Time to pack those boots up anyway and work on some other projects. The world doesn't need another greatest hit tour or to hear Stand Back one more time and especially don't need to hear the currently configuration of FM. If you haven't seen her/them yet, then stay home and watch the video. Not being mean just addressing reality that the best years are way behind her.

They really do need to retire. They're just too old to do it properly anymore, and their voices are gone. Relying on backup singers to do your show is just lame. They've become a farce.

No more touring, Christine looks like Weekend at Bernies on stage. She cant play or sing anymore. It's not the same without LB. The thought of hearing a nasal uninspired Rhiannon for the 100th time is not appealing. She ruined the band by getting rid of LB and i have zero interest in seeing them at this age WITHOUT LB.

The only thing I want at this point is the Lindsey solo album thats in the can and that's it. Stevie doesn't take ANY chances anymore. NONE. Lindsey is the only one left in the band with an ounce of artistic credibility. And before you say Ii'm a Lindsey fanatic and a Stevie hater....you're wrong. I was a huge SN fan until she eroded that fandom over the last few years. She's GROSS now.

I agree that LindSEY was the only gift they had left. His energy was great, even if his voice wasn't. And yet the old goat fired him. I actually think his intense energy onstage was a part of the reason. He was outshining her by far, and $he couldn't stand it.

I was always a Christine fan, until she had her spine removed. Kept Bob Welch out of the R&RHOF(which I did my best to get over), and then didn't stand up for LindSEY(which was the last straw- she's just an old company shill - my lifetime heroine, now not much better than $tevie).

$tevie's just a joke now, but $he and Dick will milk this until one of them dies. I'll bet even if John and Chris died, $tevie and Dick would keep on keepin' on.

One of the most narcissistic things she has ever said was the Greenpeace speech at the end of the Farewell Tour 1990. She told fans to get involved and "do it for me." My local paper had a fit about that statement and accused her of talking like a narcistic and arrogant queen. Do it for me? Really.
I wish I could find the concert review that appeared in the Pittsburgh Press in November 1990.

The world doesn't need...to hear the currently configuration of FM.
I’m sure there’s nothing on the table for anyone right now. They couldn’t insure that tour during the pandemic. That said, I’d love a new album from the band.

Christine...cant play or sing anymore.
She had a couple of great solos on the last tour. Her voice is shot, but the same is true of Lindsey and Stevie. I’d rather have Christine with a shot voice than no Christine. They sound old because they are old.

It's not the same without LB.
I believe that was the point. They wanted something different.

The thought of hearing a nasal uninspired Rhiannon for the 100th time is not appealing.
Okay, but it hasn’t been inspiring since like 1982. With or without Lindsey.

Stevie doesn't take ANY chances anymore. NONE.
She sang a Peter Green song and turned one of Christine’s “Time” songs into a duet on the last tour.

Lindsey is the only one left in the band with an ounce of artistic credibility.
Which is why they got Neil Finn and Mike Campbell.

It’s a carryover from Stevie’s solo version.

Really, “Rhiannon” got neutered in the mid ‘80s and “The Chain” got neutered on The Dance. Those were the two most explosive songs. They’ve been bland for decades, now.

except when Lindsey performs them with other bands and not the neuterers. just watch 2 different versions of the Chain he has done with Little Big Time - acoustic backstage version and then on stage version too. now those are what you would call explosive! he needs someone way better and more inspiring than the competitive jealous neutering band FM had become decades ago.

Really? That was just as bland. Look at any of the ‘77-‘82 versions of “The Chain” and tell me with a straight face that remotely compares. There’s no slight buildup during the bass solo and it just abruptly ends without the explosive solo at the end. It was every bit as neutered.

Too bad Stevie is not taking this time to record. The last thing she needs is to try another solo tour of oldies. Make another album, girl, keep your fans alive and firm up your legacy. It took just a few weeks to put together 24KG, do that again.

I do realize that. However, even though it's not explosive; Christine plays a beautiful piano. Silver Springs was gorgeous and somewhat explosive on that tour. You're right though, I wouldn't compare that to 1982 which was electrifying. That (Dance) was the beginning of "watered down versions" especially of Stevie's songs. I did enjoy NTF on the Dance tour.

nah it started long before The Dance (1997)

Ive been listening again recently to her Bella Donna tour concert (1981) and was reminded how much Rhiannon even then had already become very tame and middle-aged. No spark at all; all canned. Yes, I know that wasn't FM, but it's her song and she could have done it anyway she wished without the burden of FM, and she went with a watered down version that really isn't that different to The Dance version. Things spiced up a bit as the coke habit grew more intense, but she had already lost her ability to do Rhiannon as originally done (without mountains of coke) by the early 80s. Even Dreams had grown lame by then too.

i'm pointing out that the 2 LB/LBT versions of the Chain - backstage acoustic and then live one - are fantastic.

as a response to that you keep saying but but but but but....... there are different wilder better versions out there, by the classic Mac themselves, when they were young, high and free from any scripts. nobody is arguing that or trying to compare all those versions but you. and you are doing that because you cannot argue that LB/LBT version is not fantastic. :)

I just think the band really went wild with it in 1982. And she was definitely completely insane and amazing for that whole show. IMO. Gypsy is the clunker, but it always is.

The live versions of all songs were changed during the Dance era. I would not call it "watering" down although I can see why someone would say that. Fleetwood Mac like bands in the late 90s used technology that helped them create a live sound much more similar to the album versions. Stevie's Stop Draggin My Heart Around in 2017 had very little rock edge compared to her early 80's versions. Over My Head used to rock in the 70s when they played it. When the Mac started playing it again in the late 90s, that arena rock sound was gone and we got something similar to the album version.

I have always said I loved arena rock and 1990 was the last of it with the Mac as well as other bands. I much prefer the raw rocking sound compared to the tame technology based sound.

I love the Live album version of OMH. That "drop D" guitar intro is f*cking awesome!

Both of those versions were fabulous. The LBT collaboration also couldn't be as long bc of television but it was electric! They blended one of LBT's songs with The Chain. The crowd went wild and LBT was clearly thrilled to be performing with Lindsey.
I hate how The Chain was played on the Evening with Fleetwood Mac In Concert Tour. I saw 3 shows.
Mike's solo sounded like a high school battle of the bands. Also Neil had no captivating stage activity. He jumped around. So does Nils Lofgren. He got up on Mick's drum platform which was a copy of Lindsey, except he didn't play the cymbals. Maybe Neil didn't crank it up bc they're not his songs.
When I saw them do his song I Got You, he did this weird tag game with Stevie and I couldn't wait for the song to end.

Some folks on this platform think they're the be all and end all of everything FM. Send in your application to Stubner and sheryl louis already, right?

yeah on other forums i saw a number of posts from Neil Finn fans who hated his turn with FM, felt he was muzzled and not anything like what they love about him live, and they couldn't wait for him to go on the road on his own terms. i was looking forward to I Got You and like you said, it was totally butchered. Neil's turn with Mac definitely soured CH and SE for a good number of people. hope the money and a few more people hearing his name was worth it to him.

haha re some folks offering themselves up for jobs in mac PR. i had the same thought reading some of those posts, especially when someone is twisting themselves into pretzels and throwing away any shreds of credibility trying to prove something they cannot really believe to be true.

This has got to be one of the most humiliating moments in Fleetwood Mac 's long and at times sordid history. Right up there with the incident in 1974 when their former manager toured another fake version of Fleetwood Mac.

I was way too young to understand any of this at the time, but clearly something happened during the 80's because a lot of bands made this pivot at the time. I'm a pretty big Stones fan and the concert approach from 1981/82 as compared to their 1989-90 tours are indescribably different. They added a mini-band behind them and approached their catalog with the intent to mimic as best as possible, the sound of the album recording. Stones fans lament the change to the "Vegas-era" of the Stones in 1989 as compared to their live approach from 1969-82.

My take has been that the bands were older, the audience was older, there were less drugs and the ticket prices were much much higher. Middle-aged (and now senior citizen) baby boomers had, and were willing to shell out, larger dollars to see their heroes and relive a piece of their youth for one night...but were going to be a lot more critical of bands playing loose with the live performances. I don't know if I'm right at all, but just a theory I have had on it.

Personally, as someone who was born two months after those last Tusk shows at the Hollywood Bowl, it's a hell of a lot more interesting today listening to bootlegs off of the Tusk Tour with their varied approaches and outputs vs. any bootleg off of the Say You Will or On With the Show Tours with their standardized, sanitized, and consistent performances. Of course, the band isn't really going to a give a crap about me listening on YouTube vs. the paying audience getting their one night at the local hockey rink with their favorite band sounding "just like they did 40 years ago!"

Compare Over My Head from Live to the performance on The Dance DVD. Blah to the latter.

You had the Stones sounding more like they were in a recording studio on the Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle Tour than on a stage. I will say, I think they really let loose on the Bigger Bang Tour and even some on the 50 & Counting Tour. I was at the show where they debuted Emotional Rescue and it sounded so FRESH.

Bekka was f*cking AWESOME. When she did Dreaming the Dream, she officially won me over. It's a god damned shame this lineup wasn't given more of a chance. She had the best, most powerful pipes of ANY singer FM ever had. And she still does!

Rhiannon will never be as great as it was from 1975 -1980. Some of the 1982 performances were still inspiring and I have been to an enormous amount of Live Stevie shows over the years. There were some live Rhiannon's this century that brought me back to the 70's for a few seconds here and there in these live performances. But that was usually found in her twirls.

Of course, the band isn't really going to a give a crap about me listening on YouTube vs. the paying audience getting their one night at the local hockey rink with their favorite band sounding "just like they did 40 years ago!"

I love everything you wrote. Fleetwood Mac changed dramatically after Lindsey left in 1987. Stevie took over the band and had a good chunk of her solo touring band onstage with FM. This is when everything began to sound just like the records. Oh how I miss the live sound created by just 4 people(Mick, John, Lindsey & Christine) and of course SN's vocals. But just FOUR people created an incredible live sound that made those shows from the White Album to Tusk so memorable for me. A lot of you guys became fans after the release of The Dance. For me at that time (1997) there was nothing in their live performance that could duplicate the magic of the 1970's except Silver Springs. That SS was filled with raw emotion.

I'm in agreement that I think with people willing to pay the premium prices for shows, the live experience changed.
Totally with you on the mini band too. I think in 89 they added Lisa, Bernard, Chuck. Now, I think they added more horns and they actually have 2 keyboard players. Maybe that was just to play She's a Rainbow:D

That’s just it - not to take this all Rolling Stones, but I think songs like Rainbow or Ruby Tuesday were only unearthed after ‘89 because of the “new” approach.

Bottom line is, everyone got older, the money got way more intense, and expectations changed. And with that came the doldrums that are Rhiannon since 1997 (piano intro as an exception), truncated blah versions of The Chain, and basic studio recreations that lack any oomph like Over My Head.

I think there was still some fire for The Dance. Silver Springs is something to behold and it just came off right. I also think they took SOME risks with the arrangements. Silver Springs for one, Landslide with just Lindsey and Stevie (no keyboard solo), Say You Love Me, the piano intro for Rhiannon (a first in the band setting and it didn’t drone on like some of her solo performances of it prior to 1997), and Farmers Daughter pulled out to close each show. I think the problem is for the most part, they created a formula that they never changed from during the Dance. Some subtle setlist changes and some minimal arrangement choices. The sound has more or less been steady since then. The only real difference is less playing by Lindsey and Chris, lowered keys, and worse voices from all of them.

Oh - and my biggest gripe with 1987+ Fleetwood Mac, those damned background singers. I know the sound needs to be filled out but I’ve always thought Stevie’s “girls” have overtaken her solo and band performances.

I'll bet even if John and Chris died, $tevie and Dick would keep on keepin' on.

well, she could always ask Benmont to join the touring band. One step closer to being in the Hearbreakers, and hey, he knows all her solo songs.

[/I]=elle;1259368]you know, personally and as you are all well aware i really could care less for Nicks or her airy fairy thoughts - but i think in her own way she is doing a good thing here with her PSA efforts. every little bit can help.

You are right, of course. Whenever these people do it, be it Taylor Swift or Stevie Nicks I cheer them because it may influence their fans.

But considering what happened to Lindsey, the idea of her saying she could lose HER voice as a way of scaring people into reality made me grunt, groan, growl ... well a sound emitted from my throat. I haven’t quite been able to categorize it yet.

I still want to know...did they just forget about the killer guitar solo during Rhiannon and Sisters of The Moon? In the case of Rhiannon, did it get cut because of the new piano intro in 97 and every tour rehearsal since it just fell under the radar?

I've always wondered how much the removal of those solos was purposeful or just somehow forgotten.

Yes! Instead of "tell me about what it was like breaking up and being in the same band!!!" questions, I'd rather we sat down and understood arrangements and changes over the years to their live show. With Rhiannon, that original 1975 arrangement with the solo, then the jam, then the "all the same"...then the final solo....it sort of died during the post-Lindsey years. In 1987, the few times they played Rhiannon, there was a solo before the "dreams unwind" part but by 1990 it was gone. Aside from the piano intro, the 1997-current arrangement of Rhiannon has pretty much stayed true to what was played in 1990.

Sisters was totally a victim of 31 years of inactivity. I doubt very much they went back to the 1982 shows or anything from Tusk when relearning the song. My guess is they played the studio track and tried their best to recreate that. In no way was Stevie EVER going to be able to carry the studio "to meeeeeeeeeeee" in 2013 so while 'her girls' did there wooooowoooo parts she chanted "sistahhhh" which was mediocre, but not awful. I didn't hate 2013-15 Sisters as much as most seem to but it sure as hell wasn't anything on 1978-82. I thought Christine added something when she returned on the keyboards that was missing during the 2013 tour.

The Chain was totally neutered in 1997 and the arrangement has not changed since. I think also they were at a time trying to fit more songs into the show, so the solos had to be removed or shortened. Meanwhile, we had to endure 12 minutes of the Gold Dust Woman crackhead dance and Mick's stupid drum solo. As for what they did in 2018 when the set dropped to what, 18-19 songs....no excuses.

Side note - the tight 5.5 minute version of Gold Dust Woman in 1997 is one of my favorites. I don't need the extra fluff that they later added on that one.

Sorry guys if this sounds sarcastic, but after five pages in this thread, narcissism or not, one can imagine that Stevie Nicks somehow still rocks  . As Oscar Wilde said, "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."

David

yeah on other forums i saw a number of posts from Neil Finn fans who hated his turn with FM, felt he was muzzled and not anything like what they love about him live, and they couldn't wait for him to go on the road on his own terms.
Reminds me of my reaction to Rick Vito. I didn’t think anything he did with Fleetwood Mac from 1987 to 1990 was all that terrific—except for one single plaintive little number called “I Loved Another Woman,” where the Fleetwood Mac contraption was shut down for three or four minutes and let this one guy sing from his guts. But that was it—three minutes in the whole show that were believable as an expression of musical emotion.

However, when I later saw Rick play guitar and sing, first for Bonnie Raitt and second for Stevie Nicks, it was like night and day. He was so much studlier as a guitar player with those two acts than he had ever been in Fleetwood Mac. He took control of the songs for Bonnie and Stevie and opened them up like a sports car on an empty highway. In Fleetwood Mac, he was just driving the limousine.

I think all of that came into play—the “philosophy” of live music changed in the industry. In the sixties and seventies, bands just drank a bottle of tequila and wailed. Whatever came out of the amp is what the show was. It was loose enough (and the musicians were still young enough) that inspired bits had plenty of room to surface. You attack your instrument (and your set list) very differently when you’re 28 and again when you’re 48 or 58. Rock concerts were bigger business and ticket prices were higher, so all the business people want you to be immaculate. If you had said to a psychedelic sixties band like Vanilla Fudge or to any number of hard-rocking seventies bands, “Be immaculate,” you would have been laughed out of the room. But it became the rule in the eighties.

Another thing that pushed things in a new direction—I think—is the transformation of the technology of live music. In a nutshell, you went from electric and electronic in the seventies: analog synths, tube technology, vocoders, wah pedals, two-channel stereo for keyboards (like Christine’s own late-seventies board, the Yamaha CP30), manual samplers like the Mellotron (which used Cr02 tape), and all the fun stuff musicians screwed around with in the studio and onstage (usually they played shows with the same instruments they were using in studios). In the early eighties, what changed? The digital revolution and an initial turn away from vintage sound. It’s funny but digital technology down the line was actually used to replicate vintage sound. This revolution in the size and sound of microprocessors really influenced what all these bands sounded like in concert. The technology in recording has always been great because it eliminated leakage without having to put everyone in separate rooms. But in a live setting, you look for a kinetic strength that the vintage approach was so great at capturing.

And let’s face it: drugs, too.

except when Lindsey performs them with other bands and not the neuterers. just watch 2 different versions of the Chain he has done with Little Big Time - acoustic backstage version and then on stage version too. now those are what you would call explosive! he needs someone way better and more inspiring than the competitive jealous neutering band FM had become decades ago.

Holy cannoli! I just pulled this up and listened to it, and it was killer! I wish Lindsey would do something like Ringo Starr does and get a little 'all star band' together and go around doing shows. OTOH, didn’t have to sit through REO.

It would be different if there had been something new from the band. But the last show of that tour was Aug. 31, 1995, the album was released on Oct. 10, 1995, and the only show they did after the album’s release was a corporate gig in Vegas on Nov. 15, 1995.
