View Full Version : The death of Stevies fandom

No new posts. No replies nobody logged in. 20 years ago this place was a community. Now, her lack of creativity, selling out her band, and self absorption has turned everyone away. What a sad way to go out. Instead of retiring like Grace Slick or gracious and productive like Loretta Lynn, Stevie turned into a shell of her former glory.

This board has definitely died a slow death. Being a longtime member I too remember the good old days when this board was on fire. Great conversations, memories shared, photos, rare mp3’s... it was a great source. I wonder though... is it that many of the former participants just do not use forums anymore. Twitter and instagram have taken over as the go to source. The die hard Stevie fans are still attending the shows. Recent ticket sales were good. Regardless of the drama on this board regarding peopleÂ’s perception of Stevie, she still has a following.

I wonder how many of the fans from this board are still alive? A lot of the people who posted here were in their 40s and 50s back in the heyday. That would make them 60- 70 now. Good chance many of them are gone.

I am surprised that Stevie is still rocking at 70+. I had always thought she would pursue other things...take time to create other hobbies & live a life outside the arenas and hotels. She has had no other focus except this career. (Amazing career of course, but it is the only chapter in her life, the same year after year, and she lives it over and over and over again) Its like the movie Groundhog Day.
I have to wonder what is the driving force that keeps her in this state of perpetual repeat. It’s much deeper than money or ego.

Possibly folks just left the Ledge, but continue to be fans? Idk.

I can't speak for everyone else obviously, but for myself, I have not remotely been turned away from her fandom. I don't discuss it much on the Ledge because it doesn't feel like a place for Stevie fans anymore. I still buy all her releases, collect when I can, and will see her live as much as I can, and still consider myself as much a fan as ever.

I just can't stand anything about the band now. There was a lot to criticize before, but I loved them and supported them in all their endeavors. The shows were getting a little lame and played out, but I still never dreamed of missing one, and that almost always meant travelling 4 or 5 hours, getting a hotel room, and paying at least 250.00 for a ticket. Now, I wouldn't go to their show if it were free. The whole thing feels creepy, gross, and uncool. Lindsey is out of the band, and you're dragging around a couple of guys from other bands? It's the antithesis of rock and roll. It's tragic, and it makes me sick. I won't support the band OR Stevie anymore. I excused a lot because of everything they've meant to me over the years, but now Stevie looks like a silly, geriatric fooI lumbering around on stage and phoning in every performance. Most of what she does is cringe-worthy. It doesn't matter though because you're right--they still have a huge following, which is mind-blowing to me.

I'd say it might be more about the death of the Ledge. As someone else said, tickets are selling just fine and there is plenty of activity in other Stevie/Fleetwood Mac forums. I only occasionally check back in here because it became such a miserable place with a half dozen or so people dominating discourse with the same angry tirade over and over again. I think a lot of people gave up and left to find places to talk about something else. Also, as was said by an earlier poster, people just naturally age out of the equation. Could be some of that going on. At any rate, its a big internet out there and you don't have to go too far to find current conversations.

This pretty much sums up exactly the way I feel as well. I loved Stevie so much, for decades, and loved the band with all my heart. I have never been so disappointed in people.
My heart breaks for Lindsey, how cruel they have been.

This board started to fracture once Stevie pulled her power trip, and people lined up in different camps. Instead of respecting each other's points of views, many (but not all) of the ones who continued to support the band didn't feel the need to be patient and understanding of the ones who were devastated by the move. Nothing is more dismissive or cruel than being told your point of view is pointless, worthless or stupid, and to "get over it."

As for the gobs of people that still pay to see them, I don't get it, and have given up trying to figure it out. I don't follow what I used to call "My Band" anymore.

I always considered myself a die-hard and stuck with Stevie and the band all the way back to the Rock a Little debacle through Behind the Mask and even Time up to the Dance. The Dance felt special like the flames had been rekindled only to have Christine leave and no new music for 6 frikken years. I was excited about In Your Dreams and 24 K and felt she was tapping into the artists she once was. Only to lead to this. If she's lost me, she can lose anyone because I was a total chiffon head, not anymore. I loved Buck McVie and was totally cheesed she chose to snub the last chance for one more great album. I also don't like at all how Christine has handled this- having so much fun, are you kidding me?

Curiosity keeps me checking the boards and really is more of a morning routine.

I could care less about the new line up and did not shell out thousands to see the "cover band". Stevie is nothing more than a parody of her former self, she looks ridiculous with the long hair at 71 and seems to never change her clothese, she was right when she belted "all the same" how prophetic. There are many tribute acts performing light years around the actual band now and many new artists with way more talent who deserve the attention and the $$. I really hope they pack it in and stop milking the Rumours cow from yesteryear.

I think your right , I still check what’s going on , but its become so boring reading the same, day in day out....from the usual suspects, same anger about yes, what was a despicable thing to do (the sacking of Lindsey)....but time moves on and the Ledge hasn’t ..
It’s a sparse place these days, and the usual suspects got the Ledge they deserve...
Yes we know Mick and Stevie orchestrated a bad bad bad thing...and we know in their eyes Mick and Stevie are scumbags...god they’ve told us enough times.
I’m not a great Stevie fan myself, these days but enough is enough.

I’m not a great Stevie fan myself, these days but enough is enough. The energy here comes in spurts. Months might be kind of dry, and then something will happen — her hall of fame induction, a new article, a new old anthology — and the fun fights start all over again. The Ledge is like calling your old friend: in high school, you talked on the phone every day; in college, you talked every week; now you talk every couple of months (or a few times a year) because life.

Stevie is still fun to talk about, whether it’s about what she’s doing (or not doing) now or about thirty years ago. One of my favorite things to do here is contribute to a very old thread that someone revived. It was so long ago that reading old threads is like reading old email (we’ve started passing around old email at work, too).

I wish Stevie could still sing. But at least she can still be — know what I mean?

Incidentally, is there something broken with the way the Stevie part of the forum displays? For instance, I started a thread here about Stevie's 9/11 documentary recommendation in September and it has fallen off the list, while some of the other sections of the forum still show threads available going back to January which obviously haven't had any activity for many months.

Don’t get me wrong, David, I still love all the old Stevie stuff, I still play all the old Albums..
I even like “Say you will”...one of my favourite LP’s
I’m just not that keen on the current state of Fleetwood Mac.

She did it to herself. She stopped a Fleetwood Mac album with all three songwriters from happening. She got the main creative force kicked out of the band over nothing. She wanted her own band and Tom Petty wasn’t dead that long before she snagged Michael Campbell. She is a selfish person. Always has been. She ruined the final years of the band. The people on the ledge who are still here for the most part are Stevie fans and sooo you are not going to get much honesty out of them. Posts dropped significantly after she decided not to do a final album with Chris and Lindsey and they nose-dived further after she got Lindsey kicked out. She left Fleetwood Mac fans with no hope.

And it is a joke that her and Mick run the band. The two coke heads who put the band through hell end up with all the glory. It’s too hard for many fans to take.

I check in every morning. Sometimes the site isn't up though. I have been a die hard Stevie/Mac fan since 1975. I have followed their lives obsessively forever. The last few years really disappointed me. Stevie not wanting to record when Chris came back was the start. The finish was what happened to Lindsey. I still can't believe I didn't see them on this tour, but I did watch the videos. I'm very disappointed in Stevie. Living in the past, on stage. I was embarrassed by her Rock n Roll hall of fame speech. She couldn't even properly thank anyone, it was all about her stories we've heard before. It's very sad really. I still follow, but now's it a habit, not really caring as much as I used too.

Yes--the RRHOF speech was embarrassing to watch. It would have been such a proud day for most of us, but I really didn't even care because of what had preceded it. And all that tripe about not listening to women was stupid but very revealing. The speech sounded unprepared and silly. In the past, I would have circulated it on my social media, but I was too disappointed in her behaviour with Lindsey, AND she looked like a self-indulgent fool rambling on like she did. "If you are GRACIOUS, you have won the game"? Okay.

Yeah, it's really just the death of the Stevie Ledge board. For me, the invective, knee-jerk hatred, and name-calling has really ruined the Ledge experience. Stevie is by no means a saint (nor are any of us), but Ledgies' inability to engage in respectful dialogue has made it hard for me to muster the energy to post here with any frequency. :sorry:

That said, can't wait for her rumored next tour, and I remain hopeful for another album. When either or both happens, I'll be in back here, with hopes of engaging in friendly conversation/debate. ;)

She's always been a rambler. She reminds me of my batty aunt. Usually I find it endearing, but the RRHOF and the Musicare's speeches were cringeworthy.
I saw 24KG 4 times. This last FM tour was the 1st one I've missed since the Dance. I saw LB's solo tour last year--he was as energetic and joyful as always. I loved it. I am torn as to what I will do if Stevie actually solo tours again.
I miss this band. Like another poster said, I used to call them "my band". It saddens me that this is how they will likely end.

I miss the band, too. I also miss coming to The Ledge and reading and writing about FM. There are so many times that I've come to The Ledge for advice about tickets, to read and write reviews of shows, to admire Ledgies whose encyclopedic knowledge of the band and its members is astonishing and a revelation, or just to celebrate these five people who were such significant figures in our lives. I saw 24KG in the theatre, and I, too, have watched it many times; I saw LB's show, bought the BuckVie album, and have supported the band in every way for decades. I believe with all my heart that Stevie was determined to drag MC around, and I only wish she had done this on her solo tours. Waddy would probably have been fine with it, where, of course, she knew LB would not. I think a lot of the vitriol here comes from the fact that many of us are stunned and HURT by the heartlessness of what was done to Lindsey, and then, when he was hospitalized last year, that was the straw that broke the camel's back. As much as I miss them, I just can't even look at them anymore. :( Sad, indeed.

I don't think Mike would have had any interest or motivation to be in Stevie's solo band prior to Tom's death. Why go from being a member of a major group to being a backup player? I am not sure he'd even agree to be part of her band now because no matter how they billed it, he'd just be her back up player. (He might to the odd show with her here and there maybe but not full time). But being part of FM is much bigger, it makes him once again the lead guitarist in another major band. Whereas Waddy's career has been as a studio player and backup to famous front-people.

Why would Lindsey care who she had in her back up band? I don't think she gave any thought to LB's opinions when forming her own bands.

This. Stevie could walk down fifth avenue shooting orphaned cancer patients in the stomach (ensuring they die slowly & painfully), yet she wouldn’t any of her sycophantic fans. They’d find a way to blame it on Lindsey for suggesting Stevie match her verb tenses that one time 20 years ago. :p

The funny thing is, I was a rabid Stevie fan for 2 decades. Her slow destruction of FM & her own dignity drove me away, unfortunately. But that’s okay. She gets the last laugh!

The nastiness drove me away. The Ledge moderators/owners are responsible for the decline. They allow the same ones to beat a dead horse over and over again with no consequences, yet someone can say something that disagrees with the hatred and they get banned. I can find my FM/Stevie news elsewhere and yes I still buy all the releases and go to the concerts. It's a shame because this used to be my favorite website.

I couldn’t agree more. I came to ledge in 1997. I now come to the ledge do to habit. It use to be a great place to visit and share experiences and opinions. In the last couple of years it became very mean spirited and nasty. We all don’t like and agree on what went down in recent years and there is nothing wrong with voicing our thoughts but the nastiness is just plain rude and extremely immature. I’m really close to deleting this site from a daily go to place.

I am happy to see that there are a few people who have stayed and continue to try to have positive discussions. Yes, the bitter people will still troll the SN section but I think it will tone down.

There have been a few things that the band has done that has disappointed and disillusioned die hard fans over the years. The reality of who Stevie is vs what fans believed her to be can be eye opening. I remember in the 80’s when fans would meet her after shows and say “she wasn’t very nice...” or “wow she was not at all the sweet person I always thought she was”. They would walk away hurt and crying. It was sad to see. The people around her would stay...”Sometimes it is best to never meet your heroes”. I think many of the fans on this board may have come to the harsh reality that who they thought she was wasn’t all at who she really is. That is a hard pill to swallow.

Sorry to speak for Lulu here, but personally, though I appreciate what you are saying; it hasn't always been easy to do just that. There were countless times where someone would TRY to start a non-gripe thread, or join in on one and it would quickly get overwhelmed by that same handful of angry people interjecting completely non related nastiness over that same old subject. It didn't seem to matter what the subject of the new thread was. In the end, I think it was just easier to leave and join in with people in other forums who actually wanted to talk about other stuff.

Yes, an eventual mass exodus of the people who didn't care to discuss the Lindsey situation over and over and over for going on two years now. That little group of people who kept reminding us all how much they hate Mick and Stevie and how the band should just curl up and die now are still here and still telling us those same things. It is the people who are exhausted with it all that left for livelier forums where there are other things to talk about. Those people were not driven off because they were angry with Stevie. And now back I go to one of those forums to rejoin a pretty cool conversation with some nice people about things that are happening now.

To make the whole mechanism “work” — to make a fan group vibrant and breezily discursive — people do need to behave. We need to self-police. (It would be nice if we all checked our most psychotic impulses at the door.)

In the end, I think it was just easier to leave and join in with people in other forums who actually wanted to talk about other stuff.

They were angry with Stevie. What planet do you live on? She may not be able to do any wrong in your world, but she has in the real world. Her and Mick. Self absorbed people and it will never be forgotten. They ruined the final curtain of a great band.

I saw Bob Seger last night in Pittsburgh. I talked to the lady sitting behind me and she said Stevie Nicks was her girl and she wanted to see her concert. She missed her last time and I told her I thought she was touring next summer. Later another lady sitting beside her started talking to her and the conversation turned to their love for Stevie Nicks. So apparently there are still a lot of fans out there for her.

I have a Facebook group. We're still under one thousand members. I model it sorta after The Ledge. It's a group about Stevie but a sense of humor is welcome there. You don't have to worship her. I won't tell you what it's called without Michele's permission. But if she gives me the ok, all are welcome. I also allow pics to be posted about any of the FM band members and other band's too if that interests you.

Sure, give them the name. I think that’s great.

How kind of you. The group is called: Stevie Nicks Is In My Dreams

Anyone else think the record label/management might be a bit to blame? The Stand Back collection had songs labeled as single mixes that weren't single mixes and lots of confusion on which versions would be available physically. Where are the remasters of at least Rock A Little and OSOTM? Both Top 20 albums with lots of remixes and b-sides to choose from. Stevie may not want to record anymore but could easily release rare songs/remixes that are harder to find. I too am tired of the fighting and bickering but will never tire of the poetry in the lyrics that helped me throughout life.

We all have different degrees of anger. I don't mind the band bashing. At times it can be quite humorous. There once was a time I completely worshiped this band but then I grew up and saw them as people. Nothing is going to make me leave The Ledge. I love it here. No one ever gives me a hard time. I think most people know Stevie is my favorite. I will always go and see her live, whether that be in Fleetwood Mac or by herself. She has enhanced my life more than any other celebrity in the world. Whatever the year it is, when I am at the concert I always say to myself how lucky I am the performer I most loved when I was a teenager is standing in front of me right now. 43 years now!

(Personally don’t get it, but I got to see Christine McVie a few more times, so I’m good.)

Done with the woman, as I like my music springing from integrity and innovation. That's all.

I think she should stop touring for a bit and make some guest appearances on 90 Day Fiance. Imagine her haggling with Angela.

Peoples love for Steve he hasn’t changed one little iota. The nasty people on this board have driven away all Stevie fans with their disgusting behavior. They all know it. It was their goal to do so. They are bitter because they are just bitter people. Misery loves company. I left this board because it’s just ridiculous anymore. There are tons of other places to get information on what’s going on. This isn’t a Fleetwood Mac board anymore. It is a let’s cry about Lindsey Buckingham board. There is no ownership of his part in all this. It’s all blamed on Stevie and Mick Fleetwood. It’s laughable.
