All The Rock Legends You Should Catch On Tour This Year

Fleetwood Mac

This is probably going to be the most divisive entry on this list, and your inclination to attend probably boils down to how much you value singer/guitarist Lindsey Buckingham’s impact on the sound and aesthetic of Fleetwood Mac. The group, who have changed lineups multiple times over years, are banking on the idea that their decision to fire Buckingham won’t impact fans desire to hear Stevie Nicks belt out “Landslide” on a nightly basis. Maybe that’s true, but a lot of the magic of the band is the theater of tension/affection onstage exhibited onstage between Nicks and her former paramour. We’ll see how Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell and singer Neil Finn can fill the roles.

If they have any decency, they will drop her bellowing Landslide...

 I can't take another listen to her butcher that song.

landslide butchered? I agree, I’d be beyond ecstatic if it were dropped but it’s one of those songs that in the moment live I always enjoy because she sings it so well (at least in my opinion) it’s not both tired and done terribly like Gypsy Dreams and Rhiannon (but again I have high hopes for a Rhiannon Revival with Mike Campbell! )

Landslide is still beautiful but Rhiannon has been dreary for a long time, sadly. I guess they feel obligated to do it anyway. Campbell cannot save it because Stevie cannot sing it anymore. She has flattened it out.

If the band had any sense they would drop Landslide and let Stevie perform Man of the world instead. If one of the new guys sing it, half the arena will walk out. But Stevie keeps the casual fan's asses in the seats. That could be their slow acoustic song instead of Landslide.

So Mick is saying that Stevie wants to sing "Black Magic Woman." Is that a joke? She obviously thinks it applies to herself, so is she going to change the lyrics? That's a really bad idea, I think... parts of the song would become really awkward.

It would be very awkward. The idea of a 70-year-old woman doing a song written from the p.o.v. of a young, pessimistic working-class bloke enamored of the blues and sex with a hot babe . . . . I guess all that gets lost when the song is fifty years old or whatever it is.

The idea of Nicks trying Man of the World is even more ludicrous because the vocal requires a soaring howl of pain and a throw-it-all-away recklessness that Nicks hasn't touched since her Fritz days.

No, if she wants to switch out her old stinkers for some new ones, I think she's better off doing some of the Holly and Ronstadt songs she's tried successfully in recent years: Poor Poor Pitiful Me, It's So Easy, Not Fade Away, etc.

I could easily see the band working a "Black Magic Woman" interlude into the 9 minute version of "Gold Dust Woman"--with Stevie on vocals. It's quite comical that the High Priestess wants to take a stab at "Black Magic Woman". Sit back, relax, and pop a bowl of popcorn. This should be good.

Kinda off-topic, but... I'm seeing Mike Nesmith and Micky Dolenz in PA this Thursday - they belong on this list!

mods should really step up a bit. way too many personal attacks on posters here (and i haven't even had time to check much lately so there's probably much much more i haven't seen), apparently just because someone's favorite singer turned out not to be a saint.

Yeah Stevie was as promiscuous as any number of male rock stars in her time and probably guzzled as much booze as well..and as for snorting coke she'd rank near the top so I don't think she was on anyone's list for canonization.

While I do agree, I was subjected to two very personal attacks, a couple months ago, and nothing was done about it. And even after pointing it out here, didn't receive much support or acknowledgement(on the ledge, anyway). So I wouldn't expect too much...

All that said, I DO think I'd prefer "nothing" over the molly coddling of the "Ethan Ledge" days.

BUT, if all is fair in love and war, it should be stated as such, so that there is no selective enforcement.

Just my 2 cents.

I mean she had a very severe drug addiction which likely impacted lots of aspects of her behavior and personality. Maybe she wouldn't have done a lot of the somewhat morally questionable things she did had it not been for that addiction.

If the ousting of one member of a dinosaur pop band turns one into a borderline personality and a online troll, frankly I do think you need help.

Ugh, I loathe it when people take the insult and turn it into the "I'm totally serious" version. The insult, while I can see how some could be offended... well, I usually don't make a federal case of it. It's just a variation of "You're crazy."

However, when it escalates to "I'm serious".... if someone really can sit there and act like they are 100% confident that they can accurately diagnose a complete stranger of a serious mental illness based on their internet posts....

Well, then they really have no clue about what goes into that kind of diagnosis, and no clue about what it really means to have a mental illness.

And that IS offensive.

Sorry.

(Mitzo, this isn't just directed at you. It's a VERY common thing to post and it just frustrates me how so many people are so very quick to say, in all seriousness, that they spot mental illness in their opponents and others.)

Agreed.

I have a morbid fascination with what a **** show this tour has the potential to be. Anyone thinking they won't do Landslide, Dreams, Rhiannon, and Silver Springs is fooling him/herself.

They will very likely do: Little Lies, Say You Love Me, Don't Stop, World Turning, and Everywhere.

The question is what change-ups will be included? Will they do Black Magic Woman (doubt it), Oh Well (likely), Hypnotized (doubt it), Station Man (possibly), Tell Me All the Things You Do (an intriguing possibility), or go even deeper with jewels like Child of Mine, Jumping at Shadows, Future Games, or Dust?

They will likely do a Tom Petty tune, a few solo Stevie numbers. But will they try Christine's "One in a Million"? They will also probably play a Crowded House tune--much to the embarrassment of all.

The more chances they take, the more potentially interesting the shows will be. I doubt, however, they will stray much from their existing, already-tired and tiresome setlist.

If they do GYOW I'll laugh and laugh and laugh.

sodascouts

I seriously doubt they will do any of those mega-obscure numbers. I think they'll only do two older numbers besides Oh Well maximum, despite all the talk of history, and why not Black Magic Woman? At least people would know that one.

I also seriously doubt they will do Silver Springs. They must realize it will make everyone feel Lindsey's loss on stage, and miss that interplay. Stevie has tied Lindsey to it in performance as well as in theme. No amount of mic stand ribbon-swishing will distract from that.

You can bet they will do GYOW. It was a big hit.

FuzzyPlum
06-21-2018, 03:30 PM
In the recent Variety interview Neil admitted its unlikely they'll play much of the older stuff. It sounds like Man of the World is likely and I'd guess at Oh Well too. Danny's passing makes Station Man even more likely. I think that'll probably be it. He suggested they'll probably play one or two Neil Finn songs.
Basically it'll be all the big hits from Chris and Stevie + The Chain + Go Your Own Way + 3 old FM songs + 2 Neil Finn songs + Stop Draggin My Heart Around. The only other maybe might be Tusk.

I read that Neil Finn interview and he outright said that there's probably not gonna be much pre-BN songs on the set list at the end, which is what I've been saying forever lol.
I'm absolutely positive that the tour is going to be mostly the same songs were all used to. But no way they'll do Silver Springs. Stevie doesn't even perform it on her solo tours. There's no point to do the song anymore. If they did I would truly be shocked.

They did Chicken Shack and Christine Perfect songs when Christine joined the band. They initially did two Buckingham Nicks songs when they joined. They did two Dave Mason songs a show, and sometimes two Billy Burnette non-Fleetwood Mac songs 94-95. Why change the rules now?

Technically, you have a point, but it’s not really the same thing now. When Christine joined in 1970, the band was making serious bread and butter on the US touring circuit where most concert goers knew of the band generally—“British Blues Band.” They could have played John Mayall songs and most people wouldn’t have noticed. By 1975, the band had built up a respectable following but, mostly, the band’s identity as a “British Blues Band” hadn’t changed. They did a lot of old songs and some new ones, some Mac tunes, a couple BN tunes—but very quickly that combination of five people made some real headway. By 1979, the only oldie in the band’s set was “Oh Well.” When LB left in 87, his replacements reintroduced some Green material but it was mostly tolerated by fans who went to the shows to hear Rumours-lineup hits. In 1995, FM was pretty much a joke to the mass public, a dated dinosaur minus all of its famous front line. They could play anything they wanted because the stakes were so low.

Now, in 2018, the band is known to its gazillion fans primarily as a legacy act, one that features SN and LB in particular. Throughout the 2000s, there were some “deep cuts” and a BN song here or there, but it was all original material. Christine’s return meant the full and complete return to the greatest hits rundown. THIS is the band people expect to see. Now, ironically, the diehard fans have been wanting a change in setlist for years and years. The “new” FM is going to give us some of that—but at what cost? Who, after the heights of commercial success, wants to hear Crowded House or Tom Petty songs in an FM setlist NOW?

What we die-hardship wanted (and what Lindsey wanted) was a creative and fresh approach from the Rumours five. Unusual inclusions of old material mixed with the band touring and supporting NEW music. I doubt we’ll really get a fresh approach with the “new” band since its surprises won’t really be surprising. All of the twists will likely be all-too predictable and easy.

I've never heard any person called a "suckage" so I think you may be out of luck there! It's more of an object noun, completely divorced from any lascivious origins. This usage might be more appropriate:

"Can you believe what happened to Lindsey? That was some major suckage."

or, more creatively:

"Mick and Stevie have reduced Fleetwood Mac to a pile of suckage."

Yes, but to be fair, I believe the only reason "I Don't Care" was suggested rather than a superior song from her catalog was because it was a co-write with Campbell.

I would rather GDW be shortened than replaced. I think she believes everybody likes the lengthy "crackhead dance" and posturing but... not so much. A little goes a long way....

Imperial Hotel? OK, now I'm beginning to think folks are just teasing. No, I've always loved that song (about an assignation at the Sunset Marquis). But I suppose it's an artifact of its time. It has nothing more to do with today's Stevie than something-or-other.

How about Fall From Grace for an up-tempo blazing rock and roller? She did that a few years ago on an awards show, and she laid it down like a queen. Maybe Mike Campbell had something to do with that track?

Yeah I agree GDW shortened by cutting out the crackhead dance

I just listen to "I don't care" and honestly, that one is just so ridiculously bad, I can't even say that I don't care. What was everyone thinking during production? I would have laughed my ass off in the studio.

The music isn’t bad, so maybe they recorded without the vocals.

That whole dance is painful to watch. GDW has become beyond bloated and overdone. I don't mind the jam aspect of it but it's pretty much exactly the same every single night so calling it a jam is a bit of a stretch. I preferred the Dance era versions of that tune and I would say that The Dance DVD and Sheryl Crow in Central Park versions are my two favorite performances of GDW ever.

How about Fall From Grace for an up-tempo blazing rock and roller? She did that a few years ago on an awards show, and she laid it down like a queen. Maybe Mike Campbell had something to do with that track?

I love that version as well! She was on fire.

The only connection between that song and Mike Campbell is a thematic tie between his current actions and the title.

I guess the bottom line is that a lot of people feel Mick SUCKS! Now that would be appropriate, right?

Oh my god these lyrics what on earth was she thinking

Story I've heard is that the studio musicians kept playing and she was ad-libbing a lot of her words as she went. But it's definitely a song she could do some crackhead/headbanging moves to. I guess that's why I made a connection to GDW.

IA I thought he looked clean. But I know a lot of people just aren't into that super hairy look. Lindsey's always been super well groomed tbh save for the early 80s, where he kinda looked like a mess. He still looked good but just kinda messy.

Mick always looked like he was in need of a shower. And after hearing some of the stories about him, it's probably because he actually was.

Whitney: All hail nostalgia rock, the source of middle-aged mayhem

If you’re easily startled or around small children, be careful with what I’m about to tell you. My plan is to just put it all out there and deal with the consequences later.

So here goes: I’m buying tickets to see Fleetwood Mac at the Premier Center.

Hello? Are you still there?

I know what you’re thinking. This is a band that hasn’t put out a relevant album in 30 years and embarked on this tour without artistic leader Lindsey Buckingham. Tickets cost more than the asking price for Badlands Pawn and the main attraction is 70-year-old Stevie Nicks, who is a long way from the edge of seventeen.

But I’ll be there through the encores, just like I’ve dutifully attended concerts by Paul McCartney, Elton John, Paul Simon, the Eagles and Bob Seger since the Denny opened in 2014. I’ve traveled to other venues to see the Rolling Stones, Billy Joel, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead, to name a few.

This “nostalgia rock” genre is derided by self-appointed arbiters of musical purity, many of whom are friends or colleagues. They sneer at the cash grab from fading artists and the craven consumerism of middle-age attendees, who gleefully flood Facebook with stage-lit selfies.

(Full disclosure: Premier Center general manager Terry Torkildson scolded me on Twitter during the Eagles show for taking too many pictures.)

The purists absorb live music in darkened clubs with artisanal beer and a cover charge, watching emerging artists perform while nodding sagely at between-songs banter. To be quite honest, that was me once and it’s one of the coolest things in the world.

But life moves on. My children, willing to tolerate "Dad's music" in their youth, morphed into pop music maestros, sending my car’s soundtrack careening from “Won’t Get Fooled Again” to the Hits 1 rotation on Sirius XM.

“Doesn’t anyone play instruments anymore?” I’d ask rhetorically, in between the Weeknd singing something about the weekend. When my son wondered one day if Elvis Presley was a member of the Beatles, I started pondering all the wrong turns my life had taken.

Then I reached an epiphany: We should approach musical preferences the same as religion. If it makes you feel good and you’re not trying to force it on other people, rock on. It’s the overbearing spreading of one's gospel that makes things messy.

Music can’t unlock heaven, but it offers a stairway. It reawakens our youth, sparking flashes of recognition. As a Detroit native, the guitar intro to Seger’s “Night Moves” summons memories for me of high school mischief, a connection that might seem silly to those from a different sphere.

My wife and I chose the Beatles song “In My Life” as the first dance at our wedding reception. We wanted it for our church ceremony, but it was rejected because John Lennon refers to “all these friends and lovers” in a passage someone found immoral.

Every time we hear it, our eyes meet and we’re back in a Holiday Inn City Centre ballroom, encircled by well-wishers as we go for a twirl.

Sometimes the most enduring memories come from concerts themselves:

-- Standing 10 feet away from Mick Jagger as he shakes his hips on an auxiliary stage as the Stones slay Winnipeg’s Blue Bomber Stadium.

-- Seeing Jackson Browne grab his guitar to perform “Jamaica Say You Will” after I called out the request at the Washington Pavilion.

-- Walking among the human sprawl at Canterbury Park near Minneapolis for a double bill of Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, with a slightly confused Dylan botching the shared encore.

-- Soaking in the vibe at Soldier Field as the Grateful Dead take the stage at sunset, keeping everyone in their thrall until Chicago police in riot gear clear out the parking lot at midnight.

If these nods to nostalgia make me more dinosaur than Dinosaur Jr., I can live with that. Watching Elton John belt out “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters” in Sioux Falls was like a night at CBGB for me.

Besides, knowing and appreciating the history of rock music is part of the appeal.

Classic Rock 101 tells us how Yoko Ono’s presence fractured the Beatles’ “Let It Be” sessions; how the Stones infamously hired Hells Angels as security at Altamont and paid them in beer; how Dylan went electric at the Newport Jazz Festival; and how hard-drinking Who drummer Keith Moon drove his Lincoln Continental into a hotel swimming pool.

I’ll approach Fleetwood Mac with the same fascination (Mick Fleetwood hates Lindsey Buckingham! The song ‘Landslide’ is about drugs! Christine McVie has daddy issues!) as we await the band’s Oct. 24 appearance.

I’ll apologize to friends such as Jeff Zueger, who runs the White Wall Sessions, and Bob Keyes, former Argus Leader music critic, for my shameless adherence to the past.

But there’s only so much you can do, right? Time makes you bolder, even children get older, and I’m getting older too.
