Twin Cities keyboardist 'having a ball' touring with Fleetwood Mac
Ricky Peterson joins Fleetwood Mac in St. Paul on Monday.
By Jon Bream Star Tribune OCTOBER 18, 2018 — 5:55PM

He hasn’t ridden on the private jet yet. But Twin Cities keyboardist Ricky Peterson is on quite a ride playing with Fleetwood Mac.

His first gig with the band was for “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in September. Then came the iHeart Radio Festival. Now there’s the 50-city tour, arriving Monday in St. Paul.

“This is wonderful, man,” he said recently from his room at Chicago’s posh Ritz-Carlton hotel overlooking Lake Michigan. “The band has never sounded better. I’m having a ball.”

Peterson is just three weeks into the six-month tour where he plays behind Stevie Nicks, complements keyboardist Christine McVie and marvels at Mike Campbell’s guitar playing.

First, an explanation of how Peterson got the gig. He’s played keys for Nicks’ solo tours since 2007. He also happened to know drummer Mick Fleetwood from vacations in Hawaii, where the veteran British rocker lives and operates a blues bar. Peterson got the call when Fleetwood Mac’s longtime sideman keyboardist left the band and started touring with guitarist Lindsey Buckingham.

“I didn’t have to audition for this gig,” said Peterson proudly. “They invited me to come and hang. I love it. I sort of grew up on this music.”

Fleetwood Mac

When: 8 p.m. Mon.

Where: Xcel Energy Center, St. Paul.

Tickets: $69.50 and up; ticketmaster.com.

He’d jammed before with Fleetwood at the drummer’s blues club in Maui. Plus, he had Nicks’ endorsement.

Peterson was essential enough that when Fleetwood and ex-Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers member Campbell auditioned singers in Hawaii, Peterson was involved. He won’t name names as to who tried out, but Neil Finn of Crowded House got the gig. That makes Finn and Campbell official members of Fleetwood Mac, while Peterson is a handsomely paid hired hand.

Two months of rehearsals

The keyboardist’s next assignment was to learn 38 songs before convening for rehearsal in Los Angeles on Aug. 1. The group practiced five days a week for about four or five hours daily until Sept. 28.

“I didn’t think it would take that long to get it all down, but it actually does, because there’s so much involved,” Peterson observed. “It’s a lot of music, and [learning] the beginnings and endings of songs.”

Who’s in charge? Buckingham used to be. He sued Fleetwood Mac two weeks ago over his dismissal. The band disputes his claims.

“Stevie is running the show,” Peterson said. “But they discuss it. No one is yelling at each other. It’s very, very diplomatic. And the principals are involved. Ultimately, I think Stevie and Mick are the final decisionmakers.”

Personnel drama from the start

There was a Fleetwood Mac long before Buckingham and Nicks came on the scene. The blues-rock band was founded in England in 1967. Personnel changes were a hallmark of the band until the lineup stabilized, and the music soared with the addition in 1975 of Buckingham and Nicks, who were a couple then.

The album “Fleetwood Mac” became a blockbuster, followed in ’77 by the even bigger “Rumours.” One of the bestselling albums of all time, it discussed the various romantic soap operas in the band. Hit albums, including 1979’s “Tusk” and 1982’s “Mirage,” and sold-out tours kept coming. So did bumps in the road.

Nicks and Buckingham launched solo careers and took brief leaves from the band at different times in the ’80s and ’90s. McVie, the third singer, retired in 1998 but returned to the fold four years ago.

With Fleetwood Mac planning to play only three shows a week on this tour, Buckingham wanted to be able to squeeze in solo concerts between Mac dates. The band not only said “no” but decided to proceed without him. The soap opera continues.

Peterson has no access to those feuds and lawyerly negotiations.

“I didn’t hear any heavy feedback from the principals, but nobody’s really talking about it,” he said. “Everybody’s happy and it sounds like it. Everybody’s having a good time onstage.”

Oldies plus a Petty hit

Peterson was there when the band whittled the set list down to 26 tunes for the tour. “That’s why it took two months,” he said.

There is a Tom Petty classic as well as hits Finn sang with Crowded House and Split Enz plus Fleetwood Mac oldies, including “Oh Well,” that predate Buckingham and Nicks.

Peterson gets solos during “Black Magic Woman,” one of the band’s oldies, and “Rhiannon,” one of Nicks’ biggest songs with Fleetwood Mac. And he does background vocals.

Keyboard parts are carefully worked out so Peterson doesn’t overshadow McVie.

“She’s the main keyboard player,” he said. “This is a sideman job. She’s very accommodating. She’s such a sweetheart. This is not a play-a-lot-of-notes gig. This is more of a listening-and-feel gig to figure out where everybody is going with the music. My job is to make them sound as good as they can.”

Peterson has no complaints about traveling by bus while the principals of Fleetwood Mac — and their assistants, spouses/significant others and dogs — journey by jet. Actually two jets. The keyboardist does get to roll in one of the many limousines used to transport the band to and from the hotel and arena.

Peterson, 60, knows the bus routine from his days playing with Bonnie Raitt, John Mayer and Nicks. He’s also toured for three decades with jazz saxophonist David Sanborn as well as recording with a host of stars, including Prince, George Benson, Mavis Staples, Steve Miller, Ben Sidran, Al Jarreau and Les McCann. Peterson has released four solo albums in the United States, with a new one issued in Germany this year.

But playing with Fleetwood Mac is “just a fun hang. There is no animosity. No attitudes. Everybody has their happy-camper vibe on. It’s just a great rock band.”

To avoid taxing Nicks’ voice, Fleetwood Mac never plays two nights in a row. Thus, Peterson gets plenty of free time. He’ll visit tourist sights and hit the gym. Then he mentioned the steak dinners he’s had with other sidemen in the band.

Peterson may not be a rock star, but he’s living in a rock star world, private jet notwithstanding.

Yes, she is running the show. So what!

Somebody has to do it :-)

Ouch!
So its not Christine playing the solo during Black Magic Woman. Although she does a good job pretending its her. I miss her playing :(

Of course Stevie is in charge. Her rules when to tour. Her rules who's in the band. Her rules what songs to play. Her rules on the Petty tribute.

Well, let's look at this logically: John doesn't give a crap about what they play, he probably has even less interest than the new guys in what they play. Christine also seems, hmmm, how to say this, perhaps little emotionally invested in the set list as well. This is obvious to me by several comments she's made in the past. Clearly, Neil and Mike put in their requests, and so did Mick, but yeah, I have no doubt that Stevie was the one behind most of this set list or in charge- someone has to be, and it was never going to be John, Christine, Neil, or Mike. My only surprise about this is that anyone is surprised about this LOL!

Wonderful. The band has chosen the least musically qualified person to rule the band. No wonder she hated Lindsey enough to kick him out--of course he would not have allowed her to get her way. What other band in its right mind would allow a person whose musical knowledge extends to plonk plonk plonk on a piano to become its musical director? With Mike fortuitously becoming available she saw her chance and took it.

This is not a band I want to see or whose music I want to listen to. Thank goodness for Lindsey's Solo Anthology.

It proves everything. She can dictate how many nights a week they play but when Lindsey wants to delay the tour two months he gets fired. See? She fired him to get her buddy mike in the band. He can’t sing so they needed Neil. She’s a total freaking jerk and the whole thing makes me sick. She makes me sick.

Ricky Peterson answers the door to his hotel room on the day after this article drops. Karen is standing there, flanked by two hired goons from.
"Oh, hi Karen."
"Hi Ricky. We need to talk."
The smile fades from Ricky's face.

I agree that it makes perfect sense that Stevie took charge here. When Mick is in charge, he has enough leadership ability to scout someone to be the next leader. Lindsey has long been the leader and I’m also not surprised that Stevie is the new leader.

I'm going to say something that is not going to be very popular around here. I will get lots of hate for sure, I expect that as this board has become all about hate.
I still love Fleetwood Mac. I still love Stevie, there I said it. I love the band and the years of music. I thought this was a place to go to share our love for the music and how it impacts our lives.
Every page I go to is the same over and over and over, how we hate the band and Stevie, week after week month after month. I get it, Stevie did the unpardonable sin, you think she should die and be sent to hell to rot etc.
But enough is enough already. Seems lots of people have left and no longer post. This has become the hate board. I thought this was supposed to be a place for FANS of the band to hang out. If you no longer like Fleetwood Mac or certain members, or can no longer listen to or buy their music maybe your not a fan anymore, you should start your own web page for haters of everything Fleetwood Mac and Stevie and move along, and not destroy this board for the rest of the people who would like to be here.
Can we move on, please?

There is plenty of love on The Ledge and more Ledgie's feeling the love than the hate. It's just that the hate is more vicious since Lindsey was canned. You gotta look past that negativity and simply enjoy yourself and contribute more positive posts. Haterz gonna hate and will continue to do so because they know it annoys and it makes them feel good to release the pent up frustrations they unfortunately feel on an everyday basis. This is no different than equating dislike for Donald Trump with dislike for America, and telling people to "move on" to another country if they don't like him. The reason why people are upset is BECAUSE they like Fleetwood Mac, and BECAUSE they are fans. The band means a lot to people. Telling people to "move on" after what happened is laughable. Just because you don't care or understand, and are fine with just whoever being thrown on a stage and being called "Fleetwood Mac" doesn't mean that it's so easy for EVERYONE to "get over it." Why is this so difficult to grasp?

Fan is short for "fanatic."

Same here.

And there's a bit of a spit in Lindsey's eye to this whole article- "Stevie's in charge and now everyone feels they can contribute and there's no arguing".

I don't for a minute think there wasn't a lot of actual fighting and shouting and nasty arguing in the band, especially between Stevie and Lindsey.
What I find curious though is what some people, especially Stevie diehards, consider "fighting".

Like the whole DR doc scene, where Stevie and Karen double team Lindsey to pressure him into signing a contract that would commit him to having Chris Lord-Alge mix his songs when, as Lindsey rightly reminds them, that was NOT where they were at in the process. All they were asking Chris to do was mix ONE of Lindsey's songs so they could all evaluate whether they liked his direction and THEN if they did they'd do contracts and all that. That was a genuine heated discussion and difference of opinion about what was the next step. Lindsey did NOT yell, he stuck to his position, and then he called his manager and yes, totally made a snarky passive-aggressive remark about them blaming him for the contract issue. It was STEVIE who then raised her voice and started making loud comments about everything while he was on the phone, and then pestered him as he left the room which he did in order to not have the conversation in front of cameras and their voices got louder because they were talking and walking away from each other. Frankly his irritation honestly seemed pointed a lot towards Karen because it was a classic Stevie move to bring someone else along with her to be "bad cop" and do her dirty work for her. The two of them were trying to manipulate him to use the guy Stevie wanted and he wasn't going to be pushed as it wasn't what they agreed.

Yet they will INSIST that it was Lindsey 'being all mean' to her.

Or god forbid, as her producer on SYW, him pointing out the lyrics to her (which he has done throughout their entire careers) and her refusing to accept that he was giving her constructive advice. She was spring loaded to reject anything he said, in part because in the past he has indeed been really sh^tty about how he critiqued her work, and for that I don't blame her. But since her solo work she's had this increasing sense that everything she writes is divine and cannot be changed.

I work in a creative field and people get passionate about their ideas and discussions about projects get passionate. That's how creativity works, and as long as it doesn't get personal you have to deal with it. The problem in FM is that forever the work discussions devolved into personal attacks, which they are BOTH guilty of doing. It get not wanting to deal with THAT aspect of it. But she seems to want totally the kind of smooth sailing which only comes when you are NOT generating new ideas and working them out but instead are just going out doing a pre packaged show of oldies. I think he swallowed that for the live shows thinking he could get the payback in doing new stuff in the studio, but she refused. For that reason I actually think him parting company is a good thing for him. But again rather than having a rational, adult, business discussion about it, she just dug in and then got sneaky. And that's unforgivable, to me. ymmv.

Mick is by far the worst offender in the band given how he's handled himself over the years, especially in the name of "business".

It's just Stevie's actions now that are in the limelight because we know now through direct and indirect sources that this was her doing and, probably by the sounds of it, unjustified. Doing terrible things in the past doesn't justify being vilified years later, especially if you've made amends or tried to. Do I honestly think Lindsey is still the drugged out abusive person he used to be? No, just like I don't think Mick Fleetwood is a coked, sketchy individual who'll screw over anybody for a quick buck anymore.

But to ignore a person's bad behavior because the other person 'did some bad stuff' is senseless and irresponsible and partly the reason they are behaving like this in the first place, because no one calls them out on it. And that goes for anybody in the band, not just Stevie or Mick.

30 million albums  to be generous I'd give her half that amount for North America but she has never had Fleetwood Mac's international appeal .Except for Australia and New Zealand(not exactly the most populous areas) she has not had sustained mainstream popularity anywhere else as solo artist . So my positive would be that Lindsey will likely be happier and more fulfilled in his solo career now.

Majority rules! Hah! Stevie rules. This article is just more proof of that and makes it even more credible that it was she alone getting Lindsey fired.

Well, he already said "it was all Stevie", and she didn't deny it. Case closed.

Ricky Peterson answers the door to his hotel room on the day after this article drops. Karen is standing there, flanked by two hired goons from.
"Oh, hi Karen."
"Hi Ricky. We need to talk."
The smile fades from Ricky's face.

watch him mysteriously get an "illness"
and need to be replaced for the rest of the tour dates ...

Why wouldn't Stevie be happy with this article? She IS he most capable person to run the show so what is wrong with stating the obvious? I think that she should get credit where credit is due. Imho the insistance of Mick and Lindsey that FM is a "real" band who happens to have 2 female players in it got really old over the years. Mick is the worst offender in downplaying Stevies and Christines archivements and I'm glad that that seems to be over now (In 1990, Mick told an interviewer that during the sessions for BTM he learned that Christine was more than a pretty face. He had the nerve to actually say that).

Stop it. The so-called direct sources, if they exist, have not been cited by name. And the only truly direct account we have is from Lindsey's lawsuit, which was crafted to make a legal argument on his behalf and does not include the band's account of the situation. Until we hear directly from the other side, you don't know s***; everything else is speculation-taken-as-fact. Just saying so doesn't make it so.

So you are saying that people's appalling past behavior should just be merely forgotten and swept under the rug? I believe in forgiveness if the perpetrator is truly contrite and has made amends for their indiscretions... But it's a one-time offer only. Ongoing abusive and s****y behavior can evolve and manifest itself in different ways, e.g., emotional vs. physical. And it can be a poison that slowly leaches into the ether and makes everyone in the vicinity chronically ill. Sometimes it takes one seemingly minor incident to trigger an epiphany that the remedy to the chronic illness is to just remove the toxin. This stuff happens every day in marriages, friendships, jobs, etc. One day you just realize that it's time to head in a different direction because the old direction isn't working anymore. IF (and I mean IF) that is what happened to Fleetwood Mac, then we should just accept it and either move on with them or get off at the next stop. The lingering resentment, namecalling, obsession and misogyny are just pathetic. It's not a good look on anybody.

Here here. If people no longer like Fleetwood Mac, what is the point of hanging around on The Ledge? If it's because of Lindsey, they should base themselves within the perimeters of his threads and act like the rest of the threads don't exist.

So good to have you back Ed. Hope you stay this time. What made you decide to come back?

What "appalling past behavior" are you talking about? Stevie has never made an abuse allegation against Lindsey, and actually defended Lindsey against Mick's account of the famous fight in his book.

You call out any accusations against Stevie as speculation and lacking direct evidence, and then you proceed to do exactly that, speculate about how Stevie is totally fed up with Lindsey and his abusive behavior. There's no issue with defaming Lindsey around here, but no criticism of the queen is allowed. And the sexism card is getting really old.

There's a big difference between speculating that Stevie had a role in ousting Lindsey from the band, when it's pretty clear she had the most to do with it, and painting Lindsey as an unmitigated abuser of women. To quote you, you don't know s*** about the emotional tenor of Stevie and Lindsey's relationship, and how it's evolved over the years.
Amen!

I'm sick to death that Lindsey is fair game, but any criticism of the Old Goat is misogyny. So I guess only men are allowed to be disliked? Surely a woman couldn't do anything that would inspire hate.

"Me too" has brought a new level of straight man hatred, especially among a select few here, who cry misogyny every minute of the day. Give me a break.

Stevie isn't capable or running her life, much less a rock band.

And please, don't reduce this to a women vs. men thing. None of them have the musical knowledge and the ability or even the physical status to run a rock band.

Interesting that many still don't understand or don't want to understand the spark for many people's ire at Stevie.

No one disputes Lindsey was a sh*tty b*stard to her for a very, very long time. His issues over their breakup clouded his behavior towards her.

No one disputes that she put up with this for a long time..... because the band was successful and making lots of money and giving them lots of fame beyond what they could get solo, even Stevie, and because in her competitiveness she decided she would not be the one to blame for breaking up the band. So she gutted it out. This was HER choice. She could have walked away from FM anytime after her huge solo success.

Many refuse to accept that she was locked in a co-dependent relationship with Lindsey for years which means she participated in the love-hate thing and could be just as manipulative and yelling and fighting with him as he could with her. She just puts a better PR face on things to convince you how reasonable she is and he didn't play the PR game as well and didn't hide how 'prickly' he was (his wife's word).

He did indeed try to understand her point of view and accommodate her style more-- she talked a lot about them at one point in the late 90s or so sitting down and really hashing things out and her telling him things she'd never said before and him saying "I wish I'd know that" etc. and they seemed to reach a level of detente.

Despite the goggles her die-hard fans continue to wear when watching the DR documentary, he was not confrontational to her in any of the scenes we saw. Him telling her she's using poor grammar (she was) was NOT 'confrontational'. The discussion about the contract to mix songs was not confrontational on his part either; but it WAS on her part. Yet many choose not to see it. She brought in another person and double-teamed him to pressure him to sign a contract he correctly would not sign. She sicced her assistant on him, and then whined while he was on the phone and then followed him out of the room. Yet he was being mean to her.

Her manipulation of the band continued with the excuses not to record. And for a while to not tour, so much so that Mick went to the press and did whiny interviews about how FM was finished because of her.

Lindsey may or may not have pitched a battle about the choice of intro music at Musicares (isn't it funny that so many on here whine about 'name the sources!' when a story comes out that makes Stevie look bad, but when there's an unnamed source that says Lindsey threw a fit at Musicares, well by golly it must be true!) and he mimed dancing while Stevie spoke (well after Chris and Mick checked their watches, laughed, then waltzed together).

Rather than Stevie saying look, this is the final tour, and telling her manager to tell his manager that she had a list of conditions for the tour that she wanted from him or something that attempted to slog out one final tour she lays down an ultimatum to the band that he's out or she's out.

Given the speed at which the band immediately replaced Lindsey with one of Stevie's favorite guitarists and co-writers, Mick did not bother to act as band leader and try to keep the band together for their final tour but capitulated right away, and then was complicit in convincing John to support the decision and then saying it only takes a majority vote not a unanimous vote to kick someone out. The band agreed to kick out a member and bring in a specific new member within DAYS of that event.

The band proceeded to lie to their fans and the public about what happened, why it happened, and when it happened. They also perpetuated a lie when they promoted the tour with photos of the Rumours5 line up. Their bottom line has been so unabashedly about doing the tour and making the final money. There's been little to no attempt whatsoever to even pretend they have an artistic or legacy motivation for this tour. They know they are lying and they are unwilling to face up to it because NO ONE is doing any interviews to promote this tour at all. (They've surely been advised by lawyers anything they say can be brought up in the lawsuit).

They've resorted to tricks like having side players speak in interviews to say how great things are on tour.

While there's a lot of Stevie bashing, there's also been a lot of Mick bashing, and a lot of head-scratching about the role of the McVies. Many a Chris fan has found themselves disappointed and disillusioned about her response. And no one has denied Lindsey can be a royal pain in the arse and demanding and pouty. But there's a contingent that insists that Stevie has never been and is never any of these things. He has consistently made attempts to make amends and move forward. She has resisted.

She broke up the band with a sneaky move, and with Mick's enabling. Not Lindsey. There is clearly a lot more that may come out due to the lawsuit, and the band's very pointed response indicated they are ready for a fight. The fact that people find this interesting and are speculating on when and how that other shoe might drop and what might come out should not shock people. Yet somehow it does. If people want to ignore the fuss and put their heads down and accept whatever the band dishes out, fine.

If people don't like reading nasty comments, skip over them. It's not hard. This cuts both ways. Personal attacks from one poster to another are just not acceptable. Argue the point someone is making but don't attack the person. There has been too much of that on here for sure. But bashing a band member is not the same thing.

I tend to think that if Lindsey had been fired for bad behavior, he would told everyone he left for his solo career. Mick said on national TV that fired was not a word they liked to use. Lindsey has said he was let go and didn't want to leave. So either he is very obtuse or there was no real reason for his being fired, which he was.

For him to go forward with a lawsuit says that he feels he was the one wronged and he has no ill will towards the rest of the group, even Stevie. Is it possible that he would have no idea that he did something to make the rest of the group can him?

This group of peoples actions and statements are the reason the fans are so divided into teams. They have perpetuated it. It has become a he said/they said and the fans have had to pick a side. In the end, it was probably a bit of both sides fault as these things usually are.

I just keep thinking of Lindsey's words in his email to Mick, with the finish line in sight, why would they break up at this point. Good Lord, Stevie could have not traveled with Lindsey, it could have been set up that the only time she had to see him was on stage. Hell, they don't even have to look at each other. Do the 60 city tour, get your millions and retire with a great legacy and some dignity.

Yes, I've seen the videos of the tour and it looks like it would be a fun night. Not what I really wanted, but enjoyable. But all this has just tarnished the legacy of Fleetwood Mac, when it should have been a time of celebrating 50 years.

If people don't like reading nasty comments, skip over them. It's not hard. This cuts both ways. Personal attacks from one poster to another are just not acceptable. Argue the point someone is making but don't attack the person. There has been too much of that on here for sure. But bashing a band member is not the same thing.

Very eloquently put. Yes, I agree with this 100%
What irritates me is some people think fans should just accept the situation, not comment and just move on. It's been the soundtrack to my life and I feel I have every right to express my displeasure (and continue to do so long as I feel the need to do so). I still have a real love for the remaining band, I just really don't like them at the moment. That so many people feel the same way speaks volumes.

In reading the Rolling Stone article and Lindey's court filing the takeaways I had were:
I don't think LB and his wife live together 100% of the time.
This is a concerted attack by someone who is very, very practiced at being an emotional terrorist.
Stevie is a god damned saint for putting up with this sh!t for 40 years.

exactly. it's an attempt at damage control. you know, he ruled with the iron fist, they ousted him, and now it's all happy happy happy democracy. except the guy slips somewhere in there and makes it clear it's actually not: everyone can chime in and say whatever but in the end it will be what SN and Mick say.

...and your point is? Even if it is true that SN and Mick have the ultimate say in all band-related decisions, don't you think they've earned it? Mick (with John) is the band's namesake. And other than Mick and John, Stevie has the longest tenure in the band. And as much as it pains you, Stevie is the one who puts the a$$es in seats. People are generally loving the setlist for the new tour, so you can't say that Mick and SN are somehow failing miserably at putting this show together.

If people want to ignore the fuss and put their heads down and accept whatever the band dishes out, fine.

again, missing the point that it's not that she did it as much as HOW she did it.

Not only that she gave the band an ultimatum but that she immediately had his replacement at hand. It suggests there was a degree of forethought, like maybe she had been just waiting for the right moment to make her move and finally get this guy out of her life. (ETA: she wants it both ways-- she wants him out, but she wants him to bail her out when she gets stuck on her songs, e.g., Soldier's Angel. So maybe she doesn't want him OUT of her life, she just wants to CONTROL him. "I need to be the boss")

The thing is, she could have gotten him out of her life at any point -- by leaving FM. And, if the rest of the band had been united that they wanted Lindsey out, they could have taken their vote at any time and then just kicked him out. (they claim now this is how it works- majority rules).

So the fact they hadn't done it suggests everyone else was ok with him, or able and willing to tolerate him, until one day Stevie wasn't. And then she leveraged her ability to put bums in seats (no one disputes she has the most ability for this) to force the rest of them to kick him out. Because that's what she did. She forced them. Me, or him. Now, could they have sided with him? Sure thing. And, just because they sided with her doesn't necessarily mean they agree with her FEELINGS about him.(Chris did a whole album and tour with him. In the documentary of making that Mick is all huggy and lovey with him, as is Chris). That's the point. She played on their greed and they fell in line as she knew they would. They sold him out for a buck.

Bands have members come and go. That's FM legacy. But the down and dirty, sneaky grubby way this has played out is shameful.

If people don't like reading nasty comments, skip over them. It's not hard. This cuts both ways. Personal attacks from one poster to another are just not acceptable. Argue the point someone is making but don't attack the person. There has been too much of that on here for sure. But bashing a band member is not the same thing.

I appreciate your excellent post, bombaysapphires. Very well said. I hope you don't mind if I respond to a few of your points. For me, it's not that I don't understand or don't want to understand the spark for why many people feel angry at FM right now. I get it, and I think most people do. It's not that we don't care... we just don't want to read about your anger on every thread. That might sound harsh, but it gets old. I really hope I haven't angered you by saying that, and I can see why you would get angry, but I'm just trying to explain my POV. My frustration is not that people hate Stevie and FM now, or are furious with them, or however you want to say it... my frustration is that a few people on this board are relentless about sharing their hatred for FM now by commenting on every thread in every forum on this board. I would happily stick to the Present Band board if it would mean not having to read on every thread how evil Stevie and Mick are for firing Lindsey, but the same posters even go there and make the same nasty comments they've made on every other board here. I also understand that you can relate to that, as Lindsey has been vilified here, too. So what's the solution?

Another point you mentioned, really in passing, but it caught my eye so I wanted to respond to it, was "they've resorted to tricks like having side players speak in interviews to say how great things are on tour." I think you're referring to the newspaper interview with Ricky Petersen. I think a lot of us are hypersensitive right now (please note I absolutely am including myself here), as that is the only way I can describe your remark. What I see as a sweet interview in a newspaper with a 'small town boy who made good,' you see as a plot by the band to use innocent people in order to do damage control. I have seen many interviews like this, where a city newspaper interviews someone local involved in some event, whether it be a concert, or a movie, or a play, etc. Sure, it's possible FM conspired to get that newspaper interview, but I really think it was just what it seemed to be- a simple interview with a local guy who is on a major tour making a stop in his hometown. I guess I mention this because I've been hypersensitive about certain things on this board, and read more into something than what was likely intended.

Lastly, you say that personal attacks from one poster to another are just not acceptable. I totally agree and I'm glad you feel the same way. But is it wrong to also say that personal attacks against the band members are just not acceptable? I'm not saying people shouldn't be vocal about their anger at any of the band members, past or present. But why do people have to be so nasty by calling them names? I understand completely that this board allows that... but do we have to stoop to that level, just because it's not against the rules? And I'm not directing that comment to just you, bombaysapphires- I'm directing it to everyone on this board, including myself. Can't people state their impassioned feelings without name calling? I think we can, but people choose not to. So what's the solution?

Anyway, like I said, thanks for your post, and for letting me respond. You gave me a lot to think about and I hope other people will take the time to read your words.

Ooh boy... so much reaching in this tirade. I guess there is no reason to remind you that all of the above is based on speculation that you have somehow twisted into fact in your mind. Even Lindsey's legal complaint didn't implicate Stevie the way you did. Of course this was a united band decision (because, um, it is a band). Everyone probably had different emotions about it, but they came to a resolution very, very quickly, which means there probably wasn't much reason for equivocation.

I guess if there is one side effect of the rise of "fake news" and conservative media, it is the tragic elevation of conspiracy theories into mainstream discourse. Everything is a conspiracy now (despite the fact that not a single conspiracy has ever been proven as fact) and everyone feels that every move is based on some evil shadow organization with malicious intent. So, by all means, let your imagination run wild with Stevie conspiracy theories. You know... there must be a reason why she only wears black...

At the end of the day, Lindsey didn’t sign off on the tour. Sure, he verbally agreed in principle to do it, but something was holding him back from signing off.

Mike broke into “Johnny B. Goode” last night. I think that’s the type of deviation from the script that’s been missing for them. I can’t imagine a scenario where breaking into Chuck Berry wouldn’t make Mick and John’s day.

Lindsey will deviate from his setlist occasionally at his solo shows, at the end of the show, but never with Fleetwood Mac.

If we are going to claim anyone is turning rumors into facts, let's consider the rumors that Lindsey was physically abusive to Stevie, that Lindsey definitely did something horrible the night of Musicares, that Lindsey was abusive to Stevie during SYW..... you can't have it both ways.

No one loved Stevie and her work more than I did. If you had told me years ago that I'd come down on Lindsey's side in a spat between them I'd have thought you were nuts.

For every posting on this board about Stevie screwing over Lindsey there's an equivalent post about Lindsey abusing Stevie, about Lindsey having no talent, about Lindsey's wife being a gold-digger, about Lindsey and his wife not really living together.....etc etc. For every post about Lindsey getting screwed there's at least two posts about how Stevie is perfect, all her songs are perfect, and gleeful comments about how many more solo albums she sold than Lindsey. It's really tough to be a FM fan right now (at least for me) and it's tough actually to come to this board sometimes.
I am really struggling to get behind this incarnation of the group. It has nothing to do with the talent of this group (new and old), but everything to do with the lies, half truths and misinformation that was dispersed at the time we heard LB wasn't touring with them. That, coupled with the lack of regard by the band towards Lindsey's contribution to the FM in their statements was a slap in the face to FM fans of the Rumours 5 lineup. From my perspective, Lindsey and Stevie are bat $h*t crazy FOR and ABOUT each other period. And probably just a bit artistically nuts in general (that's not meant to be negative, misogny, sexist, btw) And that's not to say they are pining away for each other, because I don't mean that and I really don't believe that. Do I think there's love left here? YES. But it's more about how both of their careers would not have happened without each other, and I really do believe that!

The first I heard about this was in one of Lindsey’s interviews, and he admitted it.

Mike was the obvious choice. Lindsey getting sacked and Mike coming on board aren’t necessarily connected. They all knew the easiest way to make money was with the classic lineup. Still, given how fresh Tom’s death was for Stevie, the question of who to get if Lindsey had to go wasn’t something that required much thought.

Which all boils down to the fact I keep coming back to: Nobody knows exactly what went down to get to this point. It could be major, it could be horribly minor, or it could just be a matter of a situation going as far as it can go and a change needing to be made. Lots of speculation, but no actual facts.

The band wasn’t honest in some of their interviews, although Lindsey admittedly did try to delay the tour, so that wasn’t a complete lie. That just seemed like the one thing they could say that wouldn’t slander him publicly. That said, Lindsey admittedly didn’t sign off on the tour, and I’m curious as to what he was holding out for. Otherwise, he would have signed on. There’s just something not quite right about what either side has said.

Mike was the obvious choice.

Only in Stevie's head, and obviously since sometime in 2017.

The obvious choice to everyone else is that she would deign to meet Lindsey halfway for once, regarding issues like schedules and band image or whatever else his requests may have been.
And another obvious choice would be that when she refused to give him an inch as usual and he still expressed a willingness to tour regardless, she wouldn't play the cruelest card of all and wantonly replace him.

Sure. How many other available world class guitarists were there who’ve regularly played a Fleetwood Mac song with two bands, have already had a writing credit on a Fleetwood Mac album, and have toured with a member of the band?

The obvious choice to everyone else is that she would deign to meet Lindsey halfway for once, regarding issues like schedules and band image or whatever else his requests may have been.

Okay, but that ignores the whole “we don’t really know what happened” part of what I was saying. We don’t. Lots of conjecture and speculation, and taking one side as complete gospel before the whole story comes out (which may never happen). It’ll probably be like the Bob Welch lawsuit: lots of outrage, but all love for Mick after all the dust settles. And, I already addressed that the easiest way to make money was with the classic lineup.

Precisely. So in the meantime or for posterity, I choose to stridently side with my current educated guesses based on everything that is available to us.

It's not my intention to ignore or deprive you of the option of shrugging and saying "Who knows?" or "Dearie me, yet another hiccup in the storied saga of Fleetwood Mac."

In short, it is indeed a fact that the band did not fire Lindsey until now. If you have evidence to the contrary, please share. Ugly word or not, that's what they did.
Stop it. Now you're just delving into semantics. When Mick demurs that "firing" is an "ugly word," he is not denying that Fleetwood Mac fired Lindsey. Mick was trying to come up with a less caustic term for what happened... which was that Lindsey was fired. He never, ever said or implied that Lindsey left on his own accord.

It was stated by the band that Stevie suggested Mike to replace Lindsey. Simple reading of band interviews/watching of band interviews on tv should suffice.

So once they decided they couldn't move forward with Lindsey, what were they supposed to do? Just gaze at their navels until a random guitar player fell from the sky? Of course they probably had Options B, C, D, E, etc. when they finally decided to pull the plug on Lindsey. That's just common sense.

It was stated by Mick, Mike, Stevie and perhaps others as well in the tv interviews and Rolling Stone audio interviews that Mike was contacted about replacing Lindsey within days after Musicares. Again, basic reading and listening of recordings of the band.

...and your point is...? What does that have to do with your narrative about everyone being greedy and Stevie holding everyone hostage and acting like a diva and conspiring to get out from under Lindsey's shadow?

If we are going to claim anyone is turning rumors into facts, let's consider the rumors that Lindsey was physically abusive to Stevie, that Lindsey definitely did something horrible the night of Musicares, that Lindsey was abusive to Stevie during SYW..... you can't have it both ways.

We have Carol Ann's account. We have some degree of corroboration regarding Lindsey's anger management issues from Ken Caillat (and Richard Dashut too, I think?). We have Mick's account in his book about Lindsey chasing Stevie around Christine's cul de sac after he announced his departure. There are multiple accounts of the NZ show where Lindsey chucked his guitar at Stevie. Sure, you can be a Lindsey apologist, and that is your right. But the portrait of St. Lindsey that emerges after these accounts of his behavior does not exactly help to negate those allegations.

In other words, one person's trash is another person's treasure. Those who can't stand a single criticism of Stevie do their fair share of reaching and fact-twisting.

Please show me one post by anyone that "Stevie is perfect, all her songs are perfect." I just happen to think that criticism has to be backed by more than just wacky conspiracy theories and connecting dots that are located in different time zones. If you are criticizing her work or her performance, it's all legit as long as you have observed it with your own eyes/ears. But formulating such strong stances about the character of someone you don't really know based on a limited dataset is naïve at best.

Okay. Stop. None of this played any part in Lindsey’s dismissal. At all.

Stevie is probably the queen of jumping on any trend, and I have zero doubt that in the Me Too era it would be all too easy for her to throw Lindsey under the bus if there was any merit to the allegations, especially now.

Is English your second language? I'm not trying to be shady... I'm just trying to justify what I perceive to be poor reading comprehension on your part. And if English is your second language, I totally understand why you're not quite getting my point. My point is that the rise of conservative media has elevated stupid conspiracy theories to the mainstream. I did not call you conservative.

So once they decided they couldn't move forward with Lindsey, what were they supposed to do? Just gaze at their navels until a random guitar player fell from the sky? Of course they probably had Options B, C, D, E, etc. when they finally decided to pull the plug on Lindsey. That's just common sense.

...and your point is...? What does that have to do with your narrative about everyone being greedy and Stevie holding everyone hostage and acting like a diva and conspiring to get out from under Lindsey's shadow?

Sniping at someone who makes a post you disagree with doesn't change the fact that your comments are also based on a number of assumptions about what is and isn't true. Your comments also demonstrate that you have not read many posts. A skim of this thread, others in the Rumours forum, and in the Stevie forum will provide you plenty of posts about Stevie's infallibility. As for 'St. Lindsey', you've clearly not read my posts with care because I've said over and over and over again that Lindsey has been, and I quote, "sh*tty", a "b*astard", an "arse" among many other names, and that I don't blame Stevie for not wanting to work with him any longer. I don't think anyone in this band is a saint. Far from it. But that doesn't fit your narrative.

Stevie isn't capable or running her life, much less a rock band.
And please, don't reduce this to a women vs. men thing. None of them have the musical knowledge and the ability or even the physical status to run a rock band.
Last time I checked, Stevie was a millionaire doing a successful tour with her band of voer 40 years. I don't see how she is not capable, able and doing fine.
FM does indeed tour right now, haven't you heard? So your argument here is just nonsense.

Yep
FM needs Stevie more than ever these days. She does not need to do a thing, just appear on the stage and each band member will make 10 million with her and $200,000 without her.

On the one hand they say Stevie is lazy and on the other they say she's constantly plotting Lindsey's demise. I mean c'mon which is it?

Mike broke into “Johnny B. Goode” last night. I think that’s the type of deviation from the script that’s been missing for them. I can’t imagine a scenario where breaking into Chuck Berry wouldn’t make Mick and John’s day.

I read that. His birthday was on 10/18 and CB was from St. Louis. It was a nice nod from Mike. I hope someone caught that on video.

I haven't seen anyone say he's not talented. I have seen people say his songs are weird.

about Lindsey's wife being a gold-digger,

It's really tough to be a FM fan right now (at least for me) and it's tough actually to come to this board sometimes.
I am really struggling to get behind this incarnation of the group. It has nothing to do with the talent of this group (new and old), but everything to do with the lies, half truths and misinformation that was dispersed at the time we heard LB wasn't touring with them.

What Mick said lines up with what's in Lindsey's lawsuit. Fleetwood Mac hasn't been talking because they were advised not to. We really still only have one side of the story.
It would be great if we could all get along but I think it's too little, too late to start taking the high road now.

How is this not sexism/misogyny to accuse Kristen Buckingham of being a gold digger? You flat-out confess to disliking her for inserting herself in this situation, so why can't people dislike Stevie or Karen for their roles in all this without being accused of misogyny? Sounds pretty convenient to me.

In reading the Rolling Stone article and Lindsey's court filing the takeaways I had were:
I don't think LB and his wife live together 100% of the time.
This is a concerted attack by someone who is very, very practiced at being an emotional terrorist.
Stevie is a god damned saint for putting up with this sh!t for 40 years.

This is probably the craziest conspiracy theory anyone's offered yet in the anti-Lindsey camp. You really outdid yourself this time. So does a lawsuit now qualify as a form of abuse? Calling Stevie a saint is really unbelievable, but at least we know you have zero pretense to objectivity. Not that there was any doubt.

I mean, you hypothesized that Lindsey and his wife "don't live together 100% of the time," while providing zero evidence to back up the claim. And then you acted indignant when people pushed back. So, maybe take your own advice and start there? I assume you're not referring to when he was on the road with Fleetwood Mac, BuckVie, or solo?

I'm not a man. The definition of misogyny specifically relates to the male gender's deep seated hatred of women. I guess you could say it's sexist but it's also true.

So many threads, yet the same gripes about Stevie.
Over and over.
To the point where it's like one big rerun.
I browse through a bit, but don't read all the posts, as it's really an excuse for everybody to repeat the same things, using new threads as an excuse to do it.

Agreed. And Christine is playing the solo w/ Mike on BMW.

I know because it sounds like a 75 year old Christine playing it. It's slightly tired, but great.

As someone who has a spouse...I'd be livid if my spouse used social media to post about what's happening at my work. Faithful and supportive is one thing, but there are limits and I prefer to take care of my own business.

That being said, perhaps Lindsey allowed for this to happen knowing that a pending lawsuit might limit his voice. So it appears manipulation may have been coming from both sides of the camp.
