There is an honest and genuine debate to be had;

Would Lindsey joining Mick, John and Chris (without Stevie) been more successful than Stevie joining Mick, John and Chris (without Lindsey) in 1975 or vice-versa? Obviously that assumes at least somebody else joins with Stevie (perhaps BW stays but LB doesn't join).
Who had the biggest impact???

The truth is, probably neither band would have sufficiently made enough waves. But of the two, who would have garnered more success?

I genuinely don't know. Depends on the other guitarist I guess.

It’s conjecture, but I imagine FM would have continued to do moderately well to even a little better with just LB and CM fronting the band. But for how long? Two or three years tops?

SN would not fit in with the core trio unless LB was there. She ended up being the reason FM became superstars. Without her, they were merely a very fine rock band. But LB’s presence as the bridge between SN and the former blues players was essential in order for it to happen.

In short, FM could only be the iconic band they became with all five of them on board. After LB left in 87, they declined. After SN and CM stopped touring and SN left in 1990, they declined further. After CM outright left in 1998, they were able to continue but without as huge a fanfare as before. After LB was fired in 2018, they repeated themselves as a covers band.

Probably with Stevie the band could get a bigger commercial success than the previous albums, but only if they get also a very good producer; I deduce it from the weak success of Behind the Mask, though it's just a clue, not an evidence.

With just Lindsey, the critics would have said they had very good albums, probably not great commercial successes.

Anyway, in both cases there wouldn't have been the albums we got. There wouldn't have been a Rumours phenomenom.

Stevie was such a major draw as part of the live band. She was the undoubted star almost overnight and the main reason the line-up gained traction. She also brought Rhiannon to the table. Would her songs have worked on record without Lindsey bringing them to fruition?
However, Lindsey was such a phenomenal musician. His musicianship was a significant step ahead of what Bob Welch could give them.

Its obviously the combination of the two that gave people the interest. However, I'm going to stick my neck out and say if only one of them had joined it would have been a band featuring Lindsey that would have found more success. He gave them leadership and I think his nous would have found a way to some sort of success irrespective of whether Stevie was part of it or not. Stevie on the other hand was much more naive regarding the business and music in general. Without a musical leader they'd have remained lost.

Didn't Iovine say he knew Stevie needed someone (that someone was Lindsey) to turn her work into songs to include on albums?

She also never took the initiative since 1981 to become a guitar player. Even Rod Stewart, a true frontperson, plays guitar onstage for Dirty Old Town.

The problem with your scenario is Lindsey actually produced Fleetwood Mac. He made them stars. He took crappy demos like Gypsy, Dreams, Sara and turned them into hits. It’s not debatable who is the bigger talent. Stevie got to work with great producers because Lindsey made her star.

Her stardom got into the bands way. She made the band toxic. He would of never left in 1987 if it wasn’t for her.

By December 31, 1974, Keith Olsen was under contract to make the new Fleetwood Mac album.

Hypothetically, Mick tells Keith to get Lindsey and Stevie, but Lindsey refuses....

“Lindsey doesn’t want in? Okay, well there are these cats named Warren and Waddy you could consider...”

A couple weeks later: “Hey, you’re Christine, right? I’m Stevie. Wanna get some margaritas?“

I dont think adding just Stevie in the mix in 1974 would have changed the band so much. Lindsey changed it with guitar and new production sound. The band probably would have had some success with Lindsey.
But the couple needed each other and the band also needed them and the couple needed the band.
Adding both was like a chemical equation. Each is not as powerful without the other. So just adding one to Fleetwood Mac would not change very much. However Lindsey is a musician and I think they would have had some success with him. The star power of both completely changed the band almost like a new band.
I heard Stevie say once that "Lindsey and her did not get people falling out of their chairs during the Buck/Nicks era until they joined Fleetwood Mac." She sounded a bit resentful because she explained how hard they worked.
The 5 together was like the perfect recipe. You cant take one away during the foundation years and expect the same success.

This is a tricky one, good question.
Well I think Lindsey added the most artistically, but Stevie made the most money for them.
Without Lindsey they would be just an average middle of the road rock band....long finished by now.
Without Stevie they wouldn’t be multi millionaires..
So it’s Art over Cash..
with both of them added, you get the full package..

Stevie attracted people to the band. She attracted me. But without Lindsey, the songs that pull everyone in wouldn’t have existed in the form that we know them. Without Stevie, we would still have OMH and SYLM and GYOW. But without Lindsey we aren’t going to get the same kind of Stevie hits. Furthermore, without the work that Lindsey did on her songs which made her prominent, I don’t think you’re going to get the other producers interested enough to work with her.

Waddy said he thought that Lindsey was wasting his time working on her flower and the vine stuff. He didn’t see the diamond in the rough. Lindsey saw it, polished up the diamond and then everyone wanted to work with her.

Stevie had a very unique voice and people would be attracted to that. But the initial songs that helped her create her aura needed Lindsey. So, I don’t see Fleetwood Mac achieving as much success without Lindsey and just Stevie.

On second thoughts and after reading some info, Bella Donna was N.8 in Billboard 1982 year end chart (got N.1 in a weekly chart) and sold 10 million copies. Tusk sold 4 million copies worldwide. I read Mirage sold 5 million copies.

So, definitely without Lindsey there would not have been the Rumours phenomenon and I've always said that the 5 members lineup was the definitive Fleetwood Mac to me. But about this debate, I think, without Lindsey who knows how would Christine and Stevie songs have sounded. Wth a good producer (not Greg Ladanyi), and probably a third songwriter (the guitarist) the band could have achieved a decent success.

“Successful” means “make more money”? It’s hard to say what would have happened in 1975, when Stevie’s only mystique was being a cute babe who sang funny. She only later developed that aura of being a great songwriter and rock Romanticist, as we all know. But I guess Stevie needed to be in the band for it to make the most money. She developed the quality that turns on rock audiences — that makes them want to watch her. She developed that appeal a lot quicker than Lindsey did, and she had more of it. The mass audience didn’t know that he crafted the arrangements; for all they knew, Stevie did that, or they didn’t think about who at all. By the time Lindsey got a widespread response of any kind from Mac fans, it was almost entirely a specialized, cerebral response: his inventive guitar work, for example, wasn’t going to blow Alvin Lee away, but it was going to add texture and mood to a song so that you could listen to that song a thousand times and a year later you still wouldn’t be sick of it (hugely important to Fleetwood Mac’s commercial success). That’s just not the kind of thing that sells lots of albums or sells out arenas by itself. It needs to complement something. Naturally, by 1977 (not 1975) Stevie had the crossover appeal.

Stevie was NOT seen in the early days of FM the way she is seen now. She was openly mocked by most of the men in radio... you used to be able to find links on youtube to vintage recordings of radio DJs mocking how she sang, the infamous goat comparisons, etc. She was NOT taken seriously at all. And she wasn't the performer the world came to know and love back then either.. Ray Lindsey and some others tell some great stories about those days in a recorded interview that's somewhere on youtube about how long it took her to find her footing and that her singing on that first short Mac tour was NOT good. So, without LB to polish up her songs for radio, and with her stage persona not yet solidified (the Rhiannon outfit not yet created, no top hat, etc) I would doubt that she would have set the world on fire in the way that she did. I think they'd be more successful with just LB and his contributions to the recorded music, which would get them more airplay (which was crucial back then). Stevie, in her still developing state in 1975 would not have gained them much at all.

I wouldn’t argue with much of this, though there are several recordings of her from that first tour where she sounds great. From what I gather, she was inconsistent due to fatigue and relentless touring. She couldn’t persist like the rest of them—that is until “Over My Head” and “Rhiannon” changed things. Then, buoyed by self confidence, she became what she became.

Indeed. And I also think some of what Ray was referring to was also that short tour the band did to get some live experience together just before or while recording the white FM album. I recall Mick saying somewhere that he felt it was important for them to have done shows together and various management/label types tried to discourage them. But he said in the end he was glad they did because it helped them solidify playing together even more and when the album was finally finished and they went on that first proper tour they had the experience of those previous shows to draw on.

This was the period where Stevie used to constantly compare touring to "being in the Army" with inane comments like "You have to be where you're supposed to be and you have to be on time" (welcome to the real world). It really showed what a spoiled princess she was up til then. How long was any BN tour??

We've heard Chris talk about lugging her own bags and even crew have talked about her setting up bits of her own gear onstage.... I would bet my mortgage Stevie NEVER so much as plugged in a microphone let alone ever helped carry anything heavy. There are pics of her carrying her big gypsy handbags with her books and things but that's it.

Yeah, Chris was a real road warrior, despite writing songs like “Homeward Bound” as early as 72! I love that Polaroid Richard Daschut shared with The ledge where she’s repairing her Höner with pliers or a wrench. She was no pampered darling. Bob Welch once remarked, Christine lived on Dunkin‘ Donuts in the early 70s. I could see her drinking wine and gorging on junk food, taking it all in stride as a hard but good living...To me, that’s a far more heroic story than Stevie’s triumphant rise to superstardom.

But about this debate, I think, without Lindsey who knows how would Christine and Stevie songs have sounded.
Thing is, Christine’s songs didn’t sound radically different from her 1971-74 songs, harmonies and all, and she went on to have the majority of Top 40 singles.

I think just having a complete mainstream pop package would have helped them become more successful. As much as I love the Bob Welch era, there was a ceiling to their potential success. He had two or three bubblegum songs, but the rest were pretty heavy subject matter for the Hit Parade. Plus, he was kind of weird looking and had a weakish voice. They made great records, but they were never going to be blockbuster hits. Think about it, Bob Welch’s Carlos Castaneda inspired mystic jazz rock and classic Christine McVie songs produced by Deep Purple’s producer. If that doesn’t scream identity crisis, I don’t know what does. It wasn’t until they moved to LA and started playing up having a woman in the band (Jefferson Starship tour) that they had a Top 40 album.

I don’t know how well Fleetwood Mac would have done without the drama. Fleetwood Mac was selling only moderately better than its predecessors until it came out that the McVies split and that Stevie and Lindsey had mostly split. Then it became a huge hit. Obviously, Rumours. Fast forward to TITN, and its sales started skyrocketing after Lindsey quit.

I really think that the Tango sales began to pick up mostly due to the sequence of the singles released Big Love was kind of another oddity ..I was surprised when it hit top five here and it did not get much airplay after it's chart run. Seven Wonders was a bigger hit at rock radio than the pop charts . It was Christine's two international smashes , accessible pop hits that kept the album buoyant in the charts for so long.If star members jumping ship made albums sell then Time would have been a multi-platinum smash.

“Little Lies” was released 25 days after Lindsey’s departure and that was arguably the biggest story in the rock world at the time. Go figure, it was the biggest single off the album. Just a coincidence, right?

And, it’s not that a star members jumped ship, per se. It was another moment of high drama from the band that gave us Rumours. It was an abrupt change, and the first for Fleetwood Mac in 12 years. There was no public drama with Time.

I like Mystery to Me, but I can't imagine another three or four albums like it. They would have to be Christine-heavy, and even then, you're looking at a lot of lukewarm radio-friendly fare between the two of them.

I mean zero offense to Chris either. I love her, but even she has admitted to being a formulaic songwriter, and did not really expand her repertoire beyond the basic 1-2-3 love/lost love song. Bob, like Danny Kirwan, was not the most lighthearted guy, at least not lyrically. Bare Trees and MtM are good albums but are not ones that I would listen to in their entirety. Not without feeling a little broody afterward.

She didn’t, but that’s why the Rumours lineup worked. Lindsey and Stevie were also mainstream pop writers, but in completely different ways from Christine and each other, which made for a compelling package that none were ever able to duplicate outside of the band. The Fleetwood Mac album was an unintentional masterpiece that even Mick, at the time, didn’t think worked as a cohesive project, but it’s maybe the most cohesive album they made.

you'd have to ask Sheryl. She did mention something about it being a certain "energy" a person gives off. I think that means walking into a room like you own it, demanding that your hotel suite be repainted pink with a white grand piano added in.... until finally you just demand the presidential suite. Oh and bringing your entourage with you when invited to a private listening of a younger artist's new album, then forcing him to stay up all night while you and said entourage listen to said album over and over again, offering unrequested suggestions about how each song could be better, failing to notice young singer doesn't stay up until 7 am like you do because, well, you're a legend used to the world conforming to your schedule.

The White album is a thing of beauty. (Even with Sugar Daddy being on there!) Everyone knows the singles, but if you listen to the whole thing from start to finish, it's an undeniably strong album. It has a completely different vibe from Rumours. Warm Ways is one of its weak spots, but it's so short and mellow that it doesn't drag everything around it down, and it has the benefit of being sandwiched between Monday Morning and Blue Letter.

I'll never understand the hate that Sugar Daddy gets... it's the Think About Me of the White album!

Now don't get me started:lol: , but Warm Ways is right there with Oh Daddy. Snoozeville! Too sleepy for me. I need me some damned BEAT. The exact same reason I hate Storms and Beautiful Child. Zzzzzzz....
I love this early version of Sugar Daddy. It should have been the album cut. Her vocal is better and more raw. The organ is just blowing up. No Stevie on this one so you should like it better ;)
Now just imagine this song being track #2 during the Buck/Vie tour or instead of You Make Loving Fun, this was the second song during On With The Show. I would have fallen out of my chair.

If you listen closely. You can hear a little keyboard churning Say You Love Me in the beginning. Chris was loaded for bear for this album and all Fleetwood Mac albums I would say.

Oh wow, I heard the difference right away! It does bring SYLM to mind. I like the way this one closes and how prominent her vocals are throughout. Seems like they got a little compressed in the final mix, in comparison. Mixed down? I don't know the technical term for it.

Thank goodness Stevie saved Chris's organ from these early years. Stevie refused to let Chris abandon it, sell it or give it away when Chris quit the business. Stevie knew what a piece of history it was and dug it out over 17 years later to give back to Christine.

I can only imagine how hot the organ was after a performance like this. I love Lindsey's guitar solo on the song but I much prefer hearing the organ on this one.

Sugar Daddy is the BEST song on the album!:mad::mad:

It is certainly one of her best songs. Love everything about it. That organ, her voice, the killer bass. People who hate the song do not possess a wry sense of humor and know next-to-nothing about the blues. I’ve read comments where people are “offended” by the clearly-satirical lyrics. They are unable to savor irony.

But I am equally enthralled with the morose sincerity of “Oh Daddy.” In its own way, that song is as iconic as, say, “Rhiannon,” an archetypal plea from earth-mother/woman-child...

Listening to it again today, I've decided it's a fun addition to the album. My former impression of it was that it wasn't ~*serious enough*~ and therefore worthy of derision or dismissal. According to last.fm, the last time I listened to it was in 2014 - once. The two times before that were in 2008, so I'd say it was high time that I listen to it again with fresh ears.

That's cool. Its fun to appreciate older songs you pass by and not like. Years later you learn to appreciate them. When I bought the album Tusk, I hated Storms. My album had scratches on the song which took away the intimacy of the song. Years later I discovered the passion of the song and paid attention to the lyrics and its a great song. One of the best of Tusk.
Only Over You is another song. I hated the song when I first got Mirage. Today, OMG, its one of the best songs on Mirage.

A personal aside.

I'm one of those few who prefer THE WILD HEART to BELLA DONNA. But I think it may have to do with how I came to know those albums. I began my FM/Stevie Nicks kick in 1982, with the advent of "Hold Me" and "Gypsy." (I knew and was impressed with the band before this but wasn't old enough to become obsessed until '82.) After that, SN released THE WILD HEART. I was in awe of "Stand Back," "Nightbird," and "Sable on Blonde"--and much of the rest of the record impressed me. I didn't hear BELLA DONNA until later, and by the time I had, Christine and her music began to take over. Funny how timing is everything. I mean, I recognize that what's great on BELLA DONNA is probably better than anything on THE WILD HEART, but it never moved me in the same way, so my relationship to those songs is different. Save "How Still My Love," none of it calls to me or follows me down 'til the sound of it haunts me. Or something like it.

If I cant get you to appreciate and love Oh Daddy then it would be impossible for Storms. Oh Daddy is a musical track masterpiece. Storms is a lyrical poem. Each are different. In fact Storms is a perfect example track of Tusk as an album. Its not catchy pop songs. The song starts out sounding like a demo as if the guitar is already playing and someone just hits the record button. Over produced as some say or under produced as some say? The guitar is very solemn as to not take away from the solemn singing. The first 10 years I heard the song I never had any interest in it and thought of it as a wasted track. Stevie's Behind the Music segment from 1999 featured the song and it made me finally go back and appreciate it. Its clearly about Mick, a secret and deep love that she finally sets free. Its very deep and very personal. The emotion comes from the lyrics. I have always loved one of the final lines "I have never ever been a blue calm sea, I have always been a storm." That my friend is poetry at its best. Yes the song is boring to the casual listener. The Mac actually took it out of their live set because the audience was obviously not into it. It comes from a very emotional place. As I said, its very solemn and its all lyrics and mood. If you are looking for a catchy chorus, this is not it. But that's pretty much every song on Tusk. IMHO its made to sound like a demo to keep its passion. What she has to say should be sung like this.

Yep. Where some hearing boring, I hear weariness. I've always gotten a last call, 3 AM feeling from it, the same as you'd get from staying up all night journaling or talking things out with the other person, only to reach an impasse. It could very well have been written that way, knowing Stevie. I get the same feeling from Save Me a Place.

This is why I felt it shouldn't have been dragged out for the Unleashed tour. It needs to be sung with a certain fragility that her voice just didn't have anymore.

The songs that you mentioned on The Wild Heart are great. I'd also add If Anyone Falls one of her very best solo singles .I can also understand having a connection with the album that got you into the music first. Bella Donna IMO does not have any weak songs or duds on it. It remains a pristine album and the last great California rock album of the classic era. The Wild Heart has 2 or 3 as do all of her subsequent solo albums (some of them many more) .I guess 10 years of not putting out one bad song is a pretty good track record.

All of that.... REQUIRES someone wanting to buy into fandom of $tevie Nicks. For those who might dismiss her as somewhat of a dolt, and being the WORST thing that ever happened to FM, that's a tough pill to swallow.

While I'm not a casual listener, I will agree that the song is boring. "Boring" is actually being kind. ;)

I love Storms, and I especially love the band's arrangement of it versus her original version. There's a sh*t ton of stuff going on if you listen closely-- Christine's multiple keyboard lines all throughout are what really fill it out. And though a bit lengthy the lyrics are among her best.

My Little Demon was better than Temporary One or Silver Girl. I was overjoyed that Clinton resurrected them from the dead, but if that was the best the three could do . . . It was like Stephen King’s Pet Sementary where your beloved dead dog comes back to life, but somehow he really is not the same Fido.

"Storms" is genuinely moving. It's eerie, too. All that reverb. Even though it seems so spacious and spare you're right: there is a lot going on. What interests me about it is that it feels musically close to some of the tunes on FUTURE GAMES. "Storms" could sit right next to "Woman of a Thousand Years" or "Show Me a Smile," or even "Future Games" and it wouldn't seem out of place.

I didn't start to appreciate the song until I actually listened to all the words in the lyrics and the story being told. Certainly the music was not able to sustain my interest for the years I passed over the song. Its sort of like a passionate love letter being written before she seals the envelope for the eternal good-bye. The frail mood of the song is captured by the music and the way that it is sung which is exactly why I skipped it for over 10 years.

I like Honey Hi and TAM. That’s about it for her on that album.

Since Lindsey always liked to pull out a Tusk song for the tour, I always hoped that Honey Hi would see the stage like Storms and Beautiful Child did.

"Storms" is genuinely moving. It's eerie, too. All that reverb. Even though it seems so spacious and spare you're right: there is a lot going on. What interests me about it is that it feels musically close to some of the tunes on FUTURE GAMES. "Storms" could sit right next to "Woman of a Thousand Years" or "Show Me a Smile," or even "Future Games" and it wouldn't seem out of place.

interestingly Lindsey talked about how he thought anyone else producing that song would have gone down a country route in arranging it; he made it sound like that was the way Stevie herself thought about it. But he thought the arrangement needed to be more reflective of the lyrics and really support the words. Dam him.

I fully support a government study to examine why someone would prefer Mystified over Oh Daddy (especially when someone says "I need a beat.") Unless they mean a beet from a salad bowl.

Only Over You - The beautiful atmosphere, the pleading and pain in Christine's voice, the marching drums, the beautiful guitar squawks, the ahhhhhhh's by BuckVie, the wonderful piano and guitar on the outro. The fact that it ended Side 1.

Mystified - The the sprinkle of bass and drums, the lush harmonies, the simpleness of the progression, the 'Only Over You' esque guitar solo, the BuckVie UUUUUUUUUUUUU's. and "Fiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeed". Mick's drums at the end. The fact that it ended Side 1.

Oh Daddy - The beautiful acoustic guitar intro, the sublime lead vocal, the pounding of (I think it's a D) on piano. The stylings of Christine's electric piano mixed with meddling organ and guitar. John's driving bass. The line, "And I can't walk away from you, baby if I tried." The shimmering in the quiet break, then the 'yessssss its go to be meeeeee" with all three voices on "yes". Then it rolls into Gold Dust Woman.

Stevie and Christine were at the top of their game vocally during the Dance. But, Temporary One is a boring basic title. And the lyrics ruin the music.

Where Sweet Girl has wonderful lyrics and a really nice melody that compliments them. Must I explain everything to you and Homie! :wavey:

It is boring. I did use the lyrics when I created the program for my father’s funeral, however. The part about the bridge separating us being a temporary one.

I don't hate it but it's like many meh Tango songs. Oh Daddy is one of the best musical tracks the band has ever made. Period! Its beyond brilliant and showcases all of the musicians at their best especially the Chris/Lindsey dynamic how they play around each other. But let’s be realistic. If you are musically inclined and play an instrument, maybe the music is all that matters to you. But for the rest of us, lyrics have a great influence. They can change the way you feel about a song. And unless you’re interpreting the lyrics, phrasing and intonation in the vocals mean nothing. So if you don’t like the lyrics in Oh Daddy or Sugar Daddy, that’s going to color your interpretation of the songs.

All you guys are pissin me off. I love “Mystified” because it feels so delicate but still strong deep inside. Lindsey and Christine made world music the Tango foundation. A lot of these songs use what they call the pentatonic scale, “Mystified” included. That fact in and of itself means nothing except an obscure curiosity, but these five-tone scales in use all over the album tie everything together aurally and give everything an emotional something or other by transporting us to exotic locales and faraway romantic lands, where lovers cavort and intercourse, their bodies entwining liked the famed coiled cobras of Sumatra. On some tracks, you hear Middle Eastern exoticism (“Caroline,” “Frozen”), and on some others, the Far East (“Seven Wonders,” “Tango in the Night,” “Little Lies,” “Mystified”). It’s a giant canvas of world sound, a music landscape of exotic color, and a whole lot of drum machinery and Yamaha DX-7. “Mystified” fan here, so screw y’all.

I see the boring in Brown Eyes and Warm Ways, but I think Mystified is a fine song. The layered vocals, the haunting whispers, discretely capturing attention, from behind dark corners.

I will say that the title always makes me think of Hypnotized. If we try, I bet we could create our own Mandela effect and get all the world to think that Fleetwood Mac has a song called Mesmerized.

As emotional as this post is, it's lucid and I connect to your point of view in a childish and innocent way. Even Family Man gave me a reach to some Latin guitar. The feel of You And I both I and II have a world and mystical sort of feel. I was so young when I stared into the album cover and put this record on. Mystified was just a brilliant segue into Side 2. It felt like a wonderful interlude.

To return briefly to the original thread question regarding which of the SN-LB duo would have brought them greater success if we could only select one—well, I’d like to reinvent the fantasy.

What would FM have gone on to sound like if they hired an entirely different axe man who could play, write, and sing? What kind of musician could have complemented the core trio and made music that hung together with Christine’s? It would have been a tall order—because they couldn’t afford another Bob Welch (good as he was). They’d need an energetic singer with some range. But they’d also need that person to play kick-ass guitar. Was such a person available, or were they always going to need two people to fill that bill?

Among the celebrities I’ve met and talked with:

Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Steven Spielberg, George Clooney, Bradley Cooper, Colin Firth, Michael B Jordan, Peter Bogdanovich, Lynn Redgrave (yes, I imagine Vanessa would have given Stevie a run for her money), Warren Beatty and Annette Bening (waited my whole life to meet them!!), Kerry Washington, Meryl Streep, James Toback, Lesley Manville, Whit Stillman, Rachel Weisz (so... I have to say about her we talked for a really long time — she is 2x more beautiful in person and the nicest celebrity I ever met who wasn’t already a friend of a friend), Jessica Chastain, Liev Schreiber, Green Gartside (so cool!!!!), Iris DeMent, David Gedge (when he was sexy sexy!), stupid Michelle Williams, Christine Lahti, and I’m forgetting a bunch more and it’s late.

Deacon and Vince both did a great job. They pretty much shared doing Glenn's songs. At the end of the first song Deacon sang, they put up a pic of Glenn, and pretty much everybody was in tears.

Well, IDK....Vince Gill is a BAD ASS. If we're talking pure talent, he's a much better singer and guitar player than Glenn. No contest.

I saw their two consecutive Nashville shows last tour. Unfortunately, the only times I've seen them. After they reunited in 1994, tickets were always so damned expensive that I put it off as, "I'll get around to it some day". Some day died, when Glenn did.

Agreed. Same. IF it weren't for it being Vince Gill(of whom I was already a fairly big fan) and Glenn's son, it probably wouldn't have worked for me.

But they had to replace him, IF they were going to carry on. He sang close to half of their catalog(over their entire career). I can't imagine a show with only Don, Joe, and Timothy songs. It wouldn't hold water.

Again, I agree. Led Zep did the right thing. But that's back when albums sold millions, and that's how artists made their money. Touring is the gravy boat now. And no one will ever convince me otherwise, that the reason they don't reunite now- is because Robert just can't hit the notes now, and it would be embarrassing to try. And I applaud them for that.

Exactly why I made a point to check out The Who, McCartney, the Stones, ELO w/ Dhani Harrison, and Brian Wilson/Al Jardine w/ The Zombies in 2019. And, I’m glad I went to the GbV 100 song NYE show in Los Angeles last year. Legendary show and it gave me an excuse to go to the Rose Bowl. Glenn just couldn't hit the notes?

Henley says his favorite song is "the last one". IDK how he still hits the notes he does at 73. I know he has a hard time, but he gets there most of the time(Do you have Farewell 1, or "History of"? I watch them almost weekly).

Timothy IS an angel. Such a sweet man. He had a cast on his foot when I saw them. He didn't explain it the first night, but on the second, he said that he fell in the shower, and "we have to be careful at our age".

Steuart IS a great guitarist, HOWEVER, Felder is better. Maybe not technically better(by a slim margin), but he has the phrasing. When you listen to both, you can tell who was on the recordings. Steuart overbends his notes, to where they're sharp. Felder didn't do that. Felder is my favorite guitar player from the Eagles. FAR FAR FAR more interesting than Joe Walsh. Joe Walsh plays Chuck Berry licks, OVER AND OVER. Felder invents phenomenal solos!

All along, I've felt that Eagles success without Frey was a primary factor in everyone going along with firing Lindsey. Azoff certainly used the comparison to convince Stevie and Mick that they could go out without him. However, the comparison is ridiculous since Glen wasn't fired and the situation couldn't be more different. And quite honestly, cheesy as it may seem, Deacon being there in place of his late father made it work. Vince carries more of Glen's load (as he should, the man is an amazing singer and guitar player), but Deacon's presence makes it all seem okay.

I've seen them pre- and post-Glen's death. During the Long Road Out of Eden and History of the Eagles tours, Glen's voice was certainly not at its peak nor would I expect it to be at his age at the time. I wouldn't say it was hard to listen to, but he certainly struggled at points. I don't think he had been able to hit the "woooohoo" in Heartache Tonight since HFO and he could never do justice to Randy's vocal on Take it to the Limit. Don's voice has aged wonderfully, and Timothy still sounds good. But they too have dropped keys and their ranges are limited.

And I totally agree about Felder. Smith is technically very good but a bit rote live in my opinion. Especially the One of These Nights solo or Hotel California, they're Felder's solos...something lacks in the performances since his departure. The notes are hit but it lacks substance, depth, or something? Like Campbell or Vito playing the GYOW solo. They're not bad but they aren't playing like Lindsey would and something is just off. I would love to see Felder back but it isn't happening. Lindsey will be back standing in the shadows as Stevie tells a new 18 minute long story introducing Dreams and talking about the TikTok video long before Felder shares an Eagles stage with Henley again.

What keys have they dropped, other than Don's solo songs? I know Heart Of The Matter has been lowered, and I believe Boys Of Summer, too.

Take It To The Limit doesn't count, since it was Randy's song. The original is in B, and I think Glenn did it in G.

Are you sure Henley has a major problem with Felder? I always thought it was mostly Glenn. When Henley first began his solo career after their breakup, he asked Felder to be in his band! But if memory serves, he was only offering Felder 5K/week, and Felder felt that that was nowhere near enough money.

First of all, you can no longer even call them twirls. They haven't been twirls in almost 20 years. And to be fair to Stevie, she's into her 70's and I refuse to make fun of an old woman who can't twirl around on stage like she did in years past. That's just life. What I WILL make fun of, is her insistence on continuing to do this. It's pure insanity. Not being able to do it anymore isn't sad, continuing to think you can and should do it, that is sad.

Yuck, don't make me show my work. Is this math class? LOL...so, of course the first two that came to mind when I typed that were Boys of Summer and Take it to the Limit. I'm no musical expert and wouldn't even know that a song was in B and now G, so I just go off what I'm hearing. And I'm also going off memory from a few years ago bu I was pretty certain that one or both of Timothy's songs were lowered...either I Can't Tell You Why or the one from Hell Freezes Over. Also, Seven Bridges Road comes to mind.

And while I thought most of the Felder stuff was with Glen, I think after suing them and writing that book, Don Henley would not have him back. I think his book pissed Henley off more than anything else. He certainly didn't seem to have any warm feelings in the documentary. BUT, what I thought was awesome of both Don and Glen, they included Felder in that documentary and also don't go out of their way to minimize their own actions or try to look like heroes.

I'm fairly certain Timothy's songs haven't been lowered. I am a musician, and I have a guitar leaning against the couch at all times. AND I'm a freak who remembers the keys of songs. So songs like Heart Of The Matter, the second it begins, I'm like "this doesn't sound like 'D'"(grabs guitar - "nope, they're doing it in C now").

Do you have any of the bootleg live Eagle's DVDs? There are a ton of them out there. Far far more than FM. My favorite is a pro shot one in Christchurch NZ. It was an outdoor show, and it absolutely rained cats and dogs for the entire thing. Anyway, Henley is having a REALLY hard time getting through Boys Of Summer, and Timothy jumps in and is singing the end of the song with him(singing Don's part - so at least someone is hitting the notes!).

Yeah, I think you're right, now. Henley is a POMPOUS, bitter f*ck. Arguably one of the greatest vocalists of his generation. Yeah, when he keeps saying, "Mr. Felder", you can sense the animosity. Jagger is in a league of his own. His commitment to staying in shape as he aged over the last 30-40 years is awe inspiring. Watching him run from side to side 5 years ago at Heinz Field you just sit in awe that this man is the age that he is and able to do what he does. The rain in that Christchurch show is insane. I've seen bits and pieces over the years, can't recall Boys of Summer specifically. It's been on Youtube off and on but like most Eagles things, doesn't last very long.

And yes, his insistence on referring to Felder as "Mr. Felder" was a dead giveaway. It was said in a seething way. I don't think they get together for barbecues. LOL

That whole Bob Welch / RRHOF thing is really irksome. In hindsight, no surprise that Chris would take the stance she did in 2018 given how she acted 20 years prior.

I was on an Eagles board for a while, maybe 10(just googled - 2006) years ago(it was around the time Felder's book came out, because I won a copy in a giveaway they were doing), and a member sent me about a dozen different Eagles shows on DVD.
The fact that Christchurch was a pro shoot makes you wonder if it was supposed to be released, but the weather made it not a good option? The audience looks miserable, with their rain ponchos pulled down tight. And you can see the Eagle's breath when they're singing, so it had to be a miserable night for all.

My guess is Christine probably doesn't give Bob Welch a passing thought much at all. Definitely a disgrace - there wouldn't be a Stevie and Lindsey era of Fleetwood Mac if there wasn't a Bob era. And that time has some of Christine's best songs in her entire catalog IMO. Dumb.

I always wondered what the point of that Christchurch show being filmed was - would they have released a live show such a short time after releasing the HFO video? Like The Dance, HFO was polished and while good, a full length HFO era concert, warts/rain and all, would be a great release.

I would love to sit down with Christine and talk about the early days with Bob. I don't think they got along very much. I say that only because of the things Bob said. He was the first American in the band and he said they and especially Christine expected to be treated like royalty. Bob also said Christine did not like his speaking parts during live shows and would give him the evil eye.
On the flip side, the show with Bob in 1981 they were all smiling friends. It was Lindsey who produced Sentimental Lady to make it a big solo hit for Bob which again Christine sung back up. Now that he has passed, I am sure she would have nothing but good things to say about him. But the treatment he got for the RRHOF was horrendous and probably over not that much money. And the worst part of it was Mick's second book where he raved about Bob over and over, never a bad word. It was pure propaganda compared to the hard truth how he was treated. I may be in the minority but I was insulted the band performed Hypnotized on stage just as much as Second Hand News during this last tour. These people have NO SHAME.

It was to fill in for a Lindsey song. The Lindsey live staples Big Love, NGBA, So Afraid, Tusk, and IKINW had to go so they threw in classic rock radio songs liek Hypnotized, BMW, Oh Well, Man of the World and Tell Me was on the 50 Years Anthology which I think was being sold at the concerts???

My guess is Christine probably doesn't give Bob Welch a passing thought much at all. Definitely a disgrace - there wouldn't be a Stevie and Lindsey era of Fleetwood Mac if there wasn't a Bob era. And that time has some of Christine's best songs in her entire catalog IMO. Dumb.

I always wondered what the point of that Christchurch show being filmed was - would they have released a live show such a short time after releasing the HFO video? Like The Dance, HFO was polished and while good, a full length HFO era concert, warts/rain and all, would be a great release.

I'm sure she doesn't give him a second thought. Turns out she's not the saint I'd spent my entire life hoping that she was.

Christchurch pro shoot is weird, in that I would ASSume production there would cost double what it does here(but what the hell do I know about NZ - only that I've had FOUR separate friends go there on vacation, come back and sell everything they own, and move there. FOUR). So yeah, you'd assume a pro shoot here would be the way to go...unless they thought it was special to do it in a foreign land?

He was the Judy Wong of the Eagles.

I guess that must mean that he will die without health insurance toothless and alone in a rundown LA apartment while the band the he helped make famous and filthy rich doesn't lift a finger to help him:shrug:

Apparently these multi millionaire rock stars we worship are too self absorbed to care about anyone else.

Lindsey produced the song at Mick's request. Lindsey told me directly that he did it as a favor for Mick. So as big a douche as Mick can be, he really is the one that stays in touch with people and puts the most value on relationships (not 100%, but then who is)

That's because he needs ARTISTS with whom he can hitch his broken down trailer to their bumper.

Mick is always thinking of the bottom line, and his 3rd(4th?) upcoming bankruptcy. He needs to nurture those relationships for his own wallet.

That was one of my points from my earlier post. They were all chummy after Bob left. But with all things with Mick, when it comes to money he will throw you overboard or cut ties if it profits him.
Sadly, this will be the reason he will welcome Lindsey back for the "Farewell tour." He knows the last tour with the final 5 will be more profitable so that is why I think it will happen.
One of the best stories Bob told on his old website was that he ran into Lindsey at a club or bar shortly after Lindsey joined and Lindsey confronted Bob "How did you stand these people." Bob said something like "I know your pain."
We can only speculate but Bob became a threat to Mick during the worst part in Mick's life thus even the small amount Bob was asking for would have hurt Mick's lifestyle and forced him to spend money on attorneys. Lindsey, Stevie, and Christine had left. Chris recorded Time but would not tour. Mick tried to keep the band going with playing small clubs or special events/tours. Prior to the Dance, this was Fleetwood Mac's darkest days. Mick was not a writer of any of the Mac's songs so it limited his share of album sales. Mick never thought that Christine, Lindsey or Stevie would ever come back to the band. His lifestyle slipping away and now comes Bob suing for royalties of albums that were not even platinum. Good grief, how much was he asking? It could not have been that much but when your world is sinking, you need every dollar you can get. Bob was dead to him and he convinced the band just like with the Irving/Stevie firing of Lindsey to go along with him. And they supported his actions. We would not have known too much about this if it was not for the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame snub.
Lindsey was right, Mick definitely is Piggy in the middle.
