View Full Version : New version of "Gypsy" in Netflix's show "Gypsy"

In the June 15 issue of Rolling Stone, the new Netflix show "Gypsy" is listed as a must-see show for the summer. The blurb about the show says something to the effect of, "The show's soundtrack gets a boost from a reworked version of the Stevie Nicks original."
It doesn't mention if Stevie sings the new version, or if it's by someone else; however, didn't another Ledge member say that Stevie re-recorded "Gypsy" for this show?

I couldn't find anything more about it, but did see this from The Hollywood Reporter:
"The only thing the show doesn't spell out aggressively and frequently is its title, but after hearing Stevie Nicks sing the opening song 10 times, over a credit sequence featuring Jean's image splintered through shards of glass, you'll probably be able to figure out that it's about the desire to retreat into past identities and carrying vagabond pieces of those identities into the present."

Yes, I believe it was the same person who said Stevie would be touring solo in 2016... several weeks before her tour was announced.
It would seem that person knew what they were talking about!

Ironically, Naomi Watts stars in both Gypsy and the Book of Henry, both of which feature new songs by Stevie.

Like Twisted is she re recording it because she didn't like what Lindsey did with it???? Because if that's so, she's dead wrong. What a shame.

also i'm surprised the show itself is called gypsy. people these days tend to be more politically correct about using the term since a lot of people say it's a slur for the romani people who are an oppressed group everywhere, not a fashion/lifestyle statement. i can completely understand for the time when stevie wrote the song was obviously much different so you can't fault her for it at all, but people are a lot more sensitive about things like that these days.
I remember that person's post (can't remember who it was) and I think just about everything they stated has come to fruition. The most concerning titbit (for me) was that Dave Stewart had effectively been replaced as producer (I realise some would consider this a bonus) because I think he essentially lit a fire under Stevie in recent years. He also ensures work gets completed, released and (to a point) promoted (in an era where an artist of Stevie's age would not ordinarily warrant attention).

There were rumors that she's had some sort of falling-out with Dave Stewart. I wonder why? She seemed so thrilled with him.

 Stevie seems to have had a falling out with just about all of her producers sooner or later..especially the ones that she has known in the Biblical sense.
Well the rumour I read insinuated that Stevie was angry concerning what Dave wrote about their fling in his autobiography. Whilst promoting the book, Dave mentioned that he had sought Stevie's permission to reference their liaison but other sources suggest she wasn't pleased with what was actually written (ie that it was a sordid tale of yet more debauchery).

I agree that Gypsy is one of the most gorgeous songs I have EVER heard and Lindsey's work on it is flat out brilliant. No matter what, we're always going to have that version. But who knows, the new version could be great as well. The remake of Crystal that Stevie did with Cheryl Crow for the Practical Magic soundtrack is crazy gorgeous! So I'm really interested in hearing a new version.

And she also redid the vocal for Dreams a while back with Deep Dish which I think turned out great. I think current Gypsy is prefect but I am curious to hear what she might do with it.

Exactly - she loves how it turned out.
My best bet is that she recorded a piano version, similar to her demo and how she recently sung it for Rolling Stone.

If they're her songs she has every right to have an opinion on how they came out. She can also be thinking of songs that Fleetwood Mac started working on, but she took back because she wasn't happy with how they were starting to turn out.

Interesting! It's much shortened, obviously. I wonder if that's the actual title sequence that will play at the beginning of each episode?
Impressed with the quality of Stevie's studio vocal work on these last two songs we've gotten. She seems to be experimenting again with the softer delivery that was her trademark in the 1970s.
Probably the spare piano arrangements encourage that - in any case, I hope it continues. Makes her sound a lot more dynamic and inviting than the belt-y style of the 90s/00s.

Entertainment Weekly gave the series a stellar review. It stars Naomi Watts as a counselor who, for reasons revealed as the series progresses, begins to secretly get involved in her client's lives. Billy Crudup also stars as her husband. The review mentioned lots of mirrors as a metaphor, which sounds very Stevie-like. Also, the producer said she wrote the pilot while listening to the original version of Gypsy, so apparently the show is heavily inspired by the song.

I read the comment section on the show's trailer and many said Gypsy doesn't seem like a good name choice. I also tend to agree. However, the writer of the show says she used the name because the song resonates with the main character and she listened to it while writing the show's pilot. So maybe the actual show will provide a better explanation.

Well Gypsy is about revisiting the past and there is a melancholy to it which suggests soul searching. The song inspired the writing of this character. This woman is soul searching and taking stock of her life - that fits with the the song. However, the feel of Gypsy is nomadic and bohemian but I don't feel that from the previews.
The life reflection and soul searching of some one who didn't get everything she wanted out of life is definitely there though.

Gypsy is a now somewhat controversial term for the Romani people. They're an oppressed ethnic group that has been subjected to genocide, they're not a fashionable example of the nomadic boho life. When Stevie wrote the song it was different but these days people are much more offended by it and try to be more sensitive about the usage of terms like that so that's why I'd agree it's not a good idea to name the show Gypsy.
I love this sparse, versions of Gypsy..
I hope that they do it like this in 2018.
Part of the Acoustic set, maybe just Stevie and Christine could do it...

She sings it lovely but I wish she wasn't "playing" piano lol.
It's great that she does different projects during her Mac breaks. I truly hope she joins them for a proper studio album at some point. Have a feeling she may surprise us with a solo album. Keeping my fingers crossed for something new either way. But until then, I'm totally digging her songs with other peeps. Her recording of "Your Hand I Will Never Let It Go" is stark, beautiful and such a gift. Eager to hear her music with Lana Del Rey. Lots of new stuff from the Macsters. I only wish it was the five fireflies together.

But altogether unnecessary revision of a perfect Classic , and more of a dirge than anything. :-( if it had been like the 2000 unplugged version I could excuse it. This is just pale in comparison to Lindsey's productions of the that and the original

I really like it. Stevie was obviously sought out to do this song for the show. Perhaps, like Silver Springs, there is a chance she couldn't just offer the song to someone to use, so she put together a piece they could use. I don't see this as a slight to anyone, and probably more of a business decision. Recording this song without Fleetwood Mac probably gives her the right to use this version of her own song without having to seek permission from Fleetwood Mac. And it is sort of a dirge sound. Maybe that's the point of it.

A little more info about the new Gypsy from: http://ultimateclassicrock.com/stevie-nicks-gypsy-2017/?utm_source=sailthru&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=newsletter_4572276
"Netflix’s upcoming Gypsy series, starring Naomi Watts as a therapist on the verge of personal and professional disaster, was strongly inspired by Fleetwood Mac‘s 1982 hit “Gypsy” — so it’s only fitting that the song’s composer, Mac singer Stevie Nicks, recorded a new version for the show.
In fact, according to Nicks, the version viewers will hear attached to Gypsy is closer to her original vision for the song, which eventually ended up on Fleetwood Mac’s Mirage album. “I’m very excited for the world to hear ‘Gypsy’ more like I wrote it — on piano,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “I am very proud of this version.”
As showrunner Lisa Rubin told EW, she heard Fleetwood Mac’s version of “Gypsy” for the first time while she was outlining a project at a coffee shop, and was so struck by the song that it “became part of the fabric” of the show, which is set to debut on the streaming service June 30. “It suggests this idea of grounding yourself in who you used to be and the different versions of yourself. There’s melancholy in it, but something that also feels romantic,” said Rubin. “It feels bare and haunting. It’s still the same song, but there’s a darker element.”
Hooked on the track, Rubin toyed with the idea of hiring a different artist to cover it — and then simply using the original version — but ultimately decided she needed a new take from Nicks herself, and made contact through producer Greg Kurstin. Although Nicks took some convincing, Rubin said the sessions offered the singer an opportunity to come “full circle” with the song, and shared Nicks’ delight at discovering that two Gypsy characters own a dog named Stevie.
“I guess Stevie is really into animals, so she loved that. It was a big deal to her. But, I was like ‘No, no, no don’t you understand? I wrote the show listening to your song,'” Rubin laughed. “But she seemed really excited about the dog part.”

A little more info (from http://inspirer.life/home/2017/06/stevie-nicks-gypsy-new-thriller/ ):
Stevie Nicks Re-Records ‘Gypsy’ for New Netflix Thriller
Earlier this year word spread that Stevie Nicks had re-recorded her Fleetwood Mac classic ‘Gypsy’ for a Netflix series by the same name. Fans were chomping at the bit to see how the song would be reinvented. Well, the wait is over. The stripped down piano version of ‘Gyspy’ is how Nicks says the song was written, with just a piano. Producer Greg Kurstin helped create this new, deeper, ‘Gypsy.’ Kurstin is known for producing songs for artists like Sia and Adele. The song plays at the beginning of each episode with the opening credits.
Gypsy (the series) follows Jean Holloway, (Naomi Watts) a psychologist who’s seemingly perfect life isn’t so perfect. She tends to immerse herself into her patient’s lives, crossing a professional boundary. Holloway begins to lose her true identity in the process of her trying to help her patients.
Creator Lisa Rubin who wrote the pilot while listening to Nicks’ 1982 hit told Entertainment Weekly, “I didn’t know the song ‘Gypsy,’ so when it came on, the tone felt so right. I looked up the lyrics and what it meant and it resonated, all of that longing and feeling, it felt fitting for the show, so it became part of the fabric.” The thought of using another artist’s take on the song mulled around for a while until Executive Producer Liza Chasin had the idea to involve Nicks herself. The original recording still didn’t have the right feel for the show, so the two ladies boldly approached Nicks about re-recording it for their show.
Gypsy‘s first 10-episodes are set to premiere on Netflix Friday, June 30.

Stevie Nicks re-records Fleetwood Mac's 'Gypsy' for Naomi Watts Netflix thriller
JOEY NOLFI@JOEYNOLFI
POSTED ON JUNE 23, 2017 AT 9:00AM EDT
If Gypsy’s title conjures thoughts of Stevie Nicks crooning the same-named Fleetwood Mac tune, you’re thinking like a showrunner. Lisa Rubin wrote the pilot — about a therapist-gone-wild’s harrowing identity crisis — while listening to the reflective track, which Nicks re-recorded for the show’s opening credits. EW is premiering the new version exclusively above.
“I’m very excited for the world to hear ‘Gypsy’ more like I wrote it — on piano. I am very proud of this version,” Nicks told EW in a statement about the latest iteration of the 1982 hit, which features stripped production from superstar producer Greg Kurstin, who’s crafted tunes from Adele’s “Hello” to Sia’s “Chandelier.”
Rubin’s first foray into the world of television stars Naomi Watts as Jean Holloway, an established New York City mental health professional whose sense of self — despite a picture-perfect life (her successful lawyer husband, played by Billy Crudup, and bright young child happily await her return each evening in their spacious Connecticut home) — is nearly derailed by her insatiable curiosity, which ultimately sees her skirting ethical lines as she dangerously inserts herself deeper and deeper into her patients’ lives.
ALISON ROSA/NETFLIX
In a less deliberate twist of fate, Gypsy might not exist at all if it wasn’t for its namesake composition, which Rubin says she heard for the first time over the in-store radio at a coffee shop, where she sat piecing together an outline for a potential project.
“I didn’t know the song ‘Gypsy,’ so when it came on, the tone felt so right. I looked up the lyrics and what it meant and it resonated, all of that longing and feeling, it felt fitting for the show, so it became part of the fabric,” Rubin tells EW of the track’s soul-searching lyrics as they relate to the series. “It suggests this idea of grounding yourself in who you used to be and the different versions of yourself. There’s melancholy in it, but something that also feels romantic… It feels bare and haunting. It’s still the same song, but there’s a darker element… Tonally, there’s both an eeriness and something bare that speaks to the ideas of identity and everything that’s going on at Jean’s core.”
With a completed script in hand and production on the series well underway in early 2016, Rubin admits Working Title Films president (and Gypsy executive producer) Liza Chasin drove the idea for Nicks’ involvement home thanks to a few well-placed connections in the music industry. After ideas of hiring a contemporary artist to cover “Gypsy” evolved into simply using the original Fleetwood Mac cut, Rubin explains something still didn’t feel quite right, and Chasin combed her network (“To pull that off was a pretty baller move,” Rubin notes) to facilitate a collaboration between Kurstin — whom Nicks wanted to work with — and the legendary singer. By September, after hard lobbying (Rubin even wrote a personal letter to Nicks), the song was recorded.
“Stevie’s doing that same thing [as Jean] here, in that she’s revisiting [something about herself],” Rubin observes. “It speaks to the overall idea of identity for her, for Jean, and for me. It all feels full-circle.”
ALISON ROSA/NETFLIX
Rubin finally got the chance to complete that circle when she met Nicks face-to-face after the song was done. “I met her after [shooting wrapped]. I think she was most excited, actually, at the idea that [Gypsy characters] Sam [Karl Glusman] and Sidney [Sophie Cookson] have a dog named Stevie because Sidney is obsessed with Stevie Nicks,” Rubin recalls. “I guess Stevie is really into animals, so she loved that. It was a big deal to her. But, I was like, no, no, no don’t you understand? I wrote the show listening to your song! [Laughs]. But she seemed really excited about the dog part.”
Gypsy‘s first 10-episode season premieres on Netflix in full Friday, June 30. Listen to the show’s titular inspiration as reimagined by Nicks above.

Don't like it. Seems like's she trying to go back and re record every song Lindsey ever touched.

Why are people treating this way more then what it is, whether it be a good or a bad opinion? It's a freaking title song for a new Netflix show inspired by the danm song. Simply using the original wouldn't have fit the dark spooky vibe they were going for on this intro.its not meant to be better then original or a re recording of Lindsey's work. Her voice sounds great and it is what is. I Don't get how people are reviewing this like it's a new song off her latest album. I would barely call it a song  probably didn't take more then a day or two max of her time.

Why? Because she's rereorded a handful of songs out of the many many songs he touched? Nonsense

Exactly...but if one of us were over there saying something like this on the other board we would be run out of town. I truly believe that the best approach to all of this is to just ignore them. Maybe they will go away just because they arent getting attention. It has gotten really old.

It's beautiful! Where did she find this voice?!
So agree...it is beautiful. It is a whole different feel from the original but I love her voice on this and the delicate tone of the whole thing. I sure hope we get the full song somewhere. Bring on the next solo album. :)

About the 20 minute mark into this interview Stevie says there is so much more material to use. She also talks about how she goes back and forth with Fleetwood Mac. This stuff isn't news to most Stevie fans but it does show her humor-- her humor is very dry but it comes across well. If it were just written out you would miss some of it.

Has anyone heard if/when they are going to release the full length version? I'm dying to hear it.

Usually I don't like acoustic versions of perfect songs (see: Layla), but this is really pretty and perfect for the opening credits of the show. Also, I seem to be alone in the Internets of thinking the show is really good, the last five episodes had my heart pounding.

Yeah I'm not liking it either. The life has been sucked out of the song a bit. :sorry:

yeah! that's exactly how i feel i just never knew how to describe it. i mean, it's nice enough on the ears but it takes away something from the whole feel of the song when it's in this style.
It's the most moving recording she's issued in over 25 years.
