Just to be clear this is 20th September, not 20th October.

Channel 4
Fleetwood Mac's Songbird: Christine McVie

Christine McVie is undoubtedly the longest-serving female band member of any of the enduring rock ‘n’ roll acts that emerged from the 1960s. While she has never fronted Fleetwood Mac, preferring to align herself with ‘the boys’ in the rhythm section whom she first joined 50 years ago, Christine is their most successful singer-songwriter. Her hits include ‘Over My Head’, ‘Don’t Stop’ and ‘Everywhere’.

After massive global success in both the late 1970s and mid-1980s, Christine left the band in the late 1990s, quitting California and living in semi-retirement in Kent, only to rejoin the band in 2014. In this 90-minute film, this most English of singers finally gets to take centre-stage and tell both her story and the saga of Fleetwood Mac from her point of view.

Director Matt O'Casey

I'm hoping there'll be more interviews than these listed. This must be the programme Richard Dashut was interviewed for- Surely he wasn't cut. It'll be interesting to hear from Stan Webb.

It's odd that two UK channels are holding Fleetwood Mac nights on the same day. These channels aren't linked in any way. I think the Christine McVie documentary is the only new programme.

Hi Fuzzy, you've put Channel 4 here, but I think you actually meant BBC4? We're both Brits, I think! :)

I'm looking forward to this, particularly regarding the early years. I suspect Mr B's defenestration will be artfully glossed over, but we shall see...

Yes, I'm a Welsh, Surrey dwelling Brit. Sorry, meant to put BBC 4, not Channel 4.
Hmm, as far as I can tell, there's no link between those two channels so it seems a really strange coincidence they'll both be putting on Fleetwood Mac themed nights.. It's almost as if some people somewhere are in the know about something.

Sorry to bang on and bore people but Fleetwood Mac are now among the strong favourites for headlining at Glasto next year. I was skeptical this would ever happen (especially with the current touring schedule coming to an end) but with the Classic East/West shows a couple of years ago they do have recent form when it comes to getting together for one off events (there was also the one-off benefit gig a few years back). The festival often announce one of their headline acts in the autumn. I wonder whether there might be an announcement pending, hence the reason for TV schedulers to have something set up ready to coincide. This could also add some context to the otherwise curious forthcoming release of a new Rumours deluxe package. If they do do Glastonbury it will be a very bitter-sweet feeling. I'll be excited to see how they go down but desperately sad the festival goers wont be getting the proper Fleetwood Mac treatment.

...or maybe I'm just reading too much into it.

The ..”Don’t stop” documentary on at 22:30, has been on loads of times.
I had it recorded at one time, it’s pretty good and interesting.

It is a basic history of the Mac since formation thro to 2009.
Worth watching if you’ve never seen it before...

I am THRILLED this documentary is going to see the light of day. So so so so sad that Lindsey is not listed. Even with his recent problems with the band, I'll bet he would have contributed. And it's a pity Bob Welch isn't here and that he and Christine were not on speaking terms when he was alive. I'm sure he would have offered a valuable perspective. What on earth can Mike Campbell and Neil Finn say that wouldn't be scripted or superficial?

Can you imagine a 90 documentary about Christine McVie without Lindsey's input???

The actually wrote the most songs together. They just recently made an album together. Their collaborations, in part, led to her return to the band/studio.

First impressions--

The first doc is a bunch of Brit performers narrating the story of FM with a series of the band's performance films and MTV videos, from the white album through Buckingham McVie.

The other band doc is an old one I've seen before.

The Profile of Christine one is great, it's a mix of old films and current interviews with everyone in the band, even John:eek: Great stuff from him we haven't heard before. I haven't had a chance to savor all of it but the first half hour or so and it's all sorts of people she played with and knew going back to the 60s. She and John in different clips tell how they met etc. Showing where they used to live. Films of her winning Melody Maker female singer of the year award in 1969....great stuff.

Benifolds......Bob Welch. Surprisingly good things to say about him. Oh, then she says the whole time he was in the band he was a "heroin junkie"

She's wearing her Stevie moon in diamonds, and this looks like many of her interview bits were recorded during that time where she had way too much filler in her face. But it's amazing to get a whole 90 min profile of her.

Interesting, they play quite a bit of the music of Stevie's piano demo for Planets. I wonder if they think it's Chris.....

The final straw with John was a night at the Gotham Hotel in NY where it got ugly and Chris felt basically in danger though they are all very delicate how they talk about it. :distress:

They all tried to hide Chris's relationship with Curry from John. But he figured it out. Curry got fired because John was mad about it.

the Dennis years.

The Tusk tour did them all in.

Oh, the infamous NZ incident. Stevie says when Lindsey wanted to get to her he would "go into his Rhiannon stance". Chris says she thought it was unprofessional and rude. Stevie says she would just give him a stare when he did it. One night he threw a guitar at her. She ducked because "I'm fast". Chris saw it. "I had it" and when they went offstage Stevie chased after him "but Chris got there first". Chris says she threw her glass of wine in his face and berated him and said "That's really professional" she thought that it was "rude"

Chris says "I'm the hook queen". I don't know any other way to write. Little Lies. Mike likes it.
Stevie say the barn in the video for that song had no door on the end, they were on the second story. "Lindsey would weirdly walk to the opening like he was going to go out of it. Very weird."

He tells them he's leaving even though tour booked. He was just stone faced. Stevie in "my tranquilized euphoria" chased after him. Chris chased after them saying "If you're going to kill each other please don't do it here" And Lindsey peeled out at like 90 mph

well it's hard to gauge because in some cases it was Stevie saying what Chris said at some time in the past and we all know that Stevie likes to embellish.

And curiously Chris couched several of her comments with sort-of disclaimers like "so I've been told" and "I believe" indicating she's taking other people's word for it.

So it does raise the question, was she fed some biased info when she got back? She knew how they were in the past so they told her it was the same while she was gone. Maybe in fact it was.
But what pisses me off no end is if it was all so awful, she and LB were tearing each other apart, why go so extreme in your marketing of yourselves with the hand holding and lovey dovey bullsh*t and all? Mick was all in on it too. Freaks.

Freaks.

So “she was told” and yet she chose to believe them and stayed on Stevie’s side. She’s no better than Stevie and Mick.

This is such BS garbage. If things were so bad for the past 15 plus years why did she (SN) stay? Why was nothing much said about this besides the usual fluff they said in press interviews?

I feel so bad for him and his family right now. He is trying to get better and all they can do is constantly get their digs in. I wonder if his wife will react on Social Media or not.

It is so obvious that the PR machine is working overtime to paint him as a this horrible human being and that he had to go. You know they are grasping at straws when they have to tout how many tickets they sold this year or how many T- Shirts they have moved. They sold a million tickets this year? Great but I am sure the last tour was just as successful if not more so.

I never thought I would say this but I hate them all. The way they have treated him this past year is beyond disgusting. They are bunch of gutless cowards. Things were so bad yet they couldn't tell him that in person but instead embarrass him on TV.

Money that's why. They all know the drama sells. Mick will do anything for it judging by how he goes along with anything as long as it makes him money.

Just as I thought the abuse garbage is rearing its head on social media. Instagram user named Stevienicksnation (not sure of the exact username) made a posy under the tusk tour video clip of him talking about the incident they bring up where he threw a guitar at SN on stage and then add why wasn't he fired then. I can only imagine what the Facebook groups are like.

it's been a goal of the chiffon cult, among others led by that teenager from England (with his stevienicksnation pages) for more than a year now. he's cutting out and highlighting parts that suit his narrative.

but actually this doc is very balanced and makes it very clear that what chiff cult has been pushing is a lie. if violent behavior is something that precludes people from being in today's version of FM, John would be the first one to be thrown out (i was actually surprised how much of his violent drunken behavior they aired, but i guess makes sense in doc about Christine), and Stevie would be thrown out together with Lindsey because the 2 of them were always fighting and screaming at each other. so much so that in 1987, Christine was yelling after them to get out of her house if they intend to kill each other.

It is so obvious that the PR machine is working overtime to paint him as a this horrible human being and that he had to go. You know they are grasping at straws

i read general people comments on twitter when this was airing. i think we are all very sensitive and read into every word or clip. in general, the doc makes it clear to a neutral observer that Stevie and Lindsey just didn't get along for decades and that was bringing bad blood when they were in the same room. any neutral observer would be left with the impression that they'd be just as happy (but less rich) if Stevie was thrown out. throughout the doc the 2 of them are made equally to blame.

of course, we know Lindsey was actually biting his tongue and willing to work it out for the band ("i will stand with my band") while Stevie has been thriving on drama and unhappiness (and some weird revenge for dumping him?) and still seems to be. she doesn't look happy at all.

Christine looks like she's trying too hard to justify to herself why she went with this betrayal of the person who she "loves to bits" and who is her "favorite person to work with" - she's doing it all oh so altruistically for the "pleasure" of the audiences, which in turns gives her "pleasure". she is trying too hard to appease Mick, Stevie, Managers - whoever is insisting on taking digs at Lindsey. having BuckVie clips in there and seeing clearly how happy, fulfilled, and relaxed they all were when Stevie was not around? makes the point all the more clear who is to blame for all the unhappiness going around.

I agree with everyone that it's all about money. No big surprise there.

Chris's comments, and frankly even Stevie's, are all about these two people attacking EACH OTHER. They use language like "Stevie and Lindsey battering each other" "Fighting like cat and dog" "If you two are going to kill each other"
It is presented like the aggressions are mutual.

The only circumstance they bring up that is clearly him attacking first is the onstage guitar throwing bit.

Yet we have this persistent narrative that it was all one-side LB against SN.

And yes, the John thing is an interesting comparative point. He was clearly physically aggressive to Chris. Perhaps the fact that John has always done a mea culpa about his drinking and owning up to being an a--hole (in the past he's often said things like "bless her heart she had enough and left"). Neither Stevie nor Lindsey has ever come clean about each of their contributions to their disastrous relationship. Stevie in fact has chosen to paint this rosy picture-- wasn't it in the early 2000s she was banging on about how they'd had all these deep talks and had come to understand each other's pain and etc better and now they got along so fabulously, wasn't it SHE who persisted in crafting this whole hand-holding, fall in love all over again sh&t onstage and in interviews for years and years??

Did anyone else who watched it pick up on Stevie's comments-- she was doing that whole thing about how early on she sat down with Chris and said they had to be formidable and never be treated as less-than by men in the business etc. I'll have to go back and watch again but she added on a sentence at the end pretty close to if these men "put us down or cross us, watch. out. "
And she says it totally stone faced. Message to LB??:distress:

i think she and Mick, both. she kept banging on about when Lindsey's kids grow up he'll have no reason to stay with his wife and will come back to her. i guess now when his kids did grow up and he's not coming back to her, and in fact stop appeasing her ego all together after Christine came back, she pulled the trigger. so Lindsey is guilty in appeasing Mick and Stevie and playing along with the "everlasting love" thing, maybe if he put a cut on it earlier Stevie would had less power to oust him. or she would try this ousting earlier.

John didn't do any more mea culpa than Lindsey did, so that excuse doesn't fly. Lindsey was asked several times about his temper in the past and he commented on it. but yes he didn't specifically blame drugs and alcohol.yet he clearly stopped drinking all together.

she comes across as such overly serious, vengeful, unhappy person.

on the other hand, Christine comes across as happy go lucky, i don't wanna know and i don't want to listen to my conscience person.

Chris: "The Chain is the five of us. The Rumours 5 (holding up 5 fingers). That's synonymous to what we're all about. And I was going to leave. That was a complete bust up of the Chain as far as I was concerned"

I keep thinking about this quote, and if she really thought the 5 of them were 'the chain' and one of them leaving (in this case her) was a 'complete bust up' of the chain, of the magical band

She clearly thinks that after she left it wasn't FM, it was really BN plus Mick and John on backup.

How does she then talk out the other side of her mouth and say how great it is to be back and to act like it's the same band??

She goes on several times about how she missed working with them, knew she wanted to come back and work with them again, even went into the studio expecting to do a whole new album with all of them until Stevie put the kibosh on that [notice they've finally given up the nonsense that it was never supposed to be a band album]
but she supposed there just wasn't any other solution.

....loved working with LB on it, he does magical things to her songs etc etc...never says anything about working on songs or singing or whatever with Stevie.

So it all just confirms the obvious - they did the math and calculated that it was better for business to keep her and not him.

she did come of as overly serious, almost emotionless, grim, rarely cracked a smile or was the smiley laughing Stevie...

it really seems from watching this that if they didn't break up after Rumours, they really ought to have pulled the plug after Tusk. But again, greed.

You know they can bitch about LB leaving and yeah ok the timing of it kinda sucked once a tour was booked, but it was one of the most honest things in the history of this band. They all talked about how awful the Tusk tour was, yet not one of them had the balls to say let's not keep doing this if it's so bad -- only Lindsey did. I give him a lot of credit for that. Miss I'm-being-abused-but-will-keep-staying-for-it-if-you-pay-me-enough didn't have the guts to just leave and she totally had plenty to fall back on with her solo career. So yeah, I'm not buying the victim thing once you had a whole other career you could have gone to and not put up with whatever you say you put up with in FM.

Christine comes across as a woman of a certain age, with experience and knowing, but not in a nasty way.

I wouldn’t want to cross either, but Stevie is scary.

the thing is - she never said this. she never said she was abused and always says - same as Christine - that the 2 of them were horrible to each other.

just the militant stevie cult keeps pushing the "she was abused" narrative as some kind of apologist excuse for her horrible behavior.

i stand corrected about the date this doc was filmed. Richard Dashut had a facebook post on May 20, 2019, that BBC was coming to his home that day to interview him for a doc about Christine.

so IF Lindsey was not interviewed because he couldn't talk or was recuperating at the time, saying that he is recuperating from a heart attack would have been hugely powerful. the fact that was not said speaks volumes about band's agenda.

I’m sure Lindsey wasn’t interviewed because he wasn’t asked and if he was he declined so he could wait for when he comes out with his new cd. My thought is that he is recovering and will use his “coming out” to spill his guts on his MAC departure while he promotes his new music. I remember him saying in an interview years back about this collection of music that it’s very “pop”........Fleetwood Macish?😎

What's the story with Stevie's teeth?

Sorry, I'm not an authority on Stevie Nick's teeth. I don't ever remember seeing her in 1970's footage with bad teeth. However, I think she was a bit 'gappy' in the 90's. I thought in the 00's and 10's her teeth were okay but then in that doc last night her teeth looked really f*@#ing awful....huge gaps.

Could somebody in the know please enlighten me?

thank you

yeah sorry, I should have put the word in quotation marks to indicate that I meant if she was supposedly 'abused'

What they actually had was a mutually co dependent relationship. Not as catchy apparently in the media.

She got caps or veneers somewhere after she started her solo career. You can see in early Mac pics for ex her two front teeth on top are rather large and slightly bucked out. Later you see she has all perfectly symmetrical, same sized teeth.

A lot of us noticed how lispy she was on her last solo album (with Dave S). She was very lispy in the CBS interview about the new lineup, and she was very lispy in this documentary as well.

Not sure if she got new/updated teeth, maybe she had some of the false veneers removed?? I couldn't see her top teeth in this one but her bottom ones looked either grungy or as you say gappy. Addicts aren't known for maintaining great personal hygiene; maybe she's got some residual tooth damage from that... though she typically goes all out with top notch cosmetic issues.

they made no attempt to indicate at all that there were two sides to the story. you know Stevie's never going to admit it.

Interestingly for once Mick said nothing about his departure at all. He's the one that's been pushed forward to say something about it in all the tour interviews.

there's just one side to the story, and Christine basically told it - Stevie and Lindsey cannot be in the same room without arguments. that's all.

and so Stevie used her position of power to oust him. just like Lindsey said. and band just laid down and went with the company line. and now they are trying to justify it - Mick by lying about "the band" not being "happy" (who tf cares whether YOU are happy Mick??), and Christine by justifying that she went with it because oh so many people get "pleasure" from seeing the crippled band and apparently she gets pleasure from seeing reviewers bang on her signing while praising stevie's.

Could somebody in the know please enlighten me?

thank you

If it’s the bottom teeth that someone said are looking “gappy”, that’s common with a smoker. The tissue recedes as the bone recedes and your teeth look longer and have more space between. I haven’t seen the video, but my guess is that’s what happened to her bottom ones.
The top ones may have been redone by someone a little over zealous, or as per the Queens instructions. And that definitely can affect speech.

Benifolds......Bob Welch. Surprisingly good things to say about him. Oh, then she says the whole time he was in the band he was a "heroin junkie"

Oh my goodness. If Wendy were still alive she would spontaneously combust in flames. Michele

Chris explains that Over My Head was inspired by Lindsey. "I don't think he ever knew that, but-- he knows NOW!" and she points at the camera and laughs.

Nancy Wilson from Heart comments about how great a song it is.

We knew it, so he probably knew already.

Stevie says when FM goes offstage they all go their separate ways and don't talk. except her and Chris of course, they talk. Then after about a year the managers start calling them and they get ready to go do an album (Mirage)

I just can’t see her talking to Chris when they aren’t working. Mick, but not Chris.

No one was talking doing that video. The director says cranky band and lots of alcohol and 105 degrees. John drunk tried to punch out director. They ordered a giant penis cake for Mick's birthday which he cut with a sword. Stevie was diva and insisted on wearing her heels in the sand.

The hills in the sand were a beautiful touch though. The director should’ve kissed her for that idea.

Stevie shows off diamond ring Chris gave her before she left. She wore it every day for the next 16 years to feel like Chris was there.

Yeah, I don’t think she wore it every day for 16 years.

So it all just confirms the obvious - they did the math and calculated that it was better for business to keep her and not him.

Look, if you have to take sides, why not take the side of the person who sells the most tickets, rather than the side of the person who worked tirelessly to make your songs iconic. No brainer.

Yep... the very songs that everyone buying a ticket to a show is paying to hear. The songs they never would have known if not for your gorgeous production getting them on the radio. smh

Are you saying that Stevie would LIE???

Say it ain't so!!! She's DELUSIONAL. I wouldn't believe a word that comes out of her mouth. I truly believe that she believes her own lines of CRAP.

I have to confess I'm eager to hear her bunch of lies about Lindsey's firing, once this tour is over. Or if he ever decides to come clean.

Let's face it: this is more than just an old woman being delusional. And everyone around her know it, but they just go with the flow because she means money, and Lindsey doesn't.

Half of what Christine said are fabricated lies. She doesn't strike me as the kind of person who could be friends with Stevie. She can tolerate her, but friends? She's friends with Jenny Boyd, not Stevie.

But now they're all of a sudden "Sisters of the Moon"..... right….:laugh:

some of the smaller details in the documentary that were interesting..

Neil and Chris have been working together on at least one song so far. Where will it go? FM album? Neil Finn album? Another Chris solo album (seems least likely option)? Sit on a shelf never to be heard?

She mentioned falling and hurting her hip. Wonder if that's what LB was referring to when saying Chris was "fragile"? Maybe it bothers her onstage for couple hours every night for months on end??? She certainly seemed healthy and happy and fine and active in the BuckVie shows...

I'm still bothered by Stevie's comment about people who cross her should "watch.out" Just felt like a coded message to LB-- not that she's gonna come after him but that he crossed her one too many times and look what happened. See? Cross me and I *will* get my way, however long it takes -- that kind of thing.

Why is Mick always so obsessed with penises and balls? It's so far into the realms of an unhealthy obsession it's gross.

We see how close John and Chris still are and the esteem he holds her in by not only him appearing in this a fair amount but how much more verbal he is (for him) than he typically is in interviews. He seems to open up more than usual talking about her.

I do wonder if anyone other than Chris was asked about the LB debacle. Odd for Mick not to have commented since he's been the spokesman for it all this time. Willing to bet it was off.the.table. for asking Stevie.

The Hold Me director stated that Chris was like the mother and that all the bad behavior of everyone else "it was like she'd dealt with it all before" and she was the one who tried to rise above all that.

She really doesn't pick great partners in her personal life. Fun guys but not reliable or faithful or nice to her often. :(

Stevie keeps making it like they were besties, when Chris talks about their relationship like a work friendship.

Unless she was brainwashed by Mick and Stevie, I can't see why she needed not only to give him the cold shoulder and be on their side but also to mention how HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY she is now that he's gone. And how he kinda deserved what happened to him, how he was ousted, because you don't mess with Stevie.

She was never my heroine and all I know is that they all hurt him just the same. And they keep on doing it.

She was never my heroine but I always felt she was above the petty crap of Stevie, Mick, and for that matter, Lindsey. Her decision to go along with this farce after recording and touring with Lindsey just a few months earlier has totally soured me on her (maybe as you said, a half notch above the other two).

The way they screwed Lindsey is still appalling to me. Stevie wouldn’t have ever been in the band without him. And there would not have been a Fleetwood Mac for Christine to come back to in 2014 if Lindsey had also decided to bolt after The Dance. At least not one that has made the kind of money over the last 5 years for Chris.

I rewatched the doc again. Lindsey does actually have a brief speaking part in it-- when talking about the story of how Mick asked them to join, they cut to a clip of Lindsey telling the story of Mick hearing a clip from 'an album we had done about a year before' It appears to be a clip from pre-Rumours.

Christine says about Over My Head and being inspired by LB: "he was that kind of a guy. He could be cold as ice. And then he could be great. Uh, so I think I just took that feeling I was feeling and made it into a song"

Yes, she had the power to stop it. Christine could’ve said she’s not touring and Stevie would’ve huffed and puffed for about a year and then she would’ve given in. And, if Christine had taken a stand, I half think that John would’ve sided with her and not with Mick and Stevie. I know what it is like to be reluctant to do something, to be cowardly, but it would’ve been harder for me to stab Lindsey in the back than it would’ve been to draw Mick and Stevie’s ire. Although, if I ignored Lindsey’s phone calls and emails and just ghosted him and never had to look into his eyes and confront my guilt, I guess that would’ve made it easier.

It still irks me that they insist it “had to happen” No, actually it didn’t. Any other group of rational adults would of said “it’s not a good year for Stevie and Lindsey, let’s regroup in 6 months”

Instead, like clockwork, the three year Fleetwood Mac timer was going off and Stevie wanted her payday in any shape or form she could get it.

All over a dumb greatest hits tour where the headlines would all be about a Tom petty or crowded house song, not even a Fleetwood Mac song. How sad is that.

THAT is what really, really bugs me. You don't act that way, like a cold b*tch, with someone you supposedly love.

She has to follow Stevie and Mick's "orders"? Fine. She has to promote the new guys in the band? Fine. But who was preventing her from answering his e-mails and phone calls, especially after his heart attack? There's NO excuse for her pathetic behavior. No excuse.

And her "unnecesary" happy, happy comments? Yeah, twist the knife a bit more, Christine. Because he's not hurt enough.

But Don't dream it's over is one of the "greatest love song of all time", according to Queen Stevie. Yeah, I bet she didn't even know the lyrics before Mick brought Finn into the band.:rolleyes:

This was the final straw for me with Chris.

I was completely willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. Maybe because she emailed him as he said, maybe because I wanted at least 1 of them to have some morals or good graces.

Then he hears nothing from any of them....so WHY, FOR GODS SAKE DO YOU NOT REACH OUT TO HIM AFTER HIS HEALTH ISSUE?????????????????????????????

Come on Chris, that sucks the big one. You have no credibility or respect left in my eyes.

Which makes me incredibly sad that they all are such a**holes. One thing I keep thinking back to is: Kristen Buckingham spoke the truth.

The beginning of the end for me was finding out that she is the one who kept Bob Welch out of the R&RHOF. I did my best to (halfway) forgive her for that(you know, after loving her for FORTY years and all).

But this was the final straw for me. She's really no better and old Dick face or the goat.

If you stand by and watch somebody get raped or murdered, without even attempting to help, you ARE complicit!!!!! She and John are just as guilty as the two premium douchebags.

And especially not reaching out after the heart attack. SOULLESS.

Kristen is the best thing that ever happened to him. I pray that under no circumstances would/could/should he ever go back. F*ck them.

I have always wondered about the RRHOF story. Why would CM care that Bob's Lp sold more then hers? By 84 Bob couldn't get arrested as a singer while she was still going strong. Either way though it is a shame that he isn't in because he saved FM. He deserves to be in.

Agreed.

But—and this is not a defense—it’s clear this Christine doc is really part of the Mac PR package they’re trying to ship to us. The presence of Mike and Neil, the absence of Lindsey, the out-of-place vignette about the Australia incident, Chris’s stance on the two of them fighting in her driveway, Mike’s comment that things get real when Christine walks onstage (which I agree with but for different reasons)—all of this is meant to undermine Lindsey’s presence and authenticate the current lineup. So, what is ultimately saddest here is that Christine’s spotlight isn’t really hers: it’s a corporate chess move. This is why so little of the doc actually focuses on Christine’s technique as a player and her abilities as a singer. Yes, she’s the “hook queen” who has written great songs for FM, but that is mentioned in the service of touting the band as a still-viable touring act.

The most interesting commentary comes from her Chicken Shack and Blue Horizon affiliates.

Agreed with all of this. Many out-of-place moments in that documentary. They could've used that time to excel Christine's abilities and technique as a musician and songwriter. But instead.....:shrug:

And why, oh why, did she let that happen?????? When they were asking her about all those incidents, she obliged and explained them in detail. It's impossible she didn't know their intentions. In fairness, the two law suits are of a different character. LB was right to sue them for the way the band behaved and any of the Mac members bitter about this would have to be a moron.

Bob was probably legally in the right to sue, as well--but in this case I don't think the Fleetwood and the McVies were intentionally screwing him over. Rather they had renegotiated their contracts with WB and neither they nor the parent company bothered to contact Bob. This callous oversight would be enough to want to make Bob sue. But I suspect, by the early 90s, the band considered their dealings with Bob long since finished. They had helped him launch his solo career; they contributed to his night at the Roxy; they pretty much watched out for him until FM itself imploded in the mid-80s. Yes, Welch deserved more but the band's treatment of him was not malicious or consciously motivated. I think they just pretty much moved on. Inexcusable--but not the same as Lindsey's case. That Christine was furious over Bob's lawsuit shows that none of the pre-75 trio expected it, or thought they deserved this. In fact, a lawsuit from Bob probably seemed like a bizarre echo of the Clifford Davis lawsuit.

Agree with all of this. It is definitely part of them trying to rebuild their brand going forward. Notice it's the first time we've seen Stevie do a sit-down interview in which she talks about anything FM, and certainly the first time we've heard her say his name (she didn't say it in the CBS interview if i recall correctly. She said stuff like 'one member didn't want to tour' etc etc).

Also agree with the negative stories about LB...why put them in the middle of a Chris doc?? I think they told themselves it was part of building the Stevie-Christine as nexus of the band narrative. "See, these two women have been the core all along". And Chris was even there to defend her from nasty man. There is an odd theme of the women having to tolerate bad men-- the whole John getting violent story is in there as well. Is that supposed to make it seem balanced??

This is definitely the first major piece in their clear decision to be more assertive in marketing themselves and rewriting history with a new narrative. It's also not surprising at ALL that they do this at the end of their touring -- they've seen they still sell, but just in case they put it out after most of the tour so it won't create any chatter from all the local reporters etc.

Or maybe Stevie got sick of how Mick was peddling the lies and how NOT well it was being received that she thought, Right, let me show y'all how we're gonna do this....

Somehow when watching it I felt like it was someone throwing a bone to Christine and her not quite recognizing what it's real goal was...

Sorry, I'm just catching up to everyone's reactions on this, so I'm going back in this thread for this quote, but... Is it possible that that was, subtly, her point? What they're doing now is "great," but it's not the Rumours 5, no matter what anyone else says.

If nothing else Christine is a sly Englishwoman who knows what she's saying/doing. She knows her words carry weight. (In that way, she and Stevie couldn't be more different.) I've been accused of giving Christine too much credit in the past, and I'm happy to be accused of that again on this topic, but it seems to me she's making a point about the Rumours 5 that cuts both ways.

Disclaimer: I'm saying all of this as someone who has not been able to view the doc yet!

I'm based on what she said in the documentary. The Auckland incident and what happened at this home during TITN. No need to mention things that have NOTHING to do with an interview about HER life.
If she wanted to talk about Lindsey, she could have mentioned how he's doing now. But maybe she has no idea at all....

Christine's attitude towards Lindsey (and the rest of the band) was different before and after the lawsuit. She didn't want to do anything with Stevie and Mick once Lindsey was fired and she even sent him an email.
I don't know what happened after the lawsuit but she definitely experienced a change of heart, IMO. I don't know if the lawsuit had anything to do with it, but we know she wasn't happy with Bob suing them. Maybe it was something else, but she's Team Stevie now. And that something I'd never, ever understand.

I can't understand it either, unless she's just as money driven as the rest of them. Also, I have no idea, but it seems like someone got to her and stranglehold-ed her. Because her story now is completely different than the original attitude she had right after it happened. Poor Lindsey, that must hurt to see her spouting this stuff.

Lindsey suing the band was something completely understandable from a business standpoint. And considering how fast they settled, he was completely within his right.

I think it's self preservation more than anything.

Christine is tied to Mick and John. Mick and Christine are the parents of Fleetwood Mac. And the baby brat demanded through her mgmt that Lindsey be taken out or good luck moving on without her.
Christine is more than happy to join the world of Rock and Roll again. However, she's not going to do it without the millions of dollars everyone else is making. And don't forget, she no longer gets royalties.

As an actor, musician, or any kind of talent based organization. It all comes down to self preservation. Christine makes a stand, the whole thing blows up and she goes home and sits in her London apartment thinking of how she could tour a solo album by herself. Face it, you can speculate why she's team Azoff/Nick$; but, it's clear as day to me.

This was a female narrative. A girl power theme to fit in with today's politically correct society. Of course, they are going to beat on the men a bit. And especially the man that was fired because NOBODY WAS HAPPY.
It's sad that they didn't make it 3 hours and cover everyone's transgressions.

For example, I was really impossible to deal with on a professional level WHEN I WAS DOING ALL THAT COKE AND THEN PILLS, and I can't blame Lindsey for leaving.

Last point I want to make is this: I believe in my heart that Lindsey was fired in part because he left all those years ago in 1987. There is a small part of them saying, take that!!
It's wrong and it makes me ill. But, that's my 30,000 foot view.

The documentary was okay, but what all the old stuff about Lindsey and Stevie was doing in there....I don’t know

It was supposed to be about Christine, so yes her relationship with John, now and then, was right to be there.

Lindsey’s sacking was okay to talk about as it’s pertinent to Fmac today( and why they have the current line up) but wasn’t really discussed.??

The sacking of Lindsey has its origins way back...at least back to 1998, when he
became a father....but maybe even further back than that.
Maybe he put her down one time too many.
In Stevie’s mind payback would be due one day and she could wait, and boy she waited.

I also think that it opened the door to having them think they could still make a ton of cash having the 2 ladies. (Which they have each tour with Billy/Rick and Mike/Neil). And since this is the "final" tour, they don't need to think legacy or new music or have any scruples whatsoever.

It's really interesting how Stevie loves to tell the coke era tales and the hole in her nose story when it pertains to herself, her own drama, and her own "comeback" per say, but she almost NEVER in recent years addresses it in terms of how it fully impacted the rest of the band in 1987. As more time passes, the narrative of Lindsey leaving persists but the other side of the story gets put on the back burner, conveniently the rest of the band never addresses it either, but let's talk about Lindsey leaving some more.

If we really want to talk about leaving promoters hanging and blah blah blah, let's talk about leaving a record contract hanging because somebody was too coked up to show up for half the record.

Had Christine and Lindsey not been able to hobble together TITN, they would of really been up the creek for both the record and the tour.

And Stevie REALLY owes Sandy Stewart a solid for bailing her out with Seven Wonders.

Completely agree. Let's talk about how your lack of focus and deteriorated health impacted those around you who covered for you and who tried to save your butt. Let's talk about how, in 1985-86, Lindsey and Christine were the only members of the five who were in good functioning order. The rest had to be propped up, coaxed back, or dried out. Let's talk about how Lindsey's enormous contributions to the post-Dance band are entirely ignored now. And let's talk about the fact that the BuckVie foursome tried to function as the Mac but were hamstrung by managers, lawyers, etc.

Remember how Mick said Christine stood up to Stevie and wouldn’t have it when Stevie started whining about not being on Christine’s songs? Christine said, I wanted you on my songs too, but YOU WEREN’T THERE!

But wait, um, who was that person Petty and Dylan had hanging around them?

Stevie never cared for the band the way Lindsey did/still does. For her, it was just a mean to an end: her solo career. And now she's using it to get back at him. What a pathetic and sad life she's living right now! :distress::distress:

Stevie never cared for the band the way Lindsey did/still does.

Did? Even in 1987? Lindsey was fairly reticent about recording a new Fleetwood Mac album, and after saying yes he was under strain during the record sessions. No surprise he left the band before the tour started.

People change over time.

Like many have said here, funny how Stevie (and her fans) LOVES to talk about Lindsey leaving the band in 1987, but they conveniently forget the reasons.
He was reticent to record an album? TITN saw the light of day thanks to Lindsey and Christine, while Stevie was too coked up to even remember what she was doing. THAT's why he was under strain. Because of Stevie and her deterioration in front of everybody, but especially in front of him.

Christine and Lindsey are the reason we had some form of FM music these past couple of years. Not Stevie.

I'm mad at Lindsey for wasting so much time on these people. Too bad he didn't leave them in 1987 and never came back.

It wasn’t just Stevie. Mick was in a crazed and needy state too at that time. It was hard to work with him and Lindsey said that he knew from Tusk that if it’s bad in the studio it’s going to be 10 times worse on the road.

He left after giving them an album to tour on. A very successful album.

He also put a motor home in his driveway to save wear and tear on his house whilst recording said album, oh, and yeah, to give Mick a place to meet his drug dealers and, if he were still couch-surfing, a place likely to sleep.

And that's probably WHY he was under strain during those recording sessions.

People have selective memory. And it's fascinating.

I just commented about the "Stevie never cared for the band the way Lindsey did/still does", and not defending Stevie or anybody. Lindsey left the band in 1987, and that's a fact. I'm not selective in my memories. And I'm not critizing him. He had reasons. Was Tango album that good because he produced it? Sure. Because of Chris singles? Sure. Did he care about the Tango tour success if he left the band? I guess not. Was he a bad guy for that reason? I wouldn't say that.

I just think no one was always 100% innocent in this story. But I'm not surprised about people getting upset about this topic. After 17 months, even the “Why I’m Done with Fleetwood Mac” generates 64 posts so... seems we are not done at all, actually. Well, if drama and tension were always present in Fleetwood Mac, why can't they be in us too? :)

Speaking for myself, after a several months hiatus (of course because of the april 2018 episode), I'm started to enjoy again listening occasionally my old Rumours lineup material, and that's it. Not interested in the present band nor its future. And not interested in hating any of them; it would give them importance.

I don’t get where’s the relevance in Lindsey leaving the band in 1987 with my comment about him caring more for the band than Stevie. She also left the band in 1990, and that’s also a fact. Touring means money, so yeah, Stevie and Mick definitely cared about touring. Lindsey lost money by leaving the band before touring. If anything, he gained integrity by leaving the band an album they can tour and make money with.

I will never get over what these a$$holes did to Lindsey, especially because he did nothing to deserve it, and that’s also a fact, because in no way are these people protecting him.

But caring about tour success is not the same as caring about its legacy. I don’t think he cared about the Tango tour success, but he did care about the album and he said that he was happy that he left the band in a more creative place than he thought Mirage left it. I don’t agree with him. I love Mirage. But the fact is, he was trying to do right by the band’s reputation with Tango. Yes he cared about it. The success of the tour has nothing to do with his feelings about the music Fleetwood Mac put out and the reputation they garnered or his loyalties. I think him showing up at Mick’s wedding said something about where his heart was.

But no he didn’t care about tour crowds or tour money at that point. He has always thought of tours as a means to an end. The money he makes on the tours allows him financial freedom. He cares on that account. But I don’t know what caring about the Tango tour box office means as a measure of commitment. The tour is over and forgotten. The Tango music lives with us.

This is the bit Stevie forgets. Or, just doesn't care about anymore because her writing has mostly dried up.

She did her recording bit years ago. She will let those albums speak for her for eternity and just let them be the fodder for the money-making tours until she drops.

She sees zero need for new music on her own or with the band. Why put in all that effort when there's no money in it? As far as she's concerned, her legacy is set (thanks in large part to Lindsey, and Jimmy, and to some extent Tom). It's done. She's a legend. Mission accomplished. On to the next presidential suite.

Unfortunately, I see Stevie as a lonely person whose only joy in life is being on stage. There is no husband or children. She has family, but it's not the same as John, Mick and Lindsey. Even Chris admits she got stir crazy after years of living alone not working in her home in England.

This band did Lindsey so wrong. I just watched the Buck/McVie documentary and it just makes me so mad at the rest of the group for siding with Stevie. It's just hard to get over it.

I agree after watching the Buck/McVie doc it makes all of this even harder to digest. I still stand by...I’m happy for the music I have got from these folks, It’s more than I expected. The legacy is what it is.........Rock on!

Reminds me of LB's comments about her and all of this late last year:

STEREOGUM: I read you haven’t spoken to any of them since then.

BUCKINGHAM: I haven’t spoken to any of them. Once we signed some papers a few weeks ago, I did hear from Christine in an email, as I expected to. I know Mick would probably like to, but I think he’s too embarrassed and just a little too weak-willed to do it. I won’t hear from Stevie because it was all her trip anyway. Again, I just have to forgive them because it’s really just Stevie being so needy for a certain kind of attention and maybe not wanting to compete with the vitality that I have.

STEREOGUM: Do you think you’ll ever end up back with the band?

BUCKINGHAM: Look, it’s Fleetwood Mac, anything’s possible. Maybe they’ll get it out of their system. If they ask me to come back, would I? Sure, because to me I think the lack of a proper farewell tour, if that’s what we’re doing, that doesn’t undercut, like I say, the legacy that we have so carefully built as the five of us, which they’re not doing right now. I don’t know what they’re doing. It’s a cover band kind of deal, and Stevie may be enjoying that, and that’s fine. If she is happy doing that, there is no one outcome that I think is going to be okay. The way I look at it is it’s giving me an opportunity to do some things in a more rapid-fire way with some new people who actually care about what I’m doing and not just about getting the money from Fleetwood Mac. Look, I mean it does make me question who these people are, but again, to look at it compassionately, I think it’s all coming from a lack of perspective and to some degree a certain weakness on their parts. I can’t stop loving them because of that.

WHY would he go back? More for the paycheck, or more for the star trip, playing to filled arenas?

F*ck them. He should tell them that. Then throw rocks at them. Did I mention, "F*CK THEM"?

The true payback should be him writing a SCATHING tell all book about the stupid old goat. That's what $he deserves!

Why would he go back? The paycheck is alluring. But I think his main reason would be to rehabilitate the damaged legacy of the band, something he cares deeply about. Lindsey isn’t stupid: he loves his solo work but knows much of his posterity and reputation is tied to FM. It matters to him that the band is remembered for vitality, excellence, and purpose. Yes, what the four have done to him is awful and inexcusable, but I get the sense he’d overlook it (or, more accurately, leverage it) should the band ever reunite and attempt new music. As unlikely as that is, there’s a much stronger chance that Lindsey would want to than Stevie...she’s the saboteur here.

I can't imagine anyone(unless they were absolutely desperate for the money) ever going back, after being treated like this.

$he doesn't want to stand on the same stage as him, ever again....

How could HE ever want to stand on the same stage again, with that back stabbing bi*ch?

It's not about being on the same stage with her again. I'm sure that's the worst part of coming back (IF they EVER ask him to come back. Because I'm sure they won't). But he did NOTHING wrong, so he naturally wants to have one last chance with FM. For him and for the fans.

But $tevie will never allow it. That will diminish her power. Yes, she's that sick.:nod:

Oh, but she “loves” him! That’s why she mentioned the guitar incident. I’m sure there are equally colorful anecdotes about Stevie’s temper, but she conveniently forgot to mention them.

no, more like because HE was too discreet to blab them to the press the way she does about him. And probably partly because he still loved her for so long after she dumped him and moved on and hoped she might come back. We see how well that worked out.

He has however not shied away from taking his shots through criticisms of her work, which honestly seems fair game to me. They worked together, he was her producer, he can be honest about where her songs were lacking and how much work he had to do to make them hits.

She on the other hand can only go for the personal.

Well, she's a f*cking IDIOT. How deep do you expect her to go?

To be fair, neither one of them are great with words. But he can at least think of fairly intelligent things to say. She just goes for the jugular.

All this really makes me wonder if she ever has any idea, of how insulated she is, and that she's nowhere near reality? Surrounded by yes people, and hasn't really been an individual for what? 20 years? 30 years? Do I hear 40?
