I won't listen so can you explain what happened? I'm sure the audience knew what they were doing?

I haven’t listened to all of her acceptance speech.
But I thought she was referring to her solo band, the one she tours with.
Waddy, Jimmy, Sharon, Lori.
As I say I haven’t heard all of it (way too long)....so I could of missed
something..

I don't see the problem with "my band". What else could she say, it is HER band, as it is Christine's, Mick's and John's band. They all own the b(r)and.

That’s clearly not the problem here. Her band is not still together and that’s because of her, right? She was taking a dig at Lindsey.

Christine and Mick confirmed it so there’s nothing much to say.

She sounded crazy. We’re used to reading between her lines. Besides, we have heard most of her anecdotes already and we can easily fill in the information gaps between her inchoate sentences, but what did it sound like to the rest of the audience? Meandering doesn’t describe it.

And death to all potheads.

It may not be in the configuration some here might wish for, but the band IS still together. Still active, still touring, still hopefully recording someday, still in existence. As far as "my band" goes, one doesn't assume that everytime you hear someone say "my church", "my office", "my school"; that the person literally owns those things. Goodness, give the search for evil intent in every comment a rest.

Well said, Feather Blade. That was how I took it, too. Freud would have a field day on this forum, the way every remark or comment is analyzed by some people just looking for a nasty intent. Glad to see that none of the numerous articles mentioned it, because they knew it was much ado about nothing.

Reminds me of when Blondie was inducted, and one of the former members asked Debbie Harry (during his speech) if he could join the band when they performed, and Debbie said something like "my band has already rehearsed" and he had a hissy fit and responded "Oh, it's your band now?"

No, that's just our little Stevie. She was just drunk
on her ego.

Last night when I heard her say "my band...", I thought of
making a thread here about it. But then I knew I wouldn't
need to because someone else would.

I'm embarrassed for her every time she makes a speech.

I don't read a lot into that particular comment (as someone already stated, people say "my church" etc), however, I agree that I don't recall any of the others referring to it as "my band." It's classic Stevie... everything revolves around her and her perspective. This particular night WAS about her (and the other inductees) and so she had the right to be giddy (though it was embarrassing for me to watch what I saw). But I won't slam her for being excited on a night like that.

(Though the fact that this was about her solo work and not FM also makes the comment all the more unnecessary and does inevitably twist the knife.)

The speech was entertaining in the way it was expected to be entertaining--a rambling mess of improvised stuff. I bear no ill will on her honor, nor on her calling FM "her band" (they've all done that).

But I DID have some problems with the speech:

1. Lindsey is only mentioned in a passive-aggressively demeaning way: the pot smoking boyfriend who stayed home and worked on music while she waited on tables. (And in Harry's intro, his tenure as Fritz's bassist is mentioned but not his exceptional guitar abilities that developed post-Fritz.)

2. Waddy Watchell isn't mentioned at all.

3. For a woman who has rightfully made a lot of noise about her being the first woman to be inducted twice, I bristled at the end of her speech when she spoke of her woman manager and how hard it is for her to take direction from anyone, "especially another girl."

4. Sandy Stewart is not mentioned.

5. Mike Campbell is not mentioned.

6. Rick Knowels (sp?) is not mentioned.

7. In terms of producers, only Jimmy Iovine is mentioned. No mention of, say, Dave Stuart.

8. Rulebook: sleep with men who will take you places.

……………..

I feel everyone of Stevie's albums has value so I was also disappointed to see that only songs from her first two albums were performed.

I actually came in to drop those lyrics myself.

And I among those repulsed by her use of the phrase.

Lindsey's point is that he will do whatever it takes to keep the band, the fireflies, together. (That's the SENTIMENT of the song.)

When she refers to it as "MY band" in the context of all that has happened, it does it indeed sound like a coup. Because! It is no longer "her band" as we knew it (the 5); it's now quite literally "HER band".

8. Rulebook: sleep with men who will take you places. All good points. But I wouldn't have expected her necessarily to mention Sandy, Campbell, Rick, Dave Stewart, or any of her producers besides the guys who totally got her started: Danny and Paul, who formed Modern primarily to get Stevie started, and Jimmy, who wasn't only her first solo producer but her career sine qua non. The other guys, like Waddy, played major roles but it's really Danny, Paul, and Jimmy who created "Stevie Nicks" the solo act. They were the project managers when the project was launched. I suppose she could have rambled off a list at the end of her speech of a bunch of these other guys (and of course women like Sheryl, without whom there'd probably not be a Shangri La album and tour). But she yacked ad hoc for so long that there just didn't seem to be an opportunity.

I thought her anecdotal "speech" was everything others have said: airheaded and incoherent and fun. (In fact, as is typical for me these days, I like hearing her talk a lot more than I like hearing her sing.) But I don't think it was even her best (or near her best) rambling-style speech. While she's speaking, she seems to vaguely recall having mentioned many of these stories before and so she ellides them almost subconsciously until they make no sense if you aren't already aware of what she's referring to. I would imagine that a huge portion of that audience (which was there to see the Cure and Def Leppard and Roxy Music) was completely lost.

I see what you mean, but Dave Stewart is largely responsible for resuscitating her solo career and helping her "brand" herself as the scatterbrained witch we love to see. I'm surprised she didn't recognize him for that.

If she's going to mention Tom Petty, she might as well mention the Petty guitarist who helped her co-write a number of her solo songs AND who is working with her present mothership band. And Sandy Stewart? Well, she's a woman--and since this was supposed to be a woman-positive speech, it would have been cool to recognize one of her successful collaborators.

Frankly, I was thrilled she even acknowledged Lindsey at all, even if it was just in passing. I didn't think her mention of Lindsey was passive aggressive, maybe dismissive is the more appropriate term. But I had no problem with Harry Styles or his speech, including his mention of Lindsey. Steve's induction was not the place where anyone was going to bring up Lindsey's incredible guitar prowess. And I don't recall Stevie saying in her speech Lindsey stayed home smoking pot, but in all fairness I was bored by her speech and may have missed it. If she did say that in her speech, that would be a more appropriate example of passive aggressive.

I really agree with #3. Saying 'girl' instead of 'woman' irritated me, plus the context in which she said it.

I guess the fans weren't mentioned, either. What a surprise.

Yes, the people who contributed the most, each in their own way, to her solo career are:

Paul Fishkin
Danny Goldberg
(they together with her formed Modern Records....and Paul especially encouraged her that it was ok to do this outside of FM and they wouldn't get all mad)

Jimmy Iovine

Howard Kaufman -- he negotiated in a VERY hardass way to get her the most money ALWAYS ... I recall LB commenting on the planning of one of their tours (I think post Chris leaving) and saying "You know Howard will always take care of Stevie".... he was also the one who always took her to task when she p*ssed away too much money and worked hard to make sure she had long term investments and planned for the future when her own inclination was to party it all away)

Sharon and Lori -- they ARE, with Waddy, a MAJOR factor in her solo "sound"

Tom Petty -- for giving her her first hit, along with MIKE who also gave her lots of tracks to write to when her own limited musical well dried up

Really all the musicians on her first albums-especially Benmont and Roy Bittan who worked very hard on helping her arrange her songs and turn her plinking piano playing into real songs (Benmont has talked about how Jimmy asked him when prepping for BD to go sit with her and play her songs and work with her on them to get them into a form they could present to the rest of the band)

Karen-- I know she's controversial with a lot of fans, but she gets PAID to be the "bad cop" so Stevie doesn't have to...she has kept this woman going for a very, very long time... who else recalls the interview where Stevie couldn't figure out how to turn the lights on or the tv and bellowed, "KAREN!!!" Like her or not, she's the one that actually manages day to day life for her and works with her managers etc to get her where she needs to be in order to have any success...

Herbie for being the key architect in her visual style and image.

And oh yeah, all those fans who plunked down hard-earned cash for her albums and concerts.. without whom she'd be singing as she cleaned toilets.

Who knows who else......

But she'll want to think she's so genius it was all her.

now it's hers.

now she gloats. her band is now complete.

instead of moving on after winning, she is still stuck on sticking it to him. he was just some bassist in Fritz, right? (apparently his singing in that band never happened! remember when Xavier or somebody said they got Stevie in as a singer but she didn't have the range to sing half of their songs so Lindsey had to sing them?). lucky for him Stevie got him outta Fritz to start Buckingham Nicks.

loved the huge cheers from the audience when Harry mentioned Lindsey Buckingham!

ah and the cleaning lady vs pothead story keeps getting more and more extreme. now it became - lucky for Lindsey, Richard & co, at least they were working on the music so she couldn't charge them for cleaning her own house. ;) and she couldn't be bothered by actually working on music - you know, like talking about bars? how stupid and boring! when there are bars outside she could go to and hang out with people!

looks like Harry being there as an inroad to a whole another huge audience quickly backfired by the NSYNC reference.

Stevie was a poet. Her talent was creating porous words and phrases that could be woven around your emotions and her voice could express those emotions. Even when she didn’t write the words, her voice made them hers and lent meaning where none would otherwise exist.

As Lindsey said, she had an innate sense of rhythm. She knew when to start and when to stop. It’s not a small talent. It’s a great one and it is a genius of sorts.

But she’s always been a self-centered, ditzy, liar and the bad traits grew and overshadowed any good ones she once possessed. At the same time, her talent ebbed. Perhaps, the two things are connected. I don’t say her abilities are completely gone. I thought the IYD album was largely a success and maybe she’s capable of more. But today, I look at her and see the same menace that devoured Dorian Gray on the inside, while his exterior remained unmarred.

Yes, that was a problem. Although Stevie has always been an old-fashioned sexist. It’s her generation, I suppose.

for a woman who has been presenting herself as a trailblazer for women and as a feminist, she had a perfect platform to further women’s causes. instead she poopoo-ed women in both her speech, and by her choice of male presenter. plus she chose to duet with 2 men. it was a woman, Sheryl Louis, who took her into stratosphere of popularity in the last few years.

Janet did it right in her speech.

Well, that’s where the age difference between Stevie and Janet shows. I mean it was best embodied when Madonna kissed Britney and Christina and Stevie was appalled. She’s from a different era.

Agreed, I have always seen her as a self absorbed ditz with borderline personality, it is even in the song lyrics. The giant ego and the ultimate firing of Buckingham actually are no surprise to me. But it doesn't hit me in the feels like it does many here.

What hits me is the way it was done. And maybe that's the self absorbed part that you mention. But, not to even acknowledge his calls, emails, or even olive branch to make things right.... Just cruel. Made my skin crawl a bit.

That was I was always been saying:

1. You want to kick him out of the band because you can't stand working with him anymore? Fine. But if you think what you're doing is correct, then why the lies at the beginning? Why the cold shoulder? Why ignoring his calls, his emails? I think after all these years, he deserves an explanation. Or they think he doesn't?

2. And once everything is out in the open, why the constant need to bash him, to say things like "we're happier now that we have ever been", "my band is still together"? After all these years, you already got rid of him. So stop twisting the knife while he's already on the floor trying to stand up again. :distress:

I honestly don't care if her fans think the band's behavior toward Lindsey is "what many bands do" because that's not true. Trying to diminish what they have done and trying to sweep everything under the rug won't work. Their behavior towards Lindsey, aside from the firing, is despicable.

After seeing Def Leppard's speech last Friday at the RRHOF, talking about their brotherhood and their friendship with Brian May, after seeing Keith Richards' comments about Mick Jagger's health condition, you can't help but feel pity for what Fleetwood Mac has become. :distress:

Exactly. Just because some bands treat each other poorly doesn't make it right. There are plenty of other bands can treat each other with respect.

It's like friendships and relationships. Some people treat each other poorly, and some don't. But just because lot's of people treat others poorly, it doesn't mean that that behavior is ok. I sometimes wonder if the people who keep chiming in about "get over it" or "it's people we don't know so who cares" or "doesn't impact me so I don't give a rats ass," do these people think it's ok to treat others in their lives this way? Because they certainly want to give Stevie, et al., a pass on this horrendous behavior. Behavior which keeps sinking to new lows. And as a previous MEGA fan, I can't get away from my disappointment in them. As I would be if they had behaved this way to anyone in the band, not just Lindsey.:(

The giant ego and the ultimate firing of Buckingham actually are no surprise to me.Some people saw those qualities all along. Was it Stephen Holden or another Rolling Stone critic who, back in 1981 reviewing Bella Donna, asked, "How can somebody so hip also be so incredibly silly?"? And Robert Hilburn, reviewing the Mac's spectacularly good concert in Irvine CA in 1982 for the L.A. Times, said of Stevie: "She has even shed some (though far from all) of the narcissistic aura that has made her something of a caricature in rock." My mind fills in with all these characterizations of Stevie—remember John Swenson's Rolling Stone review of the band's Madison Square Garden stop in 1977? Something about Stevie's stage business being literary in a bad way, but adding that "she gets away with her devices more often than not" because she "has undeniable charisma."

And then there's her singing voice—she picked up bits and pieces of style from Tom Petty, Brenda Lee, Jackie Wilson, and maybe even Ray Charles, but most of it is really and truly her own and sounds like no one else. That's her genius, in my opinion, that and her onstage (and offstage) character with its otherworldly traits, a combination of a Greek nymph or demiurge and a decadent nineteenth-century writer. But that appeal has always been elusive and youth-bound; it got sillier and more awkward as she grew older. For several years now, it's felt desperate. That's why newspaper writers have many of them likened her to Norma Desmond or Miss Havisham or even Sylvia Browne or some other drifting psychic mess. She's being feted these days solely because she's quaint and she has longevity. All these younger musicians who adore her never mention a recent song. None of her recent songs have had any impression on people or on the culture (although that's nothing to blame her for because it's true of millions of old stars like her).

Her period of magical songwriting where everything seemed to come together ended sometime in the mid 1980s.. there have been some sporadic moments since then. Her work during her prime and most especially with Fleetwood Mac was sublime and unrepeatable by her or anyone else since then IMHO. It is that handful of songs that keeps the younger artists coming back year after year.

The bolded part nailed it. I realize it sounds (and probably is) ageist, but there is no denying the difference in effect watching her late 70s/early 80s stage presence and now. It is completely understandable that things change after 40 years -- of course, she's 40 years older! However, SHE needs to be self-aware enough to stop milking the same stage show she's been doing for 40 years. CHANGE WITH THE TIMES. You look RIDICULOUS in that same lace shawl, black Victorian whatever dress and platforms now. You look RIDICULOUS "twirling" like a hunchback clunking around in those platforms with your ankles about to cave inwards.

She was magnetic back then.... now she looks ridiculous and embarrassing. No self awareness in the slightest despite being completely focused on nothing but herself. She is a parody of her younger self... as if I'm watching a comedian make fun of her on SNL only she really is the joke.

I have known that for years myself . I think my fandom even predates yours since I recall you mentioning that you came on because of her Tusk songs. She had likely wanted Lindsey out for years and waited for the right moment. This is why my disdain for the Mick and the McVies is even greater. They chose pure greed over creativity when they gave Lindsey the boot.

Except for the foot gear, I think her stage attire is fine and timeless. Come on, it was odder for her to wear the shawls when she was a young woman than it is now. Just as she told us was her plan all along, she managed to choose a costume that would age with her. Unlike Cher who is flitting around in flesh-colored body suits trimmed in her old sequined Bob Mackie designs. Yuck.

With Stevie, it's the twirling, kicks and GDW dance that need to stop, imo.

Fair points. Yes, I think if the twirling and ridiculous dances/arm motions were to stop, then her outfits wouldn't seem so silly. It's her actions that are so embarrassing. Though I really have a problem with her platforms. She can't walk in them; I remember she told a friend of mine on the 2014-2015 tour that she can barely walk in them, that they are extremely painful, that's why she has to take the breaks DURING the sets, etc. She even told her that "there was no way she can tour again" because of how worn out she gets on stage. THEN WHY WEAR THEM?? *face palm* Just dumb.

I decided to speak from my heart and not from a teleprompter, and in my excitement I forgot to thank one of my best friends since 1971. I am very surprised she didn't thank the fans who stuck by her thru the bad days. Writing a speech would have been a very good idea. How hard is it to thank the people who have helped you in your solo career? She talked only about Fleetwood Mac and the start of Bella Donna.

If she had spoken from her heart, she wouldn't have forgotten about Waddy and many people linked to her solo career. She lost a great opportunity because she can't let it go. She used her solo induction speech as a way to rub Lindsey in his face (once again) that she won and he lost. And she will continue doing it again and again.

FOR the record, the whole reason I used that word is that there was a band playing at a bar I go to, called "So and so and the Twat Biscuits". It was on posters everywhere, on Facebook in multiple posts(with no one bitching about it), so perhaps you're being a bit hypersensitive here. you and i probably agree on way more than we disagree - you are a very smart woman, and know exactly what i'm saying. fans do not equal general audiences. and those general audiences paid for the legendary band singalongs, not to see the "new band" - they can't care less who is in the band.

now many chiffs who normally don't go see FM and always hated LB, fueled by Stevie's constant bashing of him over decades, did go see "the new band" - that's true. fans of the band are different than fans of a single member of the band.

I am not a chiff, I clearly see Stevie's narcissistic personality disorder which has been on full display for decades. But it is entertaining nonetheless.

I do not hate Lindsey, I am just totally indifferent to him and do not miss him.

When Lindsey was on stage with them, he often reminded those masses that there was something else to admire—and their awe surprised them. My love, respect and admiration for Stevie, Christine, John and Mick has gone. I can't and won't let my disdain allow me to stop listening to the songs Lindsey either created or produced though. He is the biggest reason Fleetwood Mac got so big. Take him out of the equation and who knows where the band goes. The same goes for Bob Welch, Billy, Danny and the other members of the band. They made fantastic music and I won't let the mistreatment of Lindsey by the band prevent me from enjoying the others' music. It's not their fault that they're associated with these abominable turncoats.

I never thought there'd come a day when I couldn't bare to listen to the music of Fleetwood Mac and/or Stevie Nicks but that day has come.

3 chapters into Ken Caillat's book and so far I haven't seen any behavior from Stevie that resembles what she's like now. The only thing that really stood out to me was the part where he said she believed she had magical powers and was chanting to the music. I had a friend in high school who was a witch and she said the main motto of witches is "Do whatever you want." I could see that kind of mentality leading to these types of decisions. But I feel like that's an incredibly large assumption to make as I'm sure most witches would never do what she has done. There must be something more and I intend to find out. *grabs magnifying glass*

you know what i don't get? the woman is obviously not doing well, having a bad flu and who knows what else as they needed to cancel all these dates. yet her fans on these boards make up complaint threads about other posters while nobody made a thread to wish her well. if you care about the woman, or if you are just a normal human, i would think you'd want her to live and be healthy. i hope she's actually getting better and wish all the health to Stevie.

Her fans take on her qualities. So it shouldn't surprise you. Selfishness is a learned behavior. (mostly)

I guess it's not surprising that Stevie said "MY band is still together." The current iteration of Fleetwood Mac is the one SHE created - the one sans Lindsey Buckingham that Mick Fleetwood, its leader in name only, has meekly allowed her to establish and dominate. It is indeed HER band, and it is "still together" after a whole year!

It makes me think about what she did back during the Tusk years. She and Mick (while it makes for a great story of rock and roll) It's a huge violation to be in love with someone, break up and then sleep with someone both parties know... And then hide it.

Please. They may not do it here, but believe me they are wishing her well. Once I was in some kind of Stevie circle group. I mean, I didn’t seek it out, but when I came back here in 2007, someone invited me into it. So, they circulated this e-card for people to sign for Stevie’s birthday and I just quietly ignored it. But the head of the circle kept reminding me that the deadline was coming. Finally, I said I didn’t Want to sign it and she practically had a nervous breakdown. I am not exaggerating. And she went around telling people that I “wouldn’t even sign Stevie’s birthday card.”

And back then, it didn’t have to do with Stevie. I loved Stevie then. I just think it’s stupid to wish celebrities a Happy Birthday. I don’t wish Lindsey Happy Birthday. The only one I wished happy birthday is Bob Welch and that was only because he was here on the board. And he promptly told me that it wasn’t his birthday. He said that the birthday that is listed for him is the wrong one because he lied about his birthday in an interview. Why I do not know. But that kind of solidified for me the fact that you should not say happy birthday to celebrities.

Anyway, don’t worry. Stevie’s fans wish her a speedy recovery. They have probably been sending her blood donations, just in case she needs them.

But everyone said they didn’t really hide it and that it was immediately obvious. So, I don’t think they went behind Lindsey’s back. They were probably having sex right under his nose.

It reminds me of when Stevie said that Lindsey got so jealous because Don Henley sent her flowers. Lindsey says he doesn’t remember anything like that. Stevie would have you think that she tried to conceal the flowers from Lindsey but the reality is she probably took the thorns and personally pushed them into his side. Then, wrote a song about it.

$he wrote words. Over a F chord. Not sure that qualifies as a song. Maybe poetry?

Well, if you think about it, maybe she was taking a dig at Lindsey's fans, that are saying all the time that this incarnation of FM won't last because creativity was gone the day she fired Lindsey.
Maybe she was trying to send a message to us: "see, we could make it this far without Lindsey".
Too bad flu ruined her beautiful project. :D

I read some teen fans on Twitter offering their organs or their family's lives in exchange for Stevie's recovery. Very cult-like. I love Lindsey but my family goes first. Very twisted minds indeed.:shocked:

I can think of a few things I'd like to offer her.

But if I sent her some of those things, I'm certain I'd be violating some federal postal laws.

Anyone ever seen Pink Flamingos, where these people send Divine a dog turd in the mail?:lol::lol:

A poet indeed. I don’t deny the greatness of Sable on Blond.

Lindsey says even when he met her at the Christian Youth function, she gave him her songs and already considered herself a poet. Since he knew that at 16 he was forewarned about the “you” and “he” in Thrown Down decades prior.

My tweet when the show was originally canceled due to illness was “If it’s Stevie or Chris who are sick, I hope they know they’re welcome to all my organs. If it’s Mick, he’s on his own.” If you don’t understand that I’m joking around, I feel very sad for you. Can’t even imagine how much your life must suck without any sense of humor. My condolences.

Was I talking about you? I don't think so. I don't even know who you are on Twitter, and I certainly don't care now.

You don't know me, we're not friends, you don't know anything about my life, so don't feel sorry or sad for me. Mind your own business, please. Go and dance with Stevie for all eternity if you like. I don't care.

How long before Stevie demands Christine be fired for making faces behind her back. Maybe Irving has already made the call that Stevie will never share the same stage with Chris again :)

I see it as Christine's sense of humor making fun of the whole event the way people get on stage and pose for all the cameras.

You have to know that when Stevie refused to record with FM it's when it went way downhill. I'm sure Lindsey was not happy with her after that and much of the major reason for them not getting along after that. She is to blame for all of it IMO.

Agree, it's the main reason. He wants to create, and she wants nothing to do with it. She'd have to write and give her material to someone she has secretly despised for many years. (This is where I say, "told ya")

And then........ he had the nerve to record with FM and tour w/ Christine. That added a lot to the conflict.

It's not about money or fame. It's about who's the boss. The more she said she wasn't, the more she thought she should be.
And then her fame and $$ took over as an instrument to achieve such bossness. $he played it well.

And with Tom dead she was free from her eternal moral compass to do whatever she wanted. She was free to get rid of Lindsey and to bring Mike into the band.

She probably wasn't expecting what happened with Lindsey after his firing, but at the same time I doubt she cared much. She lives in her own world now.

Buckingham McVie was an offense to Buckingham Nicks. That was her thing with Lindsey, something only she shared with him. And he destroyed it by doing the same with Christine. Her reasoning, not mine.

This is sooo sooo true, and at the real root of the whole debacle. I truly believe she wouldn't want Tom seeing this side of her. And from all I have read about Tom, even though I don't know him personally, I have gathered he was the type of guy that would have been mortified at such actions.

If you read Warren Zanes biography of Petty, you will see how much he values loyalty. He put up with an abusive marriage (as the recipient of the abuse) for over a decade before cutting things off.

He put up with heroin abuse by Howie Epstein for over a decade without letting him go until Howie just could not do the gig, barely showed up for a few concerts. He overlooked fireable offenses from Stan Lynch for seven years (arguably more, if you count failure to execute in the studio) before finally pulling the plug. One manager his entire career.

It may well be he was not one to judge others for doing otherwise, but he obviously lived his life placing a high value on loyalty.

How could she even say that?! What a total diss to Lindsey Buckingham. She treats him like an afterthought or an insignificant part of the most popular incarnation of FM that SHE shared with him.. But then again that speech she gave was so thoughtless, unprepared, rambling, ungrateful, and just so full of narcissistic self glory. I guess that's to be expected.?
