Forgive me if this has already been posted somewhere!

An account I follow on Instagram (@fleetwoodmacnews) just announced that WEA is planning on reissuing the 1980 Live Album on April 9th, 2021. I can't find any articles about it anywhere else, but in case anyone was interested these were the details they leaked:

Remastered, deluxe edition box set including 2LPs, 3CDs and a 7" vinyl single (presumably Fireflies)

If it's true I'm super excited! I love the live album so improved sound quality would be amazing. Also the original CD release is only 2 CDs right? I wonder what will be on the third CD. Maybe some cut live tracks like The Chain, You Make Loving Fun, or Sisters of the Moon? Or maybe some live tracks from later albums that never made it to CD like Brown Eyes, Isn't it Midnight or Seven Wonders.

It's an interesting choice to do a live album. I'm looking forward to this.

I’d throw the entire band under a bus for the opportunity to have an expanded or deluxe Live 1980 album.

Why are they reissuing Live 1980 when they just did a tour with a new lineup? I thought Lindsey was being redacted from their future releases.

They could've had a live album of the 2018 Tour with Don't Dream It's Over, I Got You, and Free Fallin'.

Maybe the third disc is new recordings of FM classics with Neil Finn and Mike Campbell!

I seriously doubt they'd screw with the Rumours legacy on doing this.

Likewise. But would it be a total shock if they did pull something from that dumb 2018 tour? Not the cover song garbage, but would they include Stevie's blah take on Black Magic Woman, Tell Me All The Things You Do, or Hypnotized? I would certainly hope not and I think Mick would try hard to continue capitalizing off the Rumours 5 and not taint it.

Journey did it for their first album with their new lineup in 2008. Do you know who their boss was?

This will probably only be a 75-80 live comp, just like it always was. The extra disc will probably be full of the hits/standards that should have been on there instead of painfully long songs like O&O, NTF, and NGBA. Think About Me, YMLF, an early Tusk, and SHN would have been way better choices.

If they were to ever release any live stuff from the 18-19 tour, it would be on its own, maybe with that Neil-Stevie duet thrown in.

I would've liked another take of Fireflies if it exists.

By the Neil-Stevie duet, do you mean the Find Your Way Home one with Christine? I think if they were going to include something that they didn't do on that tour, it would be two newly recorded songs. Life Def Leppard did with MirrorBall.

If they did release an Live 2018-2019, that would be released 2023 earliest:laugh:

I think it would be foolish to tack on a third disc of stuff from 2018 or even 2014. Talk about inviting folks to compare you to your glory days. “While the first two discs clearly highlights the band at the height of their success, the glossiness fades on disc three. It’s evident keys have been lowered for everyone and the ever present army of backing musicians is a stark contrast to the rest of the set”

I hope that third disc is all tusk era related tracks.

It will likely be tracks that were already included on the Tusk Super Deluxe release. The version of The Chain from Wembley is my favorite and would not surprise me if it were included.

Hopefully this is not the case but it is very likely.

My *hope* (aka pipedream) is that they unearthed new recordings from the 1975-1980 tours and include some songs that were left out of the reissues like:

Crystal (has anyone ever heard this one from the 75 tour?)
Frozen Love
Silver Springs
Sunny Side of Heaven
Second Hand News
Believe Me
Think About Me
You Make Loving Fun (I know it's on the Mirage reissue but I'm being picky and would like a better one lol).

Bonus points if they can find the ones from the 80s tours too:
Hold Me
Brown Eyes
Isn't it Midnight
Seven Wonders
Little Lies
Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You (not this one lol)
I Loved Another Woman
Save Me
Stand on the Rock
In the Back of My Mind
Tear it Up
Love is Dangerous

Then you'd have the ultimate live album from the glory days!

I've never really had much of a desire to meet Stevie either. I always thought Christine would be the most fun one to talk to of you HAD to sit down with one of them, mostly because she seems like she would be candid and and a little more down to earth.

I have met Mick once, after a Zoo show. When it was free, not something that cost a paycheck. It was cool. He got me hip to Dave Mason, which, go figure, was two years before Dave was in Fleetwood Mac.

I’d love to meet the McVies, and maybe a few others, but not so much Stevie or Lindsey.

Christine and John were the only ones I ever really wanted to meet(back in the day). But I was always afraid I wouldn't understand anything John ever said(I can barely decipher anything he says on video- cockney drunken babbling, with almost no enunciation), and having a few bad meeting stars stories already... if Christine were mean to me, it would break my heart.

We have a daily poster here who met her a couple years ago, and she was lovely. But, she's sober and old now... 30 years ago she may have punched me in the face. She was my absolute heroine until age kept Bob Welch out of the rrhof, then when she didn't save Lindsey... she's still my favorite, but she ain't no Superwoman.

I briefly met Christine at a weird celebrity softball game in Encino in early 1987..the game was between Fleetwood Mac and of all groups Motley Crue. Nicks and Buckingham were not there . Mick ,John and Christine were as well as Stevie's ne're do well brother Chris. Most of the fans there were skanky girls there to see Motley Crue. Christine came over and talked to some us fans through the chain link fence and signed a couple of autorgraphs .One friend of mine asked her about the yet to be released Tango and she replied "it's a good album I promise you that ". Then he gave her something to sign and she replied 'uh this isn't a very good pen." Another fan that i did not know gave her some kind of plaque to give to Stevie which she graciously accepted ( and hopefully threw in the trash) Another fan gave her a bumper sticker to which she responded "oh for me'! as if she were surprised someone actually gave her something. I asked her if she was going to play in the softball game and she gave me a kind of withering look. My ex who was there told John " I grew up with you "he did not reply but his expression was priceless. My impression of Christine is that she was cordial and down to earth but would not put up with nonsense:laugh:

Nicks and Buckingham weren't there. Hmm. Divas?

I did sound once for Vince Neil's solo band. He was a complete coke head DICK. The show started 3 HOURS late on a weeknight. The crowd was outraged when he finally took the stage, chanting "BULLSH*T". He played 3 songs and left the stage. The crowd began to riot and the state police had to be called in. It got a small write up in Rolling Stone a couple weeks later. You can't make this sh*t up...

Who TF brings a gift for $tevie and gives it to someone else to give to her? I f*cking hate people...

That was still a pretty sweet meeting with Christine! Color me jealous.

I brought her a dozen roses to the second show of the Buck Vie tour. I could push them within a couple inches of her toes, but she didn't seem to notice. She left the stage at the end, and left them. Her assistant came out gathering her personal belongings a few minutes later, and I talked to her for a minute, and BEGGED her to please take them back stage and give them to Christine. She picked them up and took them back stage. In my heart, I HAVE to believe that she got them.

Although she never called me. My number was included in the card, should she be needing someone to worship her while she was in Nashville!

This live album reissue is so unexpected. I would have no interest in anything else but this coming from this band. The Live album has always been one of my favorites. Its the best thing Mick ever did ....pretty much forcing Warner Brothers to do this. Everyone was against it and it was not commercially successful. The band had just released what was considered a flop double album......now another double live album with tracks from the flop double album? I can see why no one was excited about it. But its the best thing ever. So much better and raw compared to the #1 Dance album. I just wish they did not included those "new" tracks and we got The Chain and Sisters. I also wish all tracks came from the Tusk Tour compared to sound checks on the Rumours tour. I think the Dreams on the live album is nails down a chalk board. Nicks is overly selling the song as if she was a contestant on American Idol. The reason? It was recorded just as Dreams was released on the Rumours tour....recorded in Paris on a sound check. I think she was excited about the song but good grief I hate the vocal.

Since this thread also about meeting them, I am jealous and also a loser. In 1984, I had won 2 sets of tickets from a radio station for Christine McVie. My parents were not going to take me so I had to find other ways of going. I cracked the code of when the radio station was going to play a FM song to call and win tickets. I got lucky twice on an adult contemporary station that apparently not many people listened to. But all winners were eligible for backstage passes to meet Christine. OMG. I had double entries. How could I not win? I didn't. :(
I never "met" them but shook Stevie's hand and Lindsey's hand at the meet and greet. In my 20's, I was very fit and had this wife beater tank top on that said "Rock Hard". During her edge walk in 1998, Stevie grabbed both hands and looked down and read my shirt. Her expression was odd

Great news about the Live album which ,as has been said, is far better than 'The Dance' I think.( with the exception of NTF and One More Lonely Night)
As regards the extra CD- I suspect that it will be the remainder of the songs from the St. Louis '79 show that are not on the Live album: The Chain,WMYTYTO,Oh Daddy,Save me a place,Tusk,Angel,YMLF,Sisters, Blue Letter and Songbird.

That was exactly my thought ... it's a money-scraper this release .. remastered ok ... fine ... but the third disc will probably have stuff we already have from the previous box-sets ... (or same songs from different venues).

I don't hate Oh Daddy as much as you like to point out(although I love our interplay :xoxo: ). Homie ain't a big fan of SLEEPY. Warm Ways, Beautiful Child, e.t.c...

So we're finally getting a live Hold Me from the Mirage Tour??? Brown Eyes and what else is coming from Mirage? Second Hand News?

This is exciting! I destroyed those Live CD's when I was commuting to college right after The Dance. During those years before you could just type anything into YouTube, there was little available for live stuff from the Mac if you were a high school and college kid who didn't know squat about how to get bootlegs.

Update: never mind my first question :)

I'll never understand why on the Mirage Deluxe release they didn't release a whole show from The Forum vs. just regurgitating a kinda ratty sounding recordings that were on the old Mirage Tour video. Clearly if they have Hold Me, they have full recordings of both shows. After the awesome live cuts on the Tusk release, someone soiled the sheets on Mirage.

Not too crazy about the ‘82 recordings. I guess they’re cool to have, but I’m weirdly puritanical about keeping it to what they had when they were compiling the original release.

As an ode to ChiliD, you can change the set list in a play list. :xoxo:

Of course we have that in common. Without gushing, you're one of my very favorite Ledgies.

It doesn't make much sense that they'd put Hold Me on here, but hey, prayers got answered, albeit in a non timely fashion, and in an inappropriate place.

Damn, there goes my free copy!

Tight assed me will wait for the best deal. I remember y'all were paying $86 for Mirage. I held out for about 6 weeks, and paid $43! The last boxed set(68-74)....I forget what they were going for, but I held out and got it for $42. Yeah, I love a deal...;)

Well I just meant audio but the video would be even better! All they did on the Mirage Deluxe was pluck the audio from the video release. It didn't sound like they cleaned it up or did anything to make it sound better than a 30 year old video release.

Sure, dealing with video might require dealing with Sony thus making it a pain. But why not get the Audio of a full show on the deluxe release. Oh well, such is Fleetwood Mac. At least we are FINALLY getting a live Hold Me!

Yeah, it's exactly an audio rip of the video. How utterly CHEAP AND LAZY of them.

Now that it looks like they're finished, maybe Mick will be pushing for more releases? I'm sure he's only a house payment or two away from bankruptcy.

Oh for sure, he will be on fire trying to get money out of us. What is next? What market could there be for reissue of Behind the Mask or Time? A live album from 1987-90? 1995? Is there anything they could do with The Dance that wouldn't be exactly like The Dance but recorded in an arena? The 37th release of Rumours?

FM's social media is promoting this. I'll get impaled for saying this but there could be backchannel talking happening with Stevie and Lindsey people to feel out future "collaboration."

I'm just shocked that they're selling live performance recordings from the Lindsey years. Mick during the 2018 CBS interview said "this is absolutely a new band" This just doesn't seem to be how you'd proceed with a new lineup in tact. They're highlighting Lindsey as a member in the promotional video. There are a lot of Lindsey lead vocals in this set.

I'm not shocked at all. Mick is a giant liar and that crap about a new band was just that, crap. They were never going to record an album. If they were so hell bent on being a new band, they would've recorded an album or even a single and then toured. It was a cash grab tour and Stevie wasn't going to do it with Lindsey, and Mick wasn't going to make as much money with Lindsey and without Stevie, so they fired Lindsey and got some replacements who could stand in and still get away with calling it Fleetwood Mac. Just like with Lindsey in the post-SYW years, I am certain Neil and Mike along with Mick and the Mac's would have done an album as Fleetwood Mac, but Stevie wasn't going to do it. I'm sure they still thought there was a chance, but the pandemic killed everything. Now the gravy train is drying up quick and Mick has to reposition himself and his ability to make some coin. Next thing you know he's talking to Lindsey. And we're going to go right back to rereleasing old stuff that features Lindsey because he can make money off of it.

So....has anyone listened to The Chain on Spotify yet? I'm not the best at this and some of you are experts at spotting this stuff, but I feel like this is not from the Cleveland 1980 show. It doesn't sound Tusk-era at all. It sounds like it's from the Mirage tour. On my first listen I was like, this sounds familiar. After a couple listens, it's almost spot on to the Mirage video. Like, maybe from the other night at The Forum from the video. Lindsey's guitar sounds more like 1982 and even some of his and Stevie's ad-libs sound like Mirage. 3. Think About Me ** Kemper Arena, Kansas City, MO (8/24/80) [3:15]
4.What Makes You Think You’re The One ** Kansas Coliseum, Wichita, KS
(8/23/80) [4:13]
10. Tusk ** Kemper Arena, Kansas City, MO (8/24/80) [6:25]
12. Sisters Of The Moon ** Omaha Civic Auditorium, Omaha, NB (8/21/80) [7:05]
13. Songbird ** Omaha Civic Auditorium, Omaha, NB (8/21/80) [3:55]

These tracks are very exciting. I couldn’t be happier. I am always drawn back quite nostalgically to the final month of the 1980 tour, and consider that month the band’s live pinnacle (not counting the blistering Green days, of course). The most heavily invested jamming I can ever remember the band doing — the most playful sort of musical circumnavigation and the brashest, snottiest attitude — was during that month on all of Lindsey Buckingham’s battering-ram songs: “What Makes You Think,” “World Turning,” “Go Your Own Way,” and above all “Not That Funny.”

We got a great little taste of the final month on the Tusk Deluxe, with an incendiary “Rhiannon,” a “Landslide,” and a memorable “Songbird” (with a trippy and difficult-to-play little musical bridge). So being able to add these cuts is hard to beat.

Perhaps I’d make one change: as much as I love the “Tusk” performances in August (very long and narcotizing in a good way), I would have included a “Tusk” from the Los Angeles Forum in December 1979 solely because the USC Trojan Marching Band was there with the band, and it was not just corny but damned exciting.

But with these individual tracks from Kansas City, Wichita, Omaha, and Tucson between the two collections, why oh why can’t we just get the entire shows from these cities?

I’m pretty excited about the live version of Hold Me. Although Hold Me is one of those songs where the live version just does not measure up to the album version. Gypsy is another one of those songs. An example of a song that sounds equally amazing, maybe even better than its album counterpart, is Sara. I would love a live from 1982 Sara. We have a 1979 on the Live album already and a 1980 on Tusk deluxe. 1982 live Sara is my favorite version of Sara. They played it a little faster and Lindsey does a little slightly different guitar riff. It sounds so good. I recommend looking it up on YouTube.

Agree about Hold Me live but I am still thrilled to get a non-bootleg version from '82. I wonder if we'll have Lindsey's intro included..."this is a hell of a song!"

I have to disagree with Sara. Just my opinion of course, but I always felt those 1980 versions were perfection. The original from the Live album is awesome and I just adore the one on the Tusk Deluxe release. I thought it started to lose something with the sped up tempo on the '82 shows. It's not bad and it fits well with the show, I just prefer the Tusk era of Sara.

Haha, yeah...I mean, that's a pretty significant oops IMO. I'm happy to get a clean version of The Chain from Mirage, I always felt the one on the video was the peak performance of that song. Being from the other night, this version is virtually the same but the sound is 100x better than what was released on the Mirage deluxe release. I guess we already got a Tusk Chain so this completes the Rumours/Tusk/Mirage versions? Nonetheless, why are they labeling it Cleveland 1980? Even to my non-musician ears, it was pretty clear right away that it was from 1982.

Sure, so my view is that the 2018-2019 tour was nostalgia. This Live Deluxe release is also nostalgia.

Lindsey is not a member of Fleetwood Mac anymore. Mick said on CBS This Morning that they are a new band, and with that I understand that they've moved on from Lindsey.
This isn't a reissue of a studio album, it's a reissue of live material. Studio albums contain classic recordings of the songs that people always hear on the radio or are most familiar with. Fireflies was already rereleased in 2018 on 50 Years Don't Stop, not sure if One More Night was on it.

So if you're going to release live recordings of old songs, why not release live recordings of this new lineup which Christine has said was the most fun tour or easiest going tour ever, rather than live recordings of the band with someone who is not a member now? That's what I ask to FM and management.

If you have any questions, let me know. Just expressing my opinion here.

Live was was a Top 20 album and the only release from the Rumours lineup to not have a deluxe reissue. A 40 year old legacy live album being reissued has nothing to do with the new lineup. Yeah Fleetwood Mac live did not sell all that well. It only managed to go gold back when these bands sold millions with most releases. An easy comparison would be the Eagles double live album released at exactly the same time. It went platinum six times over.

Honestly, I file The Dance CD right beside Behind The Mask. I'll bet it's been ten years since I've listened to either. I watch The Dance DVD a couple times a year.

I NEVER got into the extra players in the FM orchestra too much. I could maybe name you one of $tevie's original backup singers, and that would be it. I'd come closer to naming Lindsey's (or Christine's)solo bands than percussion and backup singers in FM. I always figured those were $tevie's paid yes people, so I didn't have much interest.

I could maybe name you one of $tevie's original backup singers,

When I heard they were looking for a new male vocalist/guitarist a few years ago, one name I thought would be good was Stephen Bishop, forgetting Marylin Martin is one of Stevie’s current backing vocalists. Most people don’t know that he wrote “Separate Lives.” That would have been awkward giving the backing vocalist a lead on a song that would have been one of the biggest hits in the set.

Yes that is a very good theory. Having said that, does no one not listen to the songs and clueless about the band not to know the labeling was wrong. I imagine to remaster songs takes a little effort at least listening to the songs. Maybe the people remastering have no idea who Fleetwood Mac is let alone live material.

Or maybe Mick sold out of his mom's underwear and rushed this deluxe set to market.

It would be hilarious if the photo spread was of the Behind the Mask era with the BTM tour dates. I mean really, how can this be an official release with such a major screw up. At least the unofficial Brazilian release of the Mirage concert with a photo of the BTM line up was not official.
Oooops, you mean this picture of Billy Burnette is not John McVie? Don't worry, we will get a cardboard cut out of Billy shot from the neck down and no one will notice.

This album is odd but the oddity of it makes it genius in a few areas. This live version of Over and Over is the highlight of the album for me. To transform a cold and subdued song on Tusk to this unleashed power ballad live with harmonies and hypnotic guitar jam at the end is remarkable.
I too question the new songs while including sound check songs from earlier tours. Let alone including a version of Dont Stop where Lindsey breaks a guitar string at the end. They had no other versions of Dont Stop? Yet they polished Sara like a gem that it is. I actually was disappointed years later discovering this beautiful Sara was touched for the album.
Highlights:
Sara
Over and Over
I'm So Afraid (still my favorite live version)
Dont let Me Down Again
Rhiannon (still my favorite live version)
Oh Well - I think its better than Peter Green (sorry)
Over My Head - its an entirely different song

I like Go Your Own Way but for some reason its not my favorite based on Lindsey and Stevie's vocals

I will get flamed because I may be in the minority but I dont care for Farmers Daughter. I would have axed Fireflies, Farmers Daughter, and One More Lonely Night. If I had to keep one, I would keep One More Lonely Night (again, I realize I am in the minority)

Removing these "new" songs and Not That Funny could have given us The Chain and Sisters in full length.

Disappointments:
Dreams - worst version of the song ever IMHO
Dont Stop - not great
Landslide - sorry but I cant hear her .....speak up a little dear
Not That Funny - good grief not again

Even though the album peaked at #14 (for a double live album), Mick stated in his first book there was a lot of "told you so" and finger pointing at him. The album was not considered a commercial success and its dismal sales hurt after several albums of multi platinum success.

Omg I LOVE Dreams on the live album!! It’s been doctored up, but I love it. They actually do the background vocal part!!

IMO, the worst version of Dreams is on Live In Boston.

Sadly, there is a high likelihood that nobody in the band was even involved. Maybe Lindsey could tell by the guitar tone that it was 82 and not 79. They were probably given a copy to approve and sign off on and that’s about it. Somebody mentioned the alternate rumors release to Stevie in an interview and she barely knew what it was until the interviewer gave more details.

Videos on their YouTube channel are labeled incorrectly all over the place. Peacekeeper is from 1997 according to them.

I’m excited about everything regarding this release, but for me, the #1 thing is that the original 2 CDs are being remastered! That alone is something I’ve been wanting for years! The sound on the original release is horrible, so hopefully the remastering will be a huge improvement. I hate the price and how cumbersome these Deluxe Editions have been, but I’ll deal with it.

The other thing I’m really excited about is that this release, along with the earlier rerelease of the pre-Buckingham Nicks FM albums, is this gives me hope that Behind the Mask will also get the Deluxe treatment. Probably after the Dance Deluxe Edition, which I have no doubt will also be released.

I just cant stand the way she is over singing it. But when I looked at the date when it was recorded, it made sense to me. Dreams was not a hit when it was recorded. It was just released as the second single while on tour. IMHO she is over singing it because she is trying to oversell the song. It does not need that kind of drama.
I have no problem with the background vocals or music, the vocal is nails down a chalkboard to me.

If they sold the rights to their songs how do they make money from this release?

I don’t know how that sort of thing works, but the record company will make money, and they’re the one who’s releasing it, not the band.

I'm with Bwboy, I'm just happy to get a re-master and bonus tracks.

I'm am disappointed I hear a clearly Mirage version of THE CHAIN listed as Cleveland 1980. I have the 1980 bootleg in CTown and it's incredible. They didn't even stop in Cleveland in 1982.
I'm going to listen with a great ear to trust the rest of their "listings and liner notes."

But again, still happy. The sound on the spotify is incredible.

I share your disappointment - the bootleg of that Cleveland show is one of the best I have from Tusk. They were firing on every cylinder they had.

But also, the Spotify sound is . It is SO much better sounding than what was released on Mirage Deluxe. I'm hearing things with Lindsey's guitar and Chris's organ that was always way too muddled on the Mirage video, Deluxe, or any bootlegs from that tour. I'll take the screwup on this one because this is still quite a treat!

I'll be honest, I wouldn't be mad if the Sisters was also from the Forum in 1982.

Same!! That tour had a much better Sisters. Stevie really enhanced the intensity. I love that LIndsey sings on it, as well.

Christine's pumping electric keyboard and wonderful low tones compliment John's very low bass pedal sound. I'd love to hear that more in the forefront. Here's hoping they screwed up more!

Kinda makes sense what I think they’ve done — release live songs from tours or tour legs that the Tusk Deluxe did not include (isn’t this all coming from Rhino?). Thus, a 1980 “Rhiannon” on the Tusk Deluxe means that it would not be included on this Live redux. There was a 1980 “Chain” on the Tusk Deluxe, so opting for a 1982 “Chain” is what they did here. Similarly, a 1979 “WMYTYTO” on the Tusk Deluxe means that they went for a 1980 performance here. A 1980 “Sisters” before is now a 1982 “Sisters,” and so on. Just my hunch.

But if there was an effort to mix and match tours, it would inevitably lead to some errors in labeling. I would say to them again: just release the entire shows and don’t worry about shuffling. I hate it when somebody else decides for me which cuts from a concert represent the acme. For the Tusk Deluxe, I didn’t want to hear a live “Tusk” from St. Louis — that performance had nothing noteworthy about it. The song hadn’t even evolved into a bizarre new shape so early in the tour. Plus it was already on the video. Amateurs should not be involved in these live cut decisions!

I thought I'd already posted this here but I can't seem to find it. Anyway my beef here is that there appears to be no opportunity to purchase the triple CD without the vinyl bonuses. We're not all company execs who can afford to spend that amount of money on a release. OK there's the download but there's no digital booklet for those of us who like to read up on extra facts and figures.

Even Paul McCartney offers mulltiple options with his mega-deluxe editions - the rich devotee's box set with a book, CDs plus vinyl, 2CD or just the remastered original. We have been cheated as we were with the 2015 Tusk where you couldn't get the 5CD edition without getting the vinyl too.

Nah, Lindsey will let him move in. It amazes me how for all his success how much Lindsey craves Mick's love. Funny because if it was not for Lindsey's musical vision and production skills from 1975-1987 and his return to Fleetwood Mac from 1997-2018, Mick would never have had the millions to blow and make all over again.

LOL. Don’t kid yourself. Lindsey benefits just as much from Mick as the other way around. Lindsey’s best album chart position outside of Fleetwood Mac was #32, Fleetwood Mac’s top album position in the USA prior to 1975 was #34. They were doing just fine before Lindsey. The song “Go Insane” peaked at #23, “Big Love” peaked at #5, and Lindsey’s never had a Top 10 single that didn’t involve Mick.

And, if we’re being honest, we know which member is most responsible for their arena rock status.

Man, I don’t know what band of brahs world you think these people live in, but it was always a business relationship first and foremost. Character, loyalty, betrayal??? That’s not their world. Never was. It was always money that kept them together. If the 1975 album bombed by their standards, Lindsey and Stevie would be in Dave Walker land.

I remember reading once here on the ledge that some of the songs on the 1980 double live album were NOT recorded during the Tusk tour in 1979/80, but also in 1975 and 1977 (f.e. Over My Head). Now I read in the iTunes store (the new remastered live album) that ALL the songs of the album really were recorded during the Tusk tour only, except for Don't Let Me Down Again. Is this true?

Not a chance that’s true. Just off the top of my head, that Rhiannon is clearly from the Rumours tour. And I don’t believe Over My Head was played on the Tusk Tour.

Correct. Over My Head was not the Tusk tour. This reissue is a grab bag of tours.

The Rhiannon on the live album is absolute perfection. Damn it rocks and the vocals and everything is humming like a well oiled machine. As much as I LOVE the Mirage concert and all the songs, Rhiannon is the low point. Stevie mailed in the performance and the song just does not have the tempo and power as earlier tours.

If I had 2 questions to ask Lindsey. One would be about the urban legend about the tracking on Tusk and the other would be why in the world did the band include a song on the live album where his guitar string breaks at the end. Maybe they thought this was cool? You can hear someone (sounds like Chris) say at the end..."you broke a string didn't you" Now that is some weird s**t. Sara live is so wonderful it does not need touching yet they went to great efforts to touch the song for the album. Yet of all the Don't Stop performances, this is the one they picked. Strange. no?

(note to someone: I know the record company selects the songs so please hold the lecture. But the band could have corrected this)

The Live album has always been probably my favorite because back then Fleetwood Mac live vs the studio was like a different band. When I lived in West Palm Beach there used to be a hard rock station that never played anything from Fleetwood Mac because of course they were not hard rock. However, they would play the live album's Oh Well. Lindsey is on fire and John and Mick are flaming even more. Listen to that bass and Micks ending. Damn they were tight! (OMG, I said damn twice on this post ..now 3 times)

Also, regarding why certain songs were chosen and not others. This album was compiled (rather quickly I would assume) at the end of the tusk tour, perhaps it may have started during breaks in the tour, not sure. My point is, I'm betting they were all extremely washed out from the road and the substances. The bands involvement could of been extremely limited, even at that time.

I would imagine tapes were more carefully listened to and compared in recent years when compiling the Tusk Deluxe sets etc.

I think those newish songs were from July 1980 and that it was sort of a rehearsal for the final leg of the tour. (They were previously off the road in June and the final leg didn’t start until August.) We have a couple of “Fireflies” and “Farmer’s Daughter” versions that are all very close (save a piano track here and there), but why the band ran through three new ones, I’m just not sure. Maybe they planned to try some of them in concert.

On the album proper, the songs NOT recorded on the 1979–80 tour are:

Monday Morning
Say You Love Me
Dreams
Rhiannon
Over My Head
Don’t Let Me Down Again
Don’t Stop

The “Sara” vocal has always both fascinated and baffled me. It sounds nothing like her 1979–80 vocals on tour. In fact, it sounds like that barrel-chested bronchial romanticism of the 1982 tour. It must have been recorded between the end of the tour (September) and the album release (December), but there is still no logical explanation as to why it sounds the way it does, save that she was in some post-bronchitis distress and loved the sound of her singing. Sometimes, when I have partially recovered from a chest cold, I like the sound of my own singing. There’s a cavernous quality that my illness brings.

I don’t believe that the album had much in the way of instrumental doctoring, other than mixing, of course, but I think some of the vocals — like the chorus on “Go Your Own Way” — were modified in studio. But nothing truly major, the way “The Dance” was polished up. Listen to the latter and then listen to the Irvine Meadows radio simulcast (Westwood One) from the tour and you can hear what the band really sounded like playing together.

As for why that “Don’t Stop” was picked for inclusion, possibly because it was so easy to mix given that it was from a publicity video they shot a few years before and were already using for marketing. (You saw it on TV to advertise Rumours in 1977.) But I love the way it peters out and Christine comments on the broken string — it’s so loose and impromptu, so indicative of the frame of mind the band were in during the Tusk years.

Incidentally, several of those inner-sleeve photos are from the final two shows at the Hollywood Bowl, including the shot of Stevie in her velour riding jacket with her leg up on the kick drum. She took that pose for a solid minute or two during the raging finale of “Go Your Own Way.”

Ahhh . . . where are the snows of yesteryear? Aye, where are they? Nostalgia infects my soul, and memories, yellowing with antiquity, infuse my spirit with a mellowing contentment.

Also what's weird about that version of Sara - if it is from '80, it's not at that super fast tempo that most of the Sara's from 80 had i.e. richfield and tucson. It sounds closer to the temp of the 79 shows.

I have no doubt that the instrument track is from one of the nights in St. Louis (1979), as advertised. If you’re inclined, compare the tempo with the tempo from the video. Should be pretty darn close, if not identical. The opening vocal stanza is not the studio — it’s an exact match with the live vocal. The discrepancy makes you scratch your head: if you are rerecording the vocal in the studio, why wouldn’t you do the opening stanza too? I think there was a lot of cocaine around — things that happened in 1979 and 1980 were as inexplicable as anything that happened in the band in 1967 or 1971.

Perhaps the album vocal is from one night on tour where Stevie had some chest cold, and was included so as not to duplicate the plans for the video documentary. If Richard Dashut is still compos mentis, someone should ask him.

Sara is supposed to be from Cleveland, right? I remember years after having the Live album and I downloaded the Cleveland boot and heard Sara and was like, what the hell? The difference was, as you said, very noticeable!

Don't Stop with that clunky ending is weird but just seems to fit in. That version of Go Your Own Way was always so wild for me when I first got into the band after really only knowing The Dance live version and the snippet of the Mirage video that you see during Behind the Music. Then I found better versions as the years went on...and THEN the Tusk Deluxe release with the version from Wembley just blew every other one I ever heard away.

There's an episode of Friends where Phoebe finally sings "good" while sick. She spends the episode trying to remain or re-get sick to get that husky voice back.

I need to get a mini-USB cord to hook up an old external hard drive with all my old downloaded bootlegs on it. That Irvine Meadows show from the 1997 tour is a nice complement to the polished nature of The Dance - I love that version of Oh Daddy and a decent version of Stand Back as well.

I'm worried about Richard. He's been MIA on facebook for a very long time.

Ok I stand corrected - apparently they recorded 60 concerts according to Ken C. in 2001!

Hi, Ken. The chance to ask you about your work is a really serious kick for a Machead like me. I am very grateful to you & Marty for providing this opportunity to get your take on things.

I'm a big fan of Mac's 1980 "Live" album, but I would have preferred a single concert recorded for posterity (there was talk at the time of releasing the tour-ending Hollywood Bowl shows as an album). Do you know why the decision was made to release a collection of recordings from various tours & venues? Did the band feel that picking & choosing from various tours & cities gave them the opportunity to compile stronger performances? I think a live album of a single gig (the Band's "The Last Waltz" or James Brown's "Live at the Apollo" or even Mac's "The Dance") gives the recording strength because the set is allowed to build the way it was planned, & it has that unified sense of time & place which is so important to a great concert. (David, Los Angeles, California, USA)

Thank you for the kind words. We recorded for over 60 concerts of Fleetwood Mac around the world. The problem is that some shows had one song that was performed so amazing that you would have wanted that included in the album, yet others in the show had problems. The band wanted to get the best performance of each song and felt that they did not want to go into the studio and "fix" problems, they wanted the public to hear the actual performance untouched. The Dance was recorded on a sound stage with very good isolation, enabeling the band to go in and overdub parts, perfecting the show. This is what the Eagles did too. Thanks,

If there is only 7-10 recorded shows for each tour, I'm guessing they are including the album master tapes for Tusk on that inventory list.

"This is kind of an behind the scenes question. I've always wondered if ALL the shows from the past Fleetwood Mac tours were recorded on the mixing board and stored away. Also this brings up another thought, how does the record companies keep track of all the master tapes and how are they stored? Do they have a tendency to deteriorate in storage? Thanks so much for your time. (Alex, New York, USA)"

No, generally 7-10 shows from each tour would have been recorded. All the tapes are stored at a huge temp controlled vault and tracked by computer database, by audio or video. The other day I call and talked the head of the vault and ask him to fax me a list of tapes for Tusk...in 10 minutes I had about 3 pages of tapes in my hand.

Maybe the opening stanza of Sara was not changed because its the best opening stanza ever. Of every live version of Sara, THIS is my favorite. IMHO, I dont care for the long drawn out fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre. I attribute that more to her solo version of Sara. IMHO, the shorter stanza, the better.
Although the opening stanza matches the vocal exactly through the entire song IMHO.

Sara is supposed to be from Cleveland, right?
Supposed to be (much of it is) from St. Louis November 1979.

Some of y’all might remember that, about twenty years ago Maureen Loftus snagged a bunch of concert audio soundboards and packaged them with annoying labels and sold them through her fan lists. St. Louis November 1979 was one of them. She included all the songs from the concert untouched (although some of the tracks have really annoying cuts that she herself made).

Say You Love Me, The Chain, Dreams, Not That Funny, Rhiannon, Over and Over, Oh Well, Sara, What Makes You Think, Oh Daddy, Save Me a Place, Landslide, Tusk, Angel, You Make Loving Fun, I’m So Afraid, World Turning, Go Your Own Way, Sisters of the Moon, Blue Letter, and Songbird.

For the first time (unless we happened to attend the show at the Checkerdome), we heard the full performance of Sara, which I uploaded here:

https://gofile.io/d/es5lOP

You can hear what’s what. The opening stanza appears on both the 1980 live album and the video documentary. A shortened version of the rest of the vocal appears on the documentary, and a completely different vocal appears on the 1980 live album for reasons unknown.

Omg Maureen...wow this brings back some memories. Her and this other dude sold exclusive leaked goodies back then. I think the dudes name was James John??? Something like that.

WTF ever happened to them. I was always a bit disappointed in how much tape hiss was on the Baton Rouge ‘78 and Memphis ‘82 boots, but I suppose that was out of their control. They always kind of over sold them as these pristine recordings which they were not.

Did the mysterious box of board tapes ever get leaked from the guy in Australia who fell off the face of the earth too?

Oh jeez, I wonder if one of these two are who I bought my one and only paid bootleg purchase off eBay probably in '99 or 2000? The aforementioned Memphis '82 show. Somewhere around the house I still have the two CD's complete with their printed-at-someone's-home "cloud" label with fancy italicized font.

Definitely was not the sound I was expecting but still an interesting view into the Mirage Tour. Pretty sure Lindsey was completely smashed by the time he got to Go Your Own Way. His "thank you for coming" speech during the intro was a bit drunky sounding and the big solo comes to a ramshackle ending.

It’s great to hear the full version of that Sara from the music video. Thank you for sharing. It sounds so much better than what is on the live album. I wonder why they redid the vocals. The instruments sound better too on this one.

Also, I really like the slightly faster tempo Sara from 1980 and especially 1982. Lindsey does a slightly different guitar riff in 1982 and I love it. I wish they were adding a live 1982 Sara to this deluxe reissue or they put it on Deluxe Mirage.

I'm all about the Rhiannon on Live!! By far my fave of that song.. lurv it.

Here's a pro-shot of 'Sara' from the Tusk Tour (courtesy of 'TheSuperFleetwoodMac') who had posted this before, though it seems it was later taken down. Don't know the exact show date.

Interestingly, when Billy Burnette and Rick Vito joined up in 1987, Christine and the rest of the band gushed about them. She said how fun the new guys are, and complained how Lindsey never used to smile on stage. Not sure about that - Lindsey and Christine look pretty lovey-dovey at the 4:38 time-mark. :xoxo:

Sara is just so lovely when FM does it; it sounds cheesy when any of her solo bands did it, even on the BD tour with great players like Roy Bittan and Benmont on keyboards. The solo versions relied way too heavily on synthesized keyboards and really what drives the song is the rhythms of Mick and John, with the keys and guitars layered on.

Yes definitely. Sara lacked the passion musically with her solo bands. Christine on the bench piano, Lindsey, Mick, and John give the song its original intent.

The only Mac song that I like better in her solo career was the first 2 tours of Gold Dust Woman. They made the song a very dark rocker. Everything after those tours was a joke especially the 1989 version of GDW. Horrific cheezy synth keyboards.

Her solo versions of Gypsy and Angel were also painful. I would say the more current solo-Gypsy's are improved but Waddy just doesn't have the same...finesse? And to be fair, Gypsy has sucked solo or band for 20 years.

I'd have to go back and listen to Gold Dust Woman from those tours but wasn't it a rather dark performance by the Mac on the Rumours tour as well? Stevie's solo stuff from her third tour until her '94 tour is rather unlistenable to me. I can never understand the love of her Red Rocks video by some people. It hurts my ears to listen to that.

I would argue that Gold Dust Woman was always done well by Fleetwood Mac. Even in the last decade plus, crackpot dancing notwithstanding, musically it's always been pretty good.

I dont mean in any way GDW was never done well by Fleetwood Mac. I just like the raw guitar riffs by Waddy and Benmont's keyboards. The tempo of her early solo days of the song improved the song for a live performance. It was different than the Mac's version. For an opening number, it fit pretty well.

Really? I also googled and only saw a piano bench too. Where I come from, we call the upright piano a bench piano. It looks like a bench, no?

In grade school, the music teacher would push in the bench piano to the classroom and she/he would play music and we would sing. After class the teacher would say, can someone help Ms Rogers push the bench piano.

Where I come from we also refer to shopping carts as buggies
We call rubber bands gum bands
We call a vacuum a sweeper

One difference that I noticed is that south of the Mason Dixon line more or less is that people call a grocery bag a sack. I once asked a girl while in the Ozarks and while holding a grocery bag "isn't this a bag'" and she replied "no a bag is an old lady".

On the rare occasion that I get a young clerk that looks like they have a sense of humor, when they ask if I want a bag, I'll say, "no thanks, I'm married, and she's at home".

Almost nobody ever gets it, but I'll spend the rest of the day laughing.

I'm in Miami now. There is actually a Pittsburgh accent. Bill Cowher is the poster child for that accent. I don't think I have one but a few years ago I went to an eye doctor here in Florida and he asked me if I was from Pittsburgh. I was shocked. He was from Pittsburgh and picked up on it. Yes we say pop too. TN is also part of the Appalachian valley.

It was the Jersey Shore of W/VA. It actually got cancelled because it was so controversial. Anyway, about 15 years ago when it was on I was flicking past the channels and it was on. Nope. A great song too (Stevie's Mirage songs were all fantastic) and given Lindsey's Mirage Tour hat, country's popularity at the time (I'm thinking early 80's TV...Dallas...big hats and cowboy boots), I think it would have been a fantastic song to do on tour.

Always nice to find out there are other Western PA folks around on the board. Catching up on the thread and I also knew as soon as I hit buggy that someone was from the land of 'jagoffs' and Primanti Bros.

Glad to see that this album is getting remastered. Planning to pick this one up as I have yet to get it on any format. (Once I track down a copy of the 75 deluxe box I'll even have them all!) Someone mentioned that The Dance should be done and I completely agree. And someone also seemed to think that BTM was a possibility...I doubt that. The Rumours 5 is the cash cow and they're just about out of things to remaster for that lineup. I don't even think Say You Will could get this kind of treatment.

Folks both young and old say buggy in TN. I don't know why I hate that word so, but I cringe every time I hear someone say it. Especially someone young. I wanna slap them!:p

The Rumours 5 is the cash cow and they're just about out of things to remaster for that lineup. There seems to be plenty of live audio left in the safe deposit box — stuff that keeps getting released in trickles, a little here, a little there. Whether there’s a real market for it outside of us rabid Macheads, I do not know. But the stuff is there, somewhere. We’ve been yammering for more of the Forum 1982 tracks for thirty years, and now some more of it is being trickled out (including that “Chain” from the second night). I think only Rhino would release old live audio like this.

The other thing we don’t know of course is just how much studio audio is in storage on reel-to-reel tape. When we get a product like Tusk Deluxe with fifteen or twenty extra items on it, does that represent most of what archivists found, half of what they found, or just a smidge of what they found?

I would love for there to be untapped reserves...but when the hell are they going to get around to releasing them? When these albums hit 50?! A box of live shows from the tours the Rumours era lineup did would be great. Full shows from peak eras...yes. But it would definitely be a narrow market. I'm slightly surprised they're going the full deluxe route with 'Live' to be perfectly honest. For a band that's as big as FM was/is they really don't seem to have anyone handling their legacy all that well. But that isn't anything surprising in the end, is it?

The concert audio on the three good deluxe albums and this new deluxe Live are heaven sent, to be sure, and kind of surprising. What it has demonstrated isn’t necessarily that someone at Rhino is pushing the envelope (every big old band is releasing deluxe, and this is only following the model) but that the material itself has been storaged and is retrievable if someone with the security clearance is looking for it. That’s what amazes me. I assumed that old studio tracking and concert audio were allowed to deteriorate or disappear by this stupid band and its irresponsible caretakers.

So the things we heard about over the years (like the fully recorded 1980 Hollywood Bowl shows) probably do still reside somewhere where they can be retrieved. If you live long enough, you may hear it. (I think of a few fans I knew who died before hearing a lot of this material and it’s sad and pathetic.)

Have I lost it or anyone else hearing this?

I thought so, too. The guitar was definitely from the 82 shows. And Stevie’s cry at the end of each verse was definitely from the Mirage tour. Glad it was confirmed that the actual date was from October 1982.

True. They also had contractual solo stuff. Stevie was into The Wild Heart and Warner Brothers was pushing for Christine's solo album. Lindsey also did not care for touring at this time and was also going solo. If it had not been for their solo engagements, I bet the Mirage tour would have went much longer.
Stevie loves to brag about herself how devoted she was to the Mac for her to make her first solo tour so short and then ran into the studio for Mirage. What she does not tell you is the band was under contract for the next album to be released so she really had no choice. However, her record company made sure she ran equally fast in the other direction to get the Wild Heart out. The Mirage tour ended 10/31/82. The Wild Heart was released in May 1983. She was married and honeymooned early in 1983 and her solo tour was in rehearsals in April 1983.

I still bet she was busy. Her tour was over in December 1981. The album was released in June 1982. In those 6 months, the album was finished, photo shoots, and 2 very time intensive videos were shot. Back in the 80s they used to say their overdub process in making albums took a very long time. The mixing and overdub process was probably pretty exhausting. Also remember there were excellent tracks that were recorded yet not on the album like Smile At You. Her voice is more raw on that track compared to the rest of the album so maybe that was recorded after her solo tour. 1980-1983 she really did work non-stop.

I love the Mirage-era Chain. Lovely, weird and complicated guitar intro from Lindsey, where he seems to be playing a melody line with his thumb, rather than his more normal style, where his thumb does the bass work to a melody from his fingers. A bit like the fab solo in Gypsy.

It did always seem like there was a battle between Stevie and Lindsey to get the last word in during The Chain around this time, with Stevie dropping in last minute 'Yeahs' and moans, and Lindsey dragging out his 'never break the chain' as long as he could...

I think is what I love most about the Mirage Tour. All the extra woah's and yeah's and attempts to be about as different as possible than the recordings. Once you have all the backup singers added on future tours, it's just not as genuine sounding, though I get it...older, less drugs, etc. Go Your Own Way is another gem where Lindsey and Stevie seem to be battling it out to have the last word

It has only managed to reach gold in the U.S. a major disappointment considering Fleetwood Mac's status in 1980 . Like I pointed out earlier for comparison the Eagles double live released just a few weeks before Fleetwood Mac Live went platinum six times over .

Even though FM has always been my #1 band, The Eagles have always been the #1 band in America, with FM being #2. Their appeal is more universal, and they marketed themselves much better than FM.

Can you begin to imagine having an idiot/junkie like Mick managing one of the biggest bands in the world? No wonder they finally fired him.

I'm not pleased with the selections that were chosen for this collection because I have all but one or two of them in my bootleg archives. Angel from Cleveland is a track I play on a regular basis because my copy is outstanding and the vocal and musical arrangement are so different from the record. It is wonderful and you can literally hear the excitement the band has in performing it.The only thing I can hope for is that this upcoming released version sounds BETTER than the copy I have been enjoying for umpteen years.
IMO any song chosen for this release like The Chain, should sound better than any previously Chain versions we have gotten from them. And it's not. The Chain from the Mirage video was outstanding. The Chain from the Tusk Deluxe set from Wembley is outstanding. This new one is meh in performance and dynamic sound quality. This GDW is horrible compared to other ones from the Rumours Tour. I really wish they would contact me, put me in a room with all their live tapes, let me listen to them for a year and then hand them the songs I feel could best represent them.

This GDW is horrible compared to other ones from the Rumours Tour.I guess that the GDW from Rumours Deluxe is from Nashville, Columbia, Oklahoma City, or Tulsa — I don’t know which. I only have Nashville and Oklahoma City and I haven’t bothered to cross-compare. But I played the latest GDW and the older GDW on my laptop the other day, and I really like the sound quality on the latest a lot better. The older one sounds a little muffled by comparison.

Lately, the Rhino site has been listing Monday Morning and World Turning from Rumours Deluxe as having been recorded Aug 29, 1977, at the Forum. How can that be? I doubt Lindsey was performing Monday Morning on an acoustic guitar as late as the end of August. He may have been using an acoustic very early in the tour. Plus, the August 29 show was not originally part of the advertising for the Deluxe live tracks (just the four I already mentioned). So there is incompetence and error all around with these tour stop labels. Really irksome.

This reminds me of when Nancy Sinatra once said that all of The Rat Pack Vegas performances were recorded. And the tapes are just sitting around somewhere.

There are hundreds of live tapes, sound board tapes, better quality than any the fans have circulated, complete with unscripted, unplanned moments we don't know about yet. And no one will ever hear them, except maybe some bored relative a generation or two from now who might make them available after all of the people who really cared are dead.

Surely true. But unless they’ve been transferred or duplicated, they’re disintegrating. Magnetic tape, film stock, vinyl all deteriorate. Unless the curators take action, everybody loses. The tour-ending Hollywood Bowl concerts were probably recorded, because the original plan was to release a live album of those gigs. But those recordings are already forty-one years old. What’s amazing about the live cuts on the deluxe sets isn’t that someone at Warner/Rhino decided to release them but that there was anything left to work with, forty years later. Maybe there has been some responsible curation all these years. I never would have thought so.

It has only managed to reach gold in the U.S. a major disappointment considering Fleetwood Mac's status in 1980 . Like I pointed out earlier for comparison the Eagles double live released just a few weeks before Fleetwood Mac Live went platinum six times over .
The Tusk hangover is what led to dim album sales. If they had released a live Rumours album, it would have sold similar to the Eagles live album. This is why Warner Brothers put up resistance to this album. Tusk got such flak which is remembered but not the scale of negativity. When Christine introduces a Tusk song "We havent played anything from Tusk so we are going to try some out tonight for you......." The crowd is silent. They did not want to hear Over and Over. People hated Tusk. The song Tusk was actually on a list of worst songs ever on a radio station countdown of the worst songs ever. Mick was the only one forcing the album to happen which everyone threw in his face "I told you so" when it also had disappointing album sales. The band was a platinum album band and the Live album sales embarrassed the band. However its probably one of Mick's best decisions ever. The Mac live was a different animal in the 70s and its so wonderful they were recorded and shared with the world. This is album so so much better than the Dance. OMG I cant even compare them.

What's surprising is how well Mirage did. Because it's nothing like Rumours. Hold Me and Gypsy really carried that album. I'm glad Hold Me is a duel vocal.

I was way too young to be aware of it in real time but I'd have to agree that Hold Me and Gypsy were so strong that they were the primary reasons that Mirage sold so well. And not just the songs but the videos too.

I've never understood why Live didn't sell. I LOVED it the day it was released. It had a good mix of songs from the different albums. It made me love Oh Well, too!
Mick's life has been a cornucopia of bad decisions, but this fell into his 1% of good decisions.

And it's far superior to The Dance. The overdubs on The Dance are so blatantly obvious that it bugs me to even watch it. Not that Live doesn't have overdubs, but at least they didn't erase all of the warts for a complete whitewash.

It did not sell well because Tusk sort of killed the band with maintream rock stations which were huge in the late 70s and early 80s. They did not play Tusk and did not play Sara. I think some of them dug deep to try and find a rock song and Sisters was played a little. The live Eagles album was played tons on rock stations. I think people did not give them a second look after Tusk came out. The Mac sort of jumped the shark at that time which is why today on classic rock stations you only hear songs from the White Album and Rumours.
I love to tell this story but when I lived in West Palm Beach in the mid 90s there was a hard rock station (and I mean hard rock, no classic rock unless it was AC DC or Zep or Hendrix. They played Oh Well from the live album. I was floored but even they knew the song would go over so well with a hard rock audience.
Remember during the Mirage show at the US Festival where Lindsey announces a song from Tusk and Christine says to the audience "the album you guys hated"
She has a wicked sense of humor. After Tusk, few knew how to define the band. They were nor breaking down doors at the record store to buy Tusk and they certainly did not care about a live album mostly recorded on that tour.
That was all "real time." Looking back to the hardcore fans and the band members, they appreciate Tusk for its greatness. I too love the album but I hate what it did to the band. The counter reaction the band did because of Tusk put pressure on Lindsey to now be chasing corporate radio friendly songs which is so anti-Tusk when you think about it. Mirage had to be successful and radio friendly or the band could disband. Tango needed to get Mick out of bankruptcy and needed to be radio friendly have a 5 year hiatus.

I think it was a perfectly acceptable idea for the band to produce a live album in 1980. The tour was a great success commercially and artistically, after all. In fact, it was the biggest box office for US arenas that year, said Billboard. Remember the big spread congratulating Mac on that? But something about the live album just didn’t have much appeal to radio — maybe it was the weirdness. My problem with that album, I guess, is that it comes across as just a bunch of individual snapshots of sounds. It doesn’t arc dramatically the way other live albums do. Some other albums drew from numerous concert stops but they did so in a way that blended pretty seamlessly. You weren’t aware of the disparate geographies in the Stones’ Love You Live album, or Rainbow’s On Stage album, or the P-Funk Earth Tour album, or Jackson Browne’s Running on Empty. But Mac Live is an overtly varied parade of noises and vocals and audience responses. You could hear an occasional track on LA rock radio — “Monday Morning,” maybe, or “Rhiannon” — largely because the LA DJs were so Mac-friendly. (They played “Tusk” too, and I’ve already talked about how USC drove the popularity of that song regionally.) But essentially Live just came and went. It was released the day Lennon was shot, and the Mac tour was three months over. There really was no statement to be made from the band at that point, except possibly to itself. I bring up the scattershot quality as a probable reason for its lack of appeal, but I don’t think a unified approach (all from one big night in Munich, say) would have made any difference.

The rock stations may have rejected Sara, but Sara was all over the pop stations. I kept hearing it everywhere and I said, “Who IS this?” I’d heard their earlier hits and liked them, but I never actively sought the band out before. I never said, “I have to have this” before.

Well, also, looking back, maybe it was not just the haunting power of Sara, because when the White album came out, I was a kid and did not have spending money. Maybe that’s why I never tried to buy anything of theirs before. By the time Tusk was released, I was older and had money to spend on clothes and music. But anyway, Sara was a radio favorite.

Sara was huge. No doubt but those pop radio stations would never be playing or promoting the live album. Rock stations would have if Tusk had some rock chops or rock hits. Seven Bridges Road from Eagles live 1980 was a staple of almost every rock station throughout the early 80s. That song live really promoted the hell out of that album. The harmonies were incredible. The live album could have had a similar impact if Tusk was a different album IMHO. Just imagine if in 1978 Fleetwood Mac released a live album off the back of Rumours. It would have been HUGE. Tusk was not a huge seller and the live album was a total flop for the band who had been selling millions of copies of albums up to that moment. Having said all this, I am a HUGE fan of the live album and its one of my favorite of all time. So thankful it was done because some of the songs are pure gold. Just explaining why IMHO the album tanked. I also tend to like albums that are not that commercially successful.

THIS. Gypsy especially. MTV was new and hot. The video for Gypsy is(IMO) what really caught people's eye to Mirage.

It did for me. That video was the perfect visual complement to that song. Had there been no music videos at the time, I suspect “Hold Me” would still have reached #4 in the US, because it’s just that kind of song—a surefire hit. “Gypsy” would likely have done well, too, but I doubt it would have had such longevity in the public imagination without the video. This is not a knock at that song, which is lovely, but an acknowledgment of how crucial visuals were in Stevie Nicks’ mass appeal. Christine made and sang earworms. We didn’t need to see “Say You Love Me” or “Everywhere” in order to be charmed by them. In fact, they were made to be savored on airwaves. But Stevie’s power is so completely tied to her stage presence, her theatrical skills in song performance.

I was already neck deep in my fandom when Mirage came along, so I'd have worshiped it regardless, but the Gypsy video truly seemed like a work of art at the time.

It's amazing how quickly $he slid downhill with her drug use, song writing, and voice. From the Bella Donna masterpiece in 1981 to the TURD OSOTM in 1989. Drugs are bad kids....

And yes, Chris is the earworm queen! It amazing how she always finds such catchy hooks!

"The Farmer's Daughter" (Beach Boys Cover)

As promised, we'll have a short ride through some "outtakes" from Tusk - I thought it would be good to talk briefly about a couple live tracks
from the Tusk tour that did not make the album. I'm not sure there are really any "true" outtakes but there are a couple of songs to discuss. First up is
"The Farmer's Daughter", which first appeared on the 1980 release "Fleetwood Mac Live". This song is a cover of The Beach Boys track from from their 1963 album Surfin' USA. The sleeve for the LIVE album indicated that this song was recorded at a soundcheck in Santa Monica, CA, but there is some evidence indicating that it may be a studio track after all. It seems our Fleetwood Mac heroes were possibly telling a little lie about this track.

One of the clues that this track was not among those recorded at the soundcheck was that for the 2004 re-release of "Tusk", "The Farmer's Daughter" was included as a bonus track and the liner notes indicated "tracks recorded at Village Recorders". The version appearing in the 2004 release also did not have any crowd noise in the beginning or end of the track, but the version sounds nearly identical to the song on the live album. The 2004 version does sound like a different mix, but that's about it. The song was released as a single, but did not do very well, except for in Austria - where it cracked the top 10. I was going to post a pic of the sleeve , but I never have any luck with that on this site, and maybe some kind soul could do that.

I never knew much about how this song came to be until I read the story in an earlier SH forum thread. The story actually comes from the John Stebbins book - The Real Beach Boy - Dennis Wilson. The story is basically told the same way in Ken Caillat's book too.

"One night, while Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were working at Village Recorders, Dennis, Christine, and Ed Roach stopped by. "We all started talking about Brian," remembers Roach. "Stevie and Lindsay were saying what big Beach Boys fans they were when they were teenagers." Then, in a casual a cappella style, Buckingham and Nicks started singing Brian's old song "The Farmer's Daughter" from Surfin´ USA. Dennis teased Christine, saying, "See, I told you we were good." At that point, Dennis and Ed left the studio to paint the town. In the early morning hours, they returned, worn out, to pick up Christine. "We knocked on the studio door and Christine unlocked it to let us in," recalls Roach. "She had tears rurming down her face and said, 'My God I was hoping it was you guys!"' When Dennis asked, "What's the matter? Are we late?" Christine just led them quietly back into the studio. She wanted them to hear what had made her so emotional. Lindsay, Stevie, and Christine, all fighting tears, played back the arrangement of "The Farmer's Daughter" they had been working on all night. "Dennis freaked out when he heard it, and he started crying, too," says Roach. A short time later, their beautiful rendition of Brian's classic song would reach a whole new audience as a cut on a Fleetwood Mac live album."

It's a great story and a great track - the harmonies are truly stunning and Lindsey's guitar work is awesome - much different than anything else he was doing at the time. He was using a "Fender Bass VI" guitar, which gave the track that nice, warm sound. The reason I'm not sure this should be called an "outtake", is that I'm not sure it was ever seriously considered to be included on the album and I always thought it was mainly recorded for fun or as a potential "B-side" to a single. I thought it worked great as a closer for the live album and a nice treat to have a "new" song.

Has anyone ever been able to decipher the last verse that Stevie sings on this live version of Sisters of the Moon? I've heard her do it a few other times as well. The most I can pick out is "where have the white birds flown; have they flown so very far". I can't make out the last two lines.
