Who is going? I am excited! I will post a review here early Saturday morning. My flight for Pittsburgh leaves early tomorrow morning. I am surprising my sister on her 50th birthday. I've never done anything like this before but when her birthday was just 2 days before the Stevie concert, I could not resist the trip. Going back to the city where I had my first concert with Stevie in 1983. So its full circle for me.

that's pretty cool. Is your sister going to the show with you? I hope you have a great time. Stevie seems to be really settling into this tour and enjoying it.

Yes I am taking my sister to the show. She is not a huge fan but a casual fan. When Rumours came out her friend up the street had the album. They would play the album and hold their nose and try to sound like Stevie  They were probably around 10 then ;)

I'm going. My first concert was Stevie in 1983 at the Civic Arena. LOL.

Me and my friends are renting a limo. There are 7 of us going. I hope The Pretenders are performing too. I've always wanted to see them. And I want to see the Stop Draggin duet.

I was 11 when Rumors came out. My older brother brought it home one day. I remember the family being confused as to whether Stevie was a dude and Lindsey was a girl or the other way around...LOL:shrug:

Today is the big day! Stevie always says she brings rain to all her shows. Its going to rain all day today in Pittsburgh. I am glad to hear the Pretenders performed in Indy the other night. I would love it if they do a full set tonight. Since Chrissy was sick I doubt we will see her sing with Stevie. They will keep her far away from Stevie so she can finish the tour without risk of getting sick too.

I'm super pumped for the show tonight but I wish it was a bit nicer outside. Geesh! It sure was tough getting up for work today with all this rain. I too am hoping for a full set from the Pretenders but either way its going to be a kick a** show with a huge crowd!

Such a great show! The talking didnt really go over too well but i was happy with it! So much fun! Stop dragging had Chrissie Hynde and then after the show they did it again for the cameras. Talk about a bonus! For me best Stevie show ever but people really hated the talking which is too bad.

Fantastic show. The entire floor was on its feet almost the entire concert. I also got to see Stevie's dogs :)
I feel I had the best seat in the house. I was in the second row in section 121. I waited for weeks before buying my ticket and boy did that pay off. When they opened up seats on the side of the stage, I jumped. It was the second row probably 15 yards away from the stage. The front row was never on sale and last night I found out the reason. The front row was reserved for several people with backstage passes. Members of the crew would come out to greet them and they would go backstage at different times. After the Pretender's set a guy came out holding Stevie's dogs. I am not in Stevie world so I don't know if this was her assistant or her nephew. It was a young guy (late 20s?). He did look like a cross between her brother and Lori so I was guessing it was her nephew who used to tour with her. But he came out to talk to some girls who were locals and the girls brought him drinks. I also could see back stage and see Stevie's boots walking around before she took the stage.
The Pretenders were incredible and flawless. They sound just like it was 1984 all over again. Chrissy is from Ohio and immediately mentioned how much she liked Pittsburgh and what a great crowd it was. She really acknowledged the fans that were on their feet and by the time of Brass in Pocket, THE ENTIRE FLOOR WAS ON ITS FEET. She thanked everyone and once again mentioned she knew it was going to be a good crowd. Chrissy was flawless and you would never know she was sick. She sounded so good. However they did not do their full set. I was looking forward to "I'll Stand By You" but that song is not in their shorter set. The Pretenders came on about 7:10 and were off the stage shortly after 8. Chrissy is such a pro. During "In the middle of the road" her guitar string broke. She put down the guitar and just picked up the microphone while her crew frantically searched for another guitar. During the song she reminded the crew quickly between vocals "can I get another guitar?" Her crew quickly fixed the string and put the guitar back in the stand for her to pick up and she continued on like nothing happened. After a 20 minute break, Stevie took the stage.
There were 2 floating cameras and guys carrying cameras all over the stage and crowd. Stevie was really into the show. I was just a bit disappointed the city was washed of any recognition (I think because of the recording). There was no Pittsburgh post card in the background and no "HELLO PITTSBURGH" Stevie just mentioned that the show was so good that she wanted to record it and "your city was picked."
I must admit that I have stayed away from Stevie solo shows over the years because of her short and redundant sets year after year. When I saw the setlist for this tour, I knew I wanted to go. Gold and Braid was a good opener mostly because the ending has an intense vocal and its nice to hear Stevie have that passion with her vocals again. For that reason, I would say its a good opener. Stevie's voice does not have the range it once had and some songs can almost sound boring live because of this. So glad she dropped Dreams. Chrissy did come out and sing Stop Draggin with Stevie. I enjoyed the story about Belle Fleur because I never heard it before and it was fun to picture Stevie driving an old Toyota around. The song was very good live too. I love Wild Heart and Bella Donna but they should both be full songs instead of one verse. As soon as those songs get going, they stop. But to hear them live is really something because in your wildest dreams you would never imagine it. I am not a huge fan of In Your Dreams and 24k Gold but I must admit she picked some good songs from them to do live. I thought New Orleans would be a tough song to do live but she nailed it. Starshine was a bouncy rocker which is very good live. The only song I was not thrilled with live was "If you were my love." I thought it fell a little flat. Gold Dust Woman was definitely a highlight!!!! I have heard it a million times live and the way it was performed during the Mac's last tour was sensational. Waddy really turned it up and the song was equal to the Mac's performance easy. At the end Stevie actually called herself a crack head looking for drugs. She shook around as much as she could. One interesting part is that she added a second chorus after the first verse. I did not know if this was a flub and her band had to react (that was my first guess) but then I got worried and thought the second verse was going to be cut. But thankfully not which brings me to my only pet peeve of the night. Stevie's most epic live song is Edge of 17. Its a sin to remove the second verse. I mean really. Her second verse is some of her best writing.
I went today maybe I will go again tomorrow
The music there was hauntingly familiar
Well I see you doing what I tried to do for me
With the words of a poet
and a voice from a choir
and a melody, nothing else mattered
(chorus)
The clouds never expect it when it rains
But the sea changes color but the sea does not change
And with the slow graceful flow of age
I went forth with an age old desire to please
on the edge of seventeen (oooooooaaa)
THOSE LINES ARE CUT FROM THE SONG
I don't know how She can cut these epic lines from the epic song. The song had a long intro and long ending. In addition she pretty much added another verse at the end about the nightbird and doves crying, etc. I don't see how removing this 90 seconds of verse makes the song longer with all this added stuff. It really pained me to see and hear this edit.
The crowd was on its feet almost the entire concert. I have never seen a Stevie solo concert with so much energy from the fans. I thought the Mac shows last time were something. Clearly that energy is back. I am so glad I did not get floor seats because unless you are in the first 10 rows its a mess down there. A fan handed Stevie a flower head wreath at the end of Edge of 17 and she wore it and danced around. Pretty cool!

Great review. I was 6 rows back on the floor in section 2 and I didn't even notice Chrissy breaking a guitar string. LOL I agree with everything you said.

I brought some friends with me and they aren't as big of fans as I am and a few liked the talking but most didn't. She needs to shorten up the stories a bit. She said she was nervous because of the filming, but once that settled down she did a great show.

I also agree about Edge of Seventeen. My niece was looking forward to that song and she didn't mention the verse cut, but I noticed it and I think it's a sin. LOL

Yeah I was 7th row floor 1 and and a guy over from me was pissed he yelled shut the f up and sing. He was a jerk! The 4 people next to me left they had it with the talking. I like hearing the stories but she really needs to shorten it up, it totally interrupted the flow of the show. I thought she sounded fantastic though!

Stevie Nicks films Pittsburgh show
By Scott Tady [email protected] Apr 1, 2017 Updated 4 hrs ago 0
Stevie Nicks

Stevie Nicks performs Nov. 6 at Philips Arena in Atlanta.
PITTSBURGH -- Don't worry about those camera drones swooshing over your heads, Stevie Nicks told Pittsburgh fans Friday, explaining for the second time on her tour, she had decided to film her performance.

Throughout her 20-song set, and a repeated post-show bonus tune, Nicks paid attention to those crane-attached cameras, thinking ahead to whatever future TV special or DVD that might result from her PPG Paints Arena performance.

Nicks told stories about nearly every one of those 20 songs, in many cases both before and after singing them. More than a few of those stories dragged on too long, hampering the momentum and flow of her show.

When the film crew edits the footage, they'll notice many fans stayed seated for sizable stretches of time. Even given the late-Gen X-to-baby boomer-prominent audience, that's pretty rare for an arena rock concert.

The footage also will prove that Nicks still has an amazing voice and an unassailable bond with her fans, who stood to dance for her biggest hits, including the satisfying set-ending (well, sort of) run through “Gold Dust Woman,” “Rhiannon” and “Landslide” from her Fleetwood Mac days, and “Edge of Seventeen” from her successful solo career.

Nicks doesn't need Fleetwood Mac anymore. She drew a crowd of 14,500, a veritable sellout for the arena's closed-end stage setup.

“This is not the same Stevie Nicks you've seen a million times,” she told them, unearthing from the vault interesting solo selections, such as "Belle Fleur," "Bella Donna" and "Enchanted."

But you couldn't blame anyone too much for missing, at least a little bit, her Fleetwood Mac bandmates, and the joy that comes with watching Mick Fleetwood, and his wild facial gestures, trying to bash his drums to smithereens, and Lindsey Buckingham dazzling with his finger-picking as one of rock's most underrated guitarists.

Sure, Nicks picked a pretty good lead guitarist for this tour, her old buddy and solo career colleague Waddy Wachtel, who has shined with everyone from Warren Zevon to Keith Richards to Linda Ronstadt.

Wachtel got to cut loose and shred on “Gold Dust Woman” and helped with vocals on “Stop Draggin' My Heart Around,” which also featured Nicks singing with fellow rock goddess Chrissie Hynde, whose band, the Pretenders, delivered an excellent warmup set.

Nicks explained how Tom Petty basically gave her “Stop Draggin' My Heart Around” and agreed to duet on what became a huge hit on Nicks' first solo album.

Another solo hit, “Stand Back,” stood out Friday for its flashy keyboard intro, pounding drums and cool behind-the-scenes story of how Nicks began writing it immediately as she heard on the radio for the first time Prince's “Little Red Corvette.” Her melody was sort of an answer to Prince's, Nicks said, challenging fans to pick out the similarities next time they hear “Stand Back.”

Nicks' numerous stories Friday whisked the audience from a recording session in a French castle, to her Santa Monica home overlooking the sea. She talked about hanging with Petty and Prince, and having an assistant, and graduating to limousines (after years in a beat-up Toyota that couldn't travel in reverse gear.) For one segment, Nicks wore on stage the same fringe silk chiffon cape she wore in 1982, which she said originally cost $2,000.

Such is a lifestyle all but a small percentage of people can only dream of, though her female fans still relate to Nicks. Maybe it's vicariously, maybe it's simple appreciation for her days as a strong female rock icon from an era that didn't have nearly enough of them.

Whatever the reason, the Pittsburgh faithful listened patiently as Nicks sang “New Orleans” about the post-Katrina resoluteness of the Crescent City, then her “Twilight” movie-inspired “Moonlight (A Vampire's Dream)." Those fans realized that soon enough they'd get the chance to stand, sing and dance to “Gold Dust Woman,” with all its alluring imagery, menacing bass, drums and guitar, and Nicks' one-of-a-kind sultry rasp.

“Gypsy,” five songs in, earned the first of a few patented Nicks twirls with outstretched arms. Some fans wore frilly, fringe-y capes and gypsy jewelry like Nicks, whose four or so costume changes included a golden shawl and a white fur-ish coat.

As the show reached its end, Nicks thanked the audience for its support and letting her perform deep cuts, like "Wild Heart" and the Buckingham Nicks number “Crying in the Night,” both of which made their live debuts on this tour.

“It's been like starting over for me,” Nicks said, encouraging the audience to follow its dreams, noting hers are still coming true at the age of 68.

Another long story preceded the fan favorite "Landslide," which has been the recent show-closer.

As fans had been advised before Nicks first took the stage a few hours earlier, she came back out and sang "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" for a second time, as cameras zoomed in to capture more video footage. By then, maybe one-third of the crowd already began heading toward the exits.

So let's salute her career and the fans who gave her the chance to do the tour she's long wanted to do, as we all hope her next visit is back with Fleetwood Mac.

And bring back Hynde and the Pretenders for a headlining show, maybe at Heinz Hall or Stage AE. Their wonderful 45-minute set flew by too quickly, spearheaded by hits "Back on the Chain Gang," "Don't Get Me Wrong," "My City Was Gone," "Middle of the Road" and "Brass in Pocket" and their Kinks cover "Stop Your Sobbing." Hynde's voice sounded strong as ever, and the band, with founding drummer Martin Chambers and terrific guitarist James Walbourne, played their familiar catalog with an ideal mix of faithfulness to the original recordings with a few dashes of fresh interpretation.

Concert review: Stevie Nicks, Pretenders set the gold standard in Pittsburgh

http://i.imgur.com/xER10fs.jpg

Wasn't Stevie Nicks one of the quiet ones in Fleetwood Mac?

She isn't now. All that stage banter saved up over the decades is spilling out on the 24 Karat Gold Tour, where she talks for 24 minutes between songs.

Ok, not really. I kid the diva (at my own peril!). It’s more like four minutes, and despite her bewitching image, she's not a diva at all, in the negative sense. We hesitate to apply the term “down to earth” to Stevie Nicks, because she seems to be hovering above it, but she's actually very sweet (I spoke with her on the phone years ago and she’s the kind of person who asks YOU questions about yourself).

This tour, which began in October and hit the PPG Paints Arena Friday on its second leg, is very much about her and how she came to be a star in and out of Fleetwood Mac. It's a “storytellers” tour without using that word, and on Friday night it was being filmed for posterity, giving it the feel of a live documentary in the making.

The odd thing about that is that usually people do the storyteller thing in an intimate theater setting, not a packed arena, here on a Girls’ Night Out Friday.

For starters, she brought along an old friend in Chrissie Hynde, the tough rocker from Akron, Ohio, fronting the latest version of the Pretenders, a band that emerged in the punk era of the late ‘70s as a counter-punch to the FM-friendly likes of Fleetwood Mac.

Clearly, the two Rock and Roll Hall of Famers love each other now, and Hynde even said “I love you, Stevie” after dedicating a beautiful version of the feminist ballad “Hymn to Her” to the headliner, along with all the rest of the songs in the set. The musical bond would jell even more later.

This concert was well placed on the calendar because over the last week Hynde has been canceling shows with a respiratory ailment, but in Pittsburgh (which she praised as a city that’s held on to its past) she seemed to be feeling no ill effects. The 65-year-old’s voice is still a wonder to behold — rich, sexy, forceful — and she cut a sharp figure in tight pants, boots and a sleeveless Recycled Records T-shirt. For this occasion, she settled on the nicer, mid-tempo Pretenders songs like “Back on the Chain Gang,” “Talk of the Town” and “Message of Love,” rather than such punk ragers as “Precious” and “The Wait.”

She actually seemed to care if Stevie’s fans liked her, and most did, but far too many were flooding in the aisles, just getting to their seats or getting up for beers, and with no real urgency.

Backed by one original Pretender in drummer Martin Chambers (Brits Pete Farndon and James Honeyman-Scott tragically died young) they added a pair of songs from new album “Alone” (including the bluesy, fuzzed-out title track) and finished with a solid run of “Stop Your Sobbing,” “My City Was Gone,” “Middle of the Road” and a typically sassy “Brass in Pocket.” Along the way, James Walbourne, of Pernice Brothers and Son Volt fame, provided the best guitar heroics of the whole night.

Stevie did not follow that by strutting out with one of her radio warhorses. She arrived in black lacy dress, cape and fingerless gloves, offset by her golden hair, on a gorgeously illuminated stage with deep cut “Gold and Braid,” setting the tone for a concert culled from what she described as the “dark Gothic trunk of lost songs.”

After following that with ‘80s synth-rocker “If Anyone Falls,” she said, “This is not the same Stevie Nicks show you’ve seen a million times, because I’m not the same Stevie Nicks you've seen a million times.”

In the good ways she is, though, because she is remarkably well preserved at 68, including that beguiling voice that can be at once lovely and dissonant.

The storyline centered on balancing her solo career with her day job in Fleetwood Mac. Being one of three singer-songwriters in that superstar band (with former flame Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie), there was, and is, the Beatles-like dilemma of getting your songs on the album.

When she decided in late 1980 to go solo with “Bella Donna,” “I wasn’t going to be like Beyoncé and break up my band,” she said, wisely appending that statement with praise and respect for the Queen. “I got Fleetwood Mac in a room and said, ‘Fleetwood Mac, I want to do a solo album, but it won't hurt us at all. It will only keep us in the spotlight while you're on vacation.’ ”

Providing some of the spark for that was Tom Petty handing her the smash single “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” a contender for best rock duet of all time, and on the PPG stage, her sidekick guitarist Waddy Wachtel had to be pinching himself to be in a threesome with Stevie and Chrissie, singing, “I know you BOTH wanna be your own girl.” It was one of those thrilling concert moments you can talk about for years, punctuated with a high-five photo op at the end.

Nicks continued with trunk songs from 2014’s “24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault,” like the bright Petty-and-the-Heartbreakers-assisted rocker “Starshine” and the seductive “Belle Fleur,” interspersed with hits like “Gypsy,” ending with one of her signature spins that drive fans wild.

With each song came a long story, about recording with Fleetwood Mac in an old French castle with no ice, or calling Prince for help on “Stand Back,” a song inspired by hearing “Little Red Corvette.” It took an hour to get his number and, because he was in LA not Minneapolis, it took less than that for His Purple Majesty to show up at the studio and add keys and guitar to the future hit.

She climaxed the 2 1/2-hour set with an enchanting “Gold Dust Woman,” complete with a frantic dance in the full-moon backdrop, and an electrifying “Edge of Seventeen,” with the guitars rumbling like propellers and Nicks spreading her vintage black cape like a nightbird.

She encored with the double Mac pleasure of a “Rhiannon” that rocked and a “Landslide” that displayed her tender touch with a ballad. For the purposes of the film, they returned to recut “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” with just Stevie and Waddy.

The 24 Karat format, and her occasional exits from the stage, surely interrupted the flow of the music (and there are bound to be complaints), but Stevie Nicks is still the gold standard, and her faithful fans got to know her a little better on Friday night.

In the end, she thanked them profusely for sitting through the stories and trunk songs, like the diva she is not.

Final thoughts.
I think this is the best Stevie solo tour since Enchanted. Her heart is really into this tour and the set list is very good. If you are on the fence about going, I would highly suggest you go.
Interesting that the Pittsburgh show sold out. That may be a first for her. She almost sold out in 1986 and 1989. I have heard some of the song stories many times. But the newer songs I was not overly familiar with the stories so I enjoyed them. My sister is a very casual fan but she enjoyed them too.
I personally think Prince was a jerk for the way he treated people and I am over Stevie's Prince stories. But it was touching when she said that she was someone that many were concerned enough to watch over her for being so out of control. She said he cared enough to watch over her.

I remember reading in an interview with actress Zooey Deschanel that for the episode of New Girl in which Prince guest starred and did her a make-over he actually wanted her to look like Stevie and personally choosed her outfit. I think he truly cared for Stevie after all.

Something just made sense to me. The shortened Pretenders set probably has nothing to do that Crissy was sick before. Its to make more time for Stevie's recording. In Pittsburgh the Pretenders only did a 50 min set. Stevie came out after the encores to do SDMHA one more time. I wonder if when the recording is over if the Pretenders will go back to a 15 song set list.

STEVIE NICKS STILL ROCKS!

STEVE NICKS’ 24 KARAT GOLD TOUR

https://geeksburgh.files.wordpress.com/2017/04/stevie-nicks-tour.jpg

I’M GOING TO GUSH ABOUT STEVIE’S CONCERT.

I grew up to the music of Stevie Nicks. One of my personal goals is to see icons in concert. After we lost so many performers in 2016, I reaffirmed this goal. (Luckily I had seen Bowie and Prince years ago). Stevie’s 24 Karat Gold Tour fulfilled all my ideas of what it would be. Not only did she perform many of her hits, but she brought out what she called songs from her “dark Gothic trunk of lost songs.” In between songs she shared with us about her time with Lindsey Buckingham before Fleetwood Mac, how-when-why she wrote certain songs, and why she hasn’t performed certain songs ever and why she is performing them now.

My friends and I felt like we were sitting at a coffee shop hearing the details of a long lost Aunt’s life. Even though we were in a huge area and sitting fairly far away, she was so sweet and open and a little nervous at times, it felt intimate. She was just as magnificent as you would want her to be, dressed like a Gothic Enchantress, changing capes and scarves frequently. Her voice was melodic and husky. She did her signature spin a few times to uproarious applause.

Chrissy Hynde and The Pretenders opened the show. Chrissy sounded great. She came out and sang with Stevie on “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.” Very cool. It’s worth noting that they started close to the time on the ticket which is fairly unusual. Most concerts I’ve been to in the last few years start at least 30 mins after ticket time and the headliner is on a good 45-60 mins after the opener. So if you go to this tour and the tickets says 7pm, get there well before 7pm so as not to miss anything.

A plea to the drunks: Some people were drunk and obnoxious (as people often are at concerts) and screamed and yelled for Stevie to “sing” while she was talking. It was horribly annoying and rude. If you go to a concert, please don’t be obnoxious. If you don’t like the performance you can storm out and demand a refund or write a terrible review, but please don’t ruin it for the rest of the audience.

I’m including a few videos I took from far away with my crappy phone. The picture isn’t great, but you can hear how wonderful she sounds. Enjoy.

If you’d like to watch these and a video of Moonlight on YouTube, go to my channel GeeksBurgh (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCd4cvlfVqSANY9jaSe4oFjQ).

Thanks to Stevie and her band and the whole team for giving us a memorable performance.

Thanks for reading.

that makes complete sense because in newark they werent filming and Pretenders did 14 songs.

I heard someone mention that this may be released in August. Does anyone know if this is confirmed?

August seems way too early. If Soundstage of another program airs it on TV, we'll be lucky to see it before November. A DVD would likely be released a few months after the initial airing. Just a guess based on other events like this.

Lol, well Stevie really doesn't have much of a say when it will air...

True. But she DOES have a say when it comes to the program's content. For the 2009 release of PBS Soundstage, she flew to Nashville to re-record certain songs and overdub a few lines here and there. She's a perfectionist. She takes her sweet a** time with things far too often, in my opinion.

It took two years from when the PBS Soundstage was filmed in 2007 til when it was released on DVD, Blu-Ray and CD in 2009, although I think it actually premiered on PBS in the Fall of 2008 if I'm remembering correctly. Somebody fact check me, please.

That being said, the Soundstage "special" was ALWAYS intended to be a "one off" show recorded for posterity. Attendees knew this. They knew they would be there for hours and hours and hours while she did a few takes of each song over and over again. That's the nature of that kind of "event". I was at the Wynonna Judd/Heart CMT Crossover special and we were there for about four hours that night while the girls recorded each song about two or three times...some with false starts...

But I'm getting off topic. My question now is will this new show be more like Fleetwood Mac's "Live in Boston" for the SYW tour - a filmed live arena concert that maybe wouldn't require a lot of post production work?

I would like it to be sooner, but you guys are probably right. Stevie does usually take a while with releases.

Stevie Nicks' '24 Karat Gold' shines in Pittsburgh

After a run of tour dates last fall, iconic solo artist and Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks hasn't run out of songs to pull out of her "Gothic trunk," which she brought to Pittsburgh's PPG Paints Arena last Friday as her tour in support of 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault continues.

Following opener The Pretenders, Nicks began with "Gold and Braid," the opener to a two-hour set of mostly lesser-known songs that spanned her career--from the early days of Buckingham Nicks to now--and included Nicks' personal stories behind them, such as "New Orleans" written after Hurricane Katrina and the Twilight-inspired "Moonlight." Although 24 Karat Gold is an ideal tour for Nicks fans who want to hear more than top-charting singles, it's not devoid of those--Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde joined Nicks for a rendition of "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," originally performed with Tom Petty, and Nicks used the powerhouse "Edge of Seventeen" to pay tribute to Prince.

Despite being a solo tour, Nicks still made room in the setlist for Fleetwood Mac hits like "Gypsy" and crowd favorite "Gold Dust Woman," performed with a gold shawl and Nicks' well-known erratic dancing, and an encore of "Rhiannon" and beloved "Landslide."

Nicks' fans are sure to enjoy spending an evening with the singer on her 24 Karat Gold Tour, with her performance, charming personality, and, of course, that distinct voice.
