Spectator article by a Michael Hann
https://www.spectator.co.uk/2019/06/why-im-done-with-fleetwood-mac/
from the article:
The Mac have long had hipster allure (search SoundCloud for Fleetmac Wood, who make disco and dance edits and mixes of old Mac tracks), but the people at Wembley weren’t hipsters: they were simply in love with one of the great catalogues of modern pop, specifically that created by the Lindsey Buckingham-Stevie Nicks iteration of the group.
One problem, though. Fleetwood Mac sacked Buckingham last year, and without him and the peculiar rage he brought to their show they were no more than a very high-class karaoke act. For several years I had wondered why their gigs were built around the psychodrama between Buckingham and Nicks, with them pretending to be starcrossed lovers, decades after their romantic relationship ended, and with every-one present knowing they despised each other. In his absence, the answer became clear: it provided a narrative structure that held everything together, a sense of tension that made a nostalgia show something that felt alive.
No show with songs as good as ‘Go Your Own Way’ or ‘Landslide’ or ‘Dreams’ is going to be bad. But Fleetwood Mac certainly had a good go at it: the sound was awful, even by the standards of huge shows, and the production — a crucial element in stadiums — redefined the word ‘perfunctory’. A couple of hundred quid to squint at underlit figures, with most of the music just a morass of sludge? They should have been ashamed.
One of the loveliest songs on Rumours was Buckingham’s acoustic number ‘Never Going Back Again’. It came to mind as I left Wembley. Alas, even with a band I love, I’m never going back again.

I mistyped “Done” as “Dine” in the thread title. Can a moderator help me edit it? I don’t know how.

Ok, although this guy probably wouldn't dine with Fleetwood Mac either.

I agree completely, too. The band of my life is dead to me. I'll always listen to their past, but never see a show again, or buy any "viable product"(bonus points for naming that reference).

I have been a fan sine the 1970s. The thing that now exists as a money mill oldies jukebox unit is no longer Fleetwood Mac to me. Stevie is a real life Medea to ruin Fleetwood Mac's chance to make one more album with their classic lineup . I am hearing rumblings that one of the only other international mega bands of the 1970s with all living members may make one more album. If ABBA should do this it will help wash away the bitter disappointment of the needless implosion of the other big band of my teenage years.
And I just dig her speaking and singing voice, drunk or sober.
Hope you enjoy her forked tongue as well, drunk or sober.

That was kind of her charm. Cool, pretty, yet strong AF. You didn't f*ck with Christine McVie!
Back then anyway. She's an old company shill, now. :(

Well, the whole Bob Welch thing with the RRHOF is so much more believable to me now that this thing with Lindsey has happened. We should have listened to Wendy when she was so vocal on these boards a few years ago. I thought she was a little nuts then. Not so much now.

I agree. Wendy telling us the whole Bob story about Christine, was the beginning of the end, of me being her #1 fan. I began to see her darker side.
BuckVie was one of my favorite experiences, ever. So all their "love" was WHAT? Just some fake assed show??? Christine SUCKS in the loyalty department(sorry, John). She does!
And I do think that Wendy was a little nuts, but Bob was her world, and she defended him until her death. I admire that quality. True love!

Right? FM members "WERE" the superstars of my life. Lindsey is pretty much the only one I'd give AF to meet, now. Maybe Christine, but she's becoming a doddering old lady now, so I'm not sure I'd want to(plus, holding my tongue about her treatment of Lindsey). Mick's a f*cking idiot. Stevie a complete narcissist. I've never understood a single word John has spoken...
It's weird how 80% of your heroes become greedy old assh*les!
RIP, FM.
As much as I don’t like how the last chapter of the “Soundtrack of my life” band comes to an end I still don’t get all the nastiness and mean spirited posts. Yes we all have our opinions and perspectives etc. This band is a business. Some decisions have to be made and sometimes it doesn’t always keep in mind how it effects the individuals. I don’t like what the new MAC stands for today (no new music and only “hits”) but whatever! Just listen to the music that has been recorded and Sing,Dance and Rock! Life is too short. Enjoy what we have.😎

Just keep in mind that all the nastiness you’re talking about was started by Mick and Stevie, when they lied about Lindsey’s reasons to “leave” the band. You can’t get nastier than that. We’re just fans, they were supposed to be his family.
I won’t EVER get over what they did to him. If someone doesn’t like my posts and how I pour all my anger/sadness/frustration in them, they can always skip them.

it's been over a year and I still can't listen to them.
Every time I start to I think about what they did to him...then I have to turn it off. Even the Danny Kirwan stuff bothers me now, how they tossed him and Bob. I heard a new interview w/Mick, first I've heard from any of them in forever....and he sounded like a shill. What Lindsey said in the beginning about legacy was so true...and at the time I didn't really think about it.
If bands were colors the Beatles would be white, the Rolling Stones would be black.
Now, if you were to ask me what 'color' is Fleetwood Mac, I'd say crap stain brown.

The article is right.
I love Fleetwood Mac. But they really need to stop now.
They've done the extra tour, Mick's got his money.
But the diabolical sound at Wembley just summed them up. A band with no purpose just raking in the money from their fans.
For the sake of their legacy, they need to call it a day.
Christine is nearly 76. Her voice is shot. She can't go on.
Lindsey leaving should've been the end.

The disavowal of Bob Welch was awful. Wendy was unhinged toward the end, but she was grieving hard.
None of that affected my love for Christine, since the pull for me has always been the music. Bob’s decision to sue his former band mates was bound to have serious consequences—no matter how technically correct he may have been in doing so.
But Christine’s participation in this tour is beyond disappointing—as is John’s. I expected this from Mick.
What really saddens me most is that she could have spent the year working on more new music with or without her creative pal—instead of falling in with the Stevie Nicks and Players Heritage Company.
Still, I love her voice. Her songs. It would take more then band politics for me to change my mind and heart about that.

I'm convinced he doesn't care who is up there. My favorite moment is when John says "Thank you!!!" at the end of Hypmotized on the 1975 tour. He sounds absolutely smashed.

This is all so true. It feels very weird that I cannot, in good conscience, support the band. This is the first tour I've missed since the 1980s. The thing that is so hard to comprehend is the sold-out crowds. Who are these people? I can't support the band because of their unconscionable treatment of Lindsey, but I also think it's really creepy and weird that they're dragging Neil Finn and Mike Campbell around. I missed Lindsey when Rick and Billy were in the band, but I didn't feel utter disdain and embarrassment for them. I even went to see them on tour back then, and I own the TITN video. But THIS incarnation just feels like a crotchety, past-their-prime gaggle of old codgers/hucksters who need to pack it in. I wouldn't feel this way if Lindsey were with them because it'd be our old band touring. But this...they just seem like a bunch of corny hacks. It sounds stupid, I know, but I really miss loving them. They've been a huge part of my life. I'm grateful for the like-minded people here on The Ledge.

I’m sure they don’t care at all. As long as they make $$$$, Lindsey can die tomorrow and none of them will stop touring.
But they “love the guy”. Yeah, right Christine, I’m sure you do.

They’re not dragging Finn and Campbell. At this point they know the whole truth and like the rest of the band, they don’t care.
I’m also happy to have a place like The Ledge where I can speak my mind without being censored. :D

The thing is: These latest articles insinuate that FM would have been over if not for Neil saving them.
I really wish they would have considered just touring as the 4 piece. It would have been so much more amazing for the legacy if they had done that.
Stevie, go tour with the Pretenders so you can still draw and be famous with no soul.
And FM will continue as a solid 4 piece and do a final album and tour. Boom. We get smaller arenas and more acoustic treats. I'll never forget that BuckVie tour. It was out of this world to see them in that capacity.
Oh Well (as they say). They went for the fame, money, and lifestyle. That was predictable. But please don't misunderstand or confuse it with, "Neil saved FMac." He did nothing of the sort. In actual fact, he ruined it.

Amen, brother (sister). If they'd gone as a foursome they could have continued to create and be respected. They're already rich and do not need more money--well, except Mick.

I get what your saying and it’s a solution...
However I doubt we would see The Quartet in The UK..
Not that I’ve been this tour..(no way)
But for the band to have a decent and brave closure....that’s the way forward.

And then of course, here's your check for $15,000,000.00.
Good thing because your main checking account is down to $4.503,093.03.

Mick's tone, innuendo and actual statements lately make me think they (the 4 stooges) didn't actually think Lindsey's departure would resonate as much, as far, and as long as it has. So now, he's being snarky. He got caught in a big lie, this tour is not doing as well as a final tour with the Rumours 5 would have (I am assuming they are done after this) 5 dates in Europe and a 2 of 5 star review!! OUCH. Neil Finn saved FM? Please, he can't even carry the guitar parts on his own. The press around this tour really has been abysmal. Lindsey is the focus of huge chunks of these interviews (another reason they are probably getting snarky) It's not about the music anymore. Oh---and Stevie is doing ZERO press.

Or is his snark just for the hardcore fans? He's quite happy to play for the dilettantes who just show up for the hits and couldn't name anyone in the band except maybe Stevie. As long as the checks clear. I think he could care less about some newspaper review as long as they are selling tickets. I think that's true of the rest as well.

It definitely could be. It's the hardcore fans that are irate. He may not pay attention to the reviews, but I would think Azoff does, and I think Stevie does too. Her brand is what enabled them to pull this stunt. Imagine if she walked away now too....FM is tarnishing HER brand  Because she would see it that way. I'll give her this, she's much smarter in thinking ahead than Mick is. Mick thinks he can hole up in Hawaii for a few months, let the dust settle and call up ol Lindsey for a gig on his next album, just like nothing ever happened.

Even though this tour has been successful (before any Stevie’s fan claims how many tickets they’re selling), I don’t think they could have imagined how much support Lindsey would have. Stevie clearly thought everybody was there to see her. Right....
They’re probably tired of dealing with so many questions about Lindsey and at this point they can fool no journalist with their “Lindsey quit the band” speech.
Stevie should know by now that doing ZERO press raises a lot of suspicions.

I bet Stevie can’t wait for this tour to be over and leave all those losers behind.

JWD that pretty much sums it up perfectly. This big a line up change "after" the Dance is completely unacceptable- and that was 22 years ago. The current line up does not work and the attempt to mask Nicks and McVie's diminished talents with Campbell and Finn is not helping. While talented they are not a fit to this band and as a fan of the many other wonderful line ups, I cannot bear to watch it. My time as a devoted fan is over and I rarely listen to any of their music anymore.

It destroyed their legacy, from love to hate
As it constitutes pure venom aimed at Lindsey
The "new" touring "band" amounted to a cash grab... before they all go off onto new, probably less lucrative, gigs (Stevie as a solo artist with or without Campbell and Mick as a Crowded House drummer)
They could have just ended the band and not broken hearts
But they don't care

Greedy bunch of old geezers who now suck at their craft, are stale as 5 year old bread, ad nauseam ad infinitum.
Nostalgia is a bitch, folks, and it doesn't advance the world and its needs any.
It boggles the mind that people still pay money to see these has-beens. One of those things in life I just cannot even begin to understand. Specially with the good indie music that is constantly being published & which is fresh and interesting and intelligent and lyrical and well performed.
To me, this bunch were no longer viable as a band as far back as the early 90's, with LB being the one remaining saving grace.
And THEN, in addition, they go and commit lower-than-dirt acts against a colleague and business partner and, "supposedly" friend, of 40 years.
So, yeah . :]
Fleetwood who?
Glad I stopped giving them my money the past 25 years -- LB being the golden exception.

$tevie was the commercial to a once good program. And corporate and commercial rule. And that's that. :distress:

The thought of an alternate universe in which Fleetwood Mac released the album known to us as BuckVie and toured behind those new songs + the usual set of Rumours regurgitation is still more appealing to me than our current reality: Fleetwood Mac becoming the band known for covering "Free Falling" and "Don't Dream It's Over." I say this as a massive Tom Petty fan, and I'm fine if I'm in the minority on this. :wavey:

That is what kills me. How any fan can think covering Free Fallin and Don't Dream it's over is ok. The band has so many songs they could be doing from their own catalog that they don't need these cover songs (Unless of course you are trying to make the connection for those in the audience who actually might not know who MC and NF are).
This band is known for some really questionable antics over the year but I have to say this is to me the dumbest thing they have ever done. I really can't wrap my head around the fact that at the end of the line they trot out a new lineup to play a mostly GH tour. It would be one thing if they had new music but to tour again with no new material is beyond idiotic. It truly boggles the mind that some people don't see how this is so stupid. Honestly how many times do you need to hear the same songs over and over performed the same old way. Even the rare stuff they trotted out they started dropping once it was clear that the audience didn't know or care for it.
I think years from now this ending of the band will not be viewed as favorably as others. It will end up being like a trivia card.

I completely agree with you here. Particularly since so many bands are making 2018/2019 their "farewell" and are doing it well. There is promotion around it, interviews etc. FM....their US promotion was laughable and exposed the lie. UK promotion was pretty close to non existent save for rolling out NF and MF. And the AUS/NZ promotion makes it seem like Crowded House is on tour with special guests from FM and TPH. And Stevie is no where to be found in any interviews. That's unheard of for any prior tours. It's like they relying more on their loyal Instagram followers to do the marketing for them. Looking forward to them hobbling towards the sunset now.

I agree but at least he wanted new music. If nothing else there was that to look forward to until SN put a stop to it.

I suspect that they didn't anticipate the blow back they got. Tickets did sell but I wouldn't say this tour was a smashing success. They sold a million tickets this tour. I wonder how many they sold last tour in 2014-2015? Likely just as many if not more since Christine was back.

The point is: Why fire someone just to play his songs and NO new songs?
It's insane.

2014-2015 Was #2 on the Touring acts list when Christine came back.
I’m done with Fmac because no matter how you cut it, they are not the same without Lindsey, I’ll play their old stuff.
But, I won’t go to another concert, and certainly won’t buy any more music, even if there was any.
It has taken me a long time to get my head round this, but they’re done.
I’ve been a fan since 1967 when they were a British blues band...and I’ve loved them for 50 odd years, but I’m not interested in them anymore.
I don’t think they would have been much different if Lindsey hadn’t been forced out, they would not have had a swan song Album...yes we know why.
They would just have toured every other year, so that’s that.
Makes me want to cry.
This year I have been married 50 years and we do loads of new stuff all the time. (That doesn’t have to cost the earth)
Just because you get a little older, doesn’t mean you dry up and become desiccated....just different.
And that’s what they should have done, grown old gracefully (or not)
but at least grown older together....

Agreed.
Answer, sadly, is greed.
