The numbers are in!
So the album has debuted officially at #5 on the UK albums chart which is fantastic! I have to say that showing is slightly unexpected. The sales are also extremely strong on 19,147.
In the US though things are looking less rosy. According to reliable sources the album will debut at #22 on the Billboard 200 on sales of 20,443. This now includes streaming sales which account for just 454 of the sales. If the Billboard 200 still worked the way it used to without streaming, the album would be at #6 with sales of 19,989. In my opinion the Billboard 200 does not truly reflect what people are actually buying and so I think it is unfair. Anyway.
So particularly good in the UK, not so great in the US. Turns out very nearly just as many people in the UK bought the album as in the US.
And there you have it for week 1!

Christine did a fair old media blitz in the UK; BBC Radio 2, Later with Jools Holland, BBC Breakfast, The One Show. Apart from Fallon, did they do much TV in the US? Yes, they did lots of magazine/newspaper interviews but so few people actually read these days. Its all about TV/Internet. If the UK was all about Christine, Lindsey hasn't really pulled his weight in the US. That said, I'm sure he's been focusing his time prepping for the live shows- both BM and Mac- I imagine much of the responsibility for all that falls on him.

Red Sun should have been serviced to every top 40 station throughout the US as it's our season for vacation and heading to the Ocean. The promo has been far better in the UK.

Red Sun would have got exactly zero spins at top 40 radio stations in the US.
As for the usual insecure troll that needs to drop in with their divisive BS, I am sure it makes a lonely insignificant life feel more fulfilled. There is no need for it just as I find the LB/FM disiciples negative anti Stevi crap to be nothing more than monkey's throwing crap at each other in their own cage.
Enjoy the continued creative output from these 5 iconic masters of their craft who are most likely in the final 2 to 7 years of their fabulously success careers.

Two comments-
1) A lot of musicians DO base their success on how the album or singles do in the US. They see that as a strong barometer of their success.
2) While I'm sure the artist is happy their album does well in other countries, as a fan, I really only care how they do in America. If they go to #1 in the UK, that's great, but I really want the artist to sell well here in the US.
Having said that, I think it's great the album hit #22 here in America. It did about what I expected and is nothing to sneeze at. Radio has changed so much since 1990 that I'm always surprised when artists like Fleetwood Mac or Stevie Nicks hit the top 10, let alone top 20. Unfortunately, since radio isn't playing any of the singles from the album, it has already hit it's peak, but at least we got some tv performances and lots of interviews and reviews out of it.

1) Part of the band is still british.
2) As a fan, it is irrelevant. You speak as an USAmerican fan here. As an european fan, I have another point of view, but together, we represent alot of the english speaking album buying part of the world :).

I just about spit up my morning TAB on #3. Thanks for making a better start to my day!
#1 is probably the biggest thing. The record buying public is young, and while they do have a segment there, the lion's share of their fanbase is probably 40+.

you got it completely wrong! :xoxo: look at James' post above and bolded parts. the record buying public is old. that's why they are #6 with record buying public in the US.
young people stream. and 1 stream of course does not equal 1 sale. if streaming was counted n the UK, they may have not been #5 there either?

In practical terms, if an album went to #1, it would be considered a hit. It has nothing to do with our personal opinion of the quality of the album. I mean, plenty of 'hit' albums get bad reviews, just like plenty of 'hit' movies get bad reviews. Likewise, albums that get rave reviews might peak at #50 on Billboard. I guess it's just my opinion that a flop generally didn't meet sales expectations.
As for 24 Karat Gold, I myself hated the album, but I wouldn't say "I never saw effort on it. Not even love." If I remember correctly, and I can't double check because I sold my copy to a record store, Stevie dedicated the album to her mother's memory, who had recently died. I think Stevie said she rerecorded some of those particular demos because they were some of her mother's favorites, or something like that. So love was certainly there, even if you didn't feel it yourself.
Having said all that, even though 24 Karat Gold debuted in the top 10, it ultimately didn't sell much, so it could easily be considered a flop.

It probably has to do hugely with streaming being counting as sales in the US. The vast majority of the audience that cares about a new album these days by Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks/Buckingham McVie etc is not the type of audience that streams things much, they purchase actual copies. But the albums that they are competing with in the charts, regardless of the audience being completely different, are the ones that get very heavily streamed, putting their sales far ahead.
Streaming being counted for Billboard 200 sales was announced at the end of November 2014, starting sometime in the next month (I remember because this was a few weeks after the Taylor Swift album came out and she was against streaming, but her album still sold insane anyways) and then expanded what types of streams, including singles, etc over the past year or two.
If we're comparing to 24 Karat Gold, that was released about a month or two before the decision about streaming, so most of Stevie's sales would not have been affected by that.

And I might add, if they (being BM/FM/SN) had wanted to try and capitalize on the streaming thing, they should've done what the Rolling Stones did with their last album (albeit filled with covers) released at the end of last year. They did a lot of promotion with Apple Music-- released videos of Mick and Keith talking about the album, had the Apple Music site feature the album prominently, etc. And then they debuted first place in the UK, 4th in the US, sold pretty well in both countries and according to this tweet https://twitter.com/RollingStones/status/832647645386534912, sold 2 million copies across the world.
Now obviously a lot of that probably has to do with the fact that they're the Rolling Stones and have a different level of fame than Fleetwood Mac and any of its members but I do think that the fact that they were smart about appealing to the streaming audience made a difference.

OMG, it's exhausting-- why oh why must there be comparisons between this duet record and Stevie's latest solo album? Who the eff cares? The sales figures for LB/CM are pretty good--and doing more than I thought they would.
What's more, the quality of the music is pretty damn high, higher in fact than I think any of us would have had a right to expect as these people enter or are already in the seventh decade of their lives.
I don't even care that is not called FLEETWOOD MAC. We got new music, and it's damn good. I'm feeling bliss.

I haven't bought it yet, but have been streaming it every day since it was released.
I pay for Apple Music every month, so I don't buy music the way that I used to.

I have to agree. When I saw FM four times on their last tour and Stevie once last year, there were A LOT of young people in attendance. FM appears to be quite " a thing" among youngsters. I can't help but feel this record could have been way bigger if if was released under the FM name. But I could be dead wrong. Do young people even buy full albums anymore? Dunno. I'm not young. :D:D

Good point! Do they know what albums are?
I just don't get why people keep bringing up buying albums as a problem- in actual albums bought, whether physical or download, they are #6 in the US.
The problem is that streaming now counts too. So if you really wanna compare to 2015 and before in sales you need to take just albums bought category where again, they are apparently #6 here and #5 in the U.K. Either way, people are buying this album and even some promotion for the tour now kicked in, so all that is pretty great!
Good point! Do they know what albums are?
Why are we talking about BUYING albums? In albums bought they are apparently #6 here and #5 in the U.K. Which sounds pretty great to me. I guess if you wanna compare to pre 2015 / pre streaming counting releases, those are the numbers to use.

The reason I had/have high hopes for the success of this album is that I want Fleetwood Mac to morph into Buckingham McVie.
We now know with certainty there will never be another Fleetwood Mac album thanks to Stevie.
However, if BuckVie had been/were to be more successful this entity could give the Mac and Lindsey/Christine the incentive to continue under this new brand.
Based on these Sales, I'm betting this will be the last BuckVie album.
However, it is interesting to conceive of Mick and John supporting Christine's solo album.

#22 in the U.S. is better than I was expecting. Buckingham McVie is a non-proven entity. The sound may be familiar, but the name is not. Compare this ranking to a Buckingham or McVie solo outing, and I think they have reason to be proud and recognize the relative appeal of collaboration.

Have sales ever stopped Lindsey from producing music before? I don't get the feeling he's really that in it for the money when it comes to the actual production of the album. Say You Will and most of his solo stuff are proof of that.

In the UK they have 4 albums in the top 100;
Buckingham McVie #5
FM Greatest Hits #36

Very Best of FM #94
A (very quick) scan of the charts tells me they are the only artists with 4 albums in the top 100.
FM have consistently had 2 or 3 albums in the top 100 for several months. A lot of it is down to the Rumours anniversary. However, I think quite a lot is also a bounce coming from Buckingham McVie.

The fact that the album has remained in the top 10 in the UK for the second week is hugely impressive given today's market. I am very surprised. So far its chart run is as follows:
Week 1: #5 - 19,147 copies
Week 2: #10 - 10,462 copies (29,609 copies)
Therefore nearly 30,000 copies in just two weeks is seriously impressive. I can see the album going Silver (60,000) if it can remain a decent seller. Hopefully with the continuing support of BBC Radio 2, people will still buy the album.

Quick update for you all. The album has plummeted to #95 for the second week on the Billboard 200 from its #17 debut last week. It was to be expected really even though it's disappointing.
HOWEVER. The album doesn't seem to be losing much momentum at all here in the UK. I still think this is due to BBC Radio 2's overwhelming support and its playing of Red Sun which is its most played track over the last two weeks.
Also, at the time of writing the album is at #30 on the iTunes albums chart which is great and shows how there are also many younger people buying the album.
I can see the album remaining in the Top 20 for week 3 when the chart is published on Friday. If it does it's extremely good news. Of course I will update when I get the info. ;)

Great news! The album remains in the UK Top 20 for its 3rd week on the chart and it drops slightly from #10 to #17. This is very impressive and shows how the album is proving to have longevity here in the UK.

Week 1: #5 - 19,147 copies
Week 2: #10 - 10,462 copies (29,609 copies)

I mean it's not blockbuster Rumours sales, but 35,000 people in the UK alone picked up a copy of BuckVie in just three weeks! I'd say there is definitely an interest in their music. How many new and upcoming artists would love to sell 35,000 copies of a record, let alone in just the UK?

So trying to crucify yet another person for expressing their opinions huh? Something this board has made a total career out of. The album is mediocre in a lot of peoples' opinions. And the whole excuse for saying that no one knows who they are is total BS. i'm glad you are enjoying it. You should if that is your taste. Just stop with the criticism of others for liking what they like.

Well, I think the Ledge is different, in that it's not just a "fan site". There are dissenting opinions here, and people battle it out sometimes.
I think we all have to be a little thick skinned, and realize that everyone's not going to agree with our opinions, and when the spit hits the fan, just brush it off, and say **** em, in your head! That's what I do, anyway.:D

Exactly! And this is entertainment for people here not a serious real life where we have to watch our words and be super responsible. It's nice to have a place where you can let loose and perhaps even hone your arguing skills, about something you care about but in the end is inconsequential for all of us here.

The truth of the matter is... I'm proud that Christine and Lindsey are out of the gate and doing what they are doing. This is a first!!
Some shows have tanked in some markets. Yep, they are new and nobody knows who they are.
Buckingham/McVie?? Who the hell is that??
In 2017, two older musicians (that never really had the stardom Stevie had) are doing it!!
That's brave. New album that charted beyond expectation. UK loving it.
3000k-6000k venue shows. The Greek is nearly sold out! NYC Beacon is nearly sold out. Vegas has picked up tremendously.. (it was looking bleak) WA is completely sold out. She's 74!!! (in 5 days) Like Wow!!
It made me think if FMac carried on w/o Stevie they really could be a viable entity. I know some of you want that. But I would like a Final 5 album. Not because of sales or venue $$. I want to hear those 3 part harmonies again. This last BuckVie album is fantastic. It flows so well when I listen to it. Certainly, Stevie could add to it. If not, I hope we get another Fleetwood Mac album.
If music be the food of love, THEN PLAY ON.

all beautifully said. and they are actually getting their 2 names out there now, and getting more known, while finally getting to do what LB wanted to do with FM since SYW was first coming out - making, releasing and touring new music - so good for them! i for one am definitely grateful and proud that they went ahead with all of this, and hope for more in the future (hope they both stay in good health!!). :]
on another board i read several opinions stating what an unbelievable force of nature LB and CM are - and that it's astonishing how great and hooky their newly released music still is - that those 2 can produce a hook as easily as regular people go to the bathroom.

^^^^^ It takes guts to create something artistically that might flop. Play 8 songs of new music in front of 1/2 full arenas.
And look at the reward. Sales have picked up. Interest is starting to peak. The album charted. They've added 6 or so dates. There's interest overseas.
Christine McVie is such a beautiful artist. Her story is so authentic and beautiful.

BACK ON TOPIC. Great news! The album remains in the UK Top 20 for its 4th week on the UK albums chart, even increasing by one position to sit at #16. This is amazing! And with the current Top 100 chart featuring streaming, it makes it even more impressive that an album by people of their age can sell this well and keep up with the younger big artists . Other similar artists to them fail to do it. Even artists like Paul McCartney and Elton John have failed to stay in the Top 20 for longer than a couple of weeks over the last few years. This is very impressive and shows how the album is proving to have longevity here in the UK.
Its UK chart run and sales is as follows:
Week 1: #5 - 19,147 copies
Week 2: #10 - 10,462 copies (29,609 copies)
Week 3: #17 - 4,738 copies (34,347 copies)
Week 4: #16 - NOT AVAILABLE - approx 5,000 (>39,000 copies)

And the whole excuse for saying that no one knows who they are is total BS.
People know who they are when they go by their proper name . . .
Starting with "Whenever I Call You Friend," and continuing with "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" and "Leather and Lace," Stevie was able to establish herself as an entity outside of the band by singing with other rock stars. Lindsey and Christine were too busy making Fleetwood Mac albums to establish themselves outside of the band that way, which is exactly why they should have called "LB/CM" Fleetwood Mac and should have gone on the road with Mick and John as Fleetwood Mac.

The album is at #168 on the Billboard 200 in its third week (17-95-168).
I'm surprised it hasn't had a bit more staying power than that, given they're on tour. Maybe it'll pick back up now that they're in full swing.
UK numbers, on the other hand, wow. I can't think of another FM-related project that's had that kind of staying power on any chart, anywhere, since - well, Tango!

I think some fans are stuck in a time warp, still measuring the band's chart success on the same scale as 1977. So the rankings today are always going to be disappointing, if it's not Top 10. Why not enjoy the music without imposing unrealistic expectations for yourself and the band?

I agree. Sales are nice to gauge the level of interest in a project, but no one in FM's class sells records like they used to. Let's just be happy that they are willing to keep on doing it and releasing some good music.

I believe if Stevie had kicked in a few decent songs and had they called it a Fleetwood Mac album and marketed it very well it could have been at least a gold album here and worldwide it could have sold in the millions.

The album exits the UK Top 20 for its 5th week on the UK albums chart but only just, slipping 8 places to #24. This is still good considering the current industry and shows the album is still selling well here. BBC Radio 2 have finally gotten rid of Red Sun from their playlist so I expect the album to drop further at a more considerable rate from now on. Unless they add another track from the album to their playlist which is possible.
Anyway, its UK chart run and sales is as follows:
Week 1: #5 - 19,147 copies
Week 2: #10 - 10,462 copies (29,609 copies)

Not bad sales at this time in history and considering the lack of real brand recognition - Buck McV means little to the great mass of people and if it had been branded FM I bet sales would be double. Interesting that Stevie's last effort is estimated to have hit 150,000 worldwide sales three years ago.

Just found this short but sweet nice review in The Observer - I missed it first time round, so it might have been posted already. It came two days after a much sniffier one in its sister paper The Guardian. I reckon her's got it just right - 'strange and beautiful' sums it up well I think:
'Fleetwood Mac’s last masterpiece, Tango in the Night, relied heavily on Buckingham/McVie compositions, with the group’s third great songwriter, Stevie Nicks, generally absent. Now that McVie and Buckingham are back together in the touring Mac band for the first time since 1997, they’ve reunited in the studio for this succinct collection of gentle pop-rockers, familiar yet far more strange and beautiful than 2013’s brittle Fleetwood Mac EP. Buckingham’s spidery guitar shivers through Love Is Here to Stay and slays the solo on Carnival Begin, while McVie’s undimmed gift for melody illuminates every song.'

I think it's amazing the album is still at 59.
I'm amazed how long the Album stayed on The BBC playlist, which no doubt helped keep BuckVie in the Album charts in The uk.
We played it at breakfast , this morning, at my husband's request....
He's not a big FMC fan (tho he likes Christine) but he does like this Album.
As I've said before it's okay for me.....but my favourite track nowadays is...
Too far gone.

The album drops considerably on the chart this week, down 26 places to #85. This is largely due to the fact that Feel About You was finally dropped from the BBC Radio 2 playlist after a long run.
Week 5: #24 - NOT AVAILABLE - approx 3,500 (>42,500 copies)
Week 6: #57 - NOT AVAILABLE - approx 1,500 (>44,000 copies)
Week 7: #55 - NOT AVAILABLE - approx 2,000 (>46,000 copies)
Week 8: #53 - NOT AVAILABLE - approx 2,000 (>48,000 copies)
Week 9: #57 - NOT AVAILABLE - approx 1,700 (>49,700 copies)
Week 10: #49 - NOT AVAILABLE - approx 2,000 (>51,700 copies)
Week 11: #51 - NOT AVAILABLE - approx 1,800 (>53,500 copies)
Week 12: #59 - NOT AVAILABLE - approx 1,600 (>55,100 copies)
Week 13: #85 - NOT AVAILABLE - approx 1,300 (>56,400 copies)

Jumping in ahead of James89...
Sadly Lindsey Buckingham/Christine McVie dropped out of the UK to 100 this week. It's had a good run though and I firmly believe if they ever came to the UK it would have a good chance of jumping back into the top 10.
Rumours sits at 35 and Very Best of at 42.

For the life of me, I have no idea why they wouldn't come to the UK.

It might still happen at some point. I can only surmise they'd always planned for the US tour to go through as long as it will even long before new dates were added. Its also clear Lindsey's had an album release and possibly a small solo tour for the new year planned for a while so I can see a visit to the UK is difficult for them to fit in even if they wanted one. That said half a dozen dates in early December would have been nice.

Yeah, this makes no sense at all. They could probably shift 20,000 more copies if they did.
Maybe they will? They'd need to do a solid micro-tour there and in Ireland. Maybe half a dozen dates.
