This is just as tough as Bella Donna because its a perfect album but I wont cop out. Go Your Own Way is such a highlight for me and is the best song on the album IMHO. However I would have to go with Side 2. Stevie's best song GDW and Chris's best song YMLF are on this side plus The Chain and I cant have a 1977 Fleetwood Mac without Oh Daddy so side 2 for me.

Firstly, thank you for not including Silver Springs, since it WASN'T on Rumours.

Just like Bella Donna, this is really a toss up.

But since my favorite song Oh Daddy is on side 2, Imma gonna vote for side 1.:p

Side two for me, Rumours was just getting warmed up by the end of Songbird for what was in store in the Chain, the best band collaboration of the entire history of Fleetwood Mac, crediting all 5 members. Fun to now know most of the history of the creation of that masterpiece of song craft. Only to be followed up by Christine McVie's best pop song, it never gets old, sounds just as good on the radio in 2021 as it did in '77. The wonderfully written, arranged and sung I Don't. Want to Know, Rumours overlooked gem and Stevie and Lindsey sing the song brilliantly. Oh Daddy, I'm in the camp that loves it and wow what a treat live. Finally there's Gold Dust Woman, a tour de force live for decades, had its glory captured in every "witch" way of wonderful to gloriously end Rumours. Stevie Nicks would write songs of equal calibre afterwards, but none stood the test of time and worked so well on the stage as GDW. I know it's hard not to mention a single track on side one as each are amazing, but side two just takes this classic album to the stratosphere.

And then... there's Silver Springs, and not to upset Homer :D still one of the best songs the band ever did and Stevie Nicks best composition of her long career.

It's a damned shame Silver Springs wasn't on Rumours, but it wasn't.

Say it! It wasn't on Rumours!

You can't rewrite history, try as you might.

And IDWTK is a fantastic song. $tevie's an idiot for hating it.

I love I Don't Want to Know, should've been single #5 its an outstanding song and should not have been so overlooked over the band's many tours.

I'll second that. Silver Springs was NOT on Rumours, and thank God.
Silver Springs is a great old song. But Rumours is absolutely perfect how it is.
I'll take side 2. Songbird has me in the clutches and then The Chain starts up, and it's all a beautiful ride from there.

If you'd hypothetically asked me in 1977 (I'd have been 3) I'd have said side 1. Objectively its probably better overall.
But at this moment in time Dreams and Don't Stop are a little boring for me.
Whereas, Oh Daddy and Gold Dust Woman I almost discover something new every single time I hear them.
I vote side 2.

I don't think she hates it but I think she realized what a gem Silver Springs was and it was a not as good replacement in her opinion. It was a burnt offering and that is why she probably has stigma towards the song. IDWTK "fit" better because of time. IMHO that should never be the standard for making an album. I really like IDWTK and its fine but Silver Springs is still the better song.

You are just siding with your hero Mick because he yanked Silver Springs.

BTW Mr Eagles. Many thought Hotel California was too long too including Felder. Yet the drummer in THAT band kept the song on the album and even named the album after it. Don did not sacrifice a great song because another one "fit."
Would you edit Go Your Own Way because the guitar part is too long? I don't think so. And would you dare say any of this to Bob Dylan? I don't think so.

Side two for certain. Less singles but more expansiveness. GYOW is essential but all of the songs on side 2 are remarkable and perfectly sequenced.

This one is super hard but I love Go Your Own Way wayyyyy too much to not choose side of 1.

I'm $tevie's opposite. I love IDWTK. It's the first guitar solo I ever learned to play.

Silver Bed Springs belonged as a B side.

Do you have any idea how much money was made by Felder, Henley and all for that OPUS? Please don't compare SS to HC! Dog turds to caviar!!!!

Would you remove Oh Daddy for Silver Springs?

No, I wouldn't.

I don't HATE Oh Daddy, it's just my least favorite song on my FAVORITE album of all time. The album that created my direction in life. They can't all be your favorite song...

You know I don't like snoozefests. Beautiful Child blows, as does Storms. Silver Springs ain't exactly a cocaine dance, either! Gimme a damned beat!!!

Plus, she even says, if there's a fool around, it's got to be her. So you people stop blaming Homie.

“IDWK” was the RIGHT choice for the record. The tempo, the tonal color, the blend of voices, which gives side two the right amount of pep and masculine presence before the album closes with the two iconic women features.

I also believe Stevie’s vocal on the original “Silver Springs” was underwhelming. She needed to grow into her own song. When she sings it in 1997, the change is stunning—and the song truly comes into its own as a classic. Before that it was just a pleasant, well-arranged B-side.

And thankfully “Oh Daddy” can and never shall be removed! It is a classic, among the finest moments on the record.

I would never mess with Rumours and Oh Daddy is one of the best musical tracks since Why.
I like IDWTK and it fits fine. We have heard the flow a million times so we cant get it out of our heads.
If I went back in time and pretended all the songs were new, I am not sure I would have axed Silver Springs because of time limits. I dislike the rationalization that because it was performed on the Dance that it makes up for it being left off Rumours. That is a bridge too far for me. It still would have been a discovery for the casual fans. Silver Springs was so good that radio stations would play it many years before the Dance ever came out. I do realize that in 1976, the band really had no duds. Sleeping Angel could have been on Rumours too. That 1976 demo is incredible. What it highlights is how good Rumours is when Silver Springs and Sleeping Angel are your "left overs." Its like Gold and Braid being left off Bella Donna and one of the "left overs". Really.

Plus, Oh Daddy demonstrates that the haunting tones of Fleetwood Mac did not just come from Stevie Nicks, those tones were already there.

There, in fact, well before Christine and Bob Welch.

Go Your Own Way of course but side 1 is the full soap opera glory of the album — it is greater than the sum of its parts

True, but Welch/Kirwan/McVie really started that snowball rollin' large.

To me, Why is a haunting song. Not to mention the many Welch tunes.
And yes, Man of the World, and a few other Peter selections.

I do love the murky, often mystical nature of their 1971-74 albums. This is partially because of their openness to different styles. It is one way in which their supposed inconsistency worked in their favor. “Keep On Going” is the eeriest, coolest tune. As is, of course, “Hypnotized.” But then, in very different ways, so are “Prove Your Love” and “Bad Loser.”

But for me the most mystical moments in the band’s history belong to Green. Black Magic Woman, Trying So Hard to Forget, Man of the World, World Keep On Turning, and most of all—Before the Beginning, which transports me in a way only the loneliest, angstiest songs can do—like Billie Hiliday’s “Strange Fruit”—or Christine’s “Oh Daddy.” It’s mystical without trying to be.

Lest not forget the Bare Trees album cover. You listen to the music and stare at the album cover like the old days. So beautiful, so beautiful....

To fully appreciate just how good the 69-74 period was, the latest boxset is a must own. You will be treated to amazing sounds you never thought existed. So many treats, hard to mention them all but my personal fav is Good Things Come to Those Who Wait, the outtake from MTM. It sounds like it was recorded yesterday it's so crisp and clear, the two voices mesh like the fabric of a 1000 count bedsheet.
