View Full Version : Mick Fleetwood Open to Reunion With Lindsey Buckingham - Rolling Stone

With the concert industry shut down for the foreseeable future and his bandmates spread to various spots around the planet, Mick Fleetwood truly doesn’t know what the future holds for Fleetwood Mac. But that hasn’t stopped the drummer from looking ahead and sketching out a possible farewell tour in his mind.

“I’m very aware that we’ve never played that card,” he tells Rolling Stone on the phone from his Hawaii home. “I think the vision for me, and I think it would be hugely appropriate, is that we actually say ‘this is goodbye’ and go out and actually do that. That has always been my vision and I’m a flatly confident that we can do that. We owe it to the fans.”

The comments appear to contradict Christine McVie’s recent statements to the BBC where she said that bassist John McVie was “a little bit frail” and no longer had “the heart for it.” She also said, “If we do it, it’ll be without John and without Stevie [Nicks], I think…I’m getting a bit old for it now. I don’t know if I can get myself back into it.”

McVie later walked back the comments, and Fleetwood says they shouldn’t be taken literally. “I think she got out of bed on the wrong side that day,” he says with a laugh. “She meant to say, ‘We’ve done so much. I don’t know whether or not we can keep going.’ Anything other than that, she can speak for herself. But I can assure you we are alive and well. And she has no regrets. She just got caught up in whatever she was saying and she also felt she had been misunderstood.”

Christine McVie also said that John McVie was focused largely on sailing the world on his boat, but Fleetwood says that’s never once stopped him from participating in band activities. “He’s always more interested in going sailing until you put it in front of his face,” he says. “He’s so not caught up in the drama of the workings of the band. That has always been my world. I’ve never not known John to answer the call and say, ‘Show me the gig and I’ll plug my bass in.'”

There hasn’t been any reason for McVie to plug his bass in since Fleetwood Mac ended their last world tour in November 2019. It was their first tour since parting ways with Lindsey Buckingham and bringing in Neil Finn of Crowded House and Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to fill the void. “It was a massive, really lovely world tour that was beyond successful in every way,” says Fleetwood. “And a happy tour.”

They initially planned on booking about eight stadium shows with other big artists the following year, but the pandemic made that impossible. Last July, Fleetwood Mac founding guitarist Peter Green died just months after Fleetwood staged a massive tribute concert in his honor at London’s Palladium.

It was a devastating blow to Fleetwood, but it also caused him to get back in touch with Buckingham after two years of bitter estrangement. “I’ve really enjoyed being re-connected with Lindsey, which has been gracious and open,” says Fleetwood. “And both of us have been beautifully honest about who we are and how we got to where we were.”

The reconciliation leads to an obvious question: Might Buckingham come back into Fleetwood Mac for the farewell tour that Fleetwood is plotting out in his mind? “Strange things can happen,” says Fleetwood. “I look at Fleetwood Mac as a huge family. Everyone plays an important role in our history, even someone like [early Seventies] guitarist Bob Welch, who was huge and sometimes gets forgotten. Lindsey’s position in Fleetwood Mac will, for obvious reasons, never been forgotten, as it should never be forgotten.”

“My vision of things happening in the future is really far-reaching,” he continues. “Would I love to think that [reunion] could happen? Yeah. I’d love to think that all of us could be healed, and also respect the people who are in the band, Neil Finn and Michael Campbell.”

The major impediment to a reunion with Buckingham is his relationship with Stevie Nicks, which had been strained for decades and finally reached a breaking point in early 2018. No reunion tour can proceed without the two of them arriving at some sort of detente. “I can’t speak for the dynamic with Stevie and him,” says Fleetwood. “I don’t even need to protect it. It’s so known that they’re chalk and cheese in so many ways, and yet not.”

For now, Fleetwood is just happy he’s back on speaking terms with Buckingham. “I know for a fact that I intend to make music and play again with Lindsey,” he says. “I would love that. It doesn’t have to be in Fleetwood Mac. And Fleetwood Mac is such a strange story. All the players in the play are able to talk and speak for themselves. Somehow, I would love the elements that are not healed to be healed. I love the fantasy that we could cross that bridge and everyone could leave with creative, holistic energy, and everyone could be healed with grace and dignity.”

Just wishful think on Mick's part.
Stevie- solo work through 2022. Lindsey???...over her dead body.
John- probably too old, no matter what Mick thinks.
Lindsey- I hope he doesn't give it the time of the day.

Buckingham, Fleetwood, McVie- I guess I could go for that, but realistically I can't even see that ever happening now.

As somebody said in another thread, Mick leeching off Lindsey on a Lindsey solo tour or (Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood) is about the best he could hope for.

It is my theory that THIS was the plan all along. Give Lindsey and Stevie (who hate each other) some time apart, Lindsey time to do his solo work, and enlist Neil and Mike (who were just sitting around) as nothing more than hired hands.

Next, come back with a large scale "Farewell Tour" featuring the "Rumours" lineup for the final cash grab.

All was going perfectly as planned UNTIL a pesky heart attack and a global pandemic altered the course of the universe.

Rest assured, the "Farewell Tour" WITH the "Rumours" lineup will almost certainly happen, even if on a smaller scale with less dates.

There is no doubt in my mind. PR representative and managers are behind all of this.

Wow.. he's giving Stevie the Playboy Interview treatment.

With this interview the public knows: a reunion with Lindsey is up to Stevie.

That is if the public knows who Lindsey is:laugh:

If Stevie permits LB to perform with them again, they'd have to make new music with Mike and Neil if it's going to be a 6 member band.

If they're only going to play the old songs, would Lindsey and Neil trade vocals on Tusk and Oh Diane? Or does Neil sing the Welch, Kirwan, Green songs?

These guys never cease to amaze me. What the hell kind of comment is Chris woke up on the wrong side of the bed about? I believe she knows that John is done and Stevie is done and she is pretty much done also.

I would love to see an album and farewell tour, however they want to do that. Maybe a pay per view event instead of a real tour, but Stevie has a lot of groveling to do and I don't think she would even try until her projects are finished.

Wishful thinking Mick but I don't know, this one might be a bit of a reach.

****yawn****

This is so boring because its so predictable. You can activate old threads from years ago that predicted this was going to happen. I've been saying it for years. Mick realizes a reunion tour would spark enough interest to pad his wallet one more time with meet and greets. I also believe the legacy aspect hit him as well. 6 months ago, he was adamant that Lindsey was never rejoining. I laughed at that too. The sad part is poor Lindsey has been offering this olive branch since 2018.
Now this is the part that is not a coincidence. The interview with RS comes almost immediately after Chris said the Mac was pretty much done. Chris tried a mop up job but that was not good enough for the boss. Mick is trying to put the pieces back together that he shattered. The worst part is he definitely touched base with Stevie to make sure she would be ok with a farewell tour. I think she got fan push back and she realizes it was all for nothing but big ego.

So predictable that its not even worth posting. Biddy's undies are not selling. He needs one last huge cash grab.

Seriously though, I would much rather see a Lindsey solo concert or Buck/Vie to a greatest hits farewell. I dont want to hear Gypsy "hey Hey" again. Chris could barely play last tour. Now she will barely be able to sing in 2 years. Mick is trying to lay the groundwork and I have always said it will happen. I just don't think it will be a monster world tour. I bet its like 30 US Dates. It will be a typical Mac setlist that we will all flame. But Stevie and Lindsey will sing "I dont want to know" as well as Silver Springs.

Is anyone writing this down?

Exactly. Christine spoke honestly and Mick panicked at the thought of losing potential revenue. He’ll do and say anything to keep the FM flag flying.

I like the idea of a pay-per-view event.

I love the idea, but I think the days of a long farewell tour have passed. How about something ..... a little different? If I'm going to dream about it, here's mine:

- Keep the tour short, something do-able. 12-15 dates (maybe 20 on the outside)
- Smaller Venues + STREAM (pay-per-view opportunity here)
- Have 1-2 days break between shows
- Keep the show length at 2 hours max (90 minutes would be ok)
- Forget trying to recreate the studio sound. Scale songs down, maybe a new arrangement to give them a fresh feel. Even go acoustic. "Gypsy" acoustic, like 2000? Even "Stand Back" had an interesting arrangement during the 1994 rehearsals (scaled down in one version, full band in others)
- Throw in a nod to the deluxe releases. Perform something simple, like "Cool Water" from the Mirage deluxe set.

I can dream!

and enlist Neil and Mike (who were just sitting around) as nothing more than hired hands.

Huh? Neil was literally about to go on stage when Mick called. Neil had just finished the album with Liam and Mike had just finished the Dirty Knobs album. I get being angry about Lindsey getting sacked, but I don’t get the need to just make stuff up about Neil and Mike. Anyway, it’s clear they’re still part of the equation going forward.

Rest assured, the "Farewell Tour" WITH the "Rumours" lineup will almost certainly happen, even if on a smaller scale with less dates.

I’m not convinced, though it’s Fleetwood Mac so I wouldn’t rule it out. The upcoming offshoots will be interesting, though.

Exactly. Christine spoke honestly and Mick panicked at the thought of losing potential revenue. He’ll do and say anything to keep the FM flag flying.

See, I’m not sure any of them are being completely honest. I’m skeptical and wouldn’t be surprised if they were intentionally creating drama in the press. It’s like there’s one or two vague interviews coming out every month. Stevie should be popping up in two to three weeks.

For having not toured in 15 years, Christine sounded great in 2014-2015. She sounded good in 2017 too. Idk what happened in that year, but she sounded like she was struggling in 2018-2019. I’d love a final Rumours farewell tour, but Christine and John are pushing 80. The others are well into their mid 70s too. And with the pandemic, there’s no telling.

Neil and Mike will almost certainly NOT be involved in the "Farewell Tour" in any shape or form. Their time in Fleetwood Mac was nothing more than being temporary hired hands. I believe that all parties involved knew from the very beginning that the presence of Mike and Neil was a one tour deal.

Thank your for acknowledging that. You rock!

We've all been had. While it is true that Stevie and Lindsey don't like each other very much and the Music Cares argument really happened, I believe that much of this drama was created and fueled by a PR and management team. Mike and Neil were temporary hired hands and everyone knew it from the beginning.

Had it not been for Lindsey's major health scare AND Covid19 destroying the live music and touring market, we would already have a "Farewell Tour" with the "Rumours" lineup in the early stages with tickets going on sale soon.

There is 100% no doubt in my mind that we will see the Rumours lineup reunite. Due to their advanced aged, the farewell tour will be majorly scaled back - perhaps 40 US dates only (no world tour). Someone else mentioned they could shorten the length of the show, which is certainly a possibility.

So, get ready! I can already hear the 15 minute long speeches from Stevie about "forgiveness", "healing", "so special to me", "known him since I was 16", blah blah blah. Lindsey chimes in with a speech about "growth and perspective - big machine" blah blah blah. Hell, they can wheel John up there in a walker for 40 US dates. It's on!

This is all so very sad but also typical. If they could rehearse and actually get to sounding good again, I think a one off show kind of like Zeppelin did would be the way to go. I don't want to watch Chris up there croaking and pretending to play when she is damn near 80 years old. Go out with some dignity. The time to do a long farewell tour has passed.

Huh? Neil was literally about to go on stage when Mick called. Neil had just finished the album with Liam and Mike had just finished the Dirty Knobs album. I get being angry about Lindsey getting sacked, but I donÂ’t get the need to just make stuff up about Neil and Mike. Anyway, itÂ’s clear theyÂ’re still part of the equation going forward.

I was speaking figuratively when using the phrase "sitting around". While I'm aware that both musicians had projects in the works, we both know that Neil Finn and Mike Campbell made ****loads more money playing 88 dates of 18,000 seat arenas with Fleetwood Mac than they would have with solo work.

To clarify, yes both men are busy. Neil is scheduled to play The Round House in London later this year - it holds 1,700 people. The Dirty Knobs are serving as an opening act for Chris Stapleton in mid-sized venues.

Now, I know that Mike Campbell probably didn't need the money. I can't safely say the same for Finn. Whatever the case, Finn and Campbell's days in Fleetwood Mac are over. I would pay money down the road if I'm wrong - there is no equation that includes them moving forward with this band. I don't think it was ever a question. Finn and Campbell were called in to fill a hole and chose to make some serious money for a tour with Fleetwood Mac - then run back to their little solo projects with deeper pockets.

Mike and Neil were temporary hired hands and everyone knew it from the beginning.

Except there’s no indication that anything’s changed. If anything, Mick has gone out of his way to bring them up.

Mick said that he and Lindsey will work together again, though maybe not in the context of Fleetwood Mac, which was obvious months ago (and something I could have told you would eventually happened).

There is 100% no doubt in my mind that we will see the Rumours lineup reunite.

100%? Please, even I very slowly scroll through the news every morning when I get up...

The last two years have been brutal for rock.

So, get ready! I can already hear the 15 minute long speeches from Stevie about "forgiveness",

Exactly why I see Campbell and Finn staying in regardless of whether or not Lindsey comes back. I mean, if Lindsey comes back, what better reason for Stevie to sing “Heart of the Matter,” which Mike Campbell co-wrote?

Where does one even begin with this horse pucky? He isn't worried about the fans, he's worried about the money. "We owe it to ourselves to go out with as much filthy lucre as possible". And, 'We've never played that card'?? You fully intended to play it for the previous tour until it derailed.

This is such typical Mick word salad. I would bet any amount of money the bit about "she can speak for herself" came from Stevie or someone in Stevie's camp. We all know that Stevie cannot abide anyone speaking for her or controlling the narrative other than herself. That to me sounds like a Stevie smack delivered via Mick. And he seems fine delivering it because he doesn't want to lose that moola. Poor Chris, her standing really has fallen within the band; she is no longer a force to reckoned with, she's a player who needs to do as she is told. Sad.

This seems to imply that the loss of the money from the stadium shows and the PG tribute concert were the reasons that he decided to reach out to LB. "Hmmm.... maybe there's an opportunity there"

“I’ve really enjoyed being re-connected with Lindsey, which has been gracious and open,” says Fleetwood. “And both of us have been beautifully honest about who we are and how we got to where we were.”

We finally sat down and admitted it was all bulls*** and it was all about Stevie playing us off against each other. I of course went with Stevie and the money. Duh. And Lindsey knows how weak I am, and has decided to play Mr. Magnanimous and forgive me.

Is he equating LB's role in FM to that of Bob's role in FM? An important part of their 'history' not to be forgotten, but not really part of the present...So..what does that mean for a tour? He comes out for a guest spot, like when Billy and Rick were in the band?

“My vision of things happening in the future is really far-reaching,” he continues. “Would I love to think that [reunion] could happen? Yeah. I’d love to think that all of us could be healed, and also respect the people who are in the band, Neil Finn and Michael Campbell.”

Ref. above comment. They're "in" the band, and LB's in the past, but not to be forgotten. So is it a Rumours5 reunion farewell he's thinking of or, again, a FM tour with LB guest solo spot on a song or two?? I would lose all respect for Linds if he does this.

That is exactly what he's done for years now, "protect" (translation, lie about) the dynamic between S&L. But the lies failed and "it's so known" now that even he's finally given up?

For now, Fleetwood is just happy he’s back on speaking terms with Buckingham. “I know for a fact that I intend to make music and play again with Lindsey,” he says. “I would love that. It doesn’t have to be in Fleetwood Mac.

This sounds like Mick playing on a LB solo album or show.....but then.....

This was blown up on the last tour so what, exactly, has changed?? Maybe LB has softened :( but has Madame? Really?? :distress::laugh: If they're going to wait on convincing Stevie, the only bridge that is going to be crossed is one of them going over the rainbow bridge. Lindsey almost did and John's come pretty close. Mick continues to live in the delusion there's lots of time left. Chris is the only one with the balls to admit there isn't... and they've made sure to smack her down.

Let’s take that down a few notches.

If you were worth $100,000, had three adult children, and had a choice between playing in front of 200 people or 4000, and whatever you made wouldn’t change your quality of life, but could really pad your kids, you seriously wouldn’t do it?

Because a two hour show for 2000 people is the same as 20,000 people.

Except Lindsey reached out to Mick, not the other way around. Using your logic, why would Lindsey, who has never had a Top 20 album or a Top 10 single without Mick, be the one to reach out?

We finally sat down and admitted it was all bulls*** and it was all about Stevie playing us off against each other. I of course went with Stevie and the money. Duh. And Lindsey knows how weak I am, and has decided to play Mr. Magnanimous and forgive me.

Probably exactly why Lindsey reached out to Mick after Peter died in the midst of a pandemic when it’s still not known when anyone is getting back out. Not like Lindsey ever needed the promotion.

Is he equating LB's role in FM to that of Bob's role in FM? An important part of their 'history' not to be forgotten, but not really part of the present...

As a creative entity, the present is as dead as Bob and has been for about as long.

Chalk and cheese. And yet not.

A friend of mine down in El Lay who knows some people in the industry just told me that Nicks is going to tour New Zealand with Neil because there is no covid there. I have no idea if there is any truth to it .It would not surprise me if she recruited Neil and greedy old Mick for her solo band .I believe that will happen before a Rumours five farewell tour. I just can't see that at this point. She truly hates Lindsey bitter old harridan that she is .

Recruit Neil for her solo band? Nah- he's massively revered in both Aus and NZ. That would be seen as rather offensive. The best she could hope for would be a joint billing.

“My vision of things happening in the future is really far-reaching,” he continues. “Would I love to think that [reunion] could happen? Yeah. I’d love to think that all of us could be healed, and also respect the people who are in the band, Neil Finn and Michael Campbell.”
In the unlikely case where Stevie tells Mick that she'll allow Lindsey to perform with FM again... These are the things I've arrived at upon reading "respect the people who are in the band, Neil Finn and Michael Campbell"

1) Lindsey as a special guest on a tour (not opening act) who comes out to do his songs and potentially Oh Well guitar duels with Mike and Neil

2) Mick tells Neil and Neale H. that they want to reunite the Classic Lineup and thank them for their service. Mike is kept (if he wants to) as the new second guitarist but still in his same spot on stage in front of the singers (or Taku if they keep percussion out front and not behind Mick). Mike also kept to make Stevie happy and have her TPATHB connection alive.

Question: Were Billy, Bekka, and Dave treated with respect and dignity when FM decided to do a Classic reunion in 97? I don't know if anything's been public on that. Just curious if Mick regrets how he dumped those three after being creative with them.

Lastly, an opinion: if Neil doesn't create new music with FM, I don't see the point in FM doing more shows with him and not a person who actually wrote a song with FM. May as well have Lindsey as the male vocalist so he can do songs from the records he did with FM.

Fleetwood Mac featuring Lindsey Buckingham.
Concert would begin with Mike and Neil in tow....no Lindsey

Lindsey would pop on stage to big build up from Mick, just like when Christine returned.......exit Mike and Neil.

Rumours five would perform The Chain, then Lindsey would do Big Love and NGBA as solos.
Stevie would then sidle up to him, from the darkness, and do all that deep bowing lark she does.
Together they would do flamin’ Landslide and the wonderful Say goodbye to you.
The three from Rumours Five would then rejoin on the stage and they’d do NGBA.

Lindsey would exit stage right, Mike and Neil would reappear

All of this is Mick word spin to get one last giant bag of money.

He wants the Rumours 5 on stage for one farewell tour. This has nothing to do with respect for Peter Green era Fleetwood Mac, Bob Welch, Mike Campbell, and Neil Finn. None of whom nor their catalog of music make any tangible difference in the economic value of another tour. Just as making new music with Lindsey has zero positive impact on any potential payday.

The lure for the masses (not the small community that is The Ledge) is a return and final farewell of the Rumours 5 and those 5 getting on stage and playing their live staples for the last time ever. And those kinds of paying fans aren't going to sit through 1969 era Fleetwood Mac, some Crowded House song, or too many Tusk rarities.

To get that last payday done, Mick has made up with Lindsey. (after ignoring his entreaties for 2 years) Now he needs Stevie to feel the pressure to dull the sword and hear Lindsey's apology and then she says they both feel like they woke up from a bad dream, it's been their destiny to sing together since they were 16, and have a nice public cry, all the way to the bank. None of this gets done unless they get Stevie on board. She is the revenue driver and the hook to fill stadium seats, because for the last time ever, it's the Rumours 5.

I'm not understanding... what would Lindsey be apologizing for?
Not letting Stevie suggest songs to play in Fleetwood Mac shows from 2003-2017?

I feel the only thing that would make them more money on a tour than last time is if they actually used the word Rumours in the tour marketing.

I have no evidence to show that just saying Lindsey's back would make them more money. If they says the Rumours lineup is back, that word Rumours gets people's attention.

It's something that's never been discussed but I doubt Mick has any regrets about reuniting the Rumours group over potentially doing another album with Billy, Bekka and Dave. I've never heard or read anything from Bekka or Billy about any bitterness at the time. I'm sure there was to some degree but I think they also understood and accepted their "place" in the band's history. Both have always spoke glowingly about their time in Fleetwood Mac and seem to be grateful that they have a role in the band's legacy. It's a shame that that period is looked on as being a "dark time" as opposed to a change that gave the band a different flavor. All three are great talents who deserve more respect.

I don't see any kind of a reunion working out with ALL 5 because quite frankly, I think this PR mess is going to cause a giant riff between Mick and Stevie. Mick stood by her all throughout the 2018 drama and now he's putting her in the hot seat as the lone person holding up a reunion. Not going to sit well with her. Especially after she was just getting used to calling all the shots.

Bekka & Billy were already planning their duo record when Mick disbanded Fleetwood Mac. Dave Mason was going to sue, although he said that the Rumours reunion was inevitable.

Remember, when that lineup was put together, Mo and Lenny were still at Warners and The Eagles hadn’t done Hell Freezes Over. There was no frame of reference for the Rumours lineup reuniting beyond a one-off for an incoming president. By the time of its release, Mo and Lenny were out, Christine retired, Bekka & Billy were heading to Nashville, and Mick was working with Lindsey. Time got buried because the new brass at Warner’s didn’t want to waste resources promoting a new Fleetwood Mac when they could do the big reunion.

Billy:

'The last gig I did with Fleetwood Mac was a corporate gig on New Years eve 1995. I forget what company hired us but we played in the 20,000 theatre at MGM. That's the night we knew it was over, they were going to tour again with the original group back together. Fleetwood Mac was offered millions and millions to work The Dance album and that's when they put together The Dance tour. I knew it was coming, because I knew the managers well. I warned Bekka Bramlett and Dave Mason and I guess they didnt believe me. It was a big shock to them. To make matters worse, Bekka's manager knew that our stint in Fleetwood Mac was about to end and he did not tell her. At the time, she was buying a million dollar house. That was sad and not nice; they should have at least let her know when they knew she was purchasing a house. I knew it was going to happen eventually, but I was still a little hurt by it. I had given up my solo career to become a member of Fleetwood Mac and so had Bekka. I had given up a lot to be with them. I felt a little used. Thats when it ended for me.

Our attorneys said we had an incredible lawsuit against Fleetwood Mac for the dates we had expected to play but Bekka, Dave and I decided not to sue. I was still the biggest Fleetwood Mac fan in the world.

Bekka and I had our own gig dates on the books already so we decided to do our own thing. In '97 we went to Nashville and made a record. We kept it quiet because we didn't know what our Fleetwood Mac contract read. I was still with Mark and Greg Oswald. Bekka came on board with me; she obviously didn't stay with her manager after feeling betrayed on that house purchase.'

The problem with that is that they never toured in support of the album. I’m guessing she was under the assumption that the album would get more promotion once they hit the road. In any case, she only wrote half of one song and modified a lyric on another, which means very little royalty money, so I doubt potential album sales drove her decision. She was counting on the gig money.

The red flag should have been Hell Freezes Over, followed by the reconnection with Lindsey. That was the writing on the wall.

He really does. I enjoyed his book a lot, it was a refreshing look at the band. Little drama, informative, great behind the scenes info about the recordings and tours. Definitely worth buying. I always liked Billy’s voice, it had a real pleasant quality to it. I also had such a crush on Rick- I think I transferred my crush on Lindsey to Rick.

Billy also wrote in his book that Stevie was the one who wanted Lindsey to perform at the Clinton inauguration; originally, it was going to be Billy, Christine, Mick, John, and Stevie, but once Stevie agreed, she asked Billy if he would be ok with Lindsey performing in his place for that one performance, and of course we know what happened after that *cough dance*

Absolutely. And as with Bekka, Billy and Dave, Neil and Mike will look back and think 'we should have seen it coming' or 'we did see it coming'. The difference for Neil and Mike is they'd most likely not give two sh!ts. Indeed, they might appreciate the opportunity to take the 'out'.

First of all I am cracking up over the comment about buying a house based on the Time album. Agreed 100%

I think there were a few red flags. They didn't tour behind Time, and the tour they did do in 1994-95 wasn't exactly a big success. It's not like if they actually toured after Time was released (again without Chris, Lindsey, or Stevie) that suddenly a new wave of fans would have discovered this new version of Fleetwood Mac and they would have continued.

The Eagles comparison is obvious - while they were touring the World with HFO, Mick and John were playing on double/triple bills on the county fair circuit. The money sitting on the table for a Rumours reunion was way too much. It was going to happen and there was no way that Bekka, Billy, and Dave were going to be preferred over a Chris/Stevie/Lindsey lineup.

Mick and Lindsey working together. Stevie and Lindsey doing Twisted. If anyone in that mid-90's Fleetwood Mac didn't see what was obviously going to happen, they were being purposefully clueless.

We talk about how today, over 25 years later, the band is really defined in the public as the Rumours era. That's what is putting a$$es in seats. It was already the same thing then. Just taking a quick look at a 1995 setlist (as far as setlist.fm is correct anyway) and they were playing SEVEN songs off Rumours and two off the White album. More than half of their set was made up of Lindsey/Chris/Stevie songs, and none of them were even in the band. To me that was the biggest red flag, just like it is now, that the potential always exists that the Rumours era lineup is the one that always looms as a possibility.

At the time, though, it’s not like there was an album of new material to promote, which made the gigs they were doing forgivable. I actually loved that they opened for CSN in 1994.

As for the songs, what else would they have played beyond something from Behind the Mask? And, I’m not sure Billy was considered a member initially on that tour. Dave Mason made it sound like Billy was an auxiliary player in a pre-tour interview.

It's not like if they actually toured after Time was released (again without Chris, Lindsey, or Stevie) that suddenly a new wave of fans would have discovered this new version of Fleetwood Mac and they would have continued.

It wouldn’t have been anything comparable in terms of album sales, but that’s also when No Depression/alt.country/Americana/Outlaw Country started coming into the fold. Swap out Dave Mason for Mick Taylor and it could have taken on a life of its own.

However...

The Eagles comparison is obvious - while they were touring the World with HFO, Mick and John were playing on double/triple bills on the county fair circuit. The money sitting on the table for a Rumours reunion was way too much.

Which was the only reason they ever reunited. They kind of sold their soul with that. That said, none of them were in positions to turn it down.

It was going to happen and there was no way that Bekka, Billy, and Dave were going to be preferred over a Chris/Stevie/Lindsey lineup.

It could have hypothetically been Peter/Welch/Bekka and that would be true. The Inauguration really cemented the Rumours lineup as the only legitimate Fleetwood Mac lineup.

If you have Mike, you have somebody who can hear them both out, he respects Lindsey and I don't think he kisses Stevie's ring. He, partly, is responsible for the success of her solo career.

I remember when RS asked him what he had to say in response to Stevie saying "Tom shouldn't have done the 2017 tour." Stevie’s right, though. A hip replacement is a common procedure that takes three months to a year to recover from. It’s certainly not something worthy of needlessly suffering and relapsing on heroin to manage the pain, eventually leading to a fatal overdose. The world wouldn’t have ended if the Heartbreakers delayed the tour by a year.

I have friends who’ve had hip replacements. My father had one. All are almost as good as before their hips went bad and are living normal lives. One of them even asked if he could get the other one done.

So, losing someone so consequential to something so relatively minor...Stevie’s absolutely right.

The context of the interview was that with the comment by Stevie, there could be a feeling of responsibility by Mike to have talked Tom out of it. I think Mike said nobody forced Tom to tour, he wanted to do the 2017 Tour.

Time will tell. We will follow up on this topic in about a year. I could be wrong, but I would bet money that Mike and Neil absolutely won't be involved from here on. The final tour will be the Rumours lineup.

These people don't have many tours left in them. Sadly, one or more of them stand a chance of passing away within the next 10 years. Christine is nearing 80.

As far a rehearsing, what's the point? They've been playing the same set list for years, then throwing in one or two deep album tracks. Moreover, the way sound engineering is done for touring artists now -- its basically like singing to karaoke tracks. Much is pre-recorded and cannot be deviated from. What's to rehearse?

That's mostly Stevie drama -- she sits up there and pretends like she has to rehearse "Gold Dust Woman" and "Dreams" at 2 o'clock in the morning for the tour to be successful. Laughable.

I tend to think Mick has been around the Stevie-Lindsey drama that he approaches it more strategically than with any personal stakes. He has tried to smooth it over enough to keep the machine going, but he’s generally moved to whatever position is best for continuing (his payday with) the band. Right now, there’s probably some sense that they don’t want to wait for her to do a solo album and tour before another FM tour. But whatever comes out of the gates first post-pandemic is likely to be pretty lucrative.

I doubt Mick holds much against Lindsey re: negotiations or things going south with Stevie. He seems to accept that Stevie and Lindsey are opposites and will always fight. He went hard after Lindsey after the firing to shore up support for Stevie and the band. Now that she may be the holdout to an even bigger payday, he’s softening his stance on Lindsey.

It reminds me of how they all said pretty nasty stuff about Lindsey when he left in 1987. Put him down to promote the new, even better version of the band that just so happens to be playing shows near you!

This would all be easier to tolerate if FM didn’t spend the better part of 40 years selling the schtick that the band is about family and relationships and isn’t just a business arrangement among people who don’t like each other, like the Stones or the Eagles. Because that’s really what it is and perhaps always has been. It’s hard to look back at the band, especially post Tusk, and argue that money wasn’t the primary — and perhaps only — driver.

Maybe Lindsey was right about cycles. It’s just that the cycles that actually dominate FM are dysfunction and greed, not healing.

That's mostly Stevie drama -- she sits up there and pretends like she has to rehearse "Gold Dust Woman" and "Dreams" at 2 o'clock in the morning for the tour to be successful. Laughable.

I'm sorry but do you think the dance that she does during the outro of Gold Dust Woman just creates itself? That type of coordinated art doesn't just manifest out of thin air. Likewise with Dreams, or Rhiannon, do you think finding even less nuance and excitement from the low energy levels of the previous tour just happens? It takes hours and hours, from 10pm-3am, to come up with these things. Plus, I mean, Stevie is a big ROCK AND ROLL STAR! And she's cool. And we all know the cool kids don't even get their party started until after Midnight.

As for the songs, what else would they have played beyond something from Behind the Mask? And, I’m not sure Billy was considered a member initially on that tour. Dave Mason made it sound like Billy was an auxiliary player in a pre-tour interview.

I guess my point was there were other "Fleetwood Mac" songs that could have been played, including from BTM, that wasn't 70% of the Rumours album. They just continued to cement that the 1975-87 lineup was the real band and any other incarnation is really just here to play the songs that you know, even if you aren't sure who is singing/playing them. Which goes to your other point, that once the inauguration happened in 1993, it was inevitable that they'd reunite at some point and anything else was just a placeholder.

I'd argue the Stones in 1989 kind of began that trend for the classic rock genre. Except they released a new album every time they toured until 2013 (maybe '99). But it was basically, we're going to come out every few years and play the songs you know along with maybe a few new ones to try to keep us relevant. The boomers are starting to enter their peak earning years, want to relive their youth, and had the money to do so. We're here to help for one night! It really was inevitable for any of these bands who did it because it was a massive payday opportunity.

Twisted happened after Mick broke the band up.

Good catch, that time period gets a little blurry for me

I have not been on here in ages but I came the second I saw that interview. Mick is a money-grubber, plain and simple, the second it occurred to him that Stevie will prob never tour with the Mac again, he reached out to LB, I'm convinced it was just that simple. But either way, this won't happen. Concerts aren't happening any time soon, they're all old AF and the insurance would be crazy.

They just continued to cement that the 1975-87 lineup was the real band and any other incarnation is really just here to play the songs that you know, even if you aren't sure who is singing/playing them. Absolutely. That version of the band could have — in fact, should have — opened up their set to all manner of Mac catalogue songs: Rattlesnake Shake, Sands of Time (Billy on lead vocal for some Kirwan songs would have been lovely and unexpected), Underway, Black Magic Woman, Believe Me (Bekka would have been far more convincing on this than on Say You Love Me), Sentimental Lady, Jumping at Shadows (Mason on lead vocal on a great slow blues instead of his atrocious Blow by Blow), etc. At Konocti Harbor Spa & Resort in October 1994, the band should have sold itself as a blues and power-pop outfit rather than a Rumours tribute band. Billy and Bekka were cute young things, but Mason was vacuous, and the band conveyed no cohesive identity other than as a Rumours tribute band. The audience (of about 300) should have left the show thinking what a fun little blues-rock outfit they are — instead of “I feel like seeing the real Fleetwood Mac now.”

Which goes to your other point, that once the inauguration happened in 1993, it was inevitable that they'd reunite at some point and anything else was just a placeholder. In retrospect, a lot of things look inevitable, Jim. But I seriously doubt that any Rumours reunion was being engineered that early. Stevie and Rick did press all year in 1994 for Street Angel, and it was painfully obvious that she and Mac had parted ways permanently (she assumed permanently). Rick, too. As for Lindsey, you’ve seen that press conference right before the inaugural ball, right? He wasn’t looking for a reunion, to put it mildly. I can’t believe that any serious reflection on a possible reunion was happening to any of them until 1996 (except maybe Mick).

It really was inevitable for any of these bands who did it because it was a massive payday opportunity. I say to all of them: go for the payday if that’s what you want. But you’d better deliver something worth listening to (or watching), or your sensible fans will glom on to the younger, hungrier bands—musicians who have something burning inside them and want to get it out. Sitting in Fleetwood Mac concerts these days is like being forced to read all the Hallmark greeting cards at the supermarket; the emotions aren’t genuine, the artist’s need for self-expression has dried up, the execution is flashy but insubstantial, and the knowledge that you’re being sold a dumb product is overpowering.

I just don’t think this would have worked- no disrespect to that particular incarnation of the band, but I can’t imagine the majority of folks who were at a show to see FM would enjoy most of the songs you listed, of which they likely never heard of before. Even if the band rocked the house. I consider myself a fan of most of the FM eras, and even I couldn’t place a handful of the songs you mentioned. Blues aren’t my thing, I mean I enjoy a few songs like that during a show, but not as many as you mentioned. If FM had sold themselves as a blues band during that tour, I think even less people would have showed up. By the time they released Time, the band was just too different from the Rumours 5 to successfully continue on.

I just don’t think this would have worked- no disrespect to that particular incarnation of the band, but I can’t imagine the majority of folks who were at a show to see FM would enjoy most of the songs you listed, of which they likely never heard of before. But most of the people at the spa resort were not there to see Fleetwood Mac per se. They were there to see live music (and eat dinner in the same venue) — they were staying or vacationing in the area. And I think something similar is true of many of the live stops at that time (the band was an opening act or co-billed most of the time).

This “solution” was precisely the problem. The casino and fair audiences (who were out to see live music from Benatar, Mac, Crosby/Stills/Nash, REO) love Rumours, but I bet most of them weren’t terribly enthralled to see a band power through those songs without Nicks, Buckingham, and McVie. It struck everyone as a lame, cover-band show because the classic Mac catalogue was so insistently the core of the show. I’m suggesting that a set of songs not tied to the annus mirabilis of 1977 would surely have been less cringeworthy. Even the band itself would have been energized by not having to compete with “sacred” untouchable songs, and would have performed with more conviction. (The one time Mason showed any commitment to his performance was when he sang his own song We Just Disagree.) Not having any of the three 1977 singers and instead having a front line with talented incongruities made it all the more essential for the band to reinvent itself that year. It didn’t reinvent itself (at least as a live act), and it busted big.

The most cohesive, convincing song, other than the originals from that lineup, was “Only You Know & I Know.”

And that’s really the problem. That lineup was much more Delaney Bramlett than Peter Green, Bob Welch, or Lindsey Buckingham. All three of them were directly connected with Delaney & Bonnie, and I think Mick felt that would help jumpstart the chemistry with the new lineup, and it definitely did as far as Bekka and Billy were concerned, just not in a way that was especially relevant to what Fleetwood Mac had been. The other issue is Bekka being so much younger than the others. Bonnie Bramlett would have been a more appropriate choice.

“And both of us have been beautifully honest about who we are and how we got to where we were.”

Mick was frustrated by what happened during the tour negotiations, which by all accounts were absolutely brutal.

I'm curious what the issues would have been. The one issue I can think of would be Lindsey pushing back against the fact that Stevie controls when Fleetwood Mac is going to work because she is The Star.

Or could it be that Mick feels Stevie's tambo should be tapeless and LB wanted gorilla tape on the cymbals:laugh:

Not a clue, other than tour dates and setlists, and in the grand scheme of life, it really doesn’t matter.

Mick and Lindsey are on good terms, Christine and Lindsey are probably on good terms, I doubt John even cares, all of which is as good as we can expect with this lot. Neil and Mike are still in the band and Lindsey isn’t until they say otherwise.

It’s just a band. Go see it or don’t, but the incessant whining about what happened is pointless. Enjoy the music or don’t. They’re not going to be around forever and forgive the f**k out of us who got that equation and decided to see Christine and John McVie and Mick Fleetwood while they were still here.

If the current lineup made an EP or a record, I'd respect it. I can't understand how they didn't play a new song on the 50th Anniversary Tour like other golden artists have done. They had from March of 2018 until October 2018 to get something done. It's a shame.

They should have made an album and five of them would have gladly made one, just as four from the classic lineup did. It’s what happens when the biggest star is also the one with the least to offer. Neil Finn and Mike Campbell would have been in the studio just as quickly as Lindsey, given an opportunity.

Since FM performed a lot of older songs on the tour, it would have been awesome if they had rerecorded Black Magic Woman, Man of the World, All Over Again, Hypnotized, I Got You, Oh Well, Storms, Don’t Dream It’s Over, and Tell Me All the Things You Do and released those songs as an album right before the tour. That would have been relatively easy to do and might have helped introduce those songs to newer or more casual fans, who seemed lost when FM performed them live.

They were only interested in the monetary aspects of the tours since records no longer sell they could not be bothered. If they had wanted to they could have done something in that time. .Neil Finn can write a catchy pop tune in his sleep . Christine once could as well..not so sure now. A tour of New Zealand is literally 4 cities that could support a major production - Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. It would make no economic sense unless you can do Australia as well.

Also, I really don't think staying in Fleetwood Mac is a major going concern for Neil. He got a good payday and acquitted himself as well as could be expected given the circumstances. Fleetwood Mac is never going to make new music with him as a frontman and likely no future touring. See ya Mick, thanks for giving me a great year!

Europe from the US is a lot cheaper endeavor than NZ and they had the large stadium shows in Europe as well, but indeed it was an odd choice to play so few.
From Europe everything gets routed to Australia where over a dozen dates can be played. That is how each of the last two FM tours have justified NZ. As a stand-alone tour, I don't see the New Zealand whisper having much validity.

Hypothetically, if they get a $150,000 guarantee for a show (which seems low for Stevie Nicks and Crowded House in New Zealand), can do ten shows (four in Auckland, two everywhere else), and it costs $50,000 for a round trip (random high number), they’d still make more than enough to justify it. Stevie wouldn’t be bringing her crew, and the musicians would probably use backline equipment, save for guitars and a snare/random percussion.

Sorry, I totally disagree, and it's why you see limited acts, even well established acts, tour New Zealand, and they certainly don't tour without having Australia dates to add to the tour leg.

My opinion here is more than just speculation and it has a level of informed experience when it comes to the costs of doing business in NZ and AU from
a US base.

Also, the number quoted above as a $50,000 cost per show is not even close for two headlining acts such as Stevie Nicks and Crowded House to play arena sized venues. Especially with the front loaded costs that come with bringing arena level production values, along with said headliners' entourages to an island nation where costs are exponentially higher than US domestic production costs. Those front end expenses must get amortized across a limited number of shows and it further drives an unhealthy expense vs revenue ratio.

Look, they could go play a New Zealand only tour in a dual billed show, but it won't be for a any sort of big pay day.

I respect your response and intelligence; very impressive! Thank you.
So then Crowded House is making the current tour work because they didn't have to transport anything other than the musicians and perhaps staffers?

SteveMacD

Sorry, I totally disagree, and it's why you see limited acts, even well established acts, tour New Zealand, and they certainly don't tour without having Australia dates to add to the tour leg.

My opinion here is more than just speculation and it has a level of informed experience when it comes to the costs of doing business in NZ and AU from a US base.

Not to state the obvious, but Crowded House is from New Zealand. This isn’t a global tour with a production team that is traveling all over the world with their own equipment, it’s a New Zealand tour put together with a New Zealand-based production team, staff, and crew. I believe that‘s the whole point of Stevie touring New Zealand with one of New Zealand’s top acts.

All Stevie would be bringing is musicians, assistants, a tour manager, guitars, and a few pieces of percussion. The backline (amps, keyboards, drums, etc), audio engineering, AV rig, and crew would be based in New Zealand.

Also, the number quoted above as a $50,000 cost per show is not even close for two headlining acts such as Stevie Nicks and Crowded House to play arena sized venues.

The $50,000 was the cost for the people not already in New Zealand to get to New Zealand. The show guarantee I threw out, $150,000 per show, isn’t that out there.

So then Crowded House is making the current tour work because they didn't have to transport anything other than the musicians and perhaps staffers?

Which is the whole point of Stevie taking her band there. Neil’s team would be setting everything up locally.

I seriously doubt if $tevie Nicks would wipe her own ass for 150k. If $he can still reach it...:D

- Forget trying to recreate the studio sound. Scale songs down, maybe a new arrangement to give them a fresh feel. Even go acoustic.
Not a bad idea. But I can’t seem to muster much enthusiasm, even for this prospect. I mean, the fact that they have so many people playing on stage and they still sound as if they were all either in pain or newly awakened from a sound sleep probably means that this outfit’s old vigor is shot. Time is heartless, but the band is foolish. They’ve reached an ironic impasse where they sound best in a controlled studio environment yet insist on only playing concerts, where they can’t hide their depleted energy.

She really is a witch. She got a bunch of talented people to turn her non-sensical rants into hits and then got the biggest sucker, Lindsey, fired. That's spell craft. And Mick is a no talent, former junkie, who for some reason is the leader of the band. Lindsey could play drums better than him. Two of the least talented people run the band. It's sickening.

In all seriousness, Fleetwood Mac never didn’t have Top 40 albums when he managed them.Mick and Seedy actually did a great job of managing the band from 1975 until he was fired. They were a “clean” band for a top-echelon band. They weren’t grotesquely crass, like teen idols and movie soundtracks, and they had a class and sophistication in the market that was probably a result of Seedy saying “no” to a bunch of rotten ideas from various Sidney Falcos in the rock industry. The five of them made their most important decisions, not the label.

Mick changed. And I guess the other members of the band changed, too. Jim, thoughts?

I agree with what most of you have already said. This is the Playboy interview all over again. Mick is putting public pressure on Stevie to drop her solo career and put FM first. It started with Christine's recent interview. She's probably in on it with Mick LOL. I'm almost positive it won't do them any good because I'd bet Stevie is going to tour solo for 2 years before she goes back to the Mac. And I do believe she will go back. She always does. She has said many times she will always go back every 3 years. She had about 4 to 6 shows scheduled for 2020 which were cancelled. I doubt she will risk her own health touring until this pandemic is at least 90% contained. I doubt we will ever see her Rhiannon mini series even though one would think she has plenty of time to get it done. I think if Lindsey believes he is rejoining FM he won't release his solo record. It is absolutely pathetic he hasn't released it already.None of this drama is anything new for this band or for us. Yeah...her RRHOF induction victory lap tour never happened because of covid. I fully expect her to give Mick the finger and pursue songs from the vault tour leg # too many. The band may be in a bit of a bind because they can’t do a reunion (with all its attendant glitz) without Stevie there. They can’t move forward with such a huge plan without Stevie. So what do they do if no one can convince her to return? I think they just sort of fizzle out into perhaps interesting side projects — I think that’s really what Christine meant to say when she talked about the end a few months ago. She was really saying that the 1977 incarnation was kaput. I think she may have been right, too. They’re all selling their publishing rights and so on. Arenas in most US cities won’t be open for business the rest of the year. Yeah, I know some people are saying it’ll be sooner, but we’re going to get hit by mutations and variants, and despite the president’s recent speech, inoculation rollout is still damned slow and chaotic. If you can’t get your first dose until May or June or July, your second dose might not be until August or September. You aren’t going to a sports arena in October. When would Fleetwood Mac do this high-class reunion? 2022? 75- to 80-year-olds? Is that something that even the most expensive marketing can sell to masses of people?

When would Fleetwood Mac do this high-class reunion? 2022? 75- to 80-year-olds? Is that something that even the most expensive marketing can sell to masses of people?

I think yes, but they're not good enough at selling themselves. I can almost guarantee that The Stones will do a tour likely in 2022 to 1) make up for the 2020 tour that was aborted and 2) make extra money because they can sell it as a 60th anniversary. Charlie will be 80 and Ronnie as the youngest will be 75. But their business model is totally different - a "tour" that will at most be 20 shows, spaced out at only two per week, and only in stadiums.

I don't know that Fleetwood Mac can successfully do that kind of marketing and I really don't think they can continue to do the type of huge touring that they have done for the last 25 years. Physically I doubt they can handle playing every other night anymore and doing 100 shows.

WHO would be the intended audience for this tour? Who would go? Honestly, who, who, WHO?

Boomers with their social security money that was not affected by COVID, wanting to see their peers on one last hurrah of a night, to prove to themselves that they are still vital forces in this world? We are (hopefully) coming out of a pandemic; a lot of people are going to think long and hard about where they choose to travel and spend their money.

Even when it comes to Boomers, I don't get who why they would want to see these cranky septugenarians wheezing in each other's general directions for two hours.

There are PLENTY of old videos on YouTube of this band in concert at their peak. There are wonderful versions of these songs that were recorded decades ago. The BEST versions that will ever exist.

Listen, I get live music. I have been married to two musicians. I don't demand perfection from live shows; it's not that. They weren't perfect live in 1976. It's just... there is NO way this farewell tour can be good, at all. They don't have it anymore. God bless them, they are nearing death.

As far as my opinion goes, the 2018 tour should be their final tour - by tour I mean state to state. There was no new music, they did covers, and the tour didn't have a name so I say let that be the final tour of a working FM and I guess call that the 50th Anniversary Farewell Tour.

Now if there's to be a Classic reunion, I really think they should park up at the Raiders Stadium in Vegas. And see if they can sell two nights or more as the Last Time FM will ever play live.

Good point about seeing them alive... I guess I am wondering who hasn’t seen them yet, who would want to see them as a last chance. I don’t mean to sound as unkind as I did; having been born in 1972 — perhaps the year Stevie mastered the art of spicing up Hamburger Helper — I am far past my own youth. I’m just baffled I suppose. I also don’t like the sound of trying to pressure the McVies into more as it really sounds like they want to wind down and enjoy what time they have.

I'm happily brainwashed. If only the 4 came, I'd die of happiness. But, no backing musicians or backing tracks. Just the 4!! Dream on.....

Which 4? Everyone but John or everyone but Stevie?

How about if we just stick them on a stage and they have a long conversation with the crowd? That might be more interesting than hearing them and their support staff play “Rhiannon” in 2023.

I wish the very worst for both Mick and Stevie. Poverty, loneliness. I truly do. Yet, if I am saying farewell to the band forever, I do want them there. But they could then drop dead directly after the final bow.

I agree completely. Stupid, greedy old Mick allowed Stevie to RUIN the end of the band of our lives. They can both drop dead, as far as I'm concerned.

Christine and John just need a couple really good slaps, for allowing it.

Wow. That’s kind of pathetic.

I’d just quit following a band before wishing poverty, loneliness, and death on anyone. As if they don’t have families who love and care about them, all because they fired a multimillionaire guitarist.

What a sad, miserable person you must be.

He really has been the most important member. Even though Christine was always my favorite, and $tevie is the STAR!!!, NONE of it would have happened without Lindsey's vision, and him being at the helm. None of it. FM would have probably hung it up by the late 70's. $tevie would be a nobody, and probably have a few kids(without being in the Army - $he wouldn't have had to abort them - honestly, $he'd probably be a much happier person if FM had never happened). New Mick interview at Louder... and he's not echoing Stevie's line that Lindsey failed to contribute anything great to FM History!

Fleetwood Mac’s last studio album was 2003’s Say You Will. Why no more?

"We just stopped. Christine had left. At that point it would have been down to a dysfunctional band. Could there be another album? I think there’s been a thousand and one times when the answer would always be ‘Yes’. My wish, of course, is that there would be. I think this period now is interesting. Everyone’s doing their own thing. So I don’t know. But looking at the state of the nation, or whatever you want to call Fleetwood Mac, I have no qualms or regrets.

If it ends, I think we’ve done A-okay, and we’ve left a lot of great music behind. There is a band. We’re not broken up. There’s some incredibly talented people. But time is wearing on. I don’t know whether John wants to do this any more. But then he’s done that a couple of times. He’ll go, like: 'Oh, I’m bored ****less…'"

Do you think things could have been handled better with Lindsey in 2018, when he had to leave the band?

"No, I really don’t. I’m in touch with Lindsey and we had a great conversation, and it was understood that basically the dynamic for both Stevie and himself had really worn its way so thin… it was just really not a happy situation, and it’s not good for either of them. We couldn’t endure going on. And at that point, in many ways, believe me, even I’m going: 'We’re done.' And that’s the best way to describe it. There was just so much unhealed emotional content.

Again, no one was equipped to keep it going. It was just too much. So that was that. One thing for sure is that Lindsey’s work with Fleetwood Mac is faultless, and such a major part. In his own way, like Peter Green, he’s unbelievably talented, hugely invested. Also, everyone has had their own story. There’s not anyone – apart from me and John – who hasn’t left this band for many years. Lindsey left for, like, twelve years – and came back. They’ve all done it."

Well, thinking of Steve’s post, I just consider Lindsey and the family who loves him, who would not have been comforted by his multi-millionaire status and probably would not have gotten even a condolence call from his erstwhile band mates had things not worked out heart wise.

What if LB had not survived. How would that have been handled on the tour? Would Mick have just said, “Here’s to you Lindsey,” just before GYOW?

Remember how everyone started copying the format after Natalie Cole did the Unforgettable video with her departed father? Cher did one in concert singing a “duet” with Sonny. She thrilled me, because she did not make the easy choice, “I Got You Babe.” No, using movie footage of Sonny, she sang “it’s the Little Things” side by side with his image.

I would have wanted a video tribute like that to Lindsey.

Cher did start singing I Got You Babe with a Sonny video. Also, The Beat Goes On. She's been doing it for about 10 years now.

I don't think there would've been a tribute like that. Stevie looked Neil in the eyes and sang SHN, MM, and GYOW. I don't think she really cares about Lindsey. If she was the feminist she labels herself as, she would've three-way called Lindsey with Azoff on Sunday Grammy Night 2018 and chewed his a** out with Irving on the line. Lindsey's just a conversation starter for her now.

I seriously doubt they would have said anything. Mick's a heartless dick. Well, he certainly puts his wallet before everything else!!! They ignore the ugly topics. Fire who? Lindsey who? Bob Welch? Who is that? Time band? WHAT?

When the Eagles replaced Glenn with his son, after the end of the first song "Deacon" sang, they put up a HUGE pic of Glenn on all the screens. There wasn't a dry eye in the house. Would FM do that for Lindsey? F*ck no they wouldn't. They're even more selfish douches than the Eagles.

Indeed? When I saw her in Vegas, she used footage from their movie Good Times and she sang, “it’s the Little Things” in its entirety which happens to be my favorite of his. Although you can imagine I was honored when Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers did Needles and Pins.

FM might do footage of Lindsey playing Landslide while Stevie sang live, which would have probably made me mad, but as David said with Glen there wouldn’t have been a dry eye.

Actually I think Hank Williams Jr did it before Natalie with the song "Tear In My Beer" but being country it probably didn't get as much airplay as Unforgettable did.

sooo..... when Christine says this, that John doesn't want to go on another tour, she gets slapped back, forced to walk her comments back and corrected in the press by Mick himself.

Then he goes and says essentially the same thing.

I don't wish them dead, but karma will be served if they end up in a sad, lonely old age in which to ponder their douchiness while the kids/grandkids or the goddaughters and 'nieces' are counting the days until they can get their hands on the moola, or are pilfering pieces of jewelry and memorabilia out the back door (as was done to the Duchess of Windsor) because she's too senile to notice and Karen and Lori are dealing with their own old age. Or when Mick's kids and grandkids and 8th wife are tired of changing his diaper.

I don't want a full reunion tour, regardless of whether or not that's what Lindsey wants. Such a tour will never erase the bulls*** of what was done or why. If they do tour I won't be attending, but I would suggest they call it the Gaslight Tour.

I agree. But it really would not be any different from the last several tours. She could not stand him and he loved to tweek her when he could. It was a beautiful tit for tat situation. Sadly people bought the phony B.S. for so many years and would write here and other places that when they looked at each other on stage, you could tell they were in love.
I tell this story all the time but I saw Stevie get so pissed at Lindsey on the OWTS tour in Miami. She was telling her LONG Gypsy story and was rambling in the old and early days they opened for CCR and they could not get to the gig because their car broke down. Lindsey clearly was thinking...you need to cut this long and rambling story off so when she said the car broke down, he somehow made his guitar honk like a car horn. Stevie stopped mid-sentence and looked at Lindsey and said......did you just do that? Why did you do that? My story is too long? She abruptly stopped the story and just walked away when the music to Gypsy started. The rest of the night she never even looked at Lindsey and it was one of the shows where Stevie did not come out to talk to the audience after the concert.
I get frustrated because literally EVERY show is on youtube but for some reason not much of Miami OWTS and I just wish someone captured this moment because it was jaw dropping and gave an insight to the friction between them. Never saw a verbal confrontation on stage before. She was pissed.

it's clear that she has no sense of humor when it comes to herself. and while she might be hypersensitized and way-over-the-top annoyed when Lindsey gently teases her, he's not the only one she gets so annoyed with. remember how she hated Rod Stewart by the end of their tour? i always remember that one interview with her and Rod before the tour started and Rod was gently teasing about their old crazy days. she did not think that was a joke. she has a narrative about herself that she doesn't allow anyone to tease or joke about. (and every time she gets pissed at someone for some innocent joke, the loudest of her fans throw tons of hate at that person. to this day you will see Stevie fans posts how Rod "disrespected her."

and the same about Lindsey teasing during Gypsy speech. probably why she made sure he was not on 2018 tour - she wanted full respect and attention of everyone on stage. not some silly teasing between Lindsey, Christine and Mick while she's telling some half-made-up story from the past.

being at too many FM shows between 3013 and 2015, i saw bunch of similar Stevie-Lindsey "confrontations" on stage. she hated when he paid attention to anyone but her. he was not there for the fans, he was there for her and that fact he didn't want to get that obviously drove her nuts. everyone else apparently got the message after the firing ("you can be next!") so on fakewood 2018-19 tour they were all quiet and easting her sh*t. therefore, it was such a "happy" tour, as long as you don't hear backstage stories.

i know i said it many times before, but if by any chance Lindsey really rejoins FM while Stevie is still in it, i really hope my wish to see Lindsey while still possible will not override my contempt for his willingness to eat sh*t for no good reason. i will not go. i saw the 5 in 2014-15 and it was great. but i don't need to waste my time and tons of money on that bs anymore.

while i understand John going in 2019 because he wanted to see / meet Christine, i have no ruch rationale to see LB with backstabbers.

If he went back, it would be beyond ridiculous. I wouldn't go if it was free.

I don't wish them dead or harm. Let them live with their power hungry, money hungry personalities. Wishing harm for someone can bite you in the ass. Don't tempt the fates, just let the karma hit in her ghosting buttocks.

Karma is really overrated. I have seldom seen it balance the scales. These days, I hear people constantly saying, “this will hurt his/her legacy.” And I think to myself, “What! No, I am going to need more than their legacy hurt.”

it's clear that she has no sense of humor when it comes to herself. and while she might be hypersensitized and way-over-the-top annoyed when Lindsey gently teases her, he's not the only one she gets so annoyed with. remember how she hated Rod Stewart by the end of their tour? i always remember that one interview with her and Rod before the tour started and Rod was gently teasing about their old crazy days. she did not think that was a joke. she has a narrative about herself that she doesn't allow anyone to tease or joke about. (and every time she gets pissed at someone for some innocent joke, the loudest of her fans throw tons of hate at that person. to this day you will see Stevie fans posts how Rod "disrespected her."

and the same about Lindsey teasing during Gypsy speech. probably why she made sure he was not on 2018 tour - she wanted full respect and attention of everyone on stage. not some silly teasing between Lindsey, Christine and Mick while she's telling some half-made-up story from the past.

being at too many FM shows between 3013 and 2015, i saw bunch of similar Stevie-Lindsey "confrontations" on stage. she hated when he paid attention to anyone but her. he was not there for the fans, he was there for her and that fact he didn't want to get that obviously drove her nuts. everyone else apparently got the message after the firing ("you can be next!") so on fakewood 2018-19 tour they were all quiet and easting her sh*t. therefore, it was such a "happy" tour, as long as you don't hear backstage stories.

someone needs to spill :blob1:

I don't think a reunion tour will happen. I don't see any of them with the energy not only to pursue a long tour but to also tolerate each other anymore. I haven't seen the 5 in any tour, so even if it would look fake (and we all know it will) I'd still take it and dream it's 2014-15 again.

This shows how wacko she is. For 99.9% of people in this world this would just be a bit of harmless fun...a bit of banter. Laugh it off. Smile. Give a menacing but playful stare. Shake your finger. Giggle a bit. Move on.
Not her.

I agree but when you don't like someone sometimes you take the bait and do something you regret. As much as Stevie and Lindsey may be in a cold war on stage, this was the first time I saw her confront him vocally in front of a crowd. Asking him if he did that. Then WHY did you do that? Then inferred it was because her banter was too long. The pot boiled over that night. Other nights it still exists but they can hide behind the microphone and performance.

I've always found it hilarious that practically EVERY NIGHT on that tour (OWTS) Christine and John would sit on an amp and have an entire conversation while Stevie rambled on about Gypsy....yet a few hand gestures at Music Cares sent her into a Chernobyl meltdown....or Lindsey's added sound effect Miami caused a riff.

I wonder if all of her anger and resentment comes from knowing deep down, almost nobody in that bad appreciates her 15 minute soapbox story times between songs.

It's like Nelly from Little House on the Prairie. She knew she was disliked, but it didn't stop her from continuing the same behavior.

I would have chopped off my middle finger just to hear John and Chris's conversation just for one night sitting on those amps during this story time. They were engaged in deep conversation and it drove me nuts not knowing what they were saying.

Maybe:

Can this story get any longer?

Nice hotel but the coffee sucks

I always loved playing this town

Are Stevie and Lindsey not speaking again?

That bloody cheap bastard Mick charging fans to say hello

I cant wait for this tour to be over

If the band was a democracy, as Stevie always said it was, the other four should have taken the initiative as a “voting” bloc and told Stevie to limit the anecdotal break to a few minutes in order to keep the momentum going. A concert needs pacing (that quality missing from the 1980 live album). That way, Lindsey wouldn’t have to bear the brunt of Stevie’s selfish airhead wrath. A band always has work to do that isn’t directly related to music, and Mac used to be so good at that in the Seventies but really got terrible at it. It caused a lot of problems over the years. You need a united front to solve the little problems, or they’ll fester.

Had the no-nonsense John Courage managed the OWTS tour, Stevie’s anecdotage would have been immediately dealt with. Her overlong stories would have been “tale-docked.”

From 1997 to 2018 Lindsey ran Fleetwood Mac. As Stevie said, we all get a vote, but Lindsey gets two votes. There was no Dance, then Say You Will Tour (which was 120 dates) without Lindsey. But by then Stevie had reestablished her solo career, and slowly she realized that she didn't need Lindsey and why do I need to be submissive to his wants and needs? Without Stevie there was no arena / stadium Fleetwood Mac. She knew it, seized on it, and won the battle.

Now in order to do the ultimate payday, you need for the last time ever, the Rumours 5 on stage. Will she take the bait? If you take that bait, you can do the 30 largest markets in the US at stadium size, 10 Markets in Europe and 6-8 largest markets in AU / NZ with about 60 dates over 12 months with a huge multiplier on margin vs cost and massive guarantees. We will see if it happens. Lindsey will jump at it, not because he needs to, but because he wants to, but it is all up to Stevie.

Agreed completely. Once her solo career regained it's momentum(thanks to the Dance/Lindsey), $he began to realize that $HE was the seat filler. And her ego began to inflate.

Ultimate payday - don't count your chickens before they've hatched. John has said he's done touring, and Christine will be knocking on 80. I DO think you'd be right if time was on their side. But it's not. They're officially old AF now.

I also agree. I also think once she got off klonopin she realized even more how powerful she is within the band esp post Time

I was recently reading a 1990 interview with Stevie and even in her klonopin haze she was attacking Mick for performing way too many shows. She was fully in the Mac and committed but Mick saw the end coming and booked a very long world tour with an insane amount of European stops including Australia before the Mac even stepped foot in the States. Today that would never happen. Stevie would have veto power over any touring period. It just was refreshing to hear her go after Mick while still doing her duty within the group. Now the shoe is on the other foot. Stevie is no longer the slave to Mick and his endless shows but he now is a slave to Stevie......firing members, hiring members, and doing whatever the f**k she wants. It truly is $tevie Mac.

Then Lindsey and Stevie can be in 2 separate places and edited together like it's an actual concert. Stevie can then spend weeks on closeups and editing her speeches so they actually make sense.

Is it even possible with the best editing to make those stories sensible? I listened to that Gypsy diatribe and I'm still not sure what the hell she was selling. It's like that place in set was there specifically for Stevie to drop triggers like "SAN FRANCISCO!," "THE VELVET UNDERGROUND!," and "1968!" and then name drop whatever artists popped into her head whom she knew would get :blob2: from the largely boomer audience.

Exactly. It was all about showing the band that she's more famous than they are. And none of them (except Mick) really care about that.
And when she got called out by the person she hates the most, she went on the attack. Lindsey called her out on it at musicares, plain and simple. Even Christine had a whistle.

She has nothing else in her life but the need for attention. Add BuckVie album/tour, and you've got yourself a WAR!

Had the no-nonsense John Courage managed the OWTS tour, Stevie’s anecdotage would have been immediately dealt with. Her overlong stories would have been “tale-docked.”

Look, Greenpeace may have been for a good cause but when they would take up donations for it, it was the most boring thing on earth. The audience would go from being excited at the prospect of one last song to wanting to run for the exits. And Stevie would prolong it by rambling and kidnapping little girls to pull onto the stage.

For myself, by contrast, I kind of like anecdotes to an extent. I want to hear about her car and her deceased dog and her waitressing skills, within reason.

People always get on Lindsey for his speeches (which Stevie finds very boring) but I am open to those too.
