View Full Version : Can Lindsey take legal action to keep his songs off the tour’s set list?

Anyone know of an experienced entertainment attorney
who can speak to this?
Curious if Lindsey can prevent FM from playing his songs on the upcoming tour.
I would, if I were him.
I’ll go to the LA shows, but I don’t want to hear them do his songs. I think it would be salt in the wound, and disrespectful.

Plus it would make LB look a bit petty. Probably not his preference to 'take it out' on FM fans by preventing them from hearing songs he wrote.
To be honest, if I was him my wound would be much saltier if they didn't play any of my stuff--i.e. removing all trace of me and my legacy.
But keep looking for a good entertainment attorney--Peter Green might want to hire one, to get a restraining order against Stevie Nicks singing Rattlesnake Shake!

I don't see them playing his "songs". The only song they may do is GYOW. Its the classic ending to a Mac concert.

World Turning (which is a Buckingham/McVie tune)
Go Your Own Way
That's it.. Not a lot to pay out.

I think the only Lindsey songs we'll hear are:
Hold Me (since Christine recently did it on the BuckVie tour)
World Turning
Go Your Own Way
I can't see them doing Tusk (Neil Finn doesn't seem like he has the "crazy" personality for this song to work on stage)
No Big Love. No Never Going Back Again. No I'm So Afraid.
They're going to fill the gap with a broader set of songs from their early days, along with a couple of Crowded House songs, a Tom Petty song, and a solo song or two from Stevie.
At least that's what I think.....

Agreed. But they dropped the key from D to B, so the "sound" of it changed too much with just that.
And I swear neither she nor Brett was playing that piano part. #lamez

You think his "family on the road" will do those songs now that they fired him? Luckily they will only do GYOW(awfully, probably), and I can already hear it on his solo tour, so I'm ok.
I'm sure Stevie fest will be fine without Lindsey's songs.

I agree with the previous poster that if I were Lindsey I would be more hurt by them not playing any of my songs. There are some they just have to do, like Go Your Own Way and Second Hand News.
And if you include the duets, Don't Stop, World Turning and maybe Hold Me.
I agree that Tusk will not be played. Neil doesn't have the chops for it.
But imagine if he did sue. It would shatter any shreds of a reputation that he has left. It would look so petty. As much as some Ledgies might want him to sue, there is no way he will, he would see himself as better than that.

Amen!!
There are some Stevie songs I could do without, too- Rhiannon and Gold Dust Woman, for starters. My only hope is she'll just do one of these, but that's wishful thinking on my part. I would even rather hear When I See You Again than the other two, and I HATE that song!

Let them play all of his songs and send him the royalties. Honestly, I think the only 2 they will do are GYOW and Neil's new fave, "World IS Turning". I agree Neil doesn't have the chops for "Tusk" and I think fans will miss that one---it's fun to watch when they do it live. Stevie has said many times, "There are like 10 songs we NEED to do" and although she's never said which ones, a fair bit of them are LB's. I think Neil will be painful to listen to on "Don't Stop" the same way Stevie made my ears bleed on it when she took over for Christine. There's no way they are pulling that one though. I am curious to see what they throw in to make up for what they are pulling out for LB---and how quickly they can pivot when "Rattlesnake Shake" and "Sentimental Lady" don't do it for this crowd. You are going to wind up with 25KG. By the end of this tour, "Standback" and "Edge of Seventeen" will have made it into the set list.

I guess I'm in the minority here but I always loved NTF in concert, sans the Lindsey maniacal vocals. And always was hoping for a plugged in "Big Love". Probably never would have happened anyway, but now it's definite.

Not sure about Edge of Seventeen (until Stevie fires Mike and replaces him with Waddy), but Stand Back sure seems like a safe bet.
I would be surprised if they dropped Don't Stop from the outset. Not only is it a radio staple and Christine's song, it would be a nice fit with the 'positive growth' 'moving on' sort of narrative they're likely keen to be portraying. Maybe they'll hand out free kool-aid during the song.

exactly. they didn't drop Don't Stop even when Christine was not in the band. it's their most popular and most recognizable song. and they are going for hits and recognizable now to dig themselves out of the hole and prove how they are oh so hot and don't need Lindsey.
so yeah, they will play both Don't Stop and Don't Dream It's Over. you know, the hits.
Fleetwood Mac / Mick and Stevie don't have the actual balls of Lindsey and Christine who could have easily played Don't Stop on BuckVie tour (if they wanted to go easy hits route instead of new music!) and yet they decided against it. instead they played Hold Me which would have definitely been in the set if LB was touring with FM. now it's anybody's bet.

I agree they will play "Don't Stop" Didn't mean to imply they wouldn't. My point was I didn't like it when Stevie sang Christine's spots and I can't imagine Neil's lead on LB's vocals here.
For me, "Tusk" is a clear depiction of Lindsey's vision for what he wanted that album to be, culminated by his command of the entire stage for the song live. Based on videos of NF i've seen, I don't see him able to take a crack at that (can't see GYOW either, but at least then he just needs to stand behind a mic and sing)

I wouldn't necessarily want them to play Tusk but I think they could if they wanted to. They needn't play it as it has been over the years and could re-imagine the song. In fact, Stevie could even do all Lindsey's vocals and do a maniacal dance. Of course, it would be a real slap in the face if that happened...so watch this space.

Honestly I don’t think any of his songs will be played other than possibly don’t stop which really isn’t his or possibly go your own way which I could live without hearing for the 6 million time. I think they will focus on Stevie and Christine. They may play songs that he sang pieces of but the songs he wrote by himself I don’t think will be included.

I respect that. I just find all of the narrative amusing. All of those songs are great. And I loved hearing YMLF and LL back in the set list this last tour.
I am more fascinated now by what makes it onto the set list. The interesting aspects to the years Christine wasn't in the band was the songs they put in to fill in the holes. I loved that. I am going to be honest, I wouldn't have interest in hearing DDIO or any TPH stuff at a FM concert. That's my opinion though. I am curious what they throw in. They left "Don't Stop" when Christine left and I would expect them to leave "GYOW" too. I believe Mick (I may be wrong) has stated those 2 songs will always be show "closers" for them. We shall see!

I spoke to an atty. friend of mine down here in the Big Easy. She said that publishing rights differ from performance rights. The songwriters typically cede performance rights to the recording entity. Therefore bitter splits rarely wind up taking songs out of a band's set list. So, while Lindsey Stevie Chris hold the publishing rights to the songs. they can't prevent Fleetwood Mac from using them in perpetuity.

I guess I'm in the minority here but I always loved NTF in concert, sans the Lindsey maniacal vocals.
In my estimation, the best, wildest, most unhinged jamming that configuration of the band ever did was during the last month of the 1980 tour doing "Not That Funny." I got to see a bunch of shows at that point. It lasted an unbelievably long time, but it had spectacular dynamic range — crashingly loud to whispery soft — and storytelling strength, with suspenseful rising action, climax, and post-orgasm denouement. Those performances were very witty, too, with Lindsey and John mocking each other's riffs in different octaves. If you get the chance to listen to a "Not That Funny" from August 1980, take it.
It's that extreme dynamic variation that separates that era of Fleetwood Mac live from later eras. Listen to the way the band hunkers down in the first few minutes of "World Turning" on the Tusk Deluxe (from 1980 performances), and then lets out with a screaming lead. Compare the momentum and buildup of "The Chain" on Tusk Deluxe with "The Chain" in recent years (from Vito-Burnette to the present). The former slinks across the dynamic spectrum ("powder keg detonation," as Steve Pond put it in a review) in tantalizing sonic stride, whereas later performances became all uniformly forte to fortissimo. It's boring. It's the same problem that dogs Stevie's solo shows. Her band just blasts through on everything, forcing her wizened vocal into a nasally bleat, even on songs you want her to pull back on to create dynamic tension.

That's exactly right. Creativity can create or hurt commerce. $tevie is very careful about that. I was so proud of the BuckVie album. I wish it was a little deeper and fuller. But, Carnival Begin was a fantastic way to end it for me. Ironic, when you listen to the context of the material.

You are 100% correct. But I am referring to Fleetwood Mac, and as has been discussed many times on this board, that is not “Fleetwood Mac”.
I've been listening to BuckVie a lot this week. Pisses me off to think there could have been so much more of this kind of creativity from the band. It's sad that it had to end with that recording as far as Lindsey's involvement with FM goes. Bummer.

I will miss a couple of Lindsey's songs, but to be honest, would prefer they don't do ANY of his material so it opens up space to perhaps hear some deep cuts we haven't heard or haven't heard for a long time. We have the opportunity for a fresh set list and I hope they don't waste it.

It would be a fresh set list if they have produced new songs since their last tour. They haven't. And we all know who's responsible for that. So, same old songs.
