View Full Version : Stevie Nicks is a distraction Fleetwood Mac cannot afford...

In the interest of fairness...

Stevie:

- Says there's no money in new music so refuses to make a new album

- Won't get out of bed to rehearse until after 3pm

- Calls Lindsey 'Mr Useless'

We all know that Buckingham/McVie was supposed to be the new Mac album. They could be touring behind it now as a group. So Ms Nicks's attitude is holding the group back from moving on.

I am at a total loss of any kind of explanation. The only thing I can think of is, perhaps, Stevie is wrapping up her solo career and is seeking to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist. Otherwise, I have absolutely no idea. They could have been on their second or third Fleetwood Mac album by now since the reformation of the the five fireflies in 2014. I still hold hope the upcoming Buckingham solo project slated for early 2018 morphs into the last great Mac album followed by the Farewell Tour. In these strange times, who can say? The world needs a great Fleetwood Mac album, especially now. Yes, I love Buckingham McVie; though, imagine if it was a double album with all five members. What's baffling is there's no explanation from the band.

I love Stevie, but this has been so frustrating to me.

You miss Christine. Christine comes back. Now you don't want to do an album with all 5 members. I understand you want to tour with 24K but you don't want to do an album at all because you say no one will buy it.

But you will do a solo album that won't sell as much as a Mac album would. The biggest frustration is that she wants to tour with the Mac. So lets just go out do the same songs and make millions from us fans, but don't give us new music. I still love her and follow her career but it's not quite the same following this past year.

So the sleeping during the day thing has been what she does since what...1974? This is not a newflash to the members of FM or anyone else. The Mr. Useless comment is being taken way out of context in my opinion and is nothing worse than he has said or done to her in the past. And I suspect that she is just truly over the control freak in the studio so doesnt want to record with him anymore.

I guess she had me fooled for awhile. I thought she really showed Christine McVie a lot of respect when Christine retired. But, her attitude and comments over the past several years have really eroded my interest in her. (sans WH and BD remasters... I obsess over those albums because they are just so damn good)

In my opinion, her ignorance is quite staggering. It's not just the useless comment. Her comments about making money in music, and growing old, and body shaming people her age tell me that she has no idea what it would be like to live in a world without mega money and a staff and posse always telling you how amazing you are.

She's lost her mind for making some of the comments that she has. Mr. Useless? The guy that got you in the band that made you the pseudo diva you are today is useless??? The guy that told an already famous band that he's not joining unless Stevie joins too?? Bitch please, have several seats and shut the hell up. You are so full of yourself.

Continue to have people write for you and do another solo album. Collaborate with some young artists and/or soundtrack (the last one was beautiful). And just stop talking. STOP TALKING. Nobody gives a damn that you can't wake up at a reasonable hour to work with the band that got you there. STOP TALKING ABOUT LINDSEY SO MUCH IF YOU DON'T WANT TO WORK WITH HIM. Next time someone wants to interview you, DECLINE!!

and that's just HOW I FEEL... pun intended.

I believe this topic was beat to death several months ago when we all finally realized Stevie was not going to go into the studio with the Mac. I admit I was shocked she declined. She was always there for the Mac. But I called out her outrageous and false statements about why she did not join the Mac in the studio. It was bitter for me because the miracle of Christine coming back to the band made me dream of one final Mac album. However, I have accepted this and love the Buck/McVie album although I would have preferred a Mac album. Stevie's latest comments reveal she is jealous or not ok that Lindsey and most of the band went on without her. I also strongly believe if you decline to record with your band then you have officially left the band. I don't understand why she only wants to tour. She has one foot in and one foot out of the band. Its not right
Just imagine if Lindsey said "Stevie was Miss Useless back then. I stayed home, practiced guitar and developed our music career. She just cleaned toilets while I worked on music. Lindsey would be called out for being so harsh. So I think her statement was wrong even though she meant it as a joke. Lindsey worked so hard and that is why he was asked to join the Mac and they made it in music. She is not ok with this latest Lindsey adventure and she is using code language to say it.

What irks me the most is how she talked during 16 years about Christine's absence and how much she missed her, and how she reached to her when she wanted to come back, but once she does, and Christine wants to make new music, her hate towards Lindsey prevented her from helping her so-called friend. Forget Lindsey, what she did to Christine is what bothers me the most.

Like I said before I read your comment :D what angers me the most is her attitude towards Christine. You wanted her to come back, she did and how do you pay her? You refused to work with her on her new material, only because you want to be the boss around Lindsey.

Pathetic, and the only thing you're showing here is that you're still in love with him. Because she is. She dumped him 40 years ago and she still wants him around her to worship her. Not anymore, because he has Christine now.

Stevie DID take a lot of time off from the band, when she quit from 1991-97, and during the extended break the band took from 2004-2009, in which she didn't do anything new. I think her creative well dried up.

Stevie wants to have her cake and eat it. Be in the band but not do any of the risky, difficult stuff. She may well have had very valid reasons for not contributing to what was clearly meant to be a group album - and of course there will undoubtedly be things happening within the band that we don't know about - but as many of us have observed, this is holding the band back when there is really not much time left for them to make any new musical work.

It's poignant and frustrating to listen to the sentiments expressed in 'Carnival Begin' and 'On With The Show' when both of those songs were obviously written for a Mac album and would only make proper sense within the context of Fleetwood Mac.

I really wish that they had been able to persuade Stevie to contribute. But it seems crazy for the band to continue touring, all the while trying to pretend that it's business as usual. The rest of the band want to strike out and make new music, and not just be a 'heritage' band playing the old stuff. Christine wants it all - how much does Stevie want?

MoonSister75
08-16-2017, 04:38 PM
Personally, I accept Fleetwood Mac as it is, the good and the bad, the dark and the light. The music, the shows, the solo work, the absence of regular albums. I don't blame any one member of the band. I see a difficult dynamic with 2 ex-couples, 3 men, 2 women. To me, it just mirrors life, and the difficulties that we all experience in relationships, and that comes through in the music. I think it's amazing they have got this far. Christine needed 16 years away to come back with the enthusiasm that she now has.

I appreciate what music we do have, and I'm not expecting anything from any of them if they don't want to do it.

But that's just me, and I realise other fans will feel differently and feel frustration and disappointment. In a perfect world we'd have regular new albums with all 5, but the world isn't perfect and neither is the band or the people in it.

Stevie is such an easy target for all the blame and anger, but I can not see how the other 4 are totally faultless. We just don't know what is going on behind the scenes, and I wish everyone wasn't so quick to judge.

You REALLY think that it's not a problem that she doesn't even want to wake up until 3:00 PM and that the rest of the band should just have to deal with that abnormal schedule from her?

And Stevie thinks everyone is a control freak. Not just Lindsey. She's told stories about Don Henley making her do her songs over and over and over until he liked it, she called Kenny Loggins a "slave driver", compared Fleetwood Mac to the army, talked about how harsh Jimmy Iovine was and plenty more. She's overdramatic and has a victim complex. Everything is always everyone else's problem, never her own. The only time she's ever happy in the studio is if she's going solo.

People care what happened in FM during 1991-97?

I didn't realize FM did anything as band from 2004-2009.

Lindsey Buckingham left the band before they were going on tour. Christine left the band "for good" right after they became somewhat relevant again.

Taking a snooze from FM tours that played such notable venues as Konocti Harbor in the early 90's is hardly comparable.

I don't know if her creative well dried up. I think she was doing what she wanted, the way she's doing now.

I appreciate nostalgia, but when it takes people to the point that they are angrily slinging mud about Stevie Nicks because she doesn't want to participate in a band that stopped being a band in 1987, it's a little nuts. Meanwhile, Buckhingham/McVie has provided a perfectly lovely album and tour, so the anger is that there's no album with some Stevie vocals layered on leading to a greatest hits tour with 2, maybe 3, max of new songs?

The only thing I can think of is, perhaps, Stevie is wrapping up her solo career and is seeking to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist.

You make a very valid point that I hadn't thought of. Could Stevie be seeking a SOLO induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to join the ranks of John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Peter Gabriel, Jimmy Page, Michael Jackson, and more? There are many MEN who have been inducted both with their bands AND solo. She would be one of the few, if any, women. Interesting thought.

I'm most frustrated with the band's indifference -- and Stevie's blatant hatred -- towards the internet. I take Stevie's 3pm comment with a grain of salt. Same with the money comments. If she wanted to be there, she'd be there as required. I believe her that it's boring to sit there when she can't contribute instrumentally and would rather be pursuing her own projects. I just wish the band showed some interest in the untapped resource of the internet.

I feel that it really is the ghost of the past that Stevie is living in. Her duet with Harry Styles went viral, most of the top singer/songwriters today -- Adele, Taylor Swift, Lorde, Lana Del Rey, to name just a few -- consider her an inspiration... The internet could do a lot for her and FM. Imagine if the band used the internet to promote their work. I think just a little fan interaction now and then would work wonders. The streaming issue is real but people will always see Fleetwood Mac live and their work continues to touch people of all generations. People who discover their work through streaming are more inclined to buy their albums than people who never hear them or hear of them at all.

Stevie:

- Is perfectly correct that there is no money in new music. It's hard enough for young musicians let alone legacy acts...but she's wrong to say that's a reason not to make music. She SHOULD make new music and write new songs FOR THE JOY OF IT. And because she respects her "friend" Christine McVie.

- Stays awake until 5 am. She has only slept four hours when it comes to 9 am. I don't blame her for not wanting to rehearse until she's had her rests, especially if she has been up all night writing new songs for the tour (I doubt it but hey stranger things have happened).

- Lindsey IS useless at anything other than music. It's a fact. She respects his craft but rightly acknowledges he has never done anything but music. He has not waited tables or cleaned restaurants or worked a regular job or studied at university. SHE HAS DONE ALL THESE THINGS.

Actually, Lindsey also studied for a time at university.... and neither graduated.

He in fact did work some regular jobs, which others have pointed out. He held a telemarketing job-- for about as long as Stevie held her dental assistant job, I would point out. And he has had a dual career both in music and in creating and managing quite a nice portfolio of properties for decades now, buying and selling real estate in and around LA. Some people were in rehab instead.

See how that works? Anyone can throw mud.

She worked at most a couple of years of their career (if that) at a series of menial jobs to make money that she didn't last terribly long at and wasn't particularly good at. My heart does not break for her for having to work a couple of weeks (her dental assistant job) or a few months (waitressing) at real jobs. He took gigs playing (he toured with the Everly Brothers for one) in addition to working out all their music.

She whined about having to be in the studio at Sound City for 12 hours a day making their first album. See, I did it again.

I love her, but she's not a saint, and she's not the most objective at telling their history.

She was a dental assistant for a little amount of time, about as a long as Lindsey was a telemarketer. They both painted houses for a little. Mostly she worked as a waitress and Lindsey got music gigs. But I'll not tell it. Poor Stevie.

She was a dental assistant for a little amount of time, about as a long as Lindsey was a telemarketer. They both painted houses for a little. Mostly she worked as a waitress and Lindsey got music gigs. Richard Dashut's assistant Stacy once gave some information about their job situation: https://twitter.com/Stacy_B/status/633739041502949376

I've never heard that Stevie was working painting houses, just Lindsey.

I thought the story ws that they, along with Richard, were painting the studio... or some part of the studio complex... didn't Richard mention this on his original blog??

Stevie:

- Calls Lindsey 'Mr Useless'
Did she really? When was that? Oh my goodness.

It's sad that because of her own doing, she's become such a joke to me. Not saying I don't love a lot of her music and always will, but the person....the person has become insufferable!

It was both of them. Richard Dashut said that's how they met. He said Stevie was covered in paint.

I still think it was the studio they were painting, not houses.

Discuss...

Mr Useless? Is she having a laugh? He's the one that has kept the band together over the years, with not just his vocals and song writing but being the main producer as well.

Without Lindsey we wouldn't have the Fleetwood Mac we know today.

This 'Mr Useless' thing has been taken WAY out of context and it is extremely petty and childish that people are using it as a way of criticising Stevie. She was talking about the early 70s when Lindsey didn't contribute financially and didn't work. She was not calling him useless now.

STOP THIS, IT'S BORING.

Half right.
I agree she was joking and trying to be funny. But Lindsey was working. He was busting his ass every day playing guitar and writing music. It was his guitar playing that landed them in Fleetwood Mac and made them superstars.
Just imagine if Lindsey said.... I worked on our music all day while Stevie was out scrubbing toilets. She was Ms. Useless back in those days.
EVERYONE would go NUTS and be bashing Lindsey.
I get what you are saying but to trivialize what Lindsey was doing she should appreciate every day of her life. Thank goodness Lindsey had the time to practice his guitar and write music. And it was noble that his girlfriend went out to work to support him.

Spot on.

She should be able to get away with it. Because "that's our ditzy Stevie".

Bullsh*t! Just because she's a ditz doesn't mean she shouldn't be held accountable, like a normal person.

You're right, James it is boring...
And IMO she's using the phrase " Mr Useless" as a term of endearment.
I can imagine any wife of 40 years saying.."Oh you know Mr Useless"
about their husbands DIY efforts...

Hey, she knows fully well that if it wasn't for Lindsey then she wouldn't be in Fleetwood Mac BUT my point is that she didn't mean it in a nasty way. I'm pretty sure most people know that but they're turning it into something it's not just as an excuse to ONCE AGAIN attack Stevie.

i hear what you are saying James, but i think you all are taking this way too serious. don't think people are really attacking her about this one - just having tons of fun with mr useless comment cos it's hilarious. joking ya know?? :woohoo:

now if people are trying to say that Stevie and Lindsey don't throw digs at each other any chance they get and that everything they say about each other including this are just cute jokes and terms of endearment i got some bridges i can sell ya all! :D

I think it all boils down to:
There are Stevie worshippers who can't handle anything negative being said about her. I mean, EVERYBODY loves her, right?

But the FACT is that there are some people who love the band, but don't like her. I know that that seems an impossibility, but it's true.

So yeah, she might get made fun of. I'm sure the Mr. Useless thing is being blown way out of proportion, but it makes her look like an INGRATE, nonetheless, having said it.

I don't understand what's the problem with Stevie having made a joke at young Lindsey being useless, as a men who grew up in the 50's-60's and in middle-class he most certainly was; those were years during which men professed change, progress and equality but when they came home still expected women to serve them. Throughout all the late 60s and 70s the situation changed on the surface in the fact that women finally had the right to work (and I'm talking about middle-class women), but obviously at home they still had to shoulder all of the domestic chores. Maybe it's because most of the people here belong more or less to the same age demographic?

I'm sorry but Miss Nicks brought this ALL on by herself. She begged Christine to come back and then when she did refused to go in the studio. It wasn't months in the studio, liked she claimed it would be. None of the songs really are Tusk like so she should have been happy with that. We just all assumed a final FM album once Christine came back, was a given, but Stevie ruined it. I will never forgive her for that.

I know Stevie wanted Christine to return, but when she did it scuppered Stevie's
plans for her latest solo work....Songs from the Vault..
Stevie went out on tour with On with the Show with The Mac from September 2014 till Nov. 2015.
The Macs previous tour only just finishing in Oct.2013
When Songs from the Vault was released in Oct. 2014 I am sure Stevie planned to promote it ......but because Christine returned she never could (till now).
I am not defending Stevie, just stating how it was.

Yes and did they REALLY need to go on a tour that long and do multiple dates? No they all wanted the cash but part of me feels like she said no to an immediate album and then NO to any album at all.

Of course it was a joke but Lindsey was anything BUT useless. That is what irks some people. It was a joke but also a swipe. Lindsey did work. Lindsey worked on her songs. Lindsey practiced guitar. Lindsey wrote songs and got gigs.
If I were her, I would call him anything but useless ;)

Just wanted to remind you all that I started this thread as a response the another thread called 'Buckingham McVie is a distraction Fleetwood Mac cannot afford', suggesting that the band could be going ahead if it hadn't been for Lindsey and Chris putting their album out, and which I thought was missing the point a bit. It seemed to me that Stevie's non-involvement was the real reason that things had stalled - after all, this was clearly supposed to be a full band album; the other members had talked about their hopes that Stevie would come into the studio and finish it off, and when she didn't, history had to be rewritten and suddenly it was always going to be a duet album. Lindsey and Christine went out on the road with all those great new songs, and what should have been a wonderful late era for the band turned out to be a major missed opportunity.

Of course, 'Mr Useless' was a flippant and wry comment on their early days, but for me it added to the feeling that any respect and even affection between Stevie and Lindsey that once held the band together has pretty much dried up, and that apart from some cash-grab shows, there's really no chance now of that last great artistic statement from Fleetwood Mac we all long for.

I sincerely hope I'm wrong! I would love there to be an emotional full reunion and a glorious final album, and who knows, maybe there will be, but right now I think that's just a dream.

I think Stevie is doing all this solo stuff lately JUST so she improves her chances of getting into the rock and roll hall of fame as a solo act, which would be the ultimate burn to Lindsey. Yes I think she's that devious lately.
