View Full Version : Anyone here who still really likes Stevie Nicks?

I was shocked and angry when FM threw out Lindsey Buckingham. I'm not on board with the 2 new guys. I also think that the live shows kinda suck, some of the songs miss energy and spirit. But still - when I see photos or fanvids, she is still the Stevie Nicks I followed since 1979, and I still love her, it is like it is.

I also have the following points to make:

- Stevie has not made her dislike of Lindsey a secret in the last years, it was clear that she wouldn't want to work with him, plus - she has always been the one who had to deal with the most aggression from Lindsey. I'm actually more angry with every other member of the band what happened. Stevie was at least kinda honest about the band-problems.

- She is a great entertainer, her voice may be toast, but her ability to shine on-stage is still there.

- We don't know what happened, it'S possible that stevie has lost all contact to reality, but it is also quite possible, that Lindsey did something noone wants to talk about and that it was a whole-band-decision after all. I can't see why the benefit of the doubt works in Lindseys favour only.

- IF Stevie flexed her muscle, set an ultimatum and got what she wanted, she now DEALS WITH IT. She IS center of attention and carries the show, carries FM now and she does it well, much better than I anticipated. She works hard for her band now, I missed that during OWTS. For me, it is much more fun to see a happy Stevie who actually cares about being onstage with FM for a change.

- FM is a band fronted by two women and that is only fair, given the success of Christines and Stevies contributions.

- The raging misogyny here and elsewhere makes me really root for Stevie. The whole "How dare she, she is just a woman", "goat" and far worse, things people should really be ashamed of is so telling and says much more about the contributing "fans" than about Stevies abilites.

So, since the "who dislikes Stevie" thread is such a success, maybe some people would like to contribute here, creating a positive place for a change.

Her celebrity is a hard pill to swallow these days. I am impressed by her drive to keep alive in the public eye. And she still belts and she still tells funny stories. She is, in a word, entertaining.

But her refusal to record new music with the band, her flimsy reasons for not recording new music with the band, her use of her celebrity as a weapon, and her inability to forgive and forget past traumas (whatever they might be) are both disappointing and sad. I feel more pity for her than anger. If she does get the RRHOF induction, it still won't be enough for her. Something is broken inside. Or, in her own words, "something in [her] heart died last night..."

As for personally, I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt and presume the best. As I said elsewhere, my main issue is with the band for carrying on without Lindsey.

Where was this said?!

You present it as a common theme, repeated often by those who criticize her; I can't remember it being said - in any form - even once. I haven't even seen it "elsewhere" (assuming you mean fan groups on social media) and while I'm sure there are some who say this because misogynists exist, it is hardly "raging" whenever this is discussed.

Believe me, I wouldn't have stood for such talk.

I really like Stevie Nicks.

Her music has been an integral part of my life from childhood to well over middle age.

Her songs pierce my heart more than anyone.

She has been generous charities (could be more though) and supports the troops.

She’s timeless and one of the greatest living singer-songwriters.

I respect her decisions, including not to record with FM.

I don’t like how she and the band handled Lindsey’s firing.

I would never see FM but I would see her solo again in a heartbeat.

Seriously I’ve not seen this either. I dislike Stevie and her recent actions for a variety of reasons. Not one of them has to do with her gender. Quite honestly, if Lindsey had done the same exact thing to her, I would be just as appalled at him.

The Destiny Rules documentary did the woman no favors in my view - but once the Say You Will tour was long over and she went on to bash Lindsey for the album and tour, I really lost any respect I had for her. As she keeps getting older, she honestly just comes across to me as a bigger and bigger narciscistic jerk.
She has become a bitter old woman who like most narcissists, finds a way to make every single event in some way about them.

I've always liked Madame Nicks. She's a clumsy wordsmith but a superb rock singer whose style is all hers. I always loved the effect she created on the stage, but middle age (hers, not mine) compromised that effect for me. I think Steve Real absolutely ruined her singing voice. He ought to be caned. The damage he did to her voice is irreparable.

Firing LB was an act of cowardice and stupidity—he was the last hope they had of ever again creating something enduring. But even he has deteriorated from the glories of his youth. But everyone in the band, not just Stevie, is responsible for that move.

It's amazing how much good will as a singer-songwriter-performer Stevie has built up in me—so much so that even though she can't sing anymore, can't perform dazzlingly anymore, and apparently can't write a decent tune anymore, I still "frame" her in my mind as The Great Stevie. That'll never wane, even if it means that she forces me to live in the past.

You didn’t need to do this research but kind of shocking what a quick search reveals. Misogyny is all over this discussion board - anyone with a brain knows it. A shame that a positive thread like this is already headed down a nasty road but people like Homer can’t help themselves. For some reason they have made this all their life. It’s an obsession that makes it impossible for others to have an enjoyable conversation.

I think Steve Real absolutely ruined her singing voice.

I had to look up who this is, and found the following interview with this quote: "‘Cheaper Than Free’ may be the best song [Dave Stewart or I] ever writes."
https://americansongwriter.com/2011/09/gold-dust-woman-a-qa-with-stevie-nicks/4/

I appreciate the desire to promote one's recent work, but holy smokes what a lack of perspective.

For what it's worth, I think she sings brilliantly on The Dance. That may be the end of the road for her as a truly great vocalist. Her singing on the 1998 tour is also pretty strong. By 2003, she's demonstrated a considerable decline that has only continued.

I basically just come here to see what might be new with FM and Stevie, and try to stay out of the "discussions." Things are continually hijacked and the shocking barrage of insults and innuendo directed at Stevie and Mick and other posters coming from many here should have been stopped at some point. Continually calling people whores, goats, hags, and even twats is basically wrong, in my book but not the moderators.

As for "liking" Stevie I don't know what that means, really. As a person? As a singer? As a performer? I don't know. I love a lot of her music, I am continually frustrated by her lack of recording and her penchant for faux "rock".

With all due respect to this perfectly understandable point of view, I strongly disagree, and urge moderators not to intervene.

I always try to put across my point of view respectfully but disagreement, combativeness, and–short of cursing–even crass language from others are just fine with me.

I generally don't like to see conversation stopped or censored, and certainly not because people are trashing rock stars who will never even read the comment at issue.

I answered in the other thread about my excitement for her as an artist had left the building. I do still really love the Stevie of yesteryear from joining the band through to about the Wild Heart and then (mostly in hindsight) high points such as the early 90's killer vocals, late 90's Dance and Enchanted and parts of In Your Dreams and 24 K. Since then though- total meh. Her recent vocals and refusal to record have taken her off the pedestal I so proudly kept her on all these years. I agree with what many have said the refusal to record boils down to the insecurity around her lost gifts in the lyric and melody dept. although as far back as Tusk I remember a ridiculous statement she made that if the album didn't sell she'd be disappointed in all of us, including those who shelled out what was then a lot of money. Truth be told, she needs to call it a day when this tour ends.

Those are angry at Stevie, but they aren't in the vein of "how dare she, she's just a woman" that you stated was prominent earlier. None of them are outraged that a woman is in charge. They are outraged that STEVIE is in charge.

The "goat" thing is tiresome and juvenile, but my impression was that it was a mockery of her voice, and not related to gender.

I despise the term "b!tch" but not because I think it's misogynist (unless you think all gender-specific insults are). That said, I would absolutely love it if it never got used again.

As for the ones you bolded as the most obviously misogynist:

The Destiny Rules documentary did the woman no favors in my view - but once the Say You Will tour was long over and she went on to bash Lindsey for the album and tour, I really lost any respect I had for her. As she keeps getting older, she honestly just comes across to me as a bigger and bigger narciscistic jerk.

"Did the man no favors" is a very common expression. Are you upset that he changed it to "woman" because Stevie is female? I actually think that's appropriate. It would sound odd to leave it as "man."

She has become a bitter old woman who like most narcissists, finds a way to make every single event in some way about them.

So he should have said "bitter old person"? People don't talk that way. We typically use gender specific nouns when we know the gender of the person we're discussing.

These examples of so-called misogynist language are petty feeble, frankly.

I believe the "If she had just had children she probably wouldn't be such a bitter hag" comments a couple of people made fall into this bucket. As if anyone would have made this statement about any of the men in the band if they had chosen to forgo parenthood.

Now this one I will grant you. I remember objecting to it at the time as well. Ugh. So, I stand corrected on that score.

A jerk is a jerk.

Why couldn't a female be as much of a jerk as a man might be? That's equality in my book.
If anything, we are all being good feminists and giving Stevie her just rights to Jerk-dom, female or no.

Oh right, that again, I made that comment once I recall, she should have had that baby. I still stand by it. In the sense that becoming a parent, for ANYONE, in my opinion and experience, is a development unsurpassed.
But of a man I could never say: "he should have had that baby", due to the fact of non-existent male pregnancy. Thus far anyway.

Remember how she said she was going to adopt a little girl? Even that; she should have done it. Rather than just carrying around those yippy dog accessories.

So here's me, maintaining my opinion that, had she been forced to put another person before her spoilt princess self in her life by way of becoming a parent--- I honestly feel she would have aged much more palatable.

But I also believe that of men. However, here we were discussing Stevie Nicks. Who happens to be a woman. Sue me. I could not very well call her a dog. Or a man. :]

This is exactly how I feel. I was a big fan, but I wasn't so in love with her that I excused past and present behavior. The same goes for any artist I like. I can really like a singer or Actor but not appreciate when they do things that I feel are wrong. With SN there are some fans who truly view her as some god like figure and they have an excuse for any negative thing you bring up including the events of this year. And that is where some of us differ. I can still like her music but not the person she has become or accept what happened this year and be ok with it.

Sasja, in my view, a millionaire was fired from a rock band, so now he is on a successful solo tour and suing the band for millions of dollars. I just can't get outraged like some people are. However, I am very fierce about injustices like white supremacy, neo-Nazis, and equal rights for all people. When things like that are on the rise in America, I simply won't with the same fervor condemn a rock band for firing one of their members. And listening to FM helps me to escape from those issues just a little bit.

The reactions to the firing are extreme in many cases and have been twisted into really ugly stuff about the rest of the band. It is totally beyond me how anyone could spew so much vitriol about Stevie and Mick in particular for like ten months after the firing!?. Injustice? Get a grip. As has been said already, there is too much real injustice in the world. Take your noble sense of justice and fairness and go out and apply it to something that matters. Haunt sites where there is an audience to hear your sentiments about abused minorities or lack of funding for health care or bullied or abused kids. Or seek professional help. I daresay people can be outraged at the band's treatment of Lindsey and simultaneously outraged at other world issues. As for time spent, posting one's disdain takes no longer than posting one's defense.

That is where I'm coming from and how I stand in the world. Doesn't mean I'm wrong or right, that's just my viewpoint.

Thank you for the elucidation, bwboy. And I am glad to read your world stances!:thumbsup::thumbsup:
It's a valid point, his being a millionaire. But would you also not consider him
an artist having been cut off from a huge, if not the main, medium (band-form) of the expression of his repertoire and part of his life work? For reasons of, as it seems, merely pettiness and spite?

The suing recourse he has now taken seems to be a last resort one, more to get their attention since attempts to reach out to his former band mates all met with a wall.

Again, to myself, a fiercely loyal person who also values that highly in the people around in my own life, how sad that he has been treated like this. Without substantiated reason.

I do think Lindsey's expression of creativity is very importance to him, sasja. But considering Stevie was never going to record with him again, I don't think Fleetwood Mac was ever going to be a viable outlet for him to expend that positive creativity again. He can now focus on delivering new material as a solo artist.

I have no problem with Lindsey suing FM, and I think there's a great chance he'll either win or accept a substantial settlement. The band will be fine either way, they're not going to end up in subsidized housing as a result of this lawsuit  And while I agree with you this lawsuit is about how Lindsey feels he was treated by the band, I also acknowledge it's about money, too, and that's 100% fine with me. Lindsey and his family (and financial team) was expecting that income from the tour, and to have it yanked so suddenly and without warning would have an impact on them. He has every right to sue them.

I'm glad you feel loyalty to Lindsey and I have no problem with that. I love his music and I love their music, so I'm still loyal to them all to various degrees. I guess my irritation with some posters is the idea that I'm not truly loyal or I must not be a true Lindsey fan, or I would be just as outraged at what happened. The fact is, Lindsey's stock has risen immensely since he was fired, and we should all be thrilled for him! His tour is successful, he's giving high profile interviews, he's got lots of sympathy and support- and we'll be getting new music from him, and much sooner than if he were on a world tour. Plus, he'll get the money from said tour that he should have gotten, anyway. All things considered, that's an incredible silver lining for the man and his fans. So yeah, that tempers any outrage I might try to muster

Just because there is a "silver lining" as you called it, doesn't mean it was right. It was a s****y move, one you do NOT do without running the risk of people condemning such move. I choose to condemn that move, which is my choice. And I will not support a group or people who have such little respect for a bandmate, the legacy of their band, and the fans.

And remember, they have tried to cover this up and lie about it. That is so disrespectful to everyone. I will not support a group that would do that.

My choice is to be outraged, and you have your choice to not be outraged.

yikes. Please find one instance where I lobbed a criticism at Stevie based on her sex, or said anything remotely misogynistic about her.. Oh you can't? That's because my problems with her have nothing to do with her being a woman, and everything to do with her growing into the terrible person she's become. You do realize I used to love Stevie as a person/personality more than I did Lindsey.. People change. Not always for the best.

So according to you, there's nobody on this planet currently, or at any point in history that has ever cried sexism where it doesn't exist, and calling that out when its so painfully obvious, is misogynistic? Give me a break. We know where you stand- its not ok to criticize any woman, ever

I’m really angry at her right now but I’m still a fan. Always will be. I love her music and she’s one of my favorite songwriters. I’m not just mad at Stevie about the Lindsey firing, I’m mad at Chris, Mick and John too for agreeing to it. I have been spending a lot of time apart from FM and SN’s music until I calm down. Looking forward to whatever Lindsey has up his sleeve and that’ll probably help me cool down further.

Stop calling other posters misogynists. If you want to discuss sexism that band members have faced in their careers, fine, but stop analyzing the intent behind another person’s post. The label becomes a trump card, diverts conversation from the band topic at hand and devolves into namecalling. It’s a cheap way to undermine someone’s point without directly addressing the argument. You don’t need to psychoanalyze the views of people with whom you disagree.

The “you only say that because she is a woman” retort is overused and I am tired of the debate it creates. As we await the RRHOF decision, there are many gender discussions to be had, but keep them focused on the music industry, not other Ledgies.

Crying sexist will not be used as a tool to gain a debate advantage, here, nor will sexist behavior against other posters.

3 albums in 17 years, it's quite the pace!

74 - Buckingham Nicks
75 - Fleetwood Mac
76 - heavy touring
77 - Rumours
78 - heavy touring
79 - Tusk
80 - more touring
81 - Bella Donna and solo touring
82 - Mirage and Fleetwood Mac tour
83 - Wild Heart and solo tour
84 to 85 - Rock A Little recording
86 - Rock A Little tour and rehab
87 - Tango and start of tour
88 - Tango tour
89 - OSOTM and solo tour
90 - Behind The Mask and tour
91 - Timespace tour
92-93 - Street Angel recording and 2nd rehab stint
94 - Street Angel release and tour
95 - 96 - health recovery and early TISL work
97 - The Dance and tour
98 - Enchanted and tour

Basically for 24 years she did nothing but record, promote, tour and go to rehab. She’s had a longer career than many of her contemporaries and even in later years though her recording output has reduced she has toured pretty consistently.

I’d call that working her butt off.

100% agree. Not only does that happen on this board, it apparently happens in the FM milieu as well, what with the "email from Christine" and "Christine is in England" and so on and so forth. It was the behavior around her that made me most suspicious in regards to this entire situation. Nobody's gonna tell me that the person with the most hits and the longer tenure with the band had nothing to do with this—(the one who managed to get through HOW MANY guitarists? Didn't like Bob Welch, didn't like Dave Mason, etc and so on...how many times can this happen to Fleetwood/McVie/McVie and it's just bad luck for them? Looks like they couldn't get along with anybody well before Stevie Nicks showed up...)

Even if the band presented the firing to her as a "done deal" (which seems implausible), Christine could have responded as follows: "Whether this decision is reversible or not, just know I will not remain in the band unless it includes both Stevie and Lindsey. It changes nothing if the person quits, is fired, gets sick, or dies. I won't call this thing Fleetwood Mac without them both."

Saying as much would have preserved the band's good name, or at least absolved Christine of being a part of tarnishing it. It may well also have kept the band in tact.

Perhaps Stevie approached Christine ahead of time to get her assurance that she would not take such a position. If so, Christine shouldn't have given it.

She wouldn’t have said something like that, though.

Let’s say she quit. What next? Wait a year or two for Lindsey to finish his obligations? SHE’S 75!!! Since coming back, she’s done an album, three tours, sold her mansion and condo, and moved into a bustling London neighborhood. She’s clearly raging against becoming isolated again.

But the notion she’d go against the band her fortunes have been tied to for over 50 years is laughable. She’s not going to pick Lindsey over Mick and John.

PS: After 6 months or so, I've finally forgiven her- I love her again. (Chris, not my wife).

Basically for 24 years she did nothing but record, promote, tour and go to rehab. She’s had a longer career than many of her contemporaries and even in later years though her recording output has reduced she has toured pretty consistently.

I’d call that working her butt off.

True. He should be proud of that album. He and Sandy Stewart are the only two people responsible for her even being able to appear on that album. Without Seven Wonders, she wouldn't of even had a single the label could release. But alas here we are 30 years later and people forget these details.

If Lindsey was such a superlative producer, he probably could have done much better with Stevie's demos. Welcome to the Room..Sara is fine, but it could have been epic. The song he chose not to use was better on Stevie's solo album. I'm looking at you JULIET! Look what he did to Smile At You on Say You Will. I don't call that genius.

I know I'm one of the very few, but I love the "Smile at You" version on "Say You Will" over the demo - by far. The demo is angry like the song's sentiment, but I like the sublime production that Lindsey did to the song. You feel the anger without the angry vocals - the chorus with Stevie singing "I should had" intertwined with Lindsey's "just as fast as I can" is masterful to my ears. And the way the wounded guitar strums around Stevie's "Go on, save yourself.
Leave the key here. You love someone else.. I shouldn't be here.." as the songs winds down is killer. You feel the resentment without the anger. F@ckin brilliant.

See "Everybody finds out" as another prime example for this. All this years later, he still felt the need to mix his "Big Love" grunts into a great song, basically ruining it with this and of course the dreaded 80s overproduction. Worst offender on an album that generally suffered from an outdated, overly fussy production ever since it came out.

I love how people who worship her act like she's never in the room when Lindsey works on her songs, as if she hands him a demo and walks out of the room and has no control over the final product. Give me a freakin break. The man couldn't even suggest changing tense on a verse. I'm POSITIVE if she didn't like the grunts on Everybody Finds Out, she would of said so.

And if we REALLY want to get into outdated production....should we delve into Ms. Nicks' catalog for a minute? Rock A Little, Wildfart, OSOTM...they've all aged exceptionally well

I don't mean to stir anything up (I'm new around here :woohoo:) but... I'd love to hear how the song could have been epic. The reason it's snoozy is because, well, it's a snoozy song from someone who really wasn't contributing anything artistic to this album (yes I know the meaning of the song, and I'm glad she got help). I mean, sure, it could have had a faster pace? Is that what you mean? I'm not sure that would've saved it. So you have a different opinion, okay.
I'm indifferent towards Tom Petty and I basically dislike the production of all Stevie albums after Bella Donna. I liked Lindseys production work until TITN, where his production for FM stalled. What was inspiring on Tusk, turned fussy on TiTN and got annoying on SYW. Noone will know where Stevie would be without Lindsey, we also don't know where he would be without Stevie. I tend to think that both would have had some success, as talented, goodlooking and driven they both were.

I agree.

Though Lindsey receives co-writing credit for his guitar work, the song that garnered the FM invite is Stevie's (plus she was the only writing when BN started, so they wouldn't have even had a record deal without her). Without them both, neither gets into Fleetwood Mac.

They were each good enough to make it, but needed each other to make it as big as they did, and with as much staying power.

I agree with you.

Stevie's production is terrible on her albums. It's one of the main reasons I simply cannot listen to them. They're so BORING. Like the demo of Juliet on the re-released Tango is SO much better than the finished track on OSOTM. Just so dull and unlistenable! What bad choices.

And while I consider myself #TeamLindsey and genuinely LOVE the production on Tango, I do agree with you on Say You Will. I wanted to love that album (I still want to love it) but I just don't. The production makes it a real snooze fest trying to get through it. I used to chalk it up to Christine being a huge missing piece that they couldn't really overcome in terms of chemistry... but I think if I'm truthful, it's too long, and the production just doesn't hold my attention. (There are a few tracks I love and I basically whittle it down to an EP when I listen to it). This is basically my first confession of being so critical of this album...sorry!

Lastly, I agree with Stevie and LB both needing each other to achieve their successes. They both brought important aspects to the table in the '70s to launch the band to the big time, and we all know how their personal drama fueled the flames of success in the public eye. Without each other, who knows... maybe both would have been big separately? Maybe they would have hit it big as a duo and gotten married etc? Maybe neither, who knows... fun to speculate, impossible to know.

Stevie's production is terrible on her albums. I don't think it's all terrible, just uninventive. It doesn't express any excitement about the potentialities of the recording studio. In Lindsey's astute metaphor, it's not dabs of color and texture on a canvas.

Consider something in Lindsey's catalogue that you'd never find on a Stevie Nicks solo album produced by Iovine or Hine or Shanks: Love from Here, Love from There on Law and Order. A lot of us think it's a throwaway—and maybe it is—but it's a quirky, inventive, creative throwaway. It's "purpose" as a track is not to highlight a lyric or a structure but to replicate in modern terms the brass and wind mix in traditional three-part jazz. Lindsey is super-creative here, thinking outside the box. He uses different guitars (one of them a Gretsch), effects (including a fuzz box) and settings (gain, overdrive, and all) to mimic the sounds of a trumpet (cornet), clarinet, and trombone. Not only does he duplicate the formal sound properties of each of those three instruments but he also writes an almost contrapuntal interplay of their melodic lines that simulates the arrangements of early jazz records, which obviously influenced him. Some of you guys probably consider the end result a wash and not worth all the "inventiveness." But I and I hope others think it's an exuberant use of the medium that dispenses with formulaic tropes in pop song recording. And maybe, as such, in its own little way, it pushes the art into a new direction.

This sort of playfulness and creativity with orchestration is just not part of Stevie's presentation. She's a more straightforward, less ironic musician who wants one thing from her instrumentation: vocal support. If you stripped all the vocals from the tracks on her albums and on Lindsey's albums (or some Fleetwood Mac albums), you would have a pretty bland collection of instrumentals in the former case and a fascinating parade of sounds in the latter case. Lindsey likes to build instrumentals first, and then lay the song and lyric over like layers of paint. He wants the underlying track to have a personality of its own. Kate Bush does the same thing. (In my opinion, they've both been intermittently successful.)

Then again, Stevie isn't really creating her instrumentals—the hired guys are, under the direction of the producer. Stevie's giving a thumbs up or a thumbs down, but she's not doing the painting. Imagine Stevie attempting to work with a synth or a workstation to use its full capabilities (not just plonking on the keys, which is what she is shown doing in some photos of her at a synth). It's hard to imagine because it would just never happen. The ONLY reason to strip the vocals off a Stevie Nicks solo track is to use the instrumental for karaoke (like Night of a Thousand Stevies). The instrumental would contain no intrinsic merit.

Thank you David! I'm not going to stop telling the truth about goat breath. Thank you! Perfect post.

Lindsey was never my favorite member. Not until the past few years. He's the ONLY artist left in FM. He's the reason they've had the career they've had. Not some goat twirling around like an idiot. They should be kissing his ass, instead of throwing him under the bus.

She claims she was the last to discover she was inducted while on stage with Fleetwood Mac. Mick tried to tell her on stage but her ear piece went out and she could not hear him. Yeah ok.
She also claims Def Leppard comes to all the Fleetwood Mac concerts. Anyone ever hear of this?

Yes. She and the band didn't handle it well when she did, but this is what happened. Perhaps she did the math at several points along the way, and pulled the trigger when his financial value to her had diminished enough to justify the decision.

As I've said elsewhere, my issue is with the band for carrying on without Lindsey. Had they fired him and changed their name to "The Mac Attack" I would have no issue whatsoever.

I have no issue whatsoever with it, since Mick, John, and Christine were all part of the band’s history from the very beginning (remember, Chicken Shack and John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers also played the Windsor Jazz & Blues Festival on August 13, 1967, when Fleetwood Mac made its debut). Yeah, clearly they played it pretty loose as to who owns what given the revelation of oral understandings and whatnot.

I'm not sure I can explain this right, but I think I am kinda with you on the whole 1996-97 "Dance era" change with this band. In my opinion, that whole second life of this band (and of these individuals who ALL were rescued from the bin of obscurity with The Dance)....they began to completely ignore anything from before 1975 (the 1997 setlist was the first one in nearly 30 years without Oh Well being played, and it would stay gone except for the 2009 and current tours)...not just setlists, but even the whole Behind the Music stuff...they basically ignored what came before 1975, and what came after Lindsey left in 1987 and just focused on the Rumours-era 5. Once this was done, I just don't see any way that anyone else beyond these 5 could be in Fleetwood Mac. Christine made the decision to leave. She was not replaced. The Sheryl Crow idea was rightfully ignored.

I find the premise of this "new band" to be a complete joke after what they've put out as what defines Fleetwood Mac for the last 20 years. They're 70. This isn't a new band. It's not a fresh start. It's a bunch of petty BS and makes all their nonsense comments and actions as to what defines who is Fleetwood Mac from The Dance on through MusicCares seem ridiculous.

The fact remains, that particular fivesome has something special when they're together. They knew it in 1997 - all of their careers were rescued and resuscitated. If one of the 5 were missing or refused to partake, they wouldn't be making millions selling out arenas for the last 20 years. Stevie wouldn't be going into the RRHOF. It took all of them together - the appeal of the band is those people.

My sentiments exactly, and very well put.

I will add these two cents: Post-reset (1997) Fleetwood Mac does work without Christine. It does not work, however, without Stevie or without Lindsey. It's not a matter of just having two of the three lead vocalists. It has to be Stevie and Lindsey, or Stevie Lindsey and Christine.

Otherwise–given the reset, how long the reset lasted, and the indispensability of Stevie and Lindsey both–they can call themselves what they will, but it ain't Fleetwood Mac.

To me, the most disgusting part (and thanks to that interviewer for not cutting it!) is when she basically admit her abortions as her own decision of not wanting to have children, and patting herself on the back for that because she never wanted to have a son.:shocked::shocked::shocked:

And then I turned towards Christine [McVie] and she was like, “Congratulations sweetheart” or something and I’m just standing there and thinking that this was not anything that would have been mentioned onstage before. [She seems to mean before Lindsey Buckingham left the group, but she was unwilling to field questions about that situation.]

Stevie is implying the current band said this to her because the former band with Lindsey would have never mentioned anything. That is her insinuating that Lindsey controlled the band and would never let the other members congratulate her. Rubbish! She is bringing Lindsey into her Rock N Roll hall of fame announcement. Does anyone really think Mick or Christine would not have said congratulations to Stevie because Lindsey was there? So because Lindsey is gone, the rest of the band is free to speak and worship her because Lindsey was preventing it?

I agree completely that it's her reasons.

I think one reason bringing it up is valid - is that she certainly seems jealous of Lindsey's happy, grown up,
family life. She had her chances(perhaps) of having that, but instead she chose a narcissistic, diva like lifestyle, wrapped up in herself.

I'm positive $he'd rather have TWO r&rhof inductions than a happy family, anyway. It's all about $tevie.

Just my opinion on Stevie and kids - she regrets not having them. I think she sees what Lindsey (and others too, while she obsesses with LB, I don't think it's the only example of this that she knows) has now and she regrets that she doesn't have a family. I'm not saying she SHOULD regret it - nor that she SHOULD have had kids - nor that she shouldn't have had an abortion (or several), that's her right and her body. But, she manages to bring this up with relative frequency over the last couple of decades. And she oversells it (my songs are my children...I couldn't drag my kids on the road, I have lots of girls around me that are like my kids anyway, etc) in my opinion - it's her way of convincing herself at the age of 70 that her younger self made the right decision.

Except it didn’t work, at least not well.

It took them five years to put out an album after “The Dance.” SYW worked so well that it took them a decade to put out a four song EP.

If it had been working well, Sheryl Crow would have never been in the discussions.

Perhaps the biggest indicator that it didn’t work without Christine is the fact that, barring the unforeseen, they will have done 44 more shows in less than five years since Christine’s first show back than they did in the decade between the end of the SYW tour and her return.

Christine has always added more than (her wonderful) music and talents, she leveled with both the divas and build a bridge between the UK and US folks. The band suffered from the absence of her personality, calmness and serenity and from her not lighten up the mood/putting someone in their place with her dry humour.

He’s the one who had them participate on his solo album because he tanked as a solo artist in 1992-93. If OotC had been a massive success, do you think he would have wanted a reunion?

His viability as a solo artist, the album he never released anyway, or the kindness of his heart had nothing to do with it.
It eventually was released…mainly in the form of SYW. That’s the point. He recorded those songs with the durability as to how they could be released. They could be Fleetwood Mac (Steal Your Heart Away) or solo (Down On Rodeo). If he had been commercially viable, would he have felt the need for that durability?

yes, because LB had the album ready but SN ran away to try to rebuild her dead solo career capitalizing on Mac resurgence while while short-changing Fleetwood Mac.

LB should have just put his new music out in 1998.

that said, if Chris didn't leave, maybe her and LB and the rest of them would have had the leverage to get the new music album out immediately. but Chris and Linds are artists, and not good at the business side of it, as many has brought up in these threads over the past week already. they are good at musicianship, SN is good at buidling a commercial persona. together it all worked spectacularly in the 70s and started falling apart in the 80s.

After the amount of success (read: money) that was made by Eagles with the Hell Freezes Over reunion, yes, even if OOTC was successful, there would’ve been appetite by all of them to reunite in the 90’s. None of them solo have ever been more successful than they are as a fivesome. The money put on the table for a Fleetwood Mac reunion would’ve been even better if any of them had any semblance of a successful solo career by 1995/96.

Given the songs she has written about lost children, I don’t believe she has no regrets.

She acts like the son she raised would have been a complete stranger to her. They don’t come out of the wound as rebellious teen males. They are people that you get to know and help shape, like Robin’s baby would have been.

In answer to the original question this thread was about,
Yes, I do still really like Stevie Nicks. Stephanie Lynn Nicks remains my favourite female singer of all time...well ok, second favourite. Second only to Aretha Franklin.
And no prizes for guessing my favourite male singer. Same name as some palace in England.
I really believe that had there not been irreconcilable differences, Stevie would have wanted Lindsey to stay. Imagine the alternative to what actually happened. Stevie reluctantly agrees to Lindsey staying in the band and they go on a massive farewell tour covering all the major countries in the world. But they both hate each other and do not even talk except on stage. That would kill their musical chemistry and the tour would be absolutely ****.

That's what had been happening since 1977, or at least since 2003 or 2004. They even stayed at separate hotels.

I fear that right now we would discuss their fake "onstage we love each other" shtick, not having to see that is the one good thing that comes with Lindsey being out.

haha yeah - with some people insisting that it's real. meanwhile now other groups of people are oh so sure that "happy happy happy" because LB is not there with them is real for this current version. people always like to buy in some schtick or back story.

and yeah, anyone who knows anything about this band knew this for years, that would have been nothing new:

just to wrap this up since i don't want that fb group to get unneccesary rep - those posts were deleted in the group on facebook. the thread was specifically about The Ledge because some people have been apparently trying to join for a while and couldn't because of the spam problems. they were asking whether there's a way to join.

That got me looking you other English town names and I found that there's a town called Fleetwood!

It was major up until the 1970s, after which it declined and "has slowly become poor."

I still love Stevie’s music. I just resent that she would kick Lindsey out when they’re nearing the end of the road and Christine came back so they could go out with the classic lineup back together, but no, Stevie is a selfish B**** and she said F*** you loyal fans, you’re not getting a proper farewell tour.

Completely irrelevant piece of information but Fleetwood is a seaside town not far from the more famous Blackpool. It’s also an absolute sh!t hole of a place.

I do still love her. I think she is getting treated a bit unfairly here. Not like LB has been overly kind to her in many situations. I think he has been a bit jealous over her solo success. And let's face it. We don't know what really happened behind the scenes between these two. I am actually surprised they lasted this long in the band together. I never thought it would go as long as it has.

Yes. It is surprising when you think back on all of it.

It's interesting you think she's being treated unfairly though... everywhere online on social media or article comments, I see endless: "He is always making her the villain! He's the worst!" and "I hate how much hate she gets because of Lindsey!" and "Good riddance! He has always been riding her coattails! He can's stand how successful she is!" or "He's always trying to bring her down! Get over it! She IS Fleetwood Mac!" and all of these comments that vilify Lindsey. And if anyone says anything in favor of LB, that person is attacked by Stevie's fan base. Outside of this forum, I rarely see anyone talking smack the other way. I actually feel it's quite the opposite of Stevie being treated unfairly.

They're both driven, successful, competitive people who have a long history with/against each other. They are both talented and critical to the success of FM in different ways... and they've both been petty, as most humans are. The band needed both of them for the level of success they achieved.

(random thoughts here, not directed at anyone in particular)
My thing is that now that Stevie is reining queen, why are Stevie fans still so upset about Lindsey? She's still in the band, she just got elected to the RRHOF, she got her way and LB is gone. She's ruling over FM Land. So why are Stevie fans still spewing so much venom? Lindsey is the one left out of the band he helped make so successful (no, we don't know what happened, but no one can argue how critical he was to those four albums they made together as the Rumors 5). Stevie was the one holding everything up for Tango for *her* solo career... so how is LB the one to blame this time when its reversed (which is a phony excuse anyway)? He wanted to record a new FM album but she refused.

I personally find the vitriol spewed on both about both of them exhausting... I hate how things are, but we can't change anything and it doesn't help to be nasty either way.

Anyway it's Christmas Eve and I have nothing new to say. Just rambling thoughts. Merry Christmas to those who celebrate. Maybe Santa will reunite them for 2019. Ha...

Not like LB has been overly kind to her in many situations. I think he has been a bit jealous over her solo success.I think he's been very jealous of her success, but it's a strange sort of jealousy, especially for him to feel. He was jealous of her commercial success—the size of her audience. That's all. He was never jealous of her solo work as music. He never thought much of it—that's quite clear. He never thought it on par with his own musical heroes, from Scotty Moore to Lennon-McCartney to Brian Wilson all the way up to Tom Morello and beyond.

In a way, I think that's what has made his jealousy all the pricklier: He has never felt that her work merited the commercial reward it's garnered. His frustration with Nicks the musician is his frustration with all insubstantial pop acts that sell millions. He's never come fully to peace with the vulgarity of the mass market in pop, and you can find that disgust all through his own music.

How is Stevie an insubstantial pop act, any more than he at least tried to be in the 80's?

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate. Maybe Santa will reunite them for 2019. Ha...

Santa receives a letter/complaint from Lindsey.
"Ho ho ho. This young man's Christmas wish is to rejoin his former band and salvage its legacy? Let's see if old Santa can't fix this!"

Sleigh pulls up at Stevie's gothic mansion.
"Ho ho ho. What strange music is this I hear?"

Stevie stands at the window, draped in lace curtains, belting out her interminable rendition of "Silent Night."
"....WELL IT WAS A...."

The reindeer bray in fright.
Santa leaps back into his sleigh and cracks the whip.

"That was his Christmas wish?!
On Dasher, on Dancer, on anyone! Get me out of here!"

If the rules aren't the same for everyone then at least be up front about it. Is HomerMcVie providing some sort of financial or other type of assistance to the site? Is that why the rules don't apply to him? How about the poster that called me a twat? Why is he still able to post? That guy followed me on to social media and I had to block him. Why does HomerMcVie think he can tell me that my next ban will be permanent? I've been posting here for 20 years almost. What could I have done that is so horrible that I deserve to be permanently banned?

He may had proposed it, but I've not made any deals with Homer and I am not the only person moderating (much like you think) Michele is reading all of it, even if she doesn't chime in.

Like today, you keep the fire burning and instigate quite often. If you want to blame me, that's your right. Just please stay on topic and maybe not make your first post back aimed at inciting Homer.
