MOJO 306 – May 2019: Fleetwood Mac

Heralding their hotly anticipated homecoming shows, MOJO embraces all of Fleetwood Mac’s stellar phases, celebrating their 50 Greatest Songs while interrogating Mick and Christine about their latest incarnation... and why Lindsey had to go.

many had asked them on twitter whether there will be anything beyond the ole "we were not happy" bs, and they said there will be much more. we'll see, not holding my hopes up, probably the same ole bs from Mick and Christine as in their other recent interviews touting UK shows of the "happy happy new band".

And this is why I must go ...

Is this going to be when they start trashing him? That's fine, but it will reveal everything they said about it being because of him not wanting to tour as the lie that it was.

I still wish you gone.

i fully suspect that yes. especially judging by the last 2 interviews Mick gave and that one Chris gave, both touting the UK dates.

there's also this line / teaser -

COVER STORY: FLEETWOOD MAC The 50 Greatest Songs from every incarnation of The Band That Refused To Die, from heart-rending blues to solid gold pop. Plus: their latest unbelievable chapter told with exclusive new interviews. “It was a really bad time,” admits Christine McVie.

“It was a really bad time,” admits Christine McVie

From the start, I assumed that this was entirely just Stevie refusing to be in the band with LB and everyone else reluctantly giving her what she wanted. Like I’ve always thought the rest of the band liked Lindsey and never would’ve gone along with this if they weren’t backed into a corner by Stevie. Even then, it’s surprising to me that they’d be able to go through with it if they had any love for LB at all.

But Chris and Mick now constantly talking about how unhappy they were and what a “bad time” it was has me wondering if maybe there was more to it. They could easily refuse to talk about the subject, keep it out of interviews like Stevie’s been doing, or just give vague “It’s a difficult situation and this was all we could do to continue touring” answers. That’s what they would be doing if they truly liked LB, wanted him in the band, and agreed to this under duress. But instead, they’re flat out saying things that make him look bad. Like that they were all unhappy and that it was a bad time. That’s not the behavior of innocent bystanders who didn’t want this to happen. It’s becoming more apparent to me that perhaps they aren’t completely full of sh*t and maybe there was something LB was doing that had multiple band mates annoyed - or at least just not loving him enough to fight for him. Idk, just a thought.

People have been demanding more information for a long time, but I question whether it's really going to make anyone feel any better. If the new details are ugly, the situation could easily go from bad to worse--for the band members, the people close to them, and their fans. It would be sadly ironic to end up wishing the initial lie had just been accepted in the first place.

i was wondering about that line too. Mojo certainly knows how to reel in readers! we know they're not gonna say anything bad for the band reputation because they are promoting their UK dates and they have to prove how they were right to throw him out.

i'm gonna withhold my judgement on Christine till i read the interview. if she throws Lindsey under the bus than she's just as bad as the rest of them.
saying she's happy happy happy with Lindsey in 2017 and than just as happy happy happy after Stevie and Mick throw him out in 2018/19 is kinda kooky, but i guess you are promoting your current tours in both cases.

we were all giving Christine benefit of the doubt because:
1) she insisted in CBS interview she didn't know about Lindsey ouster
2) she repeated the same in Rolling Stone audio interview and said she was in the UK when they told her and that when she left for the UK everything was fine and dandy
3) she sent that email to Lindsey saying she misses him and she had nothing to do with the ouster.

sounds like Christine wants to have her cake and eat it too.

now Mick and Stevie have been on sh*t-on-Lindsey spree since april 2018 and never stopped, providing a number of contradicting excuses for what they did, so anything Mick says has no meaning at this point.

you can be unhappy or annoyed with someone you [barely] work with (although recording of BuckVie video seems to mightily contradict that unhappiness claim). that doesn't mean you should throw them out of the band of equals, where he has done huge stuff for that band's success over decades and where everyone had been annoying for 50 years, at the very end of the road as they are about to retire. the only band out there that still had their classic lineup intact. and because that was done without just cause, they paid up that lawsuit as fast as they could (after their dramatic "we will see you in court! we dispute everything he says!").

we don't know it was Christine. because the only info about that came from Mick. Mick said that to Wendy Welch. he threw Christine under the bus. and Mick has been lying on other stuff, so why do we believe him on that one?

i don't really know how situation can get worse for fans. right now there are tons of ex Stevie and Fleetwood Mac hardcore fans who have been following them for decades who cannot even stand to listen to the music that has been the soundtrack of their lives. they are also not talking to tons of other Stevie fans who are staunchly standing by her now, many claiming she's an angel who can do no wrong and has finally got rid of her lifetime nemesis. and in some cases those fans have been friends for years, but now those friendships are broken. just look around here, all the riffs between people and endless name calling. people want to know what happened, the good and the bad and the ugly.

and apparently, Lindsey wants to know what happened too, who was unhappy and why. and why they didn't talk to him and tell him that, and try to work it out. as normal people would.

YOU went from being relatively happy with Mick in November, 2017 to detesting him by February, 2018. A lot can happen in a year. Things change, perspectives change, sometimes very quickly.

I could understand why Stevie, Mick, and Azoff became unhappy with Lindsey. It’s also understandable how being around a legendarily toxic relationship would make bystanders like Christine unhappy.

 i don't know these people, even if what you are claiming were true. other than Lindsey, i never really talked to any of them. very different from people who went together through thick and thin for 50 years, don't ya think?

Lindsey didn't change from 2017 to 2018. and certainly not from Nov 2017 to Jan 2018. that's a month, not a year. he didn't change for years, probably decades. he's been way mellower and nicer than in their heyday, so how him changing for the better is suddenly a problem?

yes being around toxic relationship is draining. Christine knew what she was coming back to. they all knew and lived with it for decades. Christine mentioned back in 2017 interviews how they all get along great, except Lindsey and Stevie. she also mentioned how much nicer to work with Lindsey is now as opposed to back in the heyday when he was asocial and razor focused on work. so what did change? Stevie gained more power. she became very commercially successful again. that's what changed. she felt she had enough power to pull the ouster.

MikeInNV

and we would care about that why?

Well FWIW, when I said band members I was including Lindsey. An inability to come to an agreement over a touring schedule doesn't really make anyone sound that awful. But if Christine, who is often seen as a voice of reason, elaborates on what made it "a really bad time" and puts at least part of the fault on Lindsey, he may look worse than he does now. And that will just give the different factions of FM fans more to fight about.

Does she mean it was a bad time between Stevie and Lindsey??? Maybe it wasn't the whole band having probs with LB but the tension, bickering, bs between those two, which would of course impact everyone else.... I don't want to be reaching too hard but I also think that the band will be under strict orders from The Queen to not make honest statements that SHE was the only one with probs with LB. So it's not dishonest for them to say they were unhappy but they just are fudging language to not say that the reason THEY were unhappy was because SN was unhappy with LB. Can't rock her boat or mess with her narrative.

Lindsey has been made to look bad for 40 years now. I think his fans can take it.

I don’t see myself crying into my pillow, brokenly gasping, “I wish I didn’t know now what I didn’t know then!”

Plus, if Lindsey has some big secret to hide, I think he would have just gone home and shut up for fear of what the others might reveal. Instead he was running around being more visible, forthright and open.

think if they had any class they'd stop this
nonsense after his health issue. But no.

Whether what they have to say is true or not,
it shows what type people these 4 are.

They already won. They got rid of Lindsey so that the Queen could be happy.

You’d think they would move on and enjoy their dreamy tour without annoying Lindsey. But no, they have to go further and trash him at every opportunity they have. Trash him and minimize his legacy and his contributions to the band.

And to think some people still think they’re the greatest band in the world. That says a lot about yourself. No wonder friendships were broken.

It's my suspicion that this is exactly how it will read when the full story comes out. It was a bad time for Stevie and Lindsey, "people" were deeply unhappy (gotta keep it vague!), and the band made this "very difficult" decision. But, we shall see!

Maybe before you start throwing stones at other members here, you take stock of the fact that you are the one comparing the complicated relationships among people who have known and worked with each other for decades, and a fan's opinion of a drummer she does not know personally? It's an absurd comparison and an even weaker argument. Worse still, it's just lazy.

But then there was that article done at the end of the American leg of their "On With the Show" tour where Stevie was vocally VERY unhappy, Mick was happy to see John and Christine getting along and chumming it up, but flabbergasted by the animosity between Lindsey and Stevie. He even quoted Christine who said their holding onto old wounds should have ceased years ago.

So I'm thinking the band WERE unhappy because the Americans were acting like spoiled hateful brats. What's so sad is that the Brits decided to honor the wishes of one of those brats over the other out of pure greed.

Would I have been happy had Stevie left instead of Lindsey? Not especially but truthfully I would not have been outright disgusted. She could go one and do her thing while the remaining four made new music. That, for me, as always made the difference. Both LB and SN are insufferably self-centered in different ways but only LB is open and urging of fresh creativity and musical growth. So, I can look past his often aloof media personality.

I think these forms are becoming a very morbidly fascinating place to visit. So interesting to see middle-aged to past middle-aged people making this entire situation this serious . Both team Lindsay and team Stevie fans take obsession to a brand new level of obsession. I've listened to this band for 40 years, but frankly, if what's going on between Lindsey Stevie the Mac is that important to anybody then they must not have any real problems. Good for you 👍.

Same. I wouldn't be happy if Stevie left because I want all of them in the band, but creatively she's doing way less than Lindsey. And she has her magnificent solo career, so rich and full of packed arenas. I certainly wouldn't miss her at all.

I’m not a huge Stevie solo fan...so that aspect wouldn’t interest me.

But, the Brits I don’t really understand.
Mick we know is permanently broke so he goes where the money is, enough said.
John and Christine, I think must be so loyal to the brand Fleetwood Mac and more important to Mick. They took the decision to remain with Mick.
Bank accounts came into it but it’s more...we owe Mick our loyalty.

Same here, I would miss Stevie, as I miss Lindsey.

So that album and tour with Lindsey was chopped liver?

She or John could have saved the day, yet they did nothing. They suck!

I know they suck, but I’m just trying to put reasoning behind their decision.....ie why ???
As to the Album and Tour, errrr, no idea, other than she’s a musician and enjoyed making music with Lindsey.

I'm sure $tevie had Irving's full support(even though the scumbag was Lindsey's manager as well), so when the most powerful manager in the history of music is trying to sell you on it, I guess you go along...?

Loyalty means nothing to any of them.

This is about as true as your post from a while back saying most of Stevie Nicks's songs are sang in the key of F. In fact, they are not always in the same key, and the common keys she sings in are C major (Dreams), A minor (Rhiannon) and B flat major (Secret Love, Landslide) and B flat minor (Thrown Down).
Not only are you musically illiterate, thinking that the note a song starts on in the melody line is the key of the song eg Rhiannon, you are also full of BS on the band's politics.
They stayed together through thick and thin for 43 years, so show some respect for that, Homer.

Why is this getting weirder and weirder?
Turning on each other over Fleetwood Mac?
It doesn't involve any of us fans.
I understand people being disappointed, or upset.
But this is becoming as serious to people as a religious or political argument.
It's kind of bizarre.
Why let it affect your lives?

Agree 100%
My post got ignored when I said Stevie Nicks is a nobody to me, she is another person in a world full of people, and so is Lindsey Buckingham. They are very talented but when these talents go - and they will - they will be just like the rest of us. Why idolize them and support one over the other?

You can show all the respect you want for the band that fired and thrashed Lindsey after 43 years of hard work and without a valid reason. Don’t come here and tell others what to think.

That’s literate enough for you?

well, to be fair, some of the fans in those friendships are actually in real life relationships with members of the FM family.

i love it how people in the "positive forum" complain about negativity. maybe they should consider all the negativity Mick has been spewing in his interviews, which are all over that forum. "we" were unhappy so we decided someone needed to take the fall = #negativity

Maybe we LOVE Lindsey. THE most creative force in the band, and the architect of their sound, and band leader, for over FOUR DECADES.

Some things are simply UNFORGIVABLE. Rape, child molestation, animal cruelty, THIS!

The big things, the small ones.Truer than true. It's a band fan forum. The Rumours drama from 1976 is still a hot topic of conversation here, as it should be—just as much as anything else directly or remotely related to the band. What else is there for a fan forum to do? Keep everything absolutely topical to the last few weeks? A lot of us—me included—really have nothing (or nothing more) to say about the current tour. I get tired of the knee-jerk crankiness, too, but I'd never dream of making any attempt to corral the conversation. Let it go wherever it goes, and this is the direction it's going. Actually, a lot of the fans here who are vocally disgusted with the current situation still share some cool insights into it. For me, a post is worth reading because it says something unusual or amusing or informative, not because it's got a certain "right" attitude about a year-old event. A forum that's been up for over twenty years, like this one, is bound to repeat itself a lot. Topics and attitudes and opinions will often seem stale to some of us readers. I've seen and added to so many threads about our favorite songs on Bella Donna or Mirage that I have absolutely nothing more to say. But I skip what bores me and dig around for something that amuses me. (That's why I wish we had a different format—to make it more convenient to decide at a glance.)

I thought Go Your Own Way would be number 1 to be honest. But I'm happy to go with Dreams.

I'm more surprised about The Green Manalishi. Whatever it takes to put Lindsey's songs as low on the list as they could. I'm also surprised Don't Stop isn't #3 instead of GYOW.
This is a "Peter Green was more important to the band than Lindsey Buckingham" list. Since Stevie's fans love numbers so much, I wonder how many copies The Green Manalishi sold in comparison to GYOW.

I don’t know much about this mag. But is it a UK based magazine.?
If so, that may explain the Peter Green slight bias.
I am a big fan of his music, though. Whether The Green Manalishi should be higher than GYOW is open to debate.
Dreams was a much bigger hit than GYOW in the UK, which may explain why Dreams is top ???

I have no doubt Stevie is pissed that this Christine-penned tune was snubbed!

I agree that Christine's songs are out of order... I'd put You Make Loving Fun and Say You Love Me above Don't Stop.

And I don't really have any issue with Dreams at #1. It's a killer track that I suspect only us die-hards are sick of because it became rather stale on stage some time in the early 80s (I'm perhaps being generous, for some). But to me the song, as recorded, is near perfection.

It is a kind of pop perfection that is exquisite. Yes. And while I think other FM songs better show off the band's versatility and ingenuity (The Chain, Tusk, Hold Me, even Little Lies) Dreams has the virtue of a great vocal, and outstanding instrumentation. Anyone coming to the band through this song knows John's a killer bassist, Mick is a rock solid drummer with a unique and economical flair, Christine's a great (and underrated) texturalist at the keys, and Lindsey's an unparalleled arranger-guitarist whose guitar fills are parts in themselves. So there's that...

I've always thought that Dreams was number 1 because it's very Fleetwood Mac. Stevie lays down a great vocal which the band got the best of out her many takes.

However, this song is so boring without the band having weird idiosyncrasies on their instruments. Plus, the whole BuckVie sound (including bass/drums) make it interesting. It's just a boring song made into a stellar track!

I give this song a lot of credit.

Also make no mistake: Thunder does happen whether it's raining or not!

Mick Fleetwood and Christine McVie have confirmed they chose to ditch Lindsey Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac due to his feud with ex-lover Stevie Nicks.

Lindsey left the band acrimoniously last year, and later claimed he had been kicked out of the band by Stevie, 70, who he alleged took exception to his “smirking” behaviour at a MusiCares benefit concert and refused to share a stage with him ever again.

Comparing the warring duo’s relationship to Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s tempestuous marriages, the group’s leader Mick told Britain’s Mojo magazine, “Support really could not be given to ask the situation to continue. It was too challenging.”

The veteran drummer disagreed that the group’s guitarist was fired, but did admit the famed guitarist was forced out due to the animosity between him and his one-time lover.

Mick, 71, explained: “The truth is, call it what you want, a parting of company took place, and it had to take place, and it was supported by the remaining band members around something that for sure was a major problem to two people – Lindsey and Stevie.”

Christine, 75, collaborated on a joint album with her former colleague as recently as 2017, believed the rest of the group had to “make a choice” as she feared for their future if action wasn’t taken.

“It was the only route we could take, because there was too much animosity between certain members of the band at that point, there was just no way it could’ve gone on as a five-piece, a group with Lindsey in the band. So it was either just completely break up the band or make the best of it,” she confessed.

The 69-year-old initially sued his old bandmates, but the case was settled in December, leading to him expressing a willingness to return to the Fleetwood Mac fold if invited. However, he underwent open heart surgery last month and is now recovering.

Ooh la la. Thanks for posting.

This confirms what we thought. Not all members of the band were mad at him. There's no secret heinous conduct by Lindsey that they have been concealing for the world's sake, which would justify his ouster. No magic elixir which will prove that Stevie, as always, is absolved of all guilt and responsibility.

It was the age old feud between Lindsey and Stevie and they backed the money horse, no matter how much Lindsey had given to them from the seventies to the present. Christine's comment that they either had to kick him out or disband says it all. Well, gee how could you possibly disband when all that money was lying on the table. Better to stab Lindsey in the back (well, um, heart actually) and go on with the show.

Confirming what we already knew since day 1: a Stevie vs. Lindsey feud. Even though many people didn’t want to believe it.
And Mick and Christine held Stevie responsible.

All they had to do was walk away from the tour talk for a year and Stevie and Lindsey would have come to some sort of compromise by necessity. Stevie wanted to tour as much as anyone. She wants the money. She would have gotten over the fight and come to the table, if they waited it out. Little Bo Peep's Sheep. Leave them alone and they'll come home, wagging their tales behind them. And if she didn't, then perhaps it was time for them to disband and go out with the legacy intact.

But no. No loyalty. No shame. No conscience.

At least they've stopped lying, for the minute. Of course, I haven't read the entire interview yet. They're probably still lying up a storm in other ways.

That's the first thing that occurred to me. There's a fight (gosh, a fight in Fleetwood Mac?), so you send the two parties to neutral corners for six months. Big deal!

Something is still odd to me here—maybe because I don't think Stevie's as pathological as some of my colleagues think here. If she's disgusted with Lindsey and she's just finished a fabulous solo tour, why didn't she tell Fleetwood Mac, "Sorry, I'm not doing this anymore. I'm going back on the road with the Pretenders or Don Henley or one of my other famous pals who can sell out arenas with me"?

Or DID she tell them that, and they panicked and sacrificed Lindsey at that point in order to keep the band's tour intact? "Stevie! Wait! What if we fire him? Will you stay? Is there anyone you'd want to replace him? Name your terms."

I think the latter. That’s why I always blamed Muck more- I think it was his saying what you wrote at the end that did it. She just issued him or me.

I don't think she ever thought about leaving the band. She wanted to punish him. She wanted to show him how she was touring with the band while he wasn't.

I agree, something is odd about that interview, or the part that we saw. Things are not adding up completely for me, maybe the entire interview would help.

1. Why was Christine so mad initially and claimed she didn't know, and why did she tell Lindsey that it wasn't her doing? Now she is saying that she did know, and helped make the decision? I think she was told what was happening and she didn't stand up for Lindsey. And maybe now is paying the price by having to "tow the company line."
2. Why did Azoff tell Lindsey that Stevie gave the ultimatum, "him or me?" So now the whole band is saying that it was all of them? Are they that afraid of Stevie, or are they just trying to look like a cohesive group?

I think Stevie was the instigator, the rest of them idiot followers with no backbone to stand up to her. It still stinks like garbage. You don't do that to a friend/family member.

Thus, the legacy is killed, the loyalty is dead, and they all look like fools.

This made me more angry at them than ever......................

So Mick and Christine are out doing marginal press at best for this tour, answer questions and essentially taking the hit for Stevie too. Creating a nice little buffer for her from reality. Sure they are pointing fingers her way too (very delicately or she will kick them out too--they still have EU and AU/NZ to get thru), but she doesn't have to answer anything. Do the rest of them think they can just knock on LB's door when the tour is over and say "Stevie made us do it---hope we can still be friends" And how does she look at herself in the mirror knowing she orchestrated (in all likelihood) the demise of the rest of the bands friendships/relationships with Lindsey. I guess when you can go home and count your millions, it doesn't matter? Morally corrupt people

except he didn't ASK them to give him a year. He may have initially at some point put that out there (we still don't really know) but he had pulled back from that and was asking about doing his solo shows between the long break between shows the HMQ needs to rest her voice.

Been that way for a long time.

In reality, they probably should have broken up after Tusk-- it was so difficult for those two to keep working together, they were going in different musical directions, they had vastly different ideas about playing the fame game, etc.

But they stayed together-- which is on all 5 of them-- because of the money. Lindsey grudgingly reined in his more adventurous side and Stevie cut short her Bella Donna tour and they eased the strain with their separate limos, separate hotels, bags of coke, whatever. Stevie has no interest in making music if it doesn't make her money, Lindsey has the privilege of wealth to not maybe need the money so much but his ego cares about how many albums he sells....

And the Brits, well, they follow the money trail too.

Such a sh*tshow.

I think that's partially true about Stevie. But I believe it's just
as true that she can't make music anymore. Good new music.
I think she just can't write great songs anymore. So it's a bit
of a cop-out for her to use the excuse that it won't make her
any money. The only success she's had in the past 30 plus
years solo was Trouble In Shangri-La. And that was only
because VH1 plugged it for a whole month.

Lindsey probably wishes his albums sold more. But if it was
his ego he was worried about, I don't think he'd release another
album. After his second album, none of the others have been
successful with the numbers. But he's an artist. It's not always
about the money.

You can show all the respect you want for the band that fired and thrashed Lindsey after 43 years of hard work and without a valid reason. Don’t come here and tell others what to think.

That’s literate enough for you?

I'm no longer a diehard fan. In fact, nowadays I prefer to go see local bands for free or for less than $50 a show, like Bonniedoon from the Blue Mountains and Georgia June in Sydney.
Not telling others what to think, if you think my word is Gospel, that's your interpretation, not my intention.
Poor Lindsey, receiving $$$ settlement, and never having to work with his arch nemesis ever again. (Let's see who takes that juicy bait!)

Lindsey is very wealthy, and because of producer monies, and wiser investment choices, possibly more wealthy than Stevie.

Stevie made an empty threat. She has never had any intention of leaving Fleetwood Mac. Christine stayed with the band she committed the rest of her working life to, she gave that guarantee, to her it was iron clad, and did not change based on other personnel changes.

I didn't go to Pittsburgh because I was so mad at Stevie, but I have been a Mac fan since 1975 and have never missed seeing them on tour.

It just blows me away what Stevie did and that the others said "ok"

I even had thought of going to the Rock n roll hall of fame ceremony. I'm such a fool.

Stevie backstabbed a man she has known since high school. Whom she loved and he loved her. Because of him she is in Fleetwood Mac and now in your final years, you throw him out because your mad at him. She has shown me that she thinks only of herself and not the legacy of Fleetwood Mac.

This could have been the final tour for them. Stevie won't record so why bother after this. Just keep your distance from each other for the tour. Man up. I mean really Stevie, you think everyone loves you all the time? Sorry, I'm letting the anger out right now. LOL

I'm sure their intention is to knock on Lindsey's door once the tour is over and they're all away from Stevie's sight. I surely hope he and his family are not remotely ready to welcome all of this traitors into their lives again. They really not deserve any kind of forgiveness.

Christine and John should both be ashamed.

You often said that Mick would sell Biddy if he could get a buck for her. I was actually wondering if he truly loved his sisters the other day. I know Christine loves her brother John and parents, but I don't know what she thinks of the other younger half brother. But anyway, I thought through fights and fits that they all had a familial attachment. Not true. The affection that I thought was there was illusion.

When they made that one appearance after The Dance was over, Christine said they all got in their cars and drove away. She said they'd said their goodbyes before, so there was nothing else to say. That kind of shocked me, especially since she was leaving the band for good. I thought she would say they hugged and cried. But that's not who they are. I shrugged it off then, thinking I was misreading things. I wasn't. They are not family.

I accept that Lindsey got mad because Rhiannon was played. He was irate. Didn't throw a guitar this time -- which is progress for him. My response is: so what. It didn't merit being fired from the band. I'd as soon they throw Mick out, name it Mac and bring in Don Henley to play drums.

But then there are other people I have followed for years and they never even mentioned Fleetwood Mac before. Real estate agents, stylists, restaurant owners, broadcasters, models. All of the sudden they are rushing to see that show. My realtor posted a picture of the penguins in top hats back drop on her Instagram and I honestly didn't recognize it. It was so out of context for her. She said she gave her husband an "experience" gift for his birthday and took him to see FM. What? Dante's inferno would be more of an "experience" to me. But it's amazing to me that all of these people are rushing to the concert.

I'm beginning to think Lindsey really was holding them back all this time.

No, apparently it was the smirk, which is as ridiculous as the Rhiannon thing. And especially because Christine and Mick were making fun of her as much as Lindsey, or even more. But of course they're not Lindsey. Which only proves she was waiting for the perfect opportunity to get rid of him.

I'm glad it's finally all out in the open. It was since April 9th, 2018. But it was easier to believe Lindsey was the bad guy and Stevie the victim.

I’m not convinced it didn’t start with that stupid Bob Dylan comment. She literally brought it up a decade later and was still pissed about it.

I'm pretty new around here and am spotty with my fandom (ebbed and flowed through the decades). I don't recall this comment. Can someone explain the Bob Dylan comment and the Rhiannon thing people have referred to? Thanks in advance for insights.

In the Destiny Rules documentary (showing the recording of the Say You Will album), there was a scene with Lindsey not agreeing with Stevie changing tense during the lyrics of a song and Stevie said "you wouldn't say that to Bob Dylan" (or something to that effect) referencing Dylan's sometimes unusual song structures. The Rhiannon thing I believe has to do with supposedly Lindsey throwing a tantrum because the Musicares announcement music played when the band came to the stage was a Stevie song. At this point I don't even remember where we heard that from. Was there ever official confirmation on it? (Edit, was this something Azoff said?)

Curious why you think they will want to knock on his door. According to the Billboard article posted by Kak125 on the Present Band forum, the tour is on track to gross a hundred million dollars on the North American leg. They don't seem to be hurting.

My comment has nothing to do with money and everything to do with human decency. Mick and Christine confirmed Stevie made them do it. Unless she’s picking their friends now, I would hope 40+ years of “friendship” and hauling Micks a$$ out of bankruptcy more times that one can count warrants at least some type of resolution, on the personal level. But this is human decency and it’s apparent that is sorely lacking amongst FM

I am definitely #TeamLindsey though I do think it's ridiculous that he was upset that they played Rhiannon at MusiCares. Look where it got him. That song has been popular since 1975 and he still found it offensive in 2018? If only he'd held his temper/frustrations in check that night... but would it have mattered? Probably not. *sigh* Hindsight is great, isn't it.

It's from the Destiny Rules documentary. Lindsey and Stevie were working on one of Stevie's songs and Lindsey (diplomatically) suggested she alter some of the phrasing as she was mixing tenses. Stevie retorted with the immortal line 'Would you say that to Bob Dylan'.
The fact he dared 'criticize' her was a big no-no and she took it very personally- She never let it drop even though it should have been a relatively minor, no-big deal thing.

The Rhiannon thing refers to the music that was played as they were introduced at the Musicares event. Lindsey felt they shouldn't have played Rhiannon. I'm not sure whether he wanted a neutral song as they entered such as The Chain or no music at all. Apparently there was an argument about it but to what extent? who knows?

During the course of this whole situation there were some who seemed to think (hope?) that the band would fail spectacularly without Lindsey (and they would come crawling back to beg him to bail them out). I apologize for inadvertently lumping you in with that crowd. There were some comments just now about how the band "would come knocking on his door" and I assumed that was what you meant as well. However, I don't know that I'd assume any of them really socialize outside the structure of a tour. I would imagine they are friendly on the job, but after all these years, probably don't care to see each other much once a tour wraps. In that respect, I don't know that there will be any door knocking for any of them.

I don’t think Lindsey was offended by the song. They performed a sparser version as Buckingham Nicks and he spent s long time crafting it into the powerhouse it now is. I think he was upset because it was done (by Karen?) without him knowing anything about it and he wanted something more representative of the group as a whole. He’s been known to object to s Mojo magazine cover for similar reasons

Thank you. I will never understand why there was so much confusion about this, or why there were so many implications that Lindsey took some sort of offense at "a Stevie song being played." It's just pure stupidity to have any FM music playing before a live performance, regardless of what song it is, and he was right to be upset about it.

They used to be a family. Or at least that's what Stevie & co. pretended us to believe for so many years. Nice joke it was.

Did they make you cry?
Make you break down?
Shatter your illusions of love?

Seriously, I don’t know where people ever got the idea they were especially close. I think Christine is personally close to Mick and to a lesser extent John and Stevie, but her relationship with Lindsey was always professional and not especially personal, which she’s talked about for at least 30 years. It always came off as being very in the moment.

I guess I don’t see the contradiction. Christine was having a great time with LBCM but saw turbulence in Fleetwood Mac (the nature of which we don’t actually know) during tour negotiations. Whatever drama there was wasn’t between Christine and Lindsey, but it was affecting the band as a whole. After MusiCares, the other three decided Lindsey was out without consulting Christine, but then the four of them came to the decision to play on, and Christine enjoys playing with the new guys.

As for “this is the best it’s ever been,” whatever. They always say things like that. Remember when Lindsey referred to the recording of TITN as a “healing experience” in 1987?

"Democracy" (2:22-3:08 of www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEXglFYtGCk):

“Fleetwood Mac [had planned to go out this year but now] is going out next year.... I kind of put them on hold. I mean, I made this record. That was a year. Then I toured last year–off and on all last year–and did lots and lots of press. And then I decided to take this year also to tour all summer, because I did not feel that this record was finished. And so it did not make Fleetwood Mac happy but I said to them, ‘I’m taking 2012 for In Your Dreams. I’m sorry. And if you can’t understand that in your heart–how important this is to me–then I’m sorry, but I’m doing it, and I will see you in 2013.'”–Stevie Nicks 2012

Part of me just wants September to be here so this can all be OVER. If you've lived through the Mac cycle as long as me, you know that Stevie WILL take her Stevie time. This ugly part of FM just has to end. Stevie will go on to do awesome by herself and I pray that Lindsey gets well enough to sing/perform again.

And I'll add it's very different from Lindsey promoting TITN and saying it was a healing experience, namely because of what I said above: no one could possibly be hurt by Lindsey's claims that Tango was a positive experience, whether that was true or not. Christine's words in this case are an implicit shot at Lindsey. Whether she believes it or not, some things are best left unsaid to spare the feelings of a longtime colleague and collaborator. Your point about them all saying "this is the best thing we've ever done" for every record is true, but this is a different kind of comment and a very specific context.

And - it would be equivalent to Mike and Neil saying that this time is their best time ever on the road. I don’t see them saying that - does anyone? Because they are not as stupid and as low as Mick and Christine. They would know it’s a slap in the face to Tom and their previous bands. I will say this : Lindsey did the same sentiment and lines when Christine left. He felt they were more open as a 4 piece. Best music they've ever done. Best they've ever gotten along. More masculine sound, burning bridges... etc blah blah blah blah blah

wait, she thinks "what we have now is better than what we ever had before" ??? Maybe in terms of the absence of the insufferable and longstanding Buckingham–Nicks tension? Without the animosity between those two, the others probably feel more relaxed? Of course, along with that relaxed, sunny amicability, you get a sort of generic musical blandness. The band's emotionally sunniest times are also usually the most artistically boring. (Remember Behind the Mask? Remember the 1994 tour shows? Neither do I.)

If this configuration of easygoing, amiable personalities records an album, I have no doubt that it'll be dull: professional and glossy, musical ducks all in a row, but no stirring passions (like Rumours) and certainly no oddball visionary excitement that distorts the medium's accepted boundaries (like Tusk). Now, you could proffer the Buckingham McVie album as a safely, sanely bland album, but it contains any number of deliberate, compelling little deficiencies and quirks that will be totally absent from a new Fleetwood Mac album from this group.

Possibly. I don't have any compelling evidence that Christine and Neil have any especial musical fondness for each other that would lead to studio work together. The fact that they're both in the same band now, out on the road singing Mac classics every night and smiling at each other onstage, isn't in and of itself the evidence I'm talking about for some sort of sympatico musicality—the sort that Chris and Lindsey have from time to time (or that Chris would have with, say, Steve Winwood or Eric Clapton). Neither Christine nor Neil ever mentioned the other in the decades prior to the 2018–19 tour. Until I get a stronger sense of what Chris and Neil truly think of each other as songwriters or musicians—and whether they both think they have anything to say as a duo—I'll stick with Lindsey being her more obvious option for more recording—a Buckingham McVie second album.

I really hope he's not reading all this crap. It's not good for him. They're basically explaining how they tolerated him for 43 years because he's a musical genius. So they put up with him because they needed him to make good music. Once they decided they didn't want to make new músic they got rid of him. They all sided with Stevie and fired the Grinch.

Harsh, but that's basically what they're saying. Nice people.

This is how I perceive it, too. Especially, what I have put in bold.

well, it will be interesting to see what the queen has to say at her hall of fame induction in about a week's time. she can thank jimmy for, in her own words, "handing me my solo career" but really, she should thank lindsey for handing her her career, period. even tom admitted that lindsey remains her best producer, and that there were many times tom was confronted with her droning demos and couldn't figure what the hell to do with them when lindsey then came and knew exactly what to do with them.

chris also has said that she wouldn't know what to do with stevie's songs and that when stevie tried to explain what she was trying to do with a song chris "had no idea" what stevie was saying, but that lindsey would just totally get it and be able to translate her non technical incoherence into something musicians could understand.

in many ways stevie, who likes to think she is her own magnificent creation, is really (in the studio at least) the creation of other, more talented people who take her raw scraps, shape them, and tell her what and how to sing. lindsey has said that really, based on the amount of work he did on so much of her material, that many of them should in fact be credited as co-writes. but her ego would never stand for that.

i think the RRHOF induction will just make her more insufferable. the fact that it's for her solo work (much of which is comprised -- certainly so for bella donna-- of songs she had in her collection since before FM, songs that LB worked on and created the basic format of how they should be recorded already.., like that's alright, sorcerer, candle bright, and on and on) will let her pretend she did it all herself or with jimmy. jimmy himself said when he started working with her she had no idea about anything because she let lindsey do everything (so she could dance around and have fun). :(

Perhaps the band wouldn't do the knocking, but Christine herself might. If Stevie wants to keep Fleetwood Mac a strictly touring band, Chris may decide that she wants to write and record more songs, and Lindsey's her obvious option.

Stevie: “What we do is go on the road, do a ton of shows and make lots of money. We have a lot of fun. Making a record isn’t all that much fun.”

Christine has always shared Lindsey's sentiment that studio work is more satisfying and enjoyable than live performance. A permanent state of touring might not be Christine's idea of fun.

I wonder he would think now that she's made these comments? He's a better man than me if he could overlook the backstabbing.

I will say this : Lindsey did the same sentiment and lines when Christine left. He felt they were more open as a 4 piece. Best music they've ever done. Best they've ever gotten along. More masculine sound, burning bridges... etc blah blah blah blah blah

I just have a problem with the way they let him go, and the fact that they let $tevie control the band. She has enough control and they gave her more.

Farewell Mac...

Her music never sounded that great live anyway. 33% more room. Oh he had loads to say. But he felt she walked away and he was bitter. What is she bitter about?

Yeah. She said he thinks she’s all play and no work and she thinks he is just the opposite.

He would show her a bar and she would say, “you mean that bar down the street,” to his chagrin, she said.

I see this a bit different. Mick and Christine playing both sides. We didn’t fire Lindsey, he had to leave because of the toxicity between him and Stevie and retaining Stevie was in the best financial interest of the stakeholders.

Mick says how could we fire him after all he has done for the band? This is just what was best for everyone.

They both know this run is done in September and Lindsey is always willing to make new music. They can play that card with him and then still have an income stream in a smaller Mac at the mid size theatre level with Lindsey if Stevie bails post September.

Playing both sides of the track.

How could Lindsey want to play with them again? While the entire lot is despicable, after this interview, I am finding mick and Christine more disgusting than ever, and more disgusting than Stevie I am optimistic and hopeful that he will fully recover, but I truly hope he doesn’t give them the time of day.

Because Mick's kids will be eating nothing but frozen pizzas for the rest of their lives if he doesn't toe the Stevie line. The second she said she wanted to twirl around her living room for the next 10 years, we all knew she orchestrated this, yet so many people were digging thru the archives to pin the blame on anyone but her. Her band mates just did it. albeit 12 months too late.

Lawsuit, blind loyalty, senile.

In 1987 when they asked her if they would be playing Lindsey songs on tour, she said maybe, but pointed out that aside from GYOW he never had any hits anyway. Of course, she felt abandoned then, so the cattiness had a rationale. It doesn’t today.

Legally gagged?

They were never legally gagged. Lindsey didn't file suit until October. The CBS and Rolling Stone interviews took place in April. I'm sure they were fearful of a lawsuit from Day 1 and should have been cautious about what they said (which they clearly weren't, given what we know to be true/false now), but they weren't "legally gagged" then or after the suit was settled.

What the Stevie fanatics don't like to hear is the MOST people who are going to see this current line up, have NO idea Lindsey is no longer with the band. I just talked to a friend and mentioned Lindsey's heart problems to him. He hadn't heard about it. Then I mentioned the firing and he also hadn't heard about it. This guy is a HUGE classic rock fan and listens to the radio all the time, yet he didn't hear this. My brother didn't hear about it either and bought tickets. He was PISSED. and that is exactly why Stevie cult is calling on other fans to stop talking about it, stop putting it on social media, and to get over it. and may also be one of the many reasons many people are still talking about it.

of course the whole argument that "it's been a year" is making people look either stupid or ignorant, when Lindsey's heart attack that was clearly caused by the stress of what the band did / is continuing to do to him was just a month ago, and for all we know he may not even be able to talk let alone to sing ever again. so that's not water under the bridge. that's right now, one of the Classic 5 has his health problems caused by the other 4, and we as fans may never be able to get new music from him or see him live again, because of that. so that's now and in the future, not a year ago.

transparency and facts are important to some fans, while many others would do anything to provide a cover for their idols.

Look at the data available to us. Two anecdotes from someone who has been dyspeptic about the new FM for over a year, versus the fact that hundreds of thousands are attending one of the top successful tours of the year? The evidence seems to indicate that few people beyond this forum give a good @$#% about Lindsey and his firing.
