I find it interesting that all these early versions have been unearthed but there didn't seem to be any for the first go-round of reissues. Very excited about those and high quality versions of those great early shows.
Once again, disappointed in no live DVD. They had BETTER be putting together a massive Blu-Ray set!

I get sick of buying (some of) the same thing(s), over and over.
So disc one, is that what I bought in 03/04? They're just selling it to me again?
I can't believe they included the pre B/N songs on the live disc. I'm happy about that.
Anyone seen a price? This material isn't Rumours, so if it's a $100, I doubt it will move many units.

What's the difference between the remastered Disc 1 songs, with the Disc 5+6 songs??

I don't really believe they are "early" versions, but are being reworked and passed off as such. I guess if they called them "remixed" or "reworked" maybe they wouldn't be as appealing? I thought the same thing about the early versions on Mirage, especially "Gypsy".

Fleetwood Mac will include a slew of previously unreleased studio and live recordings on a new reissue of their 1975 self-titled album, out January 19th.
RELATED
Fleetwood Mac's 50 Greatest Songs
From British blues to California rock, from smooth sunshine to the most haunting breakup epics ever
The new set will be available in several formats, including a deluxe edition featuring three CDs, a DVD and a vinyl LP. An expanded two-CD set will also be available, as will a single disc featuring a remastered version of the original album. The remastered audio will also be available digitally and on streaming services.
Released in 1975, Fleetwood Mac marked the Fleetwood Mac's tenth studio album, but only their first with Lindsey Buckingham on guitar and Stevie Nicks on vocals. The record topped the Billboard album chart and produced several classics including "Rhiannon" and "Landslide."
The forthcoming deluxe and expanded editions of Fleetwood Mac will notably feature a complete alternate version of the album made up entirely of previously unreleased outtakes and live recordings. The live songs were recorded during concerts in 1976, and the deluxe edition will include 14 additional unreleased live tracks.
The deluxe and expanded sets will also include the remastered album, as well as single mixes for "Over My Head," "Rhiannon," "Say You Love Me" and a previously unreleased version of "Blue Letter." Meanwhile, the deluxe edition will come include the original album pressed on 180-gram vinyl, plus a DVD featuring 5.1 surround sound and high-resolution 24/96 stereo audio mixes of the record.

Another great perk is we get the single versions of the 3 singles. Lindsey's added guitar licks just add so much to these songs. You never hear these versions on the radio anymore because every station loads the songs from the CD. These added guitar licks really show the master production of Lindsey Buckingham.
Ok now I need help to diagnose myself. I used to love hearing Lindsey sing hypnotized and the 1975 version of Station Man. Now I just cringe. I miss Bob Welch so much that I don't want to hear anyone else sing hypnotized.

Those were on the set they sold us in 2003. Now we have to buy them again, to get the other stuff.
Agreed. Bob really got the shaft, historically speaking, from the band.

Thanks. The promise of some extra guitar work on the single versions is exciting.
Otherwise, I’m not stoked for this, to be honest...
Although I am looking forward to Why, alternate Blue Letter, Jam #2, and I’m So Afraid instrumental.

I'd guess there was never a long term plan. After Rumours the next most celebrated album is Tusk and that obviously had a lot of material ripe for release. After that 'deluxe' did well enough they obviously thought Mirage would be a logical next step rather than hopping back 2 albums.

I'm baffled as to why this is being released in January? Like you'd think they'd want to cash in on Christmas sales. Was bummed when I read the live tracks are recorded in the exact 2 places of 2 bootleg albums I have owned since 1978 that even then were in perfect sound quality. I still own those records but haven't played them in YEARS. Of all the live shows on that tour, why oh why couldn't they have given us music from shows that haven't been bootlegged already?

"Say you Love me-- EARLY version" is up at ITUNES to purchse. It's just a different RAWer mix -- but it's kind funky and rockin with an entirely different guitar part. Everything else is pretty much the same. but the ending is really cool

What's weird is that they're including the audio of the complete Midnight Special performance on Disc 2. You'd think they'd at least include the video of that appearance on the DVD as a bonus (though they pulled the same thing with the Mirage reissue).

What’s odd is the price for the pre-order of the Super Deluxe Edition is $99 on Amazon which I know will go down some before it’s release, but PledgeMusic has it selling for $61 which is quite the disparity. I will no longer order from PledgeMusic because you don’t get what you order on the release date, far from it. It’s at least a week later, but one time I ordered something and it literally took months. They claimed they were outta stock which was crap because I ordered it months before the street date. All the while you could get it on Amazon.

I'm holding off a bit too. I am so excited though. I bought a new wave Bose CD player on Black Friday $200 off retail. I am thrilled to re-discover all my old CDs with this new awesome sound. These new deluxe releases are even more exciting for that reason. This deluxe is second best to the Tusk one IMHO. Such rare live stuff and incredible new stuff too.

I don't know if words can express how much love I have for this album, Sugar Daddy aside (which isn't really bad at all) this album fires on all cylinders one track after another and has, for me, since sweet '75.
Rumours seemed like part 2 to me when it came out, and I really didn't understand all the fuss at the time, coz I was always pointing back to this album as the real shiznit.
I've drooled over the idea of a 5.1 of this for a couple decades now:)
sorry it never came out in quad back in the day.
I could talk about this record for days, but in a nutshell, it's dark but beautifully recorded and a true audiophile test disc for your friends:)
very deeply emotive and beautifully played, you just know hearing it that everyone is in top form. Just an amazing record.

It's so beautiful and it reminds me of their craft. I hear the Buckingham/McVie elements even more now that they put their latest album out.
But then you have Landslide Rhiannon and Crystal (which is very BuckVie). I can't wait for this deluxe edition.

Yes! Amazing to hear Stevie speak those words so seriously before the song starts. The chorus reminds me of how the song was sung live in the very early days. Overall much more mellow and dark than the original to me. I got shivers up my spine with the extended ending too. "Good one band!"
So far that's all I've played. Burning the early takes to CD to listen to on the way to work.
A quick listen to the live songs and the quality is sublime compared to the bootlegs. I'm guessing there'll be a lot of happy people:blob2::laugh:

This is a great set, hearing the new band in all its pure glory is amazing. Loving the Sugar Daddy early version- Christine Perfexion! Nothing is as great as Stevie's 75-76 live performances- that beautiful precious instrument glad it's captured in clarity here. Lindsey's guitar really did shift the band in a new direction. Superb.

Reissue Review: Fleetwood Mac’s pivotal 1975 s/t LP remains a timeless classic
The Fleetwood Mac story is well known, but endlessly fascinating and one that’s increasingly difficult to picture happening today. Like the Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett story, Fleetwood Mac started in the ’60s as a psychedelic rock band led by a man who’s probably a musical genius and whose mental health and use of psychedelic drugs caused him to leave the band just a few years after they formed (in Fleetwood Mac’s case, said man is Peter Green). Then, like Pink Floyd, they continued on with other singers and found massive fame by the mid ’70s with a sound that hardly resembled their early era. (Also like Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac’s early era is still under-appreciated today.) The “classic” era of Fleetwood Mac that we know and love today hit its peak with 1977’s Rumours — the world’s most famous breakup album where all three of the songwriters’ exes are performers on the very songs that were written about them — but that era began in 1975 with Fleetwood Mac’s self-titled album (their second self-titled album and tenth album overall). Fleetwood Mac have been giving expanded reissues to the albums from that era over the past few years, and today comes a reissue of that 1975 self-titled LP, complete with early takes, live recordings, a DVD, rare and unseen photos, and in-depth liner notes.
Fleetwood Mac came about after Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, and Christine McVie were looking for a replacement for guitarist/vocalist Bob Welch, and they happened upon Lindsey Buckingham. Buckingham agreed on the terms that his girlfriend and musical partner Stevie Nicks join the band, and Fleetwood Mac would quickly prove that that was the best thing that ever happened to the band. Stevie Nicks wrote and sang lead on two songs on Fleetwood Mac, “Rhiannon” and “Landslide,” both of which remain two of the most iconic songs not just in Fleetwood Mac’s discography but in all of modern pop music. As someone who grew up in the ’90s, I’m admittedly a little tired of “Landslide” because of all the overplayed covers (like by The Smashing Pumpkins and the Dixie Chicks, who both had hits with the song), but “Rhiannon” still sounds like it could’ve come out yesterday. The endlessly-worshipped gypsy woman that Stevie Nicks became is all there on that one song. The mysterious woman protagonist in the lyrics, the haunting minor-key chord progression, Stevie’s soaring, unmistakable voice — all the elements that would define Stevie Nicks’ best songs for years to come are there. Not to mention Stevie, Christine, and Lindsey’s three-part harmonies in the chorus, the very harmonies that would become a trademark of the band’s sound.
That harmony style was one of the many things about Fleetwood Mac that separated them from their peers and influenced tons of hip modern bands, as fellow ’70s soft rock acts faded away and became dinosaurs. Fleetwood Mac came out during a watered-down period for rock music, and Fleetwood Mac were associated with a lot of those more forgettable bands at the time. Part of what really set them apart, though, were their (bi-regional) ’60s roots. When you think about organic pop harmonies, you think about The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Mamas & the Papas, The Kinks, but Fleetwood Mac entered that conversation after those bands had either broken up or gone creatively stale. With this lineup of Fleetwood Mac, you had a rhythm section who had actually been in the band when they were a British psych band, and then you had Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks who never gave up on their 1960s California dreams. Lindsey famously was in a band who once opened for Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, and his fiery guitar solos always had a hint of that West Coast acid rock, while Stevie tells stories at live shows to this day about how 1982’s “Gypsy” was partially about being enamored with the vivid hippie imagery of singers like Janis and Grace Slick. That, combined with a more personal songwriting style than most AOR bands had at the time, resulted in timeless songs like Fleetwood Mac‘s “Crystal,” “World Turning,” “Monday Morning,” and “I’m So Afraid.” There’s a little ’60s jangle, a little ’70s pop shine, and a whole lot of prescient insight into what sounds would hold up in the future.
Fleetwood Mac also has its more dated songs, like the rock n’ rollin’ “Blue Letter” and the piano pop of “Say You Love Me,” but even those moments succeed in a way that similar bands did not. Stevie, Christine, Lindsey, Mick and John had such strong chemistry from the get go, which helped make disparate songs like the radio-ready “Say You Love Me,” the haunting “Rhiannon,” and the cheery “Monday Morning” become essential parts of one cohesive whole. The album has no real fat from start to finish, and no matter how many times I’ve played it in full over the years, I never get tired of it. With this expanded reissue, the early takes give you a nice look into the recording process, and they often sound surprisingly close to the finished versions. But it’s really the live recordings that make this reissue worth picking up, even if you already have the album. Fleetwood Mac have been a fantastic live band for a long time (and still are), and these recordings remind you that they were already a tight-knit unit after only having this lineup for a year or so. Their live show has never been an exact replica of their albums, and here we’re treated to unique live gems like an intensified “Rhiannon” from 10/25/75 and a jammed out, eight-minute “World Turning” from 10/17/75. Also included are recordings of this lineup playing some of the band’s older songs, including must-hear Lindsey Buckingham-sung versions of Peter Green-era classics “Oh Well” and “The Green Manalishi,” the latter of which the band apparently haven’t performed since the ’70s.

This is the proper deluxe reissue that The White Album has been waiting for. The reissued version in the 90's was a joke. In contrast, this reissue is FANTASTIC!
Some of the best songs in the entire Fleetwood Mac catalog are "Why" and "Spare Me A Little Of Your Love"--it is a treasure to have live versions of these gems with Stevie and Lindsey on harmony vocals.
"Get Like You Used To Be" is pure blues treasure and The Mac burn it up as a set list opener!

I agree, they did a fantastic job. I wonder if there was some hold-up in getting all the extra material together. Maybe the 5.1 mix wasn't ready back then?
Someone on Facebook suggested they should have bundled Buckingham Nicks with this reissue. That actually makes a lot of sense, considering Fleetwood Mac would have never happened without Mick hearing tracks from that album. Buckingham Nicks would have finally been on the major label that they, Stevie in particular, always wanted. It just seems like yet another missed opportunity. :distress:
I think this is the format we will see with Buckingham/Nicks. Maybe this will be the next release we get........

Okay, I forked over for the reissue (digital format) solely because I wanted to hear the early versions of the songs.
Surprisingly, I was NOT disappointed! These are not merely recordings minus overdubs but actual early takes, with scratch vocals and occasionally very different instrumental ideas. As usual, I think the final album reflects wise decisions but I have to say I am truly digging the early takes of “Over My Head” and “Sugar Daddy” in particular. On “Over My Head” we get this bright, bouncy piano riff—and for the first time I can see how Christine originally conceived it on her little honer piano. The piano part is similar to that which is used on “Heroes are Hard to Find.” I also love the variations in her voice here. It sounds like a live-in-studio take.
“Sugar Daddy”— wow! If anyone ever doubted Christine’s effectiveness as a keyboard player, they need to listen to her piano and organ work on this. Add to that her bluesy vocal in which, toward the very end of the song, her range hits lower notes than I’ve ever heard from her. The voice on this take is very much a similar, if more developed voice as the one she had on CHRISTINE PERFECT.
I like the electric piano jazz chords and frequent guitar fills on World Turning.
“Crystal” sounds so timeless in it’s barest state. Lovely.
I’ve heard all of the live stuff before except the version of Over My Head. So glad to get that material in digitally remastered form.

Yes, I wrote early take but meant early version. Hence “scratch vocals.”
On “Over My Head” I sense the piano was not an overdub but part of the original base track. The riff is so integrated into the song conception. The decision to remove it was cool (it created a lot more space) but I can also see how that piano riff was probably tied to her composition process.

I agree about the 5.1 Surround. Once again Ken Caillat does an amazing job. I hate to say it or give him credit, but he knows how to engineer quality surround. It’s really too bad they couldn’t of got him to transfer Tango to 5.1 Surround. That high res bull**** is just a waste of time. Anyways back on topic. In my opinion it’s the best collection of the 5 super deluxe releases. I love the early takes, even if the song is worse it still gives you another take and inside look to the creative process. The live stuff is excellent. I love hearing Lindsey sing and play on the songs from before he was in the band. I prefer his renditions over the originals by far. His vocals are easily an upgrade and he’s always had a way of making one guitar sound like 2. So he holds his own vs. the previous guitarists in Fleetwood Mac. So now I ask, where do they go from here? I really doubt any other FM album will get deluxed.

I'm not that impressed about Rhiannnon. My favorite is still Oklahoma 1977. Love the beginning though. "Some night you wake up and Rhiannon is right there"
Love those raw version of Crystal and ISA.

To my ears, Disc 1 sounds the same as the 2004 reissue (although the CD text says '2017').

No, I noticed it and found it absolutely bizarre, because I always thought that she was singing the melody there and they were harmonizing with her. I was thinking, "What happened to the melody line??" It was especially noticeable to me because I typically sing along with that line.
Did they really take it off? I thought perhaps two takes were recorded and they made the inexplicable choice to use one where her voice was either missing or hard to hear.

Yeah it seems as if Stevie's vocal is WAY high in the mix on all four of those songs and Christine's is pushed way back. Not sure why they chose to do that. Still, it's good we have alternate live version of Why and Rhiannon where we can hear everybody!
As far as B/N deluxe goes, that would be the only other logical step. Can't see them messing with the rest of Fleetwood Mac's catalog or any further solo work unless they released something like "Best of Fleetwood Mac Live 1971-1974" or something (which wouldn't be unwelcome).
This is only speculation, but weren't Crystal and Frozen Love played at the Oakland show where the live Over My Head was recorded? It would stand to reason that recordings of those two songs exist as well, so maybe they're holding off and sticking them on the future B/N reissue?
But then again Don't Let Me Down Again was on this reissue so maybe I'm talking out of my ass

It's excellent! Way better than the one off of LIVE. There's actually a couple live songs on this reissue that have become the definitive live versions for me (Rhiannon, Why, I'm So Afraid, World Turning, Oh Well, Don't Let Me Down Again, Over My Head, Green Manalishi). Chris and Lindsey especially are in vocal prime on these songs.

I have to admit, because of the high price tag and the fact that I could listen to most of this on Spotify already, I've avoided the remastered releases. But I bought a 5.1 system solely because I own the original DVD-A of Rumours from the early 2000s. I love that disc so much, and all the praise for the surround sound mix of "Fleetwood Mac" pushed me over the edge. Fingers crossed.
For those that have the Tusk and Mirage 5.1 mixes -- also worth the money? Less so?
Okay, I broke down and bought it -- should be arriving in a week or so.
Less so?
Yes worth every penny. I love the 5.1 mixes. I wish we could have got it with the Tango box.

I’m a little unclear about “Why” and Christine not being in the mix. I clearly hear her all throughout Midnight Special and on the snippet from the box on Amazon. Does she cut out on the box at some point?

She's not singing in the end "you don't have to give up, why is all wrong..." It's just Stevie and Lindsey but in a previous mix it was all three.

Really fun to see these reviews, the 5.1 had me ready to purchase at any cost...:) waiting for this one.
This is my fave period of the BuckNicks years...dark, but still so very fresh and exciting and so, so deep. I loved this album in real time in '75 and still consider it a masterpiece. So much so, that when Rumours came out it seemed like Part 2 and I loved it but didn't see what was exciting everyone else so much, I mean, didn't they hear this record?

First Italian review:
Fleetwood Mac - the review of "Fleetwood Mac (Deluxe)"
As it happens for many bands, also the career of Fleetwood Mac is divided into phases and periods: in this case they're mainly two. The first is the English one characterized by a rock blues sound, the second - indeed the most famous - is the most pop rock American one.
It is with this "Fleetwood Mac" of 1975, the band's tenth album (the second eponym) that begins the second phase thanks to the arrival of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. The disc - which contains historical pieces like "Landslide" and "Rhiannon" comes out today in a deluxe version of 3 discs: remastered album, outtakes collection and demo version, plus a couple of American concerts recorded in 1975.
A disc to discover or re-evaluate, a good alternative to the well known and subsequent "Rumors".

Ok this is the Midnight special version of 'Why' that is the same performance that is on the new Deluxe edition. So why does Chris's vocal sound SO much better on the new re issue? Did they just add reverb etc...or did they autotune that track for the new remaster because it's so much better now. Not that it was bad before.

There's a lot of reverb and even some echo on quite a bit of the tracks.
Autotune doesn't really make the sound better. It gives it more of a generic feel and diminishes tone quality. IMO.
Ha, this is my favorite FM album and I don't even have this yet. Maybe it's that my fandom has waned, or "I'm getting older", too. Or, I'm just waiting for the price to drop, I don't know. Well, I received my Amazon UK parcel yesterday and it was indeed smashed to bits, but fortunately the album was in a box within a box within the shipping box and is intact. We regularly order items from the UK and this box was quite a sight (won't order music from them again).
Thrilled to bits with the music, which might bump BuckVie off the currently most played list.

Fleetwood Mac: Fleetwood Mac: Deluxe Edition (Reprise)
Fleetwood Mac wasn’t entirely unknown to American rock fans when their self-titled album appeared in 1975, but the impressions people had were confused. Fleetwood Mac began in the ’60s as a British blues-rock band fronted by a brilliant guitarist, Peter Green. With his departure began continual lineup shifts with a changing cast of musicians, vocalists and songwriters. By 1975 Mac was best known as the band that sang about UFOs and the Bermuda Triangle.
But that was about to change. For Fleetwood Mac, the band added a pair of Yanks, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, and embraced the sonic perfectionism of the Los Angeles studio sound. On the resulting album, melody and harmony were brought to a platinum polish with memorable hooks and lyrics on the vagaries of love. The hits kept coming: “Over My Head,” “Rhiannon,” “Say You Love Me,” “Landslide.”
The newly issued Fleetwood Mac slipcase package contains the album on remastered vinyl as well as CD. An additional disc of “early takes” isn’t revelatory but suggests how those songs might have sounded live, shorn of some of that studio sheen and sounding more like a band together in the moment.

ALBUM REVIEW: Reissue of a classic is a must for fans
This is a simply beautiful album from Fleetwood Mac. It looks beautiful and sounds just perfect. For fans, it is a must. The band’s original 1975 self-titled album was an overwhelming smash when it was first released. It topped the album chart and sold more than five million copies in the US, thanks to classic songs like ‘Landslide’, ‘Say You Love Me’, and ‘Rhiannon’. The line up was the band’s most successful incarnation to date, comprising of Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and Christine McVie. This re-release comes as the band continues its campaign to reissue its classic albums. The collection includes newly remastered audio, rare and unreleased studio and live recordings, and more. It is available on three different formats: Deluxe, Expanded and Remastered. The deluxe edition includes a third disc with extra unreleased live recordings, including performances of ‘Landslide’, ‘Oh Well’, ‘Station Man,’ and World Turning’ among others. It also comes with a DVD, LP version of the original album and in-depth liner notes and rare photos. Reviewed by Zoe Myall

Just finished listening to the live album...
In one word: Refreshing.
Out of all the deluxe editions, this is the first one where I am truly experiencing "new" material. The live album has such a raw energy and excitement to it. I always thought that, if I could go back in time, the Tusk tour is the point in the band's history I would want to have witnessed; however, I now wish that I was alive and of age to have seen the "new" lineup in 1975. What amazes me about the live album is it gives such a clear idea as to the state FM during this moment: new songs, a sense of expanding the sonics of the band, the pride that the three Brits have in showing off the new talent from America, and a general lack of restraint (unlike the very polished performances that would only increase as the band became more popular). It is also touching to hear how Christine was really the band leader at this point. I would argue that the leader role was quickly taken over by Lindsey, most likely with no complaints from Christine. However, in 1975, Christine was the "face" of Fleetwood Mac and it was her material that really defined the sound of the band. This concert, to me, represents Christine "showing the way" for the talents of Stevie and Lindsey to be unleashed for the future. It is also so incredible to hear "Rhiannon," "Landslide, " Over My Head," "I'm So Afraid," and "World Turning" as new songs. This is without a doubt (no doubt at all) the best recorded version of "Rhiannon" we have; Stevie is really selling it and giving the audience no doubt that she belongs in this band. Lindsey's guitar playing is much more sporadic than in future tours; however, this concert hints at the true rock and roll performer and "guitarist supreme" he would become. John and Mick are incredibly tight on this recording. All of the live recordings with these deluxe editions have allowed for me to have a greater appreciation for John McVie's playing...the man is a master of his craft. And Christine...her piano and keyboard playing are stunning throughout this entire live set. As a piano player myself, I have always been drawn to Christine's work. This live recording has elevated my respect for her musicianship; the blues energy she gives in "Get Like You Used To Be," the rhythmic playing she provides in "Rhiannon," and the last minute of "Spare Me A Little Of Your Love" prove just how sophisticated and intelligent Christine McVie is as a keyboardist/pianist (not to mention her vocals throughout).
The live album is worth the price of admission here. Though I love the work on Rumours and beyond, it is nice to listen to this band without the mainstays that have so dominated their shows since 1975. Hearing the band play pre-Buckingham/Nicks material has allowed for me to focus on the actual playing that this band is capable of. I will no doubt be returning to the live set quite often.

I'm still exploring this edition. It's just so good.
The other time I saw Christine step up so much was during the BTM tour. She stole the show on that tour.
But her organ and keys on that live disk are sublime and incredible. The pace of Get Like You Used to Be is insane... not just her solo.. but after her solo during LB's guitar solo... she's killing it..

Album Reviews: Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac (Deluxe Edition), Plus Andrew Sheppard, Sue Foley, Sam Lewis
I can’t listen to Fleetwood Mac’s eponymous 1975 album without thinking of a lunch meeting I had in New York City early in the year before its release. I had arranged an interview with a folk duo called Carlson and Gailmor, whose debut LP was about to come out, and a publicist at their record company had asked for a favor: Would I mind if another fledgling duo joined us for lunch? This couple, explained the publicist, were still working on their own first album for the label and would not be expecting an interview; they wanted to come along merely to get a sense of what it was like to deal with the media and what kinds of questions they might face from journalists if their careers ultimately did take off.
I said “sure,” and the couple met us for lunch. The details of our conversation have been lost to time, but I do remember that they seemed ambitious. At any rate, we shook hands after our meal and said goodbye. In the months that followed, Carlson and Gailmor’s album flopped. Meanwhile, the tag-along couple’s LP came out in September and arrived in my mailbox. It didn’t make much of an impression on me, and it didn’t sell any better than the Carlson and Gailmor album.
But early the next year, I read some news about this southern California duo, whose names were Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks: on New Year’s Eve, they’d joined a long-lived but struggling British blues/rock band called Fleetwood Mac. It seems that the group’s Mick Fleetwood had listened to Buckingham Nicks, the pair’s album, and heard what I and many other listeners had missed. Mick was floored by Buckingham’s work, and soon he and his bandmates John and Christine McVie and were just as blown away by Nicks—and by the magic that resulted when the duo collaborated with them.
The quintet’s first album together—recorded in January and February of 1975 and released that July—is called simply Fleetwood Mac. Self-titled albums are typically debuts (and, in fact, the group’s 1968 first LP also bore that title), but the moniker was appropriate. Fleetwood Mac had been around for the better part of a decade and had issued nine previous albums, but the addition of Buckingham and Nicks had resulted in what was essentially a new band.
And what a band they were. Their “debut” album—the group’s first chart-topper, though it took 15 months to crawl to No. 1—produced three hit singles, Christine McVie’s infectious “Say You Love Me” and sublime “Over My Head”; and Stevie Nicks’s “Rhiannon,” which instantly established her as a world-class vocalist. And every one of the other eight tracks is just about as good.
Buckingham and Nicks contribute mightily, but so do the other three members, who seem to garner fresh inspiration from the new lineup. Christine McVie particularly shines, both as songwriter and vocalist. Alternating between rhythmic power pop and sweet ballads, the album overflows with rhythm, shimmering harmonies, passion, and energy. The lyrics, virtually all about romantic relationships, are fine too. (Has there ever been a more cogent couplet about the conflicted feelings that a troubled new love affair can generate than Christine McVie’s “You can take me to paradise, and then again you can be cold as ice / I’m over my head, oh, but it sure feels nice”?)
The album was remastered and rereleased in 2004 with five bonus tracks, but that was nothing compared with the reissue at hand, which includes three CDs, an LP containing the remastered original album on 180g vinyl; and an audio DVD with a 5.1 surround mix and 24/96 stereo audio of the original album and 24/96 stereo audio of its singles. There’s also an LP-sized booklet that includes lyrics, credits, photos, and an extensive essay by journalist David Wild.
In addition to remastered versions of Fleetwood Mac’s 11 tracks, the first CD includes remasters of the album’s four singles, three of which feature alternate mixes. (The fourth, “Over My Head,” is a completely different take.) The 17 tracks on disc two offer early versions of all of the album’s songs, presented in the same sequence as the released LP, plus live readings of “Rhiannon,” “World Turning,” “I’m So Afraid,” an instrumental jam, and a fine Christine McVie vehicle called “Why” (a number that first surfaced on 1973’s Mystery to Me). The 14-track third CD delivers performances from the tour that followed the album’s release. It includes six songs that appear on Fleetwood Mac as well as such earlier high points as Christine’s “Spare Me a Little” (from 1972’s Bare Trees).
If you don’t have the original record, the decision to get this reissue should be a no-brainer; and even if you have it, you shouldn’t hesitate to upgrade: the remastering and live tracks are excellent; and while the early versions are generally not quite as good as the released ones, they’re nevertheless invariably excellent and interesting. Best of all is the DVD’s surround-sound version of Fleetwood Mac, which adds immeasurably to the listening experience.
If you’re on a tight budget, be advised that you can buy an edition of this reissue that includes only the first two CDs—no concert disc, no LP, and no DVD. You might save more than 50 bucks, but you might also wind up regretting your decision, especially if you later get to hear a friend’s copy of the DVD.

It was interesting to learn in the Wild Heart deluxe release that Stevie purposely wanted Sable on Blonde to sound like Dreams. I know exactly what you mean. It's just that Get was written long before Don't Stop. So GLYUTB isn't like Don't Stop. It's the other way around.
Having said that. I think Christine's playing on GLYUTB is incredible.

It’s not like they had much “it” left anymore. None of them have great voices left, they need practically another band to do a show, and they’re relying heavily on “prerecords.” They are a far cry from who they were.

It’s not like they had much “it” left anymore. None of them have great voices left, they need practically another band to do a show, and they’re relying heavily on “prerecords.” They are a far cry from who they were.
Go ahead and try to build up what's coming by minimizing what's been destroyed. The truth is that whatever greatness Fleetwood Mac had is now gone.

And, it has been since 1982, at least as far as shows are concerned. For all the crap they get, the “Time” crew were able to do shows with just six people on stage and no backing tracks. To be sure, I have low expectations for the new lineup in that regard, too. I think it will be another choreographed mess.
The Rumours band was magic, but Fleetwood Mac has mostly felt like either a Vegas lounge act or a cover band for every tour since 1987, regardless of who was in the band. If they could have just gone out as a quintet, no backing musicians, backing vocalists, or prerecords, I might share that same sense of loss.

The Dance had backup musicians and it was absolutely magical. And the SYW tour was amazing, as were most of their tours. The Time crew that you're talking about was a lot younger. Everyone gets old and obviously when these people get older their voices are going to get shot and their playing skills aren't going to be the same as when they were in their 30s. But they still put on a great show because they had that wonderful chemistry. If they had actually played at these ages without any backup singers or musicians you probably would've been able to more obviously spot the little cracks in the performance. Stevie's singers are sometimes too loud but aside from that their backup musicians help, rather than harm. It wouldn't have been the same as when they were all in their 30s around Mirage. There's nothing wrong with needing a little help when you're 60 and 70 years old. I don't think it ever felt like a "lounge act" in recent years for performance related reasons at all. It was mostly just the fact that they were touring over and over again behind no new music.

It never felt like a "lounge act" to me. To me, A Fleetwood Mac show felt like a thrilling, wonderful, unforgettable experience.

To each their own. I never felt it was “magic” with the extra musicians, and I don’t think they needed them. They say it’s to fill out the sound, but it really leaves the shows void of personality, character, or raw energy, and age has nothing to do with it. Willie and Dylan still do it.

I guess you guys don't know what I mean. I meant the sound of the instruments mostly. Get like it used to be has the drum shuffle, the exact same guitar sound, and piano banging sound Don't Stop. Christine plays her shuffle the same on all her shuffle songs: Get Like, Don't Stop, Stop Messing. Onstage, it gives those songs a similar atmosphere. Her piano shuffle is a replication of the style of Sonny Thompson, who cowrote with Freddie King. Chris was listening to King a lot in the old days.
