View Full Version : Who was the first audition speculation

Just for fun, who do you think the other audition was and why? I’ll start with two.

Dave Grohl: Because he wants to be in every band he possibly can be in. And, he owns the Sound City mixing board.

Rob Thomas: Hey, if he could restore Willie’s faith in songwriting, who are Fleetwood Mac to not at least consider it? Plus, he knows Carlos Santana and the lyrics to “Never Going Back Again.”

There was already a thread about this here (http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showthread.php?t=57787), however I still say Steven Tyler, he's a good friend of both Mick and Stevie and a big fan of the band, including the pre-BuckinghamNicks formation; Aerosmith's live setlist have often included Rattlesnake Shake, Oh Well or Stop Messin Around and he's a pretty regular FM concert goer. He has an house in Maui as well and frequently hangs with Mick at his restaurant with members of the respective bands along too if they're present. In late March his partner threw a big surprise birthday party for him in his Maui house and invited both Mick and Stevie, so he may have already been there for a while.

I can’t believe that people would think Stevie Nicks would, after just successfully ousting Lindsey, allow way bigger star than herself in the band. Grohl and Steven may be smaller names than Fleetwood Mac but they are way bigger names than Stevie Nicks. Plus, Steven is a good friend of Mick primarily. She wants to be the boss, she doesn’t want Mick to be the boss. And Mick knows this, it seems pretty clear. That’s why he brought his friend Finn in, to make sure he still has enough power.

Tru dat!!!! She would NEVER allow another (bigger) star in. It's all about her now. We get it, $tevie Nick$.

And, Steven is likely to take something from her wardrobe and wear it better. Which would beg the question how many outlandish dresser can one AOR/mainstream band have?

He might have heard through the grapevine about it. Some of us knew before Billy said anything, so it’s certainly not unimaginable that someone simply told him about it.

Didn't they say in the CBS interview that they auditioned people ranging in age from 26 to 60? (Christine teased Neil that he barely made the cut age-wise) Somehow it sounded like several people were considered.

No. They listened to people, as in on a stereo. Only two auditioned.

So perhaps several people were considered (in recordings), but only two made the final cut for an audition. Incidentally, you mentioned that several of you knew the Lindsey issue was coming down the pipe before Billy leaked the news. I was curious which grapevine had that information before that. I'm always the last to know everything! ;)

Steve Tyler is a good shout. I recently read an article that suggests Steve Tyler auditioned for the AC/DC singing role that went to Axle Rose. That would suggest he's on the look out for a new band.

I'd still maintain Brian Johnson (ex-AC/DC) is the other person. I know he left AC/DC due to hearing problems but I get the sense he was ousted rather than leaving of his own accord. It seems as if he's undergone successful treatment recently. He was singing with Mick at his restaurant just a few days before Neil Finn played there with Mick.

Another shout could be Steve Miller. Didn't Mick do some sort of event with him recently?

I've read Steven also auditioned for a Led Zeppelin reunion years ago.
I've only seen this recently about Mick and Steve Miller but I don't know the occasion:

However I still mantain that Brian Johnson would have been a terrible choice, can you imagine him trying to harmonize with Stevie and Christine?

You're an interesting chap ... The Mac got themselves an elite songwriter/lead singer and an elite lead guitarist with Neil/Mike but few individuals could have taken Lindsey's spot and done it well. John Mayer is one of the few. The guy is a great guitarist, can sing, and can write. But hey I'm happy with Neil/Mike.

isn't John Mayer still touring with Dead & Company? i guess like Axl, y'all think since he's fronting one band already he may was well a few more?

John Mayer owns and plays Turner 1 btw, and there's that red carpet interview of Lindsey and Kristen from few years back where Lindsey says how he's looking forward to see his performance and that he's a fellow guitarist.

of course, the person who could really step in is Keith Urban, the guy who did a pretty perfect rendition of Second Hand News at MusiCares and who cites Lindsey as his big influence as a guitarist. but Keith would never do that to Lindsey (unlike his fellow bandmates!), plus he's got a new album out and fully booked tour starting about now.

I'm not sure why they would NOT audition Rick Vito, since he plays periodically with Mick's blues band side project. Perhaps Rick wasn't interested in travelling that highway again.

Why are you 100% certain it was Billy?

A lot of people knew about what was going on prior to Billy saying anything and there was nothing in his comments to suggest he had even been offered an audition. He seemed angry that he didn’t get to have the job he had for nearly a decade, but beyond that, I never got the impression he was even considered this time out.

IA. Billy's post really sounded as if he had only recently found out about the whole thing, hence why he was mad he wasn't brought in.
I would be surprised if they had 'auditioned' him. He's not famous at all and wouldn't have brought with him much of a fan base and it's not like people today really revere or even remember the BTM/Time lineup.

The only way these children are going to sell this line up is if someone with some cache is stepping in. It's not Billy. Maybe they gave him a little courtesy but the second the blooms grew on TP grave, MC got the call. Then, they had to find someone to sing.

Gary Louris (from The Jayhawks) would have been a great choice to replace Lindsey. And I would argue that John Mayer would have been a perfect replacement for Lindsey. Like Lindsey, John can write, produce, and play a mean guitar. I guess maturity isn't one of your traits although consistency is. I'm serious. I'd be happy to find a Fleetwood Mac fan forum that isn't focused on how Lindsey is a victim. If you know of one, please let me know.

I’ve never claimed Lindsey was the victim, just that what the band said wasn’t accurate. I’m down with the new lineup, but there’s enough out there that refutes what the band said was the reasoning for the split. I know enough about bands and specifically this one to know whatever they say publicly has many layers that we’ll never completely know.

But, try a Stevie Nicks forum.

I don’t know/care who that is. Never heard of him. I only saw Hot Dog Mayer.

You never heard of Gary Louris? All joking aside, you should check him out. He's a mega-talent songwriter, guitarist, producer who is the main guy in The Jayhawks. The Jayhawks had two several albums that were collaborations between him and Mark Olson with Gary the rock guy and Mark the folk guy. Gary Louris is very similar to Lindsey. Mark left the band in the 90's and Gary became the leader of the band and they've gone on to release four great Fleetwood Mac-like albums in Rainy Day Music, Smile, Sounds of Lies, and Paging Mr. Proust. All four are highly, highly recommended. They have another new one coming out next month (Back Roads and Abandoned Motels). Start with Rainy Day Music which is a near-perfect album similar to Rumours and then go to Sound of Lies (which is their Tusk) and then the rest. Enjoy!

Just say dude from Jayhawks. “A Break In The Clouds” an “Save It For A Rainy Day” are good Americana songs, but his lyrics leave a little to be desired (like “We stood outside the Chinese restaurant in the rain” which wasn’t exactly relevant to the rest of the lyrics of an otherwise great song).

Love the Jayhawks I still think Hollywood Town Hall and Tomorrow the Green Grass are their best.I don't really get the Fleetwood Mac vibe all that much though. For sure Gram Parsons tho..maybe that is why I like them so much.

I adore Hollywood Town Hall and Tomorrow The Green Grass (two of my favorite albums of the 90's) and agree that those two albums are dissimilar to Fleetwood Mac. Those are much more in the Neil Young style. However, the albums that followed are my favorites where Gary Louris became the leader of the band. Those albums steer towards the Fleetwood Mac/Eagles sound. Rainy Day Music is a masterpiece as is Sounds of Lies. Rainy Day Music could easily have been a Fleetwood Mac album. And the recent album Paging Mr. Proust was fantastic (check out the song "Quiet Corners & Empty Spaces" which sounds like Gary wrote it for Christine). Gary is such a great songwriter and guitarist. Few can match a melody to a lyric like Gary. Reminds me of Lindsey in that he plays to the song and never tries to show off. I've seen Gary in soundchecks and he's a monster guitar player. Stevie and Christine would sound so good with Gary.

Again, YOU speculated that…Richard Thompson were considered for the Lindsey's replacement

I mean, I seriously wish. Why would a brilliant acoustic guitarist/blazing non-blues electric guitarist who made an album and toured with the woman he was divorcing ever somehow be relevant to Fleetwood Mac?

Thanks. Please kindly point me towards a Fleetwood Mac fan forum that isn't obsessively focused on the alternative reality of Lindsey being victimized by the evil forces of Mick Fleetwood and Stevie Nicks.

People don't really use forums anymore, this is one of the exceptions (I don't know if there are even are any other FM forums) but I'm sure you will be perfectly happy with the discussion on various FM Facebook groups, Stevie Nicks Facebook groups, fanpages on Instagram and also twitter! The internet is a very big place filled with opinions, have fun!

I agree that most forums have moved to Facebook but many still exist on their own. Neil Finn and all things Finn have a fantastic fan forum that's still fairly active. Would be ideal if this forum were a true Fleetwood Mac forum instead of a Lindsey Buckingham forum but life is imperfect.

Get a grip. I’m sorry but I’ve been posting or lurking here for almost 20 years and I’ve never felt it was a LB forum vs FM. If anything over the years it was far more a Stevie forum than anything else. Maybe too many of us are simply appalled at what has transpired in 2018. I own about ten LB solo songs altogether (if that) but I’m sure you’d accuse me of being a LB Super fan hiding in a FM band forum. You’d be wrong. I am here because of the band - the five “fireflies.”

I'm a huge fan of Lindsey, but I'm somehow able to see that the breakup has responsibility on both sides of the fence. That point seems to elude most of the folks on this forum. Perhaps I'm less perturbed by the breakup because I was a fan many years before Lindsey/Stevie joined the band. There are more Fleetwood Mac albums without Lindsey than with Lindsey, so life goes on even if it's not the "classic" lineup.

You're really missing the point here. The user you're replying to was right in saying that this has never really been a "Lindsey forum" like you keep calling it. Few people are dumb enough to think Lindsey just did absolutely nothing. He obviously had some request or something he wanted that was causing some type of conflict. But the reason there are so many angry fans and so many fans who hold resentment against other band members for it is because this situation is appalling, especially at this point in their careers. For so many reasons. It is absolutely reasonable for even big Stevie fans to be upset with her (and there are many) because this just never would've happened if it was her. Everyone knows this and that's why so much of the discussion ends up being about Stevie or related to her. If she told them to cancel the entire tour they probably would've done so and there's really no question about that. She's done SO much in recent years to alter/delay/impact the band's activities and she's been allowed to. And Lindsey gets thrown out for it? When he's the one who's given the MOST time and effort into the band? You don't even have to LIKE Lindsey to acknowledge that fact. And it's especially appalling when there's ample to indicate that he was trying to work on a plan that would make things work. OF COURSE people are going to question the intentions of those like Stevie or Mick in this situation.
And if you don't care about what lineups are considered classic or not then fine, don't think about it with the word 'classic' in mind. Think about time. Those 5 people defined Fleetwood Mac for several decades. The other lineups that produced those other albums lasted a few years each. When you're Lindsey and have given several decades of your life filled with hard work to a band, it's hard to wrap your head around how they can throw you out because you wanted them to be flexible with you and then replace you and treat you as if you were just any other band member.
This is why people are mad. It's not about blame. It's about the fact that this should not have happened, the people still in the band should not have let this happen. It reflects badly on them that they did. You don't let one member do whatever the hell she wants and then kick another one out when he wants something, not after all this time. People called Don Henley and Glenn Frey assholes and horrible people for YEARS after they fired Don Felder, and Don Felder's role in the Eagles was never even close to what Lindsey's has been in Fleetwood Mac. People STILL call Don Henley a terrible person because of it. Of course people are going to be upset with Mick/Stevie, even John and Chris. It really makes them look terrible if you ask me, they're tarnishing their own legacy.

It's very possible (I would say likely) that there are lots of details that would make you much more sympathetic to the band's position.

And the problem with that is the fact that the band is already telling a story that Lindsey was insisting upon not wanting to tour for a year. In telling that story, they're already trying to make themselves look as sympathetic and innocent as possible, throwing Lindsey under the bus, making it seem as if he just didn't want to do this, he was trying to act like the boss and he left them with no choice. And Stevie furthering that by unnecessarily commenting that she's not the "boss" in the band (ignoring her own actions over the years). Also it's interesting that you're saying this now since you claimed several times that you had inner circle 'sources' who told you that is what it's about. And then there are people who also have reliable 'sources' who said that's not even true, and the reality is more sympathetic towards Lindsey. And then there's those who claimed this was about Stevie getting annoyed and issuing an ultimatum. And then there's Lindsey's wife claiming he got a 'raw deal'. And then there's the little facts from people like Rick Turner and Federico Poll and that video of Lindsey, suggesting that he was trying to work a plan out. This isn't 1987, in today's day and age things get out and info is spread. So while it is true that we'll probably never know every tiny detail, just about everything we do know seems to suggest this was Lindsey getting thrown out over some scheduling issue (or a possibly bitter Stevie Nicks) and frankly unless it comes out that Lindsey graffiti-ed Mick's and Stevie's houses while they were arguing, the odds of me somehow sympathizing with them are low. Bands are no stranger to conflicts, especially not this group which has dealt through probably hundreds of conflicts over the years, they've dealt through every single member at their absolute worst, they should've dealt with this instead of choosing the more convenient way out.

It is not at all accurate to say that this is a LB forum, you have only started posting here and you are unaware of the vast majority of FM fans here that are now appalled at this situation. Most members were either fans of all five fireflies together or specifically SN or CM, BuckMcVie fans. That has now changed as people feel an injustice has occurred. Just because you do not feel the same does not mean that you can call this forum unfairly biased.
Again I am a huge Finn fan I have been for probably 35 years, whilst I do not begrudge him for joining the band I am still so incredibly angry that this vacant role became available in the band in the first place. I don't want anybody trying to take Lindsey's place. I do not share your excitement for this chapter, Finn fan or not.

Again, mouse, to me personally, and I feel, many more here, there is a vast distinction between being FIRED ( with no plausible reason given) and someone perishing or quitting a band, which would leave a fan likely with more sympathetic notions for the remainder of the band, those latter two. The first one however, does NOT, for most fans

There, once again, lies the difference.
And the argument of scheduling holds NO water, considering Stevie of all people has for years made herself scarcely available without visible (to us fans) repercussion.

Truly, there lies the rub, hence so many of us siding with the sudden new underdog.

Lindsey's inner circle does believe he got a raw deal. I might feel the same way if he were my brother. And yes I do have two sources. One in Lindsey's production team and one in his management team who both told me that the band's story is what happened. The band planned this tour a year in advance. Lindsey decided that he wanted to do a solo tour alongside the Mac tour. The band said "no" and then Lindsey said he wanted to delay the Mac tour for a year and the band then fired him. That's what I've been told by two independent people close with Lindsey.

You may not like the reason, but the band had a reason to fire him. Lindsey agreed to a tour and the tour was scheduled and then Lindsey decided to delay the tour for a year. You may not like that but that appears to be what happened. As far as I know, Stevie never agreed to a tour and then backed out at the last minute.

You may not like it but it's not unreasonable for a band to fire a member who agreed to a tour a year in advance and then decides to back out and delay the tour for a year. I know that Lindsey's wife feels that this is a "raw deal" but perhaps Lindsey should have simply played the tour and then did his solo thing next summer. If Lindsey had done that, the band would still be together and all would be good.

It is unreasonable to fire a member for scheduling conflicts, when another member has prevented the band from touring and recording in the past, with no repercussions. Your argument that it only matters if the tour was already booked is academic at best. Stevie prevented the band from touring, so same net result.

It's pretty obvious the real reason is conflict between Stevie and Lindsey, considering their history, and the touring conflict is just an excuse.

The band should have bent over backwards to accommodate Lindsey, as they did with Stevie in the past.

Your view is shared by many. Others believe that it's not unreasonable for a band to fire a member who agrees to a tour and then backs out after everything is scheduled and booked. I can see the pro's and con's of the band rescheduling the tour vs. firing Lindsey. The simple solution, however, would have been Lindsey simply playing the tour which he had already agreed to do. It was Lindsey who created this drama by backing out of an already scheduled tour. He could have done his solo thing next summer and honored his commitment to playing the Fleetwood Mac tour. If Lindsey had done that, the band would still be together and all would be good.

Which is exactly what Stevie has done in the past. Made the band tour wait for her to finish her solo thing. And Mick was not too happy at the time.

So what you're saying is 2 sets of rules for Stevie and Lindsey? That's why people are upset. Not to mention, firing someone is a slap in the face. You don't fire a band member of 30+ years for such a stupid reason. Clearly someone wanted Lindsey out. I wonder who it was?

It isn't a "stupid reason" to fire a member who agrees to a six month tour and then backs out after everything is scheduled and booked. And I'm not aware of any time that Stevie agreed to a tour and then backed out after it was scheduled. It is very different if a member doesn't want to tour vs. a member agreeing to a tour and then backing out.

Actually Crowded House has had its share of losses over the years (Paul Hester's tragic death and Tim Finn abruptly quitting the band) and somehow the band has weathered on as strong as ever.

?????
They're worse than Fleetwood Mac. They've released 2 albums in the last 25 years and have barely existed as band
As strong as ever?????

Sugar Mouse....do your 'sources' mention that the uncompromising conflict between S and L has any part in LB's firing? Because so many other sources indicate this?
You also mention the tour was 'scheduled' and booked.....I debate that it was actually only planned

I'm pretty sure this forthcoming tour was pushed back to late 2018 by Stevie. I don't have any evidence to refer to but I'm damn sure they were originally due to tour in late 2017. That's when Chris said they'd 'signed on the dotted line' for.

Since the band reunited, Crowded House has released two studio albums in the last decade. But don't get me going on this as I'd love to see Neil be more active with Crowded House. He just doesn't have the time with all his other projects.

That's conjecture on your part. How do you know it was fully booked when they decided to fire Lindsey? Planned yes, just like it was planned in 2012. Mick's comments from the Playboy interview are very interesting in this context.

"But that is what she wants to do, and I respect that. In the past I’d not have taken no for an answer. I’d have persuaded Stevie or whoever needed persuading at the time to do the tour. But I’m not doing that this time or ever again, and there is nothing else to say about it. Stevie changed her program and changed her mind, and however willful anyone may be, this is what’s happening. Or not happening, rather. It’s quite simple: Stevie changed her mind. And you know what? That is our innate privilege as humans: Each of us has the right to change our mind.”

I'm sure the Stevie/Lindsey relationship hasn't been a good one of late. However, it's not unreasonable to fire someone who basically won't show up for work for a year.

I know I'm splitting hairs but its one album in the last decade and nothing for eight years.

Again, the band would still be together if Lindsey would have simply honored his commitment.

I always thought this too. After the OWTS tour they talked as if they would tour again at the end of 2017, giving them a 2 years break which is usually what they like. But Stevie took on her solo tour that ended up going long so then Lindsey and Chris decided to do BM in the time. I think that Lindsey would have started whatever solo thing he wanted during that time had it not been for Stevie refusing to do an album. He probably hoped he would be able to do his solo project in its own time and go out on the road with FM in support of a new album-- a totally separate album/tour was probably not something he was hoping for. But because that didn't work out so they did BM instead that took up some of that time he could've used.

**She also delayed the 2013 tour, which was supposed to start in 2012 (actually was supposed to start in 2011 but Mick agreed to give S&L that year for their solo projects, Lindsey took it and was ready to go with FM as scheduled but Stevie later decided that she wasn't finished promoting her album so she told them no). The whole debacle was pretty dramatic and well documented.

At first you claimed your 'sources' were a part of the BAND's inner circle but oh well...
And either way that is a raw deal lol. Someone trying to make things work and then shutting him down, then they offer another option that could make things work and then they fire him? Independently of the whole history of Fleetwood Mac and Lindsey, that's a raw deal. I don't know how anyone can look at it and think anything else. When you factor in the history of Lindsey with the band and compare it to that of people like Stevie, it becomes even worse.

Was the entire tour scheduled and booked when Stevie backed out?

No idea. I posted a clip on here of Stevie talking about it, if I can find it again I'll add the link. She basically said that Fleetwood Mac agreed to tour in 2013 so she and Lindsey would have 2012 to promote/tour their solo albums. Then Stevie decided at some point that she wasn't ready to give up on her solo album yet so she told them "sorry you guys but I'm not touring, I need more time for my album" and she said they were very upset and unhappy etc.
Then Mick had an interview in Playboy that was extremely dramatic where he was crying that his band is dead, they were supposed to tour but Stevie is "obsessed" with her album, they're probably never gonna tour again, etc etc very dramatic.
I don't know the little details of when she decided she wasn't gonna tour/if they had booked yet but that was the situation-- they agreed to tour, she later backed out, it was highly dramatic.
