Concert Review: Harry Styles’ Troubadour Show Delivers a Triumph with Tears and Stevie Nicks

Who would have thought that in this age of auto-tune and EDM bleeps that sound like functions on a microwave oven, a member of a made-for television boy band would carry the torch for rock music. Yet here he is: Harry Styles, the 23-year-old “X Factor U.K.” grad and One Direction fave, who has delivered what is arguably 2017’s most stunning musical statement with his self-titled debut album.

On the one-week anniversary of that album’s May 12 release, Styles joked about his limited repertoire onstage at the Troubadour, a surprise gig for diehards announced just that afternoon (proceeds from ticket sales went to the charity Safe Place for Youth). It was the latest in a series of so-called “underplays,” starting with a show at the 600-capacity The Garage in London. And being the Los Angeles performance, the Friday bow came with extra star wattage: a guest appearance by Stevie Nicks, who joined Styles for three songs midway through the set, Fleetwood Mac’s classic “Landslide,” Nicks’ own “Leather and Lace,” and Styles’ sweet “Two Ghosts.”

Styles began the night with an entirely unneeded introduction – “I’m Harry, nice to meet you,” he said to no one in particular and everyone at the same time – and a justified reverence for the room where Elton John, The Eagles, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, and Carole King were onstage regulars. Indeed, his opening numbers, “Ever Since New York” and “Carolina,” both felt like nods to that bygone era of real instruments – thanks to multiple guitars, a Mellotron, and the impressive chops of Styles drummer Sarah Jones (already deemed a “badass” by the internet) — and irresistible melodies.

Styles doesn’t posture much during his performances – a policy also held by One Direction who famously objected to dance routines and the pop tropes for which Simon Cowell-discovered acts are known – opting instead to concentrate on the vocals, which hit the top of his range and require as much power as his diaphragm can muster. Credit the latter to 1D, which no doubt sharpened his ability to belt a money note (witness: the crescendo at the end of “Sign of the Times”).

At times during the Troubadour show, Styles adopted an Oasis-like stance at the microphone — “Sweet Creature,” for instance, articulating the acoustic subtleties of the folksy number, which he explained was the first he wrote for the album. During punchier numbers like “Woman,” “Only Angel,” and “Kiwi,” however, Styles embodied the swagger of Jagger. He marveled more than once that it was the best night of his life, no doubt due to Nicks’ imminent appearance.

Duetting with the woman who traded verses with Tom Petty meant both triumph and tears for Styles, who was visibly emotional for “Two Ghosts,” a standout track on the album. While it took a minute for the volume of Nicks’ vocals to match Styles’, her mere presence added a heft to the song and reaffirmed that it is, in fact, a beauty (Nicks said it herself: “It’s a great song, huh?”). Here’s hoping it will be Columbia Records’ choice for the album’s next single.The Fleetwood Mac classic “Landslide” followed, which Nicks explained was the one song that the band plays without fail at every single show. “This song travels through the generations,” she said. Styles had no trouble hitting the sweet spots in the harmonies, continuing on with Nicks’ solo hit “Leather and Lace” then bowing down to the “queen of everything” as she left the stage.

“I am losing my s— in a cool way,” a misty-eyed Styles added, and proceeded to slap his face in disbelief.

Earlier in the night, an audience member yelled out for Styles to “Show us your tits!” Without missing a beat, Styles responded, “It’s still early and I haven’t had one drink so that’s a maybe.” By the time set-closer “Kiwi” and show-ender “Sign of the Times” came around, Styles was truly — perhaps finally — able to let his hair down. You could even say he’s just getting going.

How awesome was that. Wow. It explains why Landslide was on the itunes Rock Charts too. For all to be said about Stevie not wanting to record with FM, she certainly has kept this band relevant all these years and opened up a whole new generation. I don't know how one could argue with that. They should cut her some slack at times. She is making them a lot of money!

Bravo! This was not only entertaining, it was CONVINCING. Harry's warm, laid-back tenor blends well with Stevie's signature voice. And their onstage chemistry is obvious to anyone with eyes. Harry may be just a puppy, but he already knows a hell of a lot about stage presence and communication with other musicians. His skills excited her. She sounds fantastic on Leather and Lace.

I thought those were pants, too. Then I thought they might be stockings, but a closer look revealed she was wearing tight, fashionable pants--and that she looks pretty fierce in them.

She does deserve a lot of credit for reaching the youth in particular. However, I don't think she's the only keeping Fleetwood Mac relevant these days. The Buckingham-McVie album is doing a pretty good job of reminding critics and their large fanbase that they also write and record relevant, contemporary pop music.

It was amazing.


My fantasy is that Fleetwood Mac will play the Troubador the week of the Dodger Stadium show in July.

I have never listened to Harry's music (or One Direction for that matter), but this was really fun to see. I always get a little excited when Stevie makes random appearances. She looks and sounds great too as always!

This encouraged me to check out the album. It's got nice moments like Ever Since New York and the Traviswannabe Sign of the Timea, but its reviews are way out of bounds. I don't hear Bowie or Elton John(!) at all. Def in the Oasis or Travis style but not as good as either. She classes him up. He does have a thing for older women after all. And I think that's vodka he keeps swigging in those water bottles, which is barbaric behavior.

tbh i don't think christine was never really known for her deep lyrics, i always thought her lyrics were like a hallmark card. her 'thing' was her catchy pop sensibility. but as much as i love her, stevie has had pleeeeeenty of dud lyrics herself. and idk about you but i don't consider releasing an album of several decode old demos reworked to be a "bold move" lol.

that's true but that song isn't what i think of for "typical christine". when i think of like 'typical christine' i think "tell me lies tell me sweet little lies oh no no you can't disguise" "you look at me and i just melt" "say you love me falling falling falling" "honey honey honey what's sweeter than you" that's how i always think of her lyrics-- cute little, greeting card-esque rhymes to a catchy beat. so talking about being the honey in your tea is just typical christine for me.

Harry Styles Bridges Past and Present at Stirring Tour Kickoff Show
Singer-songwriter treated an adoring San Francisco crowd to a skillful blend of solo favorites and One Direction classics

Outside San Francisco's Masonic, a modest but modern venue nestled in the city's upscale Nob Hill neighborhood, thousands of Harry Styles fans had spent hours – some, even days – waiting on the steep sidewalks. The mob would feel smaller inside the venue, during a show that was the most intimate many of them had ever seen the boy-band heartthrob play.

It was more than the screams that made Styles' first official tour date as a solo artist feel like he was playing to a football stadium rather than a theater. At 23 years old and with only 10 songs to his name, Styles has the charm, presence and feistiness of a veteran rocker twice his age, strutting and strumming across the stage with a delicate power that makes him seem as accessible as he is otherworldly.

Styles and his carefully curated band took the stage Tuesday night after Muna, a California electro-pop trio that brought the house down with a one-two punch of Stevie Nicks' "Edge of Seventeen" and their own "I Know a Place." Lead singer Katie Gavin set the tone for the night, building upon the joyous mood of the crowd. "Harry has built his career, his essence, on kindness," she earnestly said to deafening screams.

After a brief delay due to a fire alarm that dared to shut the whole night down, Styles finally made his grand entrance to a loop of the "Ever Since New York" harmonies, already intoxicating on his self-titled debut album but nearly hypnotic as the lights dimmed to reveal his guitar-holding silhouette on the pink-and-floral curtain that was hung after Muna left the stage. Here, we were introduced to Harry's first persona of the night: folk troubadour. From "New York" on, he displayed his most tender, rootsy side, performing more album ballad cuts like "Two Ghosts" and "Sweet Creature" – the latter met with a sea of fan-made pink hearts that were held up throughout the song. Much earlier than anticipated, Styles reminded everyone exactly where he came from, offering a tender take on the anthemic One Direction fan favorite "Stockholm Syndrome."

Following "Sweet Creature," Styles disposed of his floral jacket – part of a matching, two-piece floral suit – and launched into Act II: raucous rocker. A Jagger-ian strut propelled his body across the stage during "Only Angel," and he gyrated to the sexy "Woman." During that same track, a fan threw a rainbow flag on stage, and in direct opposition to the song's heteronormative storyline, he subversively twirled around with it before attaching it to his microphone where it remained for the rest of the main set.

By this point, Styles had completely loosened up, shedding the semi-serious (possibly even nervous) mode of his set's first half. He began to perform a few covers, a twist that was as crowd-pleasing as it was brilliant. He first tackled "Just a Little Bit of Your Heart," a piano ballad he co-wrote that Ariana Grande sung on her 2014 album My Everything. He turned Grande's melodrama on its head, remaking the tearjerker as a down-and-dirty country-rock romp. He did the same with One Direction's massive, unmistakable breakout hit "What Makes You Beautiful," a bold choice for an artist setting out to forge his own path.

But Styles has proven time and time again that to be a successful solo artist, you don't necessarily have to let go or even erase your past. As soon as "WMYB" ended, the band launched into the gritty, glammy "Kiwi" which got an even bigger rise from the crowd than the 1D classic did.

Once the song wrapped, Styles marched off the stage with the rainbow flag as the set was re-arranged and his jacket was revived for the "encore." It was here that he unveiled his third act and his final persona: the subtle superstar. The show's final 15 minutes featured a tight trio of tracks, beginning with "From the Dining Table," a gorgeous, simple guitar tune featured only Styles and primary collaborator Mitch Rowland on guitar. Next, he launched into an incredible take on Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain" as he celebrated and highlighted the talented quartet of musicians he culled together for his touring band. He could've ended the show with the classic cover and it would've felt completely natural, charming and on-brand, but of course he had an appropriately epic goodbye up his sleeve with "Sign of the Times," the single that officially launched his solo career. Styles' live version of the anthemic, Queen-inspired, nearly six-minute opus was stirring and triumphant as bright lights bathed him and his fans. The singer looked positively radiant as he shared in this moment, one that rightfully belonged to him, with every person in the room, whether physically present or being FaceTimed, Periscoped or live-texted in.

"You are the best friends any person could ever ask for," he offered sincerely, much earlier in the night. Blurring the lines of fans and friends is not typical rock star behavior, but then again, Harry Styles isn't shaping up to be your typical rock star.

May 19, 2017 (When I see a pic like this, with the audience holding up their phones and filming, I try to imagine if only we had this technology in the 1970's. We would have so many Live Rhiannon's to enjoy from every angle. I hope & pray all the time for all the Tusk Rhiannon's to fall in my lap one day, even if they're just audio recordings.)
