View Full Version : Tango vocals

the Wikipedia entry for Tango in the Night has this section:

When Nicks did go to the studio, she often felt unmotivated. "I can remember going up there and not being happy to even be there...I guess I didn’t go very often..." With vocal sessions taking place in Buckingham's master bedroom, Nicks would ask for some brandy, drink a few shots, and eventually run through "four or five songs" intoxicated. Because of this, Buckingham had to remove most of Nicks' vocals. As a result, Nicks is almost entirely absent on the majority of Buckingham and McVie's tracks.[14] To make ends meet, Buckingham recorded some of the vocals himself using a Fairlight, an early sampling synthesizer.[15] For example, on "When I See You Again", some of the vocals weren't even sung by Nicks. Instead, Buckingham assembled the vocal track by taking words and sentences that weren't hers, and then tampered with them until they somewhat resembled Nicks' voice. After the middle eight, the rest of the song is sung in Buckingham's normal register. [5]

I think whoever put this is got the song wrong. It seems doubtful to me that the vocals on Wassamatta Baby aren't Stevie but are his computer generated faux Stevie vocals. He may well have cobbled it together using bits and pieces from various takes, but clearly they are referring to a different song on the album, one of his or Christine's where as they say she is actually missing on most of them, and often when it sounds like her it's really tweaked versions of LB's own vocals.

But which song are they referring to that they mistakenly referred to as WISYA?

You'll find it hard for someone to take credit
for those vocals.

There is someone out there who takes a LOT of liberties in editing Stevie's/FM's wiki pages. There was a whole entry (and maybe still is) for a Stevie solo album that never existed.

Yes, it was the "Mirror Mirror" album entry, and while I was investigating Wikipedia to see how to correct them I happened to discover that much of those entries were done by WelcomeChris, I wouldn't be surprised if this was also a complete fabrication done by him.

OK but back to the original question-- despite any sh&t stirrers in the audience messing with Wikipedia, it is true that Lindsey has said on more than one occasion that he had to very much construct 'performances' from Stevie-- by literally cutting words or lines from all different takes and kluge-ing them together to sound like a single performance of the whole song. And that most of what sounds like her on background on his and Chris's songs was done with studio magic by him, altering his own voice digitally enough to make it sound like she is there in the mix.

I'm trying to figure out which are the most egregious examples of this-- whoever wrote the Wikipedia entry is wrong-- there are no vocals on Wassamatta baby that sound like Stevie that aren't actually Stevie- although you can tell in several sections where a vocal was taken from a different take and pasted in. And unlike one article said, LB doesn't sing the end of WISYA because she lost her voice but because he was trying to make a kinda drab song more interesting-- and having the male voice come in adds a totally different dynamic to the song (which totally works in my opinion).

She does sing the "can't disguise" on Little Lies, but probably nothing else. Anything sounding vaguely Stevie-ish is likely Lindsey's handiwork.

I never thought the grunts on Big Love sounded remotely like Stevie, but I guess I can see how very casual listeners might guess it was a woman and not Lindsey mucking with his own voice.

But I don't hear anything where I really think it's Stevie when it's not.

This is a fascinating thread. While I may not believe all of it there is circumstantial evidence of a remote possibility.
Stevie was there briefly before rehab. This was one song she recorded then.
Lindsey was a crafty SOB on Tango. Everyone was asking who the female grunting was until he spilled the beans it was Lindsey speeding up his voice.
Stevie was absent during most of if not all of the Tango in the night sessions. We learn that even if Mick's first book even Christine lashed out at Stevie for not being there when Stevie complained about not having involvement with the album.
I think its a very real possibility Lindsey's vocals were added to the song when Stevie was not there. They needed her songs and she was not there.
Last piece of evidence is the Oooh my love from the Tango sessions. OMG I never heard a more out of it Stevie. She is singing like she is bored to death. It her worst singing demo ever. It could be the intense pressure on Lindsey to complete the project and not start over with Stevie drama. I totally believe Stevie drank heavily before singing in the Tango sessions. Just listen to Oooh my love. She sounds out of it and drunk.
Remember the band is not going to talk about what sad shape Stevie was in during 1986. We just get bits and pieces. This could be another piece. Maybe an exaggeration but I don't think totally out of the realm of possibilities. Now I am curious and need to listen to WISYA really close. From the first time I heard the song I thought all the wassa matter babies were a bit odd and too much. Even the Rolling Stone review of the album which was mostly positive made fun of that part.
GOSH, can you imagine the book Lindsey could write if he wanted to tell the truth.

If she keeps bashing him like she has....he just might. I would rather the call it quits as a band at this point and Lindsey write that book. Let there be another duo album instead. I've had it with her antics. And before you S fans all chime in, not more then a year ago I was the biggest fan, but she has squandered that very quickly.

I have to admit it's taken me a little longer than

It's hard to keep the flame a fire when the last
good thing she's done is over twenty years past.
Unless one counts SoundStage.

Very true. Lindsey would never go there especially at this point in their career. Lindsey is not a gossiper. When he left we were all very bitter because he was vague and beat around the bush for his leaving. After reading Mick's latest book and some things that have come to light from the Tango sessions, I completely understand why he could not tour or be around Mick and Stevie. Lindsey is very private. He has never given his side of the story as bluntly Mick and Stevie have the night of the big blowout and Christine's house.

I received these anonimous messages on Tumblr on this topic (definitely not creepy at all):

I am aware of the confusion regarding the WISYA's vocals, so I'll provide you with the quote I used. On “When I See You Again,” Nicks’ voice almost crumbles and shatters into atoms. “Stevie was the worst she’s ever been,” Buckingham told Uncut in 2013. “I didn’t recognize her...I had to pull performances out of words and lines and make parts that sounded like her that weren’t her.”

Btw, you can find that quote on Pitchfork's review of the Tango in the Night Deluxe set.

Thanks for sharing. That quote is really really scary but not surprising. Its also no surprise that Stevie's management forced her to seek help.
Even though the treatment was successful, Stevie left Betty Ford early and "ran away." That's usually a red flag that someone is going to relapse. When Stevie returned to the band for the end of Tango (before release), I can see why Lindsey could not dare tour with such insanity.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, the demo of Oooh My Love sounds so odd because you can tell Stevie is so out of it. One of my favorite photos is the one with Stevie and Lindsey during the Tango sessions. Lindsey is looking at Stevie and Stevie is without makeup (or very litte), her hair a mess, she looks like she has been up all night from a party and hung over, smoking a long Kool Mild 100 cigarette. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and that one definitely is.

I find Stevie's vocals on WISYA to be heartbreakingly beautiful, capturing where she was in her imperfect life and career. However, I can't deal with lyrics like and she stares at the stairs ooh there are so many things to stare at these days - so I never listen to it.

I justify it that way, too. I really enjoy WISYA and the ache in her heart. Further, I've never been as hard on her for her lyrics as I have the other two. Oy...

Having said that, I don't listen to FMac for the lyrics. Thank goodness for that!

As the person who contacted Sister Nightroad says, the article says this:

On “When I See You Again,” Nicks’ voice almost crumbles and shatters into atoms. “Stevie was the worst she’s ever been,” Buckingham told Uncut in 2013. “I didn’t recognize her...I had to pull performances out of words and lines and make parts that sounded like her that weren’t her.”

Here's the thing -- this sentence is from the writer, expressing their own opinion:
On “When I See You Again,” Nicks’ voice almost crumbles and shatters into atoms

They then went back to an older interview Lindsey did with someone else and in which he talked about the overall issues dealing with Stevie during the making of that album:
“Stevie was the worst she’s ever been,” Buckingham told Uncut in 2013. “I didn’t recognize her...I had to pull performances out of words and lines and make parts that sounded like her that weren’t her.”

By kluging those two pieces together the writer makes it appear as if Lindsey's comment was made in response to being asked about WISYA specifically. He was not. He was asked about working with her on everything.

He has said many times before that she was not available to work on either his or Chris's songs. There's the infamous story from Mick in his book that when Stevie did show up at one point she was mad she was not heard on any of their songs, and Chris said to her that she had wanted Stevie on the songs but Stevie had not been there. They then came to a truce and Stevie recorded some bits like "tell me lies" on Little Lies. But Lindsey had already done his work on those songs to try and make it sound like she was in the mix on other parts as well because they didn't know they'd get anything more from her.

My original question was about the claim that in one song you can hear that Lindsey has tweaked his own voice to sound like her and then after the middle 8 you hear him go back to his own voice. I'd love to know what song that is.

Whew.

This is just a guess, but could he be talking about "Family Man" -- that part after the guitar solo, around the 2:20 or 2:30 mark -- where it sounds like Stevie mumbling "am what I am what I am what I am" out into infinity?

IMO at that time she was so out of it on drugs, carried away with herself and fame that her voice had morphed into a caricature of itself. Like an older actress who's performances are way over the top. Think Carol Burnett's Norma Desmond and I know I'm dating myself. This is Stevie's voice back then. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTKhw-v5h2I

I am not John but for me what I hate is *how* people talk about her, not that they do not like her. Many of you try to see just how much of an asshole you can be, who can be King or Queen Jerk. A lot of you think it is cute to one up the next one. The fact that a moderator participates in the same way does not help. It is only cute to a few.

As for John not leaving, I wrestle with the same thing. But then I think WHY should WE have to leave? We love the music --- all 5. I personally do not care for how Lindsey acts but I do not think I have ever posted anything as vile about him as people have about Stevie (I am talking me, not other fans). I don't do it because I am a naive "snowflake" as conservative bullies like to say, I don't do it because it is worthless. Tearing someone like Stevie down obviously makes a core group feel better, but in the end, it just brings negativity to this board.

Not sure about JohnL, but some people actually attach their ego to a celebrity. So when you speak your opinion of that said celeb, you're also speaking to their ego (or lack thereof) , too. I imagine this happens a lot with Stevie fans that dress up like her or pretend to be her.

It happens a lot. I'd dealt with this somewhat when I was younger. My obsession w/ FMac wasn't appreciated by my metal friends in the 80's. And where are all those hair bands now?? hMMM? lol

I actually love Stevie's Tango work. It's different and knowing what I know now about what she was going through, I applaud the production choices Lindsey made on her work. I can hear the pain. That's a wonderful thing for me.

It's her current work that's so bland and boring to me. Doing old demos from a time when she was in better voice and had a lot of pain. Those songs had meant something to me. Her current versions just don't cut it, IMO. I would much rather she do another album. No Dave Stewart, however. Maybe, work w/ LB again or Ken. If you want to have a specific sound, find a good producer that knows your strengths.

But the world is never going to agree with you, so(to me anyway) it's a pointless waste of energy, getting all up in arms over something you can't control. I mean, who cares what they think?

When I started college, I quickly realized how dorky I sounded, being a huge FM fan. So I actually walked away from them for a few years, pretending to like cool bands. lol

Well, I think everything she does now is just going through the motions. She's a rich star, with a matching ego. And she believes all her "yes men". She's become the Muhammad Ali of the bovidae family.:D

Tiptoeing back on-topic...

I can't hear anywhere on WISYA where Lindsey is pretending to be Stevie, so I agree that the Wikipedia entry writer is conflating different sources and drawing the wrong conclusion. But there are clearly other places where he has treated his voice to achieve a Stevie-like effect. Obviously the Big Love 'love grunts', but also the descending 'am what I am' middle section of Family Man, which sounds very Stevie-like at the start but reveals itself to be Lindsey as it heads down the register.

I've also never been really sure about that vocal collage part in the fade-out of Everywhere, which could be constructed from fragments sung by Stevie, but could equally be made from Lindsey or even Christine.

I have two possible theories for the phantom Stevie voice in a couple of places on the BuckVie album.

1. Lindsey deliberately altered vocals sung by himself or by Christine to sound "like Stevie." Why would he do such a thing? Maybe as a tribute to Stevie, maybe because he thought it sounded good, or more likely, just because he can.

or

2. We fans are so used to hearing the three voices together, our subconscious minds fill in the missing "Stevie vocal." I personally don't hear Stevie anywhere on the album, so my question to those of you who DO hear her is: do you think you hear Christine singing anywhere on 'Say You Will'?

I would add to #1 though that maybe Lindsey did it because as much as he may dislike Stevie personally, professionally her voice will always be in his head... what I mean is, she really was his first singing partner, and in all those early years her voice was soooo amazing, and she could harmonize like nobody else and they were a duo, that the sound of her harmony is just ingrained in his brain of how things should sound.

It could also be that having Stevie on a song makes it more commercial-- the more one of his or BV's songs sound like "FM" meaning all 3 of their voices, the more he may think it's likely to get more play. He knows how the business works...

Tiptoeing back on-topic...

I've also never been really sure about that vocal collage part in the fade-out of Everywhere, which could be constructed from fragments sung by Stevie, but could equally be made from Lindsey or even Christine.

Yes... this song sounds like she's all over the choruses... especially on the the repeat of "I wanna be with you everywheeeerrrrrre"

I think Lindsey took credit for the "am what I am what I am what I am..." thing in "Family Man" too, but to my ear it sounds way too much like Stevie to be a studio trick. Someone who is extremely knowledgeable about all things Stevie told me it's actually her, and he's usually right. He says it was a Lindsey-led conspiracy to try to erase her from the album, and Warner wasn't having it.

I always thought I could hear Stevie on "Mystified" too, in some parts. It sucks that it's probably not her though.

Mick's book is probably wrong about Stevie's vocals being layered into "Everywhere", I think the ghost-writer did bad research and meant "Little Lies" instead. The background vocals on "Everywhere", like "Mystified", are a shimmering jumble of sounds, you can't specifically hear her. If she's there at all, it's still not the pronounced type of vocal like on "Little Lies" that would warrant a half page in his crappy book.

Stevie's accounts are troubling though. At one point she was blaming her absence from TITN on klonopin, but if she started that drug in 1986 she wouldn't have been on it long enough to cause the type of lethargy and not giving a **** that she was describing. That came later IMO, with BTM and OSOTM.

I always believed the Stevie part on Family man was added after Stevie made a fuss about not being on the album. I think its an obvious layer added late in the process.

Then I think you need to give "Family Man" another listen. While I have no doubt Lindsey did some trickery, I'm absolutely convinced that the genesis of the "am what I am what I am what I am...." bridge started with a creaky Stevie vocal which he then manipulated. It just needed to be one line, really- then he just played with it to make it repeat and change key.

I'm also in full agreement with my well-informed friend that Lindsey was insanely jealous of Stevie's solo career and would have gladly excluded her from everything, were it not for Warner DEMANDING a big Stevie single and visibility in videos.

C'mon now, its ok to be a huge Stevie fan but facts are facts.
While her band was in the studio recording Tango, Stevie went on a drug binged tag along tour with Petty in Australia. She then toured herself and eventually ended up in rehab only to emerge when Tango was almost finished.
NO WAY any of this is Lindsey's fault or making. He actually handled the situation pretty well considering what he had to deal with. Was he jealous of her solo career? Probably ......but that does not explain or justify her absence from the Tango sessions.
Stevie herself stated the times she did show up, she was late and it aggravated Lindsey and probably the rest of the band. Christine had a right to lash out at Stevie for wanting to include her on tracks but guess what.....Stevie was not there.

I thought similar to others re: Family Man -- that "am what i am, what i am, what i am" descension -- definitely Lindsey doing some "Stevie twisting" on his own vocals, and he did it in a 'cards on the table' way - showed the listener how it's his voice at first and then it gets gradually altered.

I remember feeling concern when I first heard "When I See You Again." I was a 19 year old college kid, listening to Tango on cassette in my dorm room. I was a big fan of the band even then and remember thinking, worried, "Christ, if this was the best they could get out of her, she ain't well." The vocals reminded me of the weak/fragile voice on some of "Rock A Little" (the title track, and "I Sing for the Things") the year before, but even weaker, and there had been a story or two in the news about her addiction/rehab struggles.

Just wow. This board is amazing in that you learn every day how wonderfully different all of us humans are. We can listen to the same thing and have opposite opinions. To say that RAL had any "rock" is a joke. It is pure pre-programmed synth pop of the worst kind. Its drum machines rolling with programmed bass, etc. Rock stations kept Stevie nicks in heavy rotation with Bella Donna and Wild Heart even with the disco Stand Back. But RAL was just too much and many rock stations never really played very much from RAL. OSOTM is a back to roots Stevie Nicks. I just don't get if anyone is a Stevie fan how they could not like the album. Unlike RAL, Stevie wrote almost ALL of the songs. But more important the songs are autobiographical and some of her best writings. Probably her biggest rocker Long Way To Go is so good. Nothing similar on RAL at all. Real drums, real bass, real guitar, and a perfect song about scorned love and intense drug addiction and merged together the way only Stevie can.
When I drove home from the mall with my new cassette of OSOTM, all I kept thinking was WELCOME BACK STEVIE. Her voice was strong. Her writing was brilliant again and goodbye to empty pop songs and drum machines!!!!!!! OSOTM also has REAL piano something RAL never had (except for HAWAFY).
Stevie can be cryptic, scornful, and very honest in her writings. I never could get into the Stevie who is working the crisis hotline asking politely for someone to talk to her so she can cheer them up. That was not the Stevie that I knew. I mean really? You can break dance to Sister Honey. RAL was a totally different artist than Stevie Nicks. I do understand there are those who love this but to me it was just so annoying to see an artist so out of control that songs had to be brought in with 5 different producers to record songs that are written by B list song writers. I love the autobiographical Stevie because I somehow spiritually relate to her songs. And that my friend is why RAL is the only record from my Nicks/Mac/McVie collection that I never upgraded to CD. About 10 years ago, I was in a thrift store and I saw the RAL cassette for $1. I still had a stereo with a cassette player HA HA ;). I actually debated if I should buy it but passed.
Having said all that.... are there bad songs on OSOTM? Yes of course but there are far more many of them on RAL. Are there good songs on RAL? Yes but its frustrating because songs like I Cant Wait, I Sing for things, The Nightmare, and No Spoken word had huge potential but got lost in mid 80s synth pop. However there is no comparison in album quality IMHO. No comparison at all. While OSTOM is a good album its far from bad. Not only do I think RAL is Stevie's worst album but probably one of the worst albums of the entire 80s decade. In some ways I suppose RAL is like Red Rocks. Its so bad, its good? ;)

RAL didn't sell as many copies as BD or WH, but in terms of radio play, it did just as well as WH. In fact, "Talk to me" charted higher than "Stand Back" on both the hot 100, and the rock chart.
Her presence on rock radio started declining after TOSOTM.
In 1989, "Rooms on fire" peaked at #16 on the Hot 100(pop) chart, but hit #1 on the Rock chart.
"Long way to go" peaked at #11 on the rock chart.
Even though TOSOTM peaked at #10, it dropped off the album charts rather quickly and it only sold Gold status(500,000 copies) initially, and took a few years to be certified platinum, while RAL peaked at #12, it was certified platinum in it's first 4 weeks, and stayed in the top 20 for 13 weeks, despite peaking at #12. It also finished as #44 on the year end chart, while OSOTM finished at #89 for the yearly sales.
The lack of radio play after "Rooms on fire" and "Long way to go," caused sales to drop dramatically.
When "Timespace" was released in 1991, the lead single "Sometimes(it's a bitch)" stalled at #56 on the Hot 100, but still charted at #7 on the rock charts.

You took my statement too literal. I mean this album has the consensus of what most people like about Stevie. The songs personally written about scorned love affairs and autobiographical tales about her life vague and direct at times, her raspy but solid voice.
IMHO, OSOTM has it all almost Bella Donna like in those regards. I.E. meaning her writing is so good on the album and the songs are about her life... something that got left out on the previous album. IMHO the album is full of class and probably her most revealing album about her life ever. Long Way To Go and Escape from Berlin are probably her most direct to the point songs ever. She does not beat around the bush. Songs like Ghosts are pure Stevie telling the world how her music is her husband and that she lives in the past too much. The album is an open book into her life. I think its amazing. In some weird way I think the klonopin let her reveal too much and say things she may not have told the world before. Its also her last good writings before klonopin turned out the lights.
So that is why I don't understand the hate many have for the album. Some only look at pop chart success... I get that. But the depth of her songs on this album hit home for me. Are there songs I don't like on the album... YES! Cry Wolf and Still Miss Someone are duds IMHO. Can you imagine if Running Through the Garden or another one her her classics were added instead? So I am talking about the context of what most of Stevie fans like about her... the magic, the voice, the brilliant writing. I think the album has it all. To quote Stevie... she was on a very creative roll when writing the album. I also love Street Angel too. I get the feeling that some don't like it because of the lack of commercial success. I never judge an album that way.
To give an analogy. Its like someone saying.. I LOVE Fleetwood Mac but I hate the white album. That's cool and fine but isn't the white album classic Fleetwood Mac? And of course there are Mac fans out there that don't care for the white album which is fine. But the album has such a traditional Mac sound and characteristic of the band, I just would find it confusing. But of course that is what makes us fans so special. We all like different things. And that is a GOOD thing! :)
I like the music too. Anytime Rick Marotta drums, its going to be a good song! I would have loved to have seen the Heartbreakers play as a group on the album instead of just a few on Whole Lotta Trouble. I also would rearrange some of the tracking. Stevie must have been very proud of the album doing a record 5 new songs on the tour: Rooms on Fire, Alice, Juliet, Whole Lotta Trouble, Two Kinds of Love. Its weird because I understand Stevie when she says this was her magical album. I feel the magic and that is strange to say. I like some of her albums better but there is little magic there like on OSOTM. Some spell she sent on this album captured me

I love a lot of songs on TOSOTM, but most of side two killed the album for me (Juliet, Cry Wolf, Fire Burning, even Alice). I actually like I Still Miss Someone... there's a sadness and wistfulness in her voice during that song that I find endearing. I also agree with MacFan that Stevie really bears her soul on this album- Rooms on Fire, Long Way to Go, Doing the Best I Can, Ghosts, and especially Ooh My Love sound so confessional and reveal a lot about Stevie.

Stevie said in an interview that this album was her father's least favorite by her... he had to have said that before Street Angel came out LOL! Anyway, I bet he was referring more to that period in Stevie's life than the album itself, but who knows. And now, she doesn't sing any songs from this album anymore live, which is too bad. I would love to hear Rooms on Fire again, along with Long Way to Go, Ooh My Love, and a stripped down version of Doing the Best I Can (I love the song in spite of the horrible production, starting with that hilariously over the top piano pounding when she sings "I was silent, I was locked away...")

Even though you are very critical of Stevie and I'm a Stevie fanatic, we both agree that Bella Donna is pretty much perfection. And yeah I'm not very fond of The Other Side of the Mirror either; for me there's just 2 songs that are good, 'Ooh My Love' and 'Rooms on Fire'. It's such a tired, crappy sounding album full of completely forgettable songs. OSOTM and Street Angel were Stevie' s nadir and honestly none of her solo albums after Rock a Little really rise above merely very good. Some might say that makes me a poor Stevie fanatic but whatever.

Anyway, this has gone way off topic.
