue included a Mirage tour The Chain and claimed it was the Tusk tour. Someone was always marking wrong dates or they dont really care. Maybe both?

That ‘82 Chain stuck out like a SORE THUMB the second I heard the beginning and saw the screen saying Richfield Ohio 1980. Sure 99% of people listening would never know but us Ledgies aren’t going to be fooled by some ‘82 Chain masking itself as an ‘80 Chain!

The best would be songs never heard live on any previous release.

I think you’re in good shape with this, Villavic. Only three songs officially appeared on previous releases: Monday Morning, Gold Dust Woman, and World Turning. Monday Morning and World Turning were on Rumours Deluxe, and Gold Dust Woman was on Live Deluxe. (And I have my doubts about Monday Morning being from the Forum.)

That leaves fifteen songs that haven’t been released already. Pretty good number that ought to please anyone who wants to hear a special Rumours concert.

Mick wrote on his twitter account that the Dreams on this package has never been released before.

Who does not believe Mick? He also wrote these songs were recorded on "opening night" at the Forum. I dont know what that means because the Mac started the Rumours tour much earlier that year and the Forum existed since the 1960s. Yet its opening night? Maybe he means first night in LA on the Rumours tour? Where is Stevie when you need her. We need her expertise on when this was recorded.

Monday Morning will be different, too. The one on the Rumours Deluxe always bothered me — it sounded much earlier than late August. On a lark, I just listened to a bunch of soundboards from May, and sure enough what we were given on the Rumours Deluxe is from Nashville May 21, not Los Angeles. If you want to check, listen to Nashville and pay extra attention to the guitar solo.

To summarize, only Gold Dust Woman and World Turning have been released already from LA, both of which sound legitimately late-August based on everybody’s audience tapes.

I’m all for these live releases (may the Lord grant Rhino the power to continue) but they’re labeled by idiots.

EDIT: By the way, You Make Loving Fun on the LIVE DELUXE is supposed to be from Tulsa (May 19). Is a May 19 tour stop in Tulsa documented anywhere? I see ticket stubs for March 19 in Tulsa. I know a bunch of Rumours shows were postponed because of Stevie losing her voice, so it’s reasonable to think they added Tulsa the day after Oklahoma City.

Bly, at the very least, you should be keeping the soundboards from Paris (April 14), Oklahoma City (May 18), Little Rock (May 20), Nashville (May 21, whence MONDAY MORNING on RUMOURS DELUXE springs), and of course those multiple nights of rehearsal (February 23, 25, 26).

We may yet see more of those released officially . . . we may not.

As is the case with most artists, the record company owns the original master recordings and artists make very little residuals from the masters.

Do the members of Fleetwood Mac profit when Rhino Records repackages and re-releases live recordings. Do they own the live recordings, or are they also property of Warner Brothers Records along with the masters?

Not only is this great news in itself, but it’s also great because of what it probably heralds — more and more old live releases from Rhino. I don’t believe it’s coincidental that Rhino has been releasing all this live Mac over the last ten years or so:

Fourteen cuts on Fleetwood Mac Deluxe (plus four from TV)
Eleven cuts on Rumours Deluxe
Twenty-one cuts on Tusk Deluxe
Fourteen cuts on Live Deluxe
Eighteen songs on Rumours Live at the Forum

I have no idea how many live cuts from pre-1975 albums have been released. But all of this has been such a blessing and such a highlight of otherwise very meagre Fleetwood Mac years.

When I went back to count up everything, Viv, I was amazed at the number: 78 live cuts. And I haven’t counted the pre-1975 stuff because it’s all over the place. How can you beat that? This is better than caring about which Heartbreaker joined which Fleetwood Mac when and whether you could actually hear him play above the nonstop wall of noise from 25 musicians on the back line. The only thing I would have preferred from Rhino is concerts in their entirety — this Forum show is a great start (let’s hope it’s a start). It may not be our actual favorite tour stop, but it immerses you in a single night’s performance with its rising and falling narrative and unified experience. Fleetwood Mac concerts used to tell a good tale, and their live tracks don’t really benefit by being mixed and matched. The legendary live albums in rock and jazz were almost always a single performance.

Next up, Rhino could track down and release a cleaner Trod Nossel 1975 studio/radio set. That’s the obvious follow-up to the White Album deluxe.

I totally agree. It's been a wish for longtime fans for YEARS to see live material from the vaults finally see the light of day. Most of the soundboard material that has leaked over the years have not been directly from the masters, but most likely 2+ generation cassette copies.

I'm really keeping my fingers crossed for some complete Tusk tour shows that haven't been previously released.

Definitely were. The band recorded both nights — the original plan for the live album was to release a Bowl album. The decision to do a compilation must have been made very quickly (like, days). The marketing for the Bowl concerts featured a couple of sunny Los Angeles palm trees. I always imagined a Bowl concert album with the palm trees on the cover. I think I’m tainted with nostalgia bias, but those shows are my favorite Fleetwood memory.

This is what he wrote:

Three days later, in front of a sold-out audience at the Hollywood Bowl, Lindsey leaned into the mike and announced, "This is our last concert... for a long time." I'll never forget Stevie's "Landslide" that night, the way she sang about growing older in her scratchy, uncertain voice. It was an ineffable moment. After the show, we had a classic locker-room victory celebration kisses, hugs, champagne, intense feelings of relief mingled with fatigue. To me it felt like the end of an era. And it indeed turned out to be exactly that.

On another note, I can only wonder what piece of reality Christine would have to share if she were here to be asked about this project. I came to enjoy her down to earth, fresh take on things that usually were romanticized in the press.

You know for the die hard fan that I am I never bought any of these releases. I downloaded cuts from them during their initial releases. But after you wrote this list I went to youtube and listened to the live tracks from each of these that interested me and discovered I never heard that live Rhiannon from the Rumours Tour before and I like it very much.

When I went back to count up everything, Viv, I was amazed at the number: 78 live cuts.

Wow 78 live songs sounds great. But in all that time we've only gotten 3 live Rhiannon's and I need more. In fact I want every live Rhiannon from the Tusk tour from May of 1980 to August of 1980. Rhiannon live is like a drug to me. I can never get enough. Of the 3 Rhiannon's we have I was and still am blown away by the Tuscon version from August 1980. Whosever decision it was to release this is the person I want to know so I can beg him/her for MORE!!

I also want to say that when I originally downloaded The Chain demo by Stevie, it was a snippet and that's all I had for all these years until yesterday when I heard the whole thing. So that Chain demo, that live Rhiannon, that alt. Sable on Blonde from one of Stevie's deluxes and Brown Eyes with Peter Green & Lindsey are my favorite songs from all the deluxes released so far.

Someone who knows more will surely correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think Don’t Stop got a permanent place in the setlist until after the Tusk Tour started. It was definitely played in 1979 but I’m not sure at every show especially early on. It had that early in the set location through Tusk and Mirage and then with Chris’s solo tour and beyond was near the end/encore.

Yeah I think it was typically SYLM/Chain/Don’t Stop/Dreams/Oh Well/Rhiannon with Monday Morning replacing Say You Love Me for those late 1980 shows and Second Hand News during Mirage.

It’s become so “normal” to see Don’t Stop at the end of the night that it is weird to think of it being early on in the show (or not in the set at all!). It’d be like Go Your Own Way being the opener.

Yes, I posted a thread about this many months ago. I was listening to Rumours shows and it was not there. However it was played a few times or at least one leg of the tour. I suspect since Dont Stop was the 4th single, it was not practiced or anticipated to be released when the tour started. Each singer performed their single and another song from Rumours. Chris picked Oh Daddy and YMLF.
It was not until Tusk that the song became a regular in the set. Looking back it is odd since Dont Stop is one of their biggest hits. But I think it also explains the unexpected success of the album. It seems they practiced and were prepared for 3 singles.
Almost similar is Everywhere. It was the 4th single from Tango. When the tour started Little Lies was climbing the charts. When I saw the tour it was not being performed. This is why I think on the Tango Concert video you see them performing it not in front of an audience. It looks like they are trying it out and including it on the video. If my memory is correct, I think at some point they may have added it to the show. However, the US leg of the tour ended in mid December 1987. Everywhere was released one month prior so I think the last weeks of the tour they may have played it.

It sounds great; for some reason, I've particularly been enjoying Blue Letter. And it made me chuckle when John says that the show was over because they hadn't been together very long and didn't know any more songs!

They’re discussing this release over at the Steve Hoffman music forum (https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/fleetwood-mac-rumours-live-8th-september-2023.1179806/).

My set got delivered today, but I’m still at work.

I'm in Vancouver, BC/Canada and listened to it on my AirPod Pros. I biked around Stanley Park with it blasting in my ears.
I'm impressed. And yes, Blue Letter is fantastic. Their virgin voices and harmonies are spot on. Other times, the intonation is all over the place.. but it's still better than what they do now with their 17 back up singers.

This show has (IMO) of the best vocals on a live Songbird I've ever experienced. I wish it was piano only so she would work a little harder and throw a solo in the bridge, but wow, it's very touching and she's truly connected to the lyrics.

Strangely, Dreams is also pretty damn good and didn't bore me.

ISA isn't fully developed yet (it's almost of the Tusk tour quality) still amazing however.

Christine's maracas on Oh Well are fabulous. She even throws in some B3 in the latter part of the song.

YMLF vocally her voice is so pure. She goes sharp vs. flat throughout the show.

Rhiannon is ok. I feel like Christine is trying to sing opera on the harmony and kind of kills that sensation they usually give me.

Stevie's Landslide is the best I've heard live. By Tusk, I can't stand this song because she doesn't breathe correctly and her phrasing kills the sentiment of the beautiful, sublime, gentle studio version.

NGBA!!! Regular speed!! And it has brushes and bass. vs. Tusk where he thinks he's clever and slows it down with that bellowing. (much like his ex on Tusk tour Landslide). It's ok to sing straight tone legato guys!!

The Chain is fantastic as is GYOW. I will say Mirage Forum versions of these songs are superior in intensity. But, not to say they don't nail it here 5 years earlier.

Blue Letter is wonderful. The three voices are a little more balanced than other live versions that I've heard.

Best SYLM that I've heard. Also Over My Head is wonderful.

Correct me if I'm wrong, David O, but we've heard this GDW before. And maybe we've heard the Oh Daddy too? They sound awfully familiar to my fuzzy brain. Anyway, such a treat to hear them raw and not quite full of themselves.
I would like a full concert of 1976, too! Official release, of course.

Interested to hear what you all think. I know Macfan will have a 10 page report.;)

Great breakdown, but—

Those “opera” vocals on Rhiannon are Stevie, not Christine! Christine is singing her straightforward harmony part. Stevie is doing a coke-induced soprano tremolo.

I don’t know why record companies insist on pulling crap like this in the era of google…in the album art they mention playing the forum to nearly 50K people. The forum holds about 18k for concerts LOL. The picture on the inside gatefold is definitely not the forum either if that’s what they were attempting to imply.

I wonder how much of the audience applause has been bolstered or supplemented with canned audience.

Edit: perhaps they meant 50k across three nights.

Thanks for the correction. I was too busy keeping my eyes on the road, (I guess). I'll have to go back and listen. You mean she couldn't get the melody notes correctly on her own song?

I’m currently listening to this set on headphones and it’s amazing. The harmonies are as tight as they ever were live. Christine doesn’t go flat and Stevie is in control of her vocals. Amazing! I wish Stevie was singing with Christine on Oh Daddy and with Lindsey on I’m So Afraid. (Or if that is her it was turned up a bit, but I think it’s Chris)

Folks over an another music forum were saying that this show is a relatively tame show compared to others on the Rumours tour. I've always found a lot of the Rumours shows we have on tape to have similar energy. For me, the Tusk tour has always been easier to evaluate and notice the great nights vs average nights.

I haven’t listened to this all the way through but from my first listen to the first few songs, I have to agree with this. If you hear one Monday Morning, Say You Love Me, Oh Well, etc. from the Rumours Tour, you’ve heard them all. I listened to Oh Well and thought this could be the same as the Live Album. It seems as the Tusk Tour evolved the songs really took on a life of their own. I live Stevie’s 75-76 voice on Rhiannon, but the arrangement/solos/jams really took off in 1979-80. By the end of the 1980 leg it’s just sublime. The Chain and GYOW evolved similarly.

Sonically, this thing sounds very good. The lower end is solid, there’s good clarity, extraneous crowd and electronic noise are mostly under control (the exception seems to be “You Make Loving Fun,” which was the worst-sounding cut on the Live Deluxe last year — there’s something about that arrangement that comes across messily).

A lot of these performances are good, tight Mac with energy, and everyone seems to be in fine voice with leads and harmonies. It may or may not be your favorite Rumours performance — probably not — but I think a few of the tracks stand out for that tour: “Say You Love Me,” “Over My Head,” “World Turning,” “Blue Letter.” What’s so powerful about the set is that it’s a single set and it hangs together like a set. It’s what’s been missing from all the previous groupings of live recordings from different cities. When you listen to this from front to back (or back to front, as Stevie idiotically says), you hear that sensation of coherence in a single night. To me, this is important as a live Mac set because it’s probably the first time we’ve ever heard a professional release in its entirety from a single place and time, except for some radio broadcasts like the Trod Nossel studio concert from 1975 or some pre-1975 stuff. Even the Tusk and Mirage shows released on video were all scrambled and shortened. I really do hope Rhino compiles several more of these things. I wish they could get their hands on a Wild Heart concert — don’t even ask Stevie, just do it — or a Street Angel concert.

There's a guy from Rhino that posts on the Steve Hoffman music forums. He oversaw the reissues for Little Feat. He mentioned there being more projects in the hopper, but it all depended on how well the recent reissues sold. I REALLY hope the same is true for these Fleetwood Mac live releases. The good news is, It looks like this album has sold really well. The vinyl has been in and out of stock at amazon. It would be amazing to see one of those Tusk shows see the light of day in its entirety (Richfield, Omaha, Kansas City, Hollywood Bowl etc)

I'm curious about the Hollywood Bowl tapes. Not a single track has been released via any of the recent reissues/deluxe sets. Either they have been lost, are viewed as being sub-par, or they have them earmarked for a future release and don't want to jump the gun releasing anything.

They’ve been pulling out stuff from random dates all throughout the tour and the Bowl shows if I’m not mistaken we’re originally intended to be the live album, so I’d have to think the tapes are still there just waiting. They released some late August 1980 stuff on the Tusk Deluxe album and while the voices def sound a bit ragged, the band sounds incredible. I had the boot on MP3 years ago and still have it somewhere but I’d love a full Tusk show and one of those final shows would be amazing.

It's such a treat to see/hear all of these pristine recordings be released. For decades soundboard tapes were like folklore to fans. Some recordings were leaked over time, but they were often plagued by tape hiss and just not the greatest quality.

I want a shelf full of these things — well, a decent series of perhaps ten superb shows. I just have no idea what was actually professionally recorded because Ken Caillat and others have contradicted themselves over the years. Wouldn’t it be nice if A REPRESENTATIVE FROM RHINO actually asked us here (or on their website) which particular shows might garner the most interest?

TROD NOSSEL, WALLINGFORD 1975
NEW ORLEANS 1975
PARIS 1977
OSAKA 1977
NEW YORK or PHILLY 1978
LOS ANGELES (WITH TROJANS) 1979
CLEVELAND 1980
LA 1980
DETROIT 1982
IRVINE 1982
CLEVELAND 1987

Not to mention a handful of Nicks solo concerts.

DALLAS 1983
LOS ANGELES 1983
OAKLAND 1983 (the elusive show taped for FM radio but never released)
NEW YORK 1986
LOS ANGELES 1986
LAS VEGAS 1994

Back in my younger days when MP3 sharing was in full effect and I finally had an internet connection that didn’t require a senatorial term to download a song, I used to love discovering these old shows. Melbourne 1980 was an absolute favorite of mine. I haven’t listened in ages but I’m sure I’m hindsight the appeal was the actual recording and the general hissing that prevailed throughout. I also think this is the show with the “this black rose is for all of you who don’t have any energy!” Line from Stevie at the end. I’d love to hear that show in an official capacity!

Not totally accurate. The versions of Monday Morning and World Turning both featured on the deluxe Rumours in 2013.

That may be true, but especially World Turning sounds totally different on this new release. The DeLuxe Rumours version sounds like it was recorded on a cheap type 1 cassette tape, the 'new' version sounds much brighter, instruments are in different places (left/middle/right), and Lindsey sounds years younger. It is obviously a remastered version.
The DeLuxe Monday Morning lacks the instrumental intro, and the guitar solo is totally different; it's more a Christine electric piano solo. The new version has a real guitar solo; I think it is another version than the previously released one.

I hope Rhino can stay afloat with these boutique releases. Most of these things probably don’t sell more than 5,000 copies. Nobody really hears about them, to begin with. Certain bands probably trigger more interest, like Dylan or the Eagles, but I can’t believe that live material from Fleetwood Mac interests anyone beyond a few thousand. I wonder how much it costs Rhino to pull one of these live albums together. Costs include licensing (maybe?), mastering, and printing. Marketing is just a YouTube video — you never see a display ad in Rolling Stone or elsewhere.

Twenty-five dollars times 5,000 copies is . . . $125,000. I dunno. Seems really marginal. Are these labors of love? Maybe Rhino makes it all up in volume of releases with dozens of bands represented.

No, it reached #81 on the Billboard 200. An album can perform very well on the album sales chart but not even appear on the Billboard 200. Lindsey Buckingham's eponymous album reached #13 on the Album Sales chart but didn't even reach the top 200 on the primary album chart.

Help an old man out. Is that because of no airplay?

Particularly beginning in 2018, Billboard began to place a greater emphasis on subscription streaming when factoring chart placements for the Billboard 200 album chart. Around that time, Billboard counted 1,250 streams as one album unit for paid subscription services and 3,750 streams as one album unit for free ad-supported streams. Fleetwood Mac is no slouch when it comes to streaming; several of their songs have been played several hundred million times, and "Dreams" has over a billion streams. However, the streaming numbers for Rumours Live were comparatively more modest.

As more people have moved on to streaming services, the practice of purchasing physical albums has somewhat gone by the wayside. That results in less competition, meaning that an album can perform well on the sales chart even if it only sells a few thousand copies. Given that Fleetwood Mac has several thousand fans who will buy literally anything the band throws at them, it's no surprise that Rumours Live charted relatively high despite only moving roughly 10,000 units. Meanwhile, the original Rumours album actually outperformed Rumours Live by over 40 spots, largely riding on its ridiculous streaming numbers.

That's lower than I might have expected for the UK. Rumours itself is on its mind-boggling 1010th week on the chart at #22. The 50 years- Don't Stop compilation is up to #7 after 252 weeks. I'm pleased that the casual fan might be hearing some of those 9 tracks from KH to HAHTF that are on the 3 disc edition for the first time, even if Why is absent. It annoys me that the final configuation of the band couldn't be bothered to record a single track for it, just for the sake of completeness. That says it all, really.

You’d think they would’ve at least released a live track of one of their uncovered gems - Black Magic Woman, Don’t Dream It’s Over, or the likely choice - Free Fallin’?

I can't tell if you're being ironic there, mate.

Amidst the undignified money-grabbing mess that was most of the band's final act, my one hope was that Christine and Neil could conjure up a bit of magic together. And no, Find your way home doesn't count.

Oh yes, extreme sarcasm! But also if they were so proud of that your, and it was now Christine’s final, why aren’t they releasing a live album from it?? At least have something with the bands name on it released that includes their 2018-19 members

It's absolutely mind boggling that they didn't release anything from the 2014/2015 tour as well. It's also crazy that The Dance was very quietly re-released on vinyl a few years ago and they missed a huge opportunity to do a deluxe box set. They could have done a 3-4 LP set with all of the tracks from the film that were not included in the CD release etc. It's odd that they would invest in taking all of the previously released outtakes to create the "Alternate" album series yet do the bare minimum for The Dance.

After 69 days from the release date, I just bought this album. With all concert songs I got from live albums, deluxe and expanded editions, some bootlegs, demos shared from ledgie fellows in the past, I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy another set of live songs. So I waited to read several reviews here, to be sure it is worth it to get one more collection of live performances.

Oh yes, it is. I'm listening this album all morning over and over again.

Gives you a real feeling of the natural narrative arc of a show, where the band ebbs and flows to match the audience enthusiasm. There’s lots to be said for single-concert CDs rather than compilation discs. I may have been happier with the tight compression of a soundboard, without crowd noise and mic “bleed,” but this is fine.

I just listened a few days ago, (again). I love this live work. It's fantastic.
