Lindsey Buckingham spoke about his firing from Fleetwood Mac for the first time when the guitarist performed Friday night at a California campaign fundraiser.
"It's been an interesting time on a lot of levels," Buckingham said at the fundraiser supporting Democratic congressional candidate Mike Levin (via Jeremy Roberts).
"For me, personally, probably some of you know that for the last three months I have sadly taken leave of my band of 43 years, Fleetwood Mac. This was not something that was really my doing or my choice."
"I think what you would say is that there were factions within the band that had lost their perspective," Buckingham continued. "The point is that they'd lost their perspective. What that did was to harm – and this is the only thing I'm really sad about, the rest of it becomes an opportunity – it harmed the 43-year legacy that we had worked so hard to build, and that legacy was really about rising above difficulties in order to fulfill one's higher truth and one's higher destiny."
Buckingham, who weaved his remarks about the Fleetwood Mac firing into a speech supporting Levin, remained diplomatic about the rift with his now-former bandmates, even sidestepping an audience member who yelled "**** Stevie Nicks."
The brief comments were Buckingham's first on the matter since Fleetwood Mac announced in April that the band recruited the Heartbreakers' Mike Campbell and Crowded House's Neil Finn to replace Buckingham, who reportedly didn't want to embark on a Mac tour this year.
"Words like 'fired' are ugly references as far as I'm concerned," Mick Fleetwood told Rolling Stone in April. "Not to hedge around, but we arrived at the impasse of hitting a brick wall. This was not a happy situation for us in terms of the logistics of a functioning band. To that purpose, we made a decision that we could not go on with him. Majority rules in term of what we need to do as a band and go forward."

Lindsey Buckingham Says He's Been Thrown Out of Fleetwood Mac
Lindsey Buckingham is no longer a part of the band he founded ... and it was not his choice.
Lindsey was performing Friday night at an L.A. backyard fundraiser for California Congressman Mike Levin, when he told the crowd he has not been a part of Fleetwood Mac for 3 months. He made it clear it was not his doing ... he was unceremoniously kicked out by a band member or members.
Lindsey didn't say who was behind the overthrow, but judging from the video it sure seems it was Stevie Nicks.
Buckingham seemed sad, saying the members behind the ouster were tarnishing the group's 43-year legacy.
The group has had a storied history of discord ... discord that in many ways made their songs and performances amazing.

Buckingham: “It harmed the 43-year legacy that we had worked so hard to build”

Last month, Fleetwood Mac parted ways with longtime guitarist Lindsey Buckingham. Buckingham addressed the firing publicly for the first time last night while performing at a campaign fundraiser for California Democratic congressional candidate Mike Levin. “This was not something that was really my doing or my choice,” he said in between songs. “I think what you would say is that there were factions within the band that had lost their perspective.”
He continued, claiming the decision negatively affects Fleetwood Mac. “It harmed the 43-year legacy that we had worked so hard to build, and that legacy was really about rising above difficulties in order to fulfill one’s higher truth and one’s high destiny.” Watch his full speech below.
Stevie Nicks recently discussed the decision to replace Buckingham with former Tom Petty guitarist Mike Campbell and Crowded House’s Neil Finn on Fleetwood Mac’s upcoming tour. “Our relationship has always been volatile,” Nicks said. “This is sad for me, but I want the next 10 years of my life to be really fun and happy.” Mick Fleetwood added: “Majority rules in terms of what we need to do as a band and go forward.”

Lindsey Buckingham has finally spoken about his departure from Fleetwood Mac. Last night, he performed at a fundraiser for Mike Levin, a Democratic candidate for California's 49th Congressional District, where he made his first public comments about the band's decision to tour without him, which you can see below.
The video, found by Medium, begins with Buckingham saying, "It’s been an interesting time on a lot of levels. For me, personally, probably some of you know that for the last three months I have sadly taken leave of my band of 43 years, Fleetwood Mac. This was not something that was really my doing or my choice. I think what you would say is that there were factions within the band that had lost their perspective."

After someone in the crowd shouted, "**** Stevie Nicks," Buckingham diplomatically raised his hand and refused to point a finger of blame. "Well, it doesn’t really matter," he continued. "The point is that they'd lost their perspective, and what that did was to harm – and this is the only thing I'm really sad about; the rest of it becomes an opportunity – it harmed the 43-year legacy that we had worked so hard to build, and that legacy was really about rising above difficulties in order to fulfill one's higher truth and one's higher destiny."

He then pivoted into the reason why he was playing a political fundraiser, citing a similar loss of perspective in Washington with regard to checks and balances. The seat in the U.S. House of Representatives is up for grabs, with Republican Darrell Issa, who has held the seat since 2000, stepping down.
Buckingham, who left the band after 1987's Tango in the Night and rejoined 10 years later, has been replaced by Mike Campbell from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Neil Finn of Crowded House for their upcoming tour. Nicks said that the decision to move on without him was the result of him wanting to wait until next year to go on the road.
Fleetwood Mac's tour begins Oct. 3 at the BOK Center in Tulsa and will continue, over two legs with a six-week break in mid-December and January, through April 5 in Philadelphia. You can check out all the dates here.

Lindsey Buckingham Breaks Silence on Fleetwood Mac Firing: ''They Lost Their Perspective''
by MEG SWERTLOW | Sat., May. 12, 2018 11:58 AM
Lindsey Buckingham is breaking his silence on the matter of his exit from Fleetwood Mac.
Buckingham confirmed on stage that leaving the band of 43 years was not his "choice" just over one month after Rolling Stone reported that the rocker had been "fired" due to a disagreement over an upcoming tour and replaced by Mike Campbell of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and Neil Finn of Crowded House.
While the band has done some talking on the subject, Lindsey has kept mum—until now.
"It's been an interesting time on a lot of levels for me personally. Probably some of you know, that for the last three months I have taken leave of my band of 43 years, Fleetwood Mac. This was not something that was my doing or my choice," said the guitarist and singer.
He continued, "I think what you would say there were factions that were in the band that had lost their perspective."
An audience member yelled out, "Stevie Nicks!"
Buckingham responded, "It doesn't really matter. The point is that they lost their perspective...and what that did was to harm—and this is the one thing I am really sad about because the rest of it becomes an opportunity—it harmed the 43-year legacy that we worked so hard to build. And that legacy was really about rising above difficulties in order to fulfill someone's higher truth and one's higher destiny."

Fleetwood Mac is not into growing musically or really even making new music. They only stayed together for 5 albums in the 70s and 80s. Once Stevie became a star she expected everyone else to turn one of her rhymes into a hit. She quit perfecting things. Lindsey was the only person in the band who wanted to push things musically.

Lindsey Buckingham shatters silence over Fleetwood Mac ousting

Retro pop culture interviews and elusive love feelings sustain this University of Georgia Master of Agricultural Leadership alum.

“There were factions within the band that had lost their perspective…what that did was to harm the 43-year legacy that we had worked so hard to build.” For the first time, Fleetwood Mac guitar slinger Lindsey Buckingham publicly addresses why he was fired from the diamond-certified ’70s pop rock quintet. Dressed casually in blue jeans, a black T-shirt, and cool black leather jacket in the accompanying still, a sweat-soaked Buckingham screams in ecstasy after soloing on a customized Rick Turner Renaissance guitar. Thirty-seven days after a tweet by late ’80s Fleetwood Mac guitarist Billy Burnette ironically divulged that the guy he replaced in the rock quintet, Lindsey Buckingham, had been unceremoniously fired at the insistence of Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood, the idiosyncratic Rumours mastermind finally broke his silence over the shocking revelation.
Not seen in public since January 26 when Fleetwood Mac was bestowed MusiCares Person of the Year by the Recording Academy, Buckingham was videoed Friday evening in between songs at a campaign fundraiser supporting Mike Levin, an environmental attorney and Democratic candidate seeking election to the U.S. House to represent the 49th Congressional District of California.
“It’s been an interesting time on a lot of levels,” said Buckingham from the Los Feliz, California, backyard of fellow Levin donor Erica Rothschild. “For me, personally, probably some of you know that for the last three months I have sadly taken leave of my band of 43 years, Fleetwood Mac. This was not something that was really my doing or my choice.
“I think what you would say is that there were factions within the band that had lost their perspective [a female fan shouts, ‘F — k Stevie Nicks!,’ prompting Buckingham to raise his hand]. Well, it doesn’t really matter. The point is that they’d lost their perspective. What that did was to harm — and this is the only thing I’m really sad about, the rest of it becomes an opportunity — it harmed the 43-year legacy that we had worked so hard to build [another admirer chimes in, ‘That you built, Lindsey’]. That legacy was really about rising above difficulties in order to fulfill one’s higher truth and one’s higher destiny.”
Adroitly drawing a parallel as to why the blue state constituents were in attendance, Buckingham continued, “Now, we also are at a point with our country in Washington where there’s been a loss of perspective. Mr. Dean [John W. Dean, President Richard Nixon’s White House Counsel and Watergate star witness who spoke earlier at the fundraiser] saw it first-hand 45 years ago. I think the difference was that perhaps there were more separations of powers. There was more potential for checks and balances in that loss of perspective. The loss of perspective we see now is indeed threatening to harm the legacy that is the United States.
“In the context of that you’ve gotta think of what needs to be done. It is not gonna come from the top down — it is gonna come from the ground up. This is why we are here. And so, I am most honored and most pleased to have been asked in my own small way to help in that pushback which very, very much needs to happen in order to continue the legacy that we all have come to value. So, thank you for having me.”
Fleetwood Mac replaced Buckingham with two ingenious choices — Australian rock band Crowded House singer-guitarist Neil Finn and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers chief axeman Mike Campbell, whose frequent studio and stage collaborations with Nicks extend to her debut solo single “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” in 1981. The diamond-certified pop rockers are scheduled to begin a prodigious 52-date North American arena tour on October 3 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which apparently precipitated the split.
On a CBS This Morning April 25 profile moderated by Anthony Mason, the jilted “Landslide” chanteuse was not sorry to part ways with her former paramour. “This team wanted to get out on the road, and one of the members didn’t want to go out on the road for a year,” said Nicks, who was the only Fleetwood Mac member not to join the sessions for last year’s acclaimed Buckingham McVie record. “We just couldn’t agree. When you’re in a band, it’s a team. I have a solo career. I love my solo career, and I’m the boss. But I’m not the boss in this band.”
Fleetwood, the groove-laden drummer and co-founder, seconded the most recognizable group member and only one capable of packing arenas to Rolling Stone’s Andy Greene. “Not to hedge around, but we arrived at the impasse of hitting a brick wall,” admitted Fleetwood. “This was not a happy situation for us in terms of the logistics of a functioning band. To that purpose, we made a decision that we could not go on with him. Majority rules in term of what we need to do as a band and go forward.” Singer-songwriter-keyboardist Christine McVie was at home in London and not told until after the majority vote had been cast.
A fan encounter filmed the day after the MusiCares gala and a few days before Buckingham’s sacking found the multifaceted musician explaining that he wanted to plot solo “small machine” dates in between Fleetwood Mac’s upcoming “big machine” trek. There’s obviously much more to the obfuscating soap opera. Until Buckingham decides to shed further light, his diplomatic, classy rebuttal will have to suffice heartbroken fans.

Lindsey Buckingham On Why He Was Nixed from Fleetwood Mac: “There were factions in the band that had lost their perspective”
by Roger Friedman - May 12, 2018 3:11 pm
Lindsay Buckingham has addressed his ouster from Fleetwood Mac. He was fired, it wasn’t a matter of scheduling (we knew that, didn’t we?).
Was it his long time partner Stevie Nicks who nixed him? Someone yells her name at a backyard show where Buckingham was playing. He responds by saying, “It doesn’t matter.”
Well, it does matter. Fleetwood Mac told Lindsey ‘You can go your own way’ after 43 years. That’s not very nice. They replaced him with Neil Finn from Crowded House and Mike Campbell of Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers, but that’s not Fleetwood Mac, jack.

Mick Fleetwood added: “Majority rules in terms of what we need to do as a band and go forward.”
I've tried, but nothing make sense. Majority out of the 5? So, Mick, Stevie and who was the third? John? Christine, who claims she wasn't part of the ouster?
This is so disappointing that either of the McVies went along with this. :distress:

Lindsey Buckingham: Mac ‘Lost Their Perspective’
by Best Classic Bands Staff
Nicks and Buckingham in happier times
Lindsey Buckingham spoke out publicly for the first time about his departure from “my band for 43 years.” The now-former Fleetwood Mac member performed Friday night (May 11) at a fundraiser for California Congressman Mike Levin.
“This has been an interesting time on a lot of levels for me, personally,” he said. “Probably some of you know that, for the last three months, I have sadly taken leave of my band for 43 years, Fleetwood Mac. This was not something that was either my doing or my choice. I think what you would say was that there were factions within the band that had lost their perspective.”
As he paused, an audience member shouted: “F*ck Stevie Nicks.” Was his former lover and longtime band mate the main culprit? Buckingham clearly heard it, acknowledging: “Well, it doesn’t really matter. The point is that they’ve lost their perspective and what that did was to harm… and this is the only thing I’m really sad about it… the rest of it becomes an opportunity… but it harmed the 43 year legacy that we built. And that legacy was really about rising above difficulties in order to fulfill one’s higher truth and one’s higher destiny.”

He then turned political. “Now we’re also at a point with our country in Washington… where there’s been a loss of perspective. Mr. Dean saw it first-hand 45 years ago,” he said, referring to the Nixon White House Counsel. “I think the difference was that perhaps there were more separation of powers… more potential for checks and balances.
“But the loss of perspective we see now is, indeed, threatening to harm the legacy that is the United States. In the context of that you’ve got to think of what needs to be done. And it is not gonna come from the top down… it is gonna come from the ground up and this is why we are here. I am most honored and most pleased to have been asked, in my own small way, to help in that push back which very, very much needs to happen in order to continue the legacy we have all come to value.”

I've tried, but nothing make sense. Majority out of the 5? So, Mick, Stevie and who was the third? John? Christine, who claims she wasn't part of the ouster?
This is so disappointing that either of the McVies went along with this. :distress:
Probably a snowball effect - the catalyst being Stevie, with Mick just "following the money", then John and Christine probably sticking with Mick out of loyalty. Very disappointed as well that they did not recognize that this is a pretty sh!tty way for the band to end its run. :(

After hearing LBs classy comments, I wonder if he gave Christine his blessing to stay, as to not rock the boat too much, keeping open a likelihood of reunion. If she bolted too, it really might’ve been the end for good.

Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham Goes His Own Way (Again): A Timeline
Written By Stephen Thomas Erlewine April 10 2018, 5:46 PM ET
Just three years ago, when Fleetwood Mac was awash in good vibes after the return of Christine McVie, MOJO Magazine asked Mick Fleetwood if it was the classic lineup or nothing. The drummer, who has anchored the British band with bassist John McVie since 1967, responded: “This is it, to me. Emotionally, if you think of the enormity of what has happened, the surprise of what has happened, the doors that have opened to be walked through…if you were writing a book, you’d go, ‘Isn’t it a shame I can’t end it like this?’ We’ve had the chance to end it like that and I wouldn’t dream of it any other way.”
Dreams never last. It was only a matter of time before Fleetwood’s rosy summary of the future of rock’s most mercurial band shattered, and April 9, 2018 brought the news. Lindsey Buckingham–the guitarist/singer/producer/songwriter who sat at the foundation of Fleetwood Mac since 1975–would not joining the band on its farewell tour later this year. Shortly after the story broke in Variety, it was reported by Rolling Stone that Buckingham was fired over disagreements concerning this tour.
Details remain sketchy but as its surprise reveal fades, Buckingham’s departure seems like the inevitable end to his time in Fleetwood Mac. After all, the group had eight guitarists before he joined and, with this year’s addition of Crowded House’s Neil Finn and Mike Campbell of Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers, there have been six other members that have played with the group once Lindsey left them high and dry. Buckingham may have played a pivotal part of Fleetwood Mac’s story but it was only a part–one that was fraught with so much creative tension, it’s a wonder either of his tenures lasted as long as they did. Here we’ve created a brief history of Buckingham’s time with the band.
***
1973: As Fleetwood Mac release Mystery To Me, their fifth album to feature Christine McVie and guitarist Bob Welch, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks debut with Buckingham Nicks, a sweet, hazy collection of folky Southern Californian soft-rock produced by Ken Olsen. Buckingham Nicks sinks without a trace, leaving the duo nearly destitute and looking for a break.
1974: Fleetwood Mac begins the year battling a former manager who launched a competing band with by the same name, alongside members of a group called Legs, and ends it with Bob Welch quitting the band on the eve of recording an album. Desperate to replace his guitarist, Mick Fleetwood remembers Ken Olsen playing him “Frozen Love,” a song from Buckingham Nicks, earlier that year, so he offers Buckingham the gig without an audition. Lindsey insists that his partner Stevie join as well–a magnanimous gesture, to be sure, but also the first sign he’ll put his own creative interests first.
1975: Despite the reservations of John McVie–“we’re a blues band, this is really far away from the blues,” Olsen recounted–Fleetwood Mac decided to follow the direction of Buckingham and Nicks and refashion themselves on their eponymous 1975 album.
1976: As Fleetwood Mac climbs the charts in the early months of 1976, Rolling Stone reveals in an April 22, 1976 news item that Buckingham and Nicks are the second couple in Fleetwood Mac to be hitting “choppy waters.” This marks the first airing of the interpersonal strife within the band and it’s a double reveal, divulging the divorce of the McVies as well. With all their dirty laundry going public, the group embarks on the stress-filled recording of a new album, which they would call Rumours after all the gossip in the press.
1977: Released in February, Rumours elevates the band to superstardom. The album stays at the top of the Billboard charts for 33 weeks, generating the Top 10 hits “Go Your Own Way,” “Dreams,” “Don’t Stop,” and “You Make Loving Fun.”
1978: Riding high on Rumours, Buckingham and Nicks experience a detente in their personal relationship as they co-produce Walter Egan’s Fundamental Roll, which features the yacht rock standard “Magnet and Steel.” (Nicks would also sing harmonies on “Gold,” a hit Buckingham produced for John Stewart in 1979).
1979: Heading into the studio to record the sequel to Rumours, Lindsey Buckingham was insisting that the Mac make an album that turned their 1977 blockbuster on its head. Christine McVie would tell Creem, “I think if we hadn’t done that album, then Lindsey might’ve left,” but that doesn’t mean the sessions were easy. Nicks recounted in the liner notes to the 2015 reissue of Tusk–the resulting double-LP released at the end of 1979–that Buckingham was so adamant to do something the opposite of previous record “that I think he scared us.”
1980: Despite two Top 10 hits in “Tusk” and “Sara,” Tusk didn’t replicate the success of Rumours, and tensions began to bubble over onto the stage. During the final gig for the supporting tour for Tusk, Buckingham announced “This is our last concert….for a long time,” sparking chatter that the band was about to split.
1981: Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood all release solo albums, with Lindsey’s restless Law And Order and its accompanying Top 10 hit “Trouble” overshadowed by Stevie’s Bella Donna, which produced three hits in “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” “Leather and Lace” and “Edge of Seventeen.”
1982: Fleetwood Mac decides to reunite for a new album but, according to Buckingham, they tell the guitarist “we’re not going do that process anymore”–so he swallows his pride and the group makes the cozy, lovely Mirage.
1983: While Mirage floats down the charts, Lindsey Buckingham contributes the nervy “I Want You Back” to I’m Not Me, an album by Mick Fleetwood’s Zoo. (A move that suggests everything is operating smoothly behind the scenes.) Meanwhile, Nicks’s solo career flourishes with The Wild Heart and its hit “Stand Back”.
1984-1986: Upon the 1984 release of his solo set Go Insane, Lindsey Buckingham told Rolling Stone “I’m trying to break down preconceptions of what pop music is” and, like most pioneers, he didn’t see much commercial success for his endeavors. This was the beginning of a rough patch for the Fleetwood Mac universe. Ten years on from their pop reinvention, the group were scattered and working on solo projects. Buckingham in particular was dedicated to his studio work, but he slowly came back aboard. After aborted sessions with Nile Rogers, Buckingham and his co-producer Richard Dashut agreed to helm the new record, which was largely made while Nicks was on a solo tour.
1987: Tango In The Night is released in April of 1987 but, by August, the band splinters over the fact that Buckingham didn’t want to tour the record. He split and is replaced by Billy Burnett—who had previously played with Zoo–and Rick Vito. The new set of performers immediately head out on tour
1990: Fleetwood Mac take a stab at recording a new album with Burnett and Vito but Behind the Mask underperforms, going Gold in the US on sheer name recognition. Meanwhile, Buckingham toils away on his third solo album.
1991-1995: In 1992, Buckingham finally releases Out of the Cradle, but it went no further than a disappointing 128 on Billboard’s charts. His former bandmates aren’t faring much better. Nicks leaves Fleetwood Mac in 1993, and the group soldiers through with Bekka Bramlett and Dave Mason. This lineup produces Time, a 1995 set that is their first album since 1968 to not chart in the US, and Mick Fleetwood announces the group was breaking up.
1996-1998:
The classic ’70s lineup of Fleetwood Mac begins to mend bridges in 1996, with Fleetwood coming in to drum on a Buckingham solo project that would quickly feature John McVie. Elsewhere, Nicks reaches out to Buckingham to produce and sing on her contribution to the Twister soundtrack. By 1997, the Buckingham project morphs into new studio sessions that supplement the live reunion album The Dance, which kicks off a tour that stretches into 1998. Upon its conclusion, Christine McVie leaves the group.
1999-2008: Right after Christine’s departure, Fleetwood Mac stays quiet. They resurface in 2003 with Say You Will, an album consisting entirely of originals written separately by Nicks and Buckingham. Christine McVie does appear on the album, but these are tracks that were originally planned for a Lindsey solo album from the ’90s. Following its release, the band pursue solo projects, with Buckingham swiftly releasing Under The Skin in 2006 and Gift Of Screws in 2008.
2009-2013: Without Christine, the remaining core four reunite for a tour called Unleashed in 2009, but once again both Nicks and Buckingham choose to concentrate on solo albums, not new Fleetwood Mac recordings. This makes the 2013 appearance a surprise: the four-track
Extended Play–the first Mac music in a decade–snuck out without fanfare (or much of a title) but it as the first indication the group is attempting to do something more than play the old tunes. (This wouldn’t last long.)
2014-2015: Christine McVie rejoins the band for a reunion tour dubbed On With The Show. There are rumblings that new recordings would accompany the tour, but Nicks never signs on for a new album, so the band spends two years touring the world.
2016-2017: With Stevie Nicks reluctant to record a new album, Buckingham and Christine McVie decide to finish their own material–including a song called “On With The Show,” which was intended to be the anthem for the mid-2010s tour–much of which is recorded with the rhythm section of Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. The resulting Buckingham McVie appears in June 2017, followed by a tour from the duo. Everything seems fine within the Fleetwood Mac camp as they approach a farewell tour.
Which brings us to now: The plans for the 2018 tour swiftly collapsed after the group accepted the award for MusicCares Person of the Year in January. Not long afterward, something went wrong within the group. The first indication of something possibly being wrong is when Billy Burnette tweeted that “Lindsey Buckingham is out but I’m not in” on April 4–he swiftly deleted the Tweet, but the story was out in the world. Not a week later, Buckingham’s departure was announced simultaneously with the hire of Crowded House’s Neil Finn and Mike Campbell of the Heartbreakers–two heavy-hitters that are guaranteed to help ease the pain of Lindsey’s dismissal.
Whether the Finn and Campbell-infused edition of Fleetwood Mac flourishes or fails, one thing can be certain: it’s almost truer to the band for them to open up a messy new chapter. A tidy ending isn’t one suited for a story as operatic as Fleetwood Mac.

Just over a month after Fleetwood Mac announced Lindsey Buckingham would not be joining the group on its upcoming tour, the guitarist and singer has addressed parting ways with his bandmates.
"I have sadly taken leave of my band of 43 years, Fleetwood Mac. This was not something that was really my doing or my choice,” Buckingham, said during a performance in Los Feliz, Calif., Friday night (May 11). “I think what you would say is that there were factions within the band that had lost their perspective.”
“It harmed the 43-year legacy that we had worked so hard to build," he said of the group's decision, "and that legacy was really about rising above difficulties in order to fulfill one’s higher truth and one’s higher destiny.”
He refrained from commenting when one audience member yelled "**** Stevie Nicks."

5 Lingering Questions From Fleetwood Mac's Split With Lindsey Buckingham
Buckingham was performing at a campaign fundraiser for Mike Levin, a California Democratic congressional candidate.
On April 9, Fleetwood Mac issued a statement that simply said, "Lindsey Buckingham will not be performing with the band on this tour. The band wishes Lindsey all the best." it was also revealed that he would be replaced by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Mike Campbell and Crowded House's Neil Finn on tour.
The remaining members of the band -- Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood -- later said the split happened because of conflicts with tour rehearsal schedules, but were reluctant to use the word "fired." “Not to hedge around, but we arrived at the impasse of hitting a brick wall," Fleetwood told Rolling Stone. "This was not a happy situation for us in terms of the logistics of a functioning band. To that purpose, we made a decision that we could not go on with him. Majority rules in term of what we need to do as a band and go forward.”

Lindsey Buckingham Discusses His Departure From Fleetwood Mac

Last month, Fleetwood Mac announced an upcoming US tour, and with it that they’d finally be parting ways with longtime guitarist and songwriter Lindsey Buckingham. In conversation with Rolling Stone, the band said that the decision was in response to Buckingham’s objections to the band’s upcoming tour schedule, and that his firing came down to a sort of “majority rules” decision. At the time, Buckingham declined to comment.
But in a performance last night at a campaign fundraiser for California Democratic congressional candidate Mike Levin, Buckingham finally broke his silence on his recent departure from the band. “This was not something that was really my doing or my choice,” he said on stage between songs. “I think what you would say is that there were factions within the band that had lost their perspective.”
Buckingham also added that his firing has negatively affected the band’s career-spanning legacy together. “It harmed the 43-year legacy that we had worked so hard to build, and that legacy was really about rising above difficulties in order to fulfill one’s higher truth and one’s high destiny,” he said. Watch a clip of his remarks below.

In a polite but pointed way, Lindsey is saying exactly what should be said: the band has tarnished its legacy for the sake of a quick buck.
Some factions within the band lost their perspective indeed.
His phrasing suggests Christine was not culpable, but it's hard to square that with her enthusiastic (though obviously canned) comments about the new lineup on the CBS show.
I really do hope they do a Buckingham/McVie II.

While I don’t think Chris played an active role, I don’t think it’s fair to say she’s 100% LB on this. More likely she was positioned more in the middle, but has LB confident she didn’t play a part in the ouster. I bet he doesn’t even blame John, Johns not going to go against Mick at the end of the day, and he knows that.

How can she be 100% Lindsey? She's still in the band. Obviously she agrees with what happened, at least to the extent that she still wants to be around "the backstabbers"(I use that term loosely). I'm thinking Lindsey at least gives credit to Christine for wanting to keep the creative aspect of the band continuing by writing new songs and wanting to make a new FM record. This perspective is where Stevie differed from the rest of the band, at least in the context of making new music with Lindsey.

Why can’t she have loyalties to both Lindsey and the others? She can disagree with the decision but still stay in the band. Does everything have to be black and white?

Lindsey Buckingham Says He Was Pushed Out of Fleetwood Mac But Thinks of It As a "Leave"
12:14 AM -News-, Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey Buckingham
by Paul Cashmere, Noise11
Lindsey Buckingham has spoken about his departure from Fleetwood Mac for the first time calling it “leave” rather than being fired although he also said that he didn’t walk, he was pushed.
Buckingham, a staunch Democrat, was appearing at a fundraiser for California congress candidate Mike Levin on Friday night when he told the audience. “It’s been an interesting time on a lot of levels. For me, personally, probably some of you know that for the last three months I have sadly taken leave of my band of 43 years, Fleetwood Mac. This was not something that was really my doing or my choice.”
Buckingham said that the band has lost its way. “I think what you would say is that there were factions within the band that had lost their perspective,” he said. “The point is that they’d lost their perspective. What that did was to harm – and this is the only I’m really sad about, the rest of it becomes an opportunity – it harmed the 43-year legacy that we had worked so hard to build, and that legacy was really about rising above difficulties in order to fulfil one’s higher truth and one’s higher destiny.”
Lindsey was replaced by two new members, Neil Finn of Split Enz and Crowded House fame and Mike Campbell from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.
In 2015 he was adamant that the current Fleetwood Mac tour would be the final Fleetwood Mac tour but then the rest of the band decided to lap the planet one more time.
Buckingham’s “taken leave” comment suggests that at some time in the future he will be back. However age is not on his side for that. Mick Fleetwood is now 70, John McVie is 72, Christine McVie is 74 and Stevie Nicks is 69.
I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree. Life isn’t that black and white.

Unless Stevie fails to live up to her prediction that she will live into the triple digits and suddenly croaks( and no I'm not referring to her current vocal range) then I think Lindsey will never be invited back into Fleetwood Mac.

Well when he first left after Tango (and this was much closer to the worst times in their history) she was jumping with joy then flash forward a couple of years and she's crying that their relationship is dead and that he no longer speaks to her. So honestly anything is possible, especially with someone like Stevie who changes her mind a lot and is naturally dramatic (I also believe she's not been in a normal headspace since TP died). But it's true that their age isn't helping.

I just feel sorry for Lindsey. Creativity is like a river. You have to let it flow to grow. Some band members just didn’t care about the artistry anymore. They stopped the flow. They fell into formula. Lindsey needs to find another group of people who actually care about creativity. This group is really done and has been since the 1980s.

On this we agree 100 percent. LB wanted FM to be creative. You know who just wanted to tour and get adulation and cash. I think if LB wasn't so great to be around the last year or so, THAT was the reason why. He does NOT want to be just an oldies act.

Yeah unless they were bringing back Peter Green himself Fleetwood Mac should have disbanded at the moment that they decided to fire one of the five.To carry on now as is is an unfunny joke.
As someone said in a different thread, following this logic, FM should have broken up when Bob Welch left the band... and if that had happened, we wouldn't be having this discussion because Lindsey and Stevie wouldn't have had the opportunity to join. And you even say yourself, "unless they were bringing back Peter Green himself," which implies you would have accepted his return to replace Lindsey.
Before, I would have agreed with you about their legacy possibly being tarnished. However, a FM tour consisting of Mick, John, Dave Mason, Billy Burnette, and Bekka Bramlett is much different than a FM lineup consisting of Mick, John, Christine, Stevie, Mike Campbell, and Neil Finn. Especially with Mike Campbell, right there with Christine and Stevie.
Is it unfortunate? YES! But this lineup tarnishing their legacy? Don't see it.

I agree with this--if anyone doubts or was on the fence about that....I offer up her Musicares speech. That said, and I don't mean to sound morbid, but I would hate to think of her "headspace" if g-d forbid, something happened to Lindsey before she can patch things up with him.

I agree that Mike and Neil are superior replacements to Rick and Billy but this time they have fired one of their own and so late in the game .It is preposterous to think that this new lineup will result in a change in fortunes like the 1975 band .The remaining 4 are all in their 70s ! . Fleetwood Mac was Peter Green's band. It was even called Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac and he was also the member in the entire history of the band with the most raw talent.

However, that doesn't mean their legacy will be tarnished just because they will never have another #1 album of new material. Even with Lindsey, the band would never have had successes like they had in their prime. Radio won't play a new FM song no matter who is in the band.
Again, using the logic that the band should have gone out on top, then the Dance should have been the last we ever saw of Fleetwood Mac, when Christine left. Instead, Mick, John, Lindsey, and Stevie soldiered on and toured several more times and recorded twice without Christine- did that tarnish their legacy? No. I know you're going to respond by saying "but they fired Lindsey," but objectively speaking, it doesn't matter. If there is a problem, the band has the right to fire someone. Just like if there is a problem, a member has the right to quit the band. The band doesn't have to keep someone out of loyalty. It's harsh but true. All the band members have sacrificed things for FM, and they all got a huge return for their sacrifices.
More importantly, a FM touring lineup with Christine McVie, Stevie Nicks, Neil Finn, and Mike Campbell could never be seen as a blemish on their history. In fact, if anything, history will probably say FM lived up their history of drama and lineup changes right up to the end.

And, it’s not like this tour was ever going to add to the band’s legacy, even if there wasn’t a split with Lindsey. It was always going to just be a celebration of a legacy. Which legacy is the big difference, IMO. Lindsey talks about the band’s 43 year legacy, Mick seems to be focused on the band’s 50 year legacy. But, really, what better way to celebrate the band’s legacy than to have unexpected drama up until the very end? It really doesn’t get more Fleetwood Mac than that.

I disagree on that. They could not handle their inner band fights, but instead of calling it quits with dignity, they decided to hire two random blokes and tour as if nothing had happened - for money and money alone.
I'm sorry but for me the legacy of the current incarnation of this band is that they are the most sneaky, ungrateful and greedy people who ever shared a stage.

I agree with you--there is a definite air of greed to this stunt, and Mick said it himself, it's a new band. The most celebrated line up of this band is the one that is most largely recognized by fans. And that's the Rumors lineup. I am not saying that's right or wrong, but there is an element of truth their that I don't think can be ignored. Otherwise--why make such a BIG deal when Christine came back (or when Lindsey left and Stevie begged him to play at Clinton's inauguration....didn't she claim she would Never speak to him again if he didn't....bet he wishes he had a crystal ball :)) Granted Christine and Peter and all the prior departures were before the time of social media, so didn't nearly get the focus and attention that Lindsey's firing has.
This latest stunt by this group wreaks of greed, dishonesty, and a heaping dose of diva that prior "riffs" didn't.

exactly! they are back to their legacy of being the laughing stock - band of immature individuals jumping at each others' throat. i'd rather jack legacy.
the new part is obvious greed. they didn't really have a public legacy of that, even though fans always knew it, especially about Mick.
neither is the legacy LB wanted for FM, especially not since rejoining for the Dance in their more sober period.

The upcoming tour is a copy of a copy of a . . . every Fleetwood Mac tour since 2003. Its legacy will be only one of commercial conquest. But the band legacy could have been something more substantial if Mick and Stevie had agreed to a new album under the band name. They did not. LINDSEY Buckingham has described his departure from Fleetwood Mac as “not my doing or my choice”.
The band announced in April that they would tour without the musician, who wrote and sang on some of their biggest hits, including Go Your Own Way and Tusk. Buckingham had been a member since he joined the group in 1974 with his then-girlfriend Stevie Nicks.
During a set at a campaign fundraiser for Democratic congressional candidate Mike Levin in Los Angeles, Buckingham was filmed speaking about his firing.

In the video, which was shared on YouTube and Twitter, he said: “It’s been an interesting time on a lot of levels. For me, personally, probably some of you know that for the last three months I have sadly taken leave of my band of 43 years, Fleetwood Mac.
“This was not something that was really my doing or my choice. I think what you would say is that there were factions within the band that had lost their perspective.”
He added: ” What that did was to harm — and this is the only thing I’m really sad about, the rest of it becomes an opportunity — it harmed the 43-year legacy that we had worked so hard to build.
“That legacy was really about rising above difficulties in order to fulfil one’s higher truth and one’s higher destiny.”

Buckingham also spoke about a “loss of perspective” in Washington, saying: “The loss of perspective we see now is indeed threatening to harm the legacy that is the United States.
“In the context of that you’ve got to think of what needs to be done. “It is not going come from the top down, it is going come from the ground up. This is why we are here.

“And so, I am most honoured and most pleased to have been asked in my own small way to help in that pushback which very, very much needs to happen in order to continue the legacy that we all have come to value.”
The group will tour later this year with Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers’ guitarist Mike Campbell and Crowded House frontman Neil Finn.

Lindsey Buckingham Thinks His Firing From Fleetwood Mac Was Political
May 13, 2018 / Posted by: J Harvey
Sure, Fleetwood Mac is a legendary rock supergroup that could rest on their laurels and never have to work again. But retirement mansions in nice sections of Florida or Arizona can be pricey. They’re all in that stage of their lives and you would think everyone in the band could get along if only to keep those nostalgia tour dollars rolling in. Not so. With the backing of the rest of the band, co-lead singer Stevie Nicks used her fringed shawl-swathed arm and tambourine to gesture towards the exit for guitarist (and her ex) Lindsey Buckingham to leave the band this past April.
Medium reports that Lindsey spoke publicly for the first time about his dismissal while performing at a political fundraiser for Democratic Congressional candidate Mike Levin on Friday. He seems to be equating it with the current political landscape here in the US? Easy there, Lindsay. It was just a song about a Welsh witch and fallin’, fallin’, fallin’. Let’s not pump it up too much. You know you’ll be asked back when this next Buckingham-less tour doesn’t rake in as much cash as previous ones.
Lindsey was replaced with singer-guitarist Neil Finn from Crowded House and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell. The official reason for his firing was his supposedly refusing to go out on tour again.
As Lindsay went on, some rabid fan of his blamed it all on white witch Stevie and was rather eloquent about it.
And that’s when he equated the situation that led to his firing with the subversion of the US democratic process.
“Now, we also are at a point with our country in Washington where there’s been a loss of perspective. I think the difference was that perhaps there were more separations of powers. There was more potential for checks and balances in that loss of perspective. The loss of perspective we see now is indeed threatening to harm the legacy that is the United States.
Fleetwood Mac is scheduled to kick off a 52-date North American tour in Oklahma in October. Stevie herself spoke on her ex’s pink-slipping during a CBS This Morning appearance on April 25.
“This team wanted to get out on the road, and one of the members didn’t want to go out on the road for a year,” said Nicks. “We just couldn’t agree. When you’re in a band, it’s a team. I have a solo career. I love my solo career, and I’m the boss. But I’m not the boss in this band.”
You can not tell me that, since she broke out of her Klonopin haze, Stevie hasn’t found her sobriety threatened on the regular by having to share the stage with her ex. Those mic stand kicks are a little lower when the guy you broke up with years ago is is still necessary to your financial existence. She’s the boss alright. Stevie probably flew her ass Down Under to nab the Crowded House guy herself, and Tom Petty’s body was probably barely in the ground when she grabbed the other guy.

Well that's true lol but after he was actually gone she had all these interviews saying she's happy and Billy and Rick don't have ego problems and she already let Lindsey go so it doesn't matter and that now they can make an actual rock and roll album etc. Then she changed her tune after a few years.

I personally disagree. I think this totally tarnished their legacy and considering the backlash that extends far beyond the people on this board, I think most people agree. lol, even Judd Apatow compared it to a coup. All this does is make them look immature and greedy. The "FM is all about the drama thing" is cute when you're talking about them in the 70s and 80s when they were young and hot and on a bunch of cocaine. When they're all senior citizens, they just look ridiculous.

This was ungrateful to Lindsey for his importance in the band and so contradicts their own statements it really has affected how I look at them! I have no idea what happened. So many people are so sure this was all Stevie. Remember - he left in 87 right before the tour was to begin. There are also reports of how violent he had been to her on occasion. There are reports of some things he did to embarrass her on stage. None of us have any idea what really happens behind the scenes in this band especially between Stevie and Lindsey. I think people need to cool down on Stevie. We are all heartbroken this might be how it ends. But we don't know how this all went down. We don't know what happens in those rooms when they are together. We don't know how they treat each other and what really is said.

Taking that into consideration... it’s still pretty obvious it’s the goats fault. I take that back , Gumby and the goat.
I have no idea what happened.
here's what we do know:
Lindsey says "this is not my doing or my choice"
Stevie says they did this because "i want to be happy and dance around my house the next 10 years"
conclusion? she's not happy when Lindsey is around so she purged him from the band.
why didn't she leave instead if the band with LB wasn't making her happy? not clear. maybe Mick wouldn't let her since she's his meal ticket.
translation of what Lindsey says for people who need it - i did nothing to cause this and i did not want to leave; but some people in the band lost their perspective.

That’s why I was angry last year. But, I was told it really didn’t matter, it was still a good album. I saw this coming a mile away, so at least they got credible musicians this time out.
That's a polite way to put it -- that's how Lindsey put it the last two or three arena tours of classic rock hits. I don't think he believed much of it.

Okay. I can't make my point any clearer. If you can't, or won't see it, then so be it. Sometimes it IS that black and white.
Yes, let’s ask a 75 year old to choose between a close friend of 50 years and her former husband/now considers a brother over someone who isn’t necessarily a close friend, but a creative partner/bandmate/co-worker to pick a loyalty over a decision she didn’t agree with. As far as Chris is concerned, Lindsey is/was a bandmate whom she held in the highest regard, Mick and John are family. Big difference.
Christine was there for the history of Fleetwood Mac that actually mattered (1968-1998). She was there with Peter Green (as a session player), joined the band shortly after Green’s departure, and stayed with them for the better part of 27 years, suffering through the revolving door of personnel only to become the band’s chief hit writer. Fleetwood Mac has really been her life, and I think it’s unreasonable to hold her to some unreasonable, unrealistic standard based on something we don’t have enough information to accurately judge.
I doubt even Lindsey would expect her to pick sides on this, hence his factions comments. He gets it. Too bad some of his fans don’t. They have all made it clear that she had nothing to do with the decision. To expect that she would leave is ludicrous, and to think she could have stopped something that had already happened isn’t too far behind.

And remember she was violent with him too. She said she flew off of the couch and wanted to kill him when he said he wanted to leave in '87. She also stole his spotlight onstage several times which is why he kicked her. I DO NOT condone his behavior but there are 2 sides to every story. She herself said she knows how to push his buttons.
I agree that we don't know what really happened between SnL behind the scenes. But if you compare the CBS interview that the band did and what Lindsey said last Friday, it's crystal clear to me that she had a hand in his being fired. I think when someone said:"F*ck Stevie Nicks" and she had nothing to do with it he would have stood up for her.

Thanks again for your well reasoned posts. A pleasure to read.
I realise emotions are running high, and people are angry, but there's some very irrational thinking behind many of the posts on this board right now.

I wasn't aware that she never agreed with it. So she was surprised to hear that Lindsey was fired after getting back to London. Does this mean that she had NO IDEA of what was going on within the band? No input as to what the band should do concerning the touring schedule conflict? Yes, we can agree with that, in part. Chris has had quite an illustrious legacy with FM. But let me remind you, that although you seem to think that everything after '98 didn't matter, after Chris took her leave, was when Lindsey took the reins and led the band through the next 20 years. He kept them alive. I think that's an important part of the journey, considering for the most part it is why this latest incarnation of FM is around today. Yeah, Chris is sitting pretty after her 16 yr. hiatus, which I don't begrudge her a bit, nestled in that comfy cash cow known as FM. And the man that kept it together for the last two decades is FIRED! That's some good principle there!

Lindsey Buckingham Finally Explained His Fleetwood Mac Departure
BY WILL ASHTON
Lindsey Buckingham "Big Love" Official Live Video
On April 9th, it was announced that Lindsay Buckingham was no longer a member of Fleetwood Mac. Over 40 years since the singer/songwriter/guitarist joined the world-renowned band, Buckingham either quit the beloved group (again) or he was effectively fired. Rumors had it (no pun intended) that he left the iconic band involuntarily, as was suggested by fellow guitarist Billy Burnette. One of the reasons why Buckingham's departure has been mysterious is because we haven't heard from Buckingham himself since he divorced from Fleetwood Mac. Buckingham has only been involved in a limited number of public engagements in 2018, but the musician was seen publicly again on Friday at a campaign fundraiser for environmental attorney Mike Levin. It was there where Buckingham finally opened up about the much-publicized split. Here's what the rocker had to say:
For me, personally, probably some of you know that for the last three months I have sadly taken leave of my band of 43 years, Fleetwood Mac. This was not something that was really my doing or my choice. I think what you would say is that there were factions within the band that had lost their perspective. The point is that they'd lost their perspective. What that did was to harm -- and this is the only thing I'm really sad about, the rest of it becomes an opportunity -- it harmed the 43-year legacy that we had worked so hard to build, and that legacy was really about rising above difficulties in order to fulfill one's higher truth and one's higher destiny.
Lindsay Buckingham's words, as recounted by a user on Medium, don't specify any Fleetwood Mac band member in particular, although people surrounding the legendary musician at the public event were quick to point fingers at Stevie Nicks, and a few people in attendance weren't afraid to use explicit language when it came to voicing their disdain for her behavior. however, at the fundraiser, which was held to give Mike Levin a chance to represent the 49th Congressional District of California as the Democratic candidate, Buckingham made an effort not to express ill-feelings towards Stevie or any of the other specific band members.
This is not the first time Lindsey Buckingham has separated from Fleetwood Mac, as he previously left the band between the releases of 1987's Tango in the Night and 1997's The Dance, but it's the first time Buckingham didn't choose to leave. We're sure he has more to say, but those words will arrive on a different day. Since Lindsey's exit from the rock band, the veteran rocker has since been replaced by not one, but two separate musicians (which should hopefully serve as a testament to Buckingham's impact in the monumental band). Neil Finn and former Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers bandmate Mike Campbell are filling in for Buckingham now, particularly as they are preparing to tour once again starting in the fall. The tour begins on October 3rd, to be precise, in Tulsa, OK.
Meanwhile, Mick Fleetwood also opened up about Lindsey Buckingham's departure recently. He admitted that it wasn't a "happy situation" with Fleetwood Mac, his partial namesake, and that they needed to make a decision for the good of the band, also noting they felt it was time for Lindsey Buckingham to go. A "majority rule" made the hard choice. In any case, this isn't the last time we'll hear about this split.
I think the decision was made based on a mixture of business and personal reasons. I believe all 5 contributed to the breakdown. This happened over time. I think it is was clear after Say You Will that Stevie never wanted to record with Lindsey again. I think Lindsey’s attitude/behavior also plays a part. I am not convinced by that video shot by fans means he never said he wanted to delay the tour until 2019. He easily could have said that to FM in the weeks preceding that video. His request combined with his comments over the Classic shows and his manager PLUS the ongoing tension with Stevie may have been what cemented his fate. Was it the right decision? I don’t think so. She is obviously narcissistic and has an overflated ego (as does Mick, and as does Lindsey). It’s disappointing. I think the four will regret the decision. But the decision was made. I think the idea anyone is above being fired is ridiculous, no matter how popular or important someone is. If they had given Stevie her walking papers for not recording what became BuckVie, that would have been their right.
I am trying not to argue about it with anyone anymore because it is exhausting and people are upset
i completely agree with everything you wrote here. especially the highlighted parts. including that LB probably did originally asked for delay (although most probably Nov 2018 and not 2019) and then backed off by the time of Musicares. which means at the time they fired him the reasoning Mick and Stevie keep citing was not there anymore.
so no arguments from me - from what i can tell you are basically saying the same as most LB, FM, BN and disappointed SN fans here.
from everything you say above and what we can piece together there was no good reason to fire LB, while there were many good reasons to fire SN over the last decade.

Basically yes, except I am acknowledging that the remaining 4 and their management thought there was a reason to fire him....fans and LB and his family and his band just disagree and are disappointed. But the band had their reasons.
Just like they had their reasons *not* to fire Stevie over the years, when it would have been their right to do so.
I don't see any sides as lying...just different perspectives...that fans are not going to necessarily agree with.
While I am disappointed, I am not going to spend time and energy hating or insulting Stevie, Christine, Mick, or John, or waste time hoping the tour fails financially or critically.
I am trying also not to argue with fans who are very upset because I agree no one should tell people how they feel. And I feel bad and how I acted right after this happened. The above paragraph is just stating how I feel and how I am trying to respond to this latest chapter going forward, not saying that anyone is "wrong" if they feel/act differently

Lindsey Buckingham Responds to Fleetwood Mac Firing: "They'd Lost Their Perspective"
“It harmed the 43-year legacy that we had worked so hard to build.”

Despite his lengthy and celebrated tenure with Fleetwood Mac, the iconic British/American band relieved guitarist Lindsey Buckingham of his duties just over a month ago. This past Friday night, Buckingham publicly addressed the firing for the first time—while performing at a campaign fundraiser for California Democratic congressional candidate Mike Levin.
"It's been an interesting time on a lot of levels," Buckingham told the crowd. "For me, personally, probably some of you know that for the last three months I have sadly taken leave of my band of 43 years, Fleetwood Mac. This was not something that was really my doing or my choice. I think what you would say is that there were factions within the band that had lost their perspective [a female fan shouts, '**** Stevie Nicks!', prompting Buckingham to raise his hand].
"Well, it doesn't really matter. The point is that they'd lost their perspective. What that did was to harm— and this is the only thing I'm really sad about, the rest of it becomes an opportunity— it harmed the 43-year legacy that we had worked so hard to build [another fan chimes in, 'That you built, Lindsey']. That legacy was really about rising above difficulties in order to fulfill one's higher truth and one's higher destiny."
It should be noted that "43 years" is actually more like "33 years" (when you pull out the ol' iPhone calculator). Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac a few months after guitarist/singer Bob Welch quit in 1974. Buckingham made his recording debut with the crew on 1975's Fleetwood Mac, which spawned several hits, including "Rhiannon," "Landslide" and "Say You Love Me." He also was a major driving force behind two of their most iconic albums (of their "pop" period, anyway), 1977's Rumours and 1979's Tusk. That said, Buckingham left Fleetwood Mac in 1987—only to rejoin the gang 10 years later. He had been with them ever since—until the firing, of course.
"Words like 'fired' are ugly references as far as I'm concerned," drummer and band cofounder Mick Fleetwood told Rolling Stone last month. "Not to hedge around, but we arrived at the impasse of hitting a brick wall. This was not a happy situation for us in terms of the logistics of a functioning band. To that purpose, we made a decision that we could not go on with him. Majority rules in term of what we need to do as a band and go forward."
Buckingham was replaced by two guitarists—the late Tom Petty's former right-hand man, Mike Campbell, and Neil Finn, he of Split Enz and Crowded House fame. The new version of Fleetwood Mac recently announced a 2018 tour, and you can see all the dates right here.

I agree with every word! I would never, ever condone violence and incidents where that happened were flat out wrong, no matter what the circumstance.
But I think the idea some people have that Lindsey was the only one who was mean is ridiculous. I don't doubt he was mean to her, but I am 100% convinced she was mean right back and probably initiated dozens of arguments herself. Others who were around in those days said the same thing as well.
There were also those audio tapes of Sara Fleetwood and Beverly Vance talking about Stevie and I remember Beverly mentioning that she used to hook up with Lindsey at some point and Stevie and her whole posse knew about it and they really gave her a hard time about it and I think Sara mentions that Stevie would start fights with Lindsey when she'd hear about him and other girls or if he brought someone around. It was definitely a two-way street.

Yes, I mean, if we're going to come up with a story to justify Christine's behavior, we should at least all agree here!
Did she go back to London before the voting and she was never asked about her opinión?
Did she voted against firing Lindsey but it didn't matter because power couple had already made their mind?
Was she asked while in London and she didn't care because she knew power couple had already won?
What is it gonna be?

if it happened nowadays days they would have been both picked up by the police probably, if somebody reported those fights. like Paul Simon and his wife, or whoever that was.

In the CBS debacle, it sounded like she was told not asked, furthermore, didn't she go so far as to say the plan was to tour with Lindsey...something like that... Mick was VERY displeased with that comment.

Their reasoning for voting without her is suspect. Were they protecting her potential future working relationship with Lindsey? Did they go behind her back to avoid her resistance? Or, did they go behind her back before she could get to John, thus preventing her and Lindsey from blocking them?
The other thing that gets me is the language they’re using. “Lindsey will not be participating on THIS tour,” “firing is too strong a word,” and “taken leave” all suggest that whatever is going on isn’t necessarily permanent. I think Lindsey is still a member of the band, at least legally, and that he actually is only on involuntary leave, not fired. The fact that none of them, except Stevie, has been absolute in their language says a lot.

I've noticed that too--could it be for legal reasons (gotta be hard to boot someone after 30+ years?)? Mick was very clear on not using the word fired. The thing that really gets me is the press release they issued "The band wishes Lindsey the best" Talk about a kick where it hurts...that was awful. Part of me thinks if they handled it better/smarter from the outset, would they be reeling in this backlash now? Who knows? But yes, I have noticed the language is suspect to say the least.
Has Stevie been absolute in her language--heard her say "She's sad" and we know she wants to twirl around her house, but has she said something so finite yet? I have admittedly tuned some stuff out--so could have missed.
Regardless--I definitely agree with you. thx!

oh i like that option. and completely possible. of course John should have called her and discuss with her too, if he was smart.

yeah i read it that way, legally, since the first time i read their official statement. they wanted him to leave voluntarily and be out. he said no and started fighting it. i think he's still legally a member. but that may not last forever, if they didn't reach some kind of settlement and are still in legal standstill. maybe they did reach a settlement though, since they are going on with the tour, and he was telling fans on Friday he is too with his solo tour.

They probably knew Christine would be against it given all her praise she had for Lindsey last year. So that would have meant another "impasse" (as Mick put it). Stevie & Mick were for Lindsey's firing and John & Christine against. I read in an interview that Stevie & Mick had to talk John into voting with them and after that they told Christine about it. On the flip side I've heard that all hell broke loose after MusiCares and she was the first one to hop on a plane to London. Maybe that's why she didn't know any of the details. I don't know what to believe anymore. But I agree with you, it's suspect that they voted without her not to mention plain weird because she's a member of the band.

I wasn't aware that she never agreed with it. So she was surprised to hear that Lindsey was fired after getting back to London.
That’s what she said. The others said they got John to vote with them to force Lindsey out.
Does this mean that she had NO IDEA of what was going on within the band?
It might mean she didn’t know ousting Lindsey was in the cards.
No input as to what the band should do concerning the touring schedule conflict?
We’re all only fans, and none of us are qualified to answer that question. All I’m saying is that based on all that has been said up until now, it’s pretty clear that Christine was not part of the decision to oust Lindsey, and based on the tone of what she has said, she was not especially happy about it. But, Mick and John are her family, and she’ll always pick them over the others. That’s just a reality within Fleetwood Mac, especially at this stage.
You got me. SYW, EP, and a couple of oldies tours are the shining pinnacle of the legacy of Fleetwood Mac.
Yes Lindsey does get it, and I feel that at least through comments his family has made, is that he's been screwed.
But, and this seems to be the point you’re missing, by saying “factions,” he implies that not everyone agreed with what happened. He’s implying that he doesn’t blame Christine with that statement.
Perhaps his fans have the right to be ticked off, considering that he's no longer in a band that he's helped mold and shape, and been largely responsible for their sound since 1975.
Lindsey was lucky to have had the opportunity to join a well established band that had a solid record contract, was big enough to be getting played on the radio, was big enough to sell out places like the Fillmore, had been on national TV, was self-managed and free of external pressures, and was just under the radar enough where the label didn’t care what the band gave them. That what was left of that band was a rhythm section and a singer/songwriter used to being just a third should have been a dream come true. He basically had carte blanche within the confides of being in a band to do whatever he wanted. That’s a hell of an opportunity/outlet. The sad thing is that not only did he not appreciate it, he resented and felt held back by it.
And, what Fleetwood Mac brought to Buckingham Nicks was greater than the other way around. Christine’s songs sounded more refined with Stevie and Lindsey, which is expected, since they spent probably as much time recording that first album as they did all of the Bob Welch era albums combined, but the fundamentals of her songs weren’t that all that different. “Over My Head” could have just as easily been on HAHTF. “Rhiannon,” OTOH, went from sounding a typical bar band song with Buckingham Nicks to sounding like an epic rock masterpiece with Fleetwood Mac.
No, not many people would leave FM. Don't you know it's all about the money! Diamonds are a girl's best friend.
If Lindsey had left after they decided to call the the album something other than Fleetwood and not fed us that “it just felt like a duet album” line of crap, I might be inclined to agree, but Lindsey is the one who said close your eyes, grab the money, and run. So, he’s not exactly pure in that regard, either.

Lindsey wanted a final Fleetwood Mac album more than anyone. It's ridiculous to say he was gunning for the money from the tours. No doubt he definitely wanted the money and that had a big part, but he was the main one actually pushing to make an album and put out something new. He wanted the album for years and it didn't happen and I'm sure he was very frustrated by it.

My gut feeling is that there was a huge blowout, and when they decided Lindsey was out, Mike Campbell was the first and only name thrown out, Without much though behind it. It was obvious that TPATH were heavily on Stevie’s mind from her Musicares speech.
I see it going like this.
Blowout…
Stevie: I can’t work with him anymore.
Mick: Okay, but who are we going to get on guitar?
Stevie: Let’s get Mike Campbell. He likes playing Peter Green songs.
Mick: Okay, that could be interesting.

I sympathize with him on that, but if I’m being honest, Stevie may have a point about his production style. It is fairly sui generis and not necessarily appropriate for her songs. I’ve listened to some of the demos, and I can see where she would want something more simple and straight forward. “Silver Girl” is a good example. It didn’t need to be that produced. However, she should have been more involved with that album if she wanted something different for her songs.

I agree. I've always thought her displeasure with some of SYW songs had a big part in her not wanting to get back in the studio with him as producer. I myself even wondered that the BuckVie album would be a lot like Say You Will (which personally I think is fine as an album, not remarkable or anything, just some songs are overproduced) so I was very pleasantly surprised it. I think he reeled it in a little bit and Christine likely made it clear what she wanted so the album turned out great if you ask me. Better than Say You Will, reminds me a lot of Mirage.
I think had Stevie given him the chance, he could've done nice things on her songs but she would not budge.

A song like Everybody Finds Out, beautifully written, would be amazing on an album like BuckVie.

Agreed. I think the main problem with SYW is the running order.
And Silver Girl was just awful. So nasal and lacks melody imo.
This album needed to be edited. Not much wrong with the production.

To be fair, I'd argue several of the songs were overproduced; Illume had those distracting weird voices; Say Goodbye had the unnaturally sped up guitars needlessly taking away from the song; most infamously, Smile At You was downright ruined.

I was never a huge fan of that album, but if you paired it down to one it would have been really good. Yes Illume had those wierd voices and I agree they were bad, but the song just isn't that great. It's got a bout 3 notes in it. Say Goodbye should have been done closer to they way they performed it live. But he did a great job on some of her other songs. I liked Smile at you, thought he made it more interesting.

IA, those were some of the worst of the bunch in terms of production. The others of her songs were mostly fine and I actually really liked Thrown Down and Goodbye Baby.
IMO the worst song was Say You Will itself but that's not because of the production...the song itself is just awful. It sounds like a kindergarteners rhyme on crack.

Silver Girl drags, and if you listen to her demo in the documentary, he didn't actually change it much from her demo. She doesn't bring plinky piano demos in anymore to him, she spends time with her other musicians to bring more fleshed out production ideas to him. Her demo had flute on it, and he changed that to some sort of synthesized keyboard that sort of mimicked a high flute-y sound and played almost just what was on her demo. So it was one of her new found drone-y songs (she would repeat the same style on Cheaper Than Free and even on You May Be The One -- but Dave salvaged the latter one with his acoustic guitar; CTF was beyond salvage). It's like her "poems" are just long lists of words anymore. That's why I like Destiny Rules (even tho she cribs the same lines in Illume)-- he did a great job on DR with the guitar.
He basically had carte blanche within the confides of being in a band to do whatever he wanted. That’s a hell of an opportunity/outlet. The sad thing is that not only did he not appreciate it, he resented and felt held back by it.
Thank you!!! I get so tired of hearing Lindsey talk about the "machine" that is Fleetwood Mac. He wanted his freedom, he wanted to work on solo material and on and on and on. Honestly, I can't remember him ever saying how much he appreciates Fleetwood Mac, how much he enjoys being in Fleetwood Mac, how he wouldn't trade it for anything. Instead, the closest he can come is to say I'm sad because we have always worked through the "disfunction." Then of course, the plug..."everything else is turned into a positive." Oh yes, your precious solo material, lest we forget.
How about saying something positive about the band? How about saying how much they have given you rather than the other way around.
Honestly, I like Lindsey, he's *close* to being my favorite member and yes, he is by far the nicest and most generous when it comes to fans. But holy hell, the band must get sick and tired of hearing how they are such a thorn in his side.

I get what you're saying, especially considering his repetitive speech about the big/small machine and all that, but I don't think that means he (in recent years) isn't grateful for the band. He's talked lovingly about the band multiple times and even wrote that song On With the Show from the BM album for the band.
I think he still wishes the band would be more 'out there' creatively but in general I think that was much more of an issue in the past than it has been in recent years and his speech about big/small machine is his weirdo way of accepting that. Plus I think he really valued that 'cycles'/coming full circle thing he always talked about. That's why he wanted them to do a final album, he really wanted to CREATE within the group and he valued wrapping up their final chapters.
Ironically Stevie is the one who I think has most treated Fleetwood Mac like a thorn in her side. Lindsey may have bitched about it but hey, he still did the work and got his job done. Stevie on the other hand has blown them off/complained about them a bunch of times, ever since her solo career took off. Her lack of availability during Tango in the Night, the album that was supposed to happen soon after The Dance but didn't, the album that was supposed to happen after Unleashed but didn't, the 2013 tour that was actually supposed to start in 2012 but she said no, when 24 KG came out and she was complaining that she couldn't promote it enough because of the FM tour, wouldn't record with them etc.

I like the "Silver Girl" demo marginally better than what ended up on SYW, but the song wasn't good to begin with. "She was a silver girl, lost in a high tech world..."
As far as the rest of the production on SYW, I didn't care for what he did on "Illume." However, I'm in the minority and love the finished product of "Smile At You." She could never achieve vocally what we all know and love from the old demos, so I thought Lindsey did a nice job with it. I agree with you regarding "Destiny Rules." I heard it on the XM channel, and his production was stellar.

Loved his production on Smile at you, Illume, thrown down, Destiny Rules. Her lyrics were god awful. What is he supposed to do with someone who won’t take suggestions.
That’s what she said. The others said they got John to vote with them to force Lindsey out.
Can anyone post a link to the video or article where this is stated? I'm really curious about this. I don't remember that.
It might mean she didn’t know ousting Lindsey was in the cards.
Or maybe she knew it was a possibility, but she didn't know it actually happened. Meaning she was part of the discussion, but didn't know the trigger had been pulled.
A lot of speculation going on. No one knows exactly what went down. I'd say it's fair enough that Christine was one who didn't want to get rid of Lindsey. But I believe she concurred with the bands' decision to based on the touring conflict. We all know how eager she was, once she got back in FM to get on the road and tour. She was full tilt in the band touring, and recording. A shame that never happened with the Rumours 5. Thanks Stevie!
You got me. SYW, EP, and a couple of oldies tours are the shining pinnacle of the legacy of Fleetwood Mac.
The pinnacle(s) you're referring to will NEVER happen with FM again, no matter who is in the band. That's what discouraged Stevie so much from recording after SYW. She wanted a "Rumours" and a "Dreams". Lindsey was more about artistic expression and making a current statement from the band. It wasn't about sales or commercial success. You certainly can't fault him for Stevie not wanting to partake, and well, Christine was retired to the English countryside. GO LINDSEY! The band carried on and kept their name out there at least. SYW wasn't a bad record at all. And I'd dare say exposed some new fans to this animal known as FM. Let's not forget the documentary of the making of SYW and the Live in Boston concert DVD that were part of the whole ordeal. More good promotion for the band. Keeping the name out there. That's good for the legacy, no?
But, and this seems to be the point you’re missing, by saying “factions,” he implies that not everyone agreed with what happened. He’s implying that he doesn’t blame Christine with that statement.
He's probably referring, at least in part, to Christine. We don't know for sure what he meant when he said that. I do agree that she is probably the one that he has the least animosity towards since they seemed to be on the same page. That's why we got BuckVie.
I've always felt, and most people do, that the sum of the Rumours 5 has always been greater than the parts. That's why a lot of us are so disappointed that they couldn't rise above this latest conflict and give us some new music and a proper tour. They did indeed lose their perspective.
Well if I was Lindsey I'd take the money too! But he was the one who wanted more for FM. Not just to be some touring cash cow operating machine. Is it his fault that Stevie didn't want to record new music with the band? Sometimes you have to be a little politically correct to try to preserve what you feel you have left in the band. Maybe hoping for different outcomes in the future?
Lindsey wanted a final Fleetwood Mac album more than anyone. It's ridiculous to say he was gunning for the money from the tours. No doubt he definitely wanted the money and that had a big part, but he was the main one actually pushing to make an album and put out something new. I know I read it somewhere. We’ve been inundated with so much that I don’t remember where I saw it. Still, the only two who’ve publicly justified why Lindsey had to go are Stevie and Mick. John hasn’t said anything beyond he likes the new guys and Christine said she wasn’t part of the decision. If majority rules, and Christine wasn’t part of it, it’s not hard to read between the lines.
Or maybe she knew it was a possibility, but she didn't know it actually happened. Meaning she was part of the discussion, but didn't know the trigger had been pulled.
Again, not something any of us will ever be qualified to know.

But, Stevie’s reluctance is nothing new. I agree she should have been booted on principle, but the reality is she’s the money and she’s close to Mick.
The pinnacle(s) you're referring to will NEVER happen with FM again, no matter who is in the band.
Hence why, if it’s not the classic lineup, at least it’s got top shelf talent and perhaps a chance to hear some favorites that haven’t been played in decades.
Keeping the name out there. That's good for the legacy, no?
Is it? Jim Kale, the bassist for The Guess Who, owns the name and goes out on tour with a bunch of guys who weren’t in that band’s classic lineup. Meanwhile, Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman formed their own duo to go out and play the classics because they don’t have the legal right to the name, even though Burton was the lead singer for all of their hits. It would be like Pete Townshend and Roger Daltry not being able to call themselves The Who.
Regardless, Fleetwood Mac was largely on life support after 2004, and became little more than an oldies act. I’d much rather have had a new band like Buckingham Fleetwood McVie creating new, viable music than reanimating the bloated corpse that Fleetwood Mac had become every few years. When the most exciting to happen to a band is the return of someone that made it possible to hear different old songs, and effectively giving us a proper tour for TITN, it’s hard for me to be overly sentimental for that period.

...Their perspective is the bag of money.
I agree. The following is from the thread "Stevie as scapegoat" in the Stevie Nicks forum with a nice recap from Murrow and my response.
I've expressed some of this in other threads but this seems more appropriate for the purpose.
Yes I do blame her for a lot.
2005 or so: I'm not doing another Mac album as the only female.
2014: Can we delay Mac activity even though Chris is back cos I've booked studio time.
One tour later
2016: I don't want to do a Mac album period.
My considered opinion is that Mick should have said "We're not waiting" to her in 2016 (better still 2014) the same way he claims he's done with Lindsey.
More than anything I blame Mick. He's just got too much of a soft spot for Stevie to put his foot down with her about anything these days. Did he seriously think having BOTH those two back in the band was going to work for any great length of time. All it produced was 20 years of jack s*** apart from Say You Will and that poxy excuse for an EP.
Mick's soft spot is that he knows which side his bread is buttered on, realizing that an FM with Stevie means much more money in his wallet than one without. This is why so many are disgusted - this once great band has been reduced to nothing more than a cash cow for him. Witness his charging fans $600 a pop plus fees for a brief meeting (ticket price not included!) as part of what I call his "Meet & Fleece" program.
There are also those who are very disappointed with Christine as I am but I'm certain that in an earlier era Christine would have been much more outspoken. The thing is she's now pushing 75 and age sadly does take its toll. :(

Except in this case the core of the Rumours 5 was still there. Problem was that one of the members didn't want to make new music anymore, within the confines of FM.

Scapegoat??
Ok so that term is used for a person blamed for sins or mistakes of others. Who would be those others? Mick? Well most people blame him along with her. John? We blame John, but he didn’t get the ball rolling, according to Mick he had to be talked into it. Christine? Again, she didn’t stop it but she made it clear that she knew nothing about it so she is not a part of “majority rules”. Lindsey? He made it clear it’s not his doing or his choice.
Meanwhile Stevie went to great lengths to explain she wanted Lindsey out so she can be happy and dancing. So what is she a scapegoat for??

Bottom line, for those who proclaim this latest Mac chapter is forward movement, it will only be so under 1 condition: if they record a new studio album. Without new material, they are in even sadder shape than they were before. At least last time around FM was an in tact oldies group. Now they’re an oldies group that’s being cobbled together from the ruins of other oldies groups.
I will also argue that there was a point in time where the FM name ceased to be fluid. I’d wager that point was in the first half of the 1990s. By that point they had fully become a legacy act. No new radio hits were in the cards, and the band’s lineup and set list had both cemented. From there out the public has tolerated no more than 1 of the 5 members being absent. They were smart when Christine left to not replace her- we’ll see how the public reacts this go around with Lindsey’s replacements. If they monkey with the lineup any further, they risk opening for REO Speedwagon again. :p

We still don’t know what the impass was. What exactly did each faction want or not want.
We still don’t know what the impass was. What exactly did each faction want or not want.
Mere speculation, but I believe part of the impasse was that Stevie couldn't stand to see Lindsey being more chummy with Christine than her. She hated that they did a record and tour together. She hated it even more when he showed more attention to her on stage at the classic east and west shows. Don't **** with the classic Stevie/Lindsey melodrama mantra. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Anybody?

Who’s been saying that this is forward movement?

I agree that the only way this new lineup matters is if they make an album. They would be fools to let the opportunity to make an album with talent of that caliber pass, and I have every faith in their ability to do just that. The thing is, a new Fleetwood Mac album wouldn’t be possible with Lindsey in the band, but it is possible now. Just how probable a new album is remains to be seen. But new album or not, I don’t think anyone sees this as a step forward.

At least they won’t be playing songs off the same five albums this time out. That’s more interesting to me at this point, and I’m more interested in seeing Lindsey be the artist he wants to be.

Yeah, Mike and Neil are legends in their own right. Billy and Bekka were second generation rockers, Rick a sideman, and Dave Mason a has-been who had nothing new or compelling to offer. There is no parallel with this lineup.

I think that’s part of it. I think all her life choices are finally catching up with her. She’s older. She’s without “love”. She’s childless. She has lost her creative spark. She lost Tom Petty. She sees Linz happy and with kids and more creative than she’s ever been. She sees that she was wrong about the album and people did buy it. And knows more would have bought it under Fleetwood Mac name. I’m sure LB was sure to point that out at the Classics and Music Cares. She was tired of being held to any recording and wanted to be “happy” which in her case is just Denial about where she ended up in life. Creatively and figurativly dried out husk of her former self. Sad.

I think she was mad at him on the last tour and they got into lots of spats (and in my opinion a lot of that was hugely influenced by him being frustrated that she wasn't agreeing to do an album), so she had something against him to begin with. But unlike other times in the past where's been really mad and then gets over it/he makes it up by the next tour which goes better (Say You Will going onto Unleashed and on being a good example), the Buckingham McVie album only made her more pissed at him. I 100% believe she was very bothered by that album and them touring together. Maybe jealousy isn't the right word, but I COMPLETELY think that while she didn't want to get in the studio with him, she did not remotely expect them to release their own duo and tour it and so she just was not happy about it. Maybe with their battle of the wills it felt to her like a move by him to spite her somehow and maybe he did indeed partially mean it that way, a sort of "Okay Stevie, you don't want to record, then fine. I'm done waiting around for you, we're moving forward." Who even knows. I think that really had a big role in exacerbating the situation and getting it to this point. She's always had her up-and-down, ever-changing feelings about Lindsey but throw in this new resentment/jealousy/contempt on top of an already 'down' period, then comes Tom Petty's death, then comes a conflict about the tour which equals a chance to bring Tom's and her friend Mike Campbell into the band, and then here we are.

Ouch! Pretty brutal assessment but probably spot on. Her mother passing away has likely played a major role in all this as well.

There was a blind item on some gossip website that said another member of a legendary rock band may leave their band if things don't work out soon.
At least one person in one of the Facebook fan groups claimed they had insider knowledge that Christine either left the band, or is close to leaving the band. A different person in the same group said they talked to other insiders who said the story is a bunch of garbage. Other fans were discussing this rumour too, too, both in that group and another, but I'm not sure where the supposed Christine connection to this blind item began.
It's all garbage and rumours at this point from what I understand. Of course, that's what I thought about the Lindsey "rumours," and we all know how that turned out... :distress:

I agree, since I have no interest in seeing this iteration of FM, even with Christine in the band (and I am a longtime Chris fanatic), since I am completely disgusted over their firing of Lindsey. I am definitely looking forward to solo work from Lindsey, but another BuckVie would be even better.

The CBS debacle clearly showed how unhappy she was. At this point, I am sure contracts are done....at least for the US leg. But, perhaps there are out clauses baked in there. Another poster (Elle I think--if I am wrong, apologies) mentioned in another threat, perhaps John/Chris bail after the US leg. I do find it curious at this point, we don't have any international dates yet--at least London-half the band is British :)
I would love it if it were true....so many folks thought she sucked up the Lindsey situation because she couldn't possibly bail on them now....good on her if she did/is/threatening too.
I am sure is she enjoying playing with Neil... He's a talented musician. That said, I am sure after 16 years, she came back to play with Mick, John, Stevie and Lindsey....and if she's not, well.....
Lastly, if this is true, Lindsey was spot on.....they destroyed the legacy (I think they did anyway, but I appreciate why other posters/fans disagree)

Yeah, this is why I can't believe that rumour. Also, it would be pretty stupid to bail at this point.

We are well on our way to seeing a Fleetwood Mac with only Stevie and Mick remaining from the Rumours lineup. They will run the brand into the ground and milk every penny they can get from it as long as they can. I fully expect John and Chris to leave after this tour. The magic is gone. FM will be on a double bill tour with remnants of another fractured classic rock act within the next few years.

I 100% agree with this. I don't think new music is happening. When would they even do it? I don't think there will be any more tours with this 'lineup' either. After the last tour John basically said he's not gonna keep doing this for much longer. Stevie will have whatever solo trek she'll do next that will, as per usual, take roughly 2 years. And I read that Mike Campbell has plans to record or tour or both with his other band for right after this tour. And sorry, but nobody cares about Neil Finn. These people are all nearly 70 or already in their 70s. Who knows what their health will even be like in a few years, or if they'll all still be alive.
IMO this tour is the end of Fleetwood Mac and it's just awful how they ruined their whole legacy at this time. Once the drama started, they should've made the decision to disband after MusiCares. It would have been going out on a high point.

That’s what remains to be seen, IMO. I could just as easily see things going well and clicking, inspiring Stevie to record with the band. With Lindsey out and Mike in, I think there’s a different approach to recording that might be more appealing to Stevie.

That album is already done. It took eight days to record. Albums don’t have to take a year to make, hence my above comment. If they approach an album with that spirit, then I think there’s a good possibility of new music.

Lol you sure love making posts like these don't you. I understand the temptation, but you should know that it is possible to not construct a thesis outline arguing with every single post you disagree with. But if you insist!
#1. Well Fleetwood Mac goes on tours of that magnitude lol. If John is gonna tour as a Fleetwood Mac member, he's gonna go a giant tour. They've pretty much always been allergic to the entire concept of small/lowkey tours, as would be expected from a big name band.
#2. Whether she wants to record with the band or not, Stevie will never give up her solo projects and I personally believe that she values them over FM regardless of who is in the band. I 100% believe that nothing about this switch-up will deter her from her typical solo plans.
#3. I never said that I knew if/when/how the album was coming along. If it was done that quickly that's wonderful for them. They're gonna go and release it and do shows supporting it. And the odds of a Fleetwood Mac record going that quickly are low, Lindsey or not. Stevie's own IYD album that she had the time of her life making took a full year. And then her 24KG album, entirely just re-recorded old demos, was made in a 2 week time crunch that, as per her press for the album, she emphasized was a big deal and that she was not too happy about. If you think they're gonna make new music, that's great! I personally don't! Who knows what'll happen!
#4. Okay let me revise that. 90% of the typical Fleetwood Mac concert ticket-buying public does not care about Neil Finn.

Bands also slow down. Maybe do a 90 date tour instead of 180…

Except with Tom dead, Lindsey out, and Mike in Fleetwood Mac, I could see that equation changing, depending on how the tour goes. She’ll definitely do more solo dates, I’m not arguing that point. But, I don’t know that her solo tour will have an impact on a new Fleetwood Mac album, if that’s even a probability. If anything, I could see her being more eager to do a FM album in the wake of LBCM. ”Don’t blame it on me…”
#3. I never said that I knew if/when/how the album was coming along. If it was done that quickly that's wonderful for them. They're gonna go and release it and do shows supporting it.
I only found that out on that Norman’s guitar video. I get the vibe that the Dirty Knobs are Mike’s equivalent to the Mick Fleetwood BluesBand. It’s there, it’s an outlet, but the primary gig is Fleetwood Mac.

I doubt it would be weeks, but it doesn’t have to take a year, either. There’s a balance. It’s possible to make a good album without trying to make the next “Pet Sounds.”
If you think they're gonna make new music, that's great! I personally don't! Who knows what'll happen!
I’m 50/50. It’s now possible, which it wasn’t before, but the probability is what remains to be seen. They certainly have the talent to make a good album, but they also have the history of blowing opportunities.
#4. Okay let me revise that. 90% of the typical Fleetwood Mac concert ticket-buying public does not care about Neil Finn
Neil has his own fan base and is a critic’s darling. But, really, they’re banking on Petty fans looking for some type of connection to Tom. While maybe not perfect, Mike and Stevie together in a band is something they hope TPATH fans can latch on to. Brilliant move from a business perspective.

Sad.
It's funny how we all perceive things so differently
From the recent footage of her, I see Stevie as a strong, balanced, focused individual who is dealing very well with older life, and is in a good place within herself. Determined to make the most of her time left on this planet.
She still loves performing, and who knows she may yet produce more music, we shall see.

It's a pet peeve of mine when people throw out made-up numbers like this based on nothing factual whatsoever.
I've been an FM fan since the 70s, and a Finn fan since True Colours came out in 1980. I would concede that I'm almost certainly in the minority of the "FM concert ticket-buying public," but do we really only make up 10% of the Mac fanbase? Nah, not buying that.

That's great for you but it's not exactly a secret that the overwhelming majority of ticket-buyers at a Mac concert are people who like Dreams, GYOW, etc and want to see at least what mostly resembles Fleetwood Mac (basically as long as Stevie is there) play those songs. I've read about on other tours when songs like Say Goodbye were played, it seemed as if half the crowd didn't know the lyrics/looked bored. Those people don't even know who Peter Green is, Neil Finn certainly isn't going to be on their radar. FWIW, I doubt they'll care much about Mike Campbell either unless they're fans of TPATH, but Neil Finn just isn't that well known to most people if they don't follow that specific circle of music he's in.

Eh, it keeps my mind from going completely insane while I’m out of commission during my treatments.
I am sorry you're going through that.

Lindsey Buckingham on Fleetwood Mac Firing: 'They'd Lost Their Perspective'
"This was not something that was really my doing or my choice," guitarist says of exit from band

I unfortunately think that everything pales in comparison to his heart attack, and equally, to that bitter old hag kicking him out of the band, without which she'd still be a f*cking waitress, were it not for him.

Yes, but we would have had those anyway.
Nothing will make up for losing the Rumours 5. :(
And now Lindsey may never sing again!

lol guys, i'm trying to find something positive here! those shows last fall were amazing.
but i basically agree with everything you said Nancy. we would have had those solo shows last fall, in between Mac shows, anyway, maybe even with Christine dropping in, and possibility of European and Aus / NZ fans to experience Lindsey solo.
and the heart attack puts a huge damper on Lindsey's "i'm fine" spin last fall, considering we now know the whole thing was obviously eating him inside all that time.

When the last insult comes down from your friends
Hoping all your blind ambition will fall
And the love you know has come to an end
And the silence that answers your call
Save me
Well, it's gone too far

The silence that answers your call reminded me too much of the Macsters who wouldn't even speak to Lindsey.
By the way, one of my favorite Mac reviews said that when Chris and Lindsey duet, she pleads and croons while he demands and howls like a wolf. I love that dichotomy.
And on Too Far Gone, I just get such a kick out of the way he says "GONE." She's contemplating all the why nots and he punctuates "gone," the time for hesitation being over.

A**holes.
Their duets were always my favorite songs! Think About Me, Hold Me!
He's the only musical genius among them. He sees things that "the normal musician" just doesn't. The drum breaks in Gone are sheer genius.
FM died, the day they fired him.
