[2023-07-28] Stevie Nicks "Complete Studio Albums And Rarities" 10CD box set (Atlantic)

I know many will complain but as a long time fan of Stevie's music I'm excited to see Stevie's catalog getting some attention and for both "Real Tear" and "My Heart" officially on CD!

I'd love to know about this but is that a safe link? It isn't https

Is this legitimate? I've never heard of imwan. I thought she was with RHINO now.

If, indeed, these were really remastered, am I the only one who finds it odd they would stick everything in one not very exciting box set instead of going the route started with the BD and WH expanded sets, especially with RAL and TOSOTM? Seems like the latest is a looooong string of missed opportunities. I don't get it!

I suspect the Deluxe Editions of Bella Donna and The Wild Heart didn’t sell as well as expected. Also, Stevie’s lack of interest in being involved in the rerelease of her other albums probably led to the decision to release all of the albums together.

Like you, I would have preferred individual rereleases. Especially in the case of Rock a Little, which I believe the liner notes and lyrics were printed messed up and out of order; I’d have loved a corrected booklet.

Amusing that Show Them the Way isn’t included. Not that I’m complaining. Very happy Mirror Mirror is.

I'm hoping there's an announcement on her social media so I can see the tracklist.

If Show Them the Way is not on there, then For What It's Worth (The Buffalo Springfield) surely is, right?

For What It’s Worth is the last song on the last disc.

Not to complain--especially since I've boycotted since 2018,-- but I agree that this is another missed opportunity. A compilation of unreleased live shows would be far more interesting than--whatever this is. I guess since she's sold her catalog, they can just churn out anything they want for measly cash grabs here and there.

I’d guess the song is too long or RHINO thought “This song makes no sense”
Stevie’s been on the road since May of 2022 and has not performed it

I wish it would have been each individual remastered cd with rarities from Rock a Little to present like the first two albums but…whatever, I will still buy the Cd release for my collection.

The vinyl edition is crazy expensive, if Rhino wants people to drop £300 / $300 then they really should offer something like Blondie did with their 'Against The Odds' set, at least this had a lovely coffee table book included. Hopefully, the albums will be sold individually, I really don't need another copy of Bella Donna on vinyl, that album has been released so many times in lightly differing vinyl formats, would be nice to get Street Angel, Trouble In Shangri-La, and In Your Dreams on vinyl though, first time these have ever made their way to vinyl.

And why is the UK edition the same price as the US edition, seems Rhino must use the same currency calculators as Apple does on their iPhone prices!!

I mean....

Guess it's nice for the die hards who want vinyl. But I don't see anything shocking here.

The rarities track list is disappointing to me.

Would have rather heard a live show.

But I get it, Rhino is just pumping out the catalog.

Maybe I'll get it some day when it's all said and done with her career.

It's a major bummer not to get any outtakes or live recordings from RAL/OSOTM etc.

I bet that vinyl box set will be heavily discounted when sales slump.

Another cash grab so grab your cash and buy all the limited editions.

I don't believe Real Tears and Mirror Mirror have appeared on CD or vinyl before but hardly worth buying it for that.

WHAT'S INSIDE:

BELLA DONNA (1981)
THE WILD HEART (1983)
ROCK A LITTLE (1985)
THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MIRROR (1989)
STREET ANGEL (1994)
TROUBLE IN SHANGRI-LA (2001)
IN YOUR DREAMS (2011)
24 KARAT GOLD: SONGS FROM THE VAULT (2014)
STEVIE NICKS - RARITIES (2023)
COMPLETE STUDIO ALBUMS & RARITIES combines all of Stevie Nicks’ solo studio albums in a new, career-spanning boxed set. It comes with eight albums: BELLA DONNA (1981), THE WILD HEART (1983), ROCK A LITTLE (1985), THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MIRROR (1989), STREET ANGEL (1994), TROUBLE IN SHANGRI-LA (2001), IN YOUR DREAMS (2011), and 24 KARAT GOLD: SONGS FROM THE VAULT (2014). The collection also features RARITIES, a new compilation of hard-to-find tracks only available with the set. Several albums were newly remastered from the analog masters for this release, including ROCK A LITTLE, THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MIRROR, STREET ANGEL, and TROUBLE IN SHANGRI-LA.
COMPLETE STUDIO ALBUMS & RARITIES follows Nicks’ musical journey across four decades and features her Top 10 hits, “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” (with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), “Leather And Lace” (with Don Henley), “Stand Back,” and “Talk To Me.” Other essential hits include “Edge Of Seventeen,” “If Anyone Falls,” “I Can’t Wait,” and “Rooms On Fire.”
RARITIES collects 23 of Nicks’ best non-album tracks, including numerous contributions to film and television soundtracks like “Blue Lamp” from Heavy Metal and “Free Fallin’” from Party of Five. Several B-sides are featured in the set, including “One More Big Time Rock And Roll Star,” the flipside to her 1985 hit, “Talk To Me.” A trio of songs originally released on Nicks’ 1991 hits collection TIMESPACE also appear, including “Love’s A Hard Game To Play.” RARITIES closes with Nicks’ most recent release, her 2022 cover of Buffalo Springfield’s classic “For What It’s Worth.”
You can hear a sneak preview of "One More Big Time Rock And Roll Star" right here, right now.

I was really hoping a live audio Rock a Little concert would be included, with a live version of I Can’t Wait included, but unfortunately it’s not. I’m definitely not buying this. The rereleases of Bella Donna and the Wild Heart were very well done, and it appeared like Stevie was involved and instrumental in including extras and liner notes on those CDs, so it’s perplexing to me that she doesn’t appear to be involved in this.

So much unreleased stuff, such as those Dallas Austin tracks that will probably never see the light of day. I mean, how bad can those tracks be compared to Show Me the Way? I’m ok that Stevie doesn’t record anymore, but geez, why not just give people what they want- live stuff and unreleased tracks!

It definitely was a lost opportunity to release some lost 80s tracks. Most she would not be proud of. But there can be a few good ones at least from the RAL era. Of all the outtakes and demos from the OSOTM era are nothing I would want. The best tracks definitely made the album. Songs like Dial The Number and pure klonopin hell with Kenny G on sax.

What can be worse than the Tango outtakes from that box set? A release of earlier songs from the “3 Birds of Rhiannon” tracks etc.. would have made sense to be included with this release.

I also noticed there are so many songs missing here, which means this collection wouldn’t be a replacement for other collections. Songs like:

Whenever I Call You Friend
Gold and Braid
Magnet and Steel
Needles and Pins
Insider
Gold
Twisted

Plus songs that have never appeared on one of her albums:

Intuition
Desiree
The unedited Planets of the Universe
The Gypsy remake for the series
Beautiful People Beautiful Problems
Borrowed
You’re Not the One
You Can’t Fix This
Show Them the Way

In other words, a whole other disc would be needed. Too bad this seems to be such a rush job.

Oh look, ANOTHER version of Blue Lamp that isn't the incredible outtake.

Complete yawn and another missed opportunity. This might have been the chance to finally have the "alternate" Rock a Little with Running Through the Garden, Lady From the Mountains, etc (both INCREDIBLE outtakes that deserve a good quality release).

And does anyone else thinks its odd that there is a 70s pic of Stevie as the cover but no music from that time period?

Bleh.

The design of the box is really half-baked. A design intern at Rhino would have done a better job. This makes me wonder if this is another Chris Nicks design.

Also, a big white box is playing with fire. It's going to show every scratch, dent, and scuff that could possibly happen in shipping/fulfillment.

It's interesting that there has been a focus on utilizing early '75 photography, I wonder if theres a specific reason behind using photos from that time or if somebody on staff at Rhino is biased towards them. It makes me wonder if there is some sort of issue with Herbie's estate and getting licensing for any of his photos. It could also be camp Stevie avoiding any photography from the drug years.

The vinyl box cost about the same price as two crappy arena nosebleed seats on her current tour. The vinyl box is a better deal, IMO.

Several years ago somebody here on the ledg said they had a contact in the industry and apparently they wanted to do deluxe versions of her other solo albums and she expressed zero interest in wanting anything to do with it. I don't know how true any of that is, but that was the comment at the time.

Back in the 1990's I gave all my Stevie solo CD's to a friend who lacked funds but loved her music. I figured at the time they would be easily replaced. They weren't. I shunned the 1999 multiple Stevie CD with the ink pen on the cover because of the same attitude most of you share and regretted not buying that many times over. I decided I am going to order this 10 CD collection because most of the songs say "2023 Remaster." An upgrade in sound is always welcome. Plus I am thrilled to have a CD copy of One More Big Time Rock & Roll Star, Real Tears & I think it said Desert Angel (I only looked at the list once). Plus to top it off I just remembered as I was typing this that I have a 100 dollar credit with Amazon for a returned gift item! So this is a total win win situation for me.

This is the part that makes me sad. She won't give any credits due to what she considers to be her less-than-stellar albums because they were considered commercial flops. This is part of what has made me lose some respect for her, she says she cares about her artistry, but her actions speak louder than her words.

I'll still love her music, but her personality has lost a lot of charm for me. She's basically been in the bitter old maid era for quite some time.

I did a bunch of 24 Karat Gold Tour shows and had fun but I believe that was when she stopped being an artist. After the Mac tour ended in 15, she should have got into a studio like she says she always does after a Mac tour and Lindsey goes on vacation to Hawaii, and recorded another album or another Songs From the Vault (which she said she’d record a second Songs From the Vault in a 2014 interview).

We got a 24 Karat Gold Tour that barely touched the album the tour was named for. Whereas the In Your Dreams Tour and Trouble In Shangri-La Tour had 5-8 new or newer (Sorcer and Love Is we’re newer) performed each night.

Then after 24KG you had Stevie returning to the 2005-2010 style set list (which included a surprise like Love Is so that would be I Sing for the Things for this tour)

BigAl84

She was a bitter old maid going into the 2014/2015 Fleetwood Mac tour. Christine's return put a big damper on her plans and proceeded to make it very clear to the band via her "alleged" two weeks album drama and Rolling Stone cover story.

Christine broke the 3 year rule..tsk tsk tsk.

Yes I remember that. I dont think she is proud of her mid to late 80s work because of drugs. She does not perform songs from RAL or OSOTM in concert anymore. I think RAL is a horrible album. HOWEVER, I would love to have the RAL Running Through the Garden and The extended version of The Nightmare on CD. Throw in the extended version of the song RAL and a few more outtakes and that could make a nice extra disc for a RAL reissue. RAL is the only Mac/Stevie album that I never upgraded to CD since the 80s. I dont own a copy and threw the album away years ago when turntables were coming to an end. But I could buy a RAL reissue. There is some better material around than what is on the album.
OSOTM is something I would not care for a deluxe version because of all the leftovers and demos I heard, they are horrible. Unlike RAL where the worst tracks made the album and some better ones were left off, OSOTM the best tracks are on the album and the horrible ones left off. She recorded RAL for 2 years. There is tons of material to go through. Much of it cokey screams but when you pan for gold you might just find a nugget here or there.

Ok. Dream on silly dreamer

Initially I was keen on the idea of a remastered ROCK A LITTLE (the MIRROR album would need remixing because the original is beyond hope) and several cuts on the last two CDs: VIOLET AND BLUE, BATTLE OF THE DRAGON, REAL TEARS, INSPIRATION, THOUSAND DAYS, and RECONSIDER ME.

Then I remembered how bad the remastering was on Stevie’s 2019 box collection and the 50 YEARS DON’T STOP box.

If the remastering isn’t as excellent as it was for THE VERY BEST OF FM (2002) with Daniel Hersch and especially Bill Inglot at the helm, don’t even bother.

Also, the Welcome to the Room...Sara demo.
I think Enchanted is her best box set. Crystal Visions was a joke. 2019 picked the worst tracks from In Your Dreams and 24 Karat Gold.

The only thing that was a miss was not including a 4th disc. I know the “powers to be” thought it would keep the price down. No.. songs like Real Rears, Mirror Mirror and her “Rhiannon” songs among others could have and should have been included. Every time I open up the box set I think about that.

I’d like to get the vinyl set but with the shipping and exchange it ends up costing around $550.00Canadian. It’s too much money. I think though it’s a missed opportunity as she could have included outtakes / unreleased content from her solo albums as well as live performances. Bring that it’s all white it will show any wear and tear easily.

I imagine that's because she was personally involved. It was a passion project for her. I don't think this new box will be anything like that. Does 're-mastered'
really justify the price tag? It would be nice if she was personally involved somehow...

I want individual remastered LPs. I already have Bella Donna and the Wild Heart. The rarities could have been better. I am happy Show Them the Way is NOT on. I did not like that and interestingly, I did not even think of it when I saw the track listing. It just never comes to mind. I am not a fan of cover of For What It's Worth. She has so many of her own songs to have gotten here. I would have recorded some new if she is not Doing 24 Karat Gold Part 2. Julia, Forest of the Black Roses and Sanctuary are 3. I would not have included Somebody Stand By Me either.

You make great points.

I actually wonder if Show Them The Way is not on here because it may be included on a studio album one day. Recording a disc of demos to go a long with this is a brilliant idea and I would have paid the $300.

I wish we’d get an expanded TISL but there were no bonus tracks for that, right?

The only other tracks I can think that aren't already represented at the moment would be the extended version of "Planets of the Universe" and the TISL version of "Thrown Down". The latter would have been a killer track on TISL. There's also "Call on Me For Magic", which sounds like it could have been for a soundtrack, which never materialized. I think it was recorded during the TISL sessions, but I'm not sure it was intended for TISL.
