Christine McVie: “Fleetwood Mac’s 2018 tour is supposed to be a farewell tour”

McVie and Lindsey Buckingham reveal all about their collaboration in our exclusive interview

Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham discuss the future of Fleetwood Mac and their new collaborative album in the new issue of Uncut, on sale in UK shops and available to buy digitally.

The pair’s debut as Buckingham McVie – also featuring Mick Fleetwood and John McVie – is set for release this summer.

“I’ve grown up a lot since the last time I really worked with [Christine],” explains Buckingham. “I realised: ‘Oh, here I am, a completely different person. I’m a father of three children. I’ve been married almost 20 years. I’ve had my journey, and Christine has had her own journey.’”

However, the singer, keyboardist and songwriter also reveals that the future of Fleetwood Mac is far from certain.

“The 2018 tour is supposed to be a farewell tour,” says McVie. “But you take farewell tours one at a time. Somehow we always come together, this unit. We can feel it ourselves.”

Buckingham and McVie are on the cover of the new Uncut, dated May 2017 and on sale March 16.

great stuff! I'm hanging by a thread to read the last section!!

The only bits that gave me a little pause was the reference to a Beach Boys sound on one of Chris' songs.... I find LB can sometimes impose his own sound on stuff rather than honor the underlying origins, and her blues edge on some stuff gets lost (it sounds like the song they were talking about was actually his and she added lyrics to it which is fine....but thinking of her stuff more generally).

Oh and as for his lyrics on Tusk being obscure and hard to know what they were about , that gave me a chuckle. So many of them were full-on anger at Stevie ("you're here because I say so", "what makes you think I'm the one who will love you forever?" "you can love me baby but you can't walk out" etc etc etc). Maybe the title song, but.....

Can.not.wait. for this album to come out. And I hope they play here coz I'm there regardless of price.

I feel your pain. It's really hard to believe the Dance came out 20 years ago this August. Tango 30 years... I can believe that because it came out a week after my twin girls were born and their turning 30 next week. I would listen to the cassette tape of Big Love/ You and I pt 1 non stop on the way to the hospital visiting my wife and little girls.

I listened to this great David Wild podcast from around a year ago and he said something similar to that. The Dance concert was a huge moment in his life because it was when his wife was giving birth, plus it was just an amazing time.

McVie’s plans aren’t quite so far along, but she knows what she’d like to do next. “If I do another solo album, it’ll be a blues record. Not necessarily my own songs, either. I would like to dig deep into the really unknown blues records and get some great blues musicians on it. I’d probably have John and Mick on it as well, since they come from that English blues era. It’s something I would love to do if I have the time and if I don’t die first. I’m pretty healthy, so I should be fine.”

i'm hoping not, but you are probably right and that actually sounds completely feasible. Warners has been stifling to LB solo. i hope retrospective he talks about will be indie and that it's a way to pull some of those songs out of Warners and give them new life. but i do know he wanted to do a box set for a while and was stuck because Warners owns most of his solo catalog and as a non-commercial artist they would not be interested in any solo box sets.

i guess most bands and artists i follow. most bands also play much more of Europe than just UK/Ire, some Scandinavia and Germany. southern, middle or eastern Europe don't exist in Mac's book.

I noted, but it's an ... interesting turn of phrase. I note that there are quite a few musicians who are quite active in their 70s, and wonder if some of them at least are getting on with things that they'd like to do in case it becomes too late.

interesting excerpt from Play On quoted in the article -

As Mick Fleetwood writes in his 2014 memoir, Play On: “We worked on all of those songs as a group for a few weeks until they became fully realised. Each day the energy built and the excitement grew because it was like being in a boot camp where everyone was so focused that results happened quickly. Lindsey and Christine were two musicians who fell in with each other immediately; it was a departure for him, as he’d been used to working only with a poet. Whereas a lot of what Lindsey did for Stevie was interpretation, building musical soundscapes for the stories she told so beautifully in her lyrics, Chris’s songwriting came from the blues and got right to the point. Lindsey took that and ran.”

This is so telling how their relationship is about great chemistry. Versus one of fake publicity and/or some soap opera story for kids carry on about. It's about the music. After all, they are musicians. Lindsey finally didn't have to deal with. "Here make this a song for me."

This is so telling how their relationship is about great chemistry. Versus one of fake publicity and/or some soap opera story for kids carry on about. It's about the music. After all, they are musicians. Lindsey finally didn't have to deal with. "Here make this a song for me."

well that's not entirely accurate, is it? In fact, Stevie has developed a pretty strong sense of how she wants her songs to come out since she's moved into a solo career some 36 years ago. Her frustration these days comes from the fact that Lindsey still tends to think it's 1979 and that his interpretation of how her songs should go is better than hers. He hasn't been able to fully embrace listening to her vision for her songs. Granted she doesn't have the same technical skill or vocabulary to communicate her ideas but she knows what she wants ..... but within FM it's become a thing to not rock LB's boat about production.

If you noticed on SYW she didn't come in with really bare songwriting demos...i.e., just her and the piano and no idea how she wanted to make them into commercial records as in the past. She came in with full DEMOS with her idea for how she wanted them to sound. In fact if you watch the SYW doc when LB hears them he says to her something about "I like what he did with that, there's some stuff there I can just use" i.e. take what she created with whoever she arranges her demos with and basically take credit as producer on the album for having come up with every possible piece of how her songs were put together. That drives her nuts as well. He might polish things up but she doesn't ask him to be the ground-up producer of her rawest material anymore nor has she for some time. She brings solid ideas and he tweaks them. Which is what a producer is PAID to do. It's what Jimmy Iovine did for Tom's albums, or what George Martin did for the Beatles, etc. No one discounts those guys' abilities just because they collaborated. Yet when Stevie works with a producer she's an amateur.

Stevie and Lindsey have never found that spot where each can get the credit for what they brought to the table. She has given him credit as a producer from the get-go acknowledging his role back as far as the first couple FM albums. But for decades he didn't in interviews etc really acknowledge her talent as a writer.. and if so it was always this backhanded thing like "I was the one who would take Stevie's songs, whatever they were, and turn them into records". The "whatever they were" always said with a sort of dismissive smirkiness for which I did not like him for a long, long time. He's gotten better since the 2000s.

On the other hand I agree with you about the fake soap opera crap onstage.

I have to say, I was impressed with Illume, Running, Thrown Down. I do have to give her credit. She came in and played those tunes for him, Mick and John.

But that leads to another issue.

The album initially started out as a Lindsey solo album, which meant he had the challenge of taking her songs and making them cohesive with his mostly finished songs. I mean, I feel bad for Stevie, but SYW would have sounded even more disjointed had Lindsey not made those changes.

That's why I'm so excited about this project. They actually wrote together going back and forth. Lindsey let Christine take his material and do something with it. That's amazing for him. And then he admitted she came up with something better than what he would have come up with.

A true collaboration.

so Christine let go of her green card when she retired back to the UK in the 90s. no wonder they re-recorded Sleeping around the corner! getting her papers in order is probably completely apt for her again right now!

Seriously, what odd lyrics from Lindsey.

maybe they left it raw on purpose... I think overall the photographer didn't do a very good job.

None of us can forget the great airbrushing tragedies that have befallen Christine, starting with The Dance cover. Oh, the horrors.

yes. i listened to that song again yesterday, and thought about that. i'm wondering whether they changed the lyrics now, updated them maybe? because some of the lyrics in that particular song were really clunky, but the whole paper and border were odd and intriguing. as was his British phrasing (never meant to give you a frown or 'round the corner).

so i pulled lyrics from the net http://www.fleetwoodmac-uk.com/stillgoinginsane/albums/seedswesow_lyrics.html (thank you fmfanuk!) -

Sleeping Around The Corner

She called to me
Meet me at the border
Wake me up when my papers are in order

Lord I dont want to bring you down
No, I never meant to give you a frown
I'm just sleeping around the corner

Lord I dont want to bring you down
No, I never meant to give you a frown
I'm just sleeping around the corner

We made sweet love over and over
She said oh sweet darling
I'm your little red rover

Lord I dont want to bring you down
No, I never meant to give you a frown
I'm just sleeping around the corner

She said to me, I dont mean to scorn you
But I'm been lying
And I've been too scared to warn you

Lord I dont want to bring you down
No, I never meant to give you a frown
I'm just sleeping around the corner

Lord I dont want to bring you down
No, I never meant to give you a frown
I'm just sleeping around the corner

yes but once it became a FM album, why did one person's songs unilaterally have to be made to fit the style of other person's? Why not tweak some of both??

Lindsey's solo songs were tweaked. And not for the better. Most of the original versions of his songs were the better ones, but he changed them to make them more Macky.

Although, I do love Miranda and what Stevie adds to Miranda. Miranda, Thrown Down and EFO are my favorite songs on the album.

hmmmm.... adding Stevie's vocals was really the bulk of it. Having listened to both versions, I don't hear much else changed.

I was referring more to the previous comment about making her songs "fit" stylistically with his in terms of arrangement/production. There wasn't quite the same concern, IMHO, for making his songs stylistically like hers.

Doubtful either of their songs would benefit from being force-fit to the other's style....hence the dissatisfaction with some of her songs on DR.

Now with THAT said, kudos to him for the arrangement on Destiny Rules.

His songs weren't made to match Stevie's stylistically, but I do think they were changed to match Fleetwood Mac more stylistically and had less of an edge than the Gift of Screws demos promised.

I agree with bombaysaffires, the only difference I hear in Lindsey's songs are added Stevie vocals. Otherwise they seem exactly the same. Some of them don't even have Stevie on them. I was familiar with the solo versions first and I've never noticed any other differences. I believe in the documentary he even mentions that adding Stevie was all that needed to be done to his songs.

On Morrow, for instance, it seems to me like the mix on SYW is different than what it was in Lindsey's original versions.

As are almost all of his songs on SYW. I fear for the BMcV album, it will be half Lindsey and thus likely about 50% skip tracks. Extended Play was an example of what we might be looking at...

yeah, which makes me slightly worried for that Lindsey solo album that's coming out at the end of the year, because it's probably built on top of those songs they recorded in 2012. then again, he's been adding songs ever since, and even his GOS group of songs is very diverse, from fleetwood macy ones through very different much edgier songs. so i'm glad he decided to release those too and very soon. two albums of new songs in one year is definitely pretty fantastic!

Miss Fantasy and It Takes Time has grown on me, too. I'm not crazy about Sad Angel or Without You.
i think Sad Angel is the strongest of the bunch, without question. but i do have a soft spot fro Miss Fantasy and It Takes Time. it was clear however that the release at the should have been just SA and MF, and the other 2 songs were haphazardly added the last second.

This is completely different since the songs are largely cowritten. Lindseys songs were mostly my faves from SYW though, personally.
yes. as usual mitzo's pesky comments regarding Lindsey or his music are highly amusing.

same, WTWCT is really bad in my book, and Stevi's nasal additions to it make iteven worse. i also dislike Say Goodbye. but i think BTLH is high up there on the list of greet songs. of Stevie's i really only like Destiny Rules a lot.

I know we already said this initially, but now that the album and tour is getting coverage I have to say Buckingham McVie is a horrible name for them. Five clunky syllables. I can't even call them that aloud. Lindsey & Chris would have been better. Or even BuckVie, like we've been saying.
