Stevie Nicks Wants a New Fleetwood Mac Tour, Not a New Fleetwood Mac Album

Danny ClinchStevie Nicks is currently out on her 24 Karat Gold tour, promoting her recent solo album. But as far as recording a new album with Fleetwood Mac, Stevie believes the band shouldn't waste their time.

Before Fleetwood Mac launched their most recent tour, they worked on some new tracks without Stevie. While Mick Fleetwood suggested the tracks might be released with just Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie singing, Stevie doesn't buy it. "You can never say never, but I don’t think that will happen," she tells ABC Radio.

That doesn't mean Stevie's ready to join her bandmates in the studio, though.

"The only reason that I don’t really wanna do a record is because I think that, in a year and a half, we’ll probably go out and do another Fleetwood Mac tour, since Christine has come back," she explains. Christine McVie rejoined Fleetwood Mac in 2014 after a 16-year absence.

Stevie thinks touring is the better plan, simply because of Fleetwood Mac's dynamics.

"Do we want to go and close ourselves up in a studio for a year, [and] make a record that’s really good but that probably won’t sell, because records don’t really sell that much?" she asks. "And then we'll have been stuffed together for a year in one room, and...when you come out of that room, we may not want to go on a tour!"

The logical solution, Stevie says, is to skip making a new record, and simply hit the road.

"I think that we should choose the tour over the record," she tells ABC Radio. "Because touring is much more fun than making a record when you don’t have any idea how that record’s gonna come out."

Stevie has time to figure out her next move: her tour doesn't wrap until December 18.

There's a kind of symmetry here. Stevie didn't want to make an album in her solo career "because records don't really sell that much," and now she doesn't want to make one with Fleetwood Mac. Stevie has said this many times, including this solo tour outting. But more critically, in the case with Fleetwood Mac, she clearly doesn't believe they can make an album within a years time. If you read a tiny bit into it, "when you come out of that room [after spending at least a year tweaking things as they inevitably do]" we will be ready to kill each other? For most bands a year is too long. The studio time is extremely brief. Fleetwood Mac is notoriously slow.

Stevie can't contribute much to the making of an album. Stevie is a singer/songwriter. But the largest part of making an album falls on the musicians, engineers, producers, etc. But still, most bands get an album out much quicker. None of this should be a surprise to any of us. We have known of the dynamics between a certain two-some in the band for decades. What might be best is for Fleetwood Mac to proceed without her, accomplish what they can. We have all heard Lindsey and Christine have already gotten together and made great strides. Having just two singer/songwriters on a Fleetwood Mac album gives them much more room.

Stevie thinks touring is the better plan, simply because of Fleetwood Mac's dynamics.

Stevie is willing to tour with Fleetwood Mac. They didn't allow Christine to be on the album without touring, despite knowing her fears. Will Fleetwood Mac allow Stevie to tour without being on the album? Who knows. How bad do they want Stevie to tour with them? Touring is where the real money is made. There's a handful of people on The Ledge that would be happy for the experience of Fleetwood Mac without Stevie. I use the term "handful" compared to the thousands that fill an arena. I don't think they will have to go to smaller venues. If the public doesn't know Stevie isn't in the band, they will still go because it's "Fleetwood Mac." When you buy your tickets, it's because you see an ad somewhere and learn the band is on tour. Advertisers won't say, "and by the way, Stevie Nicks won't be with them." They could do quite well. The band didn't collapse without Lindsey or Christine during their 'sabbaticals'. But for argument sake, lets say they find they can't sell out the big arenas. (I think they can.) There's a lot to be said for touring in an intimate venue with great musicians, which Christine, Lindsey, John and Mick are.

Why spend more time being miserable for any of them? This is not a difficult decision for me. Obviously it is for Fleetwood Mac. Does it all come down to money? I think they will all be okay.

There's still no reason she can't pull a TITN and pop in for a couple of weeks to drop off some demos and record a few harmonies.

I don't even care if her heart's in it anymore. For the sake of the fans (if nothing else), they should churn out one final studio album now that all 5 are in the picture to bookend what's obviously the end of the line.

I know! I avoid it like the plague on the FM side. At least we know her reasoning now. It looks like it still boils down to not wanting to be the studio for any length of time with the band, which we kinda knew all along.

My guess is that Stevie probably thinks that the band is getting old and there isn't much more time left for them to tour such big world tours, so she prefers to spend these last years on the road.

Well, she's always preferred the road to the studio. So that part is nothing new. I think the death of her mom is what truly set this mindset shift into motion. They died in their early 80s, so I'm sure she's looking at her own mortality and at the things she hasn't done yet. Life truly is short.

I congratulate Stevie on a successful tour and extending it for 20 more dates. The new interview really frustrates me because of her hypocrisy. Does she not claim to be an artist anymore? She does not care about her passion for writing anymore? She sure signed on the dotted line a year ago for the HUGE Mac tour next year though. Her hypocrisy is hard to believe. Her last 2 solo albums were not commercially successful. But did she not want the world to hear her songs? How dare she use this hypocrisy about a future Mac album. This version of the Mac has not equally worked on a studio album since 1981-1982 for Mirage. Tango she was hardly there. How magical a Mac album worked together from all members would be. Then take it on the road to promote. Instead she wants to do a huge tour only for big bucks to sing Dreams, Landslide and Rhiannon for the ten millionth time? I still find it hard to believe she would be so vile to join the band for a tour but not the album. That would show she does not care for her craft anymore and only singing for big bucks. I actually would respect her more if she agreed to do the album but not agreed to the tour (yet). What about an attitude wanting to part of the Mac's final album.....to give back to a group that gave her so much and launched her into stardom. Be part of that final chapter. Just imagine if Waddy told Stevie a few years ago that he had no interest in working on 24K Gold because it was not going to sell well but "call me if you tour."

To those complaining her recent stuff hasn't sold well but it charted top 10. Mac with no Stevie may not even chart, so good luck with that! Stop raining on our Stevie fan parade! Luv y'all!

The 2015 Rolling Stone article is really enlightening on this point... She talks a lot about her mom and wanting freedom from her commitments.

My perspective:

I don't think people appreciate just how difficult it must be for her to be around Lindsey. IMHO that's the reason she doesn't want to go into the studio and it has nothing to do with the music business and everything to do with having to choose between herself or Lindsey yet again. Not only are there the every day fights and jabs and musical differences between them, but there's also the fact that as she gets older, despite the fact that she and Lindsey are so irrevocably connected, he's married to someone else and has children with someone else, and she is alone, and it's not like they can still write love songs to each other. She says it herself in Thrown Down -- "like a barricade," time has forced them apart.

It sounds like it's painful for her to try to work with Lindsey in the studio, to be around him so intimately for that amount of time when they can't be happy together. Part of me wonders if she's lost hope after album after album of love songs to this guy and now she's just moved on for good and doesn't want to go back to that same old routine of purgatory when she could be doing other, more exciting things.

I think that in the studio the problem is just that she doesn't really have the patience anymore for his over the top perfectionism. And I love Lindsey but he does take too much time with his production ways and I can imagine getting really annoyed. And there's the fact that I think she's also scared he's gonna make her stuff in ways she doesn't like (Say You Will). If he wasn't producing I really don't think there would be any major problem beyond the every day fights and jabs that you mentioned which I doubt are really that big of a deal anymore (unless they're really sick of each other) because that's just their 'thing' and they're probably used to it by now.

However what you said reminded me of something that she herself said in an interview and I remember it stood out to me because I thought it was such an interesting thing to say:

You can get to a state of mind where you can be happy, but it will always be difficult. You can find a good thing and you can be sad that you can’t be together.’ They always knew how to wind each other up, she says. Still do. ‘I just don’t think we will ever be friends,’ she concludes.

I had a job like this once. It was at a production company. There was a very relaxed atmosphere with public events and dinners and stuff. We all got along okay and had weekly fights and dealt with strong personalities. But outside of the job we weren't friends. It was one thing for that to be eight hours a day with weekends off but I can't imagine it involving the kind of hours it takes to make an album. And Stevie has said that they won't allow her to come in and work on her stuff or their stuff, they expect her to be on hand for most of the process in case they want to grab her at a moment's notice to do a background vocal here or there. It's one thing to be in your 20's, sitting around writing and hanging out with all the time in the world. It's another thing to be in your late 60's thinking that you're spending a big chunk of what little time you have left on this planet sitting around for hours, days or weeks waiting for Lindsey to ask you to sing an oooh or aahhh, writing lyrics for dozens of songs that he'll pick three of. Doesn't sound like a whole lot of fun to me.

Exactly. I think in the past she had more patience and willing for the process but now that she's getting older, it's changed which is somewhat understandable. I really believe the process is the big thing. If it didn't take so long and if Lindsey wasn't such a mini Brian Wilson as a producer I really think she'd do it. And I agree with what some people have pointed out how her mom dying had a big effect on her.

tothegypsy

My hope is that she eventually comes around to the idea of at least having limited involvement. They don't need her around for the entire process. I'm also confused about why she's concerned about record sales again...didn't she say that with In Your Dreams she finally reached the conclusion that creating art was more important?

I'd really love for them to do another record together...but given that Stevie is playing the same venues that Fleetwood Mac usually plays, I think she holds the cards.

ok this pisses me off.....she doesn't want to be part of any new FM recording sessions......but then doesn't want them to release whatever material they do without her either?? F. that.

I mean she and her lawyers can make a stink about them calling it FM ...so let them call it something else. You can't be the boss of everyone else in the band and hold them hostage to your preferences. If she doesn't want to record with them, fine. Clearly LB and Chris have recorded stuff. Who the eff is she to say that stuff can't get released?? Lindsey can release whatever the hell he wants as a solo album, and if it features collaborations with Chris, that's none of Stevie's mother flipping business. Sounds like Mick is the weak link in all of this, hoping that if he gives in to her she'll eventually come around. Doesn't seem likely from what she's saying, unless that's all public posturing and who knows what all is really going on in private.... (most likely there's a lot of palace intrigue going on as always). (edited to add, I think Chris is a weak link in this also. She seems to have mellowed over time, and clearly bugging out for 15 years loses you a lot of power in the group. She's said things in interviews since she's been back along the lines of not wanting to upset the other band members... just like when she was going to help Ken with his book and then backed out coz she didn't want to take a stand against LB's wishes. So she may be staying out of the fray as well. )

She doesn't get to call the shots on what the other two songwriters in the band can do with their own material. She is not however above using her infamous "I'll slam it in the media so hard" thing.....she used it against Lindsay Lohan and she's threatened it within FM "how's it gonna look when I tell the press how much I don't like this record" etc.... I've loved her forever but this **** really is pushing me away a lot lately.... if she doesn't want to do a FM record, fine, don't. I get it. But don't take the attitude that they can only do what you approve of even when you're not there. Bullsh&t.:mad::mad:

looking at SN's timeline in that new interview, she's putting the start of the FM 5 tour in mid 2018. that gives them all plenty of time in 2017 to release any album they have, and FM 4 to tour separately from Stevie as much as they want.

exciting times!

People here are reading a LOT into a few words. And the name-calling and anger are completely over-the-top and unnecessary.

Is it disappointing that there may never be another FM album with the five of them working together? Yeah, a bit. On the other hand, it is quite likely that the magic of old would not be captured on recording anyway. I very much doubt that anything they produce at this late date would have the sparkle, romance or intrigue of those first three albums. Even Mirage, as much as I sometimes like to hear it, doesn't quite match the white album, Rumours and Tusk. They were never really a BAND after the Mirage tour was over, maybe for a moment or two during The Dance year, but since then it really seems like they have been going through the motions.

As much as I tried to like the Say You Will album, it never really stuck with me. Sometimes I think about putting it on but then I never do. I have to finally admit that there are a handful of songs there that I find vaguely interesting but not enough to pull out the CD package and play any of them. I don't think it's a bad piece of work, but I don't find it as compelling as the earlier work, so it stays in the cabinet.

Finally, if you think someone is vile or selfish, why would you want their input on new work anyway?

I think everyone has been respectful. The frustration is completely understandable. We are on the edge of losing of what some thought would NEVER EVER happen...... a new studio album with these 5 members.
To those that want another rolling oldies tour.... you will ALWAYS get that with the Mac. I wish those wanting a traveling oldies show to show the other side a little more respect. I think there is more name calling on that side if you ask me ;)

I think they were talking about the ones who called Stevie bitch, however I have to say that I don't think it's true that we will always get oldies tours with the Mac because actually it's very likely that the next tour they do it's their last or second to last, they are getting pretty old. Perhaps Stevie thinks the same?

The term "selfish bitch" was used, so no, not everyone.

At the same time though, part of what we love about FM that we don't often get in Stevie's solo work, for instance, is the perfectionism, and the tightness of sound that Lindsey brings to the table.

I think the band is best when they're all there together, even if Stevie feels like she's just chiming in for oohs and aahs. Look at Tango in the Night, where her most notable vocal is "tell me lies" on Little Lies.

Forget whether it sells or not! You have plenty of money to spare! It won't kill you to have one unsuccessful record! JUST DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!

I disagree. Her vocal on Seven Wonders is one of her best.

The fact is it's time for the drama to end. She is the drama. She doesn't want to record with them anymore then it's time to leave the band.

Also, the last time they recorded an album was Tango and they out shown her. I'm sure she is afraid that if Christine and Lindsey get back together it will happen again.

If the new record flops with or without her .Its not the end of the world. They got enough cash to cover the losses and if it make cash. That will be great for them. The deal is a feelings problem with her and them altogether. If she dont like what they recorded already .I dont know.Or maybe she already gave them her 3 to 5 demos and they dont like them.We really dont know whats going on with them or some of us do and cant let the cat out of the bag and get killed be them for doing so..I'm not going to loose any sleep over this album topic because its not worth it and more worry about their health and my health which I will loose sleep over that then an album.

I honestly think that's part of it, that they may outshine her and added to the fact she may end up with only 3 or so songs as per usual and doesn't think it's worth the time, effort and stress of going into the studio. Sure, some of the songs on In Your Dreams are good but quite a few of them are older tunes. I think Stevie just needs to bite the bullet and just give the band some of the older demos that she revisited during the 24KG process. I mean, it's not like she hasn't before. Hell, even just on their last album she gave them Running Through The Garden, Goodbye Baby, Smile At You and Not Make Believe. Just give them some of those types and you're golden no matter what Christine and Lindsey bring to the table. Most of her newer tracks don't match the quality of her 70's-80's songwriting anyway.

I love Stevie, I love her art, her poetry, everything she has been and has continued to be over the years as far as celebrity goes. But the same old song and dance number between her and the Mac and her reluctance needs to end. Yes, you're getting older but that should be the reason you do a final Mac album, not why you turn it away. Does she honestly want to be remembered as the defining reason the band never did anything with any artistic merit before calling it a day and instead became just a regular, run-of-the-mill oldies act? Every night on stage she gives speech after speech about songwriting and how its her entire life but now she just wants to hang it up and sing the hits? I mean, what in the world is she thinking? Nobody is exactly asking her to be locked away in a studio for months on end with Lindsey. These days you can e-mail a track, record your vocals, send it back, receive feedback, fix if necessary, without ever seeing each others faces. Why is this so difficult to accomplish? Send your tracks, let them add their flair, sign off or don't, fix if necessary, be done with it. Boom, you're on the final Mac album without the verbal nonsense.

Cannot believe that I have paid $500 AUS for a ticket to see this selfish bitch perform. More than that, really, because I'm travelling to California from my home in Sydney to see her.

If she's intent on killing off any hope of one last Mac album, Stevie could at least record another solo album. Better still, do that and also give her blessing to Lindsey and Christine (plus Mick and John) to release a final Fleetwood Mac album without her.

Are you referring to the above post? Oh, that's just Lindsey posting. ;)

I think she's just over recording with FM. Every time they record an album, you always hear about what a pain in the ass it is. It seems they never actually enjoy the studio time together.

Bands hardly ever enjoy studio time together. Bands just breed conflict, that's kinda how they work. The Beatles had tons of issues, Lennon/McCartney, then Harrison feeling shafted, and then even moreso towards the end when Yoko and Linda were involved. Same with the Stones, Jagger and Richards are always conflicting, also the Eagles but (from everything I've read) Don and Glenn were basically tyrants which is how they got most of their work done.

That's just how it is in bands, I remember reading something Tom Petty said where he was saying like "As in a lot of bands, they get upset with each other sometimes because they know they're joined at the hip". But usually they go forth anyways because they're in a band and its their job. It's not fair to the others if one person is 'over' it.

exactly. it's starting to sound like Stevie is just totally over being in a band.

The Petty quote was Tom talking about Stevie and Lindsey. You know, when they were on that BAND tour and Stevie and her team arranged for her to do a cover story in Rolling Stone SOLO.

I think that was to promote her album since she couldn't tour it and do many television appearances to do it since she had to give priority to Fleetwood Mac.

If They record a new album great, and If they don't record a new album great as well, they can keep touring as long as they can play there hits along with songs they don't perform live they have such a huge catolog of songs to perform in concert. Either way is fine with me:angel::] but from the sounds of it she doesn't want to do another album with them.
