Really enjoyable interview. What he says about Lindsey and Stevie joining the band is very sweet.

Why surprised? Mick said so since 1990 or so I read:
I told him I wanted Lindsey Buckingham to be the new guitarist in Fleetwood Mac, and what did he think? Olsen replied that Lindsey was part of a team, the other half of which was his girlfriend, Stevie Nicks. They had a band called Buckingham Nicks and were very much a pair. Keith said he didn't think Lindsey would be interested in joining Fleetwood Mac without Stevie. Without hesitating, I told him that I wanted them both. Then I called Mickey Shapiro and said, "I met these guys and am asking them to be in the band."
Now if he changed the story in 2018 or any other moment, just to please Stevie, or for any other reason, it was too late, cause he already wrote he wanted Lindsey. And in the Rumours Classic albums video (1997), Lindsey said he answered he and Stevie were a "package deal", too.

He has always said that. Stevie knows that as well. She has said countless times the band needed a guitarist so bad they were willing to take a chance on his girlfriend.
Also, this is why Stevie referred to herself as the "house cat."

I was surprised because he said to Alec it's true he only wanted Lindsey. I heard what you shared which is he wanted them both. He did hire Stevie so ultimately he did want her.
And then he told Alec that Lindsey was loyal and merciful to Stevie and did not desert her. And I like how he said it was clear that their sound was a duo, like The Everly Brothers.
Just a fantastic interview.

Which essentially the same thing Keith Olsen said.
“Then I got a call on New Year’s Eve, and Mick says, “I’ve had some bad news. Bob Welch just decided to leave the band. So, that fellow in that band you played me—would you see if that guy would like to join my band?” And I said, “Well, they’re going to come as a set. Because they’re very much into their own thing, and the only chance of getting them to drop that would be to bring them both on.” And he says, “Well, maybe that will work. Can you see if you can convince them to join my band?”

Yeah, he went into the call wanting the guitarist he’d heard playing the solo that reminded him of Danny Kirwan. He wasn’t aware that it was a package situation. Once he was, he wanted them both. Not only did Fleetwood Mac need a guitarist, but they needed to fill up 2/3 of an album, since Bob had been the band’s main songwriter.
Lindsey may be the one who’s embellished the story a bit. Because according to Mick’s 1990 account and Keith Olsen’s, I don’t see where Lindsey was ever offered the gig without Stevie.

In Stevie's bitter Street Angel days when she was both pissed at Mick and Lindsey and just bitter her record was not selling, she unleashed her feelings how she was never originally wanted in Fleetwood Mac in multiple interviews.
This is why Lindsey was so instrumental to her big career. Not only did he make her songs beautiful but he insisted Stevie come along. It would have been easy for Lindsey to say, let me try this out. If I dont like it, I will leave and make my own band or something. He was very daring to insist his gf come along. Not many musicians would risk blowing such a deal. I think Stevie said they were paid $400 per week once they joined. In 1975, $1600 per month was a pretty good salary

That would have been daring, but he was never offered the gig without Stevie and his instinct was to turn down the offer. It was Stevie who had to push him into joining the band, just like it was Stevie who pushed for them to move to Los Angeles. Without Stevie, he would have blown the deal.
ETA: More from the Keith Olsen interview about NYE 1974:
“So I drop what I was going to do on that New Year’s Eve, take my date, and we drive over to Stevie and Lindsey’s house. I said, “Hey, Happy New Year” and all of this—I brought over the obligatory bottle of bad champagne—and I said, “Can we talk? Mick Fleetwood would like you to join Fleetwood Mac.” Immediately, Lindsey said, “Oh, no, no—I couldn’t possibly play anything as good as Peter Green did. How am I supposed to get up there and play ‘The Green Manalishi’?” Finally I get them, by the end of the night, to try it on a trial basis for eight weeks.”

Bottom line, Lindsey was never asked to join without Stevie. The time between Bob quitting and Mick learning the equation that Lindsey was part of a package deal was pretty short. It’s very likely that within an hour of Bob leaving Mick told Keith to see if he could convince Lindsey AND Stevie to join the band. The second Mick understood the equation, which was during that call, the offer was for both of them. It’s not that they didn’t want Stevie, it’s that they didn’t know about her.

Except he was never offered the Fleetwood Mac gig without Stevie AND his inclination was to decline the offer. He wouldn’t have jumped without Stevie. Keith and Stevie had to convince him that joining the band was in everyone’s best interest.

you see life in only black and white. While they may have gotten drunk over margaritas on new years eve and asked THEM to join, you are brushing off the interest Mick had in Lindsey after Bob left. It was a process that led up to New Years Eve but fairly quick since Bob was still playing with the band in October 1974

you see life in only black and white. While they may have gotten drunk over margaritas on new years eve and asked THEM to join, you are brushing off the interest Mick had in Lindsey after Bob left.
The margarita night was later, not NYE, 1974.
On NYE, 1974, Fleetwood Mac had some type of get together/band meeting where Bob snapped at Christine, she told him to eff himself, and he announced he was leaving the band. After that, Mick called Keith Olsen and asked him if he thought Lindsey would join the band, Keith explained the equation, and Mick asked him to convince THEM to join. So, Keith went over to their place and spent all night trying to convince them (Lindsey) to join.
I don’t dispute the initial interest was in Lindsey, but within the span of a short phone call shortly after Bob quit, Stevie was part of the equation. Lindsey was never offered the Fleetwood Mac gig without Stevie. He was never actually in a position where he had to say “I won’t join without Stevie.”
The notion that he wouldn’t have joined without Stevie because he was noble or whatever is laughable. He wouldn’t have joined had Stevie not been there twisting his arm. Lindsey didn’t want to be in Peter Green’s old band. He didn’t want to play the old Fleetwood Mac songs. He had a chip on his shoulder that their music was going to get lost in Fleetwood Mac, that they were going to lose their identities within the band. And, by all accounts, he wasn’t easy to work with in the early years. Lindsey oozed resentment, which is something I doubt he’d disagree with.
It was a process that led up to New Years Eve but fairly quick since Bob was still playing with the band in October 1974
Bob was playing with them up until mid-December, close to the time Mick went to Sound City. So Mick had only known of Lindsey for a couple of weeks at most, but wasn’t immediately thinking about augmenting the band with him or anything.

Ever since 1997, they’ve been fuzzy with their history. They’ve embellished and romanticized some parts of their story while minimizing or flat out ignoring other parts. Mick’s 1990 comments mirror what Keith Olsen said, which leads me to believe that accounting.

Good lord, as others have noted, one could split hairs or count how many angels can stand on the head of a pin, or whatever, but the bottom line is the ONLY reason Buckingham Nicks were even considered for FM is because of Buckingham. Stevie was part of the package, an accessory that turned out to be essential.
The fact that Christine was given the chance to decide their fate over margaritas later on further demonstrates how much of an after thought Stevie originally was: Mick sought out Lindsey and only learned Stevie was there. In his recollections, he never once mentions either of the pair’s voices when he heard “Frozen Love.” He was listening to the guitar. End of.

I don’t believe anyone argued otherwise. That’s the one constant.
Where I have an issue is this notion that Lindsey, out of loyalty to Stevie, bravely and nobly stuck his neck out to insist that she also be included when, by what Mick said in 1990 and Keith Olsen said in 2012, there’s no evidence that he was ever offered the gig without her.
Furthermore, Lindsey was apprehensive about giving up Buckingham Nicks to go play Peter Green songs. His instinct was to turn them down. Stevie, Olsen, and even Waddy have all said that they had to convince him, sometimes in hours long conversations, that joining Fleetwood Mac was in their best interest.
The fact that Christine was given the chance to decide their fate
See, that’s why I think the first call after Olsen was to Mickey Shapiro.
In his recollections, he never once mentions either of the pair’s voices when he heard “Frozen Love.” He was listening to the guitar. End of.
Which makes me wonder if Mick even knew if Lindsey was a singer-songwriter when he called Olsen. The first thing the band needed was a guitarist, but they also needed songwriting, since Bob Welch had about 2/3 of the songs on MTM and HAHTF. This is another reason why I think too much has been made of them “only wanting Lindsey.”
SteveMacD
01-28-2021, 02:34 AM
Let’s just hypothetically say Lindsey alone was asked to join the band and he agreed joined, without Stevie.
The first thing stands out to me is that Buckingham Nicks made an album. Once the Brits eventually heard it, of course they would have heard the immediate potential of having those harmonies in their music. It’s not as if Fleetwood Mac’s songs didn’t have a lot of harmonies already, especially Christine’s songs. Wouldn’t adding even more complex harmonies to the songs make them even better? Also, wasn’t the remake of “Crystal” John’s idea?
If that didn’t happen, Keith Olsen was the one who encouraged them to leave Fritz and become a duo. It’s like he saw them as a singular entity that couldn’t be separated. At some point in the recording, I have no doubt that he’d suggest to Lindsey that Stevie’s harmony would add a lot of dimension to the chorus here or there.
If neither of those happened, do you really think Stevie wouldn’t have been hanging out in the studio all up everyone’s ass trying to weasel her way in the band? Like, when Christine and Lindsey would be working on harmonies that she wouldn’t have just started singing along? Or that she wouldn’t have been flirty with Mick? Or that she and Christine wouldn’t have gone out for girl talk over tea?
So, this notion that Lindsey could have just joined without Stevie is pretty unrealistic.

History is being re-written or needs to be corrected.
For decades Christine and other members of the band have stated the Mexican dinner was when Stevie and Lindsey were asked to join the band. It was up to Christine for her to feel our her chemistry with Stevie.
Remember Rock Trivia (the 80s board game) It was an actual question. When did Lindsey and Stevie join Fleetwood Mac? Dec 31, 1974
Also Rock stations frequently mention on New Years Eve after playing Fleetwood Mac state it is the anniversary of Stevie and Lindsey joining.
So everyone has been wrong about this?

Tell me more about this. I haven't heard this story.
He’s conflating two events mentioned in Mick’s book. Christine and Bob had a minor tiff backstage towards the end of the Heroes’ tour. He quit. (Shapiro says Bob had been planning to quit anyway.) There was a period of time when they thought they could convince him to stay. When they couldn’t, Mick realized he’d need to find another guitarist. Hence the New Year’s Eve call to Keith Olsen.

Mick's 1990 book:
Being without much in the way of cash, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were almost immediately put on salary, two hundred dollars a week each, as new members of Fleetwood Mac. We may have paid a little of their rent as well, but I can't remember. No one really had much money then; we were just surviving at that point.
Everything of Fleetwood Mac's was still in Bob Welch's name because we had no green cards that would let us work and earn money in the States. I remember that the $200,000 record advance from Warner Bros. to me, John, and Chris went directly into Bob's bank account and that years later he got a hell of a tax bill.

It was the night they learned FM wanted them, according to Mick's 1990 book:
On New Year's Eve, Stevie and Lindsey were having a little party at their house and wondering if 1975 was going to be a better year for them. Then Keith Olsen walked in and said, "Hey, I've got some news . . . Fleetwood Mac want you to join them."
It didn't specify if the meeting was the same night:
Later Stevie would give me a hard time. "Aaabhh, if I hadn't been with Lindsey you wouldn't have wanted me." And like that. All I can say is that I remembered this guitar player but couldn't remember his name. Keith Olsen called me back and said that Stevie and Lindsey were interested, and so we set up a dinner meeting at a Mexican restaurant called El Carmen. Lindsey came up to our house on Fernwood, off Laurel Canyon. Judy Wong was there too

In the documentary Fleetwood Mac....Don’t stop
I’m sure New Year’s Eve 1974 is mentioned as the night they went for a Mexican meal.
Judy Wong was there too
Again, per Keith Olsen in 2012:
https://www.premierguitar.com/articles/Studio_Legends_Keith_Olsen
So I drop what I was going to do on that New Year’s Eve, take my date, and we drive over to Stevie and Lindsey’s house. How am I supposed to get up there and play ‘The Green Manalishi’?” Finally I get them, by the end of the night, to try it on a trial basis for eight weeks.

Where I have an issue is this notion that Lindsey, out of loyalty to Stevie, bravely and nobly stuck his neck out to insist that she also be included when, by what Mick said in 1990 and Keith Olsen said in 2012, there’s no evidence that he was ever offered the gig without her.
I'm not disagreeing with anything you said in this quote. I just want to share that what Mick said in this new interview that I created this thread to post, Mick offers what I put in bold type above. So I'm wondering if that's to kind of get future cordiality with Lindsey in the "public record"
I'm not soliciting a reply either. I'm just curious why Mick is speaking this way. Maybe he's just feeling high on life with his recording rights sale!

Wouldn’t surprise me if there was some fence mending and wheel greasing going on between Mick and Lindsey.
Fleetwood Mac has already said no more large tours. Given Christine will be 78 and the virus has delayed any plans they had by at least a year and a half, it’s hard to imagine we’ll see much, if anything, from Fleetwood Mac again. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but it’s unlikely.
Mending fences is in their mutual interests. Mick is a drummer whose band likely played its last show and Lindsey is an artist who would greatly benefit from having the “Fleetwood” brand associated with his new music. The difference in album and concert ticket sales between “Lindsey Buckingham” and “Fleetwood Buckingham” (for example) would be significant.

78 is the new 50. President is 78, Jagger's 78, Bab's is 78, Debbie Harry and Patti Smith are up there too. I do recall hearing Christine may have arthritis though. She can shake the maracas.
Just expanding on Fleetwood Mac plans, I think Stevie told them in December 2019 that she needed two years away from FM to do her Rhiannon series and another solo tour (per Campbell). I still think FM would come out to do new entertainment facility openings but I doubt an album would happen ever again. Neil seems devoted to solidifying the new lineup of CH and Mike really wants Dirty Knobs to do the starting group bus tour and work their way up to bigger rooms.

Rick Vito In Concert at the Belly Up or An Evening with Lindsey Buckingham at Town Hall would.

Lindsey said (https://youtu.be/LtGzaPQtW_o?t=1123) at USC that Mick called him after meeting him unexpectedly at Sound City.
Lindsey met Mick when Mick was studio shopping at Sound City a couple of weeks before the big call. However, Mick’s 1990 account and Keith Olsen’s 2012 account of how Buckingham Nicks were offered the Fleetwood Mac job perfectly match up, which means that’s probably the way it actually happened.

That Lindsey, If Stevie had not listened to those albums front to back and back to front, he’d be a bum looking for handouts on the corner today.
Lindsey, given a choice, would rather have continued with Buckingham Nicks. That “pouty girlfriend” was also his musical partner for a project he strongly believed in. Lindsey didn’t want to go out on the road as a sideman, he wanted Buckingham Nicks to be a headlining act.
However, the reality is Buckingham Nicks was over the minute Mick Fleetwood called Keith Olsen. If Lindsey had refused, Stevie would have bolted on him, because the reality was Buckingham Nicks got dropped and didn’t have anything going for them, beyond a few cities in the Deep South, except for the offer from Fleetwood Mac. Stevie understood the equation and wanted to join the viable band because she was tired of being a waitress. It was the offer of a lifetime, even at that stage in the band’s history. Lindsey was still clinging to the dream, but that dream wasn’t going to come true, at least not the way he wanted.
Stevie, as half of the partnership, was the one saying that it was in their best interest to suspend the partnership and merge what they had been doing into Fleetwood Mac. So, while his guitar playing led to the phone call, she was the one who forced the issue.

Bob was playing with them up until mid-December, close to the time Mick went to Sound City. So Mick had only known of Lindsey for a couple of weeks at most, but wasn’t immediately thinking about augmenting the band with him or anything.
Lindsey was never offered the gig without Stevie because the people who were doing the asking were told that it would not be worth their time to offer him the FM gig if it didn't also include Stevie. Thus, to get him they said sure we're willing to ask both of them.
Had Olsen indicated that Lindsey would have been responsive to an offer for just him, that's the offer they would have made. Indeed that was the proposal Mick initially made to Keith. Keith was the one who first told Mick that to get what he wanted (LB) he needed to include SN.
So your comment is a red herring. They didn't ask him to join alone because before they could, or when they let it be known that is what they were interested in at the beginning, they were put off that by parties who knew him.
ETA: And Mick HAD heard the duo prior to wanting to ask LB to join. So he would have been aware of their harmonies and songwriting and all that. He still had planned to just ask LB to join until Keith Olsen advised him.

I don’t know that Mick was aware it was Lindsey singing or that he wrote songs. Per Olsen, he wanted “the guitarist from that band.” So, Mick may have been clueless to what Lindsey’s role in that was beyond the guitar solo.
And, no, the fact he wasn’t asked by himself isn’t a red herring. It’s actually a relevant point if people are trying to paint him as a loyal, noble partner for demanding she be included when he was never in a position where he had to make the demand.

They do that with a lot of stories. They’re also bad about leaving out key details if it means a more romanticized version of the story. Like, when Mick met Billy in 1981 at a Dick Clark anniversary taping, Mick neglects to mention that Billy’s drummer was Ian Wallace, Jenny Boyd’s second husband.

Keith Olsen didn’t say it so Lindsey wouldn’t have to, he said it because that was the reality of the situation.
Give me one realistic scenario where Lindsey and Stevie were still a couple and he joined the band without her. If they hadn’t been together, Lindsey would have turned the band down because he didn’t want to be in Fleetwood Mac. But, Lindsey and Stevie were a couple and a musical partnership. Fleetwood Mac would have listened to the Buckingham Nicks album, become more aware of what Lindsey had been doing prior to joining, heard her songwriting and their harmonies, heard the potential she and Lindsey had together, all with her hanging around them in the studio with a producer who championed the two of them in the first place. There was never Homer’s “f**k that b***h” fantasy scenario, to be clear.
So this canonization of someone for doing something he didn’t do and really didn’t need to do is ridiculous. The only one who actually went out on a limb was Mick Fleetwood.

And then Alec adds: “There is nobody who casts a spell on me like Christine McVie. I love her signing beyond belief. She does something to me I cannot my even describe...” RIGHT ON, Alec Baldwin!
Then, later, Alec talks about how much he love the Bob Welch-era albums, especially MYSTERY TO ME. He even cites (and plays) “Hypnotized.”
He doesn’t enthuse about Lindsey or Stevie in the same way. More generally, he mentions the collective achievement of the RUMOURS-era band, and the songs being everywhere. But he doesn’t talk about Stevie’s signing or cite any of their songs outside of the Tik Tok phenomenon.
I mention this only to remind all of us that there’s was so much more to this interview (including Mick’s interesting discussions of dyslexia and cocaine addiction).
Alec Baldwin is clearly a band fan. But he’s also a Christine (and Bob Welch) fan, and THAT’s worth mentioning!

"Tortured logic is the name we use for an argument that is very complex, and takes the listener on a long trip with many twists and turns, and requires much concentration to arrive at a conclusion mostly due to its complexity."
"Tortured logic is when you have no true support for your argument, so you stretch the limits of logic to an extreme to do so."
The only thing torturous is grown ass adults believing in something about as true as the Easter Bunny. You’re admiring the field of mushrooms and forgetting the pile of cow dung they’re growing out of. Lindsey saying he wouldn’t join without Stevie is every bit the load of crap as the big “Landslide” kiss on The Dance. It’s all BS. A staged, calculated, romanticized/fictionalized version of what really happened/who they are.
There was never a scenario where Lindsey joins Fleetwood Mac without Stevie while he and Stevie were still a couple that doesn’t end with her still joining the band. It was just as inevitable at that point as Christine joining Fleetwood Mac after Peter left.
Remember, we’re talking about the same woman who, at the height of her popularity and at the peak of her career, flew all over the world trying to get Tom Petty to put her in the Heartbreakers. If she was willing to put on that kind of pathetic display when she was one of the biggest rockstars in the world, can you imagine the scene she would have made at Sound City trying to get in a band that was doing everything she wanted to be doing that her boyfriend/musical partner with whom she’d made an album had just joined without her? At a minimum, she would have started cleaning John Mayall’s house in Laurel Canyon just for a character reference.
But, it likely wouldn’t have gotten to that point. It’s not like the band didn’t have a say in it, too. Listen to all of the albums from KH to HAHTF. Think of “Station Man,” “Morning Rain,” “Spare Me A Little,” “Remember Me,” “Dissatisfied,” “Believe Me,” “Just Crazy Love,” “Why,” “Heroes Are Hard To Find,” and “Come A Little Bit Closer.” What do you think the first thing Christine would have thought when she heard Buckingham Nicks?
Because, hate to break it to you, it wasn’t his guitar playing. She’d already played with Peter Green and Danny Kirwan. Lindsey’s a great guitarist, but he’s not at that level as a lead guitarist (which is why he didn’t want to join). No, the game changer for Christine was the harmonies. Plural.
Same for John, BTW.
So, let’s just dispel this glorified fan fiction that St. Lindsey, Lord of the Overdubs, high upon his horse, demanded that Stevie be included once and for all. She would have been in the band eventually anyway. It was really less Lindsey wouldn’t join without Stevie as it was you buy one, you buy both because that’s just how the Buckingham Nicks equation was.

What I would just say here is that it's not fan fiction but Mick and Lindsey manufactured fiction. Stevie went along with it as well. 1990 writing is one thing but Mick had different writing in the 2014 book and a different story again in this Baldwin interview...2 years after he fired Lindsey.
Either it's supreme memory loss or romanticization because most people have never heard of Keith Olsen.

There was never a scenario where Lindsey joins Fleetwood Mac without Stevie while he and Stevie were still a couple that doesnÂ’t end with her still joining the band. I don't know why you're insisting so vehemently on that while rejecting any other scenario as an Easter Bunny scenario. Between 1971 and 1975, Lindsey and Stevie weren't quite as tied at the hip as you imagine. He had done session work without Stevie and he had been on tour with an outfit without Stevie (she later said that he left her in Aspen at the time). For her part, in either 1972 or 1973, she went back up to the Bay Area without Lindsey, and in fact fell in love with someone else, seriously considering staying with this dude and to hell with Buckingham Nicks (and wrote the song "Destiny" about the little interlude). Stevie told Denny Somach in 1980 that she and Lindsey were breaking up already even before they decided to join Mac. So the perfectly plausible scenario is that Lindsey might have decided to take the band's offer to join, even temporarily, just to make some money. You can reject the scenario out of hand, but it's perfectly plausible. He of course still wanted the Buckingham Nicks thing to work, but had already demonstrated that he'd take a time-bounded job to tide him over. Stevie has indicated many times that, certainly by late 1974, she was sick of trying to push the Buckingham Nicks project (which for her meant holding down a crappy day job). She always gave me the sense that, by late 1974, she thought the project was a failure and should be abandoned (but she had nothing else to do except go home to mom and dad).
Because, hate to break it to you, it wasnÂ’t his guitar playing. That flies in the face of everything Mick has ever said about hearing all the guitar work on the BN album.
SheÂ’d already played with Peter Green and Danny Kirwan. LindseyÂ’s a great guitarist, but heÂ’s not at that level as a lead guitarist (which is why he didnÂ’t want to join).Well, of course LB, especially at that point, was no Peter Green -- as a guitarist OR a songwriter. But I doubt the Green legacy was driving the band's decisions during those chaotic years. Green was long gone, as was Kirwan. Welch, Weston, and Walker, and all their respective strengths and weaknesses, were undoubtedly much fresher in the minds of the McVies and Fleetwood. When Welch finally split, the band was nothing but a rhythm section and a singer-songwriter who preferred hanging back musically. Fleetwood Mac could have gone no further without hiring someone.
No, the game changer for Christine was the harmonies. Plural.Oh, now you are completely making that up out of thin air, or at least out of your own conjecture. Christine has NEVER said that she wanted Buckingham Nicks in the band BECAUSE of their harmonies on the BN album. For all you know, she never even listened to the BN album. She has only said that when Buckingham Nicks added live harmonies to HER songs in rehearsal, she loved it. By that time, they were already in the band. There is no evidence anywhere that she wanted anything but a lead guitarist.
Same for John, BTW.If you have any reliable evidence that John listened to the BN album BEFORE those two joined his band, spill it.
So, letÂ’s just dispel this glorified fan fiction that St. Lindsey, Lord of the Overdubs, high upon his horse, demanded that Stevie be included once and for all. Christine really cranked some mega hits. From SYLM to ALAYF. (Which wasn't as popular because; as bwboy stated, 'There was a huge shift in rock.)'
But she really put out some amazing songs and by the 80's, people took note of her. MTV put Christine's face on National TV as did VH1. Not in the Nicks craze way, but in the , "Wow, that's a beautiful melody, or hook, or funk, etc."

So the perfectly plausible scenario is that Lindsey might have decided to take the band's offer to join, even temporarily, just to make some money. You can reject the scenario out of hand, but it's perfectly plausible.
Lindsey was beyond apprehensive about joining Fleetwood Mac and really didn’t want to join the band. Read what Keith Olsen has said. Read what Stevie Nicks has said. Read what Waddy Wachtel has said. Furthermore, Lindsey didn’t enjoy being in the band once he joined. He was moody and could be outright acrimonious towards them. He resented everything he had been working on with Buckingham Nicks getting lost within Fleetwood Mac. Lindsey even had to get a pep talk from Bob Welch of all people when they were making that first album. So, no, I don’t see Lindsey taking their offer on his own.
That flies in the face of everything Mick has ever said about hearing all the guitar work on the BN album.
Except, I was talking about Christine’s hypothetical reaction to hearing the album if the band had somehow hired Lindsey without Stevie. Lindsey’s playing was good, but not something that would have caught her attention. Not after having played with Green and Kirwan. However, the harmonies would have caught her attention at some point.
When they went through “Say You Love Me” for the first time, that changed everything for Christine, and even John. They realized they had something special.
Well, of course LB, especially at that point, was no Peter Green -- as a guitarist OR a songwriter... When Welch finally split, the band was nothing but a rhythm section and a singer-songwriter who preferred hanging back musically. Fleetwood Mac could have gone no further without hiring someone.
This strengthens the case that they would have added Stevie after becoming aware of what Lindsey was coming from. They needed songwriting. Bob Welch had 2/3 of the last two albums.
Green was long gone, as was Kirwan. Welch, Weston, and Walker, and all their respective strengths and weaknesses, were undoubtedly much fresher in the minds of the McVies and Fleetwood.
Peter Green is always fresh in the mind of Mick Fleetwood.
Christine has NEVER said that she wanted Buckingham Nicks in the band BECAUSE of their harmonies on the BN album.
And, I never said she did. I was saying that, at some point after Lindsey hypothetically joined without Stevie, Christine would have listened to the album and that the harmonies, not the guitar playing, would have caught her attention. She was a songwriter who heavily used harmonies, so obviously she would have heard the potential.
You contradict yourself in your fanatical craze to push your own glorified fiction. The scenario of "You buy one, you get both" -- which you say you accept -- probably came from Lindsey (or, by extension, from Keith).
Not at all. It was just the reality. Have you ever been around a band where one of the guys has a girlfriend with ambitious musical aspirations? In this case, that girlfriend made an album with the band’s new guitarist, there’s a woman in the band he joined, and the two groups were stylistically similar. Do you really believe Stevie wouldn’t have been a factor if Lindsey had joined without her? She would have been hanging around the studio and traveling with them on tour…There was no getting just Lindsey.

Sure. It had nothing to do with it whatsoever. They didn’t play it up at all or make a big deal about it. I’m sure it’s purely coincidental in the video that during the second verse the “close your, close your, close your eyes” is John, Christine, Mick, and Stevie walking through the barn, the “No more broken hearts” is closeup of Lindsey, and the “we’re better off apart, let’s give it a try” was Lindsey walking away. No symbolism in any of that whatsoever.

If they had released a new album in 1988-89 that wasn’t complete corporate schlock, with a different producer, at least one passable Stevie Nicks song, and stronger contributions from the new guys, it might have worked. That said, an album by folks in their mid-40s was only going to have so much mainstream appeal.

I was thinking more Heart. Their albums were popular in the early 90s.
Help me: Before the Mexican restaurant meeting, did Mick call Lindsey and ask "Would you and Stevie like to join Fleetwood Mac?"
more/less - Mick got Lindsey's number from Olsen, and called him asking him to join his band (like in the bolded text above).
whether or not Olsen warned Mick beforehand that Lindsey was loyal to his gf and probably won't do it without her is irrelevant. Mick called Lindsey, and Lindsey had a chance to say one way or another.
once Lindsey confirmed what Olsen said, Mick invited them for dinner with the rest of the band because he wanted to see whether they could also add another woman - and it depended on what Christine thought of her. Mick didn't invite them both upfront, he only invited Lindsey. when it was Lindsey + gf, he had to check with the rest of the band before inviting both. only after that dinner, after Christine said yes, they were both officially invited. before dinner it was only Lindsey.
Has Christine ever backed this up?.

Source?
Because, there’s been two sourced articles about that night with the two guys who were actually part of the conversation. Olsen spent most of NYE convincing them to join. Their accounts, 22 years and at least one lawsuit apart, perfectly aligned. I’ve never read an account where Mick got Lindsey’s number from Olsen and called him directly. That’s fan fiction.
Stevie is responsible for their success because Lindsey got a job offer and she told him to take it? By that logic I’m responsible for Jeff Bezos’ success. I said, “Why don’t you try selling books, man?” And lo, I made him what he is today.
If Lindsey did not have a girlfriend who pouted every time he did a gig without her (oh why am I stuck in Aspen), maybe he would’ve been inclined to go out on the road more and would have garnered even more opportunities, without the albatross around his neck.
That Lindsey, If Stevie had not listened to those albums front to back and back to front, he’d be a bum looking for handouts on the corner today.
lmao i love you and your sense of humor!
heh true, re her making huge scenes every time Lindsey took a gig for longer than a week, she still talks about it when explaining Landslide. imagine if he took 8-week FM gig without her?! Olsen probably REALLY wanted to make sure he doesn't have to deal with Stevie if she stays behind so made clear upfront she has to go if Lindsey goes.
and yeah, obviously Lindsey was already very familiar with FM music if he was talking about not being on Peter Green's level as a guitarist, while she has never heard of them and had to go listen to their music from back to front.
The exact details are pretty muddy at this point (just about everything that ever happened to Fleetwood Mac is pretty muddy at this point).

yup, you'd have to imagine FM offer was better than Everly Brothers. and maybe if he joined alone, they would have had one final breakup at the time, which would be healthier for both of them long run, while most probably neither of them would be as successful as they ended up being.
Mick told the story many times which agreed with the stage / Lindsey's usual version, including apparently in this most recent interview. and he told a different version once.
Stevie told Lindsey's / stage version many times over decades, except recently since she forced Lindsey outta FM, when she started all of the sudden saying that Mick asked her and Lindsey.

while i'm happy for Lindsey that he and Mick seemed to have rekindled their decades long friendship, i really am not crazy about Lindsey once again re-hooking with the name Fleetwood. he's been finally starting to build a separate cred away from anything Fleetwood, as Lindsey Buckingham - Caution / The Killers is a great step in that direction and he should continue in that vein in a little time he has left, if he wants to cement his own legacy apart form the already cemented FM legacy he has.

Again, I was saying that if Lindsey hypothetically joined the band without Stevie, what would Christine’s reaction have been upon hearing the album Lindsey made with his girlfriend who would have been hanging around them all the time in the studio?

to go back to the Lindsey and Stevie first joining, he mentions something that i haven't heard before from him (maybe others have and i just missed it?) - that Buckingham Nicks songs they were coming in the band with were mostly all co-written. we all get it, but they are credited as such on only one song.
I heard that too, "beautiful co-writes"
In "Play On" of 2014, Mick speaks about the credit Lindsey deserves for bringing Stevie's writings to life.

John's contributions to Stevie's songs cannot be underestimated (though sadly frequently are). Rhiannon, Dreams (you know it's Dreams just from that opening bass line before the song fully starts). His playing on Angel ..... it is why no other versions sound as good. I could go on.

The Brits gave her as much as Lindsey in my opinion. She needed all the help she could get with writing and arranging.

Agree. My favorite John contributions are to Sara.
Didn't Christine mainly take what Stevie recorded on demos and replicate that? Like Sara... didn't Stevie create the piano parts for that whole song?

I’ve said it before, but the Buckingham Nicks “Rhiannon” (https://youtu.be/nDHpcnHGYkM) pales in comparison to the Fleetwood Mac version (https://youtu.be/A_kTZXoabnY).
completely agree with everyone saying that BN versions of the same songs were much more raw (and now in a good way!) and unfinished. that includes not just instrumentation and arrangements but also harmonies. Crystal and Rhiannon are clear examples, while the song that stayed unchanged was Landslide.
i know most people here hold BN album in high regard, as do both Lindsey and Stevie, but for me a lot of their songs and harmonies contained unlistenable screeching and holes in instrumentation before their joining to FM.

Another new interview with Mick that might ruffle feathers:
https://www.rockcellarmagazine.com/mick-fleetwood-interview-peter-green-memories-fleetwood-mac/
Rock Cellar: I’ve got to ask, do you have any idea what your 2021, or even ’22, will look like?
Mick Fleetwood: Truthfully, I have no idea. None. And then you could go, “Well, what’s your pipe dream?” My pipe dream is at some point, I think we sort of have to say goodbye. And I have huge deference to the band that we now are, but I have total deference to Lindsey, and I think, “Wouldn’t it be great if some mutant fantastic stadium shows or something actually does that?”
Rock Cellar: A Fleetwood Mac super group, with Mike and Lindsey? Holy ****!
Mick Fleetwood: Well, we’re back in the pipe dream now. But in my own world, I know that I want to play. I will play. That’s who I am.
Rock Cellar: Well, that’s some kind of goal. [Laughter.]
Mick Fleetwood: Well, I’m really hoping that the thing built around Peter’s legacy can go out on the road. I can go on record that that’s my full intention. And from history, never say never is all there is to say about Fleetwood Mac. I’ll be there doing that, being the weasel in the background attempting to do something versus nothing. And the rest is really just how everyone would feel and whether it would even be possible. I don’t know.
One thing’s for sure, all the components are active. Lindsey’s active; Stevie by now would have done one of her lovely tours, though that never happened; Mike is always doing stuff, for sure. And Neil Finn is just beyond one of my dearest, dearest friends. And I’m hugely respectful of who he is and his talent, and how both Mike and he stepped in, because it was either stop or find something really spectacular that honored our funny trip.
Rock Cellar: And an unenviable task, to step into that the way they did.
Mick Fleetwood: Unbelievable.

What is there to be said that hasn't already? Mick wants it, but of course, because he's just a stupid, greedy douchebag.
DOES Lindsey want it, too? Well, things are sort of looking that way. I pray that he doesn't. The legacy will be f*cked(more than it already is). Well, just throwing this out there, but it probably caught his attention when the guarantees were off by one or two zeros from what he’s used to.
Sure, he could be the total artist for a fraction of the price, or he could suck it up and be “the guy” in the band he shaped and is remembered for. Either way, he’s playing for over an hour and a half. Might as well do what’s best for the portfolio, right?

my stance is that Lindsey's name as a guitar legend has resurfaced in all his glory last year thanks to The Killers
Please. Lindsey’s legacy being enhanced by working with The Killers is even less true than Stevie’s was by working with Kenny Loggins or Destiny’s Child.

Over here in the UK, after the first week, and even not then sometimes..it was never announced (on the Radio) that Lindsey Buckingham was playing on Caution.
So listeners may have liked the guitar work at the end of Caution, but never knew who it was....

May have been different in the USA.

What do you think a pipe dream mutant stadium show would be like?
They open with The Chain, Little Lies, and Dreams with Neil and Mike, then Stevie leaves the stage/Mick puts on his head microphone and introduces band member from 75-2018, Lindsey Buckingham: He does Second Hand News, Monday Morning, Big Love, So Afraid, and Go Your Own Way then returns to his dressing room or gets on a bus to go to the next city?
Or does he stay on stage for the whole show?

^ I don't think it would happen either.
I'm wondering if the only place it would make a difference in touring revenue might be the UK because Lindsey and Christine had the same amount of top 10 hits there so having more Tusk, Mirage, or Tango in the set might be able to pump demand. It might increase touring revenue in the US if they said they were doing all of Rumours live and their greatest hits. (Yes, I know they do most of Rumours live - however Songbird and Sprins haven't been done in a while.
If it did, I also don't see Lindsey coming back full-time but more of a special appearance for some songs.

On reflection I wonder if Mick is angling for some sort of Stevie-less band.
He says, by now Stevie would have done one of her tours, but that obviously hasn't happened. I think maybe he realises Stevie's still going to have her 2 years away for her own work and he can see himself sitting, inactive for 2 more years. He's hedging his bets. If Stevie is out of the equation for 2 years he's probably thinking there's mileage in a Lindsey, Mike, Neil line up. Not as much as if Stevie was there, but there'd be a degree of intrigue.
...and its actually an interesting proposition. I might be tempted to part with money to see them.

That’s not what I got from it. If anything, he seems to be opening the door for some type of collaboration with Lindsey, though not necessarily a reunion with Lindsey and Fleetwood Mac. If the new lineup was over, Mick wouldn’t have bothered mentioning Neil and Mike.
Mick Fleetwood: Yeah, and the incarnation which we all know — Stevie (Nicks) and Lindsey (Buckingham) and John (McVie) and Christine (McVie) and myself — absolutely, understandably more than takes precedence, now with the support of Mike Campbell and Neil Finn, but they’re part of something.

The thing that at least used to be true of Lindsey is that he got fired up if the project fired him up musically. He burned up the asphalt playing with Rage Against the Machine — not so much Leo Sayer. Know what I mean? And I just can’t envision him getting all fired up playing with Campbell or the Crowded House guy. I don’t think he listens to the Crowded House dude much if at all, and what would he do with Mike Campbell? Swap guitar riffs onstage? If that’s the extent of the intermixing, I don’t think he’d find it all that gratifying, tossing blues licks back and forth in concert. Just not his style. So what is there for him to really sink his teeth into with such a proposed project? I guess just $$$$. Rather pathetic for a guy who characterized the post-Buckingham Fleetwood Mac (both times) as mass-market corporate rock and a musical non-sequitur.
He’s really a study in failed ideals. I realize he hasn’t embarked on this project yet and it may very well not happen. But if it does, it’ll be really aesthetically pointless.

There’s no way Lindsey would succumb to such a carnival of mismatched egos and intentions. Whether one respects Lindsey’s musical role or not (and only a small subsection of the fan base wouldn’t) there is no question that he brings vision to the table. Historically, he has lead the charge in the musical arc and attack of each tour involving him. He would not share that role with imposters now. No—there’d need to be a fake but very public reconciliation between Stevie and himself where they both ate a bit of crow for him to return. I think he’s game. She isn’t.

Walls?

He was on The Last DJ album too
I don't think Walls would be brought in a FM set. On the 2018 Tour, Freedom wasn't touched, neither was Stop Draggin, Insider, I Will Run To You, or Whole Lotta Trouble.
I think those would've been more appropriate than DDIO, Free Fallin, or IGY

But if it does, it’ll be really aesthetically pointless.
don't get me wrong... I don't think Lindsey would necessarily say yes. In fact, I don't think it'd be his bag at all. I just think it might be something Mick would scheme for.
Mick isn't getting any younger. He knows the score though, Stevie still has projects on the table she'd want to do before she ever came back to FM. I think he might be tired of the waiting.... he's done that too many times. He needs a buck and his working an angle.
For Lindsey, there's not much he could get out of it (except $$$$).
Oh, also it might give him some satisfaction. The final say, as it were. Closure, even.

Stevie could leave FM forever and do extremely well solo.
She gets energy out of her solo shows. I saw her 3 times in the 2018-2019 tour and she just wasn't like how she was on her 24 Karat Gold Tour.
Even when she did Black Magic Woman, she just stood at the microphone and went "ah, ah, ah, ah, ah". Storms in 2018 paled in comparison to Storms on Unleashed.
Also, there weren't any new costumes on the 2018-2019 tour. And people can talk about the cardigan uprising, but SYW Tour had the best and most costumes from her in 20 years!

This is all somewhat predictable and has been since the news broke that Lindsey would not be with Fleetwood Mac "anymore." Now in recent months we have had Lindsey talk about closure and a willingness to play with them again. Mick and Lindsey talking. Lindsey saying he talked about collaborating with Mick. Mick saying he gives ultimate deference to Lindsey. The 5 will play again and the only thing I can be relatively sure of its not going to include the two people they used to replace Lindsey on the last tour. That statement is just Mick being the politician he is.
A Farewell tour. Limited to probably 30 stadium dates in largest of markets in the US, Canada and Europe. 2022.
As for Lindsey's motivation. Some is a softening of his heart, some of it ia ending their "beautiful legacy" the right way and some is a further lining of his already deep wallet and that is a nice legacy to leave for his younger wife and three children.

Walls?A nifty little song. But could you build a set around it?
“Walls.” “The Man Who Loves Women.” “Asshole.” Several nifty little songs, all associated in the public mind with Tom Petty. I don’t see a small stack of tunes that Lindsey and Mike Campbell happen to have worked on together as making for a very coherent Fleetwood Mac set. Seems more like a Heartbreaker set with Lindsey joining for a few at some star-studded club gig in LA — and that ship has sailed.

I don't think there is too much of market for the 73 year old kidney of a very long term drug addict and alcoholic either. I don't think Lindsey would necessarily say yes. In fact, I don't think it'd be his bag at all. I don’t either. There’s no there there.
I just think it might be something Mick would scheme for.Very possibly. Mick is the sort of chap who throws musical pasta on the ceiling to see if it sticks. (Billy Thorpe, anyone?)
For Lindsey, there's not much he could get out of it (except $$$$).My point, too. And for the guy who dismissed the last (current?) incarnation of the band as a . . . whatever, that would be rotten of him to do it.
Oh, also it might give him some satisfaction. The final say, as it were. Closure, even. I don’t think by “closure,” he ever meant a Mick Fleetwood’s All-Star Band kind of thing, with all this pasta dropping from the ceiling. I think he meant the Rumours Five singing Rumours Five songs on a Rumours Five stage. (Personally, I don’t know which I’d hate more, but it’s a close race.)

Steve Hopkins' Fleetwood Mac featuring Dave Walker, Bob Brunning, Dave Mason, and Mick's drum tech on drums. Busking on a corner near you!:p
If it did, I also don't see Lindsey coming back full-time but more of a special appearance for some songs.
A la Bernie on History of the Eagles and Taylor from 50 + Counting to 14 On Fire... Maybe Homie and jmn3 know where I'm coming from here
I could never see Lindsey just showing up for part of a show similar to what Eagles did with Bernie on that tour. Or the kind haphazard approach the Stones took with Mick Taylor. I can’t see Buckingham’s ego allowing him to just be a special guest and not the lead guitarist. Maybe on a one off but even then I don’t see it. And don’t come at me with the two final 1990 shows and him playing Landslide and GYOW. That was over 30 years and one firing ago.

Me too. Life’s too short to deal with that lot’s horsesh*t.
with your revolving-door aesthetic and swap-out approach (as if the group’s exquisite chemistry were nothing but a potluck meal).
That’s how Mick and John view the band.
TITN was the first Fleetwood Mac album I bought and that was in early August, 1987. Think of the first decade in my fandom: Lindsey quits, Billy & Rick join, Christine and Stevie retire from touring with the band, Rick and Stevie quit, Billy quits, Bekka and Mason join, Billy rejoins, Mick disbands Fleetwood Mac to go work with Lindsey, and the Rumours lineup reunites. So, I’ve never been married to the idea that the Rumours lineup was the only lineup, and the players were largely interchangeable on some level.
The chemistry that made them great is what drove them apart.

Except, have we seen a willingness from Stevie? All I’ve seen is Mick and Lindsey mending fences. It’s also easy to assume Christine and Lindsey are on good terms. However, if Stevie isn’t on board, it’s simply not going to happen, and I haven’t seen anything to suggest she’d consider working with Lindsey again.
It’s Fleetwood Mac, so anything is possible, but I think it’s more likely there will be another LBCM album and tour and a tour with the current lineup than another reunion.

Here's my two cents. This is just off of feeling, gut, and history.
1. There's no way he would join with MC and Neil Finn. That would take an even bigger dump of sh*t on FM's legacy. Stevie has sh*t on this band enough; and Lindsey and most of us know she has. Plus, that line up makes zero artistic sense. It doesn't even make sense without Lindsey but that's a whole 'nother story.
God Mick, if you even had an ounce of deference, or respect for the legend and artistic force that Lindsey has been for this band and rock and roll, you would never suggest such a thing. It's insulting. Is nothing sacred for you? You talk of the tradition of Peter Green who was in the band for a scant of a second, like he's the second coming of Christ. And yet you have shat and still sh*t on the man like he wasn't responsible for anything other than to become an ingredient for you to prosper on. It's so shameful.
2. The only way Lindsey would ever join Fleetwood Mac again would be with the Rumours 5. Very much a gigantic long shot, but financial gain and soul healing would be the draw for all of them to do it. It would heal his broken heart if they found a way not to gloss over the toxic past, but really come to a means of forgiveness and admission of ongoing conflicts.
And dare I say, make a f*cking album. It's been since 1987 since you people have paid any homage to why you exist. Creating music!! Take your band back from mgmt and get on with the show.

Let me preface my comments by saying I need to hear what, if anything of substance, Christine says in her upcoming BBC interview.
After Lindsey is done working his upcoming solo album and the Crowded House tour ends, I see the possibility of a Fleetwood Mac offshoot with Lindsey, Mick, Christine, and Neil, maybe a cameo from Mike, maybe one from Rick. Maybe have Mitchell Froom on keyboards and co-producer. I don’t know if John would be interested in recording if it wasn’t Fleetwood Mac, but I think those four at a minimum could make an amazing album together. I’d much rather have THAT over an arena tour.

Now that the tour's over, Mick's speaking positively about Lindsey. Stevie called Lindsey her great musical love on CBS last year.
If the new lineup won't make new music, a tour with Lindsey would be more fresh for me than a tour with Neil and Mike.
I did multiple shows in 2018-2019 and the performances were like copies of the master recordings and they dragged. With Lindsey in 2014-2015, I felt I could rock to things (Little Lies, Say You Love Me, YMLF, IKINW) because he'd be eyeing it up with Mick and John which in turn took stuff up a notch. Even though Gypsy got slower through the years, it just sounded better to me on the cocktail kit and with Lindsey playing/soloing.
Still don't think the Five will play together again. And it stinks.

Very little about Christine's email (as reported by Lindsey) is really surprising. It aligns with her rehearsed comments on the televised group chat where Stevie's eyes were bulging out of her head while she held John McVie's hand.
Maybe the only piece that could have been an embarrassment to the band is Christine saying she believes "deep down" that Stevie wants Lindsey to return to the fold. I read that as wishful thinking on C McVie's part.

I know this has been debated to death, but I was on a Facebook Stevie group where they were discussing the Mick article. I posted that Lindsey and Mick probably put everything behind them and were willing to work together again. If I was Lindsey I wouldn't, but that's just me. I also stated that it would be nice if Stevie would just come forward and tell her side of the story, but I was scolded by several people and told that she didn't owe us anything. After some thought, I believe she does, we are the fans who have paid a lot of money over the years and have kept this band going. We got that **** show on CBS, we got Lindsey's version and even an article with Brett Tuggle about it. Mick has mentioned talking to Lindsey several times lately since Peter Green died and Stevie even still mentions Lindsey in interviews. This has been a very polarizing event in Fleetwood Mac fandom. It was she who started this, she should formally say what happened before anything like an album or tour happens. This of course is all speculation, she may really mean it when she says she will never share a stage with him again, and maybe there will never be another FM tour, but am I wrong in thinking she should have told the press and her/Lindsey/FM fans exactly what happened? I don't even think Lindsey really understands why he was fired.

I’m sure a lot of what they said wasn’t the whole truth because they knew there was going to be a lawsuit. Even now, I think there are pages and pages of non-disclosure agreements for both side regarding the lawsuit. So, unless Mick, Stevie, and Lindsey are all sitting on a couch together and all spill the beans together, we’ll probably never know the full story.

yeah, I'd go back and watch that interview again. She fell into a trap and was digging herself out of it with that comment. It was PR, and her body language gives her away.
The interviewer said, as if it were a fact, that Lindsey was Stevie's great love. And Stevie on autopilot said "Yes" and then realizes what she's said, and was more like, well he was my great MUSICAL love (her emphasis on 'musical' was very intentional) making it clear that in terms of great LOVE love it was other people. I *think* without watching it again she says there were a "couple" great loves. She does not include him in that category, she deftly puts him over in his own category of "great MUSICAL love".
I reallllly expected (and wanted) the interviewer to follow up on this by asking who WERE those actual great loves but she didn't. Total f*** up on interviewer's part.

it'd be really nice if she had actually loved most any of the few men she dated who were actually GOOD guys who would've stuck by her (Paul Fishkin seems to be one of them). You know, the ones she talks about in interviews now as "there were a few who actually really liked me and didn't have hangups about my success".
But drama queens love the drama.

I'd say that $tevie's greatest love was always in the mirror, looking back at her. I truly doubt $he ever loved anyone more than her own success. $he's a narcissist's narcissist.

You’re probably right.
However, can you blame her? She became the big star of a band largely defined by its rhythm section and the host of great guitarists that passed through its ranks.
As people around here have pointed out, Lindsey was the golden boy and she was the afterthought, largely dismissed, and had to fight to prove her worth. She was the one completely dependent on the others. Now she’s forever the first woman inducted more than once in the Hall of Fame.
So, to have gone from being disposable to becoming so successful in and out of the band that she now calls the shots in the band must have skewed her. How could it not?

Congratulations to her and Irving! It's interesting that Stevie wasn't inducted in 2006 or 2007. When she was first eligible.
I think down the line Stevie will come out with a message that states there are many women of color who should have preceded her as inductees: Ms. Dionne, Diana (solo), Selena, Chaka, Tina (solo), Grace Jones, and Patti Labelle.

She hasn't commented on the Lady A battle. Boy has Vanessa Carlton. I don't think Vanessa Carlton does anything but sit on Twitter all day.

she did tell everyone. she wanted to happily dance around in her old age surrounded by only adoring yes people.
i don't doubt Lindsey knows full well what exactly happened and who said what. FM community is very leaky.
95% of it has trickled out. That's for sure.

the skewing started well before she had anywhere near the kind of power in the band she has now. Sure her real power began when she went solo and the rest of the band had to swallow the fact that she could easily walk away from them for good. Then of course once she had huge success with WH which proved BD wasn't just a fluke, the deal was well and truly sealed. Especially when LB's solo albums (or Christine's) didn't even come close to matching hers in sales etc.
But plenty of people in and around the band have talked through the years about how the Rumours-era success really went to her head and it became harder and harder even for the band to get in touch with her through the layers of sycophants and handlers and a$$-kissers surrounding her starting then. She LOVED being a STAR and moved lock, stock, and barrel into her own Norma Desmond land. Fame and stardom skewed her first and most. Drugs pushed the delusions even further. The real business power didn't come til the 80s, and she was already well and truly skewed by then.

Her confidence grew by leaps and bounds with the success of “Dreams” on the charts and the celebrity magazine coverage (wasn’t she on the cover of People in 1977?). I think she grew into a narcissist — I don’t think she was one before she was a celebrity. Maybe that’s true of many big stars, I don’t know. (Remember how introverted she sounded talking to both Jim Ladd and Laura Gross in 1976 during studio time? Nothing at all like the celebrity she became only a year or two later.)
And by the late 1970s, when Tusk was finally out, Stevie was a Grade A narcissist. It was obvious from the way she talked and the fragmented things she said and even the way she posed for photos that she adored the character she created — I think to the point that she could no longer really distinguish between that character and the woman she was deep down. She began to believe her own publicity, as the saying goes. The others may have been amused at first, but I think they grew frustrated with it. They wanted Stevie to come back down to earth once in a while.
The narcissism charge was showing up in concert and album reviews probably before Tusk. Remember Hilburn’s characterization of Nicks in his review of the Fleetwood Mac 1982 show at Irvine Meadows? By the time this appeared in the paper, it already felt like yesterday’s news.
Nicks, who appears to have gained enormous confidence from her recent solo success, sang Monday with an intensity that matched Buckingham’s own drive. She even has shed some (though far from all) of that narcissistic aura that has made her something of a caricature in rock.

my only quibble here is with male rock critics' opinions about her during the 70s and 80s but especially the 70s. Most didn't "get" her and were blatant a**wipes to and about her in their reviews. The misogyny was palpable then and somewhat appalling in retrospect.

I agree. I rooted for her because she was an extraordinary performer! The fact that she could rock so hard more than some men was fascinating to me.
Women in rock and roll? Just not an easy job or career. And I thought the reviews of her work were definitely unfair.
I can't stand what she became over time. But, I'll always root for the fact that she pioneered concert performances with extreme intensity and showmanship that left some men in the dust.

Much like Fleetwood Mac wasn’t inducted until 1998, five years after they were eligible.

IMO Nicks was inducted more for her personae than her body of work as a solo artist . After Bella Donna it is just not all that impressive.

Interesting that Eagles were inducted in the first year of eligibility. But Mac wasn't. Two Azoff affiliates.
Also, 12 years is a long while after your first year of eligibility considering how necessary Stevie, Harry, and Janet said it was to have a woman inducted twice.
Good thing Stevoe showed face at the 05 and 14 Inductions!

Yes, induction had a heavy feature on Fritz, BN, and Fleetwood Mac too rather than her solo songs which had me question why she was chosen over Tina or Diana. White Privilege

By the way, nothing personal, but I’m so glad you didn’t manage Fleetwood Mac all these years, with your revolving-door aesthetic and swap-out approach (as if the group’s exquisite chemistry were nothing but a potluck meal).

Chemistry? What band have you been watching for the last 40 years? You’re talking about something that hasn’t been relevant to them since Azoff came into the picture in late 1980. It’s been more nostalgia and mythology than reality for last few decades. It’s nothing but verisimilitude. Me putting this person in for that person wouldn’t lead to an album more full of random and completely unrelated songs as we got with Tango In The Night, Behind the Mask, Time, or Say You Will.

Man, catching up on this thread has been a trip. First, no one has really disputed that Lindsey was the draw for BN to be hired by FM. His being the initial draw doesn't diminish the obvious star power of SN or her significant contributions to their success. Without her, I don't think the band is a viable stadium act. She knows that, we know that, the band knows that.
So if Stevie isn't in, I don't think you get Mike Campbell or even Neil Finn devoting time to FM touring. MC is connected to Stevie, and he's not going to tour without her. Neil has his own legendary band, and trying a big tour with FM on a lark once is fun, but grinding out a less luxe and less well paid without her is probably not that big a draw. He could play those same venues (or close) with Crowded House.
I would be very surprised to see some Stevie-less version of the band make a serious go of anything. They're all motivated to do the Rumours 5 arena tours because it's huge audiences and huge money. Once you are looking at less money and smaller audiences, I doubt they will be motivated in the same way.
Lindsey could just do his own solo stuff and keep making albums at home, and Chris and John could just enjoy retirement and maybe do some guest spots on Lindsey's solo stuff. Mick is the hard one to predict. He may always be trying to wrangle the others into a Rumours 5 reunion payday, and if Stevie ever says yes, I think it's very possible they will reunite for another farewell tour.

There won't be another huge tour with the Rumours five. It would be at least 2 years before it could happen .Some of them are already too elderly. These people are not immortal. That gravy train has made it's last round.
