The day before LeAnn Rimes releases her Re-Imagined EP, a collection putting unique new spins on some of her best-known songs, the country-pop powerhouse unleashes another surprise track from the collection. And this one comes with a bona fide rock superstar attached. Stevie Nicks, whose work as a solo artist ands as a member of Fleetwood Mac have influenced Rimes for decades, joins her on an updated rendition of “Borrowed,” a track originally featured on Rimes’ brilliant, yet underappreciated, 2013 LP Spitfire.

Written by Rimes with Darrell Brown and Dan Wilson, and produced by Rimes, Brown and Nicks with famed guitarist Waddy Wachtel, this updated version of “Borrowed” finds the two singers sharing melody and harmony, imbuing the tune with emotional depth yet never overpowering each other. The result is a bittersweet country ballad with just a touch of glittering pop-rock magic.

Nicks, who refers to the “How Do I Live” singer as “the best I have ever sung with,” notes that she chose to record “Borrowed” for Re-Imagined after Rimes sang it on The Tonight Show in 2013.

“I stopped in my tracks and sat down on the floor and started to cry,” the rock icon tells Rolling Stone. “I understood what she was singing about. I understood that the pain was real… and I understood that it had happened to me. When the song ended, I called my assistant to tell her that one day, I would sing this song with LeAnn. It was our destiny.”

Nicks, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with her Fleetwood Mac cohorts, says of Rimes as a vocalist, “You can’t compete with her; you can only keep up with her. To sing with her is to be blessed. She teaches you; she takes you along for the ride. She takes you on her journey and you arrive a much better singer."

"Stevie has been inspiring me as a songwriter and performer since I can remember,” adds Rimes. “To know that my music has seeped its way into her heart the way her music has into mine is magical. Connecting with her, not only musically, but on a soul level – understanding what it’s like to be a woman with passion, a pen and a desire to tell the most authentic, heartfelt truth through song, has been an experience that’s forever left an imprint on my life.”
The Re-Imagined EP, also featuring newly crafted versions of such Rimes hits as “Blue,” “How Do I Live” and “Can’t Fight the Moonlight,” is available June 20th.

I'm not a fan of LeAnn Rimes but this song is pretty damn good. The harmonies are gorgeous. Thanks for posting!

Be careful if you're going to Amazon to buy this, guys. There's an older version of "Borrowed" that doesn't have Stevie on it. It looks like the "Re-Imagined" one isn't available yet, although other "Re-Imagined" tracks are.

Please tell me this isn't going to be one of those things where you have to buy the whole EP to get the Stevie track....

I love it when Stevie sneaks a duet in on us. I don't think any of us had a clue this was even happening unless I missed something. I love it.

So do we really think that Stevie believes Rimes is the best she's ever sung with, or is this maybe Stevie being generous?

I don't want to over-analyze what is a compliment- it's like when someone makes you dinner, you say, "That was the best ever." It's not like you line up every dinner you ever had and do a taste test. ;) It was just what it was- how she felt in the moment.

I agree- the harmonies are gorgeous. This was a nice surprise.

super fun to hear a new track...however, I feel the producer and engineer did nothing nuanced with SN's harmony track. It is there, seemingly untouched, layered evenly over the lead vocal like fondant over a cake--same thickness, same consistency throughout. This is where LB would've shined by pushing and pulling and resting the right tones/notes, using dynamics and reverb and whatever else.

Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying the hell out of some new music and glad that she is asked to do these things.

I wondered the same thing. It's from the perspective of a woman who's with a guy who belongs to someone else, so I'm guessing the lyrics remind Stevie of one of the married men that she has dated. The question is - which one? (Assuming she only had one guy in mind.)

Well Stevie's dramatic but I would assume it's more than one guy. She was involved with various married/taken men (Mick, Derek Taylor, Rupert Hine, the rehab guy she wrote FWIW about, etc). Why she did that numerous times I don't really understand but she probably was just able to relate to the feeling the song conveyed about that type of situation.

I just purchased the single off iTunes and it's only the one song. I'm in Australia so it should be available over there pretty soon.

Nice harmony, but as someone already said more could've been done to make it pop a little.

Thanks for sharing, I had no idea this was on the way.

This is a perfect description. The only thing I might possibly add is that it seems LeeAnn is at a slightly louder volume, or she was layered over Stevie, almost like Stevie was standing behind her singing so Stevie's voice is hard to discern in the mix. All that aside, it's a pretty enough song and another little nice surprise!

It’s a good duet but Stevie is kept in a three-four note register the entire time. I wish there was one point in the song to feature her breaking out a little more.

Still, it’s very good. Her warm contralto anchors Rimes’s lovely, flightier notes.

Leann co-wrote “Borrowed” about her affair with Eddie Cibrian when both she and Cibrian were still married to other people.

It’s quite touching and lonely how Stevie could sadly relate, especially considering that she’s alone. In addition, I’m not buying that “gave up being a wife for my music” story. While that notion may have been true at age 35-40, it’s certainly not the same sentiment that one feels at 70. I have a feeling that the reason Stevie likes to stay so busy is that she has no one to go home to.

A prior post listed Derek Taylor as one of Stevie’s past affairs. The subject of the song “Beautiful Child”—Derek (road manager of The Beatles) married his wife Joan in 1958. Thus, the line “you fell in love when I was only 10”. They were married for nearly 40 years, until his death in 1997.

Why she did that numerous times I don't really understand but she probably was just able to relate to the feeling the song conveyed about that type of situation.

Two of her "great love affairs" - Mick and Joe Walsh - were carried on while the men were married. However, I doubt "Borrowed" applies to Joe, who separated from his wife by 1985 although not divorcing her until 1988, and while touring with Stevie in 1983 apparently wasn't spending too much time with the mother of his child. Tsk, tsk. He was not faithful to Stevie as their affair wound down, certainly. And yet Stevie apparently fantasized about giving up her career to marry him... that's what I don't understand!

But I digress. Was she drawn to married men? Was there something about "forbidden fruit"? Was it the idea that in the end, she knew that it wouldn't be permanent - maybe deep down she really didn't want something permanent?

Maybe, but I think it was just because most of the men she worked most closely with were married, and those were the men she connected with. When it came to their marital status her attitude was "Hey, if he wants it, and I want it, it's all good. Love is what's important" etc. etc. In other words, she simply didn't care. No guilt, no hesitation, no sense that she was doing anything wrong if it was done in the name of love. JMHO.

There is one line from "Borrowed" that acknowledges such affairs are wrong, which problematizes my theory a bit, but nothing says this song has to match her feelings beat-for-beat for her to relate to the main theme.... "I don't want to give you back" to the significant other.

Good point @watchchain I'm sure, that even now, she's had her share of men wanting to court her. Something is just plain OFF in her relationships. Can't pin it down, BUT you'd think that even in the last 20 years, since she's been 50, that she'd want to "settle down" with someone she could talk to, go out with and just be around. There's plenty of guys, many successful, around her age who would just love to sit down and have a nice dinner and just talk to. Again, somethings just off there. Is it them or is it her??

This is an interesting thread. First, I just want to say that I don't believe a person has to be married in order to have a happy, complete life. Stevie has said several times she has regrets about relationships not working out and not having children. But at her age now, I doubt she still feels that regret as much. Also, I think I've read she has family members and assistants living with her. I do not think a potential husband would want to live with several other adults, especially when they're all going to side with your wife every time LOL! And I think Stevie is happy with the way her life is now, and she would be unwilling to leave her family/friends/employees for a husband.

She talked about this fall to the floor memory already when she was discussing Moonlight and how the Twilight characters were just like Lindsey and her....that was the first thing I thought of as she's mentioned this scenario before :shrug:

But there has been A LOT of affairs with married men so it could be one of many she is thinking about....?

She said the two characters in Twilight in general reminded her of her and Lindsey which is why she brought out Lady From the Mountain after watching it but with the specific scene where Bella falls on the forest floor after Edward leaves I believe that reminded her of Joe Walsh, just from how she talked about it. Wow everything about this sentence was cringeworthy lol.

Those folks drop to the forest floor frozen and all that (side note: I seriously watched those movies just because of Stevie, and kept waiting for some winter forest scene whether they both collapse... LOL). I only knew about the SnL connection. I didn't realize that was some kind of Joe Walsh reference somehow... not sure I want to know more there...

However, the lyric it most reminds me of is the one from Love Is: "And her heart broke down - she cried - she fell to the floor." Do we know who that is about? Or is "fall to the floor" just a way Stevie dramatically expresses feeling overwhelming emotion?

She said when Edward leaves in the second movie and Bella is all sad and depressed reminded her of a time in her life when someone left and she was all sad and depressed and just from how she talked about it I'm pretty sure that was about Joe. Other than that she did say that the Edward character reminded her of how Lindsey was because he's all dark and twisty and gorgeous.
I've always heard that Love Is is about the same thing as the FWIW situation.
And I think it's just a certain melodramatic Stevie thing.

I really like this song and Leann is such a great singer. I forget how great she is because you don't hear her on the radio. It's all the "country rock" male singers. There are places where they sound so good together and then places where the vocals don't mesh well at all. So as a duet, it's a little up and down for me. But I'm so glad to have this. I'm glad she's doing something besides touring all the time.

Yeah, I think the song is nice but it's not something I will play often. At least on the Lana duet Stevie got her own verse. This is like a Bananarama song where the girls sing together for the entire song. lol

Breaking out in what? A coughing fit? She's not capable of any strenuous vocals nowadays due to age, her years as a smoker, years of poor technique corrected too late, and the damage to her nose from her coke habit.

"Because I'm Stevie Nicks". and......because he's just Joe Blow?

Thanks for that information about Beautiful Child, I’ve wondered about that one for years.

I think her feelings on being single might be a little bit different now too, if she were being honest.

I hate to say it, but I do not care for this duet. It’s kind of a bummer.

Always glad to see her do something new though, regardless!

The effect of this is sort of what it must be like to listen to me sing along to the radio in the car. I've only got a few notes of range to work with comfortably, and I try to sing as softly as possible so as not to mess up the listening experience too much for other passengers.

Personally I don’t find this comment fair. LeAnn is doing some pretty incredible vocal acrobatics on the song. It would be almost impossible to harmonize on those parts. I enjoy the young woman vs experienced older woman dynamic on the song.

I agree on both counts. The vocals are fine but it's the subject matter that annoy's me. How many times have we had to be blunt with a friend who is dating a married man, to let him/her know the guy will always go home to the wife? This is a song that celebrates the cheaters. Not cool.

Stevie Nicks and LeAnn Rimes share heartbreak in new duet

By PABLO ARAUZ PENA

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Stevie Nicks cried on her living room floor when she first saw LeAnn Rimes perform “Borrowed” on her TV in 2013.

The song, about an intimate, yet fleeting romance between Rimes and her lover, came out on Rimes’ “Spitfire” album when Nicks became enamored with it. The Fleetwood Mac singer knew then that she wanted to sing it with Rimes someday.

“It was very easy for me to try to be in that same sad, deeply tragic, passionate place where she was when she wrote that song because I had been there. I had lived there for a long time,” Nicks said in an interview with The Associated Press from Mexico, where she was on vacation.

Nicks heard from mutual friend and producer Darrell Brown, who co-wrote “Borrowed,” that Rimes was planning to touch up some of her hits for her “Re-Imagined” EP, and she jumped at the chance to record a duet version with Rimes.

“Being able to have another artist really kind of get you on so many levels in that authenticity and from that space is really magical,” said Rimes.

The new version, released last month, balances Nicks’ soft croon to Rimes’ striking vocals. Like in the previous version, a cool and fading steel guitar compliments the rhythmic melody and calming percussion.

Even though Nicks has been singing and recording long before Rimes was on the scene, she said working with her is like going to singing college.

“She doesn’t brush over anything,” said 70-year-old Nicks. “You have to sing every single word with her; otherwise it won’t be a good duet because she would leave you in the dust.”

Rimes, 35, became a star as a teen and launched hits such as “Blue,” “How Do I Live” and “Can’t Fight the Moonlight.” She won the best new artist Grammy at age 14.

Both singers come from different musical backgrounds. Nicks is a rock ‘n' roll magnate from Phoenix and Rimes has country roots in Texas, but their voices reflect on a shared passion where heartbreak isn’t bound by place, time or genre.

Rimes said she came up with the idea for the song during an emotionally troubling moment on an airplane when she noticed someone reading a tabloid magazine with her on the cover. She started to cry when the stranger’s husband came to her comfort.

“I honestly feel like that guy was an angel,” she said. “Some things came over me at that moment and I just remember thinking that title (“Borrowed”) to myself.”

The first line of the song came to Rimes: “I know you’re not mine. Only borrowed.” From there, she took it to the studio where she fleshed out the rest of the tune.

“It’s a very honest, authentic moment and capturing a piece of me that I really didn’t know existed until I wrote this song,” said Rimes.

Rimes is currently on a summer tour and Nicks is hitting the road with Fleetwood Mac in the fall. Both singers said they hope to perform the song together someday.

“I would love to do a record with LeAnn,” said Nicks. “I’m hoping that for some reason we'll get to go onstage and sing this song together.”

Like Stevie goes into studios and does "records" a lot. No "record" since 2014.
