It sounds like he's open to going back again.

That disappoints the f*ck out of me.

same. and i told him that at my m&g.

not dissapointed though that he's way bigger person than the rest of us, but that if Mick and Stevie come to him with their tails between their legs, he will relent and go back to that time wasting nostalgia outfit. i mean i know they are all lifelong dysfunctional family and share so much. and i'm actually encoraged with this interview, because what he was telling us at m&gs sounded even more open to the reunion.

Well, I'm sure that the toughest thing is - the only way to be a BIG rock star....to play in front of 20K people, is to put your tail between your legs, and go back.

So I guess it all boils down to how important that is to him. How much he enjoys the fame and big bucks of the big machine.

you are missing the family part. and i think he got some big bucks in that settlement although he probably could have gotten even bigger, but that's just my pure speculation.

while i'm sure he loves the adulation and big audiences and he may miss that eventually, him almost crying when talking about going home? that's more it for him i think. but i hope he can reconcile with them privately without going back to the band and endless oldies tours which at this point would be just a waste of his time.

Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey Buckingham Settle Lawsuit Over Dismissal From Band
“I’m happy enough with it. I’m not out there trying to twist the knife at all,” guitarist tells CBS This Morning of settlement

By DANIEL KREPS

Lindsey Buckingham revealed in a new interview that he has settled his lawsuit against his former Fleetwood Mac bandmates.

Following Buckingham’s surprise firing from Fleetwood Mac in January, the guitarist filed a lawsuit against the band in October, alleging breach of fiduciary duty and breach of oral contract, among other charges.

“Fleetwood Mac strongly disputes the allegations presented in Mr. Buckingham’s complaint and looks forward to their day in court,” a rep for the band told Rolling Stone in October.

However, in an interview with CBS This Morning that aired Saturday – the guitarist’s first television interview since his dismissal – Buckingham said that the lawsuit was quietly settled a couple weeks ago.

“We’ve all signed off on something,” Buckingham said of the settlement. “I’m happy enough with it. I’m not out there trying to twist the knife at all. I’m trying to look at this with some level of compassion, some level of wisdom.”

Buckingham did not elaborate on the terms of the settlement. Buckingham declined to comment to Rolling Stone. A rep for Fleetwood Mac did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

During the CBS This Morning interview, Buckingham talked about the “visceral” feeling of being dismissed from the band – reportedly at the behest of Stevie Nicks – and said that, since his firing, he hasn’t spoken to any of his former bandmates except for Christine McVie, who reached out to Buckingham recently.

“I have had, only in the last couple of weeks, I have gotten an email, which I expected to get, from Christine McVie,” Buckingham said; the two released their Buckingham/McVie album in 2017. “She wrote me an email and basically said, ‘Dearest Lindsey, just know that I had nothing to do with any of this. Know that I miss you so much.’ She said, ‘I believe deep in Stevie’s heart that she would like you to come home.'”

Despite Fleetwood Mac’s ongoing and never-ending drama, Buckingham said he would be open to reuniting with his former bandmates in some capacity, if the timing’s right. However, his dismissal has a sense of finality to it, he said.

“I’m pretty much figuring that I won’t because a lot of people who know how convoluted Fleetwood Mac’s politics have been will say two years from now they’re gonna… and I’m like, ‘I’m not so sure.’ You know, it’s something is a little different this time,” Buckingham told CBS This Morning.

In addition to the interview, Buckingham performed three songs – “Treason,” “Big Love” and “Turn It On” – as part of the show’s Saturday Sessions:

I hope $he's able to look in the mirror, somewhat, and see how insufferable $he's become.

I mean, $he won't, because her enablers are still telling her how great her poo smells.

HOW could Lindsey go back to THAT? If he does, there better not be any of the fake holding hands and all that crap!

I had the opposite reaction. It made my opinion of Christine drop. She stayed silent the entire time and claimed to be in London when the coup happened. She could have stopped it. Instead she was passive while even John and her looked at $$$$$ instead of the legacy of the band. Chris and John let Stevie control Mick. For her to reach out to him after settlement seems like a nice gesture and I am sure Lindsey appreciates it. But its a little too late IMHO. For Chris to say what she said about her and possibly even Stevie missing him really tells you the buyer's remorse they have. I think it finally sunk in what they did to themselves. No band member should have that much power. Lindsey states he has no idea why Stevie acted the way that she did but felt she was looking for reasons. IMHO it was clearly the Buckingham/McVie project where the rest of the band went on and recorded without her. It was a jealous rage the same kind when Stevie found out Lindsey and Chris wrote World Turning together. I think Chris and Stevie realize the cover band version of themselves they have become.

I second this. It makes me so sad. Yes, its good to hear she had no say and didn't agree, but why the f**k didn't she make a stand and say 'No! this isn't right. This isn't going to happen Stevie'???
If as it seems this really was all about his smirking (or really just a power thing based on years of animosity) and not related to a particular argument that occurred at Musicares, then Chris and the rest of the band should have had the moral compass to stand up for what was right. Instead they bowed to the Sith Lord.

Chris is 75 years old and she just got back in the band. She probably feels powerless or like she doesn’t have the right to tell anyone anything. How can she bitch about Mick or Stevie when she was one the reasons Fleetwood Mac never got another group album with all five of them? She knows she is lucky they let her back in the band.

If he does go back it will be to preserve the legacy of the band. That is really important to him.

He's a better person than I am. I would have said "NO WAY" to a reunion. He's very forgiving.

And of course Stevie wants him back. She sees that the tour isn't selling as well as it would have if Lindsey would have been there. She knows there's no chemistry between the rest of the band and Cambell & Finn. Just look at Hold Me in Phoenix, that was a one hot mess.
Not to mention the fact that she lost a lot of fans over this. It's sad really.

There won’t be any going back. This is the last tour for that band. And the only way Chris stops this is if she chose LB. They picked SN for this tour and that’s that.

“Him or me”. They chose her.

I know you are Stevie's friend but don't you think after Stevie complete's her next few tours she's going to want to ride the Fleetwood Mac train one more time, especially if LB returns? I imagine the world reaction at that time could mean FM filling up football stadiums again.

I feel that he shouldn't have talked about Christines e-mail. While I believe the part with her regrets, I don't think that she would write something like this about Stevie, that is not her place and not her style. And IF she did, it is not Lindseys place to make it public. To me, it looked like he was making that part up while he talked. In this section, I see the scheming side of Lindsey, not a good look.

lmao.

what reason would he have for making that up?

it's his letter, he can share however much or little he wants, regardless of what fans may think. and for all you know, Chris may have told him at the end of that letter - please share this. because she told the same about her having nothing to do with it in both CBS interview in April and RS interview that same day. people chose not to believe her then, and now not to believe him about her telling him that.

and then we have peeps like FM77 coming on here going - Chris chose side. she said in april that she didn't. and she said in her letter to LB that she did not. that she had nothing to do with it. and yet. of course those same peeps "in the know" were claiming that lawsuit was settled months ago - while it was on the docket for everyone to see, and apparently settled just a couple of weeks ago. :wavey:

Insults.. Hm, well you started this whole back and forth by calling my opinion bull****, proceeded to call David and I sexists- pretty insulting, especially when it wasn't warranted- that little thing you keep avoiding, that you're basically saying any negative opinion anyone has about Stevie is sexist, to which I merely pointed out how fundamentally flawed such an outlook is and then suggested such an illogical, extreme reaction might warrant some therapy.

Good.

As I've said from the outset, I want them to realize what a big mistake they've made and ask Lindsey back.

I don't even care if they tour. It could be a nominal gesture for all I care. I just want that magical entity that was the Rumours 5 restored. I want the wrong to be righted, and I don't mean monetarily. Like Lindsey, I want the "family" back together, dysfunctional as it may be.

I just don't want it to end like this.

If they ever did get back together (which is 98% unlikely to ever happen) it would be for the wrong reasons. It would be because Mick and Stevie knew they'd f****d up big time and were doing all they could to repair what's left of their ruined sh!tty reputation. They wouldn't be getting back together for the sake of the band or because they deep down loved Lindsey all along, but for their own selfish reasons.

Stevie and Mick recognizing their error and rectifying it *would* be to the benefit of the band and to its legacy.

"Love" each other? A *show* of unity is all we can ask of them. Behind closed doors, they can want to slit each other's throat for all we should care.

I am with Lindsey. It's about the band tarnishing its legacy. Lindsey is willing to let them repair the damage. That is to his credit.

P.S. He shouldn't have speculated about the possibility that Stevie is jealous of his family. Lindsey's openness betrayed him there.

He says his main disappointment is not that he'll never get to play with them again, but that their legacy is now tarnished. He wanted to fly to Hawaii to meet with Mick and Stevie to get past the issue, but they refused. "There was another agenda," he said. He also said Stevie saying "he goes or I go" is tantamount to Mick Jagger saying "either Keith goes or I go." I think the analogy is perfect.

Finally he says maybe they'll get their current experiment out of their system and ask him back, in which case, for the sake of their legacy, he'd agree. He is clearly the adult in the room.

The one mistake he makes is speculating that Stevie may be jealous of his family life. That's not something to wonder aloud about on national television.

The only tour of this five I would ever deign to patronize would be one in which, at every show, Stevie, Mick, John and Christine line up at the front of the stage at the beginning and end of each concert and say "We would like to apologize"--first to Lindsey and his family; then to the fans.

Just kidding. I honestly have no interest in that band anymore.

No, it just means the easiest thing to suspect is the same for anyone who doesn't know for sure, whether Lindsey or the fans. It doesn't make it any less speculative and therefore something best kept private (for the sake of how Lindsey comes off more than for Stevie's sake). That said, I'm sure these interviews–where they try to get you to say more than you should–are damn near impossible to navigate, and so I hold nothing against Lindsey at all.

I cautiously speculated early on in this nasty saga the theory that “we’ve been had” and that this may be nothing more than a publicity stunt to stage a Dance style reunion for the ultimate farewell cash grab. But, then the whole thing just got so REAL. I mean, you can’t deny a lawsuit. However, this “lawsuit” sure was settled quickly and everyone seems to be getting paid.

We may never know the whole story, but after reading this CBS interview with the quotes from Chris’ letter saying that “Stevie wants you home”—I’m thinking that this is all just a little too convenient. Then, after being supposedly stabbed in the back, this man is ready and willing to run back to Fleetwood Mac If and when they call.

Mark my words, Lindsey will be back in this band within 3-4 years (granted no one dies).

This I agree with 100%. This is where I'd like it to end. Peace and forgiveness. This band is too ****ing awesome to end on a sour note. Lindsey sees it. I think they all see it. I hope it comes to them all making amends and giving it one more go round. It can't end after this tour is over.

I actually feel sorry for Neil and Mike throughout all this.
I'm pretty sure they joined this band with the intention of it being a proper on-going concern. They must have long-passed the wtf moment when it dawned on them what the hell they'd gotten themselves into. If the other members make conciliatory advances towards Lindsey where does that leave them? Time band mark 2. Alternatively they might already have said 'I'm outta here as soon as this tour is over' and maybe that's why the band are now 'reaching out' to Lindsey.

I third this.....nice of Chris to send the email now but a little too late. Why didn't you at least send an email like John did at the beginning rather than radio silence for nearly a year

I wouldn't waste your feelings on those two.
Mike was only ever interested in a distraction involving jet planes, and Neil was looking to flog his solo album and get some dough and North America exposure, and he even said in an interview before the tour that "if the sh!t hits the fan" he won't care less and will return to his existing career and legacy.

The talk about "a fresh new band!" and "possible upcoming new material!" was standard Mick Fleetwood sales puffery.

I never felt, no matter what Mick spewed, Neil and Mike were in this more than for 1 tour. I feel like early on, Mike may have even alluded to as much. I never thought you’d get anything new out of them. I will admit I am eating my words because I never expected anything out of North America, so the few dates they announced for Europe are a surprise.
It’s got to be killing Mick, and probably Azoff to some extent, because while folks are flocking To see them, this is not their most successful tour, no matter how unique the set list is/or was when they Started. To end like this, is an embarrassing footnote for a great band.
Regardless of what side of this fiasco you are on, Lindsey came across totally sincere, heartfelt and humble in the interview, vs the band who really came across as a pack of liars from the second they opened their mouths. Even look at Mason’s body language and demeanor in the interviews. I went back and watched the April interview. It’s almost like he thinks they are lying to (purely my speculation I am reading his body language and I am by no means an expert)
I am curious to see who makes the next overture now. It will be interesting. My only concern ( well not only, but primary) is if LB does go back, I hope it’s not at the expense of his next album/tour, which he has said is likely late next year.

With the clues we have I would say Christine's statement to Lindsey about possible Stevie regret says a lot. IMHO I think this is why the setlist keeps changing because they cant find their footing on stage. It does not feel, sound, or look like Fleetwood Mac. This has never been played out before. When someone leaves i.e. Lindsey or Christine you fight to move on because you have no other choice. You cant look back because you move on with the band that you have. In this situation you have a pivotal band member want to play with the band but one band member used her ego about how many seats she fills take control of everything.

I too would like to see them patch things up on a personal note. I do think they really blew it on timing. After this tour I can't see them doing another huge arena run, I think age will be too big of a factor. They don't really have three years to wait until the next touring cycle. I could see them patching it up and doing a very limited run of shows in large markets and that's it. I don't even know If I would be interested in attending.

Now if Chris and Lindsey got back to making a follow up album, that is time well spent!!

It's probably safe to say that we who frequent this site are among the more devoted fans the band has, although we shouldn't kid ourselves that it's the casual fans who fill the seats and write the multi-million $$ pay cheques. If I were in the band and concerned about the legacy, I would pay attention to this. You have lost leagues of devoted fans over this! When it's a profit driven business, money is the only motivator. This is no different really than the CEO making millions and paying workers peanuts. This whole year has been a train wreck and by all appearances Lindsey is the only grown up in a room. Think about it, with behaviour like this in seniors in our own families, we'd be calling up the nearest retirement home. The best thing that could happen would be to cancel the rest of this cash grab tour, issue an apology to each other and the fans and call it a day. I feel sorry for Neil and Mike being attached to this and doing everything they can to make it work. Fans would be better to spend their money on a good show and catch Lindsey's tour. We can look forward to Lindsey's next album which will undoutedly be sincere and great.

https://www.vulture.com/2018/12/lindsey-buckingham-settles-lawsuit-against-fleetwood-mac.html

I'm not sure why Lindsey would share what I assume Christine emailed him in confidence. I'm glad they finally settled although that means we will probably never know the complete truth - just bits and pieces.

“We’ve all signed off on something,” he said “I’m happy enough with it. I’m not out there trying to twist the knife at all. I’m trying to look at this with some level of compassion, some level of wisdom.” He then twisted the knife a little by saying that Christine McVie emailed him and said she hates how he’s been treated and that it’s all Stevie’s fault. “She said, ‘I believe deep in Stevie’s heart that she would like you to come home.’”

And as I said previously, if Stevie didn't want to be in Fleetwood Mac with Lindsey then she should have opted out - I do love Stevie and would have been fine with another solo outing especially since I loved her last tour.

I love this interview because it gives LB a sense of closure, and a more logical point of view than the discombobulated CBS interview in April (which was vague and loose at best).

You also get to see how the superstar has become a bully (she always has been throwing her stardom around).

I agree with LB that she had an agenda and she would carry it out to impress upon her power to her little circle of staff, to the band, and to the fans.

Backfire! You are a bully, Stevie Nicks. And you try to project it onto others. I'm not being it. "Ain't gonna happen..."

Oh, and as far as the band getting back together as this 5: I think LB just took the high road. Anything is Possible.

As for Christine, she was put in a very odd position. There's a lot of $$ involved and it's business, also, she just came back to the band and really lost most of her power. And..... she's 75 and looks a bit frail. Leave this poor women alone already.

I have little clue as to what's going on. It feels like Lindsey is done for good. The hopeful part of me wonders if this whole "fight" was fabricated to build up publicity for the final tour; the end result being they'll get back together in a year or two's time just as he said in the interview. However that idea makes less sense to me considering the band (at their ages) simply doesn't have time to play around like that.

As I watched the interview and then watched it again, then thought back on the timeline, I came to some conclusions, many of which are contrary to my initial read when the suit was filed.

1) I am surprised that Fleetwood Mac's attorneys did not depose and then file for summary judgment to try to lessen some of Lindsey's claims. They were represented by smart, capable counsel. This tells me there was enough written documentation between the parties that left Fleetwood Mac and its members with substantial potential to be damaged under California's oral or common law contract statues. They didnt even try to damage Lindsey through the press to make him more malleable to a favorable settlement.

2) This settlement screams Azoff. Azoff was potentially very exposed here. He simultaneously represented the band and Lindsey. Lindsey had Azoff dead to rights for damage if he allowed him to lose potential earnings in order to earn more money himself. It is also a bad way to do business and lose respect of a broader client base. Azoff did not want his name and business damaged by a protracted suit that could have exposed he knowingly damaged a client.

3) Fleetwood Mac is earning less than expectation in 2018. For example in 2009 Fleetwood Mac sold out the Bok Center in Tulsa. 13,000 people and $1.28 million people on the 15th show of the tour. In 2018 tour opened at the Bok to a sold out crowd of 11,700 for 1.45 million. Remember with the time value of money 1.28 million in 2009 is 1.55 million in 2018 and 1300 less seats available is a 10% drop in tickets sold. Everyone got paid, made good money, but not as much money as they could. A failure of a manager to maximize earnings. So all of his clients lost on this change in membership.

4) To settle the suit this fast the offer had to be favorable to Lindsey. If he was seeking $12-14 million in lost wages for this tour plus damages to and for loss of future earnings, my guess is he dropped the future earnings claim and took 75-80% of the lost wages for the tour. $10 million range plus fees. This money would simply come from lowering the band guaranteed payout from the tour. But there is a good chance Lindsey made equal money from the tour compared to other members. If they each were to earn $12.5 million and gave back $2.5 million, they all end up at about $10 million. Also no way on earth that Finn and Campbell were getting equal shares. About half that each at best or another $10 million. See how all the numbers tie? This is all just experienced hypothesis, but one I think has reasonable foundation.

5) If I was his attorney I would have advised some of his CBS answers to be shaped different. Less specific the better so as to avoid any disparagement claim that I am sure is in the settlement. But those are near impossible to win, just more of a pain. FM has shown no desire to litigate, so the risk is limited.

6) If they asked Lindsey today to come play tomorrow; He would be there. I kind of think this is what Azoff is setting up....

I’ve been speculating that Lindsey’s comments about the Classic shows and subsequent performances were a large part of why he got sacked. I like the theory cbBen suggested, that the decision was made prior the already booked MusiCares, but had to wait until afterwards for contractual reasons.

My new theory is a combination of the two, that Mick, Stevie, and Azoff decided Lindsey was gone immediately after Classic East, but they had to wait until after MusiCares. My speculation is that it was a mixture of his comments about the Classic concerts and subsequent performances, disagreements over setlists, his continued lobbying for a new album, his insistence of dictating the creative direction of the band (just compare the pre-show music on this tour to the last few), perhaps there was a weariness over his avant-garde tendencies, his refusal to sign on the dotted line, and his request to delay the tour. Sure, he eventually walked away from that request, but it was too late by that point. Perhaps Stevie wasn’t lying when she said that they decided to move on after Lindsey asked for that delay.

Rereading some of Mick’s comments to Rolling Stone from last August, it seems clear that something was going on over the summer, especially when he was talking about current band drama and doing more obscure songs.

This also would mean that Tom’s death had no bearing on Lindsey’s firing. Sure, it meant Mike was available by the time they actually fired Lindsey, but there were other big name guitarists available if he wasn’t. Anyway, Mike may have been in a position to do both Fleetwood Mac and TPATH even if Tom hadn’t died. Tom had already said that the 2017 tour was likely going to be their last one. “I’m thinking it may be the last trip around the country. It’s very likely we’ll keep playing, but will we take on 50 shows in one tour? I don’t think so.” Mike could have very easily done both.

And the notion that Stevie wanted Lindsey gone to bring in Mike to somehow capitalize on Tom’s death seems laughable. Wouldn’t it have made more sense to delay the Mac tour and do a solo/tribute tour with the surviving Hearbreakers as her backing band, which would have also allowed Lindsey to do his project, negating that being a reason to part company?

Or, it could just be a setup for another reunion tour. Let’s face it, without new music, there was no compelling reason for the Rumours band to tour so relatively soon after the last tour. A lineup change makes this tour a bit more compelling, and makes a farewell/reunion cash grab tour with Lindsey, still without new music, more compelling.

Asked how he felt about playing a show explicitly geared to evoke memories of the old days, Buckingham cringed.

"It doesn't necessarily speak of the aspiration to present anything in the way that Fleetwood Mac would want to present it on its own terms," he said. "But we're all very close to Irving, so it was just sort of a 'Why not?'"

Pretty diplomatic for a rock star.

"I was going to put it less diplomatically, but I stopped myself," he said.

"Do the undiplomatic version," McVie chimed in. "What were you going to say?"

"I was going to say, 'Just close your eyes and take the money,'" Buckingham answered, and the soundstage rippled with laughter again.

“But if you look at what happened later [with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham], which is not part of this book, that’s pretty bizarre too, you know? The latter-day stories of Fleetwood Mac, that in truth continue to this day, you look at that and you think, “How the hell can any of this survive?” So I don’t know how to address that other than that it’s heartbreaking and you have to get over it. You have to let go of it. And so this book is about paying kudos to who these people are and not getting into the drama of what we’re talking about now.”

Are you thinking at all about the set list yet? Will it be very different than the last tour?

Yeah. I was in Italy recently and met Stevie out there. *Actually, she was in Capri and I was close to there. She said to me, “Let’s sit down and really listen to some stuff that sort of almost got forgotten.” So I know she’s already thinking she wants to do some things we haven’t done in years. I always think that Stevie and Lindsey should do a Buckingham Nicks song in the set. And have Christine should do a blues song. I hope it certainly won’t be the same show as we did before. *We always played nearly three hours, and we cut it back a little bit for the wear and tear, but we do over two hours. And when you got three singers, which is, like, three bands, really, to get that perfect set, it’s a trip.

While I do believe that Stevie wanted Lindsey gone well before Musiccares and the death of TP impacted her decision, I am quite sure Azoff and Mick didn't want Lindsey gone until it was clear it was the only way to keep Stevie. Fleetwood Mac is a large theater act without Stevie, not an arena act. Even so, Azoff knew that any change to the Rumours 5 would damage the brand and reduce some of the drawing power. He would be negligent if he advised anything else and if he did he certainly did not serve the best interest of his clients. Remember Lindsey was his client individually and he has a fiduciary and legal responsibility to him. Lindsey and Stevie were both individually represented by Azoff. Regardless of the conclusions you reach, thank you for putting together a thread with so many quotes and links, Steve.

I had forgotten that Lindsey's "close your eyes and take the money" remark had been prompted not by the interviewer--but by Christine!

And this quote of hers has always sat strangely with me:
"We were the only people in the band that actually played more than just a single note," the keyboardist said with a dry chuckle. "He and I play chords (...)."

Although she may equally be talking about John as bass player, the dry chuckle suggests that she's making a dig at Stevie (and it suggests to the world that they had been doing a whole lot of that while recording BuckMcVie).

The woman (er, sorry--person?) is a downright troublemaker!
Take that, jbrownsjr, with your calls to spare the 'fragile old lady' (paraphrasing).

common law contract statues.

Common law statutes?
What is going on over there in your legal system?

I kind of think this is what Azoff is setting up....

Who else is tired of this Azoff guy being insidiously ever-present?
He must be older than all of the FM members combined. Is he Emperor Palpatine?
And the idea that he's keen to make an extra million here or there--how much money do you need at a certain age?
To hear that this power-hungry mogul was screaming down the phone at Lindsey, who was his CLIENT (and the ARTIST). And that that phone call was essentially Lindsey's first and last notice about his expulsion. Just sickening!

I also note that, as of the time of that interview (which I can't watch since I'm not in the region), Christine was the only one to send Lindsey a substantive email. What about you, Mick? Got nothing to say to your 'great friend' who you had kicked out of the band and then went around lying about, just to keep your circus on the road and get your new shed built?

Where Lindsey gets all his perspective and graciousness about these guys and gals is beyond me.

I seriously doubt she's a troublemaker. She appears to be trying to keep the peace and build a bridge. And like most people placed in that position, she's not doing a great job of accomplishing it.

Remember that when she was working with LB Stevie would call her and ask if LB was "being a good boy." Rather than Christine being the trouble maker, it's far, far more likely she--as the other songwriter and front person--is placed in a VERY awkward place, negotiating the LB/SN quarrel which, according Mick paraphrasing Christine, should have been resolved years ago.

If you're ever in a family or close-friend situation where two people are constantly at each other's throats, it places all the others involved in delicate situations. The situation is even more complex if you love each of those warring factions equally--yet differently. Christine has significant bonds with both LB and SN and shouldn't have to take sides in their ongoing inability to reconcile. Do I largely blame Stevie? Yes, but Lindsey is not innocent in all this.

Sorry, I said that with tongue in cheek.
I don't imagine for a moment that she's ever 'intending' to cause trouble, of all things trouble between those two. (As you point out, it would have made decades of her life more tolerable were Stevie and Lindsey either getting along better or not working together at all.)

On the other hand, her demeanor and comments in interviews and on stage have always come across to me as "British Aunt Christine lounging in the kitchen with a cup of tea and a biscuit, smirking while she quietly dishes out a some scathing aspersions about the loony neighbors with a guilty chuckle." And as a result, even when she talks "in the eyes of the world" she seems to me to be in her own little world, which for example resulted in egging Lindsey on to make this (supposedly) troublesome comment.

And if/when it happens, they will make a huuuuuuuge deal of the reconciliation and "Landslide" will cease being about Hurricane Katrina or Hillary Clinton's bid for presidency or Tom Petty's death and be about rock's most dysfunctional team's unshakable bond. Stevie will say "I believe Lindsey's return to the band was the result of all the fans collectively wishing for his return--the universe speaking..."

For years, FM fans were compelled to choose between Peter Green's band or the Rumours lineup. Then, we all struggled to pick a side regarding Bob Welch's lawsuit and the RRHOF snub. Then a smaller but vocal subset of fans bemoaned Christine's return as the deathknell for Buckingham Nicks-focused Mac. Then we debated over whether Buckingham McVie was really a FM record. Through it all we argued with one another over the prospect of a new album and whether or not new music was still important. Through it all, we also debated as to whether Lindsey was truly physically abusive to Stevie and/or Stevie verbally and physically abusive to him. Tours continue to come and go. No new music is made. The fighting escalates. The managers spin. The press gobbles it all up.

And, well, I really love Otis Span.

Mick, John, and Christine were not. Oh the tangle web we weave...

He is being SO honest in interviews lately. No canned responses and I LOVE it.

BUCKINGHAM: I did this thing with Christine last year, which was actually a really nice album. We had a ball taking it out on the road. Initially, the idea was that maybe we do a Fleetwood Mac album. She was still not in the band, but Mick and John and I had gone in with Mitchell Froom and cut some songs. So a few of the things of mine were already there, and of course when we got to that point and tried to engage Stevie in that idea, she didn’t want to do it.

STEREOGUM: Didn’t want to do an album?

BUCKINGHAM: No. And I’m the one who gets fired, right?

STEREOGUM: I read you haven’t spoken to any of them since then.

BUCKINGHAM: I haven’t spoken to any of them. Once we signed some papers a few weeks ago, I did hear from Christine in an email, as I expected to. I know Mick would probably like to, but I think he’s too embarrassed and just a little too weak-willed to do it. I won’t hear from Stevie because it was all her trip anyway. Again, I just have to forgive them because it’s really just Stevie being so needy for a certain kind of attention and maybe not wanting to compete with the vitality that I have.

Totally agree. He’s got nothing to hide, no need to sit on edge awaiting a response. He’s successfully refuted the bands comments from April about why he’s not with them. In settling the lawsuit, and these 2 recent interviews has successfully answered the question, and the lawsuit getting settled refutes the bands claims. His mentioned comments specifically made by people (Azoff) so clearly he’s aware if any of his (LB) comments are untrue, he’s going to hear from band management. He’s pushed the envelope a bit with some of his remarks, good for him. He seems to be in a settled place and I am almost wondering if his not trying to “get” the band to actually respond to him

The man was fired and lied about by her on national TV, and dropped from all contact with them. I'd suggest he can say what he likes; as it happens, he's just speaking (what he sees as) hard truths that no one else would dare tell her, and with no other way to get through to her. He's like Harry truthspeaking to Voldemort at the end, trying to save his soul. But more importantly, he's defending and asserting himself, so good for him.

He comes off as someone who was wronged, is looking for answers in the time that's left, and above all is (inexplicably) forgiving. But I guess he's done with being a reticent pushover in terms of the public record.

Agreed, this was easily the most interesting and honest interview we have read from a current or past member of Fleetwood Mac in a long time.

Lindsey has been slandered, had his contributions to the band marginalised, and has for close to 16 years since SYW had Stevie trash him in the press; without ever stooping to that level. Quite frankly, everything Lindsey is quoted as saying or waxing lyrical about are ideas that have been floated by the FM fan community. If anything, this goes someways to justifying some of the opinions held around these parts. Furthermore, if the band had not froze him out do we really think he would be making these claims? They brought this all on themselves.

This article feels like Lindsey is talking to us his fans! I'm sure his detractors will whine loudly, but he will walk away “so fast that palm tree tops will fall on his head”

Yeah, definitely need to phrase that with a "maybe"! (<-- sarcasm!)

Plus, you think that Lindsey, after all these decades with Stevie since high school, wouldn't have insight into some basic hallmarks of her psyche??

If you're referring more about the "vitality" remark, that just comes across as Lindsey-speak for his creative output etc., in the context of telling the musical world that they were all doing a Fleetwood Mac album but Stevie refused to contribute, and then proceeded to orchestrate his removal, replace him with her best buddy, and pin the blame for it on him Lindsey. Considering this explosive context, the man is being restrained in his discourse.

I say let the victims have their moment.

Well I think you have a point. But his conjecture is probably due to the band not speaking to him, right? If Lindsey feels he exhausted every avenue that was available to him (aside from flying to Hawaii as he said he almost did) then maybe he's attempting to raise a new dialogue between them and him. PR training for what? To please YOUR sense of decorum? He was fired by a group of people that he has known for 40-50 plus years without even a phone call from any of them. Not even a written message. People who collectively had worked together to enrich each other beyond their wildest dreams. Essentially everything he has said has proven to be factual. They lied to the public about the reasons, they were caught dead to rights in a carefully constructed lawsuit that they were forced to settle without so much a deposition or any additional legal filings or hearings. Lindsey has very good lawyers who knew exactly how to craft an eight figure lawsuit and reach a successful outcome. I am sure they have advised him as to what he can and can't say post settlement.

In reality Lindsey is hurt. His ego and pride were damaged badly. Basically told he wasn't needed anymore by group of people who he believed wanted and needed him. That would hurt anyone and not one of them thought enough of him to even have a five minute conversation with him to tell him why they had reached this decision and that arrogance cost them millions. If he wants to spout off a little, I think he is entitled to do so.

On the other hand, the second the idea is floated about a reunion he is breaking the land speed record to get back to them. There is a very very real probability that we now see the five of them on stage together. How oddly fitting it will all be.

I don’t see how they could get back together again.
Mick and Stevie ,especially Stevie, would have to eat an awful lot of humble pie.
I mean she said that she never wants to perform on the same stage with him.
How she going to square that and welcome Lindsey back.
Mick, yeah, for the sake of cash in his pocket, but Stevie apologising in public....
Can’t see that happening.

Agreed.

Having the chance to meet and chat with him two nights ago, he really believes she is not writing or creating at all anymore and that's why she won't do an album because she's got nothing to contribute (new songs).
He said the songs on extended play were a total attempt to "woo" Stevie back into the studio, "and she just went NO!" He imitated how crankily she said NO! He feels she doesn't want to put her non-existent or not very good new songs up against his (or Chris's now). He's tread carefully for how many years now to get her to record with them all again. Wrote songs about her, to her, in her key, agreed to her demands for outside producers, etc......nope. Nothing from her but cash grab oldies tours.

And yet he said over and over to people at the m&g that he would go back again.....

I too thought it was odd he went there, saying Stevie might be jealous of him having a family and kids. Coz Chris doesn't have kids either. That seemed a low blow-- but I think it speaks to how badly hurt he's been by this whole thing.

I did however think his statement that "she is living her professional life" or something close to that to be perfectly reasonable and true. She's never made any compromises for any partner that meant she couldn't do what she wanted whenever she wanted.

He wasn’t romantically involved with Christine, and he was specifically addressing why Stevie might have been jealous. I agree it comes off as insensitive, but he probably wasn’t even thinking of that. I didn’t make that connection until reading your post.

I can’t believe anyone legitimately thinks there is/ever was a chance for them to get back together...
Historically whenever bands break up or “go on hiatus” they often say things like that. Look at just about any boyband/girlband that has ever split up. But it rarely ever actually happens. It’s just something they say because it sounds nice. I’m sure Lindsey would’ve liked the idea of them getting back together which is why he said it, but it was never gonna actually happen and he knew it. He never would’ve filed that lawsuit if he legitimately thought there was a real chance to reunite. After all that’s happened it’s entirely unrealistic. And then you take into account their ages and the idea of a reunion becomes even more of a pipe dream.

I'm not so sure whether he really means it or is making it clear that not only was he not responsible for the current mess, he won't be the one who stood in the way of making it right and going out properly with the Rumours 5 when they don't get together for a final proper goodbye.

Again, I just have to forgive them because it’s really just Stevie being so needy for a certain kind of attention and maybe not wanting to compete with the vitality that I have. This is just so totally Lindsey, passive-aggressive and mean while softly spoken. I can imagine how fed up the band was with dealing with him. It's over and he knows it now, no need to hide his true colors anymore.

Lindsey: contains frustration and speaks softly

Stevie fans: "Lindsey is the one with the issues! Praise be the Urchin Queen!"

Hey, we get that he's not perfect. But the notion that the rest of the band--other than Stevie--is "fed up with dealing with him" is wishful thinking. She forced their hand.

I agree totally in aggregate, but I also don’t think anyone affiliated with FM, particularly Mick and Azoff, thought there would be this much backlash. Even though you can’t compare the 2 scenarios, I could see in their minds walking thru how successful the band was without Christine, why couldn’t they without Lindsey. Added bonus, 2 credible talented guitarists in their own right...Lindsey who? They completely misjudged what a core part of the band he really is/was. I could absolutely see them trying to score one last tour. Look at how fast another tour happened once Christine came back. I could totally see them sitting Stevie down and saying we did what you asked, you owe us this. Even Stevie, in the dark recesses of her mind, when all her hangers on have gone home, would acknowledge this little plan didn’t work out as well as anticipated

I loved seeing this interview. THANK YOU for the links!

The one mistake he makes is speculating that Stevie may be jealous of his family life. That's not something to wonder aloud about on national television.

It's interesting because when I was reading the thread and written comments prior to watching the interview, I reluctantly thought the same thing... reading some of his answers (in written form) gives them a harsher tone and I kind of cringed (for the record, I am definitely TeamLindsey!).

However as soon as I had time to watch/listen to him answering, they take a much softer, honest, from-the-heart kind of tone and delivery. It's hard to criticize. As someone else posted already, it does deliver as if he's been searching for answers as to why his very presence could offend SN so much and perhaps that is a truthful reason why. It's reasonable that he should think these thoughts out loud when finally given a platform to discuss it all.

I guess that is often the case with quotes pulled out of context and typed up (for anyone), but for me personally it's interesting to compare my own reactions. Just random thoughts here, I don't have much to add, sorry...

I loved the interview. Huge kudos to LB for being so gracious amongst such betrayal.

You nailed it. I think she is completely jealous of him and his wife (just like some shippers). She does not have a life like Lindsey or even Christine. They don't walk around thinking they are superstars. They are not entitled diva like idiots. And when you walk around with entitlement and know it's eventually coming to an end... well as you say. LB represents something she will never have, a family, love from people that are actually involved with him other than a paycheck. I love his comment about involving himself with people who actually care about what he's doing AND not just collecting money. (yes, I know they all love money... but he actually wants to back it up with creativity)

Her life is mainly superficial... and to add insult to injury, she couldn't even create new music for the new album. She's a sad lonely person that took this band over to validate her pathetic life and stab a knife in LB's back.

Why? because he doesn't buy her big bag of bull***. And it's coming clear, neither does Christine.

Yes—and so many of us have recognized this for years. As someone in this thread recognized earlier, most of his comments merely reflect what we’ve surmised ourselves. In that sense—and in other senses—his sudden candor is refreshing and welcome. What’s more, he’s no longer holding back by reciting long-winded, canned speeches that only obliquely hint at his true feelings. I applaud him. And I don’t hold it against him if he returns to the band. He could only help matters at this point.

I agree with your first paragraph, because I think one could argue of Lindsey being guilty of also wanting attention.

Anyway, the point I wanted to make was that as far as I know, we still don't know exactly what he did to make Stevie so furious. When Azoff called him and said, in his words, "You've done it now!", WHAT was it? The interviewer asked Lindsey if he knew what it was, and Lindsey claimed he didn't know. This alludes then, that Stevie went off the handle, for no reason whatsoever, and the rest of the band went along with that illogical thinking. I have a hard time believing that. He did SOMETHING. I hope to hear Stevie's side at some point.

I have not read every article, so if I'm missing something, please let me know.

Jamie, Stevie was plotting it with Mick and Azoff etc. from some time in 2017 but they had to wait until MusiCares was finished to pull it off. That's the prevailing theory that makes most sense from the totality of all the information at hand, particularly since 2017 onward.

There was no "big wrong thing at MusiCares" that Lindsey did, as much as the occasional diehard Stevie defender may wish to fantasize there was. He smirked? Christine and Mick were waltzing!

And AncientQueen, Lindsey himself makes it clear in at least the Stereogum article that it was Stevie, not the rest of the band, who wanted him gone. I feel sorry for any diehard Stevie supporter who feels obligated by their loyalty to Stevie into inconceivably twisting all the existing information to make it appear otherwise.

His comments regarding not knowing what he’s done open up the opportunity to hear from Stevie and/or Mick as to why his smirk was the straw that broke the camels back, and Mick and Christine waltzing in mock of her was okay. I would agree, it makes sense there is more to it. But why lie about it in April. In other words, let’s hear it Stevie. If nothing is forthcoming, we can surmise the Rumours 5 lineup was taken down singlehandedly, by one woman’s temper tantrum. And that is extremely sad

Be honest, you don’t really care about their legacy, you’re just mad that Stevie won. You would have had absolutely zero problem if Stevie had been fired. So, it’s not really about this “legacy” of Fleetwood Mac.

The fact that he was willing to go on without her when it wasn’t clear to him that Azoff meant he was out tells me that “the legacy” wasn’t especially sacred to him, either.

I wanted a last album with the 5. Really badly... Yes, I loved BuckVie... but I alway thought Stevie would come around and they'd record after the BuckVie tour. Boy, was I wrong!!!

Fleetwood Mac to me would be McVie's/Fleetwood with Lindsey.. or Stevie. I would love for them to strip down. But, we both know that won't happen. I think I would have less problem with just Mike replacing LB .. (had LB left on his own) And having the 2 ladies carry the rest. Put them to work.

And I blame LB as much as anyone for using processors and NOT STRIPPING DOWN, and using extra tracks/samples. I guess it is what it is.

I initially thought this might be the case but several months have passed, Lindsey has openly criticized the band's decision without a hint of irony or guilt, and no one has challenged him. This more than suggests to me that he didn't do anything tangible or concrete. She was just tired of working with him because she couldn't get over past arguments and problems. Moreover, Lindsey has been lobbying for new music for the past five or six years. The more he does this--and the more it's apparent that Christine herself is willing to do this--the more she has ratcheted up the anger and the bitterness.

To many of us, it's become clear that one of the major issues here is precisely what he has just identified: she is jealous of his creativity and continued vitality. I seriously doubt she has written anything new in a long, long time. Does she have a song left? If she doesn't that in itself is not a problem. Joni Mitchell experienced the same thing. However, Stevie won't come clean about it or admit it. Instead, she is hell bent on painting him as a jealous villain. And she didn't say one supportive thing about the Lindsey Buckingham/Christine McVie album.

Or, just like when Christine willingly left, he was keen to keep going with all those who wished to, which indeed would have been a much more appropriate, ubpeat end to the band, not this ugly, petty, childish firing business- that is what has tarnished the legacy, and its just silly to pretend its not true.

He has his own dignity to lose. He's basically calling Stevie a loser. That reflects far worse on him than it does on her.

Well he's known Stevie for what? 50 years? In his mind he knows her, and knows her well. He probably thinks he's calling a spade a spade. And from the sounds of that particular comment he made about comparing their vitality, he probably knows how to provoke Stevie into a response. The reality is, none of them are angels, and they've all made mistakes. I feel this whole thing doesn't reflect nearly as poorly on Lindsey as it does the rest of the band.

First time tour of that combo, I thought it was pretty respectable. You like apples and oranges, as of late.

Having said that, I wish her success would leave us with the four. But, she needs FMac for her ego. Apparently, her solo didn't "embolden" as much as I would have liked. Unless, she wanted to record with the other 4.

I absolutely get that. It’s all in the brand, and Stevie has worked hard and consistently at building her own viable brand independent of Fleetwood Mac. If LBCM had been called Fleetwood Mac and they had toured with another major artist, I have no doubt it would have been on par or more successful as Stevie’s.

But, the reality is what it is.

I feel this whole thing doesn't reflect nearly as poorly on Lindsey as it does the rest of the band.

Mick, John, and Christine were not. Oh the tangle web we weave...

I am 101% sure that the Classic East / West comments had 0.0 to do with his ouster.

I am also now equally sure that these 2018-2019 dates will be the only performances for this version of the band. Sorry, Steve...I know you prefer it to the Rumours 5 line up.

Agreed 101%!

not necessarily - we have no idea whether or not they are - it was never tried. but it's certainly riskier without her than without one of the other 4. Fleetwood Mac is a brand name that sells. bucket list item to put a notch on someone's belt. many couldn't care less who is in the band. just fans like people on these boards care for one or the other or several members - or all 5. Buckingham McVie who nobody heard off were mostly filling sheds in summer 2017 so why would Fleetwood Mac brand name fill less?

Replacements at this stage of the game--no matter what their pedigree--are laughable, or weep-worthy--your choice.Fleetwood Mac is a megalith. It doesn't matter who's in the group if all they're going to do is play sports arenas and build the set around the white album and Rumours.

Rhiannon, Say You Love Me, Landslide, I'm So Afraid, Dreams, Don't Stop, Go Your Own Way, The Chain, You Make Loving Fun, Gold Dust Woman. How many more solid-gold tours of this music does one need? I ran out of steam awhile back. When you're hearing Rhiannon for the millionth time, who cares who's playing the signature guitar lick? It could be Rudy Vallee for all I care. Being subjected to Rhiannon or Don't Stop again is like being forced to watch the 300th installment in the superhero movie franchise. Who TF could possibly care? Only the very young, I suppose, or the very new to the band's shtick.

Or, he was like “Hey, did you see what I did with the Eagles? Just get a big enough name and most people won’t care…”

Remember Lindsey was his client individually and he has a fiduciary and legal responsibility to him. Lindsey and Stevie were both individually represented by Azoff. Mick, John, and Christine were not. Oh the tangle web we weave...
So Lindsey could sue him? Bet that scared the crap out of Azoff.

Also, when did Azoff start representing Stevie?

I am 101% sure that the Classic East / West comments had 0.0 to do with his ouster.
Glad you’re so certain. But, you have to admit Lindsey has been talking a lot about Azoff, and it’s not necessarily favorable.

It isn’t. Nor is what I think might explain why.

Point taken.

And I don’t disagree with the criticism of the band’s same ole hits approach. I would have loved new music—but not by people who were hired to play covers.
