There is no prevailing animosity in Fleetwood Mac over Stevie Nicks’ decision to continue with her solo endeavors, including tour dates, according to drummer and co-founder Mick Fleetwood.
In Austin, Texas to speak Wednesday (March 15) at the South By Southwest music conference, Fleetwood acknowledged that the upcoming duo project by Mac members Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie dubbed Buckingham McVie, was partly caused by Nicks’ decision not to join her bandmates in the studio during the past couple of years. But he says that’s something Fleetwood Mac has grown used to over the years:
“She’s doing what she loves to do, and that’s nothing new. She’s been in and out of Fleetwood Mac doing her thing, and she truly has more than anyone a profoundly different level of a career outside of Fleetwood Mac…and that’s nothing new. She’s busy and happy doing what she does and she always comes home to roost….This happened so many times before and stuff, and I say never say never in terms of Fleetwood Mac is alive and well…There’s certainly a vision that next year we’ll all probably be heading towards doing that work as a band.”
There’s no official release date yet for the Buckingham McVie album, while a deluxe edition of the group’s 1987 release Tango In The Night is due out March 24. Fleetwood Mac is rumored to be played a pair of Classic Rock festivals with the Eagles this summer, but Fleetwood would not comment on that.
Fleetwood is in Austin to launch the campaign for is new book, Love That Burns: A Chronicle of Fleetwood Mac Volume One: 1967-1974, which is being published September 19 by Britain's Genesis Publications.

I don't like the "there's no official release date" part. I wish they had added, "but the album is expected to drop some time in May."

"doing that work next year as a band...." says Mick. So does that mean all 5 of them will be recording a new record, or just ANOTHER tour? I'm broke as a joke so I can't see them in concert and would much rather have new music. Sounds crazy but they all should take a break from touring (especially Stevie!) Other than that comment, nothing in this article seems like real news to us fans....:distress:

Unfortunately, I think it means another tour without new music. Stevie's made it pretty clear that she doesn't want to spend a year in the studio being unhappy making an album that won't ultimately sell.
And I can't imagine Buckingham McVie coughing up another ten songs between them in so short a time.
But hey, I would LOVE another full-band album, in addition to the duo album we're supposed to be getting. I just want that release date for the duo album firmed up very very soon.

Good lort, what a drama queen(her and Madame Fleetwood both).
A YEAR? Yeah, maybe for Lindsey, and a few months for Mick, John, and Chris.
Wasn't she THREE WEEKS in the studio on Tango?
What an idiot...
Could the lack of an actual release date for the Buckingham McVie album mean it might be shelved in favour of an actual Mac album next year? Could the reference to Lindsey and Christine being "dubbed Buckingham McVie" mean that it won't be the title of the project if it is indeed released? The article does refer to the "upcoming duo project" so I hope that is an indication it will still be released.

I think the cover story for Uncut magazine shows it is 99.9% certain the B-M album will be coming out. My hope would be they are still sorting out logistics for live shows and other promotion and they want to withhold release until everything is fully in place.
I must remember to pick up a copy of Uncut.

I don't keep track of Stevie's solo career anymore. I actually didn't know she was in Austin this past Sunday until I heard radio commercials for it the week prior. I also hardly check the Rumours forum these days because there's no new music and lots of unhappy people.

Mick said it was being released in May and alluded to a tour that he would not be a part of.

Louie, in the past you once said you would never go see SN live again until she changed her set list. This tour is a dream set list and I had wondered if you attended the Austin show. Now I know and it's a shame you let the opportunity pass you by, IMO.

Unfortunately, I'm starting to feel this way, too. I don't want to believe that this is the way Stevie feels because I'm such a huge fan, but I can't help feeling disappointed at her attitude about never recording again ever, and honestly I'm a little pissed off. You can add me to that list of unhappy people on here. :(
But I am glad that she has such a rich discography because I still listen to all her music solo and with FM all the time! :-) Just kinda have to hold on and cherish her legacy, I guess...

It's been that way for me since "Behind the Mask" came out. It was obvious to me back then that she wasn't making Fleetwood Mac a major priority as far as albums go (how she didn't do "Whole Lotta Trouble" with four of the best blues musicians is beyond me). And, I still kind of feel that way. Her Mac songs between 1975-82 were all classics, and most of her Mac songs 1987 onward range between unlistenable to very good.

I don't agree with many of her comments as of lately at all. Sales shouldn't matter at this point and I wish she would have done some recording with FM for a final album. I absolutely adore her last two solo albums and think she still has it in her to contribute some great tunes and vocals for an FM album. I don't hate her and won't stop listening to her music. But I wish she felt differently.

I loved 24K Gold. Thought it was one of her best solo albums ever, however, I don't really like her anymore. She keeps belittling her own band and building other bands like the Heartbreakers up. She is always blaming her failures on Lindsey and yet, he made her a star. She is spoiled and self centered. She won't record with Fleetwood Mac even though it would only be a month out of her life. Plus, she is just fake - all the fake praise for Glee, Twilight... she is not real, she is always conniving.
The big reason is though is I can't stand her belittling her band mates anymore. What kind of person is she? Certainly not trustworthy. She is coming to Columbus Ohio and I won't be there. She has pretty much lost me.

Well I can say "everybody is different" and I honestly don't listen to much of anything Stevie did before the Tusk era. I was born in 1986 and I was brought up on 80's and 90's music and that would put everything from Mirage to the TISL era in that category. Wether we as fans like it or not, Stevie is and always has been influenced by current music and her output from these eras shows that. So your second category hits home with me more than your first, and a lot of that may have to do with the fact that a lot of those 1975-1982 songs are just overplayed and overrated, but for fans my age and younger, we might just find the second era of 1987 and on more fascinating and intriguing because they reflect their time period. Klonopin or no klonopin, and also, maybe I'm over analyzing this
And I have to add, She was already around 40 years old in the late 80's and back then that seemed ancient. Today, though, it doesn't seem that way. She had a lot of "Co–writes" during this period, but it was probably because of burn out and the klonopin, and age. And she lacked inspiration during this time. Drugs have a lot to do with the "quality" of the songs throughout a music career with longevity, and it will show. After 1986, cocaine was no longer in the picture, and all of a sudden, tranquilizers were. But I can't deny the fact, that I like A LOT of her material from 1986-87 onward. But again, like I said, it's probably because it's not over played and overrated like her stuff from 1975-83. Just my 2 cents.

To be fair you could say this about anyone when they get past their prime. Their weaknesses come out. I agree a lot of Stevie's more recent songs are just missing something that her earlier work had but I also think that while Lindsey can still write a good piece, he's got too many noises in his head so he veers towards overproducing. Really you could say it for probably the majority of older artists. Like Paul McCartney for example, he's literally Paul McCartney, but except for his collab with Rihanna and Kanye West, I don't think he's done anything really that great for a very long time.

YES! ITA!
Aside from what you wrote, I got lost during IYD and still have to vent about it. :)
The cover alone, Stevie with a white horse, a cover from a young adult romance novel, I did not buy this **** for over a year, just because I don't want this kind of adolescent bull**** near me. But I listened to the album, I really WANTED to like it. She sings duets with Dave Stewart, who also produced - she must be deaf, probably a sideeffect from touring so much. There is no memorable tune at all. When a duet with Lindsey Buckingham is the only acceptable song on an album, I know it's a really bad album (I really don't care for Lindsey as a singer, but he is gold when DS comes in).
AND then the lyrics: Vampires, Twilight? It wasn't that she wasn't even trying, it looked like a bad-writing contest against herself, is she internally 15 or what?
What irks me now is the fact that for all her talk about money, she obviously had no idea who her target group/her fans are when she did IYD. Adoloscents don't buy a Stevie album, period. Noone else could stomach that one.

"Tusk" sold 2 million in 1979 and produced 2 top ten singles. "Bella Donna" sold 5 million since 1981 and produced 2 top ten singles, and one top 15. "Mirage" sold 2 million in 1982 and produced 1 top ten and one top 20 single. "The Wild Heart" sold 2 million since 1983, produced a top ten single and one top 15. "Rock a little" sold a million in 1985 and produced one top ten single and one top 20. "Tango in the night sold 3 million since 1987 and produced 2 top ten singles and 2 more top 20 hits. " The other side of the mirror" sold one million since 1989 and one top 20 hit. "Behind the Mask" sold 500,000 in 1990 and no top 30 hits. " Street Angel" peaked at #45 in 1994 and sold poorly but later certified gold. " The Dance" sold about 5 million since 1997. "Trouble in Shangri la" sold about 650,000 since 2001 and "Say you will" about 800,000 since 2003. All these figures are approximant and US sales, not worldwide totals. I'm only including albums released just before her solo career launched and afterwards.

Default Stevie in Q Magazine (March, 2017)
10 COMMANDMENTS: STEVIE NICKS - Q Magazine, March 2017
THE FLEETWOOD MAC SINGER DELIVERS HER GOLDEN RULES FOR LIVING.
1 MAKE LIKE A BOY OR GIRL SCOUT: BE PREPARED
I’m scared, that’s what I am. Before shows, some people – me, Mick [Fleetwood, [ drummer], we get panic attacks. I have always been terribly nervous before shows. So I am so rehearsed and ready that I could be dead and stand up there and still sing the right words and do the right thing. Cocaine almost killed me. It’s better to just not do it. Eventually you’ll have to stop so start saving your money for rehab now.
2 THE DRUGS DON’T WORK, THEY JUST MAKE IT WORSE
Touring with Fleetwood Mac in the ’70s, cocaine was almost part of the daily routine. But when I talk about it now, I would never want the kids of today to think that I’m saying it was something good. Cos it really wasn’t something good. It almost destroyed my life. It almost killed me, and almost killed a lot of people I know. So if anybody thinks it’s safe now – it’s not. It’s better to just not do it. Because you will eventually have to stop, so start saving your money for rehab now. It’s so expensive.
3 LYRICISTS! WATCH YOUR CUSS WORDS
I’ve been listening to The Weeknd’s records. I play them one after the other when I’m in my bathroom getting ready to go out, or just hanging out with myself. He’s brilliant. And his voice – he could have come straight out of 1975 – he could have been like Stevie Winwood. He’s over-talented. But if I were to meet him, I would probably say: “You say over and over again words that I would prefer you didn’t say. I think they’re unnecessary. However, even though I think a lot of your songs are super-dirty, I still really like ’em! So I’ve given you a pass on that!”
4 SINGERS! WATCH YOUR SYLLABLES
I saw Adele at the Grammys [Adele had to restart a performance of George Michael’s Fastlove], and that song was a very hard song to sing for George Michael. It’s all about the syllables. I have a song on my 24 Karat Gold album, Mabel Normand, that’s exactly the same. That’s the reason we’re not doing it onstage. Because if you take a breath, you get off the beat. You’re one word too late, you can never get back on, and you’re dead in the water.
5 YOU’RE A ROCK STAR – THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A SICKIE
Onstage is the one time you can’t bemoan how you feel. Even if you have pneumonia, you have to say: “I’m leaving that in the dressing room and I’m walking out and I’m gonna be great. And when I come offstage, then I can burst into tears.”
6 WRITING TIMELESS POP OR EPIC FANTASY – EACH IS AS HARD AS THE OTHER
I love Game Of Thrones. [Author Author] George RR Martin is my age [68 ] and it blows my mind that he’s able to create this vast, interlinked world. As a songwriter I write little movies, but I can’t imagine writing even one small book. But then, probably, somebody like him would say, “I couldn’t imagine writing Landslide.”
7 DON’T FEAR THE PRODUCER
In the 24 Karat Gold show, I’m singing songs that are new old songs – the ones that should have gone on [Fleetwood Mac’s] Tusk and Tango In The Night, and on [solo albums] Bella Donna, The Wild Heart and Rock A Little. And they didn’t: not because they weren’t good enough, but because I didn’t like how they were done at the time. I didn’t like the producers’ concept, whether it was Lindsey [Buckingham, Fleetwood Mac bandmate] or Jimmy Iovine. So I pulled them. So the way the songs are recorded on 24 Karat Gold is exactly how they were done as demos.
8 LEARN FROM THE GREATS. AND TAKE FROM THE GREATS
I give Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and [Jefferson Airplane singer] Grace Slick the three nods. From Grace I got her slinky-ness. Janis was just little with a big attitude and big hair and feathers, and a drop-dead amazing voice. And Jimi was completely and utterly humble. So from those three people I got slinky, attitude and humility – and that was my stage performance.
9 RESPECT OTHER ARTISTS, WHEREVER THEY ARE ON THE BILL
Chrissie Hynde and I have been touring America together. She’s just fantastic. A lot of the people in her group say they haven’t seen her that happy in 30 years. And I love that so much. Because I never wanted Chrissie to feel like she was opening for me. I wanted her to feel that it was a complete and utter double bill. But because the tour was my idea, I got to go on last, basically.
10 BE AN EASY WRITER, AND AN EASY ROCKER
I’ve always loved Tom Petty, from Refugee to Breakdown, all thosesongs. Tom’s an easy writer – very unlike Lindsey, more like myself. When Tom goes up there onstage, he might as well be in his studio or his living room with the stereo banging.

That's not really trashing I don't think. She's not really saying it in a bad way and it's no secret Lindsey is an OTT perfectionist. She's just saying how she's different, and Tom more is like her. Stuff she's said a billion times over the past 30 years, I don't think it really means anything. Trashing him would be if she talks about palm trees falling on his head or something.

Most of it we've heard. But I liked hearing that she and Chrissie Hynde are having a good time together on the road. I'd never heard her refer to Jimi Hendrix as humble before. And I didn't know she and Mick get freak-out nervous before a show.
Okay.
But what does being an "easy writer" mean? I think she means the process of writing it and producing it as opposed to the song itself? I mean, nothing could be easier in spirit and mood than Monday Morning or Eyes of the World.

What new record? The untitled and unscheduled 'not a Fleetwood Mac album' album? Stevie is getting more press for her current tour than Christine and Lindsey combined, despite the fact that they have a new record coming out 'sometime.'

It's obvious that Lindsey and Christine are releasing their album that they worked on and chose not to make under the FM name, they're already began slowly promoting for it and it's scheduled for June.
I love Stevie too but you need to turn your blinders off sometimes and just accept that you don't have to blindly worship the ground the people you love walk on. I find her attitudes towards a lot of things right now to be kind of annoying and I can say that because while I love her, I don't think she's some flawless goddess who can do wrong and must have her every move defended.

And you keep reminding me that I do love her. Which is why I get frustrated. But hey, we get a Buckingham/McVie album with Mick and John. A tour. A LB solo album. Maybe a solo album by Stevie eventually and a blues album by Christine. And a final tour.

I do not do that with Stevie, or any other celebrity. I have no problem with people criticizing her, I've done it plenty of times. If just feels like you can't handle BuckVie getting so much attention. Which points to Elle's thread about Stevie fans being bitter. Christine hasn't had work outside of FMac since 2004. So after a 13 year wait, there's nothing you can say that will upset me.
And if people want to comment on Christine's plastic surgery or Stevie's weight, or Lindsey's hair... let em have at it... I'm not into body shaming. I'm a shorty gay guy who loves to shave his head. I'm the last person to point out someone's body flaws.

well, we are not even sure whether Christine had some plastic surgery recently. that Buckvie pic in the Uncut may have been either airbrushing or just simply botox injection in her forehead. you can definitely still see all the lines under her eyes or around her mouth that come with age.
buck on the other hand, we know had some hair additions since 2011. and while i'm in general not a fan of artificial youth, i'm glad he did it because his natural hairline was starting to look pretty bad.
and i'm not sure what all Stevie has had done, but if you watched Sound City up close in the theater, it was pretty clear who had nothing done vs who had rubbery looking skin like all older performers in vegas usually do.
whatever they do, especially if it's tasteful i'm happy for them, since we all know the cult of youth and beauty in LA and beyond is alive and well.

I will judge the photography. But someone's looks are what they are. It's easier to be a beautiful person than a pretty person. I'm short and stocky.. (you've seen my photos).. I only body shame my close friends... we do it to each other in good spirit..

i've seen your pics - you are hot my friend!
it's a weird phrase you use there, to me. i think it's harder to be beautiful the way you define it - because you have to work on it, that inner beauty. pretty is just in your genes - or not.
but i think what you brought up in your other post was not inner beauty or outer looks - it's whether some entertainers felt they had to artificially "improve" their looks to look younger. and i fully well know many have to. i can respect they feel they have to do it for their jobs; i can even more respect if they manage to be successful without the looks! or alternatively, if they do something to change their looks, if they are straightforward about it - like Cher always was.

She really hasn't had much to say in 20 years, but she used to blame Lindsey all of the time. Like when she said she had some great songs and about 50 mediocre ones that could have been great, if Lindsey hadn't been mad at her.

Ok, so this comment makes me want to get defensive, but I won't :) let's look at this post objectively, instead. You say Stevie hasn't had much to say in 20 years, but she used to blame Lindsey all the time. I'm sure in the hundreds of interviews she's given in the last 20 years, she made a comment about not being pleased with some of Lindsey's production of her songs. Just like I'm sure in the many interviews Lindsey has given in the past 20 years, he's made a comment about making Stevie's songs better. That's not blaming her failures on Lindsey.
She just said in a recent interview that she was disappointed Lindsey took her background vocals off some of the songs on Tango, but she understood why (because they weren't very good or words to that effect). Sounded to me like she was being realistic and diplomatic. She certainly wasn't blaming him.

No need to apologize. I think you take any negative posts re: Stevie personally. Stop that, it will drive you nuts. You can't control what other's think. Although it might be nice if we could. It's not a knock on you, some people just don't like her personality.
I have no problem with your posting. We all get frustrated in here.
However, it's my belief that if anybody says anything bad about Stevie they get jumped on by posters that are normally in the Stevie forum. You do post in this forum a lot, so that's not directed at you. But there's a few that will make excuses for anything Stevie does. That's what gets on some of our nerves.
But, yeah... the humor makes it much more fun.

I wasn't talking about that recent interview. In fact, my post made it clear that I was talking about interviews she gave beyond the last 20 years. Someone said they don't remember many interviews where Stevie blamed Lindsey and I said there are many interviews in which she did, but they are the older interviews.
And I wasn't talking about interviews Lindsey gave about Stevie. I was responding to a comment in a post made about Stevie's interviews, not his.
And I don't care if you feel defensive or not. I feel that if you think the board is too harsh on Stevie, there are many boards that are not where you would feel more comfortable. As soon as I get my tax refund, I will be starting a new bulletin board myself, because I don't like the bulletin boards that are out there about my favorite actor. He's been around a long time and I will be creating a forum 15 years too late, but I'm going to do it anyway, because I'm frustrated with the attitudes on other forums and I left this board in 2003, because I didn't like its tone. No board is for everyone.

One doesn't need a reason to be negative. This isn't the Happy Happy Joy Joy forum.
The kind of comments that Stevie would routinely make about Lindsey are like the one in the interview Courtney Love did with her, to which I was referring.
No, no. I would sit down and play him "Gold Dust Woman" on the guitar, my simple little version, and two days later it would be recorded, and it would be recorded really well. He could take my songs and do what I would do if I had his musical talent. When he wasn’t angry with me, that is. That’s why there’s seven or eight great songs, and there’s 50 more where he wasn’t happy with me and didn’t help me.

No there are some other quotes and things she's said similar to that where she said he worked on them and they weren't good and she said it was because he was sooooo mad at her, I remember reading it. It reminds me of how Ken Caillat also said that she told him Lindsey wouldn't do Planets of the Universe (or maybe Smile at You, I forget which) for Rumours because he was jealous Tom Moncrieff helped her work on it but someone asked Tom about that in his Q&A session and Tom himself said he didn't work on that song and wasn't helping her during that time of FM and then Stevie later offered her typical contradictions saying he just didn't know what to do with the song.

As much as the other INSANE board banned you for not liking Stevie, this is the opposite. You are marked idiotic and a SHIPPER if you have anything positive to say about her here. Yup. I was kicked out of there because he was claiming as fact that Thousand Days, Rooms On Fire and a few other songs were about Joe Walsh when Stevie has stated otherwise. I simply pointed that out and boom, banned
Beware the Chiffon! There are certain degrees as you climb the stairs into the fog where the ghosts live.
You will have seven wonders and turn to gold dust for even ventured there.

I'm not familiar with Bekka's music outside of FM. Could you recommend something for me to listen to?
The only other recordings I have of her is the CD she did with Billy Burnette, in the late 90s. These days (to the best of my knowledge), she mainly makes her living as a backup singer, for the likes of Vince Gill, John Oates, etc... A couple years ago, she had a band together that played every Wednesday in Nashville, at B.B. Kings club. I went and saw them a couple of times, and was blown away! Her range is amazing! It's really a shame that that lineup of FM wasn't given more of a chance to shine.
Edit- she also appeared as a guest at Dave Mason's concert in Nashville, this past summer.

Thanks. It's a pity that she hasn't, it seems, had the material to showcase her performing talent. (I'm really not a fan of "Time", sorry everyone.)
I'm listening to Bekka Bramlett's 2009 album "I Got News For You" on Spotify now. I'll see what I think.
EDIT: Bekka performs very well on the album. The production, arrangements, and songwriting are very professional and polished, but there is nothing on the album that really stands out. It's all very derivative. In my opinion it backs up my surmise that she hasn't had the material to match her ability to perform.

Mick Fleetwood on the Future of Fleetwood Mac, Buying an Australian Farm
https://rollingstoneaus.com/assets/Uploads/mick-fleetwood-wow2.jpg
It’s been two days since Fleetwood Mac played in front of a sold-out crowd at Citi Field in New York City and drummer Mick Fleetwood is leaning back in a chair high up in an Upper East Side suite hotel room marveling at the fact that the group pulled the gig off. With the exception of a show at L.A.’s Dodger Stadium two weeks earlier, they hadn’t played since the final show of their 2015 tour. “With all due respect to John [McVie], I doubt he picked up the bass more than five times in the past two years,” he says with a chuckle. “But that son of a gun was like a Rolls Royce, that smooth. The rest of us had been working like slaves.”
One project that has taken up his time since the last tour is the new photo history book Love That Burns: A Chronicle of Fleetwood Mac Volume One, 1967–1974. It tells the epic saga of Fleetwood Mac from their earliest days as a blues rock band all the way to their first meeting with Stevie Nicks in 1974. “For the most part, this is not a horrible well-known story, at least in America,” he says. “It’s time for the story to be told.”
As part of Rolling Stone’s Words of Wisdom interview series, Fleetwood shared wisdom about ageing, fatherhood, drugs and money. He also spoke about Fleetwood Mac’s future plans.
What’s the best advice you ever got?
It came from my father. He was a pilot officer in the Royal Air Force. When I started to be what could be construed as famous-ish, he said, “Never forget you get up and go to the toilet in the morning, Michael.” Which means, just keep it in perspective and have a good sense of humour and remember that you are a human being, and keep it in line. If he had added, “And don’t take too many drugs”, that might have been helpful too.
What’s the most indulgent purchase you ever made?
I bought a thousand-acre farm in Australia in the early 1980s. It was this whimsical decision to start a whole new life. The property had about eight houses on it and a fishing lake. I cashed out about 3 million bucks and bought it. I actually immigrated to Australia and gave up my green card. I thought it was a great place for all my friends and family, but it was also a pipe dream that literally took me to the poorhouse. I went broke. It was beautiful, and I don’t bemoan the fact that I did it. I also don’t bemoan that I’m not sitting there right now getting eaten by toxic spiders.
What have 50 years in Fleetwood Mac taught you about compromise?
I don’t think it would have been possible without the wit of healthy compromise. My father was a fine officer and in charge of organising large groups of people. He said, “No matter what, as long as you get it done, you don’t need to take the credit.” Some people say, “You’ve had to suck eggs to keep some elements of your story going.” John [McVie] and I can say in good humour we’ve caused some pain, but it turned out pretty good.
Your philosophy seems to be “No matter what, the band carries on.”That was true even when Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham left for a time.
That’s the nature of being in a rhythm section. You need someone to play with. John and I can’t do this in our living room. Also, John and I sticking it out comes from abject fear. What the hell would we do if there was no band? For the most part, amazingly, it worked out, which is a form of alchemy and magic that I will never really truly understand.
You raised teenage girls in the 1980s, and you’re raising teenage girls now. How is it different?
They are frighteningly well-informed now, first of all. If I say something as a parent or a friend – I like to think of myself as both – it puts you on your mark because they can, in 40 seconds, see whether or not you’re full of ****. But I’m way better at being a dad now than I was with my first lovely two daughters. That’s because I’m not as crazy as I used to be, and hopefully not as selfish.
What do you understand about drugs now that you didn’t understand when you started out?
They end up being a nightmare. Maybe we would never have cut certain songs if we hadn’t been up for five days. But you think now, “Does that make it OK?” And it wasn’t OK. You shouldn’t romanticise those things. I’m lucky to be sitting here talking to you now.
What do you wish someone had told you about the music business before you started?
Look out for charlatans who will send you down the road. Yet actually, the real nuts and bolts is I am quite happy that I didn’t have that advice. I’d like to think I could have handled the warning, but if I had been warned, I might not have even signed anything.
Stevie Nicks told me she has no interest in making another Fleetwood Mac album, since it takes too long and nobody would buy it. How do you feel about that?
I’m not superkeen on getting into all of that. But what I do know is that the music of Fleetwood Mac, and the music from everyone that coexists in and outside of that band, is everyone’s prerogative. She is gonna be there next year when we begin a tour and spend the better part of 18 months wandering the planet. And this band has to be able to [allow] that and have no blame game at all. If you want me to say, “Hey, the utopian dream would be that before we hang it up, we all play [new] stuff ...” but we play onstage! God knows we’ve sacrificed huge chunks of time for this strange animal known as Fleetwood Mac, so I’m OK with it.
Christine McVie has hinted that the tour in 2018 might be a farewell. Is that true?
No, everyone in the band has decided it’s not. Phil Collins called his tour I’m Not Dead Yet. Well, we’re not dead yet, but God forbid, we might be, so you could say, “I better go see them!” But you won’t see a poster calling this a farewell tour.
You turned 70 this year. Does it feel different than you imagined it would?
Yeah, it does. Physically, I think I’m healthier than I was at 50. [Grabs chest, fakes a heart attack before laughing hysterically]
You play nearly every Rumours song in the set. Ever think about just playing the album straight through?
It would be fantastic. But we’d have to be like Bruce Springsteen, out there for seven hours. Then it could be the last tour. You’ll see wooden boxes onstage. Five of them.
