View Full Version : The videos we have never seen

What other songs do we wish had videos? And I mean not just concert recordings but produced videos, like Gypsy, As long as you follow, Big Love, etc. It is true that MTV appeared in August 1981 but before that there were already notable productions such as those by Queen, Abba, Bowie, Blondie, Boomtown Rats and so on.
There are many on my list but the ones that come to mind right now are videos of Love in Store, Sara, Isn't it midnight, Monday Morning.

Neat question. I always thought Warner and FM kind of blew a unique opportunity by not having the band appear in Everywhere- what a great way to introduce Rick and Billy to the audience! I know they were strapped for time because Lindsey’s departure only left less than 2 months to prepare for the tour, but I think it would have paid off. Same thing with Isn’t It Midnight- a video showcasing Rick playing guitar would have been excellent.
Over My Head always kind of reminds me of a day at the fair or carnival, so seeing FM walking around a fair (and before they became famous) would have been easy to do. Can you imagine Lindsey, Stevie, and Christine sitting on a Ferris Wheel or carousel LOL?
Sara lended itself to a concert performance- I think a produced video would have diminished the song.

The most frustrating/annoying thing being a Mac fan in the late 80s and early 90s was the MTV did not air the videos for Everywhere, As Long As You Follow, and Skies the Limit. Back then Vh1 was sort of the easy listening/oldies video channel. You had to hunt them down on Vh1.
After 3 singles and 3 videos, the Mac was busy on tour so that explains the dumb and memberless video for Everywhere. I have ALWAYS thought the Everywhere video should have been taken from their video/live concert that is performed live. I always thought that would have been a hit on MTV to see the band perform live with the new members.
I know the band barely could get through the Hold Me video but I wish there was video for Love In Store. It would have promoted the song to maybe even crack the top 10. It was almost unheard of for a single not to have a video in 1982. In some ways the videos made the song more popular than the radio.

More concert footage from the Dave Walker era would be highly appreciated. To my knowledge there is only one video from the Penguin lineup up on YouTube and it doesn't even have any audio.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WndOAs8Lc9M&t=41s
To my knowledge, there are no videos of Lindsey Buckingham playing his double neck guitar.
I really would like to see a performance of Future Games and Sands Of Time, and of course, more with Bob Weston and Bob Welch together!!
Even when I have on my mind an entire version of Mirage on video, more videos of Tusk would have been amazing for their time, but something original, not just the band performing like on the Rumours classics!
I can't imagine Love Is Dangerous without a music video with Stevie with her very long hair and a hat and Rick with his pretty guitar!!
I might be crazy, but I thought at one point I read/heard somewhere that there was video for "No Questions Asked" that got scrapped...?
While they weren't blowing up MTV at that moment, they all looked great and any extra coverage couldn't have hurt.

On first read I agreed, but after second thoughts I think it could be done. It would be a Citizen Kane of music videos. Think Meatloaf's Anything For Love video, but instead Stevie plays a gothic crone, cooped up in a castle turret, singing mournfully at her piano surrounded by candles... Wait, she could just record this herself over Zoom right now.

Maybe. Gypsy is certainly a great song, but the video actually added to the power of the song- throwing in the Great Depression, which isn’t in the song but is something I envision when I hear the song now.

Mick, John, and Christine were originally featured in the video. Maybe they were taken out to avoid confusion about who was in the band?

I agree, it did add. The video reflects Stevie's fantasy world, though along the 80's that fantasy went too far, but at the time of the video it was great.
and that a new cable television channel called MTV was broadcasting our new videos ("Hold Me" set in desert dunes, "Gypsy" in a Stevie fantasy world).

I would put my money on the depression theme was not Stevie's idea. They paid HUGE bucks for a movie director who probably came up with that concept IMHO. Stevie never had the say over her Civil War Stand Back video either. Some video "expert" painted the picture for her and she said ok. Then when she saw it, was not thrilled with it.
I also don't believe anyone in the band came up with the desert Hold Me theme either. Can someone chime in? They never were crazy about making videos. The record company insisted and hired creative people for the concept. I don't see the band saying....Yay, lets go to the desert heat and film a video. IMHO one reason they were so pissed off about the process is what they had to go through. Didn't John punch one of the directors during the shoot?

You mean it was very hot that day there? (Actually I never knew where Hold me was filmed).
I never liked the Hold Me video, it is so simple, I mean it could be filmed in a desert, or in a beach, a garden, etc. and the result would be almost the same.

Yes not long ago the director of the video spilled the beans. They were all in separate tents and it was miserably hot. The band was not getting along which is why you never see them all together in a video shot. Stevie was high as a kite and was sinking through the sand. John was drunk and punched the producer. Sand blowing in everyone's eyes. It was a neat concept though.

Mirrors that implicated a mirage. I think during the lead up to the Big Love video premier on MTV Mark Goodman said the same thing about the special effects in the video Hold Me.
In your mind, what does the mirror image represent? Mike Pence as the Mona Lisa? I think most people got the basic special effect that it was a mirage or mirage type vision. Stevie walking on top of a sand hill with a giant painting is not seen as some sort of mirage to you? Why must we always have to explain the basics to you?

I’ve never heard how they came up with Mirage, which is interesting because they have said many times how they came up with the names Rumours and Tusk.
I like they stuck to another one word title, and the only reason I can think for the name is maybe it was metaphorical. Is it true, or just a mirage that FM is back together. You know, that sort of thing. After Tusk and Bella Donna, there were doubts FM would make another album. That’s the only thing I can think of.

Even Pitchfork acknowledged the ambiguity surrounding Mirage's title.
"It’s hard to find any comment about why they chose to name their thirteenth record (and fifth under this lineup) Mirage, though the resonance is obvious in hindsight: It’s the illusion of the band, rather than the full-blooded beast."

Wow, I would agree with that assessment. It does seem to be the illusion of a band album, rather than the full-blooded beast. Every album from Tusk on, with the exception of Behind the Mask, lacks the band sound from the White Album and Rumours. Not entirely, but a lot of it.

3. Christine throws a letter and it turns into a hat.

Chris walking with the horse was the coolest part and of course Mick and John finding all the Fender guitars. I remember Chris saying that Fender donated the guitars but they all had to go back which was a mess since they were covered in sand.
The silhouette at the beginning peaks my interest. We demand to know answers!
The coolest part of the Big Love video was the shortest. The quick shot of the band around the beach fire at night was so freaking cool in an otherwise ok video

I always just figured that the director of the “Hold Me” vid wanted to pay a little homage to Magritte. All those images of sand dunes and mirrors with illogical reflections and bowler hats are all famous Magritte paintings. Also, I vaguely recall that Lindsey’s Aunt Nancy suggested calling the album Mirage — but I don’t know why the band went with it. It doesn’t make much of an impression, other than a passingly odd one. Maybe a better title could have been lifted from the song “Can’t Go Back.”

It is. When you mentioned Magritte I googled and found this.
The video for this song was inspired in large part by the works of the Belgian painter Magritte, whose paintings appear in the clip. It was directed by Steve Barron and shot in the Mojave Desert. The combination of extreme heat and band tension made for a very difficult shoot. Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks had all started solo projects, and getting the band to collaborate was a lesson in futility. The video's producer Simon Fields said in I Want My MTV by Craig Marks, "John McVie was drunk and tried to punch me. Stevie Nicks didn't want to walk on the sand with her platforms. Christine McVie was fed up with all of them They were a fractious bunch."
The video was subpar, but it was a fresh Fleetwood Mac video, which was good enough for MTV, which in 1982 was desperate for new clips by rock artists, especially established ones. Fleetwood Mac's video for "Tusk" was one of the few they had available when they launched on August 1, 1981.

I can understand why John may have come up with Mirage. They had done Tusk which many saw as a disaster and wanted to return to a Rumours-esque type of formula. In terms of a single word, I don’t think it’s any more deep than trying to think of an ‘enigmatic word’ that encapsulates a feeling of uncertainty. At the end of the day, if you begin with rumours as a starting point, then Mirage is a logical ‘word’ that meets the brief.
What else? Maybe ‘Enigma’

I don’t even count videos like In the Back of My Mind, Everywhere, or Paper Doll. I just think Hold Me is a forgettable video. Ok for what it was, when it was, but subpar overall. I like seeing Stevie in a red dress, and it’s fun to watch Christine “act”- she does a good job emoting the lyrics, but it’s a simple video. And there ain’t nothing wrong with that. Not all videos need to be epic masterpieces.

But it was ground breaking and cost a lot of money for its time. Back in those days people tried to be creative with making videos. I think the Mirage videos are better than anything Tango ever put out including everyone's solo careers.

Gypsy is pretty extraordinary. It cost a lot, but every penny shows. It was clever to put Stevie in the background for Hold Me, considering the unprecedented role she played in Gypsy.
I wonder if your love of FM is why you love the video for Hold Me so much? If it were another band, would you enjoy it as much? I don’t know, I’m just asking. I know for As Long As You Follow, Save Me, and Skies the Limit, it’s my love of FM that makes me love those videos, but if it were another band with those same videos, I probably wouldn’t like them nearly as much.

I’m sure when the video for Hold Me was first released, some folks were surprised at how little she appeared. By putting Stevie in the background (and rightly so, as you mentioned she’s not even on the song) there was little risk of overexposure to the audience, or jealousy by her band mates, considering the large role she played in Gypsy.

I dont get what you are saying. Stevie was the writer and lead singer of Gypsy. Why would she not get most of the spotlight? I dont think anyone got jealous. It would have been rude to exclude Stevie from the Hold Me video so they had to include her some way. She is not on vocals and does not play an instrument. I dont think she is in it less than John or Mick. I think everyone got their fair share. Its a Chris/Lindsey song so them taking the lead would be normal. I just dont agree there was a conscious effort to keep her in the background. There are multiple shots of her up close painting, laying, and carrying a painting.

There are multiple shots of her up close painting, laying, and carrying a painting.I’ve always thought “Hold Me” was a much-better-than-average video, with lots of little production touches and colors that took you on a little journey into a famous painter’s style. Just watch some of the other MTV videos from 1982 to appreciate how hip “Hold Me” is. In 1982 all the bands were doing the same thing in their videos: standing on a pretend stage and lip-syncing or acting out stupid little mini-dramas, heavy spotlights from behind, wind and fog machines, petroleum jelly or stockings over the lens to make everything look gauzy, dancers in stiletto heels (all the cliches that “Love Will Show Us How” was poking fun at). Michael Jackson was doing videos that were actually good, as everyone knows, but who else? Springsteen did an excellent video for “Atlantic City” which ignored all the conventions and cliches, but that was a rare exception in the early 80s. Most of the dreck I watched every afternoon after class was like “Don’t You Want Me Baby” or “My Angel Is a Centerfold” or “Who Can It Be Now” — videos that were only tolerable because the song was cool. Now they’re all just corny nostalgia. But “Hold Me” is good corny nostalgia, visually.
Edit: Peter Gabriel, “Shock the Monkey” — excellent.

Now that’s what I’m talking about! Lindsey playing guitar on stage, with the fog machine on full blast surrounding him, and hands reaching out to touch his guitar, while Christine is playing keyboards with her hair blowing via wind machine, and Stevie twirling around and around. That would have been so much better! Dancers would have been a nice touch, too.
Or maybe not.

It is extraordinary. How much did it cost? It's weird Mick mentioned Big Love video cost and not Gypsy's, which obviously had to cost much more. Weird for Mr. money.
We spent a quarter million dollars on the totally surreal video for "Big Love," the single of which quickly jumped into the Top Ten.

Supposedly, Gypsy was the first music video to cost a million dollars. I have no idea if that’s true but considering the filming, camera work, costumes, number of extras in the video, the sets, the number of days it must have taken to film, and that incredible painted backdrop at the end of the video, and I believe it.
I wonder if the record company helped pay for the video for Gypsy, seeing as how MTV was still fairly new then. That would also explain why Mick mentioned the cost of Big Love, because by 1987 I wouldn’t be surprised if the band may have had to pony up more money to make videos. Just a guess.

I thought I’d say a little bit about what I like about some of the videos.
First, I think I would move Little Lies to #1 on my list. This video is dang near perfect- the animation coming to life looks great, and the setting is pretty fabulous. I mean, the director probably packed everyone on their separate limos and said ok, start mingling lol. I love the different combinations- Christine and Lindsey, John and Stevie, Christine, Mick, and John, etc. The barn setting, Christine at the piano, and finally the entire band performing together, it all works. Perfect foreshadowing of Lindsey leaving the band and they all look beautiful.
Gypsy- it’s just a beautiful product; it’s literally a short film. Even the dancing with the extras in the rain is remarkable- they’re not in perfect sync, which makes me like the video even more.
Big Love- cool 80s video that everyone remembers when it goes in reverse near the end; Stevie’s hair almost steals the show, but Lindsey is the star here. I think Macfan4life mentioned the scene where the band is on the beach by a campfire- can you imagine how many hours it must have taken to get that literally 3 second shot?!? I would have liked to have seen more of that.
Save Me- Christine does what I think is her best emoting here. And she looks gorgeous. Look at the scene where she sings “I can’t wait any longer for paradise” and her eyes and head tilt to the right. Her comfort with the camera had improved significantly since her solo songs, and it showed here significantly. And watching Rick play is such a joyous thing. Interesting use of shadows, too.
As Long As You Follow- watching these six perform this song on a hotel room set is about as intimate a setting as you can get. I wonder if it was inspired by all those stories about how they used to jam in someone’s hotel room on nights after a show, because that was how much they enjoyed that first tour. They all look beautiful here, too, especially Christine. The story with the other actors is watchable and somewhat curious, but thankfully doesn’t distract too much from the band.
What is it the rest of you like about your favorite FM videos?

Maybe I am in the minority but was not crazy about the Big Love video. It was my least favorite of the Tango series. We barely see the other band members except them playing a minimal goofy set up in front of a house. Stevie had that horrific Red Rocks touch up hair with bangs on the side and poofy on top. I thought the special effects of Lindsey floating towards the camera while playing was pretty basic even for 1987. But its a cheezy song so not sure anything other than a cheezy video would suffice.

Yes I do. The parts you mention in the red dress she looks great but we only get fast glimpses of her. The rest of the video is trash. It appears no one knows what to do and her brother pretending to play saxophone on the wall is just cheezy. That dance they do is stupid. Notice how far away they shoot her in many aspects of the video. The close ups besides the red dress are not there. Hint hint. Stevie failed to show for the Talk To Me shoot because she was "sick." You can tell it was a mad dash to throw together various clips to finalize something. When the video debuted, the song was already in the top 20 or something. But the worst part for me is the end when she exposes her neon gloves. OMG. Stevie embracing the Madonna look in 1985 sent shivers down my spine. Where was my rock goddess?

Yes I do. The parts you mention in the red dress she looks great but we only get fast glimpses of her. The rest of the video is trash. It appears no one knows what to do and her brother pretending to play saxophone on the wall is just cheezy. That dance they do is stupid. Great memory. I do remember watching out for this video and finally seeing it as this song climbed the charts. . It didn't really air much. And I remember having some of the same feelings about it as you did.

And didn't parts of it have a nautical theme or something which made no sense. You know those windows they have on ships/boats. And Stevie rising from the floor near a mirror was such a bad Gypsy rip off. Paaaaaleeeeze!

The opening intro alone is weird. Isn't she doing weird pilates moves or something.???

I recall reading an interview in USA Today when I Can’t Wait came out where she said something like when it comes to videos, she had only three requests- that they film her far away, that they film her real close, and that they show her play the tambourine. She also mentioned she was recovering from nasal surgery.
If I recall correctly, I think Stevie revisited the set from Talk to Me in the video for Sometimes It’s a Bitch.

What video shows her playing tambourine? I can't recall any video. I think a second of I Cant Wait just like you get a flash of a guitar before someone comes crashing through the wall like a giant pitcher of Kool Aid. OH YEAH
Here is a poor shape Stevie talking about her "new" I Cant Wait Video for Australia countdown. Who the hell did her racoon makeup?

Were her jingles taped down again, to hide her arrhythmia?

I just watched the video for Sometimes It’s a Bitch alternate edit, and Stevie is on a set just like the one in Talk to Me, so she must have liked how that video turned out. Her band in that video from TimeSpace was really good.

I have been lately, haven’t I?!? I was watching Trouble several times a day a few months ago, because some of those guys were pretty cute. And it was interesting watching Talk to Me and seeing Stevie in something/anything besides a black dress. And that Brad guy is always worth looking at, too.

I have no idea who this Brad is? Member of her solo band?
I haven't followed her solo career since OSOTM. I still have my Wild Heart Tour T-shirt. I haven't worn it in decades, but it's turned to dust on it's own. You can see through it now, it's so thin.
I am 'friends' with Waddy, but that's because he's played on other records that I love. There is a guy named David Nail, that I became OBSESSED with his first album, about 10 years ago. Played it literally every day for 3-4 years. I never bothered to read the liner notes......turns out that Waddy was the guitar player on it. Coincidence that I became obsessed with the sound of that record???

One of these days you'll be outside in the rain, your heart will skip a beat and you'll be lonely. And then and only then will you realize you should have kept up with every band member of the boss's band!

I had to look on Stevie’s forum to find his last name- Brad Jeffries was the main dancer in Stand Back, and appeared in most of her other videos. He was particularly memorable as the guy who holds his hand out to Stevie to dance with her in Rooms on Fire. He also appeared in the Red Rocks concert during Stand Back, although I don't think we can see much of his face. He also choreographed some of Madonna’s concerts. He was a beautiful man and apparently remains a good friend of Stevie.

Tony Danza is the Boss. I love me some early Stevie. There's nothing left to love, IMO. No voice. No songs. Just twirling streamers from her mic stand (I was watching the 2003 concert on Youtube last night, and she was just moving the streamers around). Sad.

True story. Around July 2014 wish, I gave up my seat from JFK - LAX for a couple that wanted to sit together and my new seat was next to Judith Light. We talked for hours about our cats and how much we loved them more than our husbands. I told her she was my TV mom. She hugged me when we said goodbye at the luggage area.

Does anyone remember the Who's the Boss episode where Stevie Nicks is mentioned? Its 1986 and Angela has big hair and someone says, who do you think you are Stevie Nicks? Or this is my Stevie Nicks look.

Maybe I'm confusing episodes, but I do remember Angela got the big hair. But I don't remember that question. What I do remember is Angela talking to Samantha about a magazine or interview with Stevie, and Samantha ask "Stevie Nicks?"; Angela answered "Yes, or did you think Stevie Wonder?" (Or maybe Winwood, but in the spanish translation she says Wonder, sometimes they change for the most popular names in Latin America). Though I can't remember it was the same big hair episode or another.

I dont remember that one. Maybe there are 2 then. In this one Anglela gets a make over or something and is going out on the town and is all dressed up with big hair. She's standing near the door and the stairs and Samantha comments something about her look and Stevie Nicks. In this one there was no magazine interview, it was related to Angela's big hair.
