View Full Version : Christine interview in Mojo magazine

There's a lovely new interview with Christine in the new June issue of Mojo (Sgt Pepper on the cover). She talks about her childhood, joining FM, leaving, re-joining, and of course the new album.
She resists the idea that it was ever going to be a new FM album: 'That might have been how the press were presenting it, but we really had no project in mind at that time.'
The interviewer describes it as 'buoyant' and says her songs are 'all about harmonies and pathos'.
Definitely worth £5.25 of anyone's money...

You know if Lindsey is in a mood, he's not going to say that. He's more mellow than he used to be, but he is not compliant. John gets cranky and wouldn't say it either, not that he ever talks. Michele

I agree with elle. I don't know why Christine would put it on the press. Mick and Lindsey have confirmed it was a FM album and that they were just waiting for Stevie to add her songs. So knowing that, this interview makes Christine look silly, to say the least.
Happy to hear someone say they like the album, though. At least, buoyant sounds complimentary.

and Christine confirmed in 2014-2015 interviews. as usual, woman has to do the cleanup for boys' mess, they just made up a tale and sent her out to try to sell it. :p
yeah, they were all in the same city, back in the spring of 2014, about to rehearse for the OWTS tour. and booked the studio. and then SN flew to Nashville. and then there were 4.

that's probably why he's not out there. it's Mick and Christine selling the album and the tour and the agreed-upon spin. i just wish they didn't make her spinning this bs - but it's fantastic to see Christine out and about in interviews, and their little promos, either way! :blob1:

It's a tough choice. Throw your pretentious band mate under the bus. Or,try to sell me a bridge in Brooklyn. Poor Chris... at least she got 16 years away from that mess.

curious though that as they are now a duo they aren't doing this round of promotion as a duo....
Avoid Lindsey having to deal with questions like, "you made the last album with Mick, John and Stevie, and now this album is with Mick, John and Chris, what are the differences?"
Or, "For many years FM was a foursome, with Stevie Nicks and you as the singer/songwriters. Now you're a foursome again, this time with Christine Mc Vie and you as the singer/songwriters. Why is that? And how was making this album different than your last album with Stevie?"
People are far more likely to harp on the Stevie thread with him, which frankly is their own doing since so much of their 'marketing' especially in recent years before Chris returned was all about the "dialogue" he and Stevie are still having with each other and all that.......

Given the way Lindsey and Christine originally hedged about Stevie's participation--"should Stevie want to participate," we'll be glad to work her in the mix, etc, blah, blah, blah, I'm guessing they always knew in the back of their minds that she wasn't going to do it. Still, I wish Christine could just say, "Yeah, this was supposed to be a Mac album; yeah, it SHOULD be a Mac album; yeah, spinning this crap is crap." But she sees all the ensuing plans for 2017-18 as a chance to go out in a blaze doing what she loves and I suppose doing the rounds with the press is part of all that.

That was a great interview.
“We just decided this was a finite project, not a career move” - i think this sums all the probable discussion between them to do this a "duet album" and not a Fleetwood Mac one. I think it's smart by their side, given all the implications... to give up the next big tour with Stevie? To destroy, at this stage, the classic lineup again? To record more albums this way?
I am sure they discussed the options a lot, and maybe someone was voting for another solution, who knows?, but they finally decided what we know.

Thanks so much for going to this trouble Elliefw. I'm going to have to go out and buy myself a copy now. So many great lines and interesting titbits.
I think it puts into perspective (the well known songwriter) Eddy Quintela's song writing credits. He did very well for himself- probably making a tidy packet on the back of all those songs he 'wrote'.
Its a shame to hear Danny Kirwan was so anti-harmony. His songs screamed out for harmonies due to the melodies he came up with.

Hmm, I promise I am not trying to stir the pot, but I felt like I couldn't let this pass by. Why do I have the feeling that if Stevie were to say "I'm Stevie F'ing Nicks", you'd have to point out that this was a sure sign of her out of control ego, yet you celebrate Christine for saying it? Sorry, not trying to be critical of you, just my two cents based on observing some of the talk going around on this space over the last few months. Back to regularly scheduled programming...

It's a fair question. And to answer as best as I can.. (even though this is directed at Homer). Christine's history had been that of a more "humble" and laid back character. So for her to say that is funny and ironic.
Stevie Nicks says it constantly...in her actions and demeanor...

If not he should have. haha. Reminds me of the line where John didn't want to spend money on a mixer while Lindsey and Stevie were arguing over who would mix SYW. And Lindsey said: "OK, we can just leave out your bass line." And he says something like: "Like always." And Lindsey kinda looks down and smirks and says: "Alriiight." haha.
That's why it's so glorious how present is John on this new track. It really is beautiful given John's recent health concerns. "In my world everybody stays"... :'(

I think in the context of the interview, with all of psychological hurdles Christine has had to leap in order to bring her gift to the world again, the reminder that she's CHRISTINE F***ING MCVIE is so profound and well-earned.
If Stevie had said it in, say, the context of answering an interview question why she isn't doing a Mac album--I think it would shock many. But WOULD SHE BE WRONG?

Yeah, if Stevie had said that, people who don't like her would be condemning her, but since Christine said it, it's ok. Doesn't matter to me either way, but it is funny. Christine's entitled to having as big an ego as Stevie or Lindsey.
I found the interview very interesting, especially her comments about her songwriting with ex-husband Eddy Q. I personally thought her songwriting reached it's peak with Tango and Behind the Mask, and I always thought Eddy might have had something to do with that. Clearly, her songwriting with Eddy was something she didn't want to talk about, yet ironically, that was something I was really interested in hearing more about. As Long As You Follow, Save Me, Love Shines, Behind the Mask, Skies the Limit, and Heart of Stone are just as good as anything from Tango, but it's too bad she doesn't agree because they weren't huge hits.
Her comments about Behind the Mask were also disheartening. If the album had sold 7 million copies, like Tango, then she wouldn't have made those comments. By all accounts, the recording of Behind the Mask went very smoothly, with Stevie much more present than she had been with Tango, yet she lumped it with Time, an experience Christine hated.

No, it's context. If Stevie had said that after looking at herself in the mirror when she realized how much of a toll Klonopin had taken on her ("Oh my god, I have to do something . . . I'm Stevie f**king Nicks") I doubt anyone would have an issue. Context.

To be fair, her father died during the BTM tour, which I'm sure tainted her opinion of that era. She talks much more about her animosity towards Dave Mason than anything else. It probably all runs together for her.

And Christine is saying that she's Christine McVie to her young, shy window-dressing self to give her young self confidence. That's very different than saying to the world that Lindsey better appreciate your stardom or you'll be gone before the palm trees fall on his head!
I mean, Christine does have an ego and she does jokingly say things like that. And in the past, she wasn't easy to get along with. So, no one is saying she's sweet and humble and I wouldn't want her to be. During IMT promotion she said she wrote all of FM's hits, but it was one laughing comment among self-deprecating ones. But here she is not even joking or being boastful, playful or not. She was asking a question about how she would speak to her young self. Anyone who was quiet or insecure as a youth, anyone who had self-doubt would say something similar to their young self and let them know if they only could see into the future, things will be different. It gets better. That's all I saw in her statement.

She has an ego about her music for sure! I remember the SYW comment about too much guitar. Or, her comments about LB during the BTM era.

I don't think this is a fair assessment of Stevie's comment at all. She didn't say it like those things were beneath her, but more like she's so recognizable that it's hard for her to go anywhere without making a scene. If she went out to a concert with a guy, people are going to take pictures, it's going to be on the internet and the magazines. She doesn't want to have to deal with that. It's not that she's too special to go to the market, it's that she can't go without a bunch of people coming up to her and wanting autographs and pictures, etc. I'm betting it's much easier for someone like Lindsey or John and maybe even Christine to go out and do normal things. Billy Burnett mentioned in an interview that during the BTM tour Stevie was getting serious death threats and the FBI got involved. Now tell me how easy it is to go out to buy groceries if you're Stevie Nicks.

Tbh in recent years it's different, I don't think she gets the same attention as before. I read someone saw her at a McDonalds in Calabasas and that no one really bothered her and another time at a makeup counter and again, she wasn't really bothered. She might get asked for a few pictures but she won't get swarmed like the big, younger celebrities of today. I think she just lives a sheltered life.

To be fair, her father died during the BTM tour, which I'm sure tainted her opinion of that era. She talks much more about her animosity towards Dave Mason than anything else. It probably all runs together for her.
I forgot about Christine's father dying during the BTM tour. I can see how she would lump the recording and tour of BTM together with Time, even though they were very different experiences. I feel a little badly for Rick and Billy, though. When Christine makes disparaging remarks about BTM, she's not just badmouthing her own material, but also theirs, and that's unfortunate. At the time, she said she was excited about the album, but now she hates it?
What's even funnier is, she acknowledged she doesn't listen to any of their stuff anyway- in an interview for the Mirage deluxe edition, she said she hadn't even bothered to listen to it before the interview. I really do appreciate her honesty, I just wish she would have clarified some things or gone into a little more detail. Like, why does she hate Behind the Mask now? Was it the band, the material, the producer? Was it Lindsey's absence? Was it because it didn't sell as well as Tango? Or was it because of things going on in her personal life, separate from the recording?

Thank you, Elliefw! I really appreciate getting the chance to read this interview. I'm glad she talked about the following things:
1. How cool the "under-produced" "Crazy 'Bout You Baby" still sounds.
2. How important Bob Welch was to the development of the FM sound.
3. Her strong dislike of Dave Mason, which I had known about but never heard her directly reference in a interview before.
4. Her honest assessment of Mirage (which I still think is better than Tango).
5. Her mentioning "Remember Me" as a great song--it was my favorite Pre-BN era Christine song for ages.
6. Her more-than-hint that Eddie Q's role in her work was negligible (though I'm not sure how accurate this is...)
7. And her anecdote about the car. I had no idea her isolation and paranoia had gotten that pronounced. She must have been in a very dark place for several years.

3. Her strong dislike of Dave Mason, which I had known about but never heard her directly reference in a interview before.
It also explains a bit more about what happened with that album. It's nothing I hadn't suspected, based on a call I had twenty years ago with John Courage and what Richard Dashut and Mick have said in recent years. (Dave's own fans basically said he was kind of an ass when I ran a Mason fanpage.)

Is she known for visiting wounded soldiers at Walter Reed hospital and giving them music? Does she perform at fundraisers for causes or people like heart disease and Jane Goodall? Oh wait, that's Stevie.

Why must we constantly pit Christine and Stevie against each other. Both of them are incredibly talented and successful women who have a prominent place in music. They both have more than paid their dues and have made many contributions to music. They are both caring and have done things for charity. I feel like they are both usually polite and genuine in interviews as well. In the end, it's not a contest. I think both of these lovely ladies deserve to be able to do what makes them happy without people making comparisons or unnecessary criticisms every 5 seconds.

i really don't understand this argument. why would being a legendary act who seemingly has nothing new to say be "wise"? it just means that's what you chose to do, while others chose to keep creating. whether what they create is good, amazing, or it sucks does not negate the fact that they are legendary singer-songrwriters, who still feel the need to create new music.
they all should by now be well above any worries of stopping themsleves from creating or releasing new stuff because it might not be as good or as commercial as the music that made them legendary in the first place. if they want to create and release new music, more power to them!
same as if Stevie wants to just tour, and if she wants to tour deep cuts, more power to her! she didn't care there were people at her shows who were yelling to stop talking, or that they didn't know the songs, she went ahead and did what she wanted to do. and her fans more than appreciated that. same as most FM. Lindsey and Christine fans appreciate the two of them satisfying their creating urges and releasing and touring new music. posts like the one above seem to really want them not to (it's just the one of several posts i've seen and i don't mean to pick on you personally :wavey:), and i just don't get that.

Well maybe you're right about their legacy .The Time album didn't seem to impact it much because almost nobody heard it. Since the new album doesn't even bear the Fleetwood Mac name most people might not notice it either.

Dude, chill. We're all fans of the same band here. Re-read the way you're typing, because my reading of it is:

It's divisive and it's an example why some think this whole board is toxic. It's not "those Chiffon-heads" versus "the rest of us". You'd think we were some really geeky cliques in high school.
You can certainly disagree with someone's opinion but to just write it off as them disliking the song to defend their favorite member? Sorry but I think everyone wants these songs to turn out well, and if someone disliked it they just disliked it.
And you know what... that's cool! I'm not big on "Feel About You" or "In My World" for a couple reasons, but I'm honestly jealous of anyone who is and I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way. It shouldn't enrage you that somebody likes or dislikes a song :)
P.S. Not meaning to call you out too hard here, this is just an issue that I've noticed a lot around here lately and it's not conducive to discussion.

Odd. I don't have any such fears. "Feel About You" is pretty darn representative of her poppier catalogue. And in terms of song structure--verse, chorus, hook, it's all veery consistent with the songs you mentioned. I feel about this song as I felt when I first heard "Everywhere" back in 1986: "Oh, pure pop." It doesn't reach the level of YMLF or SYLM, both of which, to my way of thinking, signal the apotheosis of her fusion of pop and blues, but "Feel About You" is no better or worse than her lighter and enjoyable tunes.

There is very much a divide on this board. Some people, and we know who they are, think Lindsey and Christine are infallible and above criticism, so when someone says they don't like their new song, it must be because they really only like Stevie and must hate Christine or Lindsey. It couldn't be that... the new songs aren't that good! No way.
For the record, neither song I've heard from the new album caught my interest, nor most of the American public, for that matter. But guess what- I didn't like 24 Karat Gold at all, either. The Buck/McVie album will fade away, just like the FM EP and 24 Karat Gold. The only difference is, Stevie will play bigger venues.

hmmmm..... well then I don't belong in either of those supposed camps, because I think all 5 members of this band are totally fallible, to the point that very often they are all their own worst enemies.
What I love is the way their individual foibles and fallibilities come together to create an incomparable BAND that transcends all of their perverseness.
Pointing out their individual quirks and eccentricities and faults is in no way disloyal, disrespectful, or somehow the mark of a 'less-than-true' fan. Anyone who thinks that needs to look at their own insecurities and hang-ups to figure out why on earth they could possibly feel "threatened" because someone else doesn't blindly love a performer the way they do.
It's only rock and roll folks.

This is all very true imo but why is the fact that Stevie plays bigger venues solo always trotted out like it makes her so much better? She's always gotten more attention, for a lot of reasons, a lot having to do with her 'lead singer' status and especially with her image. I'd never undermine her talent but anyone who acts like she doesn't owe a great deal of her popularity just to her image/visual aspect is delusional. It doesn't make her any better or worse than Lindsey or Christine.
I'm probably getting off topic here but a lot has been said about people's jealousies, especially Lindsey's, of Stevie's commercial popularity. Jealousy is normal imo and to be expected but I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that some people probably just don't think Stevie is all that talented. It's not like she's Joni Mitchell or has the voice of Linda Ronstadt. Stevie can't play an instrument, a lot of her demos sound very similar because she knows like 3 chords, she can't really produce a song on her own etc. And like everyone else, she has a lot of great songs but also a lot of duds. And her lyrics can get a bit silly to some people. It probably bugs people that someone who technically isn't the most talented musician managed to get so much popularity, a lot from putting on a chiffon dress and twirling around and talking about the moon.

This honestly might be my favorite post of 2017! Bravo!
At the end of the day, it takes an enormous amount of energy to get where Stevie has gotten. So no matter how she did it, she still did it. I won't take that away from her.
All 5 of these people caused the catapult that has happened to all of their lives. Stevie Nicks was a stunningly beautiful artist in her prime. Her beauty and style were magnetic. And what was great was, back then, she didn't try to be herself. She JUST WAS. She didn't bloviate about how's she is a legend. She just was.. It was really quite something to see.

If you disagree with what I said, that is your right. What I said was my opinion, along with fact. The only difference between Buck/McVie and Nicks is that she is playing bigger venues. Is that wrong? No, simply a fact. So why does that upset you that I said that?
Why so sensitive about it? I'm not saying she's better than them. Inflaming opinions? Really? Because I pointed that out? I do think it's very interesting that 24 Karat Gold bombed, but her tour a year later is so successful. Shocking, really, I think most people were surprised, including Stevie.

To each their own, I guess. Some fans think she's the most important member of the band because she's the only one who achieved a somewhat decent solo career, and what do they use to measure that? Her ability to fill arenas.

Oh, I never denied the fact that it bugs me a lot. She's exactly the kind of person you have described and yet she achieved a popularity noone can deny just by doing those three stupid things you mentioned at the end, when in fact she had the opportunity to learn and do so much more. Wasn't Lindsey the one who once said he didn't understand how people love her so much just by playing the tambourine and twirling around?

Let me know if you find anything. If Lindsey had said anything like that, it would have been the subject of much discussion, much as him teasing her about taking the mic off the stand or comparing them to lounge acts or asking her questions he would not ask Bob Dylan was.

Dude, chill. We're all fans of the same band here. Re-read the way you're typing, because my reading of it is:
"some of you came to our side of the board".
Stevie broke my heart PERIOD. She went on and on about Christine coming back so when she did we assumed an album was a foregone conclusion. She speaks out of her a@s lately. Whatever sounds good in the interview she'll say, and it really rubs me the wrong way the last couple of years. I was the biggest fan until recently. I still love tons of her old songs, but the Stevie today I am not happy with at all.

Mine too. In my book, she is cow dung. She ruined their last album. I could care less about a farewell tour. Why would anyone on this board need to see them again. All she cares about is money from a farewell tour. I won't be there.

She really has become a total egomaniac, and cares nothing about the band that ended her career as a waitress.
I really wish this BuckVie tour would take legs, because THIS is how artists act. They CREATE, and tour(even if not making a ton of dough), for the art. The song. The fans. I couldn't be more excited about seeing them! The only thing that would make it better would be if Mick and John were touring with them. I don't want Stevie there. Because she can't be bothered. Goodbye skank, indeed!
