View Full Version : Kate Bush turned down an offer to open for the Tusk Tour

With Kate Bush in the news for the chart resurgence of "Running Up That Hill", I felt it would be a good time to share this tidbit.

"Even more tantalising was an offer to support Fleetwood Mac in the US in late ’79. A high-profile slot opening for one of the most successful bands in the world would was an open goal for most artists. But Bush wasn’t most artists.

'Like most support acts, she was going to get half an hour, no dancers and no magicians, so just going up there with four musicians and banging out a couple of hits,” says Brian Southall. “And she wasn’t prepared to do that.'"

Danny Douma and Christopher Cross opened for certain Tusk Tour shows instead.

Douma opened for many of the 1979 dates, although Christopher Cross did indeed open for the tour on several occasions. I will edit my original post to address that.

Here's your flip flop sandals that you ordered. However, you must have covered shoes to be in the establishment.

Thank you for your business.

Yeah, isn’t that weird? Who picked the opening acts back then, the tour sponsors? In 1979, they could have had their pick of a dozen good opening acts in the New Wave — Joe Jackson, the Specials, the Cars, Graham Parker, Squeeze. I think it’s great for a top-of-the-bill to get an opener that is a little edgier and trendier. It provides a nice balance. Christopher Cross was always bland middle-of-the-road, and the Night Eyes were too, come to think of it, even though they never acquired an audience. Bob Marley opened in Germany in June 1980, which was not a good fit, either, even though Marley is a legend in his own right. Actually, Fleetwood melding with Men at Work in 1982 was a good ticket, even though Men at Work weren’t critics’ darlings like Fleetwood.

But Kate Bush?! In a mass-market arena-rock setting — good God. Imagine how far the audiences in Detroit or Cleveland would have tossed her when she sang “Kashka from Baghdad” or “Wow.”

Bush has never toured the United States, having only toured once in Europe during 1979 and again in 2014, with the latter being a concert residency in London. She didn't have many hits in the country, with "The Man With The Child in His Eyes" being the only song that broke the Hot 100 by 1979/80.

The Cars were headlining arenas by 1979 .I saw them at the same venue where I attended the Tusk show and they had sold it out just 3 months before so no way. I agree about Kate although I have never heard that she was offered to open for FM on the Tusk tour .I wonder what the source is.

Thanks! Amazed that I had never heard about this since I have been a fan of both for many decades. Must be because Kate put the instant kibosh on it.

Also little known are the fascinating first lyrics to her 1985 hit, originally a song of regret about certain career choices made in 1979.

And if I only could
I'd make a deal with Cross
And I'd get him to swap our places
Be opening for that tour
Be opening for that band
Be opening for Fleetwood
(Mac, Mac, Mac)

Oh, come on, Stevie
Oh, come on, Lindsey
Let me steal this moment from you now
Oh, come on, Angel
Come on Not That Funny
Let's exchange the experience

This was very well done! Does that make Christopher Cross a god?

Now I'm craving a theatrical Kate Bush cover of "Not That Funny".

A version of Fleetwood Mac that had Kate Bush instead of Stevie is worth a fantastical thought or two, though, isn't it? Imagine her with Lindsey's guitar the Fleetwood/McVie rhythm section and a bit of tasteful Christine backing vocals...

Or the type of albums that they would have made!. Musically and in the studio she is Lindsey's equal. A far cry from Nicks's very basic musical skills.

Stevie could play Row Row Row your boat on the piano really well, Which is what Rhiannon sounds like when she's on piano.

Isn’t there some recent interview where Lindsey is asked if Stevie had left in the 80s, who he would’ve considered as an interesting replacement, to which he answered Kate. Something like that.

Well would it bother you if you had written the basics of…
Gypsy.
Leather and Lace.
Sara.
Gold dust woman.
Landslide.
Edge of seventeen..
Etc etc etc..
Etc etc etc..

Didn't she write the score to Songbird and knocked on Chris's door in the middle of then night when they both couldn't sleep? Or at least she told Chris what key to play it in?
And correct me if I am wrong but didn't Stevie actually name the song Songbird and said that it was a prequel to Nightbird?

I'd always thought "Big Love" was heavily influenced by "Running Up That Hill" and there are some quotes from Lindsay and an engineer that add weight to the idea. Musically they're fairly similar, but lyrically too.

Here's one article that namedrops her ... but I remember another as well.

I never realized Kate Bush was this delightful.

What’s the meaning behind “Running Up That Hill?”

People ask me that often. Some think it’s about literally running up a hill, but it’s not. I’ve never even seen a hill, let alone run up one.

You’ve never seen a hill?

No. Never. Why would I do that?

I just imagined everyone has seen a hill. There’s one right outside this window. Have a look.

I won’t be doing that. Please continue the interview without anymore hill questions.

While the literature PhDs over at Gaffa Web posit all sorts of arcane references and connections to poetry and art in her lyrics and build elaborate metaphors, the Fleetwood Mac fan base scratches their collective head, wondering where that damn hill is.

No but... I've actually been listening to Ravel (The Cleveland Orchestra, Krystian Zimerman) Piano Concerto in G M 83. and many more Concertos - Valses nobles et sentimentales.....

1998 release... Sorry if I spelled any of that incorrectly.
