This is not new but this article was trending yesterday. It's pretty scary to break off a relationship because drug use is so bad you fear one of you will die. I guess I know why the Wild Heart concert I saw was so messed up. Its interesting that she said she never met him until 1983. You would think their paths would have crossed before then. But then again, Stevie always gets years and dates messed up. The worst thing you can do is tour with your flame who was the biggest drunk and drug addict in rock. It brought Stevie into a completely new level of addiction which impacted her so much that she could not even get her next album finished. If they truly never met until 1983, it must have been a concert promoter that thought it was a good touring concert to have an Eagles and Mac member tour together. What if Joe was never picked to open for Stevie? She was already a coke head but would she not have went off the deep end?

She was also mourning the death of her friend Robin, which she said mad her crazy. So I don't know. I certainly think Joe was not the greatest guy to be having a fling with when you are already doing a lot of drugs.

It was a love affair doomed from the start, the tragedy of two souls destined to destroy each other in a last gasp of undying devotion. It’s a real long way to go. Thoughts?

Its interesting that she said she never met him until 1983.

If Joe had remained in the James Gang for a while longer, they would have met circa 1972 when Keith Olsen was working with the James Gang while Stevie and Lindsey were living in his house:

The best memory was when Stevie and Lindsey lived with me in my little Coldwater Cyn house in LA.... I was going to NYC to mix a live concert in Central Park for the James Gang.... Stevie and Lindsey's car had blown its transmission... so I lent them my car.... only if they would drive me to where the Limo was picking up the band at 5:00am .... and when I returned 3 days later pick me back up.... You have to imagine the next part... Stevie in a long heavy cotton robe... trying to drive a stick shift car... where the end of the robe got caught up in the pedals.... As she drove away (after dropping me off) the lead singer for the James Gang said " Keith, you'll never see that car again.." Well I said that he was crazy-- she only had to go 1.5 miles.....

I flew to NYC and went directly to Central Park.... got to the hotel at around 11:00pm EST... had a message that said call home ASAP!

I called ... Lindsey got on the phone... and told me everyone was OK, but the car was in my neighbors bedroom....... Stevie had parked the car, pulled on the brake...(1 Click), and went back to bed... the car rolled down the hill, flipped end over end 3 times and was hurled through the air and into the bedroom of the house below me.

But Joe had left the James Gang at the end of 1971, and the lead singer he mentions was someone else.

That's the MOST $tevie story I've ever heard, and so believable.
She truly won the lottery of life, succeeding, while given her knack at screwing up anything in sight. Ahh, to be a pretty 27yo, that the entire world wants to screw.... the world is your oyster!

I think there is slightly more to her success than being screwable.
Though it certainly helped.
Her early lyrics are poetry, and her melodies, with Lindsey working his magic are very good….for the era they come from. And that’s important.

But yes being a screwable attractive 27yo didn’t hurt.

True but when Stevie was dating Don, Joe was in the Eagles. I find it hard to believe there were not parties or back stage events Stevie did not attend with the Eagles at some point. And were there not a few stadium shows during Hotel California era? The bands played together so its almost impossible for her not to have met him. He may have not paid her any attention though.
The airport/car story was funny. I can almost hear Lindsey and Stevie arguing in the car on the way back. At least she found the airport though. In Mick's book he wrote that she was supposed to pick him up at the airport in Hawaii and Stevie and her friend dropped acid and could not find the airport. They just drove all over the island laughing hyterically.

The James Gang played at the Schaefer Music Fesitival in Central Park, NYC on August 28, 1972, so apparently that was the date of Stevie's little debacle. Certainly a memorable date for the family that got a car through their bedroom ceiling!

Regarding the Eagles, Stevie has told the story in earlier interviews of how when she was dating Don, Glenn Frey did.not.like.her. According to her, he thought she was just dating Don because he was famous, because it would get her some attention, etc. She quoted him walking in one time (I think she was having dinner with Don or something) and making comments like "Oh she's here" or similar. In that same interview she said yeah the Eagles were definitely far bigger stars at that point, but FM had the first album and was touring and starting to have hits and all that. I remember she said "I worked, I had a job!" as in, she wasn't just some groupie. But he didn't warm to her.

Now, after she and FM became huge superstars and they were all together in that PR game, which Stevie is especially invested in, everyone was her 'best friend' and 'we loved each other' and all that crap. But I wonder if he ever really did end up liking her or not.

There was that tribute to Linda Rondstadt where he was still alive and was hosting parts of it and I tried to watch any interactions between him and Stevie. They didn't seem to go out of their way to stand next to each other or hug or interact in any of the ways he did with some of the other women onstage. Who knows. Given how much Don and Glenn fought with each other, likely Don really didn't care what his bandmate thought. I do recall Felder having nice things to say about her in interviews.

It's interesting, it feels like there's always one guy in any of the bands she's insinuated herself into who didn't like her. In the Heartbreakers it was Stan Lynch. In Petty's authorized bio, when asked about her he says "Don't get me started on Stevie......"

While I'm rarely one to defend Stevie, and also speaking as a huge Eagles fan, I have to say that I think Glenn was a complete ass, especially in his younger years. All the footage I've seen of him made him look impossible. A JERK. Kind of like Lindsey, to be honest. They both mellowed with age, but they were both impossible when they were young.

I've heard that too. As much as I like Don too, he is a bit nutty too. He has incredible talent and is one of the best drummers, singers, song writers ever. But its always a classless act to out a woman about an abortion. Glenn and Don were really tight together and I think they both had a tremendous amount of arrogance between them. I love how he constantly judged people in his songs like Life In the Fast Lane, Dirty Laundry, Hotel California, and Sunset Grill, etc. The bubble headed bleach blonde was the LA reporter on TV. She came on at 6 but it did not rhyme so he wrote 5. I love it but it is a window into him how he was preaching against the California, pretty party people YET he was one of them. Lastly, if he dated Stevie you know he had to be bat **** crazy too.

TOTALLY agree they were both (Don and Glenn) flaming a$$holes.

Which is why it's so disappointing how often Stevie talked about Don and the eagles and their influence on her, especially as she puts it "teaching her how to be rich" or "how to be a rockstar". I read an old article where she had said that it's Don's fault (of course not hers) that she never looks at a price tag for anything, and that she learned that by watching him and his band. They lived large, she said, and she aspired to that and just blindly it seems mimicked it, and it would also seem, never has really re-assessed whether that was the right choice. She's always been blinded by the glitz, from FM showing up at their first meeting in the old limos with the big fins, or Mick's 24k gold chain (which he says she never knew existed and became infatuated by it) or Don and the cranberry Lear jet (even though he did that for most of the women he regularly banged, hence the joke in the Eagles "Love 'em and Lear 'em") and the nice hotels and the stupid sh&t like if you have to look at the price tag you aren't rich and famous and "I only have cashmere blankets" and "I never carry my suitcase" blah blah blah. That was the huge difference between her and Chris, who WOULD carry her own bag, at least her carry on, and who didn't have 15 assistants, and wasn't it only on the last big Mac tour that Chris said she caved and got an assistant AND a second hotel room to put her clothes racks and other ****? Not like Miss "I Get the Presidential Suite because I DEMAND it"

She wanted and craved every ounce of the life she has.

Btw, so does Mick. That's why that dumb ass is always broke.
