"Mick Fleetwood doesn't think Fleetwood Mac will Reunite with Ex Members"

https://canoe.com/entertainment/music/mick-fleetwood-doesnt-think-fleetwood-mac-will-reunite-with-ex-members

The title of the piece and Mick's evasive language try to lump Green, Spencer, and Buckingham together in the same category as "ex members" but reading not so subtly between the lines, it's clear he's making an argument for going forward without Buckingham:

"I don't think there will be a point where the band's former members all end up back in a good place together."

Quit the doublespeak, Mick. What you really mean is "I don't think Stevie will ever consent to working with Lindsey again on stage, so he's out. We're standing by her." Just say it, coward.

I live in hope.

If Lindsey almost dying doesn't do it, maybe Stevie has to experience something herself (I'm not ill-wishing her), but something needs to crack that heart of stone.

Also not surprised. They're siding with Stevie, of course. The reasons may vary, but I have the feeling Mick is also enjoying this, aside from standing by Stevie.

I think nothing will make her change her mind about Lindsey. Sadly, she finally showed her true colors.

On BBC 2 Mick at least acknowledged Lindsey's huge contribution to the band's legacy.

He lives for the drama. His statement was so vague I actually had to reread it a few times because it made no sense. However the innuendo was definitely clear. 2 out of 5 stars makes you sit up and take notice though. Time to pack it in...hard to believe this is likely their farewell tour. So very sad.

Thank goodness! I NEVER ever ever want LB to breathe the same air as that gagworthy solipsistic bunch of has-beens.

This is GREAT news to me therefore. Let 'em rot elsewhere, far away from LB :blob1:

It would have been more satisfactory (for us and for him) if he had made the decision of leaving instead of being forced to leave by this bunch of a$$holes.

As much as they’re trying to diminish the Lindsey’s situation, 2 out of 5 stars and from the London Times is not something to take lightly. And they know it’s because of Lindsey.

They’re determined to ignore Lindsey, so this is most likely their farewell tour

This article makes me so sad. I imagine Lindsey's reaction upon reading it. Feelings of hopelessness. I never imagined this before but I can picture him falling into uncontrollable tears. I want to reach out and give my precious Lindsey a cyber hug. I can't even imagine how crappy this makes him feel. I was so hoping Stevie would soften her anger over time and be calculating a new way to bring Lindsey back to the band.

Mick is absolutely certain he's honoring Lindsey? In which way? Ignoring his calls and choosing Stevie's side of the story over his? He didn't even let the man defend himself from whatever Stevie decided he did wrong in her twisted world.

On the BBC 2 Radio interview he said Danny was at the first Wembley concert. So, they honor every former band member for their contribution but they chose to ignore Lindsey?

I'm actually hoping he's not reading any of this. It won't make him any good. :distress::distress:

And I'm more surprised at Christine's coldness. I said many times I'm not giving a pass to any of them. It's easy to blame Mick and/or Stevie but the truth is they all remained quiet (even Campbell and Finn) and let things happen.

I actually feel kind of sorry for Christine ..she seems like a decrepit old crone who can no longer sing or play. Mick has always been a money grubbing whore who even if he is sober is a dry drunk.Stevie to give the devil her due can still hold her own live. She should have just disbanded Fleetwood Mac (which she now runs) instead of letting it come to this pathetic end.

It’s all about the cash - no way she brings in solo what she can with the Fleetwood Mac moniker. But, I completely agree, Stevie can totally hold her own live still whereas it’s been very hard to cover for Christine’s lack of ability for five years now.

Mick and Stevie are just gross as far as the Lindsey situation. The McVie’s maybe a little less gross, but equally at fault. Even quiet Johnny. He or Chris could’ve put the kibosh on this crap at any time. Campbell and Finn saw a payday they’d never get otherwise and silently went along with the others.

I disagree that she can no longer sing or play. Her voice can’t handle arenas very well but she can still turn in a powerful studio recording, as her collaboration with Lindsey reveals. Was there studio machinery to help? Of course, but there is with Stevie, too. The point is, on record, Christine is as creative and viable as she’s always been. But because she’s frailer and because her 16-year absence essentially dethroned her as the once “guiding hand” in band affairs, we ARE seeing an echo of what she once was.

Agree that she is different in the studio vs live. In fact, from a singing perspective, I always felt her voice was better aligned in the studio. Unfortunately, she took 16 of the worst possible years for a human to go dormant with their craft and then try a comeback afterward. And it’s just harder to cover up those weaknesses live.

Well I was at one of the first concerts of the On with the Show tour, october 2014, and frankly I didn't like Lindsey's voice. It was far lower than the last time I saw them (2009). Christine's voice wasn't the same either, but, to be honest, it was his voice that made me think... Ok, they are not singing that good anymore. Though the show was stunning, I think I'd understand if this is the last tour. My personal opinion.

which is odd because she sounded fabulous on her last solo album; her voice was in fine fettle, and that made it all the weirder that she was so lost in the mix on BuckVie. She definitely was wobbly vocally on that tour, and surely the massive demands of a Mac world tour have not helped the situation.

Yes! That part doesn’t bother me in the least.

What bothers me - but doesn’t surprise me because every single thing Kristen Buckingham states turned out completely truthful over and over again - so yeah what does bother me is that Mick confirmed he hasn’t reached out to Lindsey even after Lindsey almost died. And he doesn’t even understand how horrible of a person that makes him look. Makes all of them look. Because they are such bad people that they obviously don’t get the most normal decent human behavior.

Agree with this. She’s still inspired and can be great in the studio. Unfortunately what she came back to is a nostalgia live circuit and not a creative artistic entity. BuckVie album was happy and warm. But live Lindsey worked really hard to carry her on their tour. I loved BuckVie tour and their chemistry but it was liberating having full throttle Lindsey back on his solo anthology tour last fall.

My two cents;

I think Chris was fine with Linds until the suit. She may have taken that a little personally even though she shouldn't have. I think she took it more as a slam at all of them rather than Linds just getting his due. Either way, I don't think she is one to hold a grudge anyway, look at all the crap the band has been through and she stuck in through the majority of the way regardless.

As far as Mick's comments go, we all know exactly what he meant; "I don't think there will be a point where the band's former members all end up back in a good place together.... unless of course our fellow guitarists leave and we cannot continue, then of course we would be willing to negotiate a sit-down for a potential reunion. The door is always open, always revolving."

This makes no sense whatsoever. I know it’s your 2 cents, but considering she sent Lindsey extremely nice email AFTER lawsuit was settled, it’s pretty obvious she had no problem with his lawsuit. And she has been pretty clear and consistent that she has nothing to do with his firing, that she was shocked when she heard of it, that she had great time with him for BuckVie, and that she accepted Lb is out only after Mick mansplained to her the situation the band is in. She should t have accepted Mucks mansplaining and possibly could have put a stop on the whole charade, but apparently she didn’t have a spine for it, and still doesn’t. At least she stopped giving the interviews trotting the company line.

what was really interesting was that during the making of BuckVie Chris said that Stevie would call her periodically to ask how things were going and how Lindsey was behaving. Chris said she would report to Stevie that he was indeed "being a good boy" -- whatever that means. No outbursts? Not being too bossy pants? It wasn't clear. But it felt like Stevie was gauging maybe whether to ever agree to record again or not based on how he was with Chris, or maybe she was gauging how he was with someone other than herself ("oh he's all collaborative with Chris but not with me" or whatever). Did she think she had to be big sister looking out for Chris from big bad LB? The whole thing was very curious.

I think some of the frailness and uncertainty we saw from her was LB's reliance on pre-recorded tracks. He's been doing it for years and when I saw him for his most recent solo tour a friend turned to me and said "those pre-recorded tracks are not cool. At all."

He may have been holding back a little, but I didn't see that.

Yes--that's what is disappointing. Her allegiance to a band name, to Mick's mission, which was informed by Stevie's demands. If it were Lindsey they were saving, Christine would have done the same thing: toe the company line, give fake enthusiastic interviews, while intimating that she really respects and misses Stevie (instead of Lindsey). What we all wanted was the Christine of yore--the Christine of the Tusk tour who slaps people's faces or chuck's wine at them if they piss her off. That Christine is gone.

Thankfully, we still have the great tunesmith she is who can make very good records. I'm still hoping (no matter how delusional) for another solo or LB-collaboration from her...

What they did to Lindsey was horrific and bullying, esp Mick and Stevie.

How John and Chris went along with it is ridiculously mean, and spineless.

How Mike and Neil went along with this............I don't care about the paycheque for them, even Rock n Roll has some kind of moral code about screwing over fellow artists, and I don't care about whether they were in the dark-at some point they found out what went down.....I'm sure that there must be higher morals around than here.

How they all ghosted him: they are all petty, rude and immature.

How they all ghosted him after a major health event: beyond anything I can even explain, I'm still shaking my head. And Mick admitting to it in the press, stupid a$$hole. He's so stupid he doesn't even realize how bad he looks.

For all those people making the snide and rude comments about Kristen, she has been DEAD RIGHT about this group of a$$holes. Thank goodness for her, or we may never have known what really went down.

Lindsey, my heart still breaks for him, every single time any of them open their mouths in an interview or a concert. He loved them, and put his heart and soul into this band, it still has to hurt.....no matter how much we think he's better off without them (and he is), it's just got to hurt him.

That’s a pretty flimsy excuse considering on the current FM tour there’s no LB or his backing tracks - so what’s the excuse for her frailness now?

He was so making sure she can shine on BuckVie tour and was covering for any problems she may have had. Now when he’s not there, she’s getting slammed.

You may not like the backing tracks and that’s a fair complaint, but blaming LB for everything and anything that’s been going on for decades is getting old. He’s not there now so it’s time to stop blaming him for bands problems that are now so obvious and laid bare in recent European reviews.

I wasn’t aware the band was using backing tracks now. Not interested in their new configuration beyond an occasional morbid curiosity. I did see some vids of Christine on tour with them now and she seems far less tentative and frail than she did on the Buckvie tour. Her voice is pretty weak but she’s kept her phrasing. And she is clearly playing the keys very well on several tracks—something she did not do on the BuckVie tour. Hence my speculation about the pre-recorded tracks.

But I’m an LB fan. So I’m assuming your comment “it’s time to stop blaming him...” was addressed to the general public and not to me in particular. If it was the latter, you’re off base.

I love the Rumours 5. And I could forgive them a lot. A LOT. The drama, the BS, the fake love story (that I don't think too many people actually bought?) the lies, etc. But they crossed the line this time. That CBS interview needs to go down as the biggest load of horse sh*t ever. I would love to bend Anthony Mason's ear on that.
There was never a question as to whether or not I would see this current configuration. I wouldn't. I have a ton of respect for Mike Campbell. I saw TPH the July before TP passed away at Forest Hills in NY--Would say the best venue ever to see a concert and I would pay top dollar to see the Rumours 5 play there. I put that concert in my top 5 concerts of all time. But Mike Campbell is not FM. I have respect for Neil Finn as a musician and an artist, but I am not New Wave fan, and to me, CH is New Wave. I saw the videos of GYOW and SHN and he admirably tried to do what LB did, but he couldn't. NF does not belong in a band like FM. He just doesn't.
Christine coming back to FM in 2014/15 was a dream come true. And I loved her until she went all "Benedict Arnold" so this is really tough for me to say, but Christine's voice is shot. Just shot. Like ears bleeding. I don't understand the notion "she's a great studio singer". Does that mean once all the technology in the studio manipulates her voice so it's palpable to the human ear, she's great? FM is a live concert nostalgia act. That's all they do, all they will ever do ever more. If she can't sing unless someone is manipulating her vocals to unrealistic like levels, she shouldn't be there.
Mick is a total buffoon and I actually believe would do ANYTHING for a buck. And as time goes on, I am more convinced John McVie might be a hologram. Honestly, the only person in the band who has held up, and whose voice has matured in a way that, listening to her earlier stuff makes sense, is Stevie. And factoring in studio "manipulation" She sounded fairly consistent on this tour.
FM has truly become Stevie's backing band.

It’s really not as straightforward as that. Christine’s voice is weak and she’s old. Hearing her live IS disappointing, but entirely expected for someone her age. But I’ve watched a lot of clips and her tone is still there, as is her phrasing and timing. She can’t sing in arenas or even smaller theatres . She simply doesn’t have the power or the stamina. That’s sad.

But being a studio vocalist isn’t just about relying on studio machinery. All of the FM singers (and many more in the business) use the machinery. But none of that machinery would matter if the singer doesn’t still have their tone and phrasing. When people (like me) say Christine is a good studio singer, they mean she can do as many takes as she needs in a chamber like setting that allows her to annunciate without having to shout to be heard. Many great singers in rock were essentially studio singers and not as effective live. (Diana Ross and Olivia Newton John are examples.) When Christine sings on record she sounds like she always has. So, I still say she’s a great studio singer. Her voice has its same warmth and I get the same emotional response from a song like say, “Red Sun” that I get from “Over My Head.” The voice still sounds intact. If she needs some gadgetry to help her along, I’ll take it because no one else sounds like her and I still long for music from her.

For what it’s worth, her voice was really shot during the Mirage tour. And there’s a 1977 bootleg of her singing YMLF where she sounds like a dying whale. Other times, she was spot on. And some of the clips from the current tour show her occasionally rising to an acceptable standard, so her on-again/off-again difficulty with live shows has been around for a loooooooong time.

I agree with 95% of your post, EXCEPT $tevie's voice being the only one that's "still there". THAT'S because $he reduced her singing range to 3-4 notes, TWO DECADES AGO. She plays it safe, staying in her tiny window. So yeah, I guess she could be perceived as "sounding better", because she takes no chances. Christine and Lindsey TRY for the original notes. Goat Mama just bleats and bleats the same notes, over and over.

It's sad that it's all come to this. They really should hang it up. :distress:

It's sad that it's all come to this. They really should hang it up. :distress:

Know what? They did, the minute they fired Lindsey.

Hi-I thought I responded here earlier and realized I didn't. Thank you for sharing your perspective on what you meant on Studio musicians. It makes sense. I think she actually sounded the best during The Dance. I was so happy to have her back during OWTS, but there were some blips. I think the energy made up for the blips. I miss the dynamic of the Rumours 5. Full disclosure I didn't attend any of these shows, but the videos I've seen--its the dynamic and energy missing (IMO) perhaps that's what Christine is lacking?

Stevie to give the devil her due can still hold her own live. She should have just disbanded Fleetwood Mac (which she now runs) instead of letting it come to this pathetic end.

I have this sense that Fleetwood Mac is currently a sort of marketing branch of the Stevie Nicks solo corporation. Everything last year — the "Ellen" appearance, the few print interviews, the tour itself, all of which she's clearly the only star of — all felt like laying the ground for the rock and roll hall of fame award. I think Fleetwood Mac is now officially a Stevie Nicks™ Production.

As long as Lindsey is not in the band, I won't support them.

I'll still listen to old music and reminisce, but I have no desire to attend a FM show without Lindsey nor will I buy any new material they produce (if they ever do). I've watched a few YouTube videos of the new band and they're cringeworthy; they're like a bad cover band; they've lost their spark.

We finally had the Rumours band back together again, with a chance of getting new music, and they ruin it with their egos.

Yeah, but at the end, he was the one that was fired.

I'm also not saying he was exactly adoring her before he was kicked out of the band but he'd probably never get him fired just to prove a point. He'd never jeopardize the legacy of the band over a whim.

Never? I'm not sure about that. Ok, not over a whim but over egos, personal interests... I'm not sure. Remember he thought all of them have some inner demons that they struggle with. He sure said that for a reason, and the song was named My little demon, not His/Her little demon. Anyway I'm not demonizing Lindsey, and not victimizing Stevie. I just think they all are a bit guilty, in some way they all are responsible. But just my perception. Only they know what really really happened.

I agree. And following the "What if" speculations, what would have happened if John and Chrstine had said they would not continue in the band without Lindsey? If all was about money, Mick and Stevie would have accepted.

But again, only they know the complete story. I'm pretty sure they have not told everything.

I really thought things had changed during The Dance. I guess that was all about the money too.

I wish I shared this view, but my impression was that pretty much everything they did after Tusk was about money and only money. Recording Mirage and Tango were reportedly MISERABLE and occurred after the solo careers were up and running. I can't imagine why they'd put themselves through that if not for money or contractural obligations relating to money. "Live" was only released because Mick was bankrupt, same goes with his tabloid autobiographies. Chris and John were confirmed conservatives (and BRITISH) so I can't imagine their reuniting for the Clinton performance was because of their passion for his campaign.

Everyone's careers were in the TANK by the time 1997 rolled around, so I'm sure The Dance (which was originally just going to be an MTV Unplugged episode) and the ensuing tour was attractive to all of them. I mean Christine was unhappy for the entire thing. I guess things (both money and personal relationships) went well enough for them to think Say You Will would be a less miserable experience (it wasn't) but you could argue a good bit of why they made that album was to ride off of the success of The Dance. Every tour after that has just been a Greatest Hits cash grab`(with the possible exception of Christine's return, I don't think that was motivated by money on her part).

As far as the solo albums, you could make an argument that Mick's albums were done out of his own weird passion but his financial issues at the time cast doubt on that. Christine was contracturally obligated to make her 1984 album, which is why she had Todd Sharp do half of it for her. In the Meantime was a passion project for sure though.

Lindsey's solo career is obviously for his love of the music, and I'd make the argument that Stevie's first two solo albums are the same way. They were vehicles for her to express herself more freely and get more of her songs out there (Jimmy Iovine's motivations are different story obvisouly). RAL is a sell out album for sure.

This isn't to say that all of these projects are just soulless cash grabs, they wouldn't have turned out as amazing as they did without all the other factors (their love of making music, wanting to express themselves creatively, playing so well off of each other etc). But I can't imagine a prime motivator other than money, why else would they make themselves so unhappy so often?

But you know what... that's okay. They're talented musicians and it's a business and it's a business I'm happy to indulge.

This is what Stevie couldn't get over:

A relatively widely publicized Fleetwood Mac project was started regardless of her commitment written on the bottom line.

Her bluff was called and the project was still released. It was a Fleetwood Mac album minus Stevie Nicks and all of the positive press called this out.

Despite Lindsey and Christines effort to twist the plot and NOT throw her under the bus by saying it "evolved into a duets album"

For the better part of 2 years Fleetwood Mac essentially carried out a project despite her absence and it was well received. It also proved for the first time since 1997 that Stevie Nicks didn't have the upper hand in Fleetwood Mac anymore.

...and she sure did see to changing that.

In my mind, the day they announced that album was being released was essentially waging war in the eyes of the Nicks camp. It wasn't a matter of what her reaction would be, it was when and how. As much as I loved the album and tour, I would cringe every time I thought of how it was settling with Nicks. We all knew this wasn't going to be good, but I don't think anyone expected that nut to go nuclear.

Gosh, you are so right about this... I remember exactly where I was when I heard about the album, initially reported to be called "Buckingham McVie," and my reaction. I did like a full-body cringe. That name was such an obvious reference to "Buckingham Nicks," and Lord knows that would not sit well with Stevie. So on the one hand, I was thrilled to be getting new music from these guys. But on the other, I thought the same thing -- this is not going to drive her nuts (regardless, obviously, of her many public statements saying "why would anyone record new music anymore?"). I was nervously excited.

That of course was replaced with full-blown excited when the album came out and when I got to see them in Raleigh and DC. The Classic shows and Person of the Year performance all seemed relatively standard... I don't think Stevie gave two ****s about what Lindsey said in the press about the Classics, but it may have been used after the fact. Honestly, I remember at the time being more concerned about how mad he was that GYOW got all messed up at Classic East and thinking maybe he'd decide he was done with FM in lieu of the smaller stuff.

Looking at all of this in hindsight, I guess maybe I should have been prepared for what came next, but I definitely was not. Sadly I had more faith in Stevie (and the others) than I should have. She couldn't get past it and pulled the pin from the grenade.

I also kind of think this scenario of getting Lindsey out of the band had been in the back of her mind since the 2010/2011 Sheryl Crow fiasco and Micks pathetic playboy magazine interview. Lindsey put the kabosh on that idea and I don't think Stevie was too thrilled about that. Somehow they got it together long enough for the 2013 tour - but again, that (Sheryl Crow idea) was yet another decision that was vetoed (most likely) by Lindsey and if Lindsey walked, guess what? No Fleetwood Mac tour. Stevie's hands were tied at that time.

With Christine back in the picture and Mike Campbell a free agent again? No brainer, right?

What's really sad though is knowing what we know now:

1. They were ready to replace John when he got cancer, mid-tour! - can't lose out on that cash!
2. They were ready to replace Christine with Sheryl Crow

There really is no sense of loyalty amongst any of them except for the love that Lindsey clearly had/has for them and is clearly evident in the legal documents for the lawsuit last year.

I agree looking back. As hard as Lindsey was on Christine for leaving, he wanted to still protect her legacy. He wanted to function as a four piece and keep what was left in tact. Lindsey really cared about FMac after The Dance. I think his exit made him appreciate it more. SYW allowed him to create.

Probably because when Anthony Mason asked him about it last year, he said he would?

Yeah. I agree with you. But Lindsey does so few interviews (and given his health scare earlier this year, it's no surprise right now) that this is probably all the press has to go on. Plus, I don't really blame them -- Fleetwood Mac's crazy history lends itself to questions along these lines.

I don't doubt he still loves them, despite all of this. He's shown himself to be the (MUCH) bigger person throughout this mess.

I think there may be two likely outcomes here..

1) When this sham of a tour finishes and Mick doesn't need to give interviews and talk rubbish to sell tickets and Mike/Neil scatter back to their preferred endeavors, Mick will hold out an olive branch to Lindsey to try and get him back on-side for one final payday by the Rumours-Five (all is forgiven tour) before they are too old to perform.

or

2) Lindsey remains ghosted by the band for having the audacity to file a lawsuit against them for his share of the tour profits, remember how shabbily Bob Welch was treated after filing a lawsuit against the band.

Personally, I hope Lindsey swerves any future involvement with Mick and if able concentrates on his solo career or what makes him happy.

I'm more inclined to number 2. Not that I want it to happen, because I don't want to see him hurt but because I don't think they took the lawsuit very well. Again, not that I think what he did was wrong, but I don't know what the hell they were expecting for him to do, honestly. Let them win?

Stevie will never let him back.

especially considering they so far made *only* 49 M on this tour, according to Forbes (but maybe that's just this calendar year?), so if he got full 12 M he sued them for (personally i don't think he did, he said it was not really about the money or twisting the knife), the other 4 would have to scramble to divide the rest plus pay all the contractors, and would end up with way less than him.

This is just all so sad. I was just listening to Fireflies in the car today and its clear that Stevie once had a dedication to keeping the chain together. What the heck happened? Is she pulling a Taylor Swift and killing her older self?

I'm sorry, the old Stevie can't come to the phone right now. Why? Oh, cuz she's dead.

If LB ever reunited with these clowns, the effect would be worse on the legacy of the band's musical achievements than the original firing. I hope he has the sense to cut these people loose for life. They're done with him; he should be done with them. There is no "healing" in reuniting at this point. That's touchy-feely psychobabble in this situation.

Thank you for putting so nicely what I have been trying to say for so long. It won’t look good on Lindsey if he ever decides to go back. I doubt they ever ask him to, but if they do and he agrees.... well, let just say I’m gonna lose some respect for him. He doesn’t need them. What would you possibly need these clowns for? To keep on hurting you?

A reunion at this point, after lawsuits and so many hurtful words and actions would look too fake. No, thank you.

John or Mick will probably go first. John's certainly had his health issues, and Mick's a giant(giant douchebag, but still a giant, even without the douchebag attachment:lol: ), and giants don't usually live long(seriously, it's been documented). And I think Christine is starting to slip mentally.

Now, the Old Goat, you're right. That old thing will probably live forever. She's too busy patting herself on the back, to notice that she needs to....step off!

These days, for me, I only hope that Lindsey has many years ahead of him, in the arms of his family.

Exactly! I absolutely cringe at the very mention that there should be some sort of big "RUMOURS 5" final reunion! We've had that twice now - in 1997 and 2014/15. What the remaining 4 did to Lindsey in 2018 effectively ended that era. There is no more fertile ground left to till up. I would hope that even in the unlikely chance that Lindsey felt some sort of obligation or need for closure, his wife would kick his ass into realizing how pathetic it would look for him to ever go back to that mess.

I don’t know what Lindsey meant about Chris’ state and, to be perfectly honest, I do not think it is a comment that should have been shared outside of private correspondence. I think Lindsey was being, um, a tiny bit treacherous.

But let me ask you, if someone was slipping mentally wouldn't you start seeing them make mistakes on stage? Wouldn’t her playing get sloppy, her singing? I was just wondering.

The mind is so complex. When my father had his stroke the therapist told me to sing a song he liked. She said sometimes people can sing, Even if they can’t talk or write. And I watched that Glen Campbell documentary as he toured while struggling with dementia.

I didn't even know he released a version of this. I've only heard Don Henley's recording. It's credited as a co-write, but I was like 11 when it came out, so maybe it's more complicated? The live version from Hornsby is a nice take.

I'd at least like to see the five of them make peace while it's possible. Idk if that will happen, and I think a reunion is extremely unlikely.

Well, now that someone else mention it, I think Lindsey shouldn’t have shared his conversation with Christine and I’m not sure she liked it. He probably realized how wrong it was after it was done and it was already late. It’s like he was trying to prove to Stevie that not everybody agrees with her. It was a stupid move that only angered Christine and made her choose Stevie’s side.

She really spiraled out of control quickly after the passing of her mother. Barbara definitely kept that ego in check.

It's appalling that at this point in their lives, they chose to be this petty and hurtful to one another. I don't know how a group of people can invest so much time together over 4 decades and still have the appetite to do that to one another in their last sprint of productivity.

My daughter is only a month old. Over the weekend I was trying to calm her down and I tried playing the String Quartet Tribute to Rumours on my kindle. All I could think about besides my beautiful daughter, was how I will probably never see that band perform together again. Made me tear up 100%.

Fleetwood Mac saved from break-up after Lindsey Buckingham's departure by new frontman Neil Finn

Despite one of the biggest bust-ups in music history, Fleetwood Mac is keeping the dream alive with new frontman Neil Finn - and a world tour that’s filling stadiums.

The break-ups and make-ups have made Fleetwood Mac's story one of the most captivating in all of rock and roll. It began half a century ago when Neil Finn was still primary school.

"It's like they've always existed in my head because I was very young when they started," Neil tells Rahni Sadler. "Some things you get used to always being there. I do remember Albatross as a young boy. As a song, that seemed to come from a magical place, like a fairytale or something."

Fleetwood Mac was also an influence on Neil as a performer. "When I joined Split Enz, we were in England and they did a live performance of Rhiannon. They were at their peak. It was the wildest, most intense performance I think I've seen. They were all just so in it, so vibrant. We all looked at each other and went, 'Wow.'"

Neil may be the latest addition to the Fleetwood Mac line-up, but he’s not the first by a long shot.

Christine McVie was a very early recruit. She left a group called Chicken Shack in 1970. For the most part, Christine shuns the limelight, but on the eve of the Australian tour, she agreed to a rare interview.

"I wanted to spend more time with my husband," Christine explains. "We were meeting each other on the doorstep - he was going to Germany, I was just coming home. We never saw each other."

Four years later, American Lindsey Buckingham was offered a gig as a guitarist - but he wouldn’t sign on unless Fleetwood Mac also took his singer-songwriter girlfriend Stevie Nicks.

"Lindsey said, 'She’s coming too, so either you take both of us or I can’t join your band,'" Stevie recalls. "The rest is history - and to be continued."

With fame came new pressures on all of the relationships in the band. The spectacularly successful 1977 album Rumours was the product of catastrophic breakups. Christine and John McVie separated, as did Stevie and Lindsey. Even Mick split with his wife.

The couples wrote about their experiences. The tension played out on and off-stage every night.

"You have to avoid certain rooms during the time of the breakups," explains Christine. "I think Mick was getting divorced as well. There were certain rooms you could go in and you knew you'd be safe, other rooms you avoided like that plague."

Christine McVie wrote one of her big hits, You Make Loving Fun, about a member of the crew she was seeing after she broke up with John.

"Fortunately I didn't have to look at him when I sang it, because he was off to the side. He knew who it was written about, and I suppose it was difficult at first."

"I adore John and he adores me, and we have fought just because we've had to work it through. I mean, Stevie and Lindsey just couldn't unfortunately. It was fire versus fire with them, but John and I just handled it in a much more humorous way. He's very dear to me."

At the peak of their fame in the late 70s, they were the biggest band in the world, and they admit to enjoying all the trappings of fame. These days, however, things are a little more subdued.

"[It's] almost like a kindergarten now," laughs Christine. "Perrier water only. We're clean, clean, clean. Everybody. Those days are gone."

Through the decades, Fleetwood Mac continued to tour and record hit albums, despite an ever-changing line-up. Lindsey Buckingham left the band for a while, as did Stevie Nicks. They eventually returned in 1997.

Christine McVie got tired of airports and suitcases and quit to live a quieter life in the UK. Stevie was heartbroken.

"You look into somebody’s eyes and you can’t say, 'Oh you can’t do that,'" says Stevie. "She was serious and she was going home, and that was it."

But after 15 years, Christine got bored with country living and made a triumphant return.

"[I had] terrible stage fright," Christine admits. "The thing about stage fright, as soon as you hear the audience response, the adrenaline kind of soothes any kind of fear. You just realise there's so many people there that want to see you and want to enjoy themselves with you."

Fleetwood Mac was together again, and seemed destined to spend their golden years onstage as a family. But in April last year, Lindsey Buckingham was fired from the band.

They claim that Lindsey couldn’t agree on tour dates, but Lindsey says he was told that Stevie was angry at him for smirking at her during an awards acceptance speech.

"It did have to happen," explains Mick Fleetwood. "It’s no secret that it was a challenge on Lindsey’s part, Stevie’s part and sometimes within the band. That is not off the radar, and Lindsey would acknowledge that. We weren’t happy, and there were things that happened that lead to that decision that we acknowledged as a band. It was heavy and sad, and we thought that that was it, in terms of this band continuing."

I have nothing but respect and I love the guy, but time moves on," says Christine. "Things can’t be sorted. It was something that just couldn’t be worked out, and so we had to move on."

Mick Fleetwood invited Neil to meet the band, and right away they hit it off.

"We have a lot of fun," claims Mick. "What we see here is truly a lovely friendship. It's been a joy, and I think that's a lovely word to use."

Still, Neil admits that such a big change in a beloved band is a huge thing for fans to get used to.

"I think of it through their eyes," says Neil. "I go, 'God, this must be strange, watching me up here with Fleetwood Mac.' It is strange [but] good."

"If you think you're going to end up being able to live your life in a little contained box where all the things add up the same every day, then I think you're not getting the most out of life. If you're open to surprises and opportunities when they come and you can see the potential in them - which is how it felt to me - then that's living, and that's keeping a band together ultimately as well."

Fleetwood Mac is well-known for its tumultuous romantic and professional relationships - often very publicly. But that was before the band called in Neil Finn.

Fleetwood Mac has been entertaining the world for more than fifty years. Their fans span three generations and fill the biggest stadiums. While Neil Finn’s arrival has been well-received, he doesn't strictly consider himself a lifelong member of the band.

"I wouldn't want to put a date on it because I am the youngest in the band. I've been the youngest in the band before, with Split Enz. It meant I had to go and get the sandwiches at lunchtime," Neil laughs. "They haven't put me on that yet as the youngest."

"[I'm] really enjoying my spell in here, and I have Crowded House like a lovely old car up on blocks in the garage. You can just get it out with a bit of a tinker for a spin."

There’s one Crowded House classic that gets a spin every night with Fleetwood Mac.

'I have the joy of hearing Stevie join me on it towards the end. It's a really nice moment.'
"It is amazing and really gratifying to find that the audiences everywhere have been singing to Don't Dream It's Over," says Neil. "It's definitely a song that has crossed a lot of boundaries, and there doesn't seem to be any strangeness in having a foreign item in the set. I have the joy of hearing Stevie join me on it towards the end. It's a really nice moment."

"It used to be cigarette lighters, now it's phone lights," Christine says fondly. "They love it, and they love him."

When Fleetwood Mac tours Down Under soon, it’s possible there’ll be a few more Neil Finn songs thrown in by this much-loved adopted Aussie.

"Isn't it nice to think that you've been invited into someone's family because they're so fond of you," Neil explains. "That's what it feels like in Australia. It feels like I've been invited into Australian homes over the years and we've shared some pretty intimate times, so that's going to carry onto the stage I think."

Yeah, that whole part about her getting him fired, because SHE NEVER WANTS TO BE ON THE SAME STAGE AS HIM. Yeah, that'll pass.:lol::lol:

He would stab himself in the eye socket with a knife before saying that Bob saved FMAC.

Well he already said that:
After a few weeks, we began to get letters from Jeremy explaining what had happened; while we still hadn't gotten over the way he had left, both John and I would have taken him back if he had wanted it. Chris was much less enthusiastic about this, rightly so in retrospect. But neither Chris nor Danny wanted to continue without a third writer, and Clifford Davies had booked a British club tour beginning June 4, which gave us about a month to try and find a new world-class guitarist who could sing and write.
Judy Wong found him.
Bob Welch saved Fleetwood Mac. We hired him without an audition.

Without Bob, the band probably doesn't make it past 1975. He was the one who was at the forefront of saving/retaining the band's name then later moving from England to LA. It's unforgivable how Mick, John and Christine treated him after his departure. They all owe him a debt of gratitude. Then of course now this whole situation with Lindsey. Guess we all should have seen it coming.

This interview aired on June 30th on a show called Sunday Night Stories. There is a video in the link at the bottom but it won't play for me.

"Lindsay said, 'She’s coming too, so either you take both of us or I can’t join your band,'" Stevie recalls.

Thanks for this!

I couldn't get either of the video clips in the article to work either. I was curious to be able to hear Christine's tone of voice, and demeanor, when she says the bit about Lindsey "I have nothing but respect and I love the guy, but time moves on," says Christine. "Things can’t be sorted. It was something that just couldn’t be worked out, and so we had to move on."

It sort of smacks of "we've moved on, so why can't he just move on". Maybe it doesn't play that way when you can hear her say.

I believe her stance changed because in ‘87 she still had a bit of new music in her, and she needed him to make it sound good. And she still thought she could keep him for herself when she wanted him romantically. Or had some free time and no one else was available.

This time around, she has no music in her so he’s not needed, and she knows she will never have him romantically now. As much as she tossed him aside numerous times, she’s known since The Dance that she is no longer needed by him. And goodness knows she’s tried to make it seem like she has him still, all the stupid comments about his kids being like her kids, they’ll be with each other when they die, blah blah blah. She’s so full of it.

I bet people had the same reaction in 87' when they literally kicked the living sh*t out of each other. Stevie even said "my family will kill you."

People are reflective and forgiving. I don't think its out of the realm of possibility.Perhaps not. Both were emotionally charged splits with animosity all round (1987 was more flagrant, it seems to me).

It took ten years for the band to reunite after the 1987 split. Those ten years were filled with a lot of emotional crud that didn’t seem to want to get resolved—for example, Lindsey’s cold, uncomfortable presence at the Clinton Inaugural press conference, or Stevie’s 1994 radio interview comments about Lindsey.

So far, this split—which is still less than two years on—is filled with the same signs. Nobody on either side appears to be in any sort of mood for reuniting. Ten years isn’t a universal axiom for healing, but it gives you an idea of the psychic dust that would need to settle before the people involved would start to feel that they’d like to play with one another again. In 1987, the band members were all 40 or 45 years old, so ten years down the road was feasible. A Fleetwood Mac with 50-year-olds was no big deal. This time, the prospect of a Fleetwood Mac with 80- and 85-year-olds is an appalling stretch of unlikelihood.

There’s also the cumulative effect of multiple splits at work. Like an earthquake-retrofitted building that gets more precarious after two large quakes, the second breakup weakens the integrity of the foundation more than the first did.

And in 1987 a new Fleetwood Mac album with the Rumours five could and did sell millions (despite her very slight participation in the making of it)So Lindsey was still very much needed for his skills. The instant he left their twelve years of big hits stopped as abruptly as it has begun when he joined. So again it was all about the money .

And hits are a thing of the past, regardless of the producer. So they have proved they don't need him to tour.

The only thing I've noticed, (which I've never seen on any other FM tour) : The lowering of ticket prices. My brother said Cleveland had a flash sale of really great seats selling for $99 a piece. And when he checked a week before they were $225.

Yeah I can't see them ever getting back together. I saw them in Pittsburgh 3rd row and enjoyed the show but yeah the sound was turned down way too low. I didn't even need to use my earplugs. I remember seeing them in Toronto on the Say You Will Tour and forgot my earplugs and was almost crying during Come because it was so loud it was really hurting my ears. Ahh that show was so good though I got Lindsey to sign my ticket. I always loved being on his side during concerts.

August 7, 1987.
We gathered at Christine's house, where from the start feelings ran high. No one wanted to face the humiliation of a canceled tour it was like a hideous specter from our distant past except for Lindsey, who just wanted out. The meeting was civil for about five minutes. Stevie felt devastated. She took Lindsey's rejection of us personally. "You can't do this," she said. "Why are you doing this?"
Lindsey apologised. "Look, I'm sorry. I just can't do any more. I've given twelve years of my life to this band! I've done it all arranged, produced, played guitar, sang. I just can't... hack it..."
///////////
I looked over at Stevie, who was brushing back tears. "Lindsey," she said, "you've broken my ****ing heart on this."
Fleetwood: My Life and Adventures in Fleetwood Mac. Mick Fleetwood with Stephen Davis. 1990

“Last January, Fleetwood Mac made the decision to continue to tour without me,” Buckingham said in a statement to Rolling Stone regarding the suit. “I remain deeply surprised and saddened, as this decision ends the beautiful 43-year legacy we built together. Over the last eight months, our many efforts to come to an agreement have unfortunately proved elusive. I’m looking forward to closure, and will always remain proud of all that we created, and what that legacy represents.”
Rolling Stone magazine, October 11, 2018.

Well, I do agree 100% with this 2018 Lindsey quote, but I guess (and no matter how accurate was Mick in his 1990 book, I think it reflects the actual Lindsey state of mind at that moment) he didn't care about Fleetwood Mac legacy in 1987.

So more than one member changed his/her point of view over the years. Anyway as Meryl Streep said in "Ricki" movie: "You know, the crowd loves that drama and tension. Yeah? That was what made Fleetwood Mac really popular."

Seems about right. Most 38 year olds aren’t at the “legacy” stage as compared to a guy closing in on 70.

Stevie Nicks, July 2013: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIbnm2z3Atk

2:11: "It is, in many ways, one of the greatest love stories ever told. It’s like one of those great romances of the century."
2:27: "It’s a relationship that spans centuries and has come out on top.”
18:44: “Sometimes I see the boy I first met when he was seventeen. And I haven’t seen him since we first joined Fleetwood Mac."

Quotes like this always make me roll my eyes at stevie. She’s like the Trump of Fleetwood Mac when she says this utter BS. It isn’t even remotely one of the greatest love stories ever told. Give me a break.

Yeah ..she has said that Lindsey is not even "the great love of her life".She has got some competition as the Trump of Fleetwood Mac though. Have you ever listened to the decades spanning contradictory BS. that has spewed out of Mick's maw?

Yeah ..she has said that Lindsey is not even "the great love of her life".

I clearly remember I had a People magazine, can't remember the year though I think, not sure, it was before The Dance era, with a short Stevie Nicks article talking about Mick. Ande she said she had had 3 true loves, and Mick Fleetwood was one of them.

I thought Mick was kind of a brief romance. But my point is that, though she didn't mention the other 2 names, I believed at that moment that Lindsey was one of them.

Again, points of view change with the time. And about the "one of the greatest love stories ever told" quote, I think somewhere Cleopatra and Mark Anthony (even Burton and Taylor) are saying WHAT????!!!!

Supposedly Joe Walsh was her one true love above all others.
Of course their romance took place at the very height of her cocaine and booze meltdown so ....

I beg to differ:

Boy meets girl.
Boy and girl date, but not monogamously.
Boy and girl have rocky relationship interrupted by a breakup during which girl gets together with another boy.
Boy and girl stay together despite turmoil so as not to deep-six lucrative job offer.
Boy and girl breakup acrimoniously.
Boy writes in publicly-released song that "shacking up" is all the girl wants to do.
Boy and girl hardly speak to one another and have chilly working relationship for ten years.
Boy quits.
Girl and boy violently attack one another.
Girl warns boy that her family will kill him if anything happens to her.
Boy and girl don't speak for ten years, then reunite professionally for the money.
Boy and girl feign affection for one another for 20 years while despising one other just beneath the surface.
Girl stabs boy in back and stages coup to oust him from the band to which he's devoted much of his professional life.
Boy has heart attack and loses his voice.

It's the classic fairytale.

Well if there is one thing in Mick's first book that I know is 100% true is: The love-hate saga between those two will never end.

Well, for some people it’s easier to believe Nicks did what she did because she loooooves Lindsey instead of believing she simply hates him. The former puts her under a sympathetic light.:shrug:

I'll never forget Christine's quote on the BBC Tracks of My Years 2013: Which completely ruined the SHIPPERS' fantasy.

She had picked 'Races are Run' for one of her tracks. She then talked about how amazing B/N were as a duo and their tightness and togetherness as a couple. She then commented, "Not in any other way these days. hahaha"

And, it confirmed what I already knew.

I also wondered if she had to have been talking to FM at that point. Of course, she was talking w/ Mick as well.

I suspect Mick warned her that the hate was still brewing more than ever. The birth of this break-up of FMAC 5 is due to that hatred. And then $$$$$$

That was 2013. I didn't perceived any hate in 2005

Yeah, I still don't buy that just because they worked together on a few projects meant there wasn't hatred brewing.

Christine and Lindsey did a whole album together and look what happened.

I always assumed those top quotes were about Fleetwood Mac in general and the band relationships, not her and Lindsey in particular. At least that's how the editing of the video made it look.

I agree. Hard to picture him with vodka. I think of vodka as a "lady's drink", and it's also usually the last step for hard core, broken alcoholics(because it's the cheapest thing you can drink)..

I've always pictured him drinking whiskey straight.

Thus showing us that they're all whores, in one way or another. Zero integrity.

Isn't Brett the ONE who told them no, and stuck with Lindsey, when the Old Goat fired him? My friends, THAT'S integrity. Honor over money.

I had been wondering whether Brett turned them down or vice-versa. Does anyone know for sure?

Also wondering about Neale Heywood: Did Lindsey pare down the Buckingham McVie band to exclude him from the second leg of the tour, or was he part of the whole tour? In any case I noted that, while Neale carried on with FM, Brett did not.
