No solo on Gypsy…

“How dare they play The Chain and having broken it...” Yeah, because Lindsey didn’t do it on his first solo tour after HE broke The Chain (8:25)

“There wasn’t the fire between Neil and Stevie…”

And there isn’t going to be. Pretty unrealistic to expect her to have any chemistry with someone she hardly knows compared with her ex she’s known since she was a teenager. Stevie and Rick really didn’t have any chemistry at first.

Mick and John sounded fine, Neil was on pitch, Mike rocked out when he needed to (though was the shakiest performance). Christine looked great, although got lost in the mix. Not going to say anything about Stevie other than it was a standard performance.

Stevie also performed The Chain at the House of Blues in '91 after she had also bailed on the band. Neither she nor Lindsey were fired then .They had left by their own choice as did Christine in '98. The Chain on Ellen was not terrible . Stevie looking ,pointing and squinting at Neil was terrible or at the very least absurd. Gypsy was pretty bad and that is mostly due to Stevie's vocal performance . I was a fan of the Rumours band in the 1970s and Stevie in her solo prime in real time and remain a fan of the great music produced during those years. However If this is the current state of her voice then she should retire.

So, Lindsey and Stevie can effectively fire the band (or break the chain), but the band can’t fire them?

If you don't get the difference between someone leaving a band on their own accord and getting fired in the twilight years from a band that you were largely responsible for the commercial and artistic success of then there is probably no way that It can be explained.

Lindsey performing The Chain solo vs Stevie performing it solo or even the post-Tango FM iterations performing it are different kettles of fish.

The music and lyrics of that song as we know it is something like 65% Lindsey, 25% Christine and John, and 10% Stevie.

But anyway, the "band" giving Lindsey the boot 20 years after the Dance reunion and at this advanced stage of their lives and legacies and then electing to introduce their new lineup with The Chain was symbolically abominable and creatively deceptive.

Not to mention the choice of performing Gypsy..perhaps the ultimate example of a pretty ordinary Stevie song transformed into something magical by Lindsey's studio handiwork.

Yes there is. I appreciate consistency.

Probably not. I don’t get why it was okay for Lindsey to reach his breaking point with them in 1987 for whatever reason, but they’re forbidden from reaching their own breaking point with him because of subsequent history.

Didn’t get the cheat sheet. I’m sure Mick would have something to say about that split.

I agree that a new lineup at this point is ridiculous, but so was Lindsey quitting in the first place. As was calling a Fleetwood Mac album something else.

Why?

For the reason I stated in the subsequent paragraph.
Context does not seem to be your greatest strength as far as the topic of this thread goes.

Didn’t get the cheat sheet.
Come on, be fair--you have at least quadruple my FM knowledge, so you must know I'm roughly in the right ballpark as far as The Chain contribution breakdown goes.

Attend the DownOnRodeo VIP Experience on the sidelines of Lindsey's concert in Birmingham in November and I will personally hand you a Signature Cheat Sheet with my scientifically proven mathematical breakdowns of contributions to each song (percentages rounded to the nearest whole integer) as well as a hand-crafted dossier explaining in multiple languages that the events of 1987 are completely different to those of 2018.

I’m sure Mick would have something to say about that split.
Perhaps you could pay him 660 USD to ask.
But seriously, kudos to Mick for his contributions within the ranks.

SteveMacD has been doubling down on his support of this **** show since the Ellen performance, almost as if to prove some kind of point, whilst I've disagreed with your opinion since April, you have been quite reasoned. However, you can't possibly think that that performance was in anyway good. Being completely objective, it was trash.

I didn't understand why people were saying Stevie was looking puffy-faced (ie some form of facial treatment), because to me it was Christine who was really inflated. Add to that the ingenious hair design that covers most of her face, and combine that with the lack of sustained close-ups (particularly compared to Stevie), and low lighting, and it's not surprise she comes out on top.

But yes, she reminded me of Carrie Bradshaw, and/but her legs behind that keyboard rack are thinner than Stevie's nasal septum (more worrying than anything).

Speaking of double standards.. let's also turn our scathing eyes to the physical appearance of the men.
- Is Neale Heywood's rugged beard a recent thing or am I just behind the times? He's channeling Clapton.
- Mike Campbell, with all his gimmicky attire, is hiding in plain sight. Who knows what he looks like.
- Neil Finn is wearing all black. Just what this Addams Family Revue needed!
- John certainly is thinner these days.

The problem is not that they fired him. The problem is the way they are continuing without him. If Lindsey had put together a new band in 1987 and called it "Fleetwood Mac," and included Debbie Gibson in the lineup singing Stevie's songs, he would have been a piece of trash. Not unlike the remaining members in 2018. If they had gone on Ellen and done "Don't Stop" and "Rhiannon," MAYBE they could have retained some dignity. But they have proven that they are either completely senile or have annihilated their collective conscience.

Her eyes sparkled and she looked so tall, elegant and slender.

$tevie looked like $he had two pads stuffed in her cheek$. And her outfit is so tired looking. At least Christine updated her Hilary Clinton suit outfits with some vertical stripes. It just enhanced her already tall slim stature.

I think it's the latter. Just ignorance. These songs have lost their meaning long ago because of all the cash grab touring.

Which is why Lindsey had the dignity to do the EP, BuckVie and was probably demanding new music on this tour to move forward, rather than go back to Peter or Bob days.

So ridiculous. I love Stevie but how this was all handled has left a very gross taste in my mouth. She clearly cannot remember the history of her own band and being critical of her does not mean one hates her (though I would agree taking aims at her looks is extremely low and irrelevant).

Regardless, if you can't see how the band performing "The Chain" on live national broadcast television was an incredibly ugly and totally disrespectful move then you deserve the mediocre, bland greatest hits karaoke show you're about to get from now until they're all gone.

I think you're underestimating Stevie's lyrical contributions to The Chain. According to an interview, LB wrote "listen to the wind blow." Most if not all of the other lyrics were hers, which you can hear on the demo version that was included in one of the Rumors reissues.

You can clearly hear The Chain in Christine's instrumental. But when it comes to lyrics. I give $tevie the best of the 3. Even when her lyrics make me laugh, I still usually like them. Bella Donna, especially.

I’m just pointing out the hypocrisy as I see it. And before anyone hits me with the hypocrisy of how they’ve bent over backwards for Stevie, I’ve long thought she should have been shown the door years ago and/or Fleetwood Mac be put on indefinite hiatus for Buckingham Fleetwood McVie. Didn’t happen. I also get that in the years since, the oldest member rejoined and the second oldest survived a cancer scare. And, I had to accept that they’re not doing anything called Fleetwood Mac without Stevie with LBCM. There’s an urgency, now. But then, hasn’t money trumped principle in Fleetwood Mac since Peter Green wanted to give all of their money away?

That said, not a word about the abbreviated version of “Gypsy” in 2014, but it’s somehow a big deal in 2018? It wasn’t as obvious now as it was then that it was shortened for TV?

As for them playing “The Chain” or anything Lindsey was involved with…Legitimate? In all my 23 years on the FM online community, I’ve never heard of anyone having an issue with any of them playing the song until now. It wasn’t an issue with Lindsey doing it in 1993, it wasn’t an issue with Stevie and Rick doing it in 1994, and there wasn’t an issue with Fleetwood Mac calling their 94-95 tour “Another Link In The Chain.” Nor was their ever an issue with Stevie doing her songs from “Tusk” or “Mirage” on her solo tours. Yes, I realize they have since reunited and subsequently gone their separate ways again, but it’s still just a song. What next? Are we going to be pissed that Bob Welch and Billy Burnette continued playing “Oh Well” as solo artists?

The only bad news that can be verified from Ellen is Stevie will still be yelling “And then” during the second verse of “The Chain.”

My biggest gripe is that people think they can accurately judge the new lineup by one singular performance.

My biggest gripe is what they did to Lindsey.

Judging the band is easy knowing that they'll go out

nothing to do with feelings. All to do with talent.

Wow! So many religious people here! Glad what a cover band can accomplish.

I was always a FM Rumours 5 fan. Never care very much about the rest of the musicians who were once part of the band. They’re all dead to me since the day they fired Lindsey. They have lost my respect and support. They’re not the band I used to love and admire.

Many fans here may not have called Lindsey names but they faked admiration since BuckVie and I’m still waiting for them to attend a concert. I prefer to say I don’t like someone (or blatantly hate them) instead of faking tolerance. ;)

Ok, here's the thinking that was behind my breakdown of contributions to The Chain. It's mostly based on the outtakes and final cuts and live performances, rather than books or interviews, so if someone can point to credible evidence to the contrary, please correct me.

Stevie
- Lyrics to the chorus
- Title of the song <--Oops, I'd forgotten about that. That warrants bonus points.
- Harmonies on verse and echoes on chorus

Christine, John and Mick
- The elements from Keep Me There (organ; entire song in minor; etc.)
- That bass line
- Those high "still hear you saying" parts (now performed by Sharon and co.)
- Drums

Lindsey
- Bluegrass acoustic guitar (the first 30 seconds of the track, and again in the middle and throughout)
- Lyrics to the verses (I don't have proof from a book etc., but based on the outtakes I always assumed that these were pretty much provided by Lindsey. See my analysis below also.)
- Sings lead vocal on the chorus and the "running in the shadows" hooks
- Distorted guitar solo (last full minute of the song)
- Production/engineering/arrangement (with Ken etc.)
- (Edit) Isn't he even listed first among the co-writers?

Re: lyrics to the verses
- "Listen to the wind blow" etc. -- sounds like "Listen to the wind on the water" etc. to me
- "Damn this damn that" sounds like Lindsey, particularly during Rumours. Stevie has always gone on about how GYOW is too mean and crude, whereas her 'angry' songs (Silver Springs) were more classy or constructive or something
- The verse lyrics are very sparse, hence surely more Lindsey than Stevie
- The way that the verse lyrics are (IMO) a perfect fit with the bluegrass guitar made me assume that he formulated the lyrics organically while noodling, ie using his approach of "music --> lyrics", as opposed to Stevie's more usual approach of "lyrics --> music"

But we’re supposed to ignore what he did to them?

What--ultimately was ethically unable to support their cocaine-addled tour of madness lest he have a mental breakdown, but yet he stuck it out for over a year in the studio through their crazy behavior to deliver them their bestselling album since Rumours (and let them use his songs and image, even appearing in a concert with them at one point)??? That's not breaking the chain in my book, unless you're Mick "I like hotel rooms" Fleetwood and touring (in grand style) is all that matters in the whole world. That's removing yourself from a chain that was not just already broken, it was wreaking damage to the members and those around them.

Many fans here may not have called Lindsey names but they faked admiration since BuckVie and I’m still waiting for them to attend a concert. I prefer to say I don’t like someone (or blatantly hate them) instead of faking tolerance. ;)

To be fair, concert attendance may not be a reflection on admiration for a band member or not but is likely to come down to logistical, family, financial or health considerations instead

Fans would be more generous if the band’s first foot forward wasn’t anemic covers of classic material. If they’d done something unusual or adventurous—or played a new song—I’d have respected their effort, even if I didn’t like the result (and I might have liked it). But instead, they’ve done what they’ve often done, which is the least amount of work possible. If they’re going to be called a new band, act like one. Citing the conservative approach of previous new lineups as they started isn’t going to cut it this time. The band made a bold move by firing Lyndsey/hiring Mike and Neil: their approach to music making should reflect this. They lost a real opportunity on Ellen. But their decision was sadly predictable.

This is The Time is fantastic live... needs beefier drums (Lindsey and drums!!) but it cranks live.

Steve, I agree with many of your points. The old band has had many dud TV performances, as have Stevie solo and BM. And it’s very possible (and likely) that this band will be much stronger/better live.

That doesn’t mean they didn’t suck and that they missed an opportunity to really come out swinging.

However, I think The Chain is sacred. Clearly more than the band does. I didn’t know Lindsey sang it on solo tours but I think that’s a shame. I didn’t like it when the post-Tango band sang it either.

The song is the heart and anchor of Rumours and the closest FM has to a full band song. No one standing out. And it’s highly personal.

I don’t like when it’s covered by anyone, from Melissa Etheridge in Queen Latifah show to Harry Styles.

Same with this new FM. The song means nothing to Finn/Campbell. And it showed with the awkwardness/no chemistry.

Moreover, I absolutely think it showed zero respect for the many diehard fans who have stood by this band and who are highly disappointed (understatement) by what has happened. To introduce themselves, they chose the one song that defines Rumours 5 the most. It was a crass, thoughtless move.

If they wanted to open with a song that shows the new band as a whole and that everyone knows, they should’ve chosen Don’t Stop.

I think people seem to be under the impression these people have some sort of degree of sentimentality. Perhaps they once did... a long time ago.
Somebody questioned in a thread (bwboy???) whether critics of the current incarnation actually like the band. That has to be a good question. I'd say its possible to be a fan of the music but its increasingly becoming difficult to be a fan of the people. I once idolized all of them. Over the years I've come to realize they are all deeply flawed in character.

I'm not sure what the big deal is? People like the solo and missed it during this performance. No one HAD to acknowledge that it was missing during the 2014 Today Show performance because Lindsey was still in the band and it wasn't a risk that the solo might not be a part of future gigs. Will it be played in future gigs with Neil and Mike? Yeah, probably. But then again, lots of folks acknowledged that in the "Fleetwood Mac on Ellen" thread.

Yeah, I didn't hear Lindsey's "Lightning strikes, maybe once, maybe twice," but maybe this was a condensed version to fit into the TV time, and Neil will sing it on their tour.

Why TF is Mike playing keyboards on Gypsy? They definitely need more keyboard players on stage...

I HATE $tevie'$ singing on the bridge of Gypsy.

I'd guess they dropped the guitar solo at the end, because Lindsey OWNS that f*cking solo. Anyone else playing it is a charlatan and a thief(yes, I realize it was probably dropped for TV time).

I expect that might have to do with television show time constraints on how long the performances could be. We'll see what happens at the iheartradio gig coming up and at the tour shows.

I watched it. Gypsy actually sounded a lot like it always does, minus Lindsey’s guitar solo and harmonies I thought it was fine. Maybe it was because of TV they cut it but I am thinking it might be permanent. It identifies to closely to him in my opinion. I agree with another poster that Gypsy sounds better on her solo tours

Well said, both of you.

I think it was done with full awareness.

I think it was meant as a F. U. to a certain someone. Whether from the band to him or just from Stevie (and Mick?) I dunno. And before the troll sh*tshow starts, no, I can't PROVE it. But let's face it--people (others, not you and me and a few others) should face facts: the new lineup is being criticized by sensible people because, quite frankly, they aren't acting like a new lineup at all. They are doing as little as necessary to "carry on" and make money and bamboozle masses of people into seeing their next tour.

If Mick is going to tout the new lineup as relevant and if some stubborn and/or delusional fans are going to defend the new lineup, then the actual band as it exists right now needs to DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT--ie: new music, a new approach to well-worn material. The new blood need to make their mark, and the veterans need to step up their game. Stretch, expand, grow. All of that comes with "new lineup"/ "new" band.

Weak minded is a phrase that was introduced by a moderator recently in another thread. Maybe review a few more recent posts before trying to point out hypocrisy on my part.

Weak minded was also meant as a not-so-subtle jab at me. All I’ve done is suggest that perhaps what’s actually the weak minded position is to call people bitches and hoes or to think that doing so is funny.

And I haven’t called any one person a whiny baby. But if someone admits that they “cried like a baby,” and then whines about the goings on in Fleetwood Mac, I don’t know - you can draw your own conclusions from that, I guess.

You're too easy.

We are inundated with it ALL day. Do you not agree? Don't you want to just not hear about it for two G damn seconds? I know I do. For the love of God I am begging you, not to get into politics on this board.

You don't think that person was more than a little
over the top with their response to what I wrote?

He/she and one other always cry a little too loud.

Nope I'm not over the top. Like I said I hear about politics these days WAY too much. I need a break sometimes as we all do.

Didn’t you just say in another thread that you had “cried like a baby” because of your disdain for the new Fleetwood Mac?

I think by your own admission then, you are in fact a whiny baby.

And based on that, I do have a clue about how you feel and what Fleetwood Mac means to you.

I was also not talking to you or about you in the post above. “Weak-minded” was a reference to something in another thread. So if you identified with something in my post, that’s on you.

Lastly, shooting the **** about a band does not have to include calling it’s members bitches or hoes or any other slur.

Did you not know that "cried like a baby" is a saying? Yes, I cried, not ashamed to admit that.

No, I did not admit to being a whiny baby. You are "thinking" incorrectly.

And I have never called anyone a "ho" or a "bitch."

Well said, both of you.

I would possibly disagree however, that the choice of The Chain was thoughtless.

I think it was done with full awareness.

I think it was meant as a F. U. to a certain someone. Whether from the band to him or just from Stevie (and Mick?) I dunno. And before the troll sh*tshow starts, no, I can't PROVE it. I just feel it, and given the above mentioned deeply flawed characters involved, it seems very plausible to me. If you don't agree, well, it's a free country.

See, this is the type of drama that seems completely unnecessary to interject into the conversation. I can guarantee you that they weren’t thinking of Lindsey when they picked The Chain.

Just from a practical perspective, The Chain is one of their better known songs, it features the voices together, has brief male lead vocals, and has a blazing guitar solo. Perfect way to show the new male lead vocalist and the new lead guitarist within the context of the band.

I agree with everything you said. For a band with 3 vocalists the Chain is the perfect song to showcase the new lineup. Not to mention, it's a killer song, a crowd pleaser, and was featured recently in a huge movie. The idea that they performed it as some sort of vendetta against Lindsey is typical of some people's mindset against Fleetwood Mac. It's not like they performed Big Love or Never Going Back Again.

I agree with you, Nathan. So tired of the crude name calling and certain people taking over the ledge forums, and bullying other people. This has become such a negative place to hang out now. Not enjoyable. But I'm sure I will be called things and criticised for what I just wrote. This use to be the place to hang for me when life got hard, now it's just depressing. Life just got harder for me, as in one hour I will find out if my grown son has cancer, my mom was just diagnosed with lung cancer in July and has few months to live. I thought coming here would be a stress reliever, but it is causing stress. I know I'm not the only one who feels like this, but if they speak up they will be attacked.
So I will leave the Ledge for those who want to rule it, and hope one day it will become a friendly place again.
Peace out!

Alison, I hope you know that there are people here praying for you and your family.

Also, "the chain" of the band as an entity isn't broken. It soldiers on as it has for many decades. No snide messages there.

A "guarantee" about the song choice decision-making process -- a process you certainly were not involved in. Who's being dramatic now? :wavey:

I think the song choice was deliberate and made with Lindsey in mind. You have to put yourself in their shoes. This is the band that called the 94/95 tour, the "Another Link in the Chain" tour. It seems like "The Chain" has come to symbolize, at least in Mick's mind, the many links in this band's complicated story rather than a binding force keeping the Rumours 5 together. It sucks because I have to imagine that is a minority view among fans.

Plus, SteveMacD is right, it does showcase the new guys, which in and of itself is kind of a bold strategy... Given everyone's reaction around here, I don't think it paid off.

There is something seriously wrong with you.

The real question is "who really did break the chain?" Lindsey? FM? Or maybe the supplemental links of Neil and Mike signified that "The Chain" was never really broken at all.
