A preview of Rhino Records’ latest reissue project, Fleetwood Mac’s glossy 1987 album Tango in the Night

Later this year, Rhino Records will be reissuing Fleetwood Mac’s 14th studio album Tango in the Night, the latest release in a series of deluxe packages focused on the band’s back catalog (Rumours, Tusk, Mirage). Although details of the reissue are still forthcoming, it is expected to contain the remastered original album; bonus discs of session material and outtakes; new liner notes; and rare period photographs.

On December 8, 2016, Rolling Stone contributing writer David Wild confirmed in a Twitter post that he had written the new liner notes for the reissue project. It remains to be seen which route Wild took in reflecting on the tumultuous Tango in the Night sessions, which were first laid bare in drummer Mick Fleetwood’s revealing 1990 autobiography Fleetwood: My Life and Adventures in Fleetwood Mac. Those circumstances ultimately led to the departure of key member Lindsey Buckingham and the addition of his replacements, guitarists Billy Burnette and Rick Vito, to support the album’s ensuing world tour. As a band practically defined by its personal dramas, it would almost seem careless to omit or downplay such a critical juncture in the band’s history.

Packed with the radio-friendly singles “Big Love,” “Seven Wonders, “Little Lies,” and “Everywhere,” Tango in the Night attracted a whole new generation of fans and contributed to the Fleetwood Mac’s legacy as one of the most enduring and resilient recording acts in rock history. At the time, MTV networks saturated music-video play with the album’s singles (a grand total of six was released!), which propelled the album to become an international smash. To date, the album has sold more than five million copies in North America and two million overseas.

In 2014, Mike Duquette, founder of the catalog music blog The Second Disc, featured Tango in the Night as a proposed reissue in his column Reissue Theory. In anticipation of the Tango in the Night reissue, we look back on his thoughtful post (including a hypothetical track list) and celebrate the album that marked the return of Fleetwood Mac to the forefront of the vibrant 1987 pop music scene:

Reissue Theory: Fleetwood Mac, "Tango in the Night"

Welcome to another installment of Reissue Theory, where we focus on great albums and the reissues they could someday see. As we welcome one of our favorite ladies in rock back to her famous band, we remember their last album altogether and the pop success it enjoyed.

One of the best pieces of classic rock news to come out of this nascent year is easily the announcement of singer/keyboardist Christine McVie returning to Fleetwood Mac. McVie retired from the band (and touring in general) after the band's incredibly successful The Dance tour in the late 1990s, leaving singer Stevie Nicks, singer/guitarist Lindsay Buckingham, bassist (and ex-husband) John McVie and drummer Mick Fleetwood to continue as a quartet, but made two surprise appearances with the band in England last year, later expressing her desire to rejoin the band.

While no official plans have been firmed up (beyond the possibility of a full tour), it certainly provokes one to think of the phenomenal albums the quintet have created - in particular, their final set as a quintet, 1987's Tango in the Night. One of the band's most modern (for its time, anyway) productions was also one of its most rapturously received, going triple platinum in the U.S. (and eight times platinum in the U.K., where it was the first Mac album since the Peter Green era to chart higher in England than the States) and spinning off four Top 40 hits. For all its success, though, it's one of two by this lineup of the band (the other being its predecessor, 1982's Mirage) that have not been remastered or expanded by Warner Bros./Rhino.

I think you know where this is leading, of course: after the jump, we'll be looking out for love for Tango in the Night, and imagine what an expanded reissue might look like!

The general history of Fleetwood Mac alone is one for the books. After gradually moving away from blues rock (with guitarists like Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer and Bob Welch at the helm), the addition of power couple Buckingham and Nicks (whose eponymous 1973 album is one of the greatest high-profile LPs unreleased to CD) gave the band a chart-topping album with their 1975 self-titled LP, which had hits in "Rhiannon" and "Say You Love Me." Against all odds, the band survived sex, drugs and three relationships gone awry (Buckingham and Nicks, the McVies and Fleetwood and his wife) to create Rumours in 1977, a pop masterpiece that yielded four Top 10 hits and went 19 times platinum in the United States.

Follow-up albums Tusk (an ambitious 1979 double LP) and Mirage (1982) were commercially successful though not as rapturously received as Rumours, and the band largely went their separate ways through the decade. All but John McVie took stabs at a solo career, with Nicks having the most chart success with singles like "Edge of Seventeen," "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" with Tom Petty and "Stand Back." (Buckingham had more modest successes with "Trouble," "Go Insane" and the maniacally catchy "Holiday Road" from National Lampoon's Vacation.)

But the past was starting to catch up with the band: Fleetwood went bankrupt while Nicks and John McVie suffered drug-related issues, with Nicks checking into the Betty Ford Clinic. Would Mirage (decidedly not a favorite of Buckingham's) be their last effort? Fortunately, Buckingham gradually invited his old bandmates to participate in what was conceived as another solo album with producer Richard Dashut, and another Fleetwood Mac LP began to form.

Tango in the Night bears heavy elements of Buckingham's solo work - propulsive and jittery, with occasional flashes of out-there trickery (the echoing repetition of "Caroline," the off-kilter choruses of singles "Big Love" and "Family Man"). But there are some shining moments for the band's leading ladies. Nicks wrote or co-wrote "Seven Wonders," "Welcome to the Room...Sara" and "When I See You Again" and, by most accounts, committed them to tape pretty quickly (she only spent about two weeks recording with the band, otherwise busy with promoting her 1985 solo album Rock a Little and battling addiction). But it's McVie that really gets to shine on Tango: the singer who gave us "You Make Loving Fun," "Say You Love Me" and the beautiful Rumours deep cut "Songbird" is in rare form, writing or co-writing nearly half the record, including major singles "Everywhere" and "Little Lies," plus forgotten single "Isn't It Midnight" and album side "Mystified."

Shortly after the release of the album, Buckingham succumbed to the pressure of what he felt was having to steer the band, and departed. The band continued as a sextet, adding singer/songwriter/guitarists Rick Vito and Billy Burnette and chasing a more adult contemporary sound on Behind the Mask (1990) and Time (1995), the latter of which saw Nicks and Vito depart, replaced by Bekka Bramlett (daughter of Bonnie) and Dave Mason of Traffic. (The classic lineup, sans Christine McVie, have recorded one album, Say You Will (2003) and a 2013 EP.)

While reissues of Fleetwood Mac, Rumours and Tusk were heavy on outtake material, a healthy deluxe version of Tango in the Night could be assembled from released material. Four non-LP B-sides turned up during the singles period for the album, and five dance mixes were commissioned from major remixers. (A new mix of "Isn't It Midnight" would surface on a box set in 1992.) These tracks, combined with a few possible things in the vault, give us the bonus disc we present to you as part of this Reissue Theory post.

Coming February 24, 2017 pre-order your copy today! Orders with both pre-order and in stock items will have all in stock items shipped immediately!

3CD, 1 DVD & 1LP Set!

Originally released in 1987, Tango In the Night was the 14th studio album from Fleetwood Mac, the fifth from the line-up of Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood.

The album began as a Lindsey Buckingham solo project but morphed into an album for the group instead and contains the singles "Seven Wonders", "Little Lies", "Big Love", and "Everywhere".

"Artistically and commercially, the Stevie Nicks/Lindsey Buckingham/Mick Fleetwood/Christine and John McVie edition of Fleetwood Mac had been on a roll for over a decade when Tango in the Night was released in early 1987. This would, unfortunately, be Buckingham's last album with the pop/rock supergroup -- and he definitely ended his association with the band on a creative high note. Serving as the album's main producer, Buckingham gives an edgy quality to everything from the haunting "Isn't It Midnight" to the poetic "Seven Wonders" to the dreamy "Everywhere." Though Buckingham doesn't over-produce, his thoughtful use of synthesizers is a major asset. Without question, "Family Man" and "Caroline" are among the best songs ever written by Buckingham, who consistently brings out the best in his colleagues on this superb album." - allmusic.com, Alex Henderson

Amazon doesn't yet have the track list for the 3 CD/LP/DVD edition, but it does have the 2 CD one. Here it is. Three things:

(1) Odd that it has DES, BOM, and Ricky, but apparently not "You and I Part 1" [unless it's part of track 12, below].
(2) Where is "Joan of Arc"?
(3) What is "Where We Belong"?

1. Down Endless Street (Remastered)
2. Special Kind of Love (Demo)
3. Seven Wonders (Early Version)
4. Tango in the Night (Demo)
5. Mystified (Alternate Version)
6. Book of Miracles (Instrumental)
7. Where We Belong (Demo)
8. Ricky (Remastered)
9. Juliet (Run-Through)
10. Isn't It Midnight (Alternate Mix)
11. Ooh My Love (Demo)
12. Mystified (Instrumental Demo)
13. You And I, Part II (Full Version)

Any guesses on the 3rd disc? My bet is it's the audio of the Shake the Cage tour concert filmed at the Cow Palace in San Francisco in 1987 and released on vhs and DVD as Tango in the Night Live.

This would be interesting, since Lindsey had left the band and was replaced by Billy Burnette and Rick Vito during this time. But it would fit the pattern of the other deluxe editions. I'll only buy the 2 CD version UNLESS the new release features other songs not included on the original release, like the Tusk album had. If it's like Mirage, with only the audio of the original concert with no extra songs, forget it.

Is anyone else perplexed as to why this album is announced so much closer to the release date, when the other albums had months of notice? And why the hold up on what's on the 3rd CD?

After this, the white album will be next to get an expanded edition.

Personally, I find the fact that Joan of Arc and the Big Love duet have been pulled the most interesting fact, especially since it's release was announced on the same day that the news came out that we would be getting a Nicks-less album by Spring.
I hate to say it, but I don't think this bodes well for the future of the band!

I'm now of the opinion that the Fleetwood Mac name gets laid to rest in 2018. Stevie will go solo full time while the others continue on as Buckingham McVie. Kind of like when "All In The Family" became "Archie Bunker's Place."

Ultimately, if it means a few more albums can come out without all the drama and BS, I can live with it.

I'm inclined to agree with you. I think they're already contractually obligated to do the tour at the end of the year, but I don't see it continuing beyond that....I think there will be some hard feelings over this whole album situation, so I don't think the vibe on the road will be as good.
John has said that he pretty much wants to retire by the time he's 75, so we might see the other three continue on for a while, but it won't be as Fleetwood Mac....I think Mick would be OK using the name no matter who's in the band....anyone, that is, except John!
Plus, Chris is going on 74.....as much as she loved being back, I think it had taken a lot out of her by the end of 2015, and that's just going to increase.
Yep....I think Fleetwood Mac is winding down, sooner and in a more different way than anyone had planned or hoped for. But I have to admit.....I'm kind of interested and excited to see what comes next!

That track listing that listed "Joan of Arc" and "Big Love duet" was fake. It was from a few years ago. It was just a website proposing what could be on the outtake disc. That was not an official track list by any means.

Apart from the fact that, as Deribish already said, the previous was just a speculation list, actually the article is from the 6th of January and also there hasn't been any involvement by the members of the band in the late reissues so I doubt the tracklist has any link to the state of the band at the moment. If anything, to capitalize on the alleged loss of Stevie they would have included more tracks that featured her if it were otherwise.

Fleetwood Mac To Release Tango In The Night Deluxe Editions Feb 24th

Friday The 13th isn't so bad after all.... Looks like another reissue is on the way and rather soon! Amazon has Fleetwood Mac's Tango In The Night Deluxe, Expanded and single disc versions set for a February 24th release date. This is amazing!! Tango In The Night, originally released in 1987 (30 years ago this year) is Fleetwood Mac's 2nd most successful album in terms of sales behind Rumours.

Amazon has the tracklist of the 2CD Expanded Edition listed and if Rhino is following a formula on these Fleetwood Mac Remastered Reissues CD3 of the Deluxe Edition is likely the audio from the Tango In The Night Tour video that was first released on VHS and subsequently issued on DVD. The DVD in this package is likely a 5.1 mix of the original album (although personally, I'd like to see them release the videos for the singles Big Love, Little Lies, Seven Wonders and Everywhere). David Wild (on Twitter) recently eluded to writing new liner notes for Fleetwood Mac like previous reissues and he confirmed it today on Twitter. Configurations of the release look to be in line with previous releases - 2CD, 3CD/1DVD/1LP and a single CD of the album - all remastered. More info on this will follow.

Links to pre-order are at the bottom.

For some reason, this hasn't appeared in the UK Amazon yet. I shall be rushing to buy a copy when it's out though. The album that started me on my Fleetwood Mac journey as a teenager...

I am hopeful that it is on the third CD, and hopeful that the third CD has a lot more out takes and early versions of songs. I really want the alternate version of Tango that surfaced about six months ago. It sounded fantastic! I am not really interested in a live set with Billy Burnett and Rick Vito - nothing against them, but Tango is pure Lindsey, with help from Richard Dashut, Christine, John and Mick, and ever so slightly, Stevie (five to seven days in the studio, so the story goes).

Same here. I owned the Tango concert on VHS back in the day, and it was nothing special. Much rather hear ALL the b-sides and outtakes.

I hope they include demos for Little Lies and Everywhere on Disc 3. It would seem like a glaring omission if the didn't include some alt version of these big hits. Actually, as I look at the track listing for Disc 2, there's no alternates of Big Love either-- a major single from the album. So I hope Disc 3 has more studio outtakes.

Leaving You And I, Part I off this would be an egregious error. It would also be hugely disappointing for the DVD to be the already released concert which is atrocious, mostly due to the Stevie close ups.

The DVD would be the DVD audio of the album Tango in the Night. And the 3rd CD will likely be just the audio of the concert, just like the expanded editions of Rumours, Tusk, and Mirage were all audios of concerts.

I imagine You and I Part I is being released as all one track with Part II on the bonus disc hence the somewhat misleading title for the last track thereon.

Amazon doesn't yet have the track list for the 3 CD/LP/DVD edition, but it does have the 2 CD one. Here it is. Three things:

(1) Odd that it has DES, BOM, and Ricky, but apparently not "You and I Part 1" [unless it's part of track 12, below].
(2) Where is "Joan of Arc"?
(3) What is "Where We Belong"?

1. Down Endless Street (Remastered)
2. Special Kind of Love (Demo)
3. Seven Wonders (Early Version)
4. Tango in the Night (Demo)
5. Mystified (Alternate Version)
6. Book of Miracles (Instrumental)
7. Where We Belong (Demo)
8. Ricky (Remastered)
9. Juliet (Run-Through)
10. Isn't It Midnight (Alternate Mix)
11. Ooh My Love (Demo)
12. Mystified (Instrumental Demo)
13. You And I, Part II (Full Version)

I'm thinking that that tracklisting still isn't the final one. The bonus discs on the recent remasters have tended to be pretty full with 20-ish tracks on them whereas that tracklist looks like its missing about 6 or 7 tracks. It's a shame there's no stand alone 3CD version like there was with Tusk. 1st CD the original album, 2nd CD the 4 b-sides plus the 12 inch mixes and 3rd CD an alternate version of the album with extra stuff.

I'm interested to know who did the remastering on this reissue. More than anything I want a 5.1 surround mix. Tusk and Mirage were excellent in that regard. But don't know if Caillet was involved in this due to him not being involved in the original release. Also, this one seemed to come together pretty fast. It seemed like forever after Mirage was finally announced that it came out. I'm not complaining because I have been hoping for this release for years I'm just surprised. I'm also hoping the 75 eponymous album finally gets the super deluxe treatment. I realize they may not have the demos for an extra disc, but a live disc and a 5.1 surround mix would be just fine with me.

I think this is one of the cases in which the Mac fail to publicize things.
The first time this reissue of Tango has been mentioned was actually last October, and last December David Wilde confirmed it: http://stevie-nicks.info/2016/10/tango-in-the-night-to-be-reissued-in-deluxe-format/

I think everything just got sucked up in the (no) new album frenzy.

Surely the third disc will include some (I don't think they would all fit) of the 12" remixes? I'd be surprised if the demo of "Everywhere" wasn't included since it was broadcast on a radio show back in the day. I'd also like to hear the alternate version of "When I See You Again" featuring Stevie and Lindsey singing the original two-part harmony during the fade-out (before Stevie had her vocal deleted).

The disc 3 better not be the embarrassingly bad concert with the non stop Stevie close ups. SO cringeworthy. Did she see that final edit and approve it? I remember getting it back in the day and couldn't ever watch it again because I got such douche chills watching it. Of course Miss Nicks loves a good close up of herself.

I'd bet big money that THAT'S what it is- because that's exactly what the Mirage live disc was. The Mirage tour ~video~ audio. The broadcast version. No extra songs. Note for note, word for word. Cheap/LAZY asses!!! $86 retail, and the lazy asses couldn't even give us something we've not heard a million times?!?!

A New Remastered and Expanded Edition of Fleetwood Mac Classic, Tango In The Night, Planned For February

Fleetwood Mac has enjoyed a multi-lineup career that is still an active one. Once begun with Peter Green, the changes eventually led to their most successful lineup that included Lindsey Buckingham, and Stevie Nicks. The self-titled debut album for that particular lineup generated four hits and sold more than six million copies. Its follow-up, Rumours, went even further with sales of over 25 million copies and four more high charting singles. Eventually, they began to level off with the disappointment of Tusk. But with subsequent releases, Fleetwood Mac still generated singles and sold well in albums sales.

By 1987, the band released Tango In The Night. That album produced four singles, with the biggest ones being "Big Love", and "Little Lies" (my favorite). The album went on to sell more than 8 million copies.

Last year, Fleetwood Mac released a remastered and expanded edition of Mirage. On February 24, Rhino Records will revisit Tango In The Night with its own remastered and expanded edition. In addition to a single CD release of the album, there will be a 2CD Edition with the additional CD filled with demos, alternate takes, instrumentals, and non-album B-sides (see track-list below). there will also be the obligatory digital downloads. But the grand prize for the hard core fans will be a 3CD/DVD/1LP Super Deluxe package.

With the previous release of Mirage, the DVD contained high-resolution tracks, and, of course, the vinyl LP makes aficionados pleased. The 3rd CD, while not noted as to content, will likely follow Mirage's example with a full concert from the period.

As a bonus, Christine McVie, and Lindsey Buckingham have planned the release of a duet album much like Buckingham did with Stevie Nicks. There is no release date on that as of yet.

That would be nice (I think?). Part of me was thinking that maybe the talk of Stevie not being involved and "Buckingham/McVie" was just a way to generate buzz for a release with all 5 of them, but who knows.

Probably it's just a tracklist problem, since the one they gave us before was just partial it was a temporary one anyway, something may have been changed.
Or it may even be that there's a problem with the source material and the due date is to be postponed.

It's funny (in an ironic way) that it seems like the Tango in the Night sessions all over again, where the rest of the band is working on the album except for Stevie and the band is growing impatient with her because she's doing her solo thing.

Stevie can't prevent the record company from releasing the Expanded Edition of Tango in the Night. Listings come and go from Amazon all the time before the release date.

The conspiracy theories continue, however... and since they're all targeted against Stevie, here's another one: maybe the other band members put a stop to Tango's rerelease because they don't want their 'duet' album to be released so close to the release of a REAL Fleetwood Mac album.

I appreciate you are only jesting, but I think the opposite is closer to the truth. I think they'd be quite happy releasing the new album not long after Tango as there'd be media interest. They'll, no doubt be doing interviews in support of the Tango box set which will be a perfect opportunity to tie in with the forthcoming release....'well there are some parallels between making Tango In The Night and how we've worked on the new album that you'll be hearing in a couple of months...' etc

It's about time those music videos were released, that explains why Seven Wonders video disappeared off iTunes a month or so ago. Awesome news.

I'm glad they didn't go with the live audio from Tango, no offence, but without Lindsey...:distress:

I agree. The Mirage outtakes disc had 20 tracks. This one has only 13. No Little Lies or Everywhere demos? No You and I Part 1? Not sure what they were thinking. I wonder if Isn't It Midnight is the same alternate mix from The Chain box set and if the TITN demo is the same as the one that Richard Dashut shared on his blog. I didn't care for the 12-inch remixes from this album, though I understand the reasoning behind including the remixes disc for the sake of completeness, but I would have been more interested in hearing more outtakes.

Of course I'll buy it ... but not so exited about this release. No real gems I guess.

I've had the remixes on 12-inch maxi singles since the 80's, fun to listen to ... once ...but maybe a bit out of time if you'd ask me.

Scheduled for a Dutch release om march 10 as well.

Here's hoping that the "full" You And I includes part 1, otherwise that would be an odd omission.

Thanks! I didn't investigate that far.

My pleasure! It did require a lot of squinting at the screen, and I might yet be wrong...

It is a shame that they didn't dig a little further though - as ever with this wonderful, infuriating band, there is more material out there. This lovely animated UK commercial, for instance:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUDimvPYSYA

What about those slightly uncomfortable group interviews they did to promote the release? There was also a rather lovely commercial for the Greatest Hits album (a year later, I know), with very cool animated versions of each band member - any other UK fans remember that, or am I hallucinating again?

Other acts seem to be able to find more in the archives - Paul Mccartney, for instance, is reissuing his great album 'Flowers In The Dirt' in March, with 2 CDs of demos, a DVD with 10 videos (including alternate versions) and two separate documentaries.

However, I love Tango with a passion, and I'm very excited to have another chance to buy it! Just pre-ordered, in fact...

My big worry about this is that 'You & I Part 1' is not on the list, as others have said. I'm clinging to the theory that it will be part of the mysterious-sounding 'You & I Part II (Full Version)'. Now, I can imagine that as some sort of gloriously Proggy suite of songs. In fact, I can't really imagine how you could extend Part II, as it's quite a basic song, albeit heavily (and wonderfully) ironic in its juxtaposition of bouncily upbeat tune and thoroughly bleak lyrics.

Crossing my fingers...

That would be amazing. I remember when I had the b side of Big Love and listened to You and I part 1. And I said to myself... "Oh my god where is this going??!!"

It's beautiful... and then I looked and it said (Buckingham/McVie)

Fleetwood Mac Unearth Rare Tracks for 'Tango in the Night' Reissue
Deluxe, remastered edition of 1987 LP includes previously unheard demos, alternate recordings

Fleetwood Mac will release an expansive, 30th anniversary edition of their 14th studio album, 1987's Tango in the Night, on March 10th via Warner Bros. Records. The reissue is packaged in three formats: a one-CD set featuring remastered audio, an expanded two-CD version with rare and unreleased recordings and a deluxe version featuring three CDs, a 180-gram LP and a DVD with music videos and a high-resolution version of the album.

With Tango in the Night, Fleetwood Mac fully immersed themselves in the decade's glossy production style. Showcasing the diverse styles of primary songwriters Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie, the 12-track LP spawned a quartet of hit singles: "Big Love," "Seven Wonders," "Everywhere" and "Little Lies." Their second highest-selling album behind 1977 masterwork Rumours, it remains the group's final studio project with the classic quintet line-up of Buckingham, Nicks, McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood.

The deluxe and expanded reissues features a disc of 13 previously unheard recordings, including an alternate version of shimmering Christine McVie ballad "Mystified," a demo of Buckingham's epic, percussion-heavy title-track and rare B-sides "Down Endless Street" and "Ricky." The deluxe edition offers a third disc with 14 12-inch mixes – including dub versions of "Seven Wonders and "Everywhere" – and a DVD with videos of "Big Love," "Seven Wonders," "Little Lies," "Family Man" and "Everywhere."
Buckingham and Christine McVie recently announced an album of duets tentatively titled Buckingham McVie. The set, which features contributions from John McVie and Fleetwood, is loosely slated for a May release.

I know that some of you are disappointed at the lack of some demos we've all heard. I wonder if the quality didn't meet certain standards. It would be a shame to include a hissy warped track to fill up a CD.

I also wonder if the content of the 3rd disc was only recently decided. In the same picture of the deluxe set on Amazon, the first disc standing up on the left is clearly the full original album, the first disc laying down is disc 2, but so is the disc to its right. The far right disc is the DVD.

This demo on youtube has the 1986/87 Stevie voice and the music of Tango in the Night. It sounds like a sped Mystified with a little Welcome to the Room Sara. I don't think this demo is from TOSOTM. It sounds very much from the Tango in the night era.

Well I not 100% sure (and hey, I would be absolutely thrilled to be wrong) but the Rolling Stone article stated the DVD is a High-Resolution Stereo Mix and on another message-board a Rhino representative stated that a 5.1 mix not created.

I imagine that there is no 5.1 mix because the many layers and overproduction of the record i think that is just how Lindsey works on records. Layers and layers and then downmixing and adding more.

The individual instruments would all have to have their own track. This is how Rumours and White Album and most of Tusk and Mirage were done. I also think that most of the prep work for the 5.1 mixes we do have were initially prepared many years ago. If I recall the 5.1 dvd of Rumours was initially started back in 1996/97. This is where the Stems for those songs come from. Tango might be very lush but I think loses coherency as it splits the instruments into dofferent channels. Think of how strange Pet Sounds would be is just the individual instruments played. By themselves the parts seem strange but together they make magic. I think Tango is like this. I bet if they had the ability to do it they would have done it.

I really did not care for a whole CD of crappy 80s dub mixes! i guess its better than a DVD of the Tango concert with the infamous bloated Stevie.

I got a little flamed a few months back when I wrote the lack of material for the re-release. A second disc of remixes is hardly interesting unheard material. I also was right about the group not releasing any live music from this era. Tango is probably my least favorite Mac album. I may get this re-release someday though.

Omg that Tango In The Night demo is awful. Lindsey's voice is like nails on a chalk board.

Also, on iTunes it says "You and I, Pt, II (full version) so does that mean part 2 was oringinally longer, or are they combining part 1 and part 2? I was very disappointed when I didn't see You and I part 1 on there. I love that song.

I'm happy that all the remixes, including the promo-only ones, will be reissued. Obviously, these won't appeal to everyone. Some of my vinyl copies are pretty worn out so it will be nice to have them in digital form. The "Big Love" remix/edit is pretty rare. It has such a disco-vibe, but what I REALLY love is the addition of the Lindsey's guitar solo (totally different from the album version) during the instrumental break. That part can only be found on the remixes.

I'm gonna pass on this one. tango is by far the worst album of the five. I own the 12 inches, bought them back then. Aweful. All of them. I like Ricky and Down Endless Street though, but I have the vinyl. So there is really nothing that drags me in on this reissue.

I agree. I remember getting the 12" maxi singles from Sam Goody back then, and I had to return about 4 copies of seven wonders because there was a skip in the exact same place on every copy. Eventually I just put a quarter on top of my stylus to keep it from skipping.

Probably Bill Ingot, formerly of Rhino Records. He's done most of the Mac remasters.

That's what I think, too. I'll bet it's one long song that was split into two. At the end of the Part 1, the music changes at the fade as if a different song is going to start...like Part 2!

It would be a travesty if Part 1 were excluded from the reissue.

YES, I think it was during the beginning before the vocal starts, but I haven't played the actual record in many years. I also have the 12" picture discs, but I used them as wall decorations for years so if they don't skip it would be a miracle.

Tango in the Night really was a huge part of people's lives here in the UK from 1987-88. It was massive. The reissue has already reached as high as #6 on the Amazon UK main album chart which shows how people still remember it and have such a high regard for it.

All of the singles, bar Isn't it Midnight, are played on the radio frequently. And even though some singles didn't reach that high, because the album sold so many copies, everyone knew the songs already. Just like Rumours. (The highest charting single off that was Dreams which only reached a measly #24 and look how popular it is). I can remember a few weeks back Seven Wonders was played and just as it started she said "Ah, I recognise those few bars. It's Seven Wonders by Fleetwood Mac." Would she say that about a regular single that only reached #56 in the chart. No. It's because everyone knew Seven Wonders because everyone had the album!
My Dad said he had 3 versions. LP, Cassette (which he wore out due to overplaying), and CD.

Excellent!! I had no idea that it was offered till I read this post. Either that or I forgot. I have the 2 disc deluxe, but nothing compares to a good surround mix. Amazon has it new for $37. Totally worth it. Arriving tomorrow. I have the Rumours SACD-DSD hybrid that's supposed to be great surround, but not like I wanna hear. So I found the DVD-Audio for $65 new which is half as much as anyone else. So looking forward to that. I still can't believe they didn't do that for Tango. Pretty upsetting.

I completely relate to this. In fact, I was thinking the current cost might be so high just due to the fact the original album was such a big deal (so much more of a big deal in the UK than Mirage). If I'm not mistaken it go to number 1 in the UK on 3 separate occasions.

So then isn't it just kind of redundant to put the same audio tracks from the CD onto the DVD if they aren't in 5.1?

I love my Rumours DVD Audio, and the SYW was excellent also, but the TUSK audio DVD was plagued with distortion and a static noise on a lot of the tracks (some worse than others). I had the same issue with some of the DVD audio on Mirage, but not to the same extent.

Not exactly. Audio DVD produces audio up to 24bit/96kHz playback, but CD only produces 16bit/44.1kHz playback, so the music on the DVD-Audio is supposed to sound superior to that on the CD.

This demo on youtube has the 1986/87 Stevie voice and the music of Tango in the Night. It sounds like a sped Mystified with a little Welcome to the Room Sara. I don't think this demo is from TOSOTM. It sounds very much from the Tango in the night era.

I agree with you. Stevie's Tango songs are sub-par to say the least. Stevie was still writing good songs then but the timing of things blew her chances of having any good songs on Tango. She was on tour when Tango started. She sent them some demos and When I see you again was one of them. Then Stevie went to rehab. I have read that the initial report in Mick's first book that Stevie spent no more than 3 weeks in the studio was overly gracious and that it was no more than 1-2 weeks at the most. Mick says the group passed on What has rock n roll ever done for you. I can see Lindsey rolling his eyes on that song because it is a bit arrogant. When Stevie got out of rehab she had a fresh song with Welcome to the room Sara but it was fresh but not good. I see Stevie and the group worrying similarly to the RAL effort where the album was almost done and Stevie's songs were so bad there was no single for release. I see Seven Wonders written by Sandy Stewart as the "Talk to Me" of Tango. It was written by someone else to quickly get some sort of "single" on the album.
If Stevie was there in the studio with the band for all of its creation, I would bet maybe none of her Tango songs may have made the cut.
There are just so many reasons I don't like Tango in the night and this is one of them. I love Isnt it midnight and is one of the band's best songs and Tango in the night is a good song. But the rest of the album I don't care for many reasons. If you like simple synth pop songs with 80's sound then Tango is for you. I would like to have seen Tango with Running through the Garden, Ooh My Love, or another song. BTW I cant wait to hear the Ooh my love Tango demo. That is so exciting to me.

I'm a little confused about the timeline and wonder if anyone could clarify. To my understanding, Stevie recorded her vocals for 'Seven Wonders' before checking into the Betty Ford clinic, thus before there would have been any potential panic about future single releases. 'Welcome... Sara' was one of the first songs she wrote after her stint at the clinic. But when was 'Joan of Arc' demoed and is it a solo or a FM demo?

Its fair to point out this is a below average effort from Stevie, but I think the second half of the song is pretty strong. Good transitions, and instrumental work, and the LB vocal part is strong. (He did what he could with that from an arrangement point of view)

I love Lindsey and Christine's songs on Tango. It's a shame that Stevie's left so much to be desired because on the four previous albums, Stevie always had the most consistently high quality songs. Lindsey and Christine both had a few misses, but Stevie's were always really good. This could be because Stevie never got more than three songs on an album, so it gave Lindsey and Christine more room for a few just okay songs instead of fewer awesome songs like Stevie provided.

This could be because Stevie never got more than three songs on an album, so it gave Lindsey and Christine more room for a few just okay songs instead of fewer awesome songs like Stevie provided.
We also have to keep in mind that at that point probably all three of them preferred to keep part of their best material for their solo careers. For Stevie this may have been particularly true since it was the beginning of the klonopin era and she was starting to write considerably less songs than before.

After Wild Heart it went down hill. I do like OSOTM and RAL but her consistency started to waver. And then her voice became so nasal after The Dance it became intolerable for me.

well she always promoted herself as a prolific songwriter, always writing.....ok, but always writing doesn't mean everything that's coming out of you is great stuff or even good. She wrote/writes a lot of partial material...look at the demo of Planets....it's not a fully structured song. I love the demo, but it's clear that in that form it was not viable yet as a song that could go on a record. It wasn't fleshed out enough. I love Joan of Arc but on the demo she sings the exact same lyrics to the first and second verse and then it kind of wanders of... intriguing for sure, but not releasable material. Lindsey did what he could to try and restructure it on later versions. I feel the same way about Starshine...it's the EXACT SAME VERSE three times...... with a little twist that she leaves you hanging but finally throws in the "wrong!" on the third one.

Eventually that is going to catch up with you when you are on the hook for writing everything for entire albums. Yeah at 3 songs a whack she had a backlog from FM, but once she started needing 11-12 songs per album with back-to-back albums.....the backlog drains down. And there's a reason many of those songs never made it to an album....:sorry: Many of them are great *seeds* for a song, but never blossomed into a proper song.

RAL was the last (barely) acceptable album for me. OSOTM made me jump off the cliff.

Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham describes the making of Tango in the Night as the “worst recording experience of my life”.
Singer Stevie Nicks was addicted to the tranquilliser*Klonopin and spent just two weeks in the studio, drummer Mick Fleetwood had declared bankruptcy a few years prior and was still very much loving his drugs (Buckingham: “half the time Mick was falling asleep”)*while none of them could truly claim they weren’t indulging their vices.
“Everyone was at their worst, including myself.” said Buckingham.*“We’d made the progression from what could be seen as an acceptable or excusable amount of drug use to a situation where we had all hit the wall. I think of it as our darkest period.”
Ask any serious Mac head and they’ll all agree: Rumours was Fleetwood Mac’s greatest work. And no one can really argue that that collection of songs, from three songwriters firing on all cylinders – and usually firing those cylinders directly at each other – isn’t a complete masterpiece.

But yet, for me, Tango in the Night – remarkably, the last album made by the ‘classic’ lineup – will always be the pinnacle of the band’s output. As it celebrates its 30th birthday this year, receiving a luxurious reissue from Warners, it’s time to give this often-neglected record the attention it truly deserves.
I say neglected –*the thing’s*sold over 15 million copies and is the band’s second best-selling album after Rumours, housing*a host of hit singles –*but it’s always felt to me that it’s never been truly respected for what it is: one of the greatest pop records ever made.
Perhaps prevailing*anti-pop snobbery is what’s done for it; the record didn’t have the intense, inter-band quarreling and soap opera tendencies of Rumours while, sonically, Tango in the Night was more processed and produced than its ‘earthy’-sounding*rival, which usually gets critics’ backs up. Even at the time, Rolling Stone confidently declared that “Tango*may not be a world-beating 1980s LP”, while subsequent documentaries seem to gloss over the album’s making in favour of an*elongated Rumours section. This article perhaps sums it up best, when it describes*“critics dismissing it as the final demise of the band into a mushy-adult-contempo-soft-boiled-soft-rock-commercial-radio-mess”. But they are so wrong.

No, the beauty of Tango in the Night is that it is just a no-holds barred collection of utterly banging pop songs. One after the other, like a hammer to the head. It’s the sound of Lindsey Buckingham achieving exactly the right level of production experimentation, Christine McVie providing a barrage of super-sweet melodic hooks (she wrote or co-wrote five of the album’s 12 tracks) and when Stevie turns up, she does what Stevie does brilliantly. Meanwhile, as it’s so commonplace that we’ve all just taken it for granted, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie lay down some of the best rhythm playing you will ever hear in your life.*As a side note, with Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham releasing their debut album as a double act later this year, this is as close as they got to it before, so do we dare to dream that they can repeat the magic?
Despite the always-fascinating stories behind the making of the album, and the particular stage of the Fleetwood Mac soap opera that the members were living through at the time, it’s an album that simply speaks straight to the listener. You don’t really need any context to realise that this is an unbelievably brilliant collection of songs –*in my opinion, their best.
And, one-by-one, this is exactly why.

Big Love

These days it’s Lindsey Buckingham’s party piece live, as he somehow manages to become a ludicrous one-man band and play twenty five guitar parts at once, but the original should not be overlooked. Rhythmic guitar parts tickle both of your ears on the far sides of the mix, Mick and John lay down the groove, while Lindsey alternates between hushed psychopath in the verses and full tilt in the choruses. There are about five different guitar hooks and –*this won’t be the last time we say this – there is absolutely no cocking about: the chorus is in by 30 seconds and it’s all done in*3:38. Fun fact: the oohs and aahs (another crucial hook in the song) are all performed by Lindsay –*the high ones being his voice pitch-shifted up. Second fun fact: the video reportedly cost $500,000 ($1.1m by today’s standards). This from a band whose drummer had recently declared bankruptcy. Respect. Oh, and they spent*$500,000 and nobody can be arsed to upload the actual master to YouTube. Brilliant.

Pop bangingness: 9
Best bit: The opening two seconds. Groove in, guitar hook in. Let’s get this going

Seven Wonders

Just like Big Love, from second one, you know this is going to be good, with that synth sound swiftly followed by a nonchalantly epoch-defining*keyboard hook. In comes big Mick and John to lay down the groove once more, there’s some lovely conga action in your left ear and Stevie gets to work howling away. It’s chorus time at just 40 seconds (you’re slacking guys) and –*oh look, it’s an amazing one -*as Christine’s vocal sweetens up the sound, while John takes a break from default mode to do*some absolutely gorgeous bass runs. Not content with just that epoch-defining keyboard hook in the following instrumental section, Lindsey decides to add a response hook on his guitar. Verse two, chorus two, loads of that keyboard/guitar hook bit, verse three, chorus three. Done by 3:32: NO COCKING ABOUT.
Pop bangingness: 9
Best bit: “you’llneverlivetoseethe beauty, that*beauty, that same same beauty again”

Everywhere

The opening sixty eight seconds of this song is, without any question, better than the entire recorded output of Bob Dylan. One of the most iconic opening sections of all time with that keyboard riff, straight into one of the greatest verses of all time (it’s arguably as good as the chorus), followed by the pure ear sugar that is the*chorus. It is a joke how good this song is. And it was the fourth single from the album. Just for a change, Mick and John lay down the groove throughout while Lindsey does that percussive guitar thing again –*it’s so restrained, it’s so understated, which just makes the chorus such a release of pure joy as the vocals come together. It’s bizarre: Everywhere is*a song that has just become more and more popular as time gets on; we can only assume it’s because the human race is evolving and becoming smarter (let’s ignore current world events for the purpose of this theory).

Pop bangingness: 10
Best bit: that extra skip and jump snare*and crash pattern from Mick Fleetwood in the second half of verse two. Obviously that’s a ludicrous thing to say when you have the myriad other amazing bits of the song to choose from, but it’s just pure drumming genius to bother putting that in when he clearly didn’t need to

Caroline

Even if Tango in the Night were only those first three songs followed by 50 minutes of a high-powered drill going through concrete*it would be one of the greatest albums ever made, but on we go to track four: Caroline. The clearest indication on the record that Tango in the Night started life as a Lindsey Buckingham solo album, this has all the hallmarks of his more angular work, being not a million miles away from the feel of Tusk -*yet it’s still very much a pop song. Opening up with some big Mick drums, we’re still amazed that Warren G and Nate Dogg never got round to sampling the bit before the vocals come in. The lyrics are a bit rubbish, but who cares when you can holler along to the singalong-ready chorus. Throughout, Mick and John lay down the groove.

Pop bangingness: 6
Best bit: the weird middle 8 bit and the outro with the quasi-Eastern female vocals*is a lovely change of mood

Tango in the Night

Effectively another Lindsey solo track, again this showcases just what a genius of a performer and producer he is. A mystical verse, all soft and processed vocals, with synth-harps and soft percussion giving way to a big, angry chorus where Mick and John lay down the groove. A favourite trick of Buckingham though; while the song still possesses a banging chorus, it’s really all a set up for the end section where he finally lets rip and shows us what he can do with that old gee-tah.
Pop bangingness: 5
Best bit: the first note of the guitar solo –*he’s been waiting three and a half songs to break out a solo and it shows. However, he still has the restraint as producer to limit it so the song still clocks in at a respectable 4:03

Mystified

After that mid album interlude to allow Lindsey a bit of rock experimentalism, it’s back to pop business, and this is one of the most underrated songs in the Mac canon. Naturally, there is (again) no cocking about, opening up literally immediately with an utterly gorgeous, haunting chorus. There’s an equally gorgeous*verse, with a sort of twinkling harpsichord thing going on before it’s back into that chorus again, followed by another piece of restrained playing by Buckingham. Extra marks for the cracking conga work all the way through the song, which plays on top of Mick and John laying down the groove.

Pop bangingness: 8
Best bit: that first, luxurious ‘you’ve got me mystified’, just 12 seconds in

Little Lies

Oh you want a fourth unbelievable song that will still be played, written about, and loved in fifty years’ time on the same album? Fine, fine, here you go. Yet again there’s a truly brilliant keyboard opening, yet again Mick and John lay down the groove, yet again Christine McVie delivers a stunningly simple, yet truly affecting melody in the chorus, yet again Lindsey adds those lovely percussive guitar touches, yet again the haunting reverby vocals whisper to you on either side. And that’s before you’ve even got to the chorus. Which, of course, is utterly brilliant. There are hooks all over the shop. In fact they could open up a shop selling hooks, purely stocking hooks from this song and they’d have a viable and sustainable business model. The video is on a farm for some reason. It could have featured them massacring a load of animals, just for fun, and it would still have been a hit, the song is that good.
Pop bangingness: 9
Best bit: that little growl sound before the chorus kicks in

Family Man

A strange, yet great song that, again, showcases Buckingham’s production flair with things flying at you on either side of the mix, along with a brilliantly over-the-top flamenco guitar bit between verses. There’s weird pitch-shifted vocal stuff, it’s all quite strange, and yet Mick and John’s groove-laying holds the entire thing together. In fact, so committed is John to the groove-laying industry, that he only plays 3 notes for the entire song, although he has a sudden rush of blood to the head at 3:07 when he lingers on the lowest*note of the three for a tiny bit longer than he does in the rest of the song. Phew John, don’t go too crazy mate.

Pop bangingness: 7
Best bit: the triangle tap on beat 4

Welcome to the Room... Sara

Proof that a drug-addled, part-time Stevie Nicks is still worth about ten of most other artists, this is another brilliant track. Gorgeous production that follows much of the themes of the rest of the record –*percussion all over the shop, Mick and John being really free and loose with their playing*laying down the groove, sparkly keyboard hooks*everywhere and that unbeatable trio of Nicks, McVie and Buckingham’s vocals in the chorus. Like most of Nicks’ greatest compositions, this just grooves along at a leisurely pace while Stevie weaves*her quasi-mystical lyrics in and out of the track. Fun fact: the track was inspired by her stay at the Betty Ford Center in October the previous year, where she attempted to overcome her cocaine addiction –*her pseudonym at the facility was ‘Sara Anderson’. OK, probably not that fun for Stevie but never mind.
Pop bangingness: 7
Best bit: the opening few bars. A glorious sparkling entrance to a magical song

Isn’t It Midnight

The undisputed hidden banger of an album that has so many very-much-unhidden bangers on it that somehow a track that most other bands would give their career for is buried down at track 10. Opening with a big booming tom hit, followed by –*yes, don’t worry guys –*Mick and John laying down the groove, with Lindsay whacking out some power-chords-with-intent. In comes Christine; her honeyed vocals carrying a little bit more bite than normal, then -*boom -*in comes yet another absolutely killer keyboard hook, another killer chorus and that shift in tone, with*Buckingham’s monotone 'face of a pretty girl’ laced with just the right amount of threat. After banging through another verse and chorus, rarely can a song have begged for a face-melting guitar solo more: Buckingham duly provides, taking a breather for another chorus (no one’s going to complain about that) before really letting rip on the outro. We’re fairly certain that somewhere out there exists the unfaded master tapes with Buckingham continuing for at least another 45 minutes. And count us in for*hearing that master tape someday.

Pop bangingness: 9
Best bit: that first chorus keyboard line. If the hairs on the back of your neck aren’t upstanding for that then you’re dead inside

When I See You Again

Continuing in the rich vein of sad-but-beautiful Buckingham/Nicks compositions (cf. Landslide), this is simply gorgeous. Buckingham keeps it simple on nylon-stringed guitar, and on production, with Christine adding just small flashes of keyboard, a few little percussive touches here and there and, of course, a few lovely backing vocals. Not much else to say about this, other than it’s just beautiful.
Pop bangingness: 7
Best bit: strangely, it’s probably the outro when Lindsey’s vocal –*exposed and fragile -*responds to Stevie’s lines earlier in the song: “If I see you again, will it be over? If I see you again, will it be the same?” Heartbreaking.

You And I, Part II

Let’s be honest here, this is a truly bizarre song. It’s basically like a kids’ TV show theme tune. And yet, somehow, it works. Another Buckingham/McVie co-write, this has all the hallmarks of Christine’s melodic genius, while Lindsey is given free reign on the stereoed-to-the-max production. Appropriately, for an album which was truly unafraid to be completely pop, this is as about as pop as you can get. It should have been a Christmas song, that’s our only criticism. A few sleigh bells and you’d have been there guys.

Pop bangingness: 6
Best bit: Lindsey’s delivery of ‘eyes shut tight’, like he’s trying to soothe a baby off to sleep with a lullaby

Thank you for posting this article Mike. I enjoyed it, hyperbole aside (Dylan bit) :)

Tango does, in a strange way tend to get looked over at times. Hopefully the new deluxe release will give it a fresh listen, regardless of not having a 5.1 mix (which still vexes me)
Thanks again.

I agree. I would never give any Fleetwood Mac song a 1 except maybe Hard Feelings from BTM. But Caroline is NOT a Fleetwood Mac song. It is 100% a Lindsey solo song that he included on Tango. And its not even a good Lindsey solo song. Its a horrible song......the beginning is terrible, the lyrics are trite and cheezy and just listening to it drives me INSANE  Its a song that Peter Green would probably tell Mick "see I told you it was a mistake to hire Lindsey...where is the bloody guitar?"
I waited over 5 years frantically for Tango to be released. I rushed to my local mall to buy the cassette and I was so excited. I played it on the way home and just was astounded at the new music. When Caroline came on...it was an instant buzz kill for me. Sorry. There are my favorites that others cant stand and that is what makes the world go round. We are each different which is a good thing.
I don't care for Tango as an album at all and I worshipped at the Fleetwood Mac alter in 1987. IMHO its not a group effort. According to Lindsey Mick was falling asleep in the studio and buying drugs in his driveway. Stevie was in rehab and would then show up late for only 2 weeks of little work. Christine put forward a great effort as she always does. Its HER songs that save the album for me. I am a Fleetwood Mac fan which is why I don't care for the album. It has very little Fleetwood Mac sound and some members contributed very little to the album. Lindsey embraced the 80s synth pop sound which really dates the album. But it was a moment in time and gave us a tour and transfer to a new era. Its just sad to me what COULD have been if Stevie and Mick were sober and ready to contribute and Lindsey staying to tour to promote the album.

This is probably my favorite album for Lindsey's vocals. I just love what he was doing with his voice. There is a plethora of various awesome wierdness and beautiful singing. Tango is also, IMO, FM's most positive, upbeat album. It just makes me happy and feel good when I listen to it. This, along with Mirage, were the first two FM CD's I bought after I became a fan in 2001.

Given how the "Seven Wonders" demo/early take is infact the album version but before all the production was added and the track was sped up, I'm wondering if any of the other bonus material is on similar lines. You can clearly hear how much work Lindsey and Richard did with the production on Tango. I imagine all the tracks started out in the same style as this 7W take - quite basic - and then Lindsey and Richard layered on top of the take and adjusted the speed etc.

I'm still disappointed about the lack of "Joan Of Arc" - I honestly think that's the 1 Tango outtake that was worthy of a place on the album. I'd take JOA over "When I See You Again" any day.

I'm interested to hear the Tango version of "Ooh My Love". It might have fit well on the album. Her released version is still more of a Fleetwood Mac-ish pop song than WTTR or WISYA.
And I'm wondering what "Where We Belong" is. I still wish they had included some "Little Lies" early versions-- I really like Christine's instrumental version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qh4CKzmsnVw) for example. I was also hoping we'd finally get a full version of her solo "Everywhere" demo-- a snippet of it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIn-pUYMBg4) once aired during a radio show where she was interviewed, and I always wanted to hear the full demo.

Can't wait for you and I part 1. It's a shame Lindsey didn't do the tour. I was watching some videos of Genesis's Invisible Touch tour and they're really really good. I couldn't help but think how awesome it would have been if Lindsey stuck around for the Tango tour and it was a world tour and we had some awesome videos like the Genesis ones, instead of filming the band rehearsing and then adding occasional stock audience shots in it like they did for the Tango tour videos.

Also liking this from the end of the article;
Later this year, Buckingham and McVie will debut a duets LP under the name Buckingham McVie. The pair have harmonized on numerous classic Fleetwood Mac songs, including Mirage's "Hold Me," Tusk's "Think About Me" and Rumours' "Don't Stop." This will be their first album as a duo.

Stevie Nicks: Recording ‘Tango’ in my ex-boyfriend’s bedroom was ‘extremely strange’

On Friday, March 10, Fleetwood Mac releases a 30th anniversary expanded edition of one of its most popular and influential albums, “Tango in the Night.” The lavishly packaged reissue offers a remastered version of the original album, a disc of B-sides and outtakes, plus another disc of 12-inch dance mixes of its hit singles like “Big Love” and “Little Lies” and a vinyl LP.

The 30th anniversary edition of Fleetwood Mac’s 1987 album, “Tango in the Night,” hits retail on March 10. The album includes four Top 40 singles, “Big Love,” “Seven Wonders,” “Little Lies” and “Everywhere” and remains the last studio album to feature the original “Rumours” lineup.

For Stevie Nicks, the group’s star attraction, recording her parts for the 1987 album proved difficult. After the completion of a ragged tour for her third solo album, 1985’s “Rock a Little,” she went into rehab at the Betty Ford Center for a cocaine addiction. After her release, she was misguidedly placed on a Klonopin regimen. Few in her inner circle thought rehab would stick unless she was dosed on anxiety medication. They were wrong.

Her first test: joining her Fleetwood Mac band mates for the 1986 tracking sessions for “Tango in the Night.” The band hadn’t recorded since the release of “Mirage” in 1982.

Nicks’ ex-boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham, the group’s guitarist, was co-producing the band’s efforts, again, but this time the tension was poisonous, even by Fleetwood Mac’s standards.

“When I started recording for ‘Tango,’ they were recording at Lindsey’s house up on Mulholland somewhere. He lived there with his girlfriend Cheri and this record was being recorded at his house and I didn’t find that to be a great situation for me. Especially coming out of rehab,” Nicks said in an interview last year. “And then I was on Klonopin and not quite understanding why I was feeling so weird and this doctor kept saying, ‘This is what you need.’ It’s the typical scenario of a groupie doctor. Discuss rock and roll with you, so in order to do that he would keep upping your dose so you’d come in once a week.”

Nicks sets the scenario: “I can remember going up there and not being happy to even be there and we were doing vocals in their master bedroom and that was extremely strange. In all fairness, it was like the only empty room and they had a beautiful master bedroom all set up like a vocal booth but I found it very uncomfortable, personally. I guess I didn’t go very often and when I did go I would get like, ‘Give me a shot of brandy and let me sing on four or five songs off the top of my head.’”

At her urging, Nicks said, Buckingham would cue up one of his songs or Christine McVie’s. Stevie would blend in like she always had. Except it wasn’t like she always had.

“I’d leave and he’d take all my vocals off,” Nicks said. “And I’m not blaming him for that because I’m sure they totally sucked. Vocals done when you’re crazy and drinking a cup of brandy probably aren’t usually going to be great and Lindsey is very precise when recording. … I wasn’t into it.”

For all of its problems in creation, “Tango in the Night” was a hit with consumers worldwide. In the U.S. the album spent 44 weeks in the Billboard Top 40 and spawned five chart singles, the biggest being McVie’s infectious “Little Lies.” The album was ultimately a hit with Nicks, as well. She feels the songs Buckingham contributed to the album — “Big Love,” “Caroline,” the title track, “Family Man” and his cowrite with McVie, “Isn’t it Midnight” — represent his best set of songs on any Fleetwood Mac album.

“Tango” has grown in stature since its release. The band has oft-been cited as an inspiration by alternative pop, rock and country acts like the Dixie Chicks, Little Big Town, Smashing Pumpkins, R.E.M., Hole, Haim, Sheryl Crow, Mumford and Sons, Ladies of the Canyon, Best Coast and Camper Van Beethoven.

“Tango in the Night” songs have been covered by a growing number of next generation and vintage acts. Vampire Weekend and Moustache each recorded McVie’s “Everywhere,” as did R&B star Chaka Khan. Singer-actress Hillary Duff, Ari Hest and Anna Ternheim all cut “Little Lies.” One Direction might as well be covering a “Tango” or “Mirage” track, given how close the British boy band channeled ’80s Fleetwood Mac on the 2016 cut, “What a Feeling.” Ditto Little Big Town on “Night On Our Side,” a track from the country group’s new album, “The Breaker.”

Since McVie’s return to the band in 2014, the “Tango in the Night” material has once again taken its place in the band’s concert setlist with her “Little Lies” and “Everywhere” among the highlights. Nicks’ “Seven Wonders” even returned on the 2014-15 On With the Show Tour’s first leg for the first time in 27 years, thanks to its featured spot during her acting debut on FX’s “American Horror Story: Coven” in 2014.

The “Tango” reissue’s remastering reinvigorates the music in a way the original 1987 CD release never could. There’s a new sense of muscle to the Mick Fleetwood-John McVie rhythm section on the title track. There’s air in the mix, allowing for the intricate harmonies and instrumentation — both organic and synthesized — to reveal its subtle layers. Disc three of the deluxe package offers 14 tracks of 12-inch remixes by that decade’s prominent DJs and remixers Arthur Baker and Jellybean. Fleetwood Mac, like seemingly everyone else in the Me Decade, found its footing in the dance clubs.

Some of the unearthed B-sides and outtakes, like McVie’s exotic and percussive “Ricky” and Buckingham’s hook-filled “Down Endless Street” and reflective “Special Kind of Love” are superior to a handful of songs that made the original 12-track running order.

“Tango” remains the last studio album to feature Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours” lineup. Alas, Nicks’ discomfort in the studio shows in her performances. Her best song here, “Seven Wonders,” was actually written by Texan composer Sandy Stewart. Nicks contributed one line. “I was so used to saying ‘All the way down to Emmiline’ so we used that. I asked Sandy, a really good friend of mine, and she said fine. It totally created a character. It was a song I loved. … And on that show [“AHS”] I got to make a full-on music video,” said Nicks.

“Welcome to the Room…Sara” is Nicks’ oddest song, with vocals that veer off-key, but as the reissue reveals, it’s among her most personal.

With lyrics cribbed from Nicks’ Bella Donna outtake, “Blue Lamp,” the song is redeemed musically mostly by Fleetwood’s inventive, island-flavored drum pattern. The music, Nicks said, was inspired by the 1986 David + David hit, “Welcome to the Boomtown.”

‘“Welcome to the Room … Sara’ was written about Betty Ford [Center.] I went in there as Sara Anderson – the one and only time I was married, to my friend Robin’s husband Kim Anderson,” said Nicks. “I was inspired by the fact when you go into Betty Ford it is like, ‘Welcome to the room whoever you are,’ because it is one big room and you spend 30 days in there. Quite an experience you go through from day one to day 30. … It is a little more weird when you are famous. People are a little harder on you. I will never do cocaine again. That was my mantra. I will never be ‘Welcome to the Room Again Sara’ here.”

Ironically, the Nicks songs that didn’t make the album’s final cut, the ones that wind up on the second disc of “Tango” B-sides and outtakes, are her most vital of the period. A driving Tom Petty-like rock version of “Ooh My Love,” later re-recorded in a more ethereal fashion for Nicks’ 1989 solo album, “The Other Side of the Mirror,” is a find. We almost had her bewitching, yet still raw, “Joan of Arc” demo, a song Nicks wrote inspired by primatologist Jane Goodall, but she pulled it off the disc last year. “I still want to record it,” she explained. “The song has its really good moments but it’s not good enough to go out as that version.”

Said “Tango” special edition producer Bill Inglot of the outtakes collection: “When I put that stuff together I wanted to create a disc that would be playable. If you can get away with it you try to create a record. I don’t want to put out bonus material or outtakes if people play it once. That’s not the goal to create something.”

The date has been postponed to the end of the month but probably who wrote the piece didn't know it and hasn't updated the number.
I'm really surprised by Joan of Arc being about Jane Goodall and almost ending up in 24K Gold.

Ugh I really wish they would've included 'Joan of Arc' on this.

She says she still wants to record it, but more than likely that won't happen. And if it does, I can't see the results being better than the demos.

Then I guess it's a good thing that there are pristine copies of the original versions floating around out there. "Gone with the wind like the stars and the dust..."
