The emotional highlight of Monday night’s sold-out Fleetwood Mac concert at Madison Square Garden — their first New York show of the post-Lindsey Buckingham era — wasn’t even a Fleetwood Mac song.

It was “Free Fallin’,” the 1989 Tommy Petty solo hit that Stevie Nicks led as the first song of the encore in tribute to her late friend and “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” collaborator. The cover was also a nod to Mike Campbell, the new Fleetwood Mac-ster and former guitarist for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Photos of Petty — some with Nicks — flashed on the video screen behind Fleetwood Mac as they all melted into one generation of rock royalty that came up together and became legends of the same era. At that moment, whatever drama that led Buckingham to be booted from Fleetwood in April 2018 didn’t seem to matter.

Another memorable moment came when Neil Finn — the former Crowded House frontman who jointed Fleetwood, along with Campbell, to replace Buckingham — did CH’s ’80s hit “Don’t Dream It’s Over” with a little help from Nicks. As he strummed on acoustic guitar, Finn had the crowd singing along “Hey now, hey now.”

But there were other moments when Buckingham was clearly missed, such as when the band confronted his departure headfirst by opening with Finn leading “The Chain.” It just didn’t feel the same with Finn fronting “Go Your Own Way,” and he needed help from Christine McVie and Nicks to bring home “Don’t Stop” in the encore.

Fleetwod Mac missed more than Buckingham’s voice and presence alongside Nicks — the band missed his energy. Campbell did his best to play the role of resident guitar god. though.

The band — which will bring its “An Evening with Fleetwood Mac” tour to Prudential Center on Wednesday and back to the Garden on March 18 — tried to make up for that by dipping into their pre-Buckingham catalog: Nicks even reclaimed “Black Magic Woman,” a tune that original member Peter Green wrote wrote for Fleetwood Mac before it became a signature hit for Santana.

Indeed, the concert was even more about Nicks — ever the mystical enchantress — who inspired the bohemian looks of some women in the audience. She had to carry the show, and she knew it.

In fact, one of the biggest roars of the night came when Nicks — who will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist at Barclays Center on March 29, after already being enshrined with Fleetwood Mac — did one of her signature twirls at the end of “Gypsy.”

This gypsy remains magical.

They really are Stevie’s backing band now. I am not saying that to stir the pot but the review essentially says it

Obviously this is a chicken-egg thing, but this strikes me as the kind of review that would have driven Lindsey up the wall. It's a Fleetwood Mac show, and two of the biggest "highlights" from the night are of other peoples' work. I can't figure out why it doesn't bother anyone else in the band, frankly...

Newsday quoted (https://www.newsday.com/entertainment/music/fleetwood-mac-madison-square-garden-1.28108378) Mick before the MSG show as saying: “We’re also blessed that the audiences have been beyond stellar and have come on this journey with the band on a level that’s beyond anything that we could have imagined. … But you can understand that going out at the beginning of this excursion, there was a lot at stake — a lot of musical integrity. We were just really incredibly fortunate we found two very talented gentlemen that fit incredibly well with the band and have a musical, fantastic story to tell in their own right.”

All I can think is, what integrity? You fired your songwriter/guitarist/producer, and now you're playing Tom Petty and Crowded House songs. I guess all the money is worth it.

Once again, a review in which Fleetwood and the McVies aren't even considered--or are considered nonentities by the lack of mention.

Fun times.

yeah, it's very interesting.

pre-scripted reviews sent to reviewers by band's publicists addressed most band members, and were saying:

Stevie is a rock queen, oh so young, oh so beautiful, moves and sings better than ever
Mick is oh so vital and his 10 minute drum solo is the highlight of the show
Christine cannot sing anymore
new guys are better than Buck and the whole band is refreshed and re-energized
usually not real mention of John
the band is happy happy happy - and, oh so happy!

you can kinda see where the wind is blowing from - Stevie, Mick, "new band" - great, Christine - sucks, John - no mention. which makes it even more funny how Chris is playing band's game when Stevie and Mick seem to be throwing her under the bus.

these recent east coast reviews (Atlanta, DC, AC, NYC) have obviously thrown that script into the trash bin and seem pretty matter-of-fact. they generally describe the show as

flat and just ok
missing Buck and his energy
set around Nicks as show's centerpiece
new guys are ok but outta place
don't generally mention Mick, John or Christine - guess not much change from previous tours in their performances.

both kinds of reviews seem to focus on 2 covers as being the highlights of the FM show and note how weird is that.

Caveat: i've only seen reviews that mention LB.

No matter how positive the reviews seem to sound, I can sense the lack of energy in all of them. In clips, I feel the band is filmed in slow motion.
I'm actually glad that I won't see the band when they come to germany. I really don't want to travel 800 km and give them my money when the highlight of the evening is a cover of the song "Free Falling". That's unworthy of FM, and not worth my time and my hard earned money. Plus - it is such a Blah!!! song.
In 2003, I was overwhelmed by the beauty of Stevie and Lindsey coming onstage hand in hand, in 2009 the band was so very entertaining, in 2013, Stevie blew me away with "GDW" and Lindsey made "Big Love" unforgettable. In 2015, I LOVED Christine being there, hadn't seen her since 1990, she blew a kiss and gave me thumps up for my "welcome back, we missed you, we love you" sign, my poor heart. Stevie angered me, she was upset about something and did not even try to be professional. With the current incarnation, they efficiently killed whatever exitement I had left in me. This tour is a shame and a poor copy of a once great band. I used to love Chistine, but her function in the band was being the bridge between Stevies excentrics and Lindseys mania. Without that function, she falls flat. And Stevie needs an antagonist to shine - who's that now? Neil Finn? HA! They are pathetic now.

Fleetwood Mac chanteuse Stevie Nicks held court backstage with Hillary Clinton before the band’s sold-out show at Madison Square Garden.
“Clinton was holed up in Stevie’s dressing room for a long time before the show,” said a spy.
Bill O’Reilly was apparently seen hanging in a backstage hallway.
Clinton also mingled “with the entire band, taking photos and chatting,” while other VIPs included Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner, and newly minted Oscar winner Mark Ronson.

I can see the Mcvies, especially Christine, calling it a day at the end of this tour.
Neither of them can need the money, and they’re well past normal retirement age.
Then, it really cannot be Fleetwood Mac any longer.
It will, at the close of this tour, be it.

Completely--for all the reasons you said above....AND they are too good and too seasoned to be her backing band. She's got Waddy and the gang. And from the looks of it--the kids from School of Rock could head out on the road with her too.

You’re assuming that they’re not enjoying it and don’t want to continue, based on what I honestly have no clue. I think it’s wishful thinking for a lot of folks around here, but not necessarily true.

Fate will probably be more a factor in how the band wraps up than age or financial considerations.

When a significant amount of reviews call out Tom Petty and Crowded House covers as the highlight of the show, there’s a problem with the bands thinking and approach to this tour. In this case THE emotional highlight was Free Fallin’? For a band like Fleetwood Mac, the emotional highlight being a cover song is simply embarrassing.

Agree. And as far as John goes, he has never been mentioned particularly prominently except as part of comments about the rhythm section of Mick and John being the ever present strong backbone of the band. (and he seems to like it that way) Happy? Anyone with eyes who attended the shows can see they seem to be happy. Christine and Mike having a ball playing off each other seems a particular highlight. I've seen reviews saying Mick was a bundle of energy and a fun, vital part of the show, but I haven't seen anyone saying the drum solo was a highlight.

I am basing it on my own thoughts...no I don’t have hard facts.
I am Stevie’s age and if I had the cash they must have, of course I’d call it a day.
Not Stevie, she’s a different creature all together, needs her ego massaging.
But the Mcviess are more down to earth and realistic.

Reviews have simply become an equation shift.

From many tours between '03-'15 the reviews always called out Buckingham's signature sound, energy, and the history with Nicks.

Now it's shifted to Mick being called out consistently for his enthusiasm and energy which wasn't a consistent thing before.

Mike and Christine are both very understated personalities which is why this has become a Stevie, Mick Neil show and not Fleetwood Mac. It's also why Free Falling has become the standout. Free Falling is also the most anthemic song Fleetwood Mac has ever played in terms of it being the easiest thing for 15k people to sing together. The Chain/Dont Stop/GYOW are Fleetwood Mac's most anthemic tunes, but not in the same way that Free Falling lights up an entire arena. To Stevie's credit - it's a freakin genius smoke and mirrors/feel good move to put that in the encore. Anyone with any doubts will be soothed by the master work of Tom Petty, not the shady Fleetwood Mac show they just sat through. The reviews have proven this to work, but at the cost of Fleetwood Mac's integrity.

To me, this could of been a really interesting show had they called it the Mick Fleetwood Revue or All Star Band....something along those lines. Throw the Fleetwood Mac "show" context out the window. Have Stevie do Stand Back and maybe other FM or solo songs she wanted to do. Create a really cool mixed bag of tunes from all of the unique people in the band. Remove the need to do signature Lindsey tunes because it's being billed a Fleetwood Mac show. They are already halfway there with the current setlist, had they pushed it more to move away from trying to create a Fleetwood Mac setlist, it would of been really interesting.

Not to mention it wouldn't of been the slap in the face that it was to Lindsey. But they chose to move forward with manufactured drama instead of pivoting to a plan B for a year and looping back with Buckingham later on for round two. That would involve working together instead of ultimatums and childish behavior. We all thought they were somewhat adults!

You mean like playing a Marxophone?

What I find disappointing now is that most of the deeper cuts that made the show interesting have gotten dropped, like “Tell Me All The Things You Do,” “Hypnotized,” and “I Got You.” That said, I really like what Mike’s doing with the two Peter Green songs. While it’s still a good set, it’s feeling much more like a typical set than what it originally was.

As for “Free Fallin’” it’s the emotional high point for reasons that should be pretty obvious. “Gypsy” was the high point in 1982 for a similar reason.

And we all knew some of those early deep cuts were going to get cut from the setlist eventually, that is classic FM behavior. The minute they played hypnotized and it didn't get the same reaction as Rhiannon - the wheels were turning to scrap it.

Thinking back to what Mike did with Learning to Fly - what about a beautiful revisit/reboot of Songbird? Maybe Chris can't play it on keyboards, but I'm sure they could come up with an alternative arrangement that wouldn't leave a dry eye in the house.

Instead of kinda playing the Gypsy solo- tear into it and put your own mark on it. I want to hear the Mike Campbell version, not Mike Campbell trying to do Lindsey Buckingham.

Sadly, IMO besides the blues numbers, his playing sounds like any other player trying to emulate Buckingham when he's incredibly talented in his own right.

The Marxophone is a great example. Again, they sorta stuck their toe over the line....but not really. So it comes across half-a$$ed to a lot of folks when that probably wasn't the intention. If any group of folks could of done another semi-acoustic version of Gypsy like the 2000 AHI benefit, it would be the band that includes Mike Campbell. Mick on the cocktail kit, the marxophone, figure out the solo, and get Stevie to back away from the shoutting approach and we might be onto something. Otherwise, it reads like a cover.

I was at this show (and in Newark too). Yes, I flew all the way from Holland to be here ... and I enjoyed it ... yes, it differs a lot from shows with LB I have seen, yes, he puts another energy to the gang ... yes, I do had to like it even more when he was on stage .... but hey ... I still saw a solid great and happy band playing ... yes, Mick's drumsolo gets boring, Yes, Freefalling was a highlight ... but I do not care it's not a Mac-song ... I had fun and no regrets that I spend a week of vacation in this city with two shows of my favorite band.

I think it's sad that all the negativity found it's way overhere as well ... stick to your own forum you bunch of ......

I thought they should have changed the name to The Mac or The Mac Attack.

Jefferson Airplane changed to Jefferson Starship and then to Starship when key members left.

The Grateful Dead shortened to The Dead without Jerry.

The Rolling Stones could shorten to The Stones if Richards Wood or Watts retires (but not if Jagger does).

Some band names shorten more easily than others.

In any case, given the 1997 reset to the Rumours lineup, the present band should not call itself Fleetwood Mac.

This was my experience as well, every word minus the in-laws bit . "You Make Loving Fun" and "Gypsy" were definitely the low-lights, which is a shame because I love both songs. The former was surprisingly dull and Stevie really butchered Gypsy ("You say HEYYYYY babyyy" with the hand-waves made my entire body cringe).

Had a great time regardless, especially for "Oh Well" and "Black Magic Woman" and the majority of the other tunes. Haters gonna hate, and I can see where the frustration comes from, but I thought "Free Fallin'" was a blast despite it not being particularly well sung. Loved the energy in the room during that song.

I was at both the NYC and Philly shows. Gypsy should be cut. There was no energy at all, in both physical movement and singing. Stevie is clearly bored out of her skull with this song and it shows. Hold Me sounded amazing!! Chris sounded good overall but a little shaky on World Turning. I oddly really enjoyed Mick's solo and the screen graphics. It was really fun. One odd note: Stevie did not say goodnight to the audience in Philly and I don't think in NY either. It strikes me as very odd and out of character for her. I really like Mike and Neil. They bring great energy and spirit to the band. I did miss Lindsey's guitar playing on a few songs.

I wish they would replace it with “Freedom.”
