Stevie Nicks confirms new solo album, single Show Them the Way
October 1, 2020
Stevie Nicks is back with new music – her latest single Show Them the Way is set to drop on October 9th!
The Fleetwood Mac star confirmed her latest release during an interview with the Los Angeles Times, revealing her first solo release since 2014 album 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault was born out of a dream she had in the run-up to the 2008 presidential election.
According to Nicks, she was invited to perform at a political benefit for icons of history in her vision, and Martin Luther King, Jr. led her by the arm into a ballroom where John F. Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy and John Lewis were seated, awaiting her.
The dream was so vivid that she wrote a poem based on her recollection, titled The Kennedy’s, which she shared online back in January, 2009.
In addition to the new track, which will be accompanied by a Cameron Crowe-directed music video, she’s also working on a new solo album and will spend the remainder of the pandemic turning the poetry from her journals into lyrics, per the LA Times.
Earlier this year, Eurythmics star Dave Stewart, who collaborated with Nicks on 24 Karat Gold and previous album In Your Dreams, confirmed he was working on tracks with the singer.
It’s the latest project for the star, who will also hit cinema screens later this month with her 24 Karat Gold: The Concert movie. Check out her performance of Gypsy here.
The release will be accompanied by a live album, set to drop at the end of October.

Here is her poem called The Kennedy, which her new single Show Them the Way is based off of. (If this is the song, it sucks.)
The Kennedy’s
I had a fragile dream
In a great house in the Hamptons
I’d been there before
Singing songs ~ doing benefits
I was in a room alone
Putting on my make-up
Like so many things have come to me,
The dress ~ came across the Persian carpet~
As I fell into the dress
A thought came to me
Into my heart~
“I have a dream”
And a door opened~
It’s time now~ they’re waiting
I turned around to face the music (the dreamers)
“I’m ready for the Kennedy’s~”
I don’t know if it was 1960 or 1963
Everything was timeless ~ even me
I wasn’t old~ I wasn’t young~
I was just ~ part of the dream.
A shadow walked with me ~ down the hall
It was Martin Luther King~
All in shadow ~ all before me
Overwhelmed by destiny
Someone said, “sing us a song”
“There’s the piano..
And handed me a drink~
The room was full of hope~
A song would set them free…
I sat at the piano
I stared at the shadows
I sang the words “I have a dream”
He wasn’t my old friend John ~ I didn’t know him…then
But he smiled at me
And I sang these words
“What ever it takes to be free”
I didn’t know these men~
But they knew me~
It was all symbolic,
Nothing was as it seemed.
They all left us in a single shot~
But they didn’t take the dream.
They were there in that house,
Discussing the future~
Drinking champagne.
I was just the piano player~
The voice ~ part of their dream.
I was 35 ~ or maybe I was 15~
It was just a night in the presence
Of Martin Luther King~
I was just a dreamer;
I was ready for the Kennedys…
I got up from the piano
I bowed my head
As I walked thru the room
They touched my hands
Write about hope and a change of plan~
Light up the world if you can~
Light the fire ~ start it over
Tell the world about the dream
Change the world ~ begin again
Start it up ~ make it real~
Back in the room where it all began
My heart began to hurt~
I remember the beauty of the Hamptons
The shadows playing in the sun
And a voice said “The dream is not over~”
“The dream has just begun~”
I spun around to another shadow
Slipping through the door~
My eyes opened ~ wide …
What is all this for?
The shadows said ~ “Don’t forget ~”
“What we were fighting for…”

Why would care about a new album you completely relinquished and renounced your Stevie fandom quite some time ago

I like the poem a lot. It's vivid like Wide Sargasso Sea.
I'm looking forward to hearing Minnie's vocals. Her alto (I think) really props up Stevie's songs live.
I'm not a Sharona buyer. Stevvi was my favorite

You might be forgetting it was a dream she had where MLK was her usher. We cannot control our dreams. I have had many dreams about being onstage in Fleetwood Mac standing between Stevie and Lindsey. I have had many dreams over the years of hearing SN songs that do not exist and so wished I could fully remember them when I awoke. So cool that Stevie remembered her dream and instantly wrote it on paper and then created a cool poem to go along with.

I am not sure who is handling her press right now--Daffy Duck? They should be fired. She is aimlessly floating off on the rings of saturn and her people are letting it happen.
She sounds like more of a loon than she ever did before

It’s one thing to have a dream, it’s another to tell the media about it. I often dreamed that I was married to Michael Jackson. I don’t talk about those dreams much any longer.

I am too but I wait in fear, for I have heard brand new songs of hers over the years and my love secretly died.
Ironically just last night I had a dream I went to a record store and saw a 45 picture sleeve of Stevie's new single. In the dream the song was called HIM and the B-side was called HER. I had to buy a special record player in order to hear it and finally there I was in my room listening to HIM. The song was pretty good, and though I didn't love it at first, I knew with repeated listenings it would grow on me in time. I played it twice in a row and then flipped it over to hear HER. Was I ever so disappointed when I realized it was the exact same song as HIM but with the gender changed to a female. We all know Stevie can be very lazy in her writing at times.

It is really a blessing to have all of these upcoming projects come into fruition especially at her age. I know I have slowed down immensely and I am 15 years younger. I am just going to enjoy each project as though it is her last.

According to an article I came across this morning there will be two versions of it. One an acoustic (the original version), and a second that is rocked up (and will have you dancing around the room according to Stevie herself). Maybe you guys have already heard about this but it was news to me.

I also read somewhere she has something on TV. That should be interesting.
There's no reason she shouldn't be working.

I agree, I’m Stevie's age and today...
I have stripped two beds, washed and changed the linen.
Practised ukulele for 30 minutes, vacuumed upstairs, dusted and cleaned two bathrooms.
Went for a 30 minute power walk, collapsed....
Now I’m cooking dinner...
Ps I’m not at all sure about the poem and will wait for the single..

That would be so funny if she did that, just changed the gender. Well, it was good of her not to change it for Crash into Me.
Also your dream was very creative. It would be great if an artist had a 45 like that with HIM on one side and HER on the other. I could’ve imagined Prince doing this.

STEVIE NICKS WILL RELEASE 2 VERSIONS OF "SHOW THEM THE WAY" ACOUSTIC AND ROCK AND ROLL
Chatting with Stevie Nicks: The Reigning Empress of Rock and Roll
BY MARKOS PAPADATOS - Digital Journal
Two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Stevie Nicks chatted with Digital Journal's Markos Papadatos about her "24 Karat Gold" concert film, her live album, upcoming single on October 9, and she shared the key to longevity in the music industry.
Track and field legend Wilma Rudolph once said: "Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence of the human spirit. We are all the same in this notion: The potential for greatness lives within each of us." Stevie Nicks is a woman that embodies this wise quotation.
Nicks has been hailed by this music aficionado as the perennial "Empress of Rock and Roll," and rightfully so. She possesses one of the most significant and powerful voices in the music business; moreover, she has had an illustrious music career that has spanned well over five decades. She scored six Top 10 albums, eight Grammy nominations for her solo work, and she has sold in excess of 140 million albums collectively as a solo recording artist and as part of the iconic rock group Fleetwood Mac.
She earned several Grammy Awards as a member of the Fleetwood Mac: their seminal studio album Rumours won the Grammy for "Album of the Year" in 1978, and two Fleetwood Mac albums have been inducted into the coveted Grammy Hall of Fame: Rumours in 2003 and Fleetwood Mac in 2016 respectively. Last year, she made music history because she was the first woman inducted into the coveted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice.
This interview delves into the conscience of Stevie Nicks as a prolific songwriter, vocalist, poet, storyteller, and a song stylist.
Stevie Nicks — 24 Karat Gold The Concert
She will be debuting the "Stevie Nicks 24 Karat Gold The Concert," via Trafalgar Releasing, on two nights only: October 21 and 25 respectively. This concert film was directed and produced by Joe Thomas. Acclaimed guitar player Waddy Wachtel served as the musical director of this tour. It was filmed in Indianapolis and Pittsburgh back in 2017. It showcases her intimate storytelling and her inspirations for some of her most famous and timeless recordings. "Who knew four years ago when I went out on that tour?" she said. "This was one of the most important records that I've ever done, in my opinion. I wanted to go back and pick them up. It had 16 songs that I always planned to re-do because they were all recorded at some point and I wasn't happy with how they originally came out."
"The song 'If You Were My Love' is a ballad that I love to sing so much, and I wanted to make sure that it was perfect. It's the song that I love to sing most on stage with the girls," she said.
"Stevie Nicks 24 Karat Gold The Concert" will be available at select cinemas, drive-ins and exhibition spaces all over the world. With this concert film, Nicks will be taking her fans and listeners on a trip down memory lane, where she will provide them with a virtual front-row seat to her live shows. "The film is coming out soon and this tour that we filmed was the most fun that I've ever had on a tour," she acknowledged. "When you can add six or seven new songs into a setlist, it changes the whole show, and it makes it seem like the whole show was brand new."
Concert setlist: An eclectic program of classic and newer songs
Her setlist for this concert film includes such fan-favorite songs as "Rhiannon," "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," "Edge of Seventeen," "Stand Back," and "Landslide," among many other classics from her extensive musical catalog. "Even the older songs that weren't on the 24 Karat Gold album become new again because of the six or seven new songs that nobody has ever heard before. When I walked off stage, that whole show felt new to me, and when you watch the film, you can really see that," Nicks said.
"It's always a risk when you add new songs to a show. I hope that my intuition said 'people will love this because I am going to tell them a good story' but my risk factor is definitely there, so when we left the stage that very first night, I was able to look at the audience, and I realized that it worked very well. We had all the confidence in the world to continue on from that moment then," she added.
"When I recorded the 24 Karat Gold album, we were on a break from Fleetwood Mac. I went to Nashville for only two weeks, and then I came home and we finished it at my house. The album was done in five weeks, and I gave it to Warner Bros. and that was it. It was amazing that I actually pulled it off and it actually happened, and I was so excited about it," she said.
"In May of 2020, I went to Chicago to edit the stories of this film," she recalled. "I was a little scared to do it because of COVID, but we took precautions and went to Chicago. We stayed at a house by a golf course where nobody had been since the previous October and we went to a studio where nobody had been for months and I was there for a month and that's where we edited the 46 minutes of stories. That's when I actually started working again.
"Getting this film all done was not easy especially since you couldn't get in your car and go to a studio," she acknowledged. "Everything that we have been doing was done pretty much from home except for the short trip to Chicago. I actually am being creative now, and I am really happy about that."
Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders served as her opening act for the majority of the "24 Karat Gold Tour." "It was so fun to be o the road with Chrissie Hynde. She and I became really good friends, and Chrissie does not like everybody. She's a badass chick," she said.
Live album
In addition, Nicks will be releasing a two-CD and digital edition on October 30 via BMG, and it will beavailable exclusively at Target. It will feature live versions of 17 of her greatest hits.
"I am super careful and I refuse to get COVID because if I get this virus, I will never sing again. I am absolutely sure of that because you get this cough that never goes away and your lungs get compromised so you won't be able to sing a whole show anymore. I am determined above all else that I will never catch this thing. The way I am treating it is still super careful," she said.
Music and Songwriting Inspirations
She shared that "everything" inspires her music and songwriting. "A movie can inspire you to write a formal poem, and for me, that's all I need," she said. "Also, meeting somebody and running into something that you haven't seen in a long time and talking about something that happened a long time ago can also inspire you. Reading something in a book, just one sentence can inspire you."
"If you are a songwriter, the reason that you continue to be a songwriter, is because you are continually inspired just by the world around you and your inspiration never really runs out. You don't have to continually be having love affairs to continually write songs. You have all your memories of your love affairs and you can bring them all in with one snap of your fingers. You can bring everything back and you can add things that are happening to you in the present and come up with new things continually. I'm sure you love to write because you are an interviewer and I love to write because I'm a songwriter. If you love to write, you are always looking for something cool to write about so you are open to the world," she elaborated.
"When I write, I gather all my poetry together," she said. "When I am getting ready to write songs and I am getting ready to go to the piano, then I am going to go through my last 10 journals. I am going to look to the left side of the page and I am going to pick out any poems that are pretty much done. I will type them up and then I will put them all in a book, and then I will go to the piano. I don't bring the musical part in unless I actually have a real reason, only then I will make a record," she said.
Digital age and social media
On being an artist in the digital age, Nicks said, "It's the world that we live in. Even though I don't have a computer and I have an iPhone that is not plugged in, it's just a camera, which I love. I don't go on social media and I only use my website for really important things such as September 11, 2001, Hurricane Katrina and the Coronavirus."
"If I went on social media and I became a member of that whole club, it would change everything I do," she said. "It would change the way that I write and it would change the way that I deal with the world. Social media is just not my world, I like my world."
"My world is old-fashioned, and I would like to keep it that way," she added. "I think people are desperately grasping to go back to the old ways."
Career-defining moments
An iconic rock singer-songwriter, Nicks opened up about some of her career-defining moments. "In the beginning, in 1968, as part of Fritz, we opened for every big band because we lived in San Francisco. We opened for Janis Joplin several times, Jimi Hendrix for 75,000 people, and we opened for Buffalo Springfield, Chicago, and Santana," she said.
"The perk of being the eighth person on a bill is that you get to stand on stage and watch all the other bands," she said. "I got to sit on the side of the stage, somewhere in the shadows, and I got to watch Janis Joplin and I did the same thing for Jimi Hendrix. Janis could just hold that audience in her hands and she was pretty hardcore and a badass. I got a lot of little moments from her. Jimi Hendrix was very humble and super graceful, he was just magical and you just wanted some of that Jimi Hendrix magic."
"Also, Grace Slick was beautiful, she had that voice, and was just awesome. She would just open her mouth and out came this effortless, massive voice. I was able to take a few little things from Grace Slick. These moments in the first three years that I was in a rock band were super important to me because it formed who I was on stage," she said.
"Then again, there was Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne, who inspired me how to write songs and how to phrase my poetry. I also loved Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. As a songwriter, these are the people that really touched my heart," she added.
'Show Them The Way'
Nicks also spoke about her forthcoming single "Show Them The Way," which will be released on October 9. This song was inspired by a dream that she had one night in 2008, at the time of the Democratic primaries, where Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were fighting over who would become the presidential candidate that year.
She started watching documentaries that pertained to the fight for the civil rights movement. It involved the dreams of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., Bobby Kennedy, and John Lewis. As a result, she was immersed and hypnotized.
"It was written in 2008 about all those amazing documentaries I was watching during that two-month period when I was back in Chicago editing another music film. I wrote it and I made it into a song from the prose, and then I made a little piano demo of it and I just put it away," she said.
"While it was too complicated to come out in 2010 with the In Your Dreams album, it was supposed to come out now," she said. "I am super glad that the gods were with me on that one."
"I hope that people understand what this is. This poem that I made into this song is a prayer," she added.
This dream was a cinematic story with a beginning, a middle and an end. She started writing the story the moment that her eyes opened. "I feel that this dream was so real," she admitted.
"In this dream, I saw Martin Luther King Jr. took my arm and walked me down the hallway into this big room where the Kennedys were and all these people. They were all there and I could so feel it," she said.
"While dreams are ridiculous in their own way, this dream stayed with me long enough for me to get up and grab some paper and a pencil to write it down in prose, and then be able to actually write it into a poem, and then put it into music. Then, I just put it away, and just let it stay in a Gothic trunk of lost songs until now. I never recorded it until now. It was meant to be," she said.
"This is a bipartisan work. It's a song and a poem that is meant to bring people together," she underscored. "This is a prayer for people that are freaked out about the world today about politics, the virus, and everything. There are two versions that are being released together: an acoustic version, which was the first one that I did, and a rock and roll version, which will blow your mind and it make you dance around your house."
She expressed her love for reading and writing poetry. "I love to stand up and read poetry to people. When you write poetry, you try to create that world for somebody else, when you are reading it. I've read this poem so many times now that I am almost able to look away from the words, and I almost have it memorized now."
"I almost compare that to being a ballet dancer," she said. "If you are a ballerina, you have to practice, practice, and practice until you are absolutely sure that when you take that leap on stage that you are going to land in the arms of the person that is catching you. Only then, when you get to that point, you can really perform as a ballerina because you are not worried about making a mistake, you know it so well and you are so ready and you are so rehearsed that you can walk on stage and really perform."
On the title of the current chapter of her life, she responded, "Show Them The Way." "That is it. That is our prayer," she exclaimed.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame history
Last year, Nicks made music history because she was the first woman inducted into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. "It's a big honor and an unexpected one," she admitted. "It did change the numbers a little bit: one woman who has gone in twice, and 22 men who have gone in twice. I think that says something for the power of women and I hope that it will impact the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and they will induct a few more women into the Hall of Fame because there should be more women."
"That night when I got inducted, I think I spoke too long. When I run into The Cure, I will totally apologize to them for talking so much in my speech. I didn't know much about them but I had so much fun watching The Cure on stage and I started listening to their music. I really enjoyed their stage performance, so not only will I apologize for taking up their extra 10 minutes but I will also tell them that I am now listening to their music," she said.
Key to Longevity in the Music Business
On the key to longevity in the music industry, Nicks shared, "Even if your music doesn't remain incredibly current, you remain current. I listen to current music and all the current artists on radio. I make mixtapes and they are all in it. I would have a Joni Mitchell song and a song from Haim. Right now, I've been listening to Crosby, Stills & Nash since their music is very comforting to me."
"I am also listening to Harry Styles these days. I think his Fine Line album is one of the best albums of all time. He was ready to go into rehearsal before this pandemic started. It's okay though because Fine Line is such a 'fine' album," she said with a sweet laugh.
Advice for Aspiring Musicians
For young and aspiring musicians, Nicks encouraged them to persevere. "Don't give up. I never gave up," she said, prior to noting that her mother inspired her to go to college, and that experience helped turn Nicks into an independent woman. "That's who I am and that's who Christine McVie is, and that's the promise her and I made together in the first six months that we both joined Fleetwood Mac," she said.
"I told Christine that we will never stand in a room of famous guitar players who will not treat us right. We will just get up say 'this party is over,' and we will walk out," Nicks said.
Message for Loyal Fans
For her dedicated and longtime fans, she remarked about her three upcoming musical projects, "I hope that I am able to throw out these three things right now at a time when everybody can really use some new material, especially new important things. This concert film is about as close as to going to to a real live concert as you are going to get for a while."
"The venue, PPG Paints Arena, where the concert film was shot in Pittsburgh was huge, it reminded me of a mini Wembley Stadium. I knew it was going to be a great audience before we even got there. It was a courageous audience, so of course, thank you God for giving me that outrageous audience since that just makes you 100 percent better on stage. I get a lot of magic from the cosmos, I always have, and I am always really appreciative of it," she elaborated.
Success in the Eyes of Stevie Nicks
Regarding her definition of the word success, Nicks said, "Being able to still book a year tour is pretty much the meaning of success because that means that you are still getting to take your work to the people around the world. If you are not 'successful,' then you are not going to be able to do that as well."
"For me, all those years that we put in the beginning, to create what we have now, is fantastic because it allows us, just like the ballerina, to be able to do new things and write new music such as 'Show Me The Way.' How happy am I to have this right now and hopefully, the next time that I go on the road, once this virus is under control, I will be able to play this new song on stage and take this song all over the world. That is really exciting because who knew that this would all happen the way that it has happened," she exclaimed.
"I can't wait until I can go into rehearsal and put the song 'Show Me The Way' into rotation. My girl singers did such amazing singing on it that I am so proud of them. Wait until you hear it. This song is right up there with 'Edge of Seventeen' and 'Stand Back.' This song is as strong as any of those songs," she added.
Overall, her highly-anticipated concert film, Stevie Nicks — 24 Karat Gold The Concert, her live album, as well as her soon-to-be-released single "Show Them The Way" are a must for all fans of Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac, rock music, as well as for anybody that appreciates good, quality music. Her life story and music career are an inspiration for us all. "I can't wait until I can go into rehearsal and put the song 'Show Me The Way' into rotation. My girl singers did such amazing singing on it that I am so proud of them. Wait until you hear it. This song is right up there with 'Edge of Seventeen' and 'Stand Back.' This song is as strong as any of those songs," she added."
She is as delusional as the covid and drug rattled orange blob right now ..if this song is as good as Edge I will vote for him myself:laugh:

Nicks has been hailed by this music aficionado as the perennial "Empress of Rock and Roll," and rightfully so. She possesses one of the most significant and powerful voices in the music business;
I've never heard this self(?) proclaimed title.
POWERFUL voice? $he's got a 3 note range at best these days. Hell, for the past 20 years.

The poem is horrendous. But I do like the lyrics from Straight Back in there.
The poem is horrendous and she gave this poem to a Kennedy. Can you imagine his reaction when he read it? I’m sure he was like - WTF???
What a strange world she lives in ...

Sometimes I can't tell if she's getting crazier by the year or if the same behavior I found alluring as a 15 year old kid is viewed a lot differently as a 35 year old adult.
Combination of both I suppose. I became a fan in 96/97 when she used to be so grounded and down to earth. It's such a contrast to the self infatuation that has occured in the past 10+ years.
I remember back when she took interest in her fans, you could send a christmas card to her in paradise valley and she would sign your Timespace CD booklet.
LOL...I remember in 1998 during the Enchanted tour she would remark about being incredibly nervous because she did more talking to introduce songs because it was a box set tour. It's laughable to think about now considering her intro to gypsy alone is longer than all of her Enchanted Tour intros combined!

I think she's just blown into a hugely inflated ego balloon.
I remember thinking about Christine's return, she commented on how CHRISTINE needs to physically get into shape. And kept making the return about herself via, IIII offered her 5 million dollars. IIIII didn't want to be the only girl, IIIIII sent a spirt catcher that got Christine back. IIIIII told Christine what it was like to be on the road and how hard it is. I
IIIII told Christine it was her band, she can come back if she wants to.
So both. HUGE ego that keeps getting inflated. Everything and everyone, even MLK is all about her.

On edge of 72, Stevie Nicks just wants to sing a song live
Entertainment
NEW YORK — It’s Saturday at 9:30 p.m. and Stevie Nicks is singing on the phone.
The rock icon is at her Los Angeles home, where she’s been cooped up since December after wrapping the “An Evening with Fleetwood Mac” tour. She arrived there at first to relax after spending a year on the road and to celebrate the holidays. But then the coronavirus pandemic hit.
Stuck at the house is both good and bad for Nicks. The good news? Her house is a creative oasis where all her favorite musical instruments live. It’s where she spent a year recording her 2011 album “In Your Dreams” with Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard.
Her current 10-month stint — and counting — at home even fueled her to record the new single “Show Them the Way,” out on Friday.
“It’s beautiful,” she says after singing the song’s chorus at the end of a 90-minute-plus interview, where Nicks excitedly discussed everything from her admiration for late icons and pals Tom Petty and Prince to her relationships with Harry Styles and Beyoncé.
The bad news? Nicks is 72 and doesn’t want to be homebound when she prefers to be singing live on the road.
“This pandemic is more than just a pandemic for me. This is stealing what I consider to be my last youthful years,” Nicks told The Associated Press. “I don’t have just 10 years to hang around and wait for this thing to go away. I have places to go, people to sing for, another album to make. With every day that goes by, it’s like taking this time away from me. That I think is the hardest thing for me.”
“I have a lot of friends that are 60 and they’re going, ‘Oh I’m so old, I’m 60.’ I’m like, ‘You know what, the violins of the world are playing for you. You’re going to really appreciate 60 when you turn 72,’” she continued. “I don’t feel like the whole world is really getting behind getting this to go away. I feel like people are just thinking it really is just magically going away. All it takes is a few people that don’t wear a mask to spread. Just let one person catch it from you and there it goes — it’s like the never-ending story. That worries me because I’m going, ‘Will it really be gone by the end of 2021?
“Will it be safe next year for us to walk into Madison Square Garden?’ I don’t know that it will,” she said.
Nicks is hoping to satisfy fans she would typically see in-person on tour with the new concert film “Stevie Nicks 24 Karat Gold The Concert.” It was recorded over two nights during her 2016-17 “24 Karat Gold” tour and will be available at select theaters and drive-ins on Oct. 21 and 25. A CD and digital album of the concert will be released Oct. 30.
“As we started to understand that this COVID thing was not a joke, I started going to myself, ‘Well, you know what? This may be the closest to going to a big, big concert that’s actually not from 1977 that is new,’” Nicks said. “It’s brand new and it’s fantastic.”
The only time she left her West Coast home was to edit the film in Chicago. She took a private jet to the home on a golf course that had been vacant for some time, spending a month there and editing down hours of footage to create the 140-minute film.
“They can’t do it without me. I won’t allow it,” Nicks said. “We got it all done. It was really fun. We were really safe.”
But at the end of the trip, Nicks tripped in the snow and fractured her knee: “I was like screaming as I went through the air and saw the gravel driveway coming toward my face and just made a quick turn. So, I didn’t fall face down and caught myself. Because of my strong, tambourine arms, I was able to stop myself from crashing even worse. It was a really bad fall, but it’s OK.
“It’s had a hard time getting better,” she continued. “I hurt this knee really bad, my left knee, before, years ago. I had been dealing with it and fixed it. …I had just really gotten it to be to the place where it was totally better, then I fractured it. So now it’s almost better,” she said.
Apart from producing her concert film and recording “Show Them the Way,” Nicks has been busy in the home where she’s been creative in the past: “Another famous rock ‘n’ roll star, who will not be mentioned, sent me a song that he wants me to sing on,” she revealed.
Though “Show Them the Way” arrives Friday, Nicks said the song came to her in a dream in 2008 when Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were competing for the Democratic Party nomination for president. In the dream Nicks is performing at a political benefit where attendees include Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., John Lennon, John Lewis, John F. Kennedy and Bobby Kennedy.
Dave Grohl plays drums on the new song, which was produced by Greg Kurstin (Sia, Adele, Beck). Cameron Crowe is directing the music video.
“This song really is a prayer. This song is a prayer for people to unite. A prayer for people to get together,” Nicks said.
“I didn’t really realize that until just the last few days. The chorus was written a week or so later,” she continued.
“The chorus, and I can sing it for you, it goes, ‘Please God show them the way/Please God on this day/Spirits all give us strength/Peace will come if you really want it/I think we’re just in time to save it/Please God, oh please God, show them the way.’”

Like Illume, the production is excellent. She snared one of the best producers around and the people she is working with are excellent.

Also, Cameron Crow is a great director. Will her video be great and why a video with no album to sell?

I like the sound but that lyric — that’s a really incoherent lyric: bits of phrases with marginal reference to something-or-other that may or may not have been politically relevant at some point all thrown into a blender. That’s not lyric writing, it’s verbatim transcription from a diary. It’s Stevie Salad. It’s copy-pasta. I do wish Stevie would build songs out of her musings and put some serious work into it, the way she once did (Dreams, Landslide, Gold Dust Woman, Crystal, Crying in the Night).

It is rambling and sort of tuneless. It seems well produced but I think it deserved the runaway train feel of Mabel Normand rather than this calm and serious feel. Even Dance with the Devil was a bit more convincing and seemed to go somewhere unlike this. Her vocal lacks conviction and intensity too. Lyrics are so...American, I guess, doesn't really resonate with me. Overall it is meh and I won't download it or anything.

I don't think anyone will ever be able to reign her in again as far as the illogical, clumsy, rambling, too-long lyrics. In Your Dreams could have been a great pop-rock album if this tendency had been curbed. But I do like the production! If she makes another album I hope it's produced like this.

Here are my unsolicited first impressions of the song:
1. The Production:
Props to whoever produced this. Similar to her other stream-of-conscious songs (most notably Mabel Normand), I can't imagine how daunting of task it was to make a song out of the source lyrics. They did a great job pulling everything they could have out of this song! I like the drumming and the piano a lot. Even if they aren't particularly noteworthy, they fit the song well and provide strong support for the message.
2. The Lyrics:
The lyrics are sometimes interesting but mostly incoherent. That might be what she's going for- a series of vague, barely connected lines and events. It relies on dream logic, I get it. It definitely could have used another rewrite to eliminate some of the awkward passages and trim some of the fat. Lines like "singing songs, doing benefits" are awkward, same with "the dress came across the Persian carpet". It is possible to evoke imagery without just bluntly describing the room, Stevie. Some lines are better: "Into my heart, I have a dream, And a door opened, I turned to face the music" and "All in shadow, all before me, overwhelmed by destiny" in particular. Overall, I find the lyrics much more difficult to connect with than similar songs like Mabel Normand and Illume.
3. The vocals:
Her voice on this is not going to be everyone's cup of tea but it doesn't phase me. It's much stronger than I was expecting, and on par with Mabel Normand or You Can't Fix This. Love her energy towards the end of the song.
4. The message:
I was not very convinced by the song at all- I felt nothing for it... until the last two minutes or so. It sort of tied the whole song together. Her end-takeaway from her dream is summarized with the line "don't forget what we were fighting for", referencing the efforts of all of the peaceful leaders. I love that message, its so timely in this period of horrible unrest but its not preachy or overtly political.
5. The most appealing thing about this song is its earnestness. Despite the clumsiness, you can tell that *Stevie* felt this was a beautiful story that needed to be told. It doesn't feel like a bid for attention- if it was it would have more direct references to the current climate. That doesn't mean its objectively great, but I can tell her heart was in it and that makes a huge difference in my appreciation for the song. Despite a rocky start, she was resonating with me by the end of the song when she was belting "set them free" and repeating the chorus.
So overall, I think the song is strong for her latter day efforts. The individual components are not particularly impressive (and even sometimes embarrassing in the lyrics) but the song achieved what it set out to do, and I'd call it a worthy addition to her catalog. I'll be curious to see if I'll warm to the lyrics over time like I did with Illume.
Sidenote: I love the single artwork

I agree with much of what Netter 75 says, but I overall I DO like it. The production is outstanding, great piano effect and fuller band sound towards the end. It does however have the same issues of her latter day writing, her inability to stick with what made her great- less is more! Imagine if players only love you when there playing had a full description of what they were playing? If you take out some of the middle of the song, where it does lose steam, the build towards the end would be much more effective. The last two minutes are really quite good and she turns on the vocals to a much greater effect. Timing out at about 3:30 we would have ourselves a winner. So if there's someone on here with good editing skills, we may have a good song become great.

Maybe Cameron edited her out because he realized she actually needed 6 hours but had got lazy & quit (just like she did with the lyrics)
But she does sound inspired and manages to (mostly) avoid the terrible flatness that plagues her later work.

Whatever filter they are using on her voice worked. Her vocals were not terrible. I also noticed in Sheryl Crow's song Prove You Wrong that the filter they used on Stevie's vocal worked. She sounded good. It is possible for Stevie at 72 to do an album and sound good. Miley Cyrus and the rest of them are all using filters now.

I like the production, and I think in 2020, a song that is a prayer for the world will resonate with folks.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD....
Can someone please tell Stevie that there's no shame in editing your work? It isn't an insult to your creativity or talent. It just shows you're not a narcissistic lunatic who thinks every thought they've ever had is some kind of prophetic message that must remain exactly as originally transcribed. Her refusal to edit her own lyrics or have someone help her edit them is maddening, exhausting, and embarrassing.
I'm no Grammy winning producer or songwriter, yet in 20 minutes I was able to rework her lyrics into something that at least has a modicum of structure, follows a relatively coherent train of thought, and doesn't repeat the same word 6 times in a single phrase. I can only imagine that someone with more experience and expertise would be able to do the same and do it better.
Intro:
Please God, show 'em the way
Please God, on this day
Spirits all give ‘em the strength
Peace can come if you really want it
Verse 1:
I had a fragile dream in a gray house in the Hamptons
It must have been 1963
I'd been there before, singing songs in nameless mansions
Everything was timeless, even me
Alone in the room, blood red lipstick in my hand
Only a mirror there to see
I put on the final touches a place like this commands
I was ready for the Kennedys
Please God, show 'em the way
Please God, on this day
Spirits all give ‘em the strength
Peace can come if you really want it
Verse 2:
The door opened, I was ushered down the hall
By one Martin Luther King
All in shadow, all before me, overwhelmed by destiny,
He said, “There’s the piano, here’s a drink,”
John was standing in the corner, smiling as I sang
I didnÂ’t know them, they didnÂ’t know me
They were drinking champagne, planning how things should change
Whatever it takes to be free
Chorus:
I sang
Please God, show 'em the way
Please God, on this day
Spirits all give ‘em the strength
Peace can come if you really want it
Bridge:
Gone in a single shot
Nothing is as it seems
It seems the world forgot
Gone, but they left the dream
One shot is all you need
So take it, the time has come
The dream is not over
The dream has just begun
Verse 3:
Back where it all began, my eyes opened wide
Sunlight slipped through the door
As I lie in bed, a shadow came to my side,
And I asked, “What is this all for?”
And the shadow replied
DonÂ’t forget, donÂ’t forget what we were fighting for
Chorus / Outro:
Please God, show 'em the way
Please God, on this day
Spirits all give ‘em the strength
Peace can come if you really want it
Please God, show 'em the way
Please God, on this day
Light the fire, start it over
Tell the world about the dream
Start it up and make it real
Please God, show 'em the way
(I believe it)
Please God, on this day
(Don't forget it)
Spirits all give ‘em the strength
(Don't forget what
We were fighting for)
Think we're just in time to say
Peace can come if you fight for it
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. It's a shame because the production on the track is great and the message of the song seems genuine. If only it weren't a 6.5 minute rambling, clunky mess...

You did a great job. I too played the song and tried to edit the lyrics and change them so it flowed better. I changed "fragile" dream to strange dream. And I definately took out the part about the floating dress. LOL

I like the production, and I think in 2020, a song that is a prayer for the world will resonate with folks.
I think it needs some editing, as there are some lyrics that really pull me out of the moment. I could see this being described as a mystical take on "Abraham, Martin, and John"
Sometimes the lyrics are too detailed, focusing on the mundane. Like I half expect her to sing about when the Persian rug was last vacuumed.
But I think it works as background music for the montage.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD....
Can someone please tell Stevie that there's no shame in editing your work? It isn't an insult to your creativity or talent. It just shows you're not a narcissistic lunatic who thinks every thought they've ever had is some kind of prophetic message that must remain exactly as originally transcribed. Her refusal to edit her own lyrics or have someone help her edit them is maddening, exhausting, and embarrassing.
I'm no Grammy winning producer or songwriter, yet in 20 minutes I was able to rework her lyrics into something that at least has a modicum of structure, follows a relatively coherent train of thought, and doesn't repeat the same word 6 times in a single phrase. I can only imagine that someone with more experience and expertise would be able to do the same and do it better.
Intro:
Please God, show 'em the way
Please God, on this day
Spirits all give ‘em the strength
Peace can come if you really want it
Verse 1:
I had a fragile dream in a gray house in the Hamptons
It must have been 1963
I'd been there before, singing songs in nameless mansions
Everything was timeless, even me
Alone in the room, blood red lipstick in my hand
Only a mirror there to see
I put on the final touches a place like this commands
I was ready for the Kennedys
Please God, show 'em the way
Please God, on this day
Spirits all give ‘em the strength
Peace can come if you really want it
Verse 2:
The door opened, I was ushered down the hall
By one Martin Luther King
All in shadow, all before me, overwhelmed by destiny,
He said, “There’s the piano, here’s a drink,”
John was standing in the corner, smiling as I sang
I didnÂ’t know them, they didnÂ’t know me
They were drinking champagne, planning how things should change
Whatever it takes to be free
Chorus:
I sang
Please God, show 'em the way
Please God, on this day
Spirits all give ‘em the strength
Peace can come if you really want it
Bridge:
Gone in a single shot
Nothing is as it seems
It seems the world forgot
Gone, but they left the dream
One shot is all you need
So take it, the time has come
The dream is not over
The dream has just begun
Verse 3:
Back where it all began, my eyes opened wide
Sunlight slipped through the door
As I lie in bed, a shadow came to my side,
And I asked, “What is this all for?”
And the shadow replied
DonÂ’t forget, donÂ’t forget what we were fighting for
Chorus / Outro:
Please God, show 'em the way
Please God, on this day
Spirits all give ‘em the strength
Peace can come if you really want it
Please God, show 'em the way

Light the fire, start it over

Stevie Nicks: Coronavirus is stealing my last youthful years
Stevie Nicks says the coronavirus pandemic is "stealing" her "last youthful years".
The Fleetwood Mac singer - who turned 72 this year - is frustrated by the current health crisis as she doesn't just have "10 years" to just wait around for the virus to go away.
She said: "This pandemic is more than just a pandemic for me. This is stealing what I consider to be my last youthful years. I don’t have just 10 years to hang around and wait for this thing to go away. I have places to go, people to sing for, another album to make. With every day that goes by, it’s like taking this time away from me. That I think is the hardest thing for me."
And Stevie worries the virus might not even be gone by the end of 2021.
She added: "I have a lot of friends that are 60 and they’re going, ‘Oh I’m so old, I’m 60.’ I’m like, ‘You know what, the violins of the world are playing for you. You’re going to really appreciate 60 when you turn 72.' I don’t feel like the whole world is really getting behind getting this to go away. I feel like people are just thinking it really is just magically going away. All it takes is a few people that don’t wear a mask to spread. Just let one person catch it from you and there it goes - it’s like the never-ending story. That worries me because I’m going, ‘Will it really be gone by the end of 2021? Will it be safe next year for us to walk into Madison Square Garden?’ I don’t know that it will."

I saw that Variety article and was like Whhhaaatttt???? "Youthful years"? Boy she's a mess.
I had not heard that she was sick the night of the RRHOF or that she'd gone into ICU for a week afterwards........
To her, this is still nonpartisan talk, though it may not be taken as such by all. “The whole thing has become so political. It’s not political, everybody! It’s not. It’s a virus. It doesn’t care what side you’re on. It’s going to kill you. And I’ve said that if I get it it’ll kill me. I have compromised lungs. I was really sick last year. The night of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame [which she was inducted into in 2019 as a solo artist after previously being in as a member of Fleetwood Mac], I knew before I went on stage that something was off, so I had to really like pull it together. The next day I got really sick, and I ended up going into the hospital in Philadelphia for a week in ICU with double pneumonia and and asthma. And talk about your oxygen levels going down — my oxygen levels were hardly existing. If I was to go on a ventilator… My mom was on a ventilator for a month, and she was hoarse for the rest of her life. All the other side effects that come along with this virus… You may get over it and just be like, ‘Great, I’m good. It’s gone.’ It’s not gone. It comes back in little ways to attack you forever.
“So you don’t want to get it. It’s like I’ve built a thin shield of magical plastic around me, you know? Because I don’t want my career to be over. I don’t want to not pull on those leather boots again.”
You know what can really compromise your lungs? Smoking cigarettes for years. Just saying. Is it asthma, or COPD?
Last of her youthful years.??
I think she means the last few years when she can still do stuff, before she gets really old. Too old soon to be able to perform.
Say up to late 70s before bits start to drop off, or seize up..
I quite like song lyrics about the mundane...it’s a real talent to be able to write songs about everyday stuff we all do. And yet make it moving.
Ray Davies from the Kinks springs to mind.
Neil Hannon from the Divine comedy another
........Unfortunately, Stevie does not have it......

I love the song. At this point, I’m grateful she still makes music; and, I am not shocked whatsoever that some of you miserable dullards would be on here moaning and groaning with your warped expectations and critiques. You are consistent, if nothing else.
The video, however, is ****. There’s a comment on YouTube by someone which made me laugh loudly: “I love the cinematography!” IT’S A POWERPOINT.

The song is really growing on me. The piano version is a bit dull, but the rock version I am enjoying more as I listen. I kept singing the chorus to myself all day yesterday. If only it had been edited, especially the first and second verse it really could have been a great song. But I don't think Stevie cares if it's a hit or not. I am surprised it's done as well as it has.

Rocker Stevie Nicks Vows: ‘I’m Serious… If Donald Trump Is Re-Elected, I’m Contemplating Leaving The United States’
Rocker Stevie Nicks is thinking about leaving the United States if President Trump is re-elected, stating that she is considering an extraterrestrial existence.
“And I’m thinking: Oh, space. Maybe I can talk Elon Musk into giving us a jet and letting me pick 50 people,” she said during an interview with Variety while promoting her new single “Show Them the Way.”
Last Friday, Stevie Nicks released the music video for her new single. The video which was produced by Almost Famous and Jerry Maguire filmmaker Cameron Crowe continuously juxtaposes photos of BLM protests with the civil rights marches of the 60s. The video additionally pays respect to the deceased Јustice Ruth Bader Ginsberg.
“Racism in the last four years is so much worse than it was. I’m 72 years old. I lived through the ’60s. I’ve seen all this. I fought for Roe vs. Wade; that was my generation’s fight,” she stated.
“And I don’t want to live in a country that is so divisive. I go, like, well, if this starts over and there are another four years of this, then I’m going, but we’re not welcome anywhere. So where can I go? And I’m thinking: Oh, space. Maybe I can talk Elon Musk into giving us a jet and letting me pick 50 people, and we’re like the arc, and someone can take us and let us live on another planet until the next four years are over,” she continued.
Nicks revealed that her new song is meant to be non-partisan:
“I hope people understand that it’s nonpartisan, that it’s not for Republicans, it’s not for Democrats. It’s meant to be a moment of peace for everyone, and… you know the silly thing where people say ‘Can’t everybody just get along?’ It’s like, can we just figure a way out of this horrific thing that we have walked into? That’s why I released this now.”
The rocker claimed the single is intended to be a “prayer.”
“I hope that this song and its words will be seen as a prayer, a prayer for our country, and a prayer for the world,” she said.
Before the 2016 presidential election, Stevie Nicks predicted a “landslide” victory for Hillary Clinton.

I listened to the minute samples of the song on iTunes. I don’t have a problem with the music or her voice. Dave Stewart knows how to curate her. But those lyrics are an unbelievable embarrassment—to her, to the band she claims she loves, and to her fans. The lyrics are outright offensive to anyone who has done real work in equity and civil rights, especially those who have fought the fight when it wasn’t marketable to do so.
Shame on her. For being so self-centered and tone deaf.

Oh no Stevie, please don't embarrass yourself by jumping in with that crowd of celebrities who swear to God that they will leave the country if this person or that person is elected. They just come out looking really silly when it comes and goes and there they are, still here. Delving too deeply into politics is definitely going to spoil the carefully curated sense of mystique that she has always worked to have.

The only problem with Prove You Wrong was she did not always sound like herself. I recall you did not even recognize her in the trio. In this song, you do know that it is Stevie Nicks.

I don’t like her talking about her aborted baby. I just don’t. Maybe it’s relevant to her since she has become political and abortion is such a big issue but it bothers me. When Don Henley used it to sell his book I lost a great amount of respect for him. I just always questions the motives and whether it’s a life or not is debatable. Tacky.

Curious if by filters you mean Auto Tune? If that's the case, then anyone can sound like Whitney, Celine, Barbra or Karen Carpenter.
What I'd love to know is what was Stevie doing out in Sugar Grove in Feb 2008 and having dreams about MLK and the Kennedys? Perhaps Joe Thomas can answer that question.
