Nice journal entry from Stevie.
I noticed she mentioned "Don't forget what we were fighting for; don't forget it" as her mother's response to 9/11
That line is from her song "Show Them the Way"
I took the line "Don't forget..." from the song as fighting for social justice.

I was prepared to share a snarky comment about “Landslide” having been written 47 years previously about the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
But...
Then I read her post. Because it was prompted by her direct connection to someone living there, and because she was coming from a place of sympathy, I am actually touched. I was initially confused about how the 9/11 reference fit but I now see where was going, and the Hitler analogy is apt.

If she really cared she would not be tweeting but sending money to assist refugees. Hashtags and tweets don't do anything. As scary as this is, thank goodness our Putin puppet is gone because he was destroying NATO. Europe and the world is more united than ever. Its about time the world throws Putin a punch after decades of oppression, murdering political opponents home and abroad, invading sovereign countries, exporting misinformation, and hacking elections. This is what you get when 20 years of sitting on your hands does to a brutal dictator. The death march to Kiev continues.
Sorry, not impressed with a tweet.

We sleep in our beds at night in peace. Imagine packing what you can into a suitcase and fleeing. If you are a male, you say goodbye to your family to stay and fight and most likely die. Family pets cant fit on trains so they are left abandoned to die. You know you are a monster when neutral countries who stayed neutral in the Nazi era and sending arms and support to Ukraine. Any American that sides with Putin is anti-American because the first rule of Putin is to destroy our freedom and democracy. Putin is now threatening the world with nuclear weapons. I like what she did for 9/11 when she was on tour. She would buy firefighters food outside her hotel. She visited Water Reed after the wars. She has power to organize and send some money. But as the Bible says the best charity is anonymous so maybe she did something. I don't remember any Katrina charity but she did write a song ;)
I don't like to judge celebrities on charitable donations because you don't know if they do anything secretly and don't need the media to cover it. I do draw the line when a performer asks their fans to do something but they don't partake in the contributions. In the early 80s when the steel mills were closing around Pittsburgh, Bruce Springsteen would ask fans to bring can goods to the show for the food banks. He also would give the Pittsburgh food banks $10,000. $10k was a sizeable contribution in 1984 (not counting what his fans gave). He honored his fans by also contributing.
The summer of 1998 was a brutal dry summer. The everglades were on fire in South Florida. Heavy smoke limited visibility for only a few miles. All of south Florida reeked of a forest fire. Stevie's Enchanted tour was in full swing. The local radio station interviewed Stevie and the fires were brought up. Stevie mentioned the fire at her house and is the scariest thing for her. The radio station wanted to create a donation site at her concert. Her fans ended up donating a measly $1800 at the show for people impacted by the fires. Since she agreed to ask for donations from the stage and on the radio station, I thought it was appropriate for her to donate as well. I don't think that happened.

Her most recent post on Ukraine/Putin makes her seem as unhinged as Putin. "The ghosts are coming for you Mr. Putin" WTF??? The man is as soul-less as they come. If her record people had any clue, they would have released the song the same time Stevie sent her gift to the soldiers in Kuwait. It would have preceded the release of Timespace and gotten some airplay. It would not have been a huge hit but enough plays to make it a known song. Then people could have had more interest in Timespace. By the time Timespace was released it was the fall. The tour was over and the welcome home parades were a distant memory. She missed her mark on her dedication.

I put Desert Angel, Soldier's Angel, New Orleans all in a category of mine- enjoyed them at the time, no real lasting memory or endurance on my playlists. All songs came long after the time period they were meant to capture which was a huge marketing mistake. This does highlight an incredibly frustrating point of being a Mac and Stevie fan is such poor timing in the latter career vs impeccable timing on the classic albums. My case in point- reliable two year spreads between albums and tours became spotty after Mirage and Tango, which spelled the end of the classic lineup until 97, 2015 etc and then the other collapse in 2018. While they did record the swan song under Buck McVie, the ball dropping after the Dance and then sputtering through the Say You Will period effectively ended my interest in following them on the road. I won't even touch 2018 :distress:

Desert Angel did not belong on a greatest hits. The song is an embarrassment and a skipper. Greatest Hits albums should not have bad songs on them. It was a wasted space. She should of put After Glitter Fades or Nightbird on the album instead. Those songs were actual top 40 hits. Loves a Hard Game to play should of been left off too.

I dont disagree with what you say. However Stevie did not want to do a greatest hits package. She fought her record company and that is why its not called "Greatest Hits." She purposely put songs like Beauty and The Beast on it, a song she is proud of that many did not get to hear. Clearly her record company was worried her hit making machine was churning to a halt. TOSOTM was considered dismal in regards to sales. They made her embrace Jon Bon Jovi, etc. Timespace is final result of:
1. A record company being greedy and pushing for a Greatest Hits album (Note: at the time artists who put out Greatest Hits packages were considered washed up).
2. Stevie fighting the record company for creative control that she could put her own touch on it.
3. Stevie yielding and agreeing to sing Jon Bon Jovi and Poison songs.
4. Stevie wanting to put a fresh and new "current" her own material on it.
If Sometimes Its A Bitch was the first single from OSTOTM it would have charted. Bon Jovi's limelight was so strong in 1989. By 1991, the grunge music was the current trend. Her record company was behind the trends. At least when Heart was marketed in the mid 80s, it worked because that Vixen look was the trend. Her reps were behind the times. I wonder what a Stevie Nirvana collaboration would have sounded like. Smells like a Welsch Witch

I’m glad “Sometimes It’s a Bitch” and “Love’s a Hard Game” are on TIME SPACE. In both instances, the conviction of her voice transforms generic songs into something distinctive. She believes what she sings. So, even if Modern Records might have forced certain collaborations upon her, she made the most of them.

Hi Aleuzzi- Back when Timespace was released, I liked anything and everything Stevie did- she could do no wrong in my chiffon covered eyes. Oh my how that has changed with age and the benefit of hindsight. After the couple of Petty covers early in her solo career, Stevie really, I mean really, needed to give up the idea of doing cover songs. So many terrible choices left excellent songs lingering in the "vault" with many still there to this day. Even 24 K which was a vault album, featured absolutely dreadful covers. Bitch and Hard Game are in the same realm nowadays- dreadful songs given up by popular artists of the day which contributed to the idea that Stevie could no longer write a great hit song. Don't get me started on Cry Wolf and I still need someone :(

I do agree with you that Cry Wolf and Blue Eyes (I still miss someone) are her worst covers. I hate them all from Talk To Me, Some Become Strangers, Just Like A Woman, etc. Cry Wolf was done by every B list artist and even a few A list ones like Laura Branigan.

Actually her worst "other persons" song is Everyday. That song is nails down a chalkboard for me. Its cut from the same cloth as Talk To Me. Bubble gum pop, shot sentence verse, rinse and repeat chorus.
Part of the allure of Stevie Nicks is her epic writing. Her words. Her emotions. Her descriptions. When that is missing, its pretty much an empty shell of shrill.

J Brown- Especially "find yourself somebody new"... I do get the appeal some of us would see in the song- I enjoyed it at the time as well, as I did with everything she did. The point is around her doing covers and the poor choices in material. I will add that this only applies to Rock a Little onwards. Prior to that she was always delightful.

I really hate Everyday, but because of the way she sings it. Same thing with Cry Wolf- another song by her I hate. It’s not the lyrics that bother me, the songs just suck, IMO. $tevie could get a PhD from Dolly University. I'm not even much of a Dolly fan, but she does it right.

Selflessly donates her time and money to charities.
Can still sing.

Henley loves Dolly.
I love watching video of Dolly playing Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, which Stevie hasn't done. She's played British Festivals but as opening act for Tom and Rod.
Dolly played the Legend Slot at Glasto.

Warren Zevon wrote Reconsider Me. Jimmy really wanted her to put it on the record (I think Rock a Little ) She wasn't having it. He was one of the great song writers of our generation.
I always thought it was weird that Fleetwood Mac doesn't play "Werewolves of London."

I had the pleasure of seeing Dolly Parton back in, I don’t know, maybe 2017? Anyway, she put on a great show and it was over 2 hours- she even had a 15 minute intermission! But like Stevie, Christine, and every other performer that started out in the 1970s (or earlier), Dolly’s voice isn’t as good as it used to be, and she did that whisper/singing thing a LOT. But we didn’t care because it was Dolly mother-effing Parton! Now I remember, it was almost definitely 2017 because she even mentioned the turmoil that was going on with Trump as President, but in such a way as to make it non-political! Not an easy feat. She even commented that by using a drum machine in her band instead of a drummer, she was saving $70,000!
I would encourage anyone who’s ever considered seeing Dolly live to do it.

I am not a fan of her music but I do love her. I thought she was incredible in 9 to 5 especially since she was not an actress. That role could have backfired on her. She was so genuine and natural. I also remember back in the days (early 80s) when HBO was big on concerts. She did an HBO concert recorded in London and it was very entertaining. She as funny on stage telling stories, etc. She also donated a bunch of money for research to develop the Covid vaccine and was one of the first to get it to demonstrate to the public. I dont think there is anyone on earth that has anything bad to say about Dolly. She is pure love.

She has a song called the Secondhand Store or something like that, and it basically compares how having an affair with a married man made her feel secondhand- it’s a very clever song. She also has some surprisingly dark themes in her lyrics, but counters that with bouncy, catchy music. And ditto your comments about 9 to 5, that could have gone so wrong but it went so right.

I'm glad we've mentioned Dolly as she is what I really had hoped Stevie would be at this stage. Dolly has had, and still has, an extraordinary career built largely on her humanity and her treasure trove of great songwriting. She essentially is the Betty White of the music business, and it is almost impossible to say anything negative about her. Stevie on the other hand, even her biggest fans here, guys like me who thought she could do no wrong and felt sorry for her when she screwed up, have so much to criticize it almost drowns out her amazing achievements during the '73-'83 creative period. Since then, beautiful songs have been few and far between, she has all but abandoned creativity and passed on an opportunity 25 years ago heck, even while making In Your Dreams, to become the Dolly Parton of rock. Instead, she has become more like Baby Jane Hudson, a self parody, relying on decades old achievements to carry her. Too bad Tom Petty didn't give her an intervention in 1998 when she shone so very brightly off the heals of the Dance and into her wonderful Enchanted period. Since then, its been more :eek:than :D

I've never met her, but I have several friends in Nashville who have. They say she's exactly what you see on TV. There's no "bitch behind the scenes". She's as open and friendly as what we see on the media.
Off topic, but BW mentioned her saving 70K, by using a drum machine. Reminds me of a funny story I heard about Canya F*cker(Tanya Tucker) a couple weeks ago. (back story - she's a known HO, thus the name change). So anyway, she offered a bass player, "I'll pay you 50K for this tour, or I'll pay you 40K for this tour, and you can f*ck me any time you want". He said, "I'll take the 50K!" I love living in Nashville, and hanging out with all the touring musicians....that's where you get the behind the scenes stories!

It's really a true story. She's apparently a full blown sex addict. I've known two guys that have played in her band. Also a complete coke head. My friend's wife was going to leave him, if he couldn't get off the blow. He had to quit Tanya's band. Said that was the ONLY way to get off the blow, because it's a constant thing in that circle.

dear lord that sounds like what some of Stevie's touring musicians have said.
Even Benmont once said, "I never knew there was that much coke in the world" until he worked with her (or something very close to that)
here it is:
In Warren Zanes’ 2015 book Petty: The Biography, keyboardist Tench offered another reason behind the appearance of “Make It Better": "The biggest picture there was we were all on a lot of coke. On the Long After Dark tour, I discovered how much cocaine there was in the world. And then I came home and went straight on tour with Stevie Nicks and, boy, did I discover how much cocaine there was in the world."

Dolly was good in Steel Magnolias as well.
I see that Dolly has also declined her RRHOF nomination as she feels "not worthy" for a rock n roll award.
Talk about a stark contrast with Dr Azoff's Monster.
Maybe Stevie still has a shot at a film career.
Any fans care to pen her a treatment on spec?

Why would Stevie need to remove her nomination to the RRHOF? She actually made successful rock albums. The most rock things Dolly has ever done was a Bee Gees song with Kenny Rogers and a bluegrass cover of "Stairway to Heaven."

Steve. You are so funny sometimes. I NEVER said Stevie should have removed her name from the RRHOF. Nowhere in this thread did I say that. The comparison was made between Stevie and Dolly which many pointed out there are few similarities except both are women singers. It was trending that day that Dolly being overly humble removed her name from consideration. I simply said that is another difference between them. Could you imagine Stevie removing herself if she was nominated with Pat Benatar and said she is too much competition and deserves to win? Probably not.
I don't know much about Dolly's career but I would imagine she has probably sold more records than Stevie. She even has a hugely successful amusement park which is something Stevie could never pull off. In any event, we all know Stevie only got into the RRHOF because Lindsey quit the band in 1987 which was the only reason Little Lies was a big hit.
Edit: I was curious so I did some research. Dolly has sold more than 100 million records worldwide. Stevie has sold 30 million. On this St Patrick's Day......Who's Your Paddy?

Dolly has had a few pop/rock hits besides Islands in the Stream. She also did 9 to 5, Baby I’m Burning, a cover of Great Balls of Fire, Two Doors Down, I Will Always Love You, and one of my personal favorites- Here You Come Again.
I agree Stevie had no reason to withdraw either one of her nominations. There are a ton of people I’m surprised have been inducted into the RRHOF, but I’m not going to say they didn’t earn the right just because I’m not a fan.

Are you talking about her song "The Bargain Store"? To my knowledge, she has never mentioned anything about that song having anything to do with an affair with a married man. She says it is about a woman finding love again after being emotionally damaged by a relationship. She explains all the metaphors such as "If you don't mind the merchandise is slightly used, with just a little mending it can be good as new", as being about having a little patience because my heart was broken etc. Interestingly enough she also told a story about how when the song first came out a lot of radio stations wouldn't play it because they thought it was suggestive and she was mortified because the song wasn't about sex at all. Dolly's words were that she had never meant it in any vulgar way. (I guess some folks out there just have their minds in the gutter all the time) That's awesome that you got to see her. I have never had a chance to and I think she is so talented and by all accounts a wonderful person as well. The total package.

Thank you Feather Blade! That was the song, and I’m embarrassed to admit my mind was in the gutter LOL! I was going by memory, so after reading your post I listened to her CD again and I agree with your interpretation. I think what threw me off was the way Dolly sings it- again, maybe my mind is in the gutter, but it sure seems sexual when she says “love is all you need to purchase all the merchandise/and I will guarantee you’ll be completely satisfied.” It seems like an innuendo but the rest of the lyrics definitely support what you said. I also heard her song We’ll Sing in the Sunshine,” another example of dark lyrics cushioned by upbeat music. She didn’t write it, but I suspect what attracted her to that song was the dichotomy of the lyrics and music.
Dolly said she’s considering releasing an album of rock songs, and I hope she does.
